Audiobook woes aside, I am on a long fantasy kick right now, so if you have any secondary world fantasy recs (especially queer!) please send them my way! I just finished The Hands of the Emperor and other stuff I’ve enjoyed includes A Taste of Gold and Iron, A Strange and Stubborn Endurance, Captive Prince, A Song of Ice and Fire, and of course, the Wheel of Time series and LotR, both of which I’m currently reading and rereading

I can't be only one, right...?
Tumblr media
I wanted to finish the game and then write this post but I gave up. I put in 100 plus hours and just could not go on once I got into act three. Maybe no one will hear my pitiful cry from the void, but I must scream for the sake of my sanity.
I was completely and utterly disappointed by Baldur's Gate 3.
It had huge maps like an open world game yet I had no desire to explore the settings despite their beauty. It had hours of dialogue as an RPG would and yet I found myself skipping characters' responses. The game mechanic structure was inspired by DnD, a story-telling game dictated by some rules, lucky rolls and the extent of players' imagination, yet I was strong-armed into fighting impossibly stacked battles. A story-telling game dependent on the players’ attachment to their and their teammates' characters and yet this game lacked any kind of narrative consistency or depth of feeling.
Larian wanted to make an open world RPG, based off of DND mechanics and somehow did the worst version of all three. The studio touts that Baldur’s Gate 3 has 17,000 possible endings and 2 million words, but to what end? What did this game have to say about what happens when people rise to the challenge and become heroes despite their circumstances or fall into the dark and become the monsters they were supposed to fight? What did it suggest might happen when fate deals you a bad hand but in doing so also helps you find true friends or love with the other? Ultimately, nothing.
BG3 is so large that it ends up being incoherent. No writing or game structure decisions were made to keep the narrative tight and on theme. It urges players to choose a moral alignment, but most decisions, good or bad, seem to end up having little effect in the end. To play the game at all you have to resort to save scumming and that in turn deflates the possible impact of so many plot points of the narrative overall.
Forcing players to save scum in order to progress through the game is terrible design in general. Statistically speaking the bosses make impossible critical hits again and again. I was playing in the game’s “casual mode” and found myself struggling to get through confrontations with bosses that were at a lower level than my own. If you are reading and thinking oh well you are probably not using tactics or spells well, etc., let’s do a little experiment…
Take your d20 (https://rolladie.net/roll-a-d20-die if you don’t have one in person). In the third act of BG3 I had an AC of 13 as a sorcerer with 100 plus HP. Roll your d20 ten times or more. How many times out of ten would your character have gotten to hit mine successfully? Unless an enemy is extremely lucky it should be unlikely that an enemy could hit my character every turn they get. And even if they do they would have to roll for damage which is only a single d6, d8, d10 or d12 plus a modifier at lower levels depending on your class. Again an enemy would have to have an extremely lucky roll to hit me every turn AND deal significant damage. During an in person DnD session that is just a bad night for my character. In a video game on casual mode that is significantly suspicious.
So what you might say. You've made and enjoyed the fanart, memes and etc. You got your $61 worth of playtime. So many other people were fine with the game, what is your problem?
I love video games. They blend so many artforms and tell stories in ways never done before. It is a medium unique to our current century and when historians look back they will view video games as an insight to our culture.
It frustrates me to no end that Baldur’s Gate 3 is considered the next gold standard. Too many games have done open world and RPGs in a fantasy setting far better for Larian (Swen Vincke) to have made the design and writing choices they did with BG3. There are so many podcasts and shows that have written better stories through the DnD format. I am embarrassed for the medium as an artist and frustrated as a player. Players and the industry deserve better than to have artists, actors, engineers etc. burn themselves out creating maximalist behemoths like this game. A game that is beautiful but basically unplayable, narratively, nihilistic and incoherent.

Hi! I’m not sure if you’re comfortable answering questions about your fics here so please feel free to ignore this if you’re not.
I’m a russian queer who left a comment under chapter 3 of The Season and I’m super qurious why you decided to make Астарион :), Cazador and Halsin russian. In Good Men and Monsters you mention that Astarion has been called upyr, does he have Eastern European background in that universe as well?
I’m completely enamoured with and fascinated by your works and wait for new updates religiously. Thank you so much for sharing them with us, you’re a солнышко! 🖤
Hello friend!! I am slow to answer but happy to! I can't promise I'll be very eloquent or be able to provide a satisfying answer but I'll do my best.
First of all, I haven't specified Astarion's background in Good Men and I likely won't, so if you want to read him as Eastern European please do! I can absolutely see how it fits. In the context of that discussion it's the concept of Vampirism and the folklore surrounding it that is focused on Eastern Europe rather than he himself. I am absolutely not going to touch some of Stoker's vampiric lore because he was a xenophobic Victorian man (the boxes of dirt... goddamn, Stoker, what the fuck - the grave dirt of course is relevant in Good Men but it's 'the soil the vampire was buried in' not 'fifty boxes of soil from his homeland'). I could write a whole essay on the symbolism of the outsider as a threat and the crossover of the ostracized sections of Victorian society in Dracula (non-english, lower class, homosexual, the list goes on and fucking on) but this is already a long reply so I'll spare you and look at Season.
There are a couple of reasons that it fits, for me, and a lot of it is to do with the Russian history of competitive ice skating. Writing a modern AU Astarion who wasn't a vampire meant I knew I needed to find another way to have that aspect of his character where his life hasn't been his own, where it's been shaped by other people for their own purposes, and even as an adult and being 'free' to make his own choices, he's living with the legacy of who they made him, and working to be more than that. Competitive sport definitely has that aspect already, unfortunately, and ice skating even more so.
