Have you got any tips for Tactics Ogre first timers before next week? The story is my main interest if that makes a difference.

I'll try to give you a few tips I can think of, if anyone else has a personal tip to share, it'd be welcome!

I'll keep them spoilers-free, just in case (at the exception of the readmore details for the tip 2).

1. If you’re going in somewhat blind and not following a guide for story and recruitment (which was my experience and I don’t regret it at all), I’d recommend checking the Warren report for talks and rumours every now and then after story steps. Certain entries are worded to give hints about potential sidequests that may lead to recruiting characters.

2. On the topic of recruiting characters... There are few story recruitable characters you will fight before you can eventually recruit them. You can kill them. If you’re hoping to recruit them, try get them to critical health so they flee the battle instead. I’ll name a few under read-more!

3. In general, if you’re interested in the story and characters, I’d recommend not killing certain enemy units too fast. There are a lot of dialogues that get triggered depending on their health percentage! They also vary depending on who you bring to battle so I recommend bringing characters who know the boss (or are likely to know them). The dialogues during battles are incredible, both in quality and quantity.

4. No matter what your choices are, you can go back to certain story steps after finishing the game once, to explore different route or complete quests you missed so I wouldn’t stress over missing anything on a first playthrough, you can just hop around to revisit these segments! 

5. In terms of gameplay, archers used to be completely busted and a good crutch to rely in BUT they’re apparently rebalancing all the classes so it’s possible they’re not going to be as dependable. I’d still try them to make things easier though.

6. Absolutely rely on the Chariot system during battle if you’re struggling. You’ll be able to rewind and change certain actions to re-work your strategy. Tactics Ogre’s maps are fairly sizeable and the battles can get long so this is a good featre to avoid restarting entirely.

7. For rescue missions (there are a few of them in TO), having fast units to heal/throw items and protect the unit can be a great help to reach them easily and keep them from dying.

From what I’ve seen and read, the gameplay has undergone a lot of changes which I can’t give advices on until I experience them, but my understanding of these changes lead me to believe the game will be harder than its PSP counterpart (but probably not quite as hard as the original SFC release). There seems to be alot of Quality of Life additions too that will make it faster to go through menus, equip and level skills though!

8. This one is a bit petty but I've seen many people share this feeling: I'd recommend switching to Japanese voice-acting from the start or turning it off entirely (unless there is a nostalgia for early video game and anime English dubs' quality)

When discussing or analyzing Dazai, one thing I hope you will keep in mind when reading anything I write about him is that from my perspective, he is always, always both.

What do I mean by this? Well, I find there tends to be a general split among people who hold the opinion that "he's a manipulator and will always be manipulative" and "he's doing his best to be good and helpful and live up to Oda's last wishes for him", of which, neither is completely right - because he is both. But even among the people who hold to this dual-nature interpretation, I find that his individual actions and motivations still tend to be thought of in a dichotomous manner - is it manipulative, or genuine?

Again, I think it's always both.

Dazai has a very pragmatic view on a lot of things - he is always looking for the usefulness of things and people so that the situation turns out in his favour. He's incredibly adept at this, and his prediction and placement and careful reveals are all manipulation tactics to get his allies and enemies doing exactly what he needs them to. I don't think anyone can contest this since we see it over and over in the series.

But that's not all there is to it. He's not solely manipulative and he does, to some extent, sympathize with others - I think there are several instances of this in the series, but I want to stress that this has been apparent since Chapter 1!

For context, Dazai is recalling what Atsushi said to him a few minutes earlier, but it's very interesting that it should be this specific part of the conversation. He could've flashed back to the part where Atsushi said he had nowhere to go; no money, no food - he is about to trick him into joining, after all, and this is the key piece he uses to basically force Atsushi into the Agency. But instead it's Atsushi's self-deprecation that catches his attention, and it really does, because even during the conversation, he turns to look at him after he says this with an odd expression.

You could say that this makes Atsushi easier to manipulate, if that's your angle, but that can't be solely it, because in the later conversation with Hirotsu, we know Dazai was planning to bring Atsushi into the Agency and set him up as one half of the new Double Black the moment he met him. The panel shown there is the riverbank, set much earlier in the day than this scene. He was already planning to pair him with Akutagawa since he figured out he was the tiger, so what's with this reaction?

Well. Sometimes the simplest explanation is the best.

He manipulated Atsushi into joining with the intention of utilizing him in his future plans. He also helped him and gave him a place to belong, and importantly, he likes this kid! It's both.

I think much of it might be that his brain just kinda works way too fast - he's such a natural at crafting these elaborate plots and seeing how things connect and gathering useful people like resources that it's practically automatic - though this is not a great means when you're trying to be a kinder person. There's an omake, I believe, that has him saying "I like using my head for justice", i.e. using these underhanded means to act for the better. Not great, but those are the kind of gifts he has. He's way more suited to exploitation, but is choosing to use these tactics to save people now, which is quite reminiscent of what he tells Kyouka. Kyouka's talents lie in killing people - when what you're good at isn't who you want to be, what do you do? Well, I expect you use what you have, even if it's not ideal.

