Happy Bday!! I know it's late sorry but I also had a prompt for you! Season 1 or Season 2 Dean meets Season 15 Sam & is basically kind of..taken back by how different the sammy he knows and this one are. Maybe Dean learning about Sam's first death, the cage, the trials, idk just some angsty as he comes face to face with the shell of a man his kid brother once was. (Dont get me wrong I love sam but if you were to put season 1 sam and season 15 sam side by side, the difference would be..oof)

it’s been a literal month since my birthday asdfgfds i’m so sorry BUT GUESS WHAT, I LITERALLY HAD A DREAM ABOUT THIS PROMPT LAST NIGHT SO I’M FINALLY WRITING IT

Sam doesn’t even bother looking up from his phone when he hears footsteps in the library. It’s probably Dean, coming back because he forgot his wallet and only remembered it halfway to the grocery store. “Check your desk!” Sam calls out, not moving from where he’s sitting at the kitchen table.

“Huh?” comes Dean’s voice.

“For your wallet!” Sam replies. “You forgot it, didn’t you?”

The footsteps sound out again, closer this time, and a moment later Dean enters the kitchen. “What?”

Sam looks up, and freezes at the same time Dean does.

This isn’t his brother. At least, not the one that just left to go buy food and toilet paper around twenty minutes ago. This is Dean as he was, fifteen years ago, young and soft around the edges, and–

–pointing a gun at him.

“What the hell?” he demands, narrowing his eyes at Sam.

Sam puts his phone down and raises his hands. “I could ask you the same thing,” he says. “What happened to you?”

“What happened to you?” Dean retorts. “Why do you have so much hair?”

Sam blinks. “Um.”

“Cristo,” says Dean loudly, taking a few steps closer to Sam. His gun remains aimed at him, and Sam keeps his hands up, trying to look as non-threatening as possible. It shouldn’t be hard, he thinks wryly, considering it’s 10 AM, and he’s nursing his first cup of coffee, sporting awful bedhead, and dressed in boxers and an ancient gray shirt.

“I’m not a demon,” Sam tells him. “Or a shapeshifter, or a ghoul,” he adds, slowly reaching for the silver fork his Dean left on the table before leaving. “See?” he says, picking it up.

That works – Dean lowers his gun, but doesn’t lose the suspicion. “What the hell is going on?” he asks. “Sam – how old are you? Where are we?”

“How old are you?” Sam counters. “What’s the last thing you remember?”

“Uh...” Dean frowns. “I’m twenty-six, and uh, last thing I remember is that witch we were hunting. Um, Wisconsin. Come on, man, you were there!”

Sam racks his brains and comes up with nothing, which isn’t surprising. If this Dean’s 26, it means the Sam he’s with is 22, and there is an ocean of memories and centuries between then and now. Sam can barely remember anything before the Cage as it is.

“Right, yeah,” he says in the end, keeping his eyes on Dean as he warily takes the seat across from him. “Just, uh, remind me what happened?”

“Dude, come on!” Dean says, and then stops abruptly. “You weren’t there,” he says a second later. “Whatever happened, you’re not my Sam.”

That stings in a way Sam can’t really explain. Logically he knows Dean means the Sam he was with, but to hear him say it like that makes something inside Sam hurt in a way he cannot put into words.

Maybe it shows on his face; Dean’s expression softens, and he says, “I meant... the one that’s with me. From... wherever I came from.”

“Yeah, I know,” Sam says, picking up his coffee mug just so he has something to do with his hands.

There’s an awkward pause, and then Dean clears his throat, and says, “Anyway, the witch did some weird mojo thing, and now I can’t tell what this is. Some kinda alternate dimension? Time travel? I dunno, man. I just hope my Sam figures it out soon.”

“Yeah,” repeats Sam.

“What year is it anyway?” Dean asks. “How old are you, dude?”

“It’s 2020,” Sam tells him, grateful for something to say. “I’m thirty-seven.”

Dean blinks, clearly surprised. “What, really?”

Sam nods. “Yeah. Why?”

“Just surprised we lived this long,” Dean answers honestly.

Sam gives him a half-smile at that. “Yeah, we did. Just barely, but we did.” He doesn’t say it, but the feeling of surprise never really leaves him, either. Every birthday they have, every fourth of July, and Sam never ceases to wonder at how they’ve managed to survive this long.

“So where am I, then?” Dean asks, looking around as if expecting his older self to materialize out of nowhere. “And what is this place?”

“It’s our home,” Sam tells him, and can’t help but smile again at the stunned look on Dean’s face. “Me and future you, we live here. And he’s gone out for groceries,” he adds, and then wonders if he should drop Dean a come home now!!! text.

He decides not to, after a few moments’ contemplation -- it would only panic him, and the last thing Sam needs is for Dean to race home thinking Sam’s in danger.

“Right,” says the Dean in front of him after a few moments of silence. “Our home. That we live in. Together.”

Sam nods, watching him process all of this.

“So that means -- do we find Dad?”

The naked hope on his face is a little unbearable, and Sam turns away to stare into his coffee instead. “Yeah,” he says shortly.

“And?” Dean asks, grinning now, appearing excited. “Do we kill the YED?”

“Yes,” Sam answers.

Some of Dean’s excitement fades in the face of Sam’s short answers. “Dude,” he says. “What is it?”

“What’s what?” Sam asks. His lower back suddenly feels itchy in a way that he knows is psychological, not physical, and he resists the urge to scratch.

“Somehow I get the feeling you’re not telling me everything,” Dean says. “I mean, come on! How long does it take? What do we do after? Where’s Dad? Are we still hunting? Did you ever go back to college?”

Sam blinks at the onslaught of questions, looking up at Dean again. “Uh,” he says, and then sighs. “Look, if your time travel theory is right, and I tell you what happens--”

He hasn’t forgotten what it was like to lose John a second time. He knows he’s not going to lose Dean, but to have their world changed again... he doesn’t think he’s strong enough to handle that. He’s fought too long and too hard for the kind of peace he has with Dean now, and having to live without him might just break him.

“Don’t give me that crap,” interrupts Dean, and Sam falls quiet at the unexpected anger in his tone. “Come on, man. I swear not to do anything that’ll fuck up the timeline, or whatever.”

“Easy for you to say,” Sam points out.

“Maybe I won’t even remember this!” Dean argues.

“You really wanna take that risk?” Sam asks. “My whole world could change, Dean. And I don’t know if it’d be for the better.”

“You can’t know that,” Dean begins, but stops at the bitter scoff Sam lets out.

“Yeah,” Sam says shortly, and tries not to think of his father. “Yeah, I can. Trust me.”

“Dude,” Dean says, but it’s softer this time. “What happened to you, man?”

“Dean,” Sam starts.

“Please,” says Dean, and fuck, how is Sam supposed to say no to that? “I swear I won’t do anything reckless,” he adds quickly, and then gives him a crooked grin. “As if my Sam would ever let me, anyway.”

Fuck it, thinks Sam. Just fuck it. It’s barely half past ten, he hasn’t slept well, he’s undercaffeinated, and his brother from fifteen years earlier is sitting across from him, looking at him like he’s begging, and Sam’s back hurts and he misses John suddenly, and he just can’t fight anymore.

“You have to swear,” he tells Dean, well-aware that he’s begging. “Please. You have to swear to me. ‘Cause if you don’t, you could change everything, and then I--” He stops, voice breaking. His eyes are embarrassingly wet.

“Sam.” Dean’s voice is so soft it’s almost a whisper. “Sammy, I swear. I swear on my life, Sam.”

Sam lets out a bitter laugh. He may not remember much, but he remembers Dean’s self-esteem issues crystal clear, and knows exactly how much Dean values his own life -- which is to say, barely. “No,” he says. “Swear on -- swear on Dad’s.” That’s a promise that Dean might take seriously.

“Okay, then,” Dean says. “I swear on Dad’s life. Yours, too,” he adds.

That reassures Sam. He takes a couple of deep breaths, gathering himself, and then says, “Okay. All right. What do you wanna know?”

“Where’s Dad?” Dean asks immediately.

Figures, thinks Sam wryly. Back then Dean had still worshiped the ground John walked on. “He’s dead,” he tells Dean candidly, wishing there was a better way to put it but knowing Dean wouldn’t appreciate sugarcoating.

Dean flinches, and then closes his eyes for a second. “How?” he asks a second later, and Sam’s not surprised to see his eyes wet.

“We got attacked by demons,” he tells Dean. “Um, Dad and I were mostly all right, but you were -- you weren’t. And Dad sold his soul to the YED so you’d live.”

“He what?” Dean almost yells, face losing color at an alarming rate.

Sam nods. “But you lived,” he says quickly. Maybe if he gets this out as fast as possible, it’ll hurt less, for both of them. “But Dad told you that YED was after me, and you’d either have to kill me or save me. And the YED had other special kids too, and he made us all fight to the death, and -- and I lost,” he finishes, and clenches his fingers around his mug so that he won’t touch his back. “I lost, and then you sold your soul for me. And then we killed the YED, and then -- you went to hell for me.” Sam pauses, takes a breath. It seems like ancient history now, considering how long he’s lived in between then and now, but it never stops hurting.