I also never wanted him to be the only Russian, because then of course you're risking tokenizing him. Cazador made sense for obvious reasons, but Halsin too. I considered him because he's the other high elf companion, but also because in game he's the one with a history of war. Transferring him to a modern day context was harder than a lot of the other characters, but I wanted him to have that similar ground with Astarion that he has in game, even if they never address it. Unintentionally, it means that in Season he and Astarion have very different experiences of their culture and identity, especially in context of the diaspora, which is something I really enjoy exploring.
Of course that then raises the question of the current geopolitical state of Russia and the wider Slavic regions. Having real world issues as a basis for plot is always somewhat fraught, but it's also something very close to my heart and that I want to write about. I also didn't want to make them all British to avoid any of that difficulty, that would be both unrealistic and uninteresting.
I think the ultimate reason is that fiction, even fanfiction, is our way of processing and reflecting on and exploring our world. It's less obvious in fantasy settings, but it's still very much there. The ultimate reason I choose to do anything is because it's interesting - and usually, in a real world context, that means it's fraught and complicated. I want to write about things that matter, to me and to anyone who might read it, and I want to do it in a way that means anyone reading from a different context might feel seen.
The reason I started writing in the first place, however many years ago, is that I didn't see any asexual rep in fiction and I knew that if I needed it, someone else needed it too. I do the same now. I have queer Russian friends who feel like the world has moved on from what's going on in Russia at the moment, or that all Russian people are being treated like they MUST agree with what the Russian government are doing. The nuance of the situation and their identity is erased by oversimplification. I suppose part of writing this is just me wanting to do anything I can to combat that. It's not much, but I hope it's something, to know that you're seen and still being thought about, and people still care.
Writing characters who have dealt with miscarriage, drug abuse, xenophobia, chronic pain, emotional neglect and all those kinds of things is because I have feelings about these subjects, I want to discuss them, I want to explore what it means to live through something like that and how it affects you as a person. Fiction is a space to do that, and to invite people into those conversations that we wouldn't have otherwise. Art has always been a starting point, and it's always been at the forefront of social and political change. I don't write fanfic thinking it's going to change the world, obviously, but I do write it with the intention of treating real life situations with the respect and consideration they deserve, rather than just using them for drama or brushing over them because it's a difficult thing to talk about.
I know that Season is a love story. That's the ultimate goal, and I presume that's why people are still reading. But it's also, to me, a story about what it means to be queer in our world today. What that looks like, how far we've come and how far we still have left to go. I want to give people a story that is real, in that sense. That takes in all the fucking awful shit that can come with being queer and out and open, and still have hope and a happy ending. It's not easy, and I don't ever want to pretend that it is. But fiction also gives us a place where we can imagine what a happy ending might look like, in a world that doesn't provide them as often as we'd like.
So. Sorry for the essay as a response, but. I suppose I made Astarion Russian because it made sense for his character, but also because I want to write with hope, and not manufacturing false hope by turning away from the world as it is. I want to write all the awful, difficult, horrible things, and believe that happiness and hope are possible anyway, despite, and including them. We don't live in an ideal world. Sometimes I want to cave to despair and think that things will never be better. I write because I don't want to believe that's true.

Okay like if you agree, but….
here are 3 trends that I wish the fantasy genre would take a break from for a little while.
*Quick disclosure, this isn’t meant to feel overly negative, I mostly want to hear other people’s opinions on these trends and others!*
Hungry Games-esque “a competition with deadly stakes” plot lines. On the one hand, I get it, because like the rest of the world, I was totally enthralled by this premise when it was first introduced in the 2000 Japanese film Battle Royale and later, the Hunger Games. However, at this point the idea of the main character entering into a deadly competition feels a little tired and predictable, and unlike Battle Royale and The Hunger Games, the many of the latest iterations lack the searing social commentary which made the premise so compelling. Notable Examples: Serpent and the Wings of Night, Lightlark, The Jasad Heir
Motherfucking EPIGRAPHS. You know, that line or paragraph of text which proceeds every chapter. In the fantasy genre, often it is an except from a historical or religious text from the world in which the book is set. And here’s the thing—it’s not that I hate epigraphs, or that I don’t understand their purpose. They can be an elegant way to add context to the story without burdening the main narrative with too much exposition, and they can also help the created world to feel more “lived in”. Having said that, I feel like they are starting to get way overused, and for me, they’ve gone from feeling like a cool way for the author to provide context and add meta commentary to their story to serving as a slightly less clunky vehicle of info-dumping. Like…am I supposed to be remembering the characters of this lore which I only ever hear about through these epigraphs, because I can assure you, I am not. In other instances, they can feel like an authors lack of faith in the reader, as if they are afraid we might miss the point if they don’t include an unsubtle cue as to where we ought to focus our attention at the start of every chapter. I respect the role epigraphs have played in fantasy classics like Dune and Wheel of Time, but I currently feel the number of novels employing them has become fatiguing, and I hope the trend of including them decreases, at least in the short-term. Notable examples: Fourth Wing (Empyrean Series, Swordcatcher, Furyborn (Empirium series)
A [Blank] of [Blank] and [Blank] Not much to say here other than…when are romantasy authors going to let this go?? 😮‍💨😮‍💨 While you could argue the true genesis of this title naming convention could be GRRM’s A Song of Ice of Fire, I think we can all agree that—for better or worse—it was the popularity of ACOTAR that sent this title style into the stratosphere, and at this point, it has become ubiquitous to the point of literal disorientation. To me there is nothing inherently wrong with this title style (though I would also argue there is nothing particularly gripping about it, at least not enough to warrant a trend of this size) but it basically renders all of these books—which are already of a similar vibe and style—virtually indistinguishable. As a reader on the hunt for new books to scratch that romantasy itch, it’s nearly impossible to tell the dozens of titles bearing this title apart, which means I have no sense which which ones I’ve read, which I haven’t, which caught my interest, which I started and didn’t care for, etc. I have idea how much of this is a consequence of publishers trying to capitalize on a known entity in order to make the most money and how much is just the fact that naming a book is really fucking hard, but good lord, what is it gonna take to stop this madness? Notable examples: quite literally too many to name
What do yall think? Do you agree, disagree? What are some fantasy trends you’d like to see go away/make a comeback

CHAPTER 2: SCHEDULE.
