people who think will byers hates himself for being gay when will byers is one of the very few characters on the show that has refused to change himself to fit anyone else's idea of what he should be despite the fact that people, including his own father, have been harassing, bullying, and abusing him for it literally his entire fucking life are just...... so weird.
will's entire POINT is that he will survive and brave whatever you throw his way against all odds and come out on the other side of it still clutching on to his sense of self and hope that tomorrow will be a better day. the entire point of his character is that he loves what he loves without apology or shame.
he sings "that weird song he loves" in the middle of hell because it reminds him of his brother and offers him comfort in a place where there is none. he creates art because he loves it and doesn't care if it isn't something boys do, then he gifts it to his friends because he loves them and wants them to know it, too. he loves dnd and writes campaigns and dresses up for them because they bring him joy and he just wants to spend time with his friends even if they think they're "too cool" for it now.
he knows that sometimes it's harder than it should be to be gay in a homophobic society and has been harassed for that literally his entire fucking life it's LITERALLY how they introduce him to us not even twenty minutes into this fucking show and YET !!!!!!! he doesn't back away from that. ever.
he gets picked on for his clothes, but he doesn't change them. he gets called names, but he doesn't make any attempt to conform. his best friend, the boy that he's in love with and his very first friend ever, tells him it isn't his fault that he doesn't like girls and shamefully asks him if he really thought they were going to play games together in his basement for the rest of their lives and never get girlfriends, and what does will do?
he says yeah. i guess i did. i really did.
will faces all of that and goes to a new place where he has the golden opportunity of a clean slate, and what does he do? when assigned to do a presentation on his hero... he picks alan turing of all people. and when his brother later on tells him that he loves him no matter what, essentially giving him the It's Okay To Be Gay I Love You So Much And Always Will talk, still there is no denial on will's part here either.
will has NEVER, EVER denied being gay. he has NEVER tried to change that part of himself. he has ALWAYS stood tall and braved another day even when it was scary and hard. he has ALWAYS remained true to himself even though that has only ever made his life that much harder.
he said that sometimes he feels like a mistake for being so different from other people, but that being loved and accepted makes him feel like he isn't one at all and like he's better for being different and that gives him the courage to fight on.
literally what the fuck are you guys on about when you talk about will being self-hating for being gay. where is the canonical evidence for that? and more than that, why are you so keen on throwing away all of his acts of bravery and the sheer fucking strength of character that he's had since the very beginning? it would've been so much easier for him to conform, to be the "man" that everyone has always pushed him to be, but he doesn't ever do that. he stays true to himself no matter what. so, again, where the hell are these self-hating receipts?!

is it foolish of me to believe that in the celebrity fake dating au several years in the future once the very first fanfic site is up there is a large uptick in erathia sales and tenar/lark becomes a popular ship
not only is it extremely un-foolish of you, anon, it's also completely on point. like, you have no idea. this is something that has been in my notes since basically the beginning of this fic.
like, i think robin in particular has always been a role model for girls since the erathia films, and it's absolutely my headcanon (actual canon?) that there's a small part of her fan base that's just lesbians exchanging knowing looks with each other and quietly wishing her the best.
i also fully believe there was a tenar/lark fandom basically as soon as the second movie came out. after all, nancy and robin put a lot of thought and effort into making their characters' dynamic something more than the usual 'two women fighting over the male protagonist.' (fun fact this is partially inspired by the making of wicked the musical and how glinda and elphaba could've been typical catty opponents and instead became incredible foils who present the show's great love story). combine that with their natural chemistry, and gay/bi women would easily read their relationship as a potentially romantic one. catch a bunch of women in the late 80s/early 90s passing around fanzines a la early Star Trek fandom or something
anyway i could talk about this forever but i probably shouldn't. instead, here's the actual semi-polished lil write up i made a few weeks back:
Tenar and Lark—Nancy and Robin’s movie characters—actually have a bit of a fandom going on and have since the 80s. The fandom only grows when Robin comes out, and then when she and Nancy go public with their relationship (in fact, there’s a bit of a conspiracy for a while in early 1998—Nancy and Robin aren’t hiding anything, but they’re not confirming anything through interviews, either. So when paparazzi photos start coming out of them holding hands and going out together, most of the public is like ‘oh gals being pals’ but a not insignificant number of Erathia fans know what’s up). Anyway, as Robin and Nancy become more serious, more and more people rewatch the Erathia movies and see their characters in a new light. Suddenly all the work Nancy and Robin put into building their characters and creating a three-dimensional friendship between Tenar and Lark translates into the potential for something deeper. Tenar and Lark become one of the most iconic wlw couples, kind of on par with something like Xena on Gabrielle. In the early 2000s, someone asks Scott Clarke what he thinks of Tenar and Lark, and he just chuckles and says it makes sense and he wishes he saw it way back when.
(there are probably some spin-off books, eventual prequel/sequel series, etc and so on that come out--the erathia films were originally based off of the star wars trilogy, after all. and you bet your ass that in all of those, tenar and lark are completely in love)