Dean closes his eyes again, and takes a deep breath. “But you said -- you said he’s out shopping--”

“You get out,” Sam interrupts. “But you accidentally break the first seal of the Apocalypse, and I end up breaking the last. I didn’t mean to.” He doesn’t mention the demon blood; that’s too painful to get into, and he’d rather avoid all of that entirely. “I released Lucifer, and then we had to figure out how to stop him.”

“Fuck,” sighs Dean. His eyes are still closed.

“And we did it,” Sam says, speaking so fast his words run into each other. “We did it, and I wasn’t even in hell that long, I guess? I mean, I thought it’d be forever, but it wasn’t--”

“You went to hell?” Dean interrupts, opening his eyes.

Typical Dean, thinks Sam with sudden fondness. More concerned for Sam than for himself. As always.

“Yeah,” Sam says. “But, um. I got out. Obviously,” he adds with a little laugh.

Dean does not appear amused at all. “How long was I there?” he asks.

“Four months, Earth time,” Sam tells him. “Forty years down there.”

There’s a pause as Dean considers this. Then he asks, “And you?”

“I’m not sure,” Sam admits after a few seconds. “I mean, it was eighteen months up here, but... I don’t remember. It felt like a really long time, but I can’t be sure.”

Dean narrows his eyes. “Going by the math... hundred and eighty years,” he says, voice expressionless.

“I’m not sure,” Sam repeats. “It felt... I don’t know. Forever. But I know it wasn’t.”

Dean exhales slowly. His hands on the table clench into fists, so tight he’s got to be hurting himself. For a few moments it looks like he’s going to shout, or curse, or maybe even cry, and Sam watches in apprehension as Dean struggles to compose himself.

Then he asks, still in that same flat voice, “And what happens then?”

“Do you really want to know?” Sam asks, looking away from Dean. His face is so blank it’s a little scary, but Sam knows he’s just trying to distance himself so that he doesn’t end up breaking down. It’s all got to be too much.

“Yes,” Dean says after a moment. “Probably gonna regret it, fuck... but yes.”

“Okay, well, I lose my soul for a while. You get it back for me though,” Sam adds before Dean can freak out. “And it’s rough for a while, but you get me through it, and then you... you end up in Purgatory. But you get out! And then we do these trials of hell, and if we do them all then we could close the gates of hell forever, and you were supposed to do them but I accidentally did the first one and then I had to do the rest too, and--” He stops. He’s not sure how to tell Dean about what went down in that church.

“And?” Dean prompts.

“I didn’t complete the last one,” Sam says, opting for the CliffNotes version of events. “I, um, I got kinda sick. Almost didn’t make it. You did something to save me that I didn’t like, and it wasn’t -- it was bad, and things were rough for a while, and then you, um, you got this ancient curse, and I broke that, but then we accidentally released a cosmic entity, and she wasn’t happy, and then -- well, we survived that, and some other crap,” he finishes lamely.

“That’s it?” Dean asks when Sam doesn’t continue.

“No,” Sam says, and sighs. He slumps forward against the table, resting his elbows on it and bowing his head. He feels tired, all of a sudden. “There was some other stuff too, but... well, we got through it.”

“And now?” asks Dean. “What’s happening now?”

This, Sam can answer without feeling like his heart’s breaking. “Oh. Nothing much. We go on hunts every now and then, but mostly we’ve just... settled down. Things are peaceful. They’re good.”

“And you and me? Are we good?”

“We’re good,” Sam reassures Dean. “Better than we’ve ever been, actually,” he adds with a smile.

Some of the tension bleeds out of Dean’s shoulders. “And -- everything that we go through... is it worth it?” he asks quietly.

Sam doesn’t have to think about it for longer than a millisecond. “Yes,” he says at once, looking up. “Yes. Every damn moment. If I had to live it all again, all of it, knowing that we end up here, I would. I wouldn’t change a damn thing.”

“Not even hell?” Dean asks, looking surprised.

“For you, maybe,” Sam says. “But that’s your choice. But everything I went through... I wouldn’t change it. Look,” he says, wondering how best to put it, to make Dean understand. “I know I shouldn’t have told you all of this. It’s risky. That’s why you’ve gotta understand, Dean, you can’t -- you can’t do anything, okay? No matter what. No matter how tempting it is. ‘Cause if things change for the worse--”

“Hey,” Dean says, again in that soft tone from earlier, and Sam goes quiet. His eyes are wet. So are Dean’s. “I swore, didn’t I?”

“I know,” Sam whispers, feeling choked. “I know you did. But you might feel differently once it comes down to it.”

Dean thinks about that for a second. Then he asks, “What if I don’t remember?”

“You don’t know that you won’t,” Sam points out.

“I don’t want to, anymore,” Dean says. He looks torn, and more than a little pained. “Sammy, God, I’m sorry, but -- hearing all of that? Fuck, Sam. How have you not gone mad? How am I sane? Just hearing it has me wanting to eat a bullet, man.” He looks at Sam, pleading, as if he wants Sam to tell him something that’ll change his mind.

This, Sam can do. “’Cause we’ve got each other,” he tells Dean, and the smile he gives him is genuine even though it’s small. “Yeah, there’s a lot of crap, but we weren’t alone. We got each other through it.”

Dean looks thoughtful for a second, and then looks at Sam. “Yeah, sounds like us,” he says, and though his eyes are wet, the smile on his face is very much real.

“Yeah,” Sam echoes, still smiling.

The moment passes when Dean’s expression changes abruptly. He blinks, and then winces. “Ah, fuck, I think I gotta go,” he says, and gets to his feet.

“What’s happening?” Sam asks, looking up at him, frowning.

“I think my Sam figured it out,” Dean tells him, grimacing. “Feels like -- God, my head hurts.”

“So -- what, how does it work?” Sam asks, scrambling to his feet too. Dean looks like he’s in pain, and Sam hovers by him, wondering what he can possibly do to help.

“Dunno,” Dean grits out. “I’ll tell you one thing, though, you don’t need to worry ‘bout a damn thing. I can barely remember half an hour ago, I don’t think I’ll remember this once I’m back.”

“You sure?” Sam asks. It sounds to good to be true, and with their lives, he can never be too sure.

Dean nods, and then lets out a long exhale. “Yeah, yeah, okay, I gotta go,” he manages to say. “Look,” he says, turning to Sam, and Sam notes with alarm that Dean’s beginning to look a little hazy around the edges. “I’m glad I met you, okay? Even though it sounds like a lot of shit had to happen for us to get to this point. I’m kinda losing the details already, but... it’s all worth it, right?”

He’s fading before Sam’s eyes.

“Yes,” Sam whispers. “Every moment.”

Dean smiles at him. “See you later, then, I guess,” he says, and when Sam blinks, he’s gone.

Sam stares at the spot he’d been in for a few moments, and then staggers back to the kitchen table. He collapses in his seat, head falling into his hands, and tries to process everything that’s just happened. For a wild moment he wonders if he’s hallucinated it all, but--

Fuck, he thinks heavily. If that Dean remembers, if he changes anything--

With shaky fingers, Sam unlocks his phone and texts his Dean. hey, where are you?

Dean normally answers within seconds, especially when it’s Sam. A minute passes with no reply, and Sam starts to feel panic creeping in, asphyxiating and insistent. dean? he tries again.

If things are going to change, then he’ll start to see it now. If that younger Dean makes just one choice differently, everything could go wrong. It had gone so awfully off the rails with John. Sam doesn’t even want to think about what could happen with a younger, far more chaotic version of Dean knowing the truth about everything.

God, is that why his Dean’s not texting back? Is he even alive?

Sam somehow manages to go to Calls and dial Dean. His fingers are shaking so hard now that he can barely hold his phone up, and he doesn’t understand why he’s panicking so much, why he can feel bile at the back of his throat, and Dean’s not picking up, why won’t he pick up--

God, if he’s not there, if he’s gone--

All Sam had to do was keep his mouth shut. Fuck, he should’ve known, should’ve predicted this. Promises were so easy to forget in the face of impossible choices. Should’ve seen this coming--

Off in the distance, the bunker door clangs shut.

For a moment Sam’s frozen, his brain barely able to process the sound of footsteps. Then he bolts up, all but racing to the door, heart so loud in his ears that he’s afraid it might literally burst--

--and there he is, his brother, his Dean, standing at the foot of the stairs holding two large brown bags. Sam comes to a halt a couple feet from him, not daring to blink for fear of him vanishing.

“Heya, Sammy,” Dean greets.

Sam doesn’t answer.

“Sam?” Dean says, now sounding concerned. He puts the bags down on the nearest table and takes a few steps closer to his brother. “Sammy? What’s wrong?”

Instead of answering, Sam closes the distance between them and throws his arms around Dean, hugging him as tight as he can. Dean lets out a choked off little sound, and then wraps his arms around Sam, one hand coming up automatically to cradle the back of Sam’s head. Sam leans into the embrace, burrowing his face into the side of Dean’s neck, closing his eyes and taking deep breaths to center himself.