note; titles were never my forte (ヽ´ω`) ...
beginning
ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤ . . .
12 years later. . .
I lift myself off my bed and slip on my slippers. It's currently 6 AM and school starts at 8. I stumble over to my door and turn the knob then open it slowly. I yawn.
useless, it's a word that lingers in my head a lot. I step inside my bathroom and close the door.
It's simply letters put together but yet I find myself feeling completely motionless when I hear it. I spit out the minty white paste and wash my mouth, then set my toothbrush in its holder. My eyes narrow upward when I wipe my mouth with the back of my hand.
there's a plant right behind me, it's a Satoru green bamboo plant. It stares at me through the mirror, begging for my assistance. The leaves now turning a yellowish decaying color that screamed in agony. I can feel its pain through this glass I look over my shoulder and my eyes narrow to its pot.
pots are similar to homes for plants, there are different types of pots.. big ones, small ones, really detailed ones, and bland ones. My eyes move up.
my brain starts to go places again, bad places.
my eyes shut close when I remember then open wide. I return my gaze to the mirror then open the bathroom door and turn off the light, all in one swift move. The plant stays put, weeping in the dark after I left.
I wonder why that plant was still there, I mean after all, it was my mother's favorite.
I hurry back to my room to change into my uniform, rummaging through piles of clothes I've yet to put away. Once I find my long sleeve I slip it on then my skirt and lastly my stockings. They are plain black nothing too fancy I do attend a regular high school.
I go to my body mirror and observe my hair, big and curly. There are some days I wish I looked like those girls with luscious blond beauty pin-straight hair or pretty dazzling wavy hair, but other days I learn to deal with it. My curls weren't my biggest problem anyway.
I twirl a strain of hair and watch it coil back, my feet move elsewhere now as I pick up my shoulder bag. You know those bags with several different pockets and kinda just look cool, like you're in some old adventure film.
I like a good vintage look but these unifroms aren't doing it for me.
I make my way out of my bedroom and into the kitchen, time to make breakfast.
because I'm the only woman in the house I'm expected to start breakfast for my father and brother. I found it awfully offensive at first but when you get yelled out several times you just learn to deal with it.
I could poison my father anytime I wanted, but I haven't.
I watch the egg sizzle in the small pot when I crack the egg open, it bubbles from the heat provided below. I sprinkle a little seasoning for flavor.
6:50 AM.
breakfast has been served and ready for the two idiots in our house. I leave their plates on the small table, it's hot now but not for too long since they enjoy their slumber.
they can eat it cold for all I care.
I grab my food and consume it in the kitchen, the atmosphere in there is so quiet and peaceful. The sun barely has come out to say hello so it's rather dim but I don't mind, I've grown accustomed to the night. Me and the moon are friends. Best friends.
7:05 AM.
I make a list of what is needed in the home, mostly a grocery list. I'll have to stop by the store to pick up ingredients for today and possibly for the week. My pencil moves swiftly as I write with precision on the Kuromi-themed sheet of paper. I sneak an earbud in my ear and turn up the volume. I begin to bop my head lightly and smile.
7:45 AM.
I live somewhat close to my school so I take my leave later than most students, at least I'm grateful for that. My steps are slow and long as I trudge my way across the sideway and onto another. Music blasts in my ears, making the neurons in my brain send direct orders to make my fingers tap against the bag hung over my shoulder. I trap myself in the fantasy world I've made in my mind and within minutes I arrive at school.
I stand outside on the school campus, looking up at the huge structure. Students pass me by as they laugh and giggle at one another and eventually find their way inside. I remain focused on the building, I can feel my heart clench in my chest at a single thought.
there was nothing big about this school.. it was merely just a regular, normal high school. It is where I belonged, yes, somewhere... regular.

Solarpunk Fiction and Conflict Pt. 2
Tumblr media
Let's continue to talk about conflict in Solarpunk fiction and stories we could easily tell there. You can find part 1 here.
The second category of conflict in Solarpunk fiction I see, is conflict with the environment. Something that can happen in a very literal way or the more... traditional way.
Let's talk about the traditional ways: Environmental Catastrophies and Survival Stories.
Human vs environment has always been a staple conflict in fiction and even though the Solarpunk movement is an environmental movement... Well, us being on the side of the environment does not mean that the environment is gonna be on our side, if you get my drift.
For one you can all Roland Emerich and tell a story of an Environmental Catastrophy. You can very well have a Solarpunk world, in which the current issues from climate change have not been fixed. So either you could have scientist just deal with trying to fix those issues... or you can tell stories about the climate catastrophies going on and about the people who try to survive it - or those trying to save the survivors. Again: You can go all Roland Emerich, but just have it in front of the backdrop of a Solarpunk world.
