It's been rolling around in my brain the last few days for some reason, but I still hate the family backstory reveals for Sophie and Eliot. I've seen some of the meta for it, but quite frankly, it still makes no sense. If it had been something actually thought of and intentional in the original, I think it could have been so fascinating. I mean, Sophie's willing abandonment of Astrid to contrast with Nate's loss of Sam or Eliot's adoption in contrast with Hardison's and Parker's? Could have been excellent! But they came out of nowhere in Redemption and don't work with these characters.
Sophie was still actively using the fucking alias that she met Astrid under! She met with someone from her past on the show! Like. Quite frankly, that one is unequivocally bullshit that they made up and threw in and pretended could fit with the established canon. (And I'm sorry, but the idea of Sophie abandoning Astrid and never telling Nate about her just... So much of Nate's trauma was rooted in the loss of Sam, and I think that introducing this element after he's gone and unable to respond to it taints Sophie and Nate's relationship in a way bc I'm not exactly sure how Nate would've responded to learning about this but I think that it's something he'd have needed to know. I don't know how to fully express my thoughts on that but yeah.)
As for Eliot, I don't like the adoption aspect literally at all. The way that he would interact with his family and the memory of his family would be different, and I think that it's flat out ridiculous to think that he'd have never mentioned it to the team in the original show, especially when dealing with the kid cases. (I also dislike the biracial adoption as its own element because if Eliot was actually raised by Black parents in the... idk what 80s/90s? That just. doesn't feel congruent with how they write Eliot interacting with PoC, not necessarily in a bad way, but babe, he's written like a white southern man raised in a specific kind of culture that does not jell with that. It also makes Eliot look... really bad that he was apparently raised with the knowledge of how fucked up the military was and his parents' history and made the choices that he did.) Like the show may not have explicitly stated it but the implication of that relationship was vastly fucking different throughout the original show.
Just. These were not backstories that were congruent with their depiction and characters in the original show, and they're also just moves that I don't particularly like or find interesting directions for those characters. There's also something to be said about how it was apparently unacceptable for a woman to not have kids or someone not reconciling with their biological family when that was something that the original show handled a lot better. Out of all the directions to take Sophie and Eliot's stories, that's just not really one that I think was a good idea.

Hi. I got theories about Heathcliff. So, based on both context from Wuthering Heights and from his dialogue, I think Heathcliff was born in the outskirts, then brought into a foster home in a Nest.
We already know this is a thing that happens based on Wonderlab, as seen in one of Rose's flashbacks.
[I don't think Heathcliff is this specific kid from Wonderlab, but I do think he's from a similar predicament.]
And essentially, he was a PR baby, adopted to fluff up some rich family's image without ever truly being a part of it.
From his dialogue, he puts a lot of distance between himself and the Earnshaws. Even in the Who Should Dance scene, he says he "Stepped on a lot of feet at balls" Phrasing here implying he felt like he was more of a bother than a guest, even with the joking tone he's asserting himself as not part of this world of wealth and status.
This is true of the book too, but I assume it's going to have a lot of significance when it comes to Heathcliff's inferiority complex, the Earnshaws didn't even give him their last name.

In the new chapter at the end it is revealed Nana didn't die from AFO nuking her, but he was holding her by the throat in her finals moments. So this adds to the AFO got all the OFA users body in his fridge. Like you open AFO's fridge and you see Yoichi's body carefully laid out and tucked gently in the back wrapped with some blankets and fake flowers and then you look at the bottom of the fridge and all the other OFA users are just messily shoved in there.
Hold on I gotta put this on my scale and weigh it against other retcons to determine if it's "weird and kinda pointless but not directly contradictory to established canon" or "stupid retcon done to uh make someone with an established history character flaw not have it (ie., change the fact that it was more fun when AfO was just lying about all the hands when we knew he couldn't have Nana's due to her being nuked) for uhh no reason" or something in between

rewatching cobra kai for the 100th time - have we ever talked about the iron eagle scene? yeah it's funny when the larusso auto ad cuts in and everything, but have we talked about the specific scene that's playing? after a horrible last 24 hours?
“a bunch of things must have gone wrong if you’re listening to this. whatever happened, i know you must be real scared.” johnny - drunk - sits up, focuses a little harder. “right now, you’re probably filled with all the doubts in the world. but i’m gonna tell you something: God doesn’t give people things he doesn’t want ‘em to use.” johnny flashes back to leading his cobras in warmups. “...and he gave you…the touch.” he flashes back to hitting daniel’s bad leg in the tournament. “it’s a power you have inside of you-” he starts borderline crying. flashes back to the incident at the mini mart. “down there where you keep your guts, boy.” to miguel’s face as johnny’s defending him. “it’s all you need to blast your way in and get back what they took from you.”
you can see the hurt and the exhaustion in his whole face. idk that whole moment is just so special to me. he's playing his favorite movie that he's probably seen 1,000,000 times, and it's like he's hearing those words in a new way (before daniel cuts in). a bunch of things have gone wrong. he probably is scared, underneath it all. is this all his life will ever be? God doesn't give people things he doesn't want them to use. he's good at karate, it's all he's ever really known. he should use it. he's also got heart - he should use it. he knows it's somewhere inside him, buried so far down it's unrecognizable now. down where he keeps his guts. guys i-