“Sammy?” Dean tries again. “Man, I’m freaking out. Did something happen?”

“Everything’s fine,” Sam tells him, gripping the back of Dean’s jacket tightly. “Everything’s fine, Dean.”

“Good to know,” Dean says, still sounding confused as he pats Sam’s back. “You okay?”

Sam lets out a wet little laugh instead of replying. A second later, Dean untangles himself from Sam’s arms and takes his face in his hands, looking worried as all hell. “Sam, come on, man,” he says, almost pleading.

“I’m okay,” Sam reassures him. “I’m fine, really.” Before he can stop it, a tear falls from his eye, and he wipes blindly at it. “Dean--”

Dean’s face softens, in a similar way to his younger self from just a few minutes ago, and Sam’s heart almost stops at the sameness of it. “Nightmare?” his big brother asks, gently wiping a tear away.

“Something like that,” Sam whispers.

Dean gives him a small smile before pulling him in for another hug. “It’s all right,” he tells Sam, rubbing his back a little. “It’s okay, Sammy.”

“I know,” Sam answers, closing his eyes again and resting his chin on Dean’s shoulder. “I know, Dean. Just -- you weren’t answering your phone.”

“Died,” Dean tells him apologetically. “Sorry ‘bout that.”

“It’s all right,” Sam says.

There is a short silence, during which Sam composes himself and Dean holds him, patting his back. Then Dean says, “You’re wiping your snot on my jacket, aren’t you.” It’s not a question, more of a resigned statement.

Sam laughs. “Yes,” he answers shamelessly, before letting go of Dean so he can wipe at his eyes.

“Gross,” Dean complains. Then, voice softer, “You gonna be okay?”

Sam nods.

“Good,” Dean says, eyes crinkling as he grins at Sam. A second later, Sam finds one of the brown bags being shoved into his arms. “Then you won’t mind helping me put these away.”

“Dude,” Sam says, following Dean to the kitchen. “How much pie did you get?”

“Not enough,” Dean answers vaguely. “There’s never enough pie. And don’t you dare say a word about my cholesterol,” he adds warningly before Sam can speak.

They bicker about it as Sam helps Dean put the groceries away, but Sam’s mind is only half on the argument. He can’t help but smile at his brother when Dean’s not looking, can’t help but count all the ways he got lucky here, all the ways he’s been lucky just to have Dean. He’d meant it, what he’d told that younger version of Dean -- every moment he’s lived, all the bad and ugly and painful things along with the good... it’s all worth it, just to be here, now, in the home he shares with his brother.

I used to work in a toy store (a mom and pop local thing but very big and well known in the state) and hoo boy there are several interesting stories. 1. I'm alone, it's almost closing, I've already vacuumed and tidied because it was dead and I wasnt expecting anyone else in the next 15 minutes before I locked the doors. This lady comes in with her six (count em- 6) children who are all clearly hyped up on sugar (or nitrous oxide, or cocaine idfk) and proceeds to let them lay waste to the store while she was on her phone in the doorway. Not a "please do not climb the shelves" or a "dont tear the eyes off the stuffed animals" to he found. When I tell her were closing (through gritted teeth) she rounds them all up and says "it's so much better they do it here than at home huh?" And gives me that knowing laugh. Like... no no it's not better. I had to re clean the entire place. 2. Someone shat in the play kitchen. Not like a child poo either, like... big, adult, man poo (or perhaps a large dog). They also had to physically remove the plastic sink, take a poo, and then replace the sink. To this day I'm still bemused by how that could have happened without anyone noticing. 3. My boss (the owner) was told that I was unfit to be around children because I have tattoos and very visible self harm scars. My boss laughed her out of the store. 4. The cops were called once because a child somehow inhaled bubble solution without her mother noticing she unscrewed the top, broke the safety seal, and started trying to blow bubbles. Everything was nontoxic so the child was fine but her mother was hysterical. Also how does your 5 year old not understand how to blow a bubble? I think that says more about you as a parent than me. 5. "I want this one specific component of a kit but I dont want to buy the kit. Cant you just open it for me and give me the single piece?" 6. My French music was "teaching children islam" 7. "The birthday party is in 4 minutes! What do you mean you dont have this specific toy!?!?!? I'm going to throw an adult tantrum before I listen to your suggestions because you, 18 year old worker, obviously bought the last barbie horse set so this is all your fault!" 8. Just... the amount of terrible parenting I witnessed and had to bite my tongue about. One woman would bring her two kids in about once a month, let them each pick out a toy and then tell them "well maybe if you hadn't (talked back, bit your sister, eaten your greens, done your chores etc) then I would buy this for you but you are a horrible child and therefore get nothing!". Keep in mind these kids were about 4. 9. A parent once watched in mild amusement as their child proceeded to fling cheetos all over the store. 10. The number of times parents let their children hit, bite, punch, or kick me for no apparent reason. Teach em to hate retail employees young I guess? All that aside it was a great place to work and the boses were really kind to all of us and paid us well over minimum wage. Plus I got to cuddle stuffed animals and play with slime all day so it was really kind of great.

Something crashed.

The sound splintered the silence of the home and Dmitri stilled. He eyed his partly opened door, not daring to breathe.

He’d been sent to his room for most of the day while his “birthday” preparations were underway. It was mainly for show, but Dr. Montag seemed genuinely excited about the occasion. He’d always seemed excited about “family” things, and Dmitri had gotten to the point where it no longer felt...as threatening.

Sure, he wasn’t going to be calling him dad or uncle anytime--ever, but it was a nicer way of looking at family events then what he was used to. And what was he used to?

“What are you fucking stupid?” his aunt said, her voice booming throughout the house riddled with accusation.

Dmitri felt the rising panic in his throat and he tried to make himself smaller---quieter.

He eyed the open door like the stupid mistake it was.

Following this came softer apologies. Dr. Montag’s voice unclear, but concerned.

That brief moment didn’t last as his aunt lashed out again, “No--No-No! I will not be fucking shushed. This is my house, who do you think you are?” she said.

As if to emphasize her point she got even louder, “ What do you think this is? A game? You think we can play the house and make it work? No, I need commitment, not this---Don’t you dare try to bring that fucking parasite into this.” Dmitri heard stomping down the hall, getting closer, and she hissed, “It has to be perfect--You promised me we would be perfect--”

Her voice dropped, soft whimpers following.

“Patty please, the doctors said--”

“I don’t care what the doctors said, you're just… you’re just trying to make excuses--” She was hiccuping, her voice becoming more strangled, “I doubt you even love me. You said you wanted to keep trying, but now you're scared? What kind of man are you? What would my father think? If you don’t want to get married just say so you poor excuse for a gold digger.”

Silence.

No crying, no screaming, only silence.

Minutes later, he heard the front door close. Minutes after that he heard his aunt’s bedroom door slam.

Minutes later, Dmitri could be more bothered he supposed.

He could be more alarmed at the wave of nothingness he felt draining away at him. But he wasn’t sure what he had to be emotional about. His aunt? Sure he had constant guilt about anything to do with her, but nothing that ever made him feel like something wasn’t clicking.

Like something was just out of reach, so close, but now it was gone.

He went to tend to his plants. He maneuvered around the shattered glass, ignoring the birthday decor that will probably be unceremoniously trashed now that his aunt no longer had a fiance to show off--and no longer had a potential child to boast either.

She would never hear the end of it from his grandfather, he assumes, so in turn, he will never hear the end of it from her.

As he was picking his way through his tools and eyeing the nursery plants, he noticed a flat, wrapped box, knocked off one of the patio tables. It's tag clearly labeled with his name in fancy cursive script.

He glanced back at the house, fingers skimming the edge of the obnoxiously bright wrapping paper and carefully peeling it apart, hoping the creaking sounds weren’t as loud as they sounded in his head.

Inside where a pair of yellow gloves, gardening gloves, and a note.

I know I’ve only been in your life for a short amount of time, but I’m glad your aunt and I have decided to make it work. I’m glad to have met you.

Dmitri’s vision blurred, the paper’s ink becoming smudged and he tucked it away, shaking. Tears rolled down his face quickly and the more he tried to stop the more they came.

His throat was tight. He couldn’t breathe---his grip was tight on his shirt as if it would steady him but he couldn’t--he couldn’t---

He fumbled for his phone, the box hitting the ground sometime in between as he sank to the ground, hitting the first number in the contact list.

He needed to hear someone--god anyone. The dial tone felt like an eternity, each ring feeling a hammer to the chest.

Then finally he heard a click.