The other classic one can be a classical Survival Story. Look, even within a Solarpunk world people might get stuck in situations, where they gotta survive. Maybe they went out there into nature on their own volition because they are scientists and get lost. Maybe they live out there and a storm cuts them off. Or maybe it is a classical case of a ship or plane wrecking out in the wild. In fact, this could be a super interesting story to be told within a Solarpunk setting, given that a person, who grew up on Solarpunk values, might have different view points - and also different technological skills. (Also, look, SciFi survival stories are fun af!)
One less traditional kind of story to be told in a Solarpunk setting and that I would love to see, is what I am going to name Species Survivalism.
Let me let out my inner geek. Because maybe this is too science for even most Science Fiction nerds. But currently there are scientists all over the world battling to keep certain species important for the environment alive - or in fact reestablish a population. And while this would be really a geeky kind of story... It definitely could make for an interesting story. Trying to fix the world in a small way, after a Solarpunk Utopia has been established.
And then there is the last way. The Studio Ghibli way, if you want to.
See, often times Solarpunk is thought only as a SciFi genre, but technically speaking there is no law saying it cannot have fantasy elements. Especially given that one of the largest influence on the genre have been Studio Ghibli movies like Laputa and Princess Mononoke.
So lastly, for this type of conflict, I present you: Nature's Willing Revenge: Yes, sure, we have established a Solarpunk society, but we kinda messed up nature before we got there. Now the nature spirits/gods have reawakened and they are pissed. Will the protagonist have to fight them or try to establish some sort of peace with them?

21+ currently obsessed with high, dark fantasy settings. Really inspired by things like Souls-games right now (Dark Souls, Elden Ring) and fantasy like DnD, Baldur’s Gate, The Elder Scrolls/Skyrim, Lord of the Rings/Tolkeinn, Game of Thrones/George Martin, etc - you get the vibes. Worlds full of different creatures, monsters, magic, dungeons, gods, ghosts, curses, different kinds of kingdoms, etc. I’m quite leaning to something more in the line of Elden Ring/dark fantasy in particular, with a lot feuds, fighting, wars, factions, magic, etc. I’d love to do an ocxoc rp in such a setting. I’m open to any pairing + trans/nb characters. Bring me your rogues, your Chosen One, your mages, your elves, monsters, demigods, corrupt characters or good knights, healers, old warriors, legends, disgraced characters, fallen from grace characters, etc. The more unique the better! Open to non-human/not entirely human characters as well. Give me 8 feet tall people, people with 4 arms, eldritch abominations, animalistic creatures, etc!! Go wild! I’m definitely open to multi muse for this and fleshing out the world, but to give us a base, we could start with two setting out on an adventure together or stumbling upon one another and travelling together, something like that? Bring some ideas my way and we can brainstorm together!
I have very few limits and am open to dark, heavy topics, violence, gore, etc. I won’t rp underage content or rp out SA scenes though - mentions in backstory are fine, I just don’t want to write it. Would love some dark stuff at some points but we can figure that out together and all limits will be respected! I write on discord, advanced literate/novella style (1000-2000 words typically per reply) and of course not every reply has to be super long and I’m open to doing shorter style side threads if we need a break, but I tend to lose interest in really short replies. Open to smut - most of my characters are switches and I prefer to see what feels natural for our characters and don’t rush smut. Open to fading to black and also doing purely platonic dynamics. Open to all pairings - most of my characters tend to be cis amab or nb amab (I do also play trasnmascs, transfems and cis afabs though lol). I love queer dynamics so bring them all my way!! Unconventional dynamics too are awesome!! I love complex, nuanced characters and nuanced, realistic relationships too!! Open to realistic, drawn, animated, and description faceclaims and will probably use a mix myself. This is getting way too long now so I’ll round it out, but like if interested and I’ll reach out. Please be prepared to share some thoughts/preferences and (where I might lose some of you) a writing sample (I can offer one too.) Ty for reading this much<3 🗡️

Dimension hopping 1
Steve ran from the window, trying to find something to fight with. Fight with...? Was he really about to take on a dragon? He heard another roar outside and yep, it seemed that way. He found a sword, which was heavier than they looked in movies. Steve gave it a few practices swings and then went for his door.
The moment he opened it though, there was his mother. Dressed in clothes more fitting the current setting and not Hawkins at all.
“Thank the stars, you’re safe.”
“What’s going on? What the hell is happening?”, Steve asked, urgency rising in his voice.
“Get dressed”, she said. “That horrid beast was driven back for now but it’ll be back. Your father is going to choose a champion to do the deed.”
Steve felt like he only understood every other word she said. He had been in Hawkins, sleeping in his living room. This had to be some weird dream then. But it all felt too lucid to be that. He understood ‘get dressed’ though. Having some guy in the room helping him into the clothing was a little...new. But part of Steve was glad for it, otherwise he’d have to figure out this stuff for himself.
Once he was decent, he was guided to the throne room where his full title was announced and he took a seat next to his father. His mother was already on the other side. Steve scanned the room, trying to find other familiar faces. Anyone who knew the kind of world-bending crap they normally went through. This was definitely out of the normal bounds of Upside Down stuff, but what else could it be?
Steve missed what was being said and only snapped his attention back when he saw Eddie standing there, in literal shining armor. His name came out of Steve’s mouth in a whisper, but his dad must have heard it because he shot a glare his way. Even in a dream, those eyes kept him glued to his seat instead of running to his boyfriend like he wanted.