Now, about the current situation with Sigma - I think he definitely likes him, and is intrigued by him and his situation. We did get a little thought bubble where the guy amusedly compares him to Atsushi, and you can't tell me he doesn't care about Atsushi (listen to the onsen drama cd, or read 55 Minutes if you somehow don't believe me). But also, it's undeniable that Sigma is in a very vulnerable position of being homeless and having had no one be genuinely kind to him before. His trust is very easy to earn, and with the latest chapter, Dazai has now saved his life multiple times. There is, as always, a practical purpose he needs him for. And I have to be somewhat amused because Dazai is quite literally telling Sigma everything he ever wanted and needed to hear. It's a brilliant means of quickly endearing himself to Sigma - but I don't think that's all it is.

Look. The most honest moments we get in this series from Dazai are, interestingly for an expert manipulator, when people are at their most vulnerable. In spite of every pointlessly cruel act he inflicted on Akutagawa, his first meeting with him was open and transparent; much like the orphanage director, it seems he thought this treatment would make him strong and adaptable (he's wrong but that's not the point of this). He cuts Kyouka off in irritation and says "don't give me that" when she implies that she would fail the entrance exam. He tells Atsushi it's normal to cry after losing a father figure and to feel however you feel, even if that person caused you nothing but incredible pain and cannot be forgiven. He refuses to entertain Sigma's assumptions that Dazai sees himself as a superior being to him.

Selective honesty can also be utilized to great effect; Mori does this, and undoubtedly it serves this purpose for Dazai too. But I want to stress that I do sincerely believe this is all still honesty from him. Manipulation, or genuine?

Both. It's both.

Time to think about how alone the pale king was when he died. He had lost everything. His kingdom yes, but even his closest relationships.

His trusted friends, who became dreamers, gave up their lives and all for a hopeless cause. His wife was driven away by her guilt and her grief. His child who he had learned to love, he sacrificed for nothing.

Almost every character that we know of who had a personal relationship with PK had either been sacrificed or had left him.

And of course all of it was his own doing. (At least largely his own doing.)

Sure! Artfight is an online art-trading event that happens for the entire month of July, on artfight.net— every year, two “themes” are revealed, and participating artists will pick one of them to be on that “team.” You can upload reference pictures and explanations of your ocs to your profile page on artfight, and throughout the month, artists can draw other users’ characters and send them as “attacks,” ideally drawing characters from artists on the opposite team to earn points for their own team (though many artists (including myself) will just join/participate to draw their friends’ ocs and characters they think would be fun to draw, regardless of the teams)!

If you’re trying to figure out how to send an attack, you should be able to find the “Attacks” option on the drop down on the top right of the artfight home page (under the ‘Manage’ section, not ‘Messages’), and on that page you should be able to select “Submit New Attack!” from there, you’ll fill out anything you want to say about the attack, upload your images (as well as a 200x200 pixel thumbnail)l what “level” of drawing it is (how much you colored it, if you shaded it, if there’s a background, etc), and the website will calculate how many points you’ve earned for your team based on all of those categories and wether or not the artist you’re attacking is on your team or not!

Unfortunately, there’s only a few more days left in this year’s artfight, so you won’t be able to earn points for your team after August 3rd, but nothing can stop you from drawing others’ OCs for fun and posting them here after the event! Or you can always wait for next years fight if you want to take part in the team fight itself! But that being said you can join at any time even if it’s just for one week or one day or whatever!

i have decided to be the change i wanna see, so lets do a nice little thing for each other, as a community full of incredible and talented writers. yes this is writer specific only, but thats cause thats where the main problem of people not interacting with creative works lies in this fandom as far as i can tell and have seen people talking about it especially in the last couple of months

and just in general.. leave people comments. leave them asks about their projects. just go over and gush about their work. i know it sounds embarrassing but writers love nothing more than to hear that someone likes what they are doing. if you find a fic that hasnt been updated in forever, comment on it. it might just be the spark the author needs to continue. while kudos and likes are nice, and just as valuable to some, its definitely in the words the people leave for them that matter the most. im not saying this to put pressure on anyone, its just how it is, and i feel like unless people are writers themselves, and even then sometimes, thats just hard to grasp, especially if the writer is a smaller and less popular one who doesnt get a lot of traffic in the first place

i think thats all. just be nice and considered to everyone, reblog peoples works, this post with others add ons and so forth. and if i find anyone talking shit here or at other writers for something they share, you'll be blocked and im probably taking your kneecaps. be fucking nice. we are all struggling here and we need to stick together

next month me and my grandma are going to visit my godfather who lives in Spain, but instead of being excited (it's gonna be my second time abroad in my life) I'm anxious af, because even though I'm an adult I live with my parents and I need to tell my father about it. normal parents would - y'know - be happy that their children have opportunity to visit another country, but instead he's gonna be insufferable about it, because it's my mom's side of family and he despises my uncle. but what is he gonna do? kick me out of the house even though he promised that as long as I'm studying or working I don't need to worry about such thing, humiliate me as usual, tell me that I'm childish and spoiled or make my mom's life a living hell again? I'm aware of the fact that the longer I'm putting it off the worse his reaction is gonna be, but I'm just not mentally able to tell him that, because I don't know how he will react. I don't need any money from him, I don't have to use my phone during this trip (I dunno how the roaming and stuff work), I just want to be sure he's gonna behave like a proper human being towards my mom and my siblings when I won't be at home and not act like a total asshole while talking with me about it.