Then he heard a voice he hadn’t heard in a long time. Sure it was deeper, more assured, but at the end of the day, it was still---

“Emile?” Dmitri said, crying even harder.

this is the first time i've ever started writing my thoughts and feelings anywhere before. this is not easy.

instead of writing things and then deleting it all because its not good enough or it sounds stupid i'm just going to write it now and stop backspacing. i guess i should start with where i am in life right now so there is some perspective.

im 25, im a bakers apprentice, i live with my parents, i have a girlfriend, lets call her ‘C’ who for the first time feels right to me despite everything, i barely have any friends, they don't ever want to see me, i don't have much time in my life right now, i work all night and struggle to fit sleep into my schedule. but things are really the best they have ever been for me. i just started an AFL 9′s competition, weird i usually have no confidence going into these things and will either quit after the first practice or not even show up, i really kinda enjoyed it and am excited for next week.

i've wanted to start writing anything for a few months now, i guess now i have some time. time is so fucked up, i wish there was more of it, i wish i could sleep without wasting my day, i wish i didn't have to compromise sleep for everything but i do, i guess its part of being a baker, its a job i am loving and i think i've found my life passion but it has its ups and downs. my partner C expects a lot of my time i guess, she can be very needy at times, demanding almost, sometimes i feel pressured by her to sacrifice my sleep, personal plans and hobbies and interests for her, but i know what she feels, she wants the same thing i do. she has problems making friends, or keeping friends, she feels isolated and alone, and she wants my companionship, and i want that too and despite anything i feel in the moment i always feel happy about her at the end of the day.

i should be grateful for the relationship i am in right now, i really should be grateful for a lot of stuff, my parents for allowing me to stay here still, being so supportive and also allowing and accepting of me and really tolerant of the shit i do. ok so i do smoke week every day right so that's already something to do at home that's difficult, i'm pretty sure they know and don't care or even agree that my life has been better since i started smoking, fuck i used to be on antidepressants, i took one every day at a certain time, it made me feel a bit better, ok sounds just like smoking right, expect when i didn't take this pill i got nausea, headaches, severe episodes of depression, i couldn't eat my appetite was so fucked up i was eating one meal a day and it was like a piece of bread or takeaway food. since the smoking started i've found some actual passion in life, i don't feel like a useless number anymore i guess.

one of the things on my mind always is my friends, since i was in highschool i havent really had a group of friends, i feel like i am a social person but then when it comes to it i feel like i just get burned. a lot of my old friends turned out to be secretly hating me and not wanting me around, some sort of pity friendship, i was an asshole in my time and honestly was not a good friend myself, do you pay for the dumb shit you do as a teenager, the people you fuck over go from your life completely yet new people you meet do the same things to you like they know. i had/have a long term best friend, J, we had been mates for years, we worked at my old job dominoes together for a bit, and kinda hung out a few times, but not until we got into PC gaming together did we form a bond. after that we would chat every day, play games together, watch the footy together, go places even though he lived across the city from me. one thing that changed massively in my life was i quit drinking alcohol, and then i felt like all my friends both disagree with my choice and resent me for it, like for some reason i have to take the same drugs they are taking at that time to be their friends. so J has just grown more and more distant, i get that we are older now, we both have partners, jobs that take a lot of our time, but then when we hang out or talk he seems disinterested, more interested with his friends that i introduced him to (from our discord server) and has seemingly replaced me, none of these guys i really like at all, in fact the only one of the new group i like is the one girl in it because she actually has interesting things to say.

fuck that was a paragraph, i guess i should talk about alcohol.

alcohol has fucked up my life, i cant repair the mistakes and stupid things i did while drinking alcohol, so they are there, i guess its just talking about it left. to start off, when i drink alcohol i have a hard time finding my limit, i feel like i swing from nothing to completely blacked out, puking, sobbing and basically hating myself very quick, i feel sick for days after drinking, barely able to eat, leave bed, move, i feel so nauseous and tired, its so fucked up what it does to your body, but oh your mind is even worse. i've broken off relationships, cheated, threatened people, gotten into fights, brawls, got my arm broken, hurt myself repeatedly, gotten arrested and a criminal record that may prevent me from going to canada next year, and is currently delaying booking flights, ive missed work, shown up drunk same clothes no shower to work, but the main thing that alcohol does to me is makes me sad. alcohol makes me so fucking sad, it makes me reach into the deepest pits i can think of and brings out all the emotions that are in there, my ex being the main one. every time i used to drink id think of her, call her, text her, go on her facebook, look up her instagram her twitter, fuck it drive my car to her house to see if her cars there like that does anything or means anything just fucking alcohol is so stupid. i never want to feel like that again, i never want to sabotage my life, sabotage and self destruct my relationships, but i guess losing my friends is the thing i have to take in consideration. australia is a fucked up place, where drinking heavily is the social norm and if you don't get fucked up or even have a beer with mates you're a loser.

i just want a deep connection with my friends. when i was in newcastle with my partner, i met her friends there that she had been living with, despite the fucked up things that happened to her there, she lost a lot of friends herself and a long time friend, had trouble finding new ones, trouble fitting in, the friends she had there were the most honest and truly welcoming, connecting people ive met, and i miss that. i miss having a friend you can just, go over to their place, sit around for 3-4 hours talking shit, laughing, listening to music, relaxing and sharing stories and shit. weird that people can have such an effect on you in a short time. the life i live here is full of making plans, only for them to be cancelled, inviting friends over, for nobody to show up, cancelled plans all the fucking time, i've never been asked to just come over and chill, never its always some group thing that i'm invited to as well. i even try talking to them about this, i told a group of girl friends i have, i miss you all and haven't seen you in so long, we need to have a casual hangout, and the message was almost completely ignored, i asked them all to come to mind to watch the grand final, the house was free, i got a big projector screen, big comfy couch, live central right in the middle of everyone, nobody even replied or brought it up again, yet the second someone else that lives in the far corners of perth brought it up everyone started chatting about their plan to go. so if that's not my friends making it obvious they don't want to see me, they only include me then thats fucked up. i don't know what to say, this happens all the time, my 21st birthday i invited 65 people, and less than 15 people showed up. its hard to keep trying, always trying, i always try to make social events, i always ask friends what they are doing, when they can see me, make plans, they get cancelled, they are busy, they say they're coming then don't show up, most of the time i never hear a word too, they just dont show and don't even apologize, is that a fair thing to do, yeah sometimes i dont go to my friends events, i'm too fucking tired or just don't feel like going, somethings come up, i tell them straight away i cant make it i'm sorry this has come up, yet i don't get the same courtesy.

am i an unlikable person

the guys at work seem to like me, so i started a baking apprenticeship, basically i started watching great british bake off and picked it up as a hobby, making cakes and stuff, actually i should go back. so i used to work in some shitty small software company in the city, 9-5, peak hour traffic, office drama, workplace bullies, understaffed, overworked, red tape and bullshit everywhere, i quit after 2.5 years for mental health reasons, i made a lot of money but had to move on, so i spent a year off , it was only supposed to be a few months, go on a holiday road trip with my then partner, S, she broke up with me via a text message right after eagles lost to melbourne at home, basically the footy game was more disappointing, we had a shit relationship, i think i resented her, i cheated on her, yeah i'm an awful person and deserve everything, she was an emotionally manipulative person, terrified of her own body and sex, tried to dominate my life and change me, im glad we broke up. so i stayed unemployed for a long time, over a year, barely looking, until i found this baking apprenticeship, not only did i apply for the job and write a completely custom cover letter (im so fucking lazy i usually close a job application the second it requires anything more than an apply button) AND i called back a few weeks later when i heard nothing, well turns out that call landed me the job, the apprentice they hired instead of me was useless, had no passion and was a slow worker. so i got the job, and basically have been killing it ever since, i get a lot of praise at work (lots of criticism too) baking is one of those things that takes time, its all about time, so i got a lot to learn but i am actually confident once in my life, holy shit i have a job i like and am good at. is this the dream?> lol

so today i started writing my feelings down, and its kinda felt good, but i'm exhausted now, and my fingers hurt, so this is the end of my first post, i hope nobody reads it, its really just for me but i don't know.

Today has been up and down

Up and down up and down. It hasn't stopped. Not since morning...all i wanted was for you to have the best birthday.for you to be happy on your birthday. I wished and I manifested. And I'm so so happy to hear have had the the happy birthday you deserve.

Aw you looked so cute today...your birthday sash that was completely adorable on you and odlysuited you really well...i thought you looked so so good in it...every day I look at you.

Hehe you really did look like 'the king of the day' , or whatever it said on that sash...

I take a moment (it many) to take in your beauty. I'm always shocked at how much of an immense amount of beauty you posses...its like every day your beauty gets more and more ethereal...

You always just radiate this aura that attracts me so much...whether it's through your beauty or through anything you do...its just wow.

And today your aura was such a beautiful one. It was almost like you were glowing with the birthday fever of happiness and excitement, and as soon as you were in my presence I felt it too.

But yes the highlight of my day personally was that moment.when you came over to me excited and in a lil clumsy shy tizz, and I told you happy birthday and you said it back to me. That was one of the most cute things I've ever seen you do irl...i wanna hear you do it again....

The rest of that lesson, which was English went by.

I got the plesure of being able to look at my birthday boy being happy out of the corner of my eye while trying to write something down about lady macbeth or whatever.but ngl I was definitely more focused on you.

English is that lesson of the day where I can look at your side profile for 50 minutes streight. And I love your side profile just watching you talk to someone or look at the bird or my personal favourite thing to watch is you running your hands through your hair, and from the side I get the best veiw.

I swear most of what I do in English is watch you like your something very very interesting on the TV lol.

But your side profile...its like a ethereal painting of an angel...so beautiful...and also kinds hot at the same time...