“Sir knight, you have done this kingdom a great service by running the dragon from our walls today”, the king praised.
“I cannot horde the glory”, Eddie said. “I am but one man. And it took many to do the deed.”
“But the deed is not yet done. Sir Edward, I beseech you to find this creature where he lay and slay it dead. Will you accept?”
“I accept, Your Majesty.”
Steve wanted to shout at them both. They were crazy for thinking Eddie could take on a dragon. He’d seen the size of that thing! Then Eddie did this odd, barely noticeable quirk with his fingers. He tapped his index finger on top of his middle twice.
“Meet me by training grounds.”
Steve didn’t know how he knew the meaning, but he did. When the court was dismissed, Steve was able to find his way there like he’d been roaming these castle walls his whole life. He was about to walk onto the empty pitch when a hand grabbed his arm and pulled him into a darkish corner. Then a mouth was on top of his.
“Eddie”, he tried to say between the kisses. “Eddie, is that really you?”
Eddie pulled back and looked into his eyes. “It’s me. Why are you asking? I know it’s kinda dark but-”
“Eddie what the hell is going on? Where are we?”
Concerned, Eddie looked him over. “Wait? Steve? Like actual Steve?”
“Is there any other?”
“Well shit. I thought this was-”
“A dream?”
“I have this one quite often”, Eddie admitted. “But if it isn’t a dream...then we’re actually here... Is this uh, normal for you guys.”
“No”, Steve said. “Never anything like this.”
Eddie took a step back, then began to pace in the small space around them. “You know what it is like? It’s like one of the movies we just watched.”
“So instead of falling into the Upside Down, we fell into a movie?”
“Makes about as much sense as anything else. Otherwise we’re both having a shared dream and isn’t that equally weird?”
Steve nodded. It was. “So what do we do?”
“You’re asking me?”, Eddie asked with a hand to his armored chest.
“You’re the fantasy nerd. You know how this all goes.”
“Well I know how I’d make it go in my world.” If this was one of his campaigns that is. “Slaying the dragon has gotta be the climax. And typically these kinds of things do have a forbidden romance going”, he waggled his eyebrows towards Steve.
“What does that mean?”
“It means, my liege, that you shouldn’t be seen getting intimate with someone of my status, lest we invite the wrath of your father.”
“Okay. So we’re going on what do you call them? A quest?”, Steve asked.
Eddie kissed him. “I’ve been waiting for you to say those words for so long.”
------------------------
The day Eddie was sent on his quest was met with fanfare. He was the storied knight of prophecy after all. The king and queen saw him off but the prince had fallen ill that morning and couldn’t be present.
Little did anyone know, after convincing his mother of being under the weather, Prince Stephen snuck out and joined Sir Edward on his own horse, ready to set off for the dragon’s keep.
“The journey won’t be an easy one, Your Highness. But oh the songs they’ll sing of us!”, Eddie exclaimed.
“You’re having fun with this, aren’t you?”
“I have no idea what you mean”, Eddie said as he took out a lute and began to strum it.

lyrics that only a tortured poet could write
(pt 2)
i am someone who until recent events you shared your secrets with // and your location, you forgot to turn it off // and so i watch as you walk
old habits die screaming
i move through the world with a heart broken // my longing state unspoken // and i may never open up the way i did for you
you said i needed a brave man // then proceeded to play him // until i believed it too
was it hazing for a cruel fraternity? // i pledged and i still mean it
now i wanna sell my house and set fire to all my clothes // and hire a priest to come and exorcise my demons // even if i die screaming // and i hope you hear it
i hear the whispers in your eyes // i'll make you wanna think twice // you'll find that you were never not mine
pick your poison, babe, i'm poison either way
even if it's handcuffed, i'm leavin' here with you
wise men once said // "wild winds are death to the candle"
cross your thoughtless heart // only liquor anoints you // she's the albatross // she is here to destroy you
wise men once said // "one bad seed kills the garden" // "one less temptress, one less dagger to sharpen" // locked me up in towers // but i'd visit in your dreams
and when that sky rains fire on you // and you're persona non grata // i'll tell you how i've been there too // and that none of it matters
wise men once read fake news // and they believed it
spread my wings like a parachute // i'm the albatross // i swept in at the rescue
if you wanna break my cold, cold heart // just say, "i loved you the way that you were"
i changed into goddesses, villains and fools // changed plans and lovers and outfits and rules
down that passage in time back to the moment // i crashed into you, like so many wrecks do // too impaired by my youth to know what to do
could it be enough to just float in your orbit? // can we watch our phantoms like watching wild horses?
we hereby conduct this post-mortem
and so a touch that was my birthright became foreign
come one, come all // it's happening again
we learn the right steps to different dances
lost the game of chance, what are the chances?
guess who we ran into at the shops? walking in circles like she was lost // didn't you hear? they called it all off // one gasp and then: how did it end?
say it once again with feeling // how the death rattle breathing // silenced as the soul was leaving // the deflation of our dreaming // leaving me bereft and reeling // my beloved ghost and me // sitting in a tree // D-Y-I-N-G
i can't pretend like i understand ... i still don't know // how did it end?
