I do have an idea of Alastor taking Vox pet shopping, because Vox mentioned having a dog when he was alive and missing having a companion

Alastor agrees to get him a pet, as long as it ISN'T a dog

Vox cannot believe THIS is the one line Alastor won't cross, not even using his most adorable digital face changed his mind - but Vox still wants a pet, so he agrees. No dogs.

(They haven't been together long enough for Vox to LEARN why no dogs was such a big deal, here - I kind of think that's something Alastor doesn’t talk about until they've been together for like 10-20 years).

So! They go to a pet store, and Vox immediately wants the giant dog-like shark.

(Alastor tries to say no, but Vox is like "C'mon it's not a dog!!! *insert cute anime eyes before that was even a concept* so Alastor relents).

And the poor shop employee is like, trying to figure out how to tell the fucking Radio Demon and the guy who's starting to take over all the media that they probably don't have the ability to care for the shark-dog thing. (Think, stressed PetSmart employee trying to go "No, a baby bunny isn't a good gift for Easter" except to a serial killer actively covered in blood, here. That's the visual I'm thinking of).

[side note: why do I punish poor minimum wage employees constantly, I promise I have also worked a minimum wage job working for the general public, lol]

But when the employee explains that the shark-dog thing needs a large body of water (probably ocean) to swim in often, Alastor is just like "Oh I can summon that, easily. I'll add it to the guest bedroom since Vox no longer uses it." And Vox is like, what do you MEAN that's something you can do?? You can't just drop casual lore like that at the pet store!

Alastor is like "?? Darling, what do you mean? I have a bayou in my room in the closet? A little beach isn't any more difficult."

And it turns out that when Vox moved in, Alastor told him not to go in that closet. Alastor meant it in a "don't go in there without me, because wandering in a bayou could be dangerous if you don't know where you are/how to do so safely" kind of way.

Vox, however, took it in a Bluebeard kind of way and was like, "Easy, I'm not having him murder me, so he'll be stuck with me forever. Win/win scenario, I solved the fairytale" and just assumed he DID because they're dating now.

And Alastor is left staring with the most confused smile on his face, trying to come to terms with the fact that Vox just casually accepted that he was living in a Bluebeard-like scenario, and his response was to play by the rules so he can stay with Alastor.

(They get the shark-dog. Vox names it Vark. Alastor immediately takes away his "allowed to name new things" privilege, but it's too late. It only responds to Vark).

I think this chapter is sooo funny bc once again they’re having the same feeling!!! (Wanting to continue this pseudo dating thing) but they’re approaching it in different ways!!! Hirano feels the need to communicate to Kagiura about it bc they’ve suffered from so much miscommunication in the past, and Kagiura knows that after that whole convo about “moving on”, hiranos going to talk to him about it bc he doesn’t want to hurt/prolong this hurt, and he’s right! But his conclusion is wrong, I think it’s at this point where Kagiura realizes he’s making assumptions! And assuming that he’ll always be rejected that every bit of progress made will have to be made with sweat, blood, and tears is already selling himself short! It’s why at the end of the chapter we see Kagiura acting like he did in the beginning, like what he’s experiencing is too good to be true and he has to talk to someone about it who can level with him about how he’s supposed to interpret it, “how much hope can I have?” Or something, also I love the fact that this conflict doesn’t just ride on Hirano not experiencing romantic feelings but also Kagiura not being completely truthful about what he’s feeling, I think it was mentioned in the hide n seek chapter about this and something about Kagiura wanting Hirano to find out for himself which is so funny considering Kagiuras feelings only reached the point of no return bc of niibashi’s help 😭 idk these situations are always interesting bc Hirano points out contradictions in kagiuras behavior and Kagiura slowly leaves breadcrumbs as to what it means, so that way Kagiura will have his feelings understood not in an intellectual sense but bc he feels the same thing! Anyway KagiHira 5ever I hope they never stop being insane

ITS SO SO FUNNYYYY!!!! hahahahhaah. but god youre so right. they want the same damn thing all the time but they keep going about it in different ways or keep misunderstanding each other. like Yeah they were both thinking about the whole moving on thing... but kagiura completely misunderstood hirano. because he will always think its too good to be true. hes bringing up the moving on thing because hes going to reject me. its on some level a kind of self-loathing that ive been really really normal about lately. even though theyre trying the trial pseudo dating thing he doesnt 100% believe that hirano is actually trying. he thinks he has to keep begging hirano to look at him but little does he know hiranos never taken his eyes off him.