I got to the class sat down and..wellt thought about you ngl. Just in a general way. Panicked that everyone else had got you better stuff for your birthday, and that I haddnt done enough, since I was the one with the honour of being your girlfriend.

I between these thoughts I was doing the actual work that needed doing, and turning round to cheak the clock despite having a watch on.

Anything to see a glimpse of you, the light of my life in a dull 50 minute gray morbidity that is also known as Pysics.

The main event in physics was when you walked to the front of the class, allowing my eyes to take in your whole immage. I basically held by breath and just focused on you till I started subconsciously fiddling with my stapler again and gazing at you, basically drooling under my mask and then...

I stapled my mf finger. Your mf beautiful self made me staple my finger. It diddnt really hurt, until it started pissing out blood. I put a plaster on it and it was fine, but it shows how much of a klutz I am, and also how much of a sucker for you I also am...

Then it was breaktime. I gave you your present, and told you not to open it in front of me. Ngl it was a selfish asf thing to say...i was really self conscious...beacuse I knew everyone had got you great presents, especially after you told me that naci had made such an effort for you...

But just if your ever reading this, I've been envious of her ever since I've first saw her. Life isn't fair why can't I look like her?! I swear you'd be with her if I wasn't there...shes just wow. But yes I was really self conscious, and feeling in my full on jelous moody people hate mood, especially for the people who you were friends with...

It was probably down to the 3 hours of sleep I'd been getting for the last week each night, and the fact I'd been on the edge. But I feel really bad for saying that... I should have just lrt you open them...

Ngl I wish I'd have been able to see you put on a smile when you opened it. Put on the bracelet I made for you...too late now, but ig this will be a lesson to future me...

I swear allot of the time I use these blogs for getting better. Like being better to you cuz I read through my mistakes and I try to be better. That's why I'm making a note of these things lol.

Then I went with Angel beacuse I knew if I stuck around I could be a harard, being a jelous sleep deprived slightly Yandere aspie girl, I just decided to remove myself, cuz I was feeling like a big angry self concous raincloud and wanted to stay out of your way to give you the best day possible lol.

Where did I go wrong? A few months back, I backed out of a parking place and stopped, waiting for traffic behind me to resolve itself. While stopped, a large vehicle backed into my driver side door. We both re-parked. The other driver first tried to convince me there was no damage and we should both forget it but after I showed him the damage to my door (his car had almost no damage), we exchanged insurance and personal contact information in a friendly conversation. I reported the damage to my insurance carrier, a large national firm, obtained the required 2 estimates for repair and submitted it, as directed by my carrier and his, to his carrier, a large regional carrier. They informed me he had decided my car was not stopped and so I bore responsibility for his backing his car into me (!), and they therefore were refusing to pay me. My insurance carrier said it was up to me to provide proof my car wasn't moving, regardless of the fact his car backed into mine! I approached the repair firm, and they provided me with photos and offered testimony to state that my car was obviously stopped, based on the damage to the door. I called the individual and said with this information unless he paid the bill in full, I would take him to small claims court. He argued but produced a check for the full amount. A month later, my insurance carrier raised my rate based on this incident and a highway speeding ticket over a year ago. I ended up paying more for my insurance and lost a great deal of time despite both of us being insured. Where did I go wrong?""

My Martial Arts Story (TKD)

today i miss my dojang extra... i woke up from a dream where i was supposed to spar but didnt have my dobok?? and one of my instructors handed me a.. dobok skirt?? and i was like? and he was like yeah u right this isnt gonna work sdbsmdfjsdd i dont really ever have tkd dreams (i think bc i usually am always doing tkd) but since i stopped for a bit the dreams are coming out. it made me miss sparring so much :( so below i wanted to talk about my tkd story in more detail. Enjoy!

i've actually always been a martial arts nerd, but moved around/focused on studying too much to commit to one until recently. I was talking to my mom the other day and neither of us can really remember what got me into it. I just remember wanting to be able to defend myself and be/feel strong from a very young age, and i knew martial arts was a way to do that. As a girl I also received a lot of messages that my gender was ‘weak’ and needed ‘protection’, which i really didnt like (it made me hate being a girl for some time). This is why i wanted to try martial arts. I discovered taekwondo when I was around 10 years old at a small dojang in my hometown. I loved the school & the master, who I remember always had a bamboo stick he would play around with when the kids started being rowdy (he never hit anyone, it was just his way to say ‘dont fck with me’ haha). but had to stop going after yellow belt because i was the oldest out of all the kids and i tried to go to adult classes for a while but i remember not liking it because it was ‘too slow’ for me and my mom couldnt drive me to late night classes. I was swimming a lot at the time too (fun fact i almost competed in synchronized swimming as a kid but had to stop due to illness (am totally fine now and it wasnt bad dont worry)).

I didn’t do any martial arts in middle school, and only had brief encounters when i started high school. I dabbled in kick boxing (which i still love) through an intense week long training while i was on holiday with family, and then did a bit of karate, for which sadly i had not such a great experience with the instructor which made me distance myself from the sport. The instructor brought up a heavy personal life event during class and i broke down (what did she expect i was like 15 and that event was really hard). When my mom picked me up, she shook her head to her and said ‘girls...’ in a very demeaning way, as if me crying because she re-awoke trauma was a result of ‘feminine weakness.’ i have not forgiven that person for that comment yet. she shouldn’t be a teacher if she treats students like that in my opinion. High school was very competitive and intense so i focused on studying and didnt really do sports then.

In college I really want to do more martial arts, but the lack of proper clubs or instructors made it difficult. I then went to study abroad in seoul and thought to myself if i dont try tkd again in the literal birthplace of the sport what am i doing with my life. i had good experiences with classes at uni; the two masters i had had very different personalities (one was very outspoken and funny while the other.. you could FEEL the power of tkd when he touched your arm slightly to place it correctly sdhfskdj he was very nice though). I had to stop because i was focusing on my academic projects though.

i then graduated and moved to the city, where finally there were plenty of martial arts opportunities! the first thing i did after moving to the city, even before moving into my apartment, was to visit my current dojang. i audited a class and in my head was like ’oh my god i MUST join them right now give me a dobok let’s GO’. I signed up for classes that day. The dojang master (my dad. my father, the love of my life (in the most platonic way)) was a seoulite (we bonded over that) and realized I hadn’t started my job yet so he gave me a discount, which i felt incredibly surprised by and grateful for. I started lessons the next day. at my dojang beginners usually get 3 private classes at the beginning to get the basics down before joining the group. after my first, the instructor said that i was probably ready to go with the group if i felt comfortable doing so bc i already had basics. i went every day until i moved into my apartment, when i had a mental and physical breakdown and got really sick for a week (like.. i dont remember feeling this weak and sick my entire life).

But thankfully i got better and pushed myself to go to dojang again. and it was hard. it was the summer and i hadnt used my body really in years, if ever at that level of practice. three times a week as Difficult for me, physically. i remember being frustrated that my ego wasnt satisfied haha (i thought i remembered a lot more than i did). but i loved the instructors a ton and practice was a great safe space/stress relief for the other sht that was going on my my life. I do remember that i was ready to graduate from white belt and start feeling better about my moves by the end of that summer (i was pretty frustrated that i couldnt do higher level moves, though mostly at myself).

i finally got yellow stripe and tkd things went uphill from then. i got to know ppl at my dojang better, started to go to practice more progressively. I got my yellow belt and decided then that i wanted tkd to always be in my life as much as possible. I started going to practice every day or almost every day. my tkd friendships were developing, there were small disagreements too but overall i fell more and more in love with my instructors, the dojang master (again, my dad) and the sport. we laughed so much, sweat so much, lived well.

after green stripe, my self consciousness during practice spiked a bit more than usual. this is probs bc my life outside of tkd was stressful and i was looking at my friend fellow tkd members who were higher level more. i wasnt jealous of them, far from it, i just felt small compared to what they were able to achieve and felt bad that the instructor had to stop to explain the technique to me Again. in case it wasn’t clear, i am no prodigy; i learn slowly and with long consistent practice. the two disagreements i had with my closest member friends (two separate very different reasons; we kept things civil on both sides but having to deal with that was a new experience for me so i wasnt great at it haha) didnt help my anxiety shut up during practice. i still kept at it. in january my school has an attendance challenge where you win prizes if you go every day or more than 20 days out of the month. I almost made it, but got really physically tired & kinda sick 3 days before then end of jan and had to miss one session. i was also mentally drained by life stuff so i decided to prioritize grad school applications and did less tkd in february. but that experience of going every damn day was so fun; i realized I needed to do this so much more. if there was a tkd seminar where they send you off somewhere to to tkd for like 3 months i would be down. that is when i realized my love for the sport, and the significant changes in my body that had been occurring over the past months really revealed themselves. i hear you thinking there’s no way i could fall more in love with my instructors but guess what... spending every day with them really made the love Explode dudes. In jan and fed i also really started loving sparring, even though im not great at it.