i feel so high school every time i look at you // i wanna find you in a crowd just to hide from you
i'll drink what you think and I'm high // from smokin' your jokes all damn night // the brink of a wrinkle in time // bittersweet sixteen suddenly
are you gonna marry, kiss or kill me? // it's just a game, but really // i'm bettin' on all three for us two
i hate it here so i will go to secret gardens in my mind // people need a key to get to, the only one is mine // i read about it in a book when i was a precocious child // no mid-sized city hopes and small-town fears // i'm there most of the year 'cause i hate it here
i hate it here so i will go to lunar valleys in my mind // when they found a better planet, only the gentle survived // i dreamed about it in the dark, the night I felt like i might die
i'm lonely, but i'm good // i'm bitter, but i swear i'm fine // i'll save all my romanticism for my inner life and i'll get lost on purpose // this place made me feel worthless // lucid dreams like electricity, the current flies through me // and in my fantasies, i rise above it
everyone knows that my mother is a saintly woman // but she used to say she wished that you were dead
i wrote a thousand songs that you find uncool // i built a legacy that you can't undo // but when i count the scars, there's a moment of truth // that there wouldn't be this if there hadn't been you
and maybe you've reframed it // and in your mind, you never beat my spirit black and blue // i don't think you've changed much
a feather taken by the wind blowing // i'm afflicted by the not knowing
i look in people's windows // transfixed by rose golden glows
does it feel alright to not know me? // i'm addicted to the "if only"
i guess a lesser woman would've lost hope // a greater woman wouldn't beg // but i looked to the sky and said please
cards on thе table // mine play out like fools in a fable // oh, it was sinking in // slow is the quicksand // poison blood from the wound of the pricked hand
and i sound like an infant // feeling like the very last drops of an ink pen // a greater woman stays cool // but i howl like a wolf at the moon // and i look unstable // gathered with a coven 'round a sorceress' table // a greater woman has faith // but even statues crumble if they're made to wait // i'm so afraid i sealed my fate // no sign of soulmates // i'm just a paperweight in shades of greige // spending my last coin so someone will tell me it'll be okay
when the first stone's thrown, there's screamin' // in the streets, there's a raging riot // when it's "burn the bitch," they're shrieking // when the truth comes out, it's quiet
i was in my tower weaving nightmares // twisting all my smiles into snarls // they say, "what doesn't kill you makes you aware" // what happens if it becomes who you are?
they knew, they knew, they knew the whole time // that i was onto somethin' // the family, the pure greed, the Christian chorus line // they all said nothin' // blood's thick, but nothin' like a payroll // bet they never spared a prayer for my soul // you can mark my words that i said it first // in a mourning warning, no one heard
said you were gonna grow up // then you were gonna come find me // words from the mouths of babes // promises oceans deep// but never to keep
are you still a mind reader? // a natural scene stealer? // i've heard great things, Peter // but life was always easier on you than it was on me
we both did the best we could do // underneath the same moon // in different galaxies
and i won't confess that i waited, but i let the lamp burn
love's never lost when perspective is earned
forgive me, Peter, please know that i tried // to hold onto the days when you were mine // but the woman who sits by the window has turned out the light
and i can confirm she made // a curious child, ever reviled // by everyone except her own father // with a quite bewitching face // splendidly selfish, charmingly helpless // excellent fun 'til you get to know her
but as she was leaving it felt like breathing ... as she was leaving it felt like freedom
all her fuckin' lives flashed before her eyes // it feels like the time she fell through the ice then came out alive
and at first blush, this is fate // when it's all roses, portrait pose // Central Park Lake in tiny rowboats // what a charming Saturday // that's when she sees the littlest leaks down in the floorboards // and she just knows she must bolt
buried down deep // and out of your reach // the secret we all vowed // to keep it from you in sweetness
you got the dragonflies above your bed // you have a favorite spot on the swing set // you have no room in your dreams for regrets // (you have no idea) // the time will arrive for the cruel and the mean // you'll learn to bounce back just like your trampoline // but now we'll curtail your curiosity
i'm not a donor but i'd give you my heart if you needed it
and the years passed like scenes of a show // the professor said to write what you know // lookin' backwards might be the only way to move forward // then the actors were hitting their marks // and the slow dance was alight with the sparks // and the tears fell // in synchronicity with the score // and at last // she knew what the agony had been for
now and then i reread the manuscript // but the story isn't mine anymore

I would love to know about your DnD characters!! (My first one sort of became a chaos gremlin unintentionally because of who I am as a person lol.)
SDFSDLFH oh BOY I get to talk about my tabletop characters. (I have so many but I'm gonna talk about the ones that fall on the Chaotic Gremlin Spectrum)
Shireen:
Ok so my very first DnD character ever is a teenager named Shireen. She's a gnome grave cleric of Segojan Earthcaller. She had a spiritual weapon which was a mallet shaped like a duck made out of solid diamond that she thwacked enemies with (and often to the chagrin of our barbarian, got the final blows). Shireen's weapon of choice is a hand crossbow which is attached to her arm prosthetic. She is naive to the ways of the world and often tries to talk her way out of situations where it is absolutely not possible to talk her way out of it. She eventually became like a daughter to her grumpy barbarian and blood hunter companions.
Evuné:
I partook in an All Evil campaign where I played as Evuné (Or Evil Anya as we called her). She is a changeling profane soul blood hunter. Weapon of choice being longswords and her stupidly high deception skill. Her whole deal is she is a sleeper agent for a hostile nation and is stealing the identity of a different PC of mine (Anya) in order to get by. She is arrogant, annoying, and lucky when it counts. One of the most powerful NPCs in the setting has it out for her because she openly mocked the king in the middle of a royal procession and she has evaded him through sheer luck alone (many fortuitous Nat 20s)... oh and also she's wanted for many murders, but like it's not her fault they had stuff she wanted.
I later also played as her in BG3 as a Minthara-romancing Dark Urge.