and so they both approach this Moving On conversation with selfishness. kagi selfishly begs hirano to keep trying. and he knows hes selfish and so full of desire and he kind of hates himself for it. but hirano also comes in selfishly--i dont want you to move on yet. let me keep trying. i want to understand you so desperately. and then yeah it kind of lightens up as kagi realizes what the fuck he just said and he has to be thinking about that How much hope am i allowed to have. and thank god he has niibashi to talk to about it UNLIKE HIRANO TAIGA. TALK TO SOMEONE YOU BITCH. SOMEONE WHOS NOT MIYANO. BECAUSE MIYANO IS INSANE. sorry. like you said kagi only realized the depth of his feelings after talking to niibashi. before that he was perfectly content with their relationship. hirano just really really needs to talk to somebody. even in a roundabout way. and i do hope its sasaki. sigh. anyways. also the thing about kagi hiding his feelings Yeah 1000%. and hirano pointing out the contradictions. aaauuuuhhggggg kagihira 6ever peace and love on planet kagihira

this is a newer fic and its still in progress atm and so theres a chance it gets bumped into NSFW territory 😅 but im really enjoying it!!! The dynamic between Amanda and Angela takes the competitive edge we can see in videos and makes it into something phenomenal. Its got such strong tension and pacing, and its also got. REALLY GOOD COMMUNICATION. People react realistically and have reasonable fears and doubts but everyone also talks about them and trusts each other and its just so satisfying to read as a result. And it STILL does the tension and the 👀👀👀👀👀 so well. Guess its kind of funny to put this and the prior recc right next to each other but I genuinely love both of these. Communication and humans are weird.

gah this one has so many layers and elements to it, its such a damn delight to reread. the bittersweetness of it all really 👌👌👌👌. Grudging respect and admiration in an awful space, magnetism of people who both deeply want to love each other and really don't (but they do). The world feels very realized and that's so important bc the fic clearly sets up the interplay as like. The two of them and also the world they are in as a distinct three players in the story. This fic has so many emotions!!! gut punch of an end! you feel for both of them so deeply by the end.

slight cheating bc this is courtmangela but it should still count imo!!! It contains another classic trope of people who care about each other deeply and it being percieved by other people before they clock it themselves. Its something I like specifically as a writing trope and only executed in specific ways- caring deeply and being affectionate does not HAVE to mean you want to sleep with or are in love with someone, and IRL assumptions about that can be. Infuriating. But love how this fic does it. :) Also its funny and it feels very genuine and the voices all sound. right. I love fics with lots of cuts where so much is said in tiny details and tiny moments, it makes the world feel very fleshed out. Also, Courtmangela as a band is just a blessed concept.

bonus: its the subject of this ask so i didnt include it but shout out to an angel in neon blue- the tension is INCREDIBLE and the way the ending recontextualizes everything and leaves you unsure who was really in control the whole time is like. really impressive. cersei absolutely, i feel like she'd maybe mockingly flirt with brie at first, maybe some jabs along the ways of like wow you are so big and strong, good things you're a knight then and she means it like, lol fail at being feminine/woman over here and brie's like yes i am big and strong and good at being a knight...and it accidentally endears cersei to her a bit LOL (love u brie but this miscommunication is too funny)

and then cersei privately later is kind of like oh wait hang on she is kinda ..... i bet she could pick me up with those big warm calloused hands of hers..........were her eyes always that blue, why is it appealing when her face bursts out into a splotchy red when im mean to her.

for brie i have the idea that she's kingsguard in some capacity and being the only woman in the guard, shes assigned to cersei a lot of the time since even tho shes "doing woman wrong" according to GOT society it does maybe give cersei slightly peace of mind in typically women majority spaces of her daily life like dressing/bathing/ladies in waiting type situations. the theater of gender of it all in got.