and then... march came. i got lucky to have been able to celebrate my birthday a few days before they decided to close my state down. at first i was still able to go to my dojang with smaller classes and different format of classes that respected health guidelines, but eventually everything was moved online. during that week of limited classes, i got to hang out with friend members and instructors for what would be, unbeknownst to me, one of the last times. one night after (6 feet no contact) starring, me, 2 friend members who also went very frequently and an instructor had a beer on the mats just talking and chilling. we said that we would do it again the week after. and then the state decided to shut down small businesses. i was helping the dojang transfer their classes to an online format with another student for a week (we two were the members with the highest attendance in the recent times), but then the instructors decided they should not let students come in anymore.

i was angry, i was sad, i was devastated. it was the sound solution to take and all these closings are essential and needed for public health safety, but emotionally i was not ready to let go of the dojang. i was angry at the circumstances for taking away the one thing that i truly loved and kept me going all those months of less than ideal job situation and lost of existential questions. the dojang had been my challenge, my rock, my family. i was especially angry because i had to mourn the loss of it a lot earlier than i wanted; i was already supposed to leave in june of this year. the closer june came the more teary eyed i got when i thought of leaving the dojang, but after the news i had to stop going now... i broke down. i cried so hard and loudly, alone in my room. i realize now it was the first time in my life that i cried because of love. pure, unaltered love. i thought to myself ‘how lucky is it that i felt this amount of love for something and some people’. ive moved a lot in my life but rarely felt sad when leaving a place; i often had made my goodbyes and knew it was just time to go. there were few or no things keeping me back, or i knew i would find those things somewhere else. it was also the first time i had let myself fall in love with something and people only for me. i love studying and learning for example, but when i started doing it it was mostly to make my mom and family happy, not for me. i didn’t feel like i had had a passion that i completely gave in into, a truly ‘me’ thing no one asked me or expected me to do but i just did not to have a better resume or be perceived better by society. until tkd.

now, i am still following online classes but mostly have my own training routine because it’s still hard to deal with the emotional stuff; i dont really do to live classes cause it hurts. it probably sounds strange but ive already done the emotional work of distancing myself to make the leaving less difficult. i also didnt really like the the idea of practicing in my room in front of the camera. seeing the other students on zoom would also make me feel v sad. im slowly getting out of that state of mind though and might start taking online classes again in a bit when i can’t do my regular training routine. im not sure when things will go back to normal but before i leave i will definitely send them gifts and goodbye messages, probably by mail. but yeah as of now i mostly follow my dojang’s videos, do my practice routine, and scroll through tkd tricking videos on instagram to keep motivated.

it’s kind of a sad note to end on but my tkd story does not end here. wherever im headed next I will find another dojang where i will continue to practice. i can only hope it is half as good as the family i found here. and of course now I have this blog! and will continue nerding out about kicking endlessly hahaha.

recovery

recently, there was a major fire in my city. a little before the fire happened, i went through probably the lowest point in my life i’ve been in thus far. it culminated into one night of forcing myself to break down a number of walls and fake fronts i put up around me. these stood for about 5 years.

during that 5 year period i lied to myself and tried to trick myself into thinking i was something else so i could fit in with my rapidly changing friend groups, both online and in real life. i started distancing myself from a number of things, including shows, interests, and friends. i pushed away mlp for fear that my friends who were now falling out of it would ditch me if i were still into it. i pushed away my desire to learn music because the relationship between my brother and i only got worse as high school went on. i pushed away old friend groups for reasons so stupid i dont remember anymore.

instead of doing videos for fun and my own enjoyment, i started making them with the intention of becoming popular. i was never good at those and i wasn’t willing to learn to make myself better because i only wanted the success. the worst part about this was the fact that i did it for so long i managed to make myself believe that this was what i wanted, to be making low effort gaming videos on youtube well past its peak. because that’s what I thought I was going to “make it” doing. it should be noted i pushed away a group of youtuber friends before this, who may have been able to talk sense into me.

to this day i have only met one other person who makes videos.

fast forward to a few months ago. back in june, i started a new job, the one im currently working, doing lifeguarding at a pool. in july, my friends and i did our annual trip to anime expo, and aside from some incidents it was fun. i went on vacation with my family to arizona, and we saw a number of beautiful sights. i enjoyed it a lot.

however, this is the end of the fun.

anime expo, as always, brought me the panic of being around so many people. it isn’t the volume of people however, im relatively comfortable in a crowd. its the idea that i can look around in any direction and see people probably way happier and in better places in life than i am. look one way, i see a group of attractive people in cosplay that’s way better than mine. look the other way, i see a group of friends all laughing and clearly have shared interests, unlike my friends where we all have kinda splintered tastes so we don’t spend all the time together at conventions.

i spent a good amount of the convention wandering it with my friend mike. we went as Haru and Rin from Free, him being Haru, me being Rin.

around that time i was having major self image issues. i gained a good amount of weight the months prior, and i couldn’t lose it no matter what i tried, and consistently going to the gym, doing workouts given to me by professionals showing me no change killed my motivation. i couldn’t get myself to even go anymore come june.

so when mike was stopped by 10+ people (i stopped counting after a while) for pictures and to compliment him on his cosplay, meanwhile outright ignoring me, i started feeling like my image issues weren’t just “in my head” like i’d been told. despite this i tried my best to ignore it and move on. except i couldn’t.

the other cosplay i did was a crossplay of Mako Mankanshoku from Kill la Kill. I actually had the right length/hair color for Mako’s hair, so I saved money on a wig and got it cut like hers. the hair actually looked fine in context of the cosplay, however the cosplay in the context of anything was atrocious.

i couldn’t fit into the seifuku i bought, despite being sure to buy a size much larger than what you’d expect. trying to ignore my brain telling me im a fat fuck i improvised with a white shirt and a light blue neckerchief. with the wrong color shoes, basic shirt, neckerchief, basic skirt, and my hair cut instead of a wig, i was the definition of awful cosplay.

i hyped up finally being able to crossdress in public to myself for months. i’ve wanted to crossdress publicly since i was 15. at no other convention in the past did i have the courage. i got rid of pretty much all body hair, and upon finally being able to do so, i thought it was everything i wanted.

looking in the mirror showed me i was nothing more than an ugly fatass trying to look cute. i was the fucking person people at conventions take candid photos of and post on tumblr to make fun of. im sure im gonna one day come across a picture of me in that “cosplay” accompanied with some text about how embarrassing i was.

so with now both my cosplays fun sucked out of them by myself, the rest of the convention went on, but i couldn’t fully suppress the idea that i was unhappy.

the arizona trip i’ll save for another post, it’s a complete offshoot with it’s own backstory.

these are nowhere near all of the events i feel caused enough problems for what happens later, just the major ones. also there’s no way i can write every single thing that’s happened to me and contributed to my sad demeanor over the last 21 years.

after that though, the rest of the summer is a blur, i dont remember anything i did, and i don’t remember starting school again. i just know i’ve been going for almost 16 weeks now.

for some reason, a lot of things that didn’t use to bug me have been bugging me. stuff that I thought i’d grown accustomed to seeing, like the ever poisonous anti-male rhetoric that this site likes to parade. i’ve been on tumblr since i was like 13, i’ve seen it, i should be used to it and know to ignore it, right?

i guess not. every post i see related to something meant to make me feel shitty for being a guy takes another chip at me throughout the day. despite my best efforts i can’t forget them.

i just don’t have the energy to put up with stuff anymore, and it really feels like im out of energy to put into caring about things. i’ve been feeling like this since the beginning of the above five year period of not knowing why i wasn’t happy with what i was supposed to be happy with.

eventually we get to one saturday at work. two pools are being used for an event, the third is being rented out for a kids birthday party. im on the tower supervising the party when my best friend kaylie comes to rotate me. we chat for a sec, and as i start to walk off, she says my name. i turn around and she points at the water. no more than 3 feet from where im standing, two kids are wrestling in the water. except they weren’t wrestling for fun, they were wrestling to get on top of one another and drowning each other in the process. mind you, this is the deepest part of the pool and it’s only like 4 1/2 feet deep. I slide in, hoist up both of them, and launch into the caring procedure bullshit.

i get them out, tell kaylie im going to get a towel, and eventually other guards start asking me what happened. all of the sudden people are toting me as being a hero for making my first rescue withing my first year. you’d think that’s something to be proud of, right?

yeah you’d think that.

i felt nothing. all i had was that i was doing my job, and if it were like ten seconds earlier kaylie would’ve got them. i didn’t do anything special.

of course that ended up as a conflict in my mind, and on the way home i bought alcohol and spent the night drinking alone.

fast forward a few more days, and i get home from work. it wasn’t a particularly hard day, or any major thing happened, just a lot of small little things that chipped away at my patience, a few comments made by coworkers that really weren’t asked for, and this and that ultimately led to me driving home at the end of the night upset.

i get home, and think to myself im going to unwind with some video games. i dont remember what happened or what i was playing, but some major thing happened that led to me calmly turning off the game and turning to my computer to stare at it for the next two hours, only occasionally clicking to something new.

nobody tells you what it’s like to break. partly because, they cant. the way i see it everyone breaks differently. every breakdown i’d had up until that point had been loud, angry, and full of jerky motions through teary, blurred eyes. they were like someone kicking over something i was making in one fell swoop.

this time it felt like i watched someone pick away at the foundation until it all started to slide down like sand.

i broke, at first without tears, questioning what i was doing at that moment, and what i was doing in general. nothing made sense. my head couldn’t keep a thought for a moment. i felt like my chest was caving in. i didnt end up eating anything that night. i honestly can’t describe how i felt and what i did, it was such a blur.

i started going on a nostalgia scavenger hunt. something i had seen recently drove me to want to search out the mlp meetup group i used to be a part of. i found pictures of me and my friends at different events back in 2011, 2012, and i started doing what i can only describe as motioning a whimper. as in, whatever you picture when you think of whimpering, only without sound.