Nima:
She's the character I'm playing in the currently active campaign I'm in. She's another profane soul blood hunter, but not evil. Her weapon of choice is an ancestral bow passed down to her by her mother. She is a hobgoblin who accidentally made a pact with a Devil and is too proud to admit that her patron isn't THAT BAD. She got kidnapped by her patron's enemy, another Devil who is threatening to enslave the entire world, and Nima's father, a prolific adventurer and also deadbeat dad, traded himself for her, allowing her to go free. So now she's autistically making her way through the world to defeat this devil and I guess also rescue her dad eventually whenever she gets around to it.
Ellie:
She's not a DnD character, but rather a character from a different tabletop system called Quasar, which is Sci-Fi Fantasy themed. She is a hacker and roboticist who is, secretly and unbeknownst to her, an Android (She believes herself to be human and presents herself as such). Her weapon of choice is explosives. Lots of them. And turrets. She also can sabotage enemies by hacking into their equipment. She has no qualms over using her powers to doxx rich people and blackmail people who get in her way, but she will never cross any lines if it makes things more difficult for her friends. She is an essential part of her party because she owns the van spaceship and also she once installed a sense of taste onto her android party member so it could taste the blood of its enemies.

OC Questionnaire
Thank you so much for the tag, @willtheweaver!!! (here)
MY QUESTIONS WERE:
Is there anything that would make you lose trust in others?
Do you think anyone could love you?
If you could relive one day, which one would it be?
YOUR QUESTIONS ARE:
Where is your favorite place in the world?
What food do you hate the most?
Do you like watching sunsets or sunrises?
The characters answering will be Corah and Scarlet from Of Starlight and Beasts, Renn from my still-unnamed fairytale fantasy WIP, and Sam Delaways from Enchanted Illusions!
1. Is there anything that would make you lose trust in others?
Corah - Betrayal, abandonment and dishonesty are pretty far up on the list, along with unwarranted cruelty, people who like to make others feel uncomfortable, or those with a just generally jerkass attitude.
Scarlet - Finding out that person works for the King, or is too buddy-buddy with the constabulary in the city usually sets off all of my alarms all at once. I also cannot stand cowards, liars and people who cannot be trusted to hide a secret.
Renn - Hmm. I guess that being lied to or used by someone tends to be what breaks the deal, but I also lose trust in people who are too indecisive, or whom I know would choose the set laws and rules over the wellbeing of individuals.
Sam - Trust is important, alright, but it ain't more important than staying safe. I tend to give people a lot of chances before fully losing all trust in 'em. I think what would make me lose trust really fast is finding out someone is sadistic or cruel to innocent people, or discovering someone I trusted had intentionally hid something important from me.
2. Do you think anyone could love you?
Corah - ... I sure hope so? Haha. Asking the hard hitting questions, are we now? But on a serious note, I think that almost anyone who is good - or willing to become good through effort - deserves love. I strive to be a good person and help others whenever I can - I just hope this is enough...
Scarlet - Yes, absolutely! I am a delight to be around. I think. I have lots of friends, and my sister and I have a really close bond. The love for one's family is one of the most special ties in the world, and I wouldn't ask for anything more.
Renn - I think so, if they ever get to know me beyond what the rumors and scare stories of the villagers will have you believe. Most don't. I don't really care - but some days I just wish more people gave me a chance.
Sam - Yep. I have two little brothers who say that I'm their hero! While in my opinion that is very flattering on its own, I'm very thankful to have them both in my life, despite most things not going as planned. Don't know what I would do without 'em.
3. If you could relive one day, which one would it be?
Corah - The day I met Arammys. I know its two days before my whole life was thrown upside down, but that day was perfect. Not only was it the day I met my closest friend, and current boyfriend, but everything was so perfectly normal - almost like everything was going to go exactly as I expected. Turns out they didn't, but that's not the point.
Scarlet - The day I taught Nimwen how to shoot the bow and arrow, and I stole a cherry cake from a shop in town that lasted us two whole days. That was a pretty great day given our standards. I'd love to relive it.
Renn - Hmm. The days before my Dad went on the voyage that got him killed. Before I had to figure out how to survive alone away from our land and villagers with torches and pitchforks became the biggest threat to my way of life. We were happy, and I was just a little kid having the time of my life with a parent cared about me. That was great! Or used to be.
Sam - I dunno. Days are all pretty similar in Strystead - an endless grind of work, survival and learning to stay out of trouble. My happiest moments are the ones where I get to just spend free time with my little brothers without having to work myself to the bone in the factories. Those days are rare though, and will likely keep getting rarer - because the Mayor sure ain't about to pay working folk a proper salary, but that's a whole other issue.

Writeblr Interview Tag
Look at me, mom, I'm a writeblr.
I was tagged by @the-inkwell-variable thank you :D
I feel like I am (again? always?) running out of people to tag, and I don't wanna annoy anyone and this is pretty long, so open tag.
Short stories, novels, or poems?
Novels all the way.
What genre do you prefer reading?
Fantasy, murder mystery, romance—the latter only in certain circumstances like a very interesting character or setting. Without that, romance makes me run for the hills.
Are you a planner or a write as I go kind of person?
Yes.
What music do you listen to while writing?
Whatever my current playlist is, which could be a) instrumental soundtrack of something b) a playlist that might or might not be project related (it currently is) containing at least 50% power metal or c) pressing play in youtube for a fun adventure. I can listen to one and the same song for several weeks on repeat.
Favorite books/movies?