would you be open to elaborating on the trilogy that ABM takes place in? What are the other books?
Hm. I've been sitting on this ask for a bit because, to be real with you, I'm really not sure how secretive I want to be. I think I'm just used to being secretive, but I don't necessarily gain anything from it, and I feel bad keeping people in the dark when they really want to know. So, here it is:
Book 1 is about Lucifer's rebellion, Book 2 is about the Flood (and Eden), Book 3 is about Armageddon and everything after that.
Book 2 is about angel Azazel, Book 3 is about angel Dina. (Don't worry, they're also all about Lucifer, Lucifer and Michael, and everyone you've already met.)
I pitched the trilogy once as "three books about three gay angels falling in love and destroying the world" so take of that what you will.
I have to mention that I planned to release the trilogy pretty quickly but given ABM doing.... better than I expected, to say the least, I got a lot more on my plate than planned. Things could take a little more time, so take this as my apology :')

tiny little cornelia promo interview has me severely compromised
this one
at no point does she say anything she hasn't said before (& that i haven't documented before somewhere in the bookshop Q&A translations) but STILL. her summary of what she can tell us about the story made me Unwell (putting the translation beneath a cut just to be safe)
"Well, the way I write is that I don't want to know anything… don't want to know too much about the labyrinth I'm entering. For me, the excitement of writing is about not knowing what the story will eventually reveal to me. So I'm not going to spoil the adventure the readers hopefully have waiting for them too much.
It's about revenge. The title says as much. Orpheus' revenge on Dustfinger. And you could say the revenge of a reader on a character he once loved very much. For that character not loving him back.
It is also about the question whether words are more powerful than images. It's also about being young and getting older. It's about a thousand - hopefully - themes so every reader can pick something out that speaks to their own life. Something they never thought about before. I hope it will be a journey from which you can bring back plenty of images and many places you might like to travel to."

i havent seen it said before but ive been thinking about this a lot tonight: i NEEEEEED another scene with mike and hopper having like a nice moment in season five. NEED. i need a scene where mike is upset (probably about will) that parallels his meltdown in season two and i need hopper to be there to tell him its okay. it doesnt even have to be another meltdown scene i just need hopper to tell mike that everything is okay because he is a repressed gay kid in the 80s and that is something that he most likely does not hear very often at all

there's a reason why we have poetry, and not just prose. there's a reason why prose has many genres, why it can be romantic, horrifying, or silly.
there's a reason why we have both television and film. and why genres of those are so varied as well. there's a reason we keep inventing new types of media to tell stories.
there's a reason why some books are turned into movies and others are turned into television. why some books achieve both. there's a reason why Batman started out in comics, then television, then films, then animated television, then video games, and why they keep making more.
there's a reason why a movie adaptation of a book is never exactly the same. why a character wears one color in one, and a different color in the other. there's a reason why the canon of stories gets "confused", because the different forms of media don't line up perfectly.
people have figured out millions of ways to tell stories, and with reboots and sequels and adaptations galore, i think we tend to assume anything that isn't a completely original creation/franchise/IP is a grab for money and attention. and maybe sometimes it is. but we have all these mediums to tell new stories and old stories, and new stories in old ways and old stories in new ways, and it's very much like our different ways of learning.
visual learners vs. hands-on vs. audio learners. we all need different input to learn, and different forms of media can teach us new things about what we like, what we love, who we are, just because it looks a little different. just because we prefer one thing over the other, doesn't mean that either one is less important, especially if someone learns something beautiful about themself or life from one of them.
i'm not sure if this makes a lot of sense, but i find it wonderful that even with recycled plot lines and clichés and too many seasons of whatever tv show, we're always trying to tell something new. always trying to learn something new. and even if nobody likes it, the creator felt compelled to make something because their thoughts were too big for their head.
tl;dr
human creation is wonderful, and i'm even learning to appreciate the existence of stuff that isn't really my cup of tea 💜🌈