I saw pictures of me being happy, truly happy. i hadn’t been truly happy in the last 5-6 years since these pictures were taken. at least not for more than the occasional time.

as if on queue, a friend from one group of friends i changed myself to fit in with messaged me. i asked him if he wanted to take a trip with me, and i spilled everything.

i confessed to being a liar, a poser, a shitty person who couldn’t even tell his friends that he wasn’t everything he said he was. i told him at one point in my life i had actual ambition and ways to achieve success outside of being the scummy piece of shit i’d become when i became friends with them. (please dont misunderstand, they’re good people, i just had a warped sense of what i needed to do to be their friend back then)

he let me angrily type and rant and have a major breakdown to him without interruption for almost an hour, and finally he paused me and started trying to talk me through this.

after he gave me his piece on the matter, i turned to another one of my best friends, jacob. jacob was one of the irl friends i went to meetups with, and we’ve been friends since middle school. we’re closer than anyone else i know i’d bet, even closer than kaylie and i.

because of time differences, our conversation lasted the next two days, basically telling him everything, that i wasn’t happy with myself, that i haven’t been happy with anything for a long time. the only thing that mattered to me in his response was that nothing was different between us. he said he was going to a therapist soon, and said that i should try it. i have not, and i dont plan to for fear of what i might find out. still, everything he said i took to heart and i thank him for it.

at this point, i decided that i could fix all of this, that i could make myself someone i’d like to be. i was going to work hard and no matter what i wasn’t going to break like that ever again. nothing was going to stop me, no matter the odds.

someone up there must love testing my patience.

a week later, the fire happened. within the span of an hour i had gone from coming home from a test, to helping my mom with the recycling, to rushing home because the sky over our house was brown. the next few hours was me running on no food, a sweaty, ash-covered mess, to get everything of importance out of the house. everything that was too hard to replace was taken. as painful as it was it meant leaving behind just about everything that had value to me, as i took only the things that mattered in a worldly view, not a personal view.

God listened to my prayers that day, and the fires burned half a mile from my house, but no closer. The trail i walked a thousand times growing up was no more. it’s about 4 houses down from mine, to give perspective. everything was black and soot, trees stood with burn marks and missing leaves. The creek was dried up. everything is a mess. i walked out and took pictures of it a few days after, just for memory sake.

that day was a test to see whether or not I was actually going to keep my word. i didn’t break that day, despite wanting to often, and i did what was most important for my family.

since then, i’ve shuffled around a lot of different aspects of my life. a lot of things are changing, and im not comfortable with a lot of them. however, these are good changes. i have to make myself uncomfortable to be able to find what i belong to once again.

and i hope and i pray that this is going to be the time i prove to myself i can break out of this

I depended on you, With my entire being, And it was not easy battling PTSD. Being a Sophomore was a time of my life, Where I almost got kidnapped, and I tried to die. Not once, nothing less, more than twice. Three times the charm, But I stayed alive. Imagine being 15, discovering weed and alcohol, Dealing with teenage depression, But also battling an attempt abduction. Most 15 year olds like going out to break innocence, Of course i liked all of those things, But I was struggling with multiple life changing situations. I wanted my life to fit the definition of normalcy, But there was no way normal could be a word in Sissy Mascari’s vocabulary. Being the center of attention in every room, With my small stomach and thick thighs, I lived to impress, But my happiness was in the sky. I tried reaching for the stars, Pulling down positivity, But all i could reach was the trace of your memory. I was SO infatuated and i have no idea why It seems like a mental illness in disguise. I tried to put a smile on, And make everybody laugh. But in a room full of people, My life was still black. You expected too much from me, By thinking i could be sane. I wasn’t enough for myself, Not even close, not a piece of me was sane. Silly you- it was your mistake, 2014 was a time in my life, Of repression and being emotionally drained. I’m sorry again, Would you have preferred me to die? you impressed me more and more every single day and you didn’t know why because you were so mentally drained exhaustion from school, its your senior year you’re doing everything you can to keep your head clear. a month of being in a psych ward, the breeze on my finger tips i hadn’t felt the sun rays in weeks, nor the cold or the wind. its my first day back at school, what will people say do they know i was gone? it only felt like a couple of days.. as i walk to my first class, the first face i see, i recognize these bright blue eyes, that were winking at me. its crazy how fast i forgot about being minutes away from death just by seeing your energy an angelic sociopath the pain i felt when you didn’t reply made me drown deeper to the bottom of the ocean and reminded me of why i wanted to die. theres never an easy way to explain it. especially if you dont have an out. no fix, no numbing, there was no easy route. freshly being 16, i started to drink until i started consuming excessive amounts, i started to struggle to think.. i only found happiness at the end of the bottle drinking 1 shot, to 14, before you knew it i was gone. it numbed my feelings it made me forget the problems it made me forget you ghosting me and it was a temporary out. just please know if you read this, my heart dropped to the ground because you didn’t text me back not a second went by where i wasn’t reflecting on that. what if you never saw me again, and the only time you saw my name was while standing in front of a plaque. When that ran through my head, it turned my soft spot in my heart for you black. I don’t know why i was crazy, I’m not sure why I cared. I am speaking for a girl that I don’t know anymore, And apologizing for her. She has acted like a psycho, To kill for your attention, All she ever wanted, Was to simply be your friend. It wasn’t out of love what she did for you, It was out of care. You confuse sugar with salt, And I confused salt with sugar. I like being solo, Without you, living for me. The dreamer in me came back awhile ago, She sings, dances, and cries. She loves videography, Astrology, stars, and cheese fries. The me you knew, will forever be gone. She was one toxic mother fucker, And waited too long. To fix her head, She put her life in everyone’s hands, You had to tiptoe around her, Worrying you’d get caught in quicksand. The quick reactions, and pointed fingers, She was always “ too much “. That girl is somebody that i could never trust. I had this alter ego, Half of me i loved, The other half being my own worst enemy, A ticking time bomb. She lived her life with the adrenaline rush of doing bad things, Whether it was stealing alcohol, Or on sundays being a hypocrite and singing church music at willow creek. My parents would hear a phone ring and worry that it would be someone telling them I killed myself, I yelled at them every day at the top of my lungs, I now talk to them and tell them when I have a problem. I let the most important people to me in my life Live in pain, Worry, And heart ache. i have this over filled heart with so much love it was after i fell you didn’t catch me that i told myself to jump my hands reached the railing and my feet were stepping high onto the red pole in between the sea and the end of my life something hit me hard and told me not to give up because a person isn’t worth my happiness and that’s what i learned to love. as i say goodbye to you this is the final time the last chance i get to tell u the impact you had on my life i no longer fear the thought of being alone and i never would’ve learned that if you hadn’t come along one day you will realize i had good intentions i never meant to hurt you i just felt so much affection It’s crazy that i will never know If i ever cross your mind, If you ever think about me And our past that has died It’s sad where we have to leave off, Because you will look back and remember me for the bad, And for the person I’m not. I don’t understand how I wound up being the one who’s somehow in the wrong, but I should have expected it. You’re great at making yourself the victim and making the world seem like it’s out to get you. And these days I’m so fucking sad that things are turning out this way. But I’m also so fucking mad that you chose this path. That’s the thing that I don’t think you understand. YOU chose this. You chose your pride over our friendship the second you chose to ignore my engagement. You chose to sit in your silence and self-righteous anger. And then you chose to expect me to reach out to you. Instead of saying anything at all to me, I had to reach the end of my fucking rope before anything came out. I expected so much more from you as one of my supposed best friends. But if I’m being perfectly honest, our friendship has always been one sided. I’ve always tried so hard to make everything good and easy for you, I’ve always tried to listen to everything going on in your life long after you became a trigger for me. I killed myself in college staying up late to check on you because I loved you and because I cared so goddamned much. I did everything for you. You were my first priority for years. I couldn’t go to bed without telling you I loved you, or wake up without saying good morning. And I think that might have gone deeper for me than I cared to analyze. But it’s not like any of that matters anymore. You’ve got your own life to live, and thankfully, I have mine. I can’t continuously break my back for you and give you all the attention I used to, and I think our friendship suffered more because of that than anything else. Because I started putting myself before you. This is such a hard thing for me because I want so badly to make jabs and hurt you like I’m hurting but I don’t think you’d care. I’ve always been the type of person to check on old friends to make sure they’re okay, but you’ve got me on some bullshit. Yes honey, unfortunately there are things that will always remind me of you. I can’t wipe them from my memory. But the thing is, things will always remind you of me too. And my god, I hope it hurts. I hope you remember that you had someone who always fought to be in your corner, and that for whatever reason, you didn’t give a shit. I hope you wonder about me, and that you become curious and see how my life is progressing. I hope you ache over the lost invitation to my wedding, feel the gap at what would have been your presence in my children’s lives. I hope the reality of your decision to cut out what might have been a lifelong friendship really shakes you to the bone. Because as angry as I am, I am also heartbroken. Heartbroken over the pettiness and anger that’s been left in the wake of our friendship. And I’m sorry, but I’m not big enough to hope that it doesn’t hurt you, too. I hope it does.