bries got pride in being kings(/queens, depending on where in the story this takes place)guard but obviously cersei is mostly doing bad shit however brie swore and oath and oaths are evrything to her so its just soooo tasty. also she thinks cersei is attractive and cersei keeps paying attention to her and sometimes she comments on how good bries is at things that come naturally to her, so brie's just got this horribly messy crush on her and wears her emotions on her sleeve and is very bad at not showing what shes thinking. (also sometimes maybe she thinks it was hot when cersei did tease her but that can't be right)

and eventually cersei realises brie is unbelievably hot and has a crush on her so she kind of shrugs and knows that brie would literally never tell a soul that they slept together so she kisses her when brie is following her back to her bedchamber one night, steps in real close to that gold armor and has to tiptoe (embarrassing) to kiss brie who is unable to move ot process what is happening. cersei pulls back to watch her face which is just staring at her and brie clumsily leans down to kiss her again, the fingers of one hand just brushing her shoulder like she wants to pull her closer but doesnt have anything to kiss with but her instincts. and cersei smiles bc she knew she was right so she lightly nips at brie's bottom lip, pulls back, smiles and closes the door on her.

and then she keeps kissing brie like this for weeks and not even talking to her about it (cersei loves to watch her get flustered at points during the day and ALMOST bring it up but brie never can) i think she realises this is gonna be the most fun teasing brie in a slowburn then just sleeping with her once.

Oh gosh☺️ making me feel like a fic rec authority. Making my day. Okay! Longer canon-verse with maybe an emphasis on the good-good son Mike Wheeler. (Fair warning, almost all the Mike fics I read are byler centric lol) Many of these fic authors have written multiple wonderful ST fics🥰

One of the first ST fics I ever bookmarked was A Hope to Cling To by midnighteverlark which is slightly canon divergent for the Shed Scene in season two. It’s a fic I return to often because it’s just a very lovely fic. It switches between Mike and Will POV and has five chapters.

@wiseatom just wrote a fic called just gotta call on me, which is a 5+1 fic about phone calls between Mike and Will. It is Very wonderful and takes place from post S2 to post series.

If you feel like crying @andiwriteordie wrote a lovely birthdaygate series called how light carries on endlessly where everyone forgets Will. Very lovely read but Ow it’s got me crying in the club. Post S4 and still ongoing.

Us against the world by wasabi8000, immediately post-S4, Mike finally puts the pieces together about Will’s feelings. Sweet and a tiny bit angsty with a little bit of miscommunication. A good fic!

First of all i just wanted to say how much youve improved over the course of making this comic!! the lineart is so much Smoother and neater, the shading is so PRETTY, i love how youve done the backgrounds, whether you actually draw them or put flowers or something else behind the characters, and the layout looks so much more proffesional and puts the focus on the right things!! ALSO your anatomy has improved sm and i love all the wild expressions!!

Also i LOVE the teal colouring with pink accents, its such a pretty combo and its kinda like your trademark now!!

And obviously the whole story is so GOOD. i love how you cranked up the Idiot Meter to 1000000 bc YEAH theyre IDIOTS!! I loved the whole Clownbug part with ladybug discovering chats in love with marinette and being ANGRY abt it, its one of my favourite flavours of love square, and pt 6 of the comic was also SO entertaining!! miscommunication my beloved <3

I also love the first panel of pt nine, its just so pretty!! and ofc the shenanigans with the design contest, it feels v realistic and you absolutely NAILED mari's character!!

This comic is such a labor of love for me and I'm always trying to work in a lot of fun and cute little details/moments so when people notice and point out those things it makes my heart SWELL WITH JOY. When I started this my only goals were to scratch my lovesquare itch and get comfortable drawing again after being out of the habit for years. I had, idk maybe ten followers and did not expect anyone to read it or that I would actually manage to draw more than five parts or so AND NOW HERE WE ARE lol. I am so happy that you can see an improvement in the art, not just in how the characters are drawn but stuff like backgrounds and the visual storytelling as well. I hope to get better and better with each part!

Reading your comments about the characterization makes me wanna screech with happiness because I LOVE. THESE. IDIOTS. SO MUCH it is ridiculous!! RIDICULOUS! And as much as I adore leaning into them being incredibly stupid, it is important to me to show how much tenderness lies at the heart of their interactions. They are so, so stupid because they’re so, so sweet. Confessions is very much “journey over destination” because I just want to indulge in as much insanity, humor, awkwardness, confusion, affection, devotion, and partnership I can manage to tease out of their relationship in one story.