Oh Gerard doesn't like the show?? I don't watch it so idk anything
he hasn't outright said he doesn't like it because he's not a dick and i'm sure he respects the team who work on it but like...okay i'm not gonna go and source all of this because it's stuff he's just kind of hinted at over a couple of years in various places but basically there was meant to be an umbrella academy movie in, like, 2012 or something that was going to be a pretty direct adaptation of the comics but it got canned. there definitely used to be a script floating around somewhere because i remember reading it a few years ago but i'm not sure how official/final it was. anyway it got canned because of the usual legal difficulties but also apparently gerard got a bit controlling about his artistic vision and wasn't happy with where it was going and shit.
anyway fast-forward to...2017 or 18 or whenever it was when they were first making the show and gerard was still relatively on board (he didn't have any input into the scripts themselves, but he had a hand in casting and discussed each of the character's arcs with steve blackman the showrunner, visited set a few times, that kind of thing. he made some comments in interviews that he'd matured a lot over the years and was now better at giving up creative control of things and listening to advice from the other people - he specifically mentioned being glad there was more racial diversity in the show because that's something he (very rightfully) regrets about the original comics. anyway he was involved a bit in the press for that first season before it aired and was pretty positive about it, and the first season is definitely the one that's most faithful to the comics (though tonally and thematically speaking it's a pretty loose adaptation). this got....looser as the show went.
like i said, gerard hasn't said anything actively negative about the show, but more recently he has kind of edged around praising it, stopped advertising it on social media even before he left instagram etc etc. He got asked what he thought about the music in the netflix show in an interview relatively recently and he gave a very roundabout careful answer (that's pretty representative of how he's recently spoken about the show in generally) that was basically "it's not.....what i would have chosen.........but i've gotten better at letting that kind of thing go." and then went on a spiel about how he considers the comics and the netflix show two entirely separate entities that have no bearing on each other. he's said multiple things like this clearly distancing himself from the show, and been quick to correct people when they assume he has a hand in writing it.
i'm sure he doesn't hate it! and i could well be projecting some of my own issues with the show onto gerard, but i will say the show like...at best extremely waters down, and at worst actively misinterprets the themes and aesthetics of the comics. and what does gerard care about if not themes and aesthetics you know? i'm not saying the show's terrible, i can see why people like it! and on the other hand i can see why some people wouldn't vibe with the comics! each of them have their own issues. but i personally did really love the comics before going into the show (they're actually how i got into mcr LOL), so i was disappointed by how a lot of things were handled - for example how much of its emotional resonance was kind of overlooked in favour of quirky jokes etc etc. a lot of that is to be expected just by virtue of netflix hosting it - the comics are way too dark to effectively translate to that platform, for starters. but anyway one of my biggest pet peeves is people calling gerard a "writer of netflix's umbrella academy" because i can guarantee you one thing, that show is not a gerard way creation, for better or worse.

Nothing like someone @ ing everyone in a server you've muted saying "this is super important and must be spread, this 22 year old woman by the name of [full legal name] is harassing me and my friends", refusing to explain fully what is going on, and when you react with a question mark they dm you to harass you into just sharing without thinking.
They say "Don't read [site], only the stuff I link, and then spread it like wild fire", and when you say "this sounds like fandom beef and very one sided, i will not do that" and block them they google your username and comment on every video on your youtube channel about how you're an awful human being.
Like yeah that will make me trust you more.

🔥 BJ Hunnicutt
My opinion on BJ Hunnicutt is whatever one of my mutuals last posted about him. My opinion on BJ Hunnicutt is whatever will get me notes. My opinion on BJ Hunnicutt is whatever Mike Farrell said in whatever his latest interview is because that man has so much love for this show and this character and his longstanding support of the queer community means so much to me and I like to think it meant a lot to Mr. Stiers too if it’s not too parasocial to say so and his interaction with MASH fans even decades later is so kind and sweet and the way he played his character even when the writers admitted he didn’t have enough to work with textually still has such an impact on so many viewers and I think that’s really powerful especially when you think about how it’s contributed to the recent boom in the general MASH fandom economy which no matter what I absolutely consider a net positive to the legacy of the show and to the world in general and even just to me personally given the way that being a part of this small community has changed my own life.
But mostly my opinion on BJ Hunnicutt is just. Whatever.