I had a son. His name is Anduin Elliot. He was born on March 28th. Your mom and your sister both congratulated me. They both know he exists, what he looks like. I wonder if you do. My entire pregnancy came and went without you. This huge life change came and went without you. There was a card I got mid way through from some sort of advertising company trying to market baby things to me. They sent me a handwritten card with a bunch of coupons inside. The card was signed by someone named Jen. I can't describe to you the ache that the sight left in my chest. I cried over that stupid letter because I imagined what it might have been like to actually get a letter from you congratulating me on my son. My SON Jen. My heart still hurts every day. Sometimes I'm angry, sometimes I'm sad. Most days I just wish I could forget. But I can't. And I don't. I think about you every day. And for the life of me, I wish I didn't. I hope you think about me. I hope that theres a world out there where I get to share the most beautiful thing I've ever done with you. I hope that one day soon I can let go.

I wish I knew how to stop checking up on you. It's like some sort of sick routine? I wonder how you're doing, I start to worry, then I check your blogs. I still hope for updates, I still hope to find out if you're doing okay. I still hope that you're happy. And in the midst of all that I'm resentful. I'm resentful that you are so in my head.

I saw your post about bringing your OC's back, that you weren't sure if you could write them without me. A really selfish part of me hopes you cant. That my ability to write with you is what made those characters what they are. Another part of me hopes that you will. I'm not sure if that's because I'm hoping you'll remember the good parts of our friendship and miss me, or if seeing those characters exist without me will help me just forget. I dont know.

One of your old friends reached out to me. I have no clue how she found me, or how she found this post. Probably did a little digging, but I guess you got into her head pretty good too. She told me that you two used to be really close, and then you cut her off without explanation. Do you do this to people? Bring them close and use them until you can't? Did you do that to me?

I dreamt about you a few weeks ago. I dreamt that we were at a house together, and that you were meeting Anduin for the first time. I could see you holding him and talking to him and I was so happy in a really distant way, like even in my sleep I knew it wasnt actually happening. It broke my heart when I woke up.

I dont know what the point of adding to this anymore is. Sometimes I think about what it would be like for you to reach out and apologize. Sometimes I wonder if we would even be able to bridge this gap. I doubt it. I'm just so good at holding on to the past and you were part of such an interesting part of my life. Its hard to separate you from it all. I'm waiting for the hurting to stop. It's a lot easier to be angry.

It is a feeling of being trapped - trapped in a body, in a society, in a world where I don’t belong. Everything feels alien to me. I feel like my soul is struggling inside my body, to escape. It feels so uncomfortable that it manifests in the form of bodily pains.

I have been suicidal for as long as I can remember. I would never act on it mostly, but instead have this constant urge to not live. When I was a child, almost 8 or 9 years of age, I used to sad all the time. My father’s death had caused irreparable damage to my heart. I was never very expressive. So all adults thought I was too young to process all that was going on. Truth is, I was aware and conscious of every pain, every void that that death left. Added to that, my mother’s only brother’s death made all the pain and suffering all too real. Resulting in me constantly wishing death upon myself. I remember I would discreetly scratch on walls writing “I want to die” or scribble in this diary I had “Kill Me!”. I had dedicated pages for Baba and Sonu Mama’s birthday & death anniversaries - I would scribble how I wish I was with them and not on Earth - I was only 8 or 9 years. Teachers would ask “Arushi is always so gloomy, you are always so sad. What happened?” How about someone took the time to talk to me then? I don’t blame my mother because she was going through inexplainable pain too. But I do hold this society responsible which does find some pleasure in sob stories and loves to give their sympathies - oh, only from a distance.

Fast forward to 1or 2 years later, I had to readjust myself in a new family. Learn to live with their rules and regulations. It was a hard time. I had this constant feeling of not belonging - to either of the families. Old and new. I still do. I feel like I never belonged to my older family after we moved on to a new one and never accepted in the new one. It was like I had to prove my worth - prove that I was worth being accepted and loved by this new family. This triggered low confidence and again, suicidal thoughts to the extent when I was 14 or 15 years of age, I tried to eat baygon (ratkill). I was obviously not that courageous to go through with it so I consumed only some of it. No one knew. Actually, 2-3 of my friends knew. It later went on to be a joke. Not kidding.

Teenage is hard and after 2 years when I was in grade 12, I tried to strangulate myself with a loofa in the bathroom at night. Had I held on for a couple of seconds more, I wouldn’t be writing this today at all and maybe, saved myself from a lot of pain. A lot. Over the years, the pain has only increased, not gotten any better.

I went on to go to college. That was a good experience all in all. My thoughts were better. I started drinking alcohol which would lead to emotional outbursts and majorly mourning the death of my father - which I never had the opportunity to do when I was young. I was expected to be strong - strong for my mother. I also developed a little sleep problem for a year where I could not get sound sleep at all. I would keep waking up. I would never wake up fresh. I never thought of killing myself during college which was great. I did however, have this constant thought in my head - Baba is calling me to him. He wants me with him and I should go. Funny, now that I am writing I realize that I haven’t known him for as long as I have lost him - why do I feel so deeply then? Guess, something to explore.

I moved to Mumbai after college. That was a great time for my mental health - I felt my work was valued and I just felt alive. I moved to Canada shortly thereafter. Adjustment was a problem but because it was my choice. I did see a counsellor briefly but the best advice he could give me was - have you tried having a boyfriend. Cool! Anyway, I started keeping myself extremely busy so that thoughts of loneliness wouldn’t cross my mind. Later, I transformed keeping busy with excessive partying and drinking. It was temporary happiness and a means for me to keep myself from falling into the dark hole again. Because frankly, I did not feel and still don’t that any of my friends will understand the emotional baggage I have or will understand the depth of the trauma. I don’t want to end up trivializing my mental state because that would do me more damage.

My mental health was a rollercoaster with mostly good days as I kept myself very busy with work. It all started to crumble slowly last year as I hit the lowest low. I would picture myself blowing my brains out and how good it would feel to not be in this world anymore. I did not feel like talking or meeting anyone. I tried to be vocal about it too. I told some of my friends and family discreetly that I don’t think I am doing to well - I tried to be discreet about my real thoughts because I did not have the courage to tell them. I took therapy and unpacked a lot of those emotions. They helped temporarily but I felt even the therapist did not view it as big a problem as I do.

This year with the pandemic and lockdown, my mental health has been the worse. I have had lots of instances of thoughts of self harm & suicide. I find it hard to be productive. I hang out with friends and laugh - but I don’t feel anything inside. It feels like a drill. It does not feel natural. I let my family know that I don’t feel good these days but again, I did not go in depth because I am scared to hurt them and I also feel, they don’t understand.

With Sushant Singh’s suicide, I have felt especially triggered for multiple reasons - It reminded me of my suicidal thoughts, it rekindled my trauma of untimely deaths and it made me realize that most people cannot understand the pain you are going through.

A week or so before this news, a friend had caught me writing something suicidal - about how I feel like killing myself every minute of the day and shared it with another friend. It kind of ended up being a joke of how I will hang myself one day or that they’ll share it with my mother. I felt trivialized and reinforced the idea that none of them understand the years of pain and trauma inside me. Last year, I explicitly told 2 friends about how I have been feeling as well as my mother. Nobody took it serious so I felt like it wasn’t worth sharing. When I was young, I told my friends about the Baygon and Loofa, they ended up being jokes too. It took me immense vulnerability and courage to open up in the first place. But when each instance ended up being a joke, I don’t think I canbe vulnerable again - hence ended up writing here. Last night I had another of those episodes of just escaping this bodily world. The only thing that makes me weak is thinking about my parents, grandparents and sisters. They can’t take another loss of life - maybe my sisters can but not my parents and grandparents. Other than that, I dont think it would matter to anyone and this is not something I hold against them. I generally have been feeling like a major failure these days - I haven’t really achieved anything - career, friends, partner, socially. Maybe tomorrow will be better or not. I hope I will always find a reason not to take my life in my family as I always have. They have definitely been a trigger and most definitely been the ones who have pulled me out of it. I don’t know maybe this is the lowest of my lows and things will look up after this. Or maybe they just spiral out of control from here. I don’t know.

Maybe I will have the courage to show this to someone someday and seek help. I hope I do. But for now, I don’t think I have the emotional bandwidth to be vulnerable and be made a joke out of. I hope my soul learns to find peace here. Wishing this hope remains.