The color palette btw was a complete and total happy accident! Sometimes a thing works because you put lots of thought and effort into it, and sometimes a thing works because you fell on it. The color palette is an example of the latter but THE JACKET is an example of the former, haha. The amount of time it took to develop not just the meaning of it but literally the physical design (gotta look like something Marinette might actually make, gotta be something that I can draw a bunch of times, gotta be something that [spoilers redacted], gotta be something that fits over Chat’s shoulders, gotta be something that actually looks good, omg.) I have a whole post about it already but still more to say because I always have more to say! this is so much rambling I’m sorry

One of the big challenges I’ve had in trying to make a comic is figuring out how to balance what to say, what to show, and what to imply. The jacket is first and foremost exactly how Marinette presents it, a means to hopefully reach Adrien and deliver the card from his classmates. The specifics behind the design are more implied. Marinette pours a week of blood sweat and tears into creating this jacket, and as far as Chat Noir sees, she is single-mindedly focused on that task. But we all know she’s ALSO carrying the responsibilities and concerns of being Ladybug. Losing the Miraculous is obviously like... the biggest thing, a terrible and invisible weight that she carries alone!

Except not, because Chat Noir is there. dave and karkat kind of ARE that good, regrettably. i feel like we all go through a davekat phase upon first reading and then gradually we get over dave and karkat and move onto other, better pursuits, like vrisrezi fanfiction or space player meta. rereading tho man they are excellent… not the most compelling characters of COURSE and really more like babys first analysis in terms of dissecting them, but man they are funny, man their emotional arcs are vivid and well written, man they are hilarious together also (penis ouija. yeah that was funny). coming out as a dave and karkat fan once again

okay the way they were somehow both jealous of grayson in this book like 😭😭😭 it was so funny to me like boi ur jealous of a man who has So Much unresolved trauma seek HELP shddhdj im kidding (kind of,, they could all use some therapy tbh) and avery girl ,,, i do feel bad for her a bit cause it can be easy to doubt the strength of a found family bond (specifically her bond w toby) when his blood daughter who looks just like the girl ur boyf and his brother loved shows up (although i would be grateful not to look like a dead girl butttt thats just me)

and the whole escape room deal ,,, like im not the biggest fan of the “im locking u up bc i love u and want to protect u” trope but likeee he locked her in an /escape/ room so his goal was prob just to keep her in there long enough for him grayson and eve to leave ,,, its not like he locked her somewhere where someone had to come find her, she got out on her own. still p shady but i think its ironic that the thing jameson did that caused the most tension between him and avery was trying to act like grayson who avery didn’t want to be with anymore 😭😭 but if he wasn’t insecure there would be less of a romantic tension subplot so it goes ,,,

also i love their tahiti code word we stan couples who actively try to avoid miscommunication ,,, like sure they had their problems in this book but they were both super open abt their shit and i respect that

i just love avery as a character ngl. like there’s that part where she’s solving the old man’s bag puzzle on her own and grayson comes up to her to talk abt eve and he asks what the bag’s abt and she doesn’t tell him bc she wants to tell jameson first. like i don’t think this is explicitly stated in the book but i know my girl is trying so hard not to be like emily and play the boys off of each other even unintentionally and i think thats so cool and sexy of her.

and then the part

“it was always going to be you,”i told jameson. he needed to hear it. i needed to say it, even though always painted over so much.

and THATS why he said “i wish i’d fallen in love with a girl who wasn’t quite so good at bluffing,” bc they BOTH knew she wasn’t being honest when she said that. it didn’t mean avery loved jameson any less, but that wasn’t how she really felt. then later in the hedge maze avery says

“i can’t say it was always going to be you, jameson, because i don’t believe in destiny or fate — i believe in choice.”

and she says to herself “love wasn’t just a choice—it was dozens, hundreds, thousands of choices.” and even through her lingering feelings for grayson, she chose jameson over and over, which is why this scene is where they make up.