I don't really watch many movies. Can't even remember the last one, and there are none I return to with any kind of regularity. I guess The Outsider (2002) was pretty neat. I even made a music video with scenes from the movie and all that XD As for books, some are quite old like The Wind Witch by Susan Dexter, or the Death Gate Cycle by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman. Others are indies, like Once Stolen by D.N. Bryn or The Sorceress and the Incubus by Mallory Dunlin. My favorite murder mysteries are the Lindsay Chamberlain books by Beverly Connor, and Wolfsaga by Käthe Recheis is a (German) masterpiece.
Any current WIPs?
One active one, and one on hiatus. The active one is All of our Lives, currently at around 53k with hopes of finishing draft 1 at the end of the year. Suffering, recovery, revenge, happy end :D The other was supposed to strand Riordan in the wilderness, but it turns out, I can't divide my attention atm. Sorry, Riordan :/
If someone were to make a cartoon out of you what would your standard outfit be?
Knee-length summer dress over leggins and a long sleeved shirt, sandals with two differently colored socks, one matching the dress, the other the shirt, and glasses with a black frame. Also give me an ace ring, even if I'm not wearing it anymore atm.
Create a character description of yourself:
No lol
Do you like incorporating actual people you know into your writing?
Whole people, no. Freely taking names or small details from people I know? Absolutely.
Are you kill happy with your characters?
I kill all of the bad guys and none of the good guys.
Coffee or Tea while writing?
I don't really drink coffee, so.... 95% of the time it's tap water, though.
Slow or fast writer?
I guess in the grand scheme of things, it still counts as fast, even when I am unhappy with the speed.
Where/who/what do you draw inspiration from?
⭐ Everything ⭐
If you were in a fantasy world, what would you be?
Dead lol
Most fav book cliche:
I'm not really sure if that's a cliche or what, but unexpected kindness. Nothing has me sobbing like a character being kind and accepting when no one else (especially those much closer to them) was before. Aaaand we don't think too hard about why that is, let's move on ->
Least favorite cliche:
Oh! *opens draft again 2 seconds before posting and replaces what I had written before* The redeemed bad guy who gets killed off. Letting us get to know them, showing their tragic past and their love for kitties or whatever, and bam, a chapter later, dead, self-sacrifice for the noble hero. Fuck that.
Favorite scene to write?
Funnily enough, torture ranks pretty low, and recovery not much higher. There's always so much at stake and I take forever getting the words down and I keep forgetting injuries and wait which finger did I cut off? Most fun is just writing a happy little scene where the characters hang out and suddenly tell me things about themselves I didn't know yet, and uh, sometimes there's also happy little accidents.
Reason for writing?
If I don't do it, who else will?

Ask bomb
Are there any specific technologies or concepts from sci-fi books that you wish existed in the real world?
Do you consider yourself to be a picky eater?
You are given a choice to live in one of the fictional worlds where your games are set in. Which one would you choose and why?
If you were given a budget of 5000$ to upgrade your current house of tech setup, how would you spend it?
What's the most unusual item on your bedside table?
Have you read any of the IF works in chooseyourstory.com? While the forum is filled with unsavory characters, the quality of some of the works is better than most IFs found throughout the community as a whole
What's your favorite conspiracy theory, even if you don't believe it?
If you could have a conversation with your pet and they could understand you for just one minute, what would you say?
If you had a warning label, what would it say?
If aliens visited Earth and you were the first human they encountered, how would you explain our species?
What's the weirdest piece of advice you've ever received that turned out to be surprisingly useful?

If you could have any mythical creature as a pet, which one would you choose and what would you name it?
As a french what are your thoughts on croak shoes and dad hats?
What's your favorite French expression or saying that you think the rest of the world needs to adopt?
If you could turn any activity into an Olympic sport, what would you have a good chance of winning a gold medal in?
😱
omg Anon...
Alright let's see
Teleportation. I hate the getting to places part of travelling. But also... Would it even work? Paris 2119 kinda gave me the ick about it at the same time.
I don't think I am. I'll eat almost anything and try new stuff when I can.
Any of the slice-of-life/like-the-real-world setting. Space is cool but it's too dangerous. Fantasy worlds don't have vaccines and medicine. It's like time travel: go in the past and you'll die of whatever disease is there, or in the future and maybe kill everyone with your bacteria (or was it the other way around? either way...). I'd rather live in a "normal" setting.
Half into a bed and mattress - the one you can bend up to read better. The rest in books and comics. If you give me the 5k in three years, I'll spend it in a gaming computer.
More unused bookmarks than books (I just have books on my bedside table).
I checked out the top rated listing on the main page a while back. Not my thing.
The Dead Internet Theory: the internet died some while back and is just populated by bots only. So we don't interact with people directly but through bots. It's a bit cuckoo. Or Nessie.
I've been told plants and rocks don't count as pets...
Volume not adjustable.
Don't bother, we're unsalvageable.
Touch grass. (go outside, take a walk, breath some fresh air)
Didn't buy, but I keep getting gifted croissant-related things: socks, kitchen towel... and more recently: the plushie. It is amazing. I love it.
The head of Mímir. I think we'd be drinking buddies. Especially if he is like in God of War.
Eh... Let people wear whatever they want.
« Quand le vin est tiré, il faut le boire. » - When the wine is drawn, you must drink it. Or finish your shit.
I am so average at shit, even then I wouldn't win any gold medal. And that's fine :)

Please be prepared to share some thoughts/preferences and (where I might lose some of you) a writing sample (I can offer one too.) Ty for reading this much<3 🗡️
give a like and anon will get back to you