A lot of more sensitive topics get pushed to the side bc we don't want to seem like we condone those things even though we find them interesting to explore and write about. It kinda sucks at times. I write my stories the same way though. Like I have a general idea of what I want to happen, but I need to write everything chronologically. When I can't write the next part, the story ends up stuck in the shelf for months... Or sometimes I don't know what to write next so I write multiple routes and then everything gets mixed up lol

You're very diligent with getting into character's heads though! I kinda do the same with my research, but I don't have a written psychoanalysis of them. I mentally compare them with my experiences irl with ppl, etc, and then use that to make assumptions. As for voice, when I'm thinking of making them say something, I try to imagine the VA saying it. If I can't hear it, I change the wording. LOL

I'm looking much forward to Kaveh's release though!!! I want to see what he's like away from Alhaitham. Seeing him in Alhaitham's story quest just made me... sad. But take your time playing it! i think another reason why writing of such themes is not prevalent is because (1) it's mentally draining to write, (2) it's hard to gauge a stranger's threshold for such things, and most importantly (3) people who write fanfiction are just here to see their favourite characters in scenarios they like—for tooth-rooting fluff or gut-destroyer angst.

but, yeah, it sucks that people assume you support such things just because you write them. personal take is that writing is powerful because, if an author plays their cards right, it makes you think. it's a great way to explore the grey areas of life. can be very dangerous if consumed thoughtlessly though.

i scream at miscommunication when the thing that happens as a result of it doesn't do anything to move or develop a character. just. drama. i believe that's what ruined the love triangle trope for many? correct me if i'm wrong, lol. but as much as i find the trope annoying too, i have my own fair share of miscommunication. (at least it gives me character growth, LOL.)

a rating tag will definitely help. marking it as teens and up or mature with cw is already a warning that the fic heavily deals with the themes, but if it was pg i would assume it's just a brief mention. (can't wait to read it... even if i know about the shock factor so it's not shocking anymore, haha)

okay, i have a funny story. when 1d formed as a band, i was eleven years old. my classmates were obsessed with them. so i was like "i won't be like the other girls" and i was showing disinterest every time someone was talking about them (but at the same time i was secretly blasting more than this. the only reason i love that song that much, was because of niall and louis' solos). and i listened to their songs occasionally on the music tv channels (their singles). and for the time the band was still touring and making albums, i just didn't vibe with them, and even think about them. when zayn left the bad, i read it somewhere and that was all. but when the next year mind of mine came out, i fell in love with his voice. so, all in all, i would say zayn. i have been listening to his music for years and i just have really soft spot for him in my heart. 🫐

Redemption Road -misc/600+k. an incredibly long fic from a collaborative writing group back in the day. canon divergent from the end of s6 on, has a cool take on godstiel and the leviathans, as well as the lovecratian mythos connection. ngl when i reread it i only made it about 28% in but imo the casual reader can actually stop around there, the rest concerns a lovecraftian apocalypse that is still good (i think i don’t remember it very well) but not required to enjoy the first half. if you prefer i have an ebook version i can send you on gdrive.

Someone Who's Feeling For Me* - mature/45k, s12. they run into lisa braeden and dean thinks cas is into her while cas thinks dean still likes her. treats lisa way better than the show ever did and the miscommunication is pretty funny rather than annoying.

a turn of the earth - mature/95k. time travel fic where cas from s10 keeps showing up in deans life from a few years before s1 to right before the hellhounds take his soul.  slow burn, good character study, and at one point cas punches the dad in the face and it rules.

On the Wings of War - teen/85k, canon divergent s5. dean accidentally becomes the Horseman of War. plays fun, fast and loose with biblical lore, michael has some rights.

EXTREMELY blasphemous in a fun sexy way. manages to predict metatron almost to a T. there’s one major character death and its literally jesus christ, everyone is very sad about it and it sets the rest of the story rolling. an alternate interpretation of cas’ mission to raise dean from hell which had me on the floor. ngl its kind of misogynistic at points, but its from 2010 and tracks with late oughts-2010 spn (sorry anna the author did you dirty here:/).

The Girlfriend Experience - explicit/15k. uhhh i don’t normally rec or even read smutty stuff unless someone i know is specifically asking for it but this has stuff like sam trying to be a good ally and dean thinking holding hands with cas is ‘kinda gay :/’ minutes after having gay sex with him.

i crippled your heart a hundred times - explicit/19k, s8. cas confesses his feelings and dean spends a long time getting his head out of his ass about it. truly hits different after the actual confession, despite being written six years early it feels like its actually what could have gone down more or less if the writers weren’t talentless demons who hate us.

Down to Agincourt - mature/explicit/900++++k, endverse continuation. endverse!cas survives his encounter with lucifer and discovers another time-displaced dean from s7. i’ve only read the two of four parts but its really good, veeeeery slow burn, has a lot of fun oc’s and takes a rather surprising but (imo) entertaining and intriguing turn into Hellenic history and mythology. usual tw’s for endverse/endverse!cas but nothing graphic, it’s actually pretty light-hearted (relatively speaking of course).

as much as I love show!kanthony and the fact that they chose to get married instead of being forced into marriage which fit their storyline of finally doing something for themselves, i'm still low key sad benedict won't be the first one to marry someone because he wants to. i'm literally just trying to think of all the ways they could make benophie stand on its own bc in some ways show!kanthony took some tropes from them.

Yeah to be honest I much preferred the chaos from The Viscount Who Loved Me where Kanthony are forced to marry to cover a scandal and the chaos that follows as they blatantly love one another but are too consumed with Kate's insecurities of Anthony having to marry her and Anthony's determination not to be in love with his wife. I thrive off of miscommunication and how obvious it was to everyone else but themselves that they did in fact love each other. I understand why the show went down the route that they did because it would be similar to Saphne being forced to marry to cover a scandal, but at least Saphne were more open to actually being in love with one another than Kanthony were in the book by keeping their deepest feelings to themselves.

So while the show did alter Kanthony's romance to a certain extent, I think they'll be incorporating different elements or taking moments from other books to use for future pairings, for example the way they had Simon say "I burn for you" in S1 when this was actually Anthony's line to Kate from his book. I don't know how Kanthony stans felt with Simon taking Anthony's line, because I sure as hell would be incensed if they gave Benophie's adrift/anchor exchange to a different couple. I'm hoping that going ahead into future seasons if Kanthony stick around that we'll see some more moments between them that came from their book - I want them to have a funny storyline of Kate deciding to take up the flute and Anthony teasing her for her abysmal playing until one of his siblings makes a joke of her attempts and Anthony jumps to his wife's defence, admonishing them for judging Kate when she's still new to the instrument, and then we cut to Anthony joining his wife by trying to learn the trumpet, much to his family's astonishment (and slowly deafening ears).

A line from Kanthony's book which didn't get used but I still want to see I think could be used for Benophie. After Kate and Anthony first sleep together he tells her "it's never been so good" - and having just reread An Offer From A Gentleman, Sophie asks Benedict if it's always like that after they make love for the first time. Benedict's too overwhelmed to say anything but shakes his head and I think considering at the end of S2 he confesses to never having been in love that the first time he sleeps with Sophie would make him realise that he has never truly made love to another until her. If he confessed to Sophie that it's never been like this for him then it would speak volumes of just how deeply Sophie has affected his mind, body, and soul. There's a lot of powerful moments as well as smaller moments in Julia Quinn's writing that I would love the show to take better advantage of, but I guess we'll see how they continue going ahead.

Slave Chips + Anakin Angst time

The conversation started w/ a Anakin has chronic pain because of a very Loud force presence + all the fun stuff that comes from a childhood in slavery and formative years spent as a general in a war, and then talking about high vs low pain perception

And then Yui hops in with this:

what if Slave masters have technology in the slave chips where they can control their slaves pain perception--Low perception for when they work and high for when they get punished.

The jedi didn't know about it, Qui-gon forgot to mention the chip to the Council

and Watto " forgot " to turn it the high pain perception off as a way of getting back at the Jedi for “stealing” his investment

Oh my God what if anakin thinks they know and choose not to turn it off

WHAT IF HE THINKS THAT THEY'RE PUNISHING HIM FOR QUI-GON BEING QUI GON AND FOR THEM BEING FORCED TO TAKE HIM IN SO OLD

AND THAT FEEDS HIS BITTERNESS OF THEM

AND ALSO STOMPS HIS SELF ESTEEM

Because the pain NEVER stops.

So Anakin never says anything

It makes him think that he definitely cannot tell them about any injuries he has unless they make him unfit to work

And Obi-Wan constantly lectures him too and like he's already being punished he doesn't need to be verbally beaten down too

(note that it’s from Anakin perspective, the unreliable narrator of the year--Obi-wan actually has no idea about the chip)

And when he lashes out because it just HURTS and he can't contain it anymore, he’s berated AGAIN

Also, if the pain perception is controlled, that means the slave chip is still there, which makes the thought process he has about being punished for being taken so old even worse

And then, what if Kix one day finds a chip in Anakin's nervous system, he removes it, and Anakin begins crying with relief

And Kix goes "Sir Why WAS THIS TORTURE DEVICE IN YOU?"

He gets injured enough for emergency surgery and Kix finds the chip that way, meanwhile, Anakin can't have anesthesia for medical reasons, so he's dealing with the surgery awake and feels the moment the chip is detached.

WHAT IF ANAKIN IS FAKE NONCHALANT ABOUT IT BECAUSE ANGST

"Ah? Oh they didn't tell you? I thought it'd be in the brief. That's my slave chip. It's supposed to be there. It means they own me." And kix...kix is aghast.

the Jedi are all crying in a corner at the fact they let a CHILD be tortured for YEARS

Because Anakin admitted to a slave chip. Of being owned. And he calls obi-wan Master

Obi-Wan is absolutely devastated because he tortured the child who he was responsible for and he never wanted to do that and oh force, he's a monster (it’s obi wan so like. infinite sadness to the max)

The clones basically become Anakin's mother hens

Oh, with the removal of the chip and the pain, Anakin gets high from the huge levels of pain-relieving chemicals his body has been producing for years to compensate.

Anakin living in constant fear of punishments, and that's why he always seems so high strung and on a hair trigger

Like!! This whole thing is a web of miscommunication and assumptions

Anakin assumes that the Jedi and whatever know about the chip and chose to keep it in.

He assumes he is still a slave if not in name, then in status

He assumes the council is constantly punishing him for Qui-Gon essentially forcing them to take him in and for his failure to adhere to their code.

He assumes Obi-Wan feels the same, or perhaps he cannot risk going against the council bc they're his elders and he still loves Obi-Wan, bc he sees that Obi-Wan does care for him

(but not enough to free you, a voice whispers in his head that grows louder every day)

Him talking about things with Palpy, thinking the man would be nice enough to free him...

the entire temple is just full of people drinking and crying over Anakin and Anakin himself is currently the most functional person around, trying to convince everyone it wasn't that bad

He doesn't realize that that makes it so much worse. He's all "Really, compared to my other masters. And to masters I could have gone to... you all were kind. I was lucky."

And they despair.

Because how could they still be given that earnest smile, of beautiful blue eyes, shining still with trust and love, when they tormented him, albeit unknowingly, for over a decade?

Anakin is just very relieved to be pain free, and that they didn't know so it wasn't on purpose.

Anakin: You all treated me so well! I had food and water every day, shelter and good quality clothing. You never beat me and my punishments, while sometimes painful, were done with no tricks without cruelty.

“You’re the best masters I’ve had.”

Mace, upon being told this by a very earnest and 100% honest Anakin, knowing full well how he made life difficult for Anakin and didn't like him much, cleared a whole bar of alcohol on his own

While the Jedi are crying, the 501st is willing to go on a murder spree. The Hutts are DEAD.

Anakin is just happy and relieved.

Yes there will be talking. He will have to establish boundaries, the order will need to regain its footing.

But Anakin is free, and he has so much love to give.

And now he knows that they never meant for him to suffer.

And maybe he's still high on being free of pain, but now he knows they genuinely cared for him and none of their kindness was because they wanted him to perform well. They were genuine.

Obi-Wan at one point just breaking down and holding Anakin to his chest and sobbing because how did he fail him so badly

meanwhile Anakin's just like "Master, it's fine, I'm fine. Hey crying wastes water, if you're going to cry over something it's gotta be something more major than this. I mean everything's fine, everything's better than fine now, I'm free."

Anakin not quite processing why everything he says makes Obi-Wan cry harder.

this fic also has probably my favorite depiction of nicky's relationship with god/religion in any fic ive read ('[nicky's] peace had come only after walking away from faith as a competition of intensity in favor of faith as a steady compass that he followed like the beat of his heart in his chest.'). i love the whole Drama played out by the background characters and how they all have their own ideas and motivations & nicky is just kind of resigned to being caught in the middle of it.

(also love how near the beginning joe's like 'the Right thing to do in the situation would be stay at this river and help these people.... ... ....... ... .... ... anyways see ya guys later gotta go find nicky'.)
