ALRIGHT YALL
I’m here to spread patriotic propaganda, bc fuck this country if it’s not about culture and art.
AND IT IS ABOUT BOTH SO I AM WAVING WHITE AND RED FLAG.
Anyway.
There is this movie, The Peasants (Chłopi) directed by DK Welchman an Hugh Welchman. It is animated drama based on polish Nobel prize winning novel by Władysław Reymont. It tells a story about a cycle of life in polish countryside at the end of XIX century. AND I KNOW IT MAY SOUND BORING BUT—
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was animated to look as if it was painted. Many talented artist worked to make oil paintings that became key moments for animators to put together. This technique is inspired by Józef Chełmoński (polish painter) and some of his works can be seen in this movie as scenes. Below Babie Lato and Bociany.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You may be familiar with this technique of filmmaking from Loving Vincent (2017) which is a story about Vincent van Gogh’s life portrayed in his style of painting.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
SO WHY AM I DOING THIS? Purely to maybe interest u all in checking out The Peasants.
I’m leaving you links to the trailer, PLEASE I BEG U CHECK IT OUT IT’S SO COOL!!!
youtube
Last thing i am leaving is spotify link to the song from soundtrack.
Thank u and have a great day bye!

When movie comes out on vod maybe i'd talk about it more but one detail i really love about "Chłopi/The Peasants" was the way dance sequences were directed. It really did felt how in both wedding and Antek dance Jagna was treated like an object, but in different ways. When Maciej is treating her more as a treasure, Antek views her as a sexual desire (a least i read it as that).
I wish i knew how to make gifs, but notice how in Jesień-Tańcuj (which is an absolute banger) there really isn't that much of erotic passion in a way that old Boryna interracts with Jagna. He does seem to be attracted to her, but he keeps a certain level of stoicism. Any time we see them kiss or do other intimate stuff it feels more like: a man and his prize. But getting back on track. The choreography seems to focus more on his observation. He circles her, spins her around a lot, like he's looking at riches from every angle. Jagna is tossed from man to man, like you could do with some gold or gems, showing rest of the village what beauty he'd got.
youtube
On the other hand we have Antek. First of all, dance definitely feels more personal, it's just two of them. There's also that passion that is far more stronger than in a previous one. The thing is though, it all come down to touch. Antek touches her, going through her figure like she's a statue. He takes of her ribbon of her braid, as the sharp red light reflect on their faces. There's definitely an emotion here, and with Jagna's leitmotiv playing in the background (also such a beautiful piece) it does seem like there is honesty in the way she views this situation, like she feels alive, like a person. But that sharp red is Antek's lust. It also almost feels like a warning call, to stop while they are ahead, as if something terrible is going to happen next...
youtube
Yes i am currently hiperfixating on Chłopi of all things, what about it.

Anyway, in light of ContraPoints' essay, I promised to continue my slow, steady Chłopi brainrot, so here it is:
My thesis is that you can absolutely read The Peasants, specifically the central pairing of Jagna and Antek, in light of the DHSM, it's just that it comes out of the other end as a pretty brutal deconstruction, which I don't think Reymont had intended.
Consider Jagna. She's your typical feminine protagonist, beautiful, virtuous and madly in love. The object of her desires? Goddamned Antoni Boryna. Antoni Boryna is, of course, very conventionally attractive, I daresay the most attractive man in the movie (although the competition is stiff, see Maciej and the organist's son, whatever the fuck his name is). He's also kind of unhinged. Antek is the kind of person who mostly acts on instinct with little regard to morality. He's nice to Jagna at the start, because he likes Jagna; he defends Hanka from his father's abuse, because nobody mistreats Hanka but him, and also fuck his dad; he leaves his dad's household and stubbornly refuses to submit to his authority despite the difficult situation it puts him in, because fuck his dad (sensing a pattern here?); he tries to kill his father, because fuck his dad, only to chicken out at the last second and realize, hey, maybe I don't hate my old man THAT much? These two are an Oedipal nightmare, is what I'm saying.
More than that, when I say that he acts on instinct, his instincts are... How would I put this... Stereotypically masculine in a very toxic way. He's very angry, bad-tempered, doesn't express tenderness that much - mostly because there isn't a whole lot of it things or people in this world that he genuinely likes. As far as I can tell, he kinda likes Hanka at the start (or at least the way old Boryna treats her is too much even for an A-grade asshole like Antek Boryna; there's also the fact that it's part of the ongoing power struggle between Antek and his old man, but that's neither here nor there) and really likes Jagna, and that's about it. His main motivation in life is to get one over his old man, which I almost sympathize with, since his old man is somehow even worse person than him. But don't get it twisted, Antek is a very, very bad dude. Some might even call him... A bad boy.
That's right, I am going there! Antek is in many ways very similar to the typical "bad boy" love interest found in romance novels. Toxic masculinity? Anger issues? Desperate need to dominate? Freaking daddy issues??? Yeah, baby, he's an alphahole all right. The only thing he's missing is, perhaps, an elevated social position, but even then - his dad is supposed to be the richest man in the village, and in the second half, his old man dies, presumably leaving Antek most of his property.
Anyway, Jagna starts out having feelings for Antek, which are in context kind of understandable. I mean, he is hot and she's one of the few people he treats with any tenderness; 18-year old girlies have fallen in love for less. The situation these two lovebirds find themselves in is of course very difficult. Jagna is coerced into becoming the trophy wife of Antek's shitty dad, while Antek is still married to Hanka and still mad at his dad for other reasons. But aside from being start-crossed lovers, there's another tiny problem with their relationship: Jagna, though young and in love, isn't stupid, and increasingly realizes that Antek, as mentioned above, is absolutely unhinged. Add to this the fact that Jagna kinda feels bad for poor Hanka, and it's kinda understandable why their relationship turns sour. So Jagna just... Dumps Antek. For which he rapes her and lets the villagers do the ending scene to her.
And here's where we get to the DHSM of it all. A lesser deconstruction might go for the "see, you can't in fact change him" angle, but like... Here? The thought of Antek ever changing never even crosses anyone's mind, least of all Jagna's. If she fell in love with Antek despite him being, as mentioned above, unhinged, it's because she clearly didn't know him that well and didn't recognize the full extent of his assholery. An understandable, if unfortunate mistake to make. Anyway, if the common DHSM dynamic is a woman elevating herself by worshipping or in some way (like morally) elevating an already exceptional man, it clearly doesn't work here. Jagna cannot adore Antek once she gets to know him, cannot abide by his assholery (she's too smart and proud for that), not can she change him into any kind of admirable person, and that thought doesn't even seem to cross her mind. Jagna cannot elevate Antek in any way.
But he can, and does, drag her to the mud.
That is the other side of the coin, the objectification and degradation of the woman, isn't it? And, well, since Antek cannot be elevated in Jagna's mind above her moral concerns, nor in real life by becoming a better person... Well then. To abide with the DHSM, Jagna has to be humiliated instead. First morally by sleeping with the married man, then, when she refuses to participate in this "sin" anymore, physically trough the rape and the ending scene.
And that's the unintentional genius of The Peasants - it reveals, in its full ugliness, the degradation side of DHSM by subtracting the elevation side completely. Antek was never worth the pain he put Jagna trough and that she was put trough for the relationship with him. But of course, is any man ever? There's a reason why Jagna never actually seems to consider a relationship with any other man, outside of maybe her ex Maciej, who, while not as terrible as Antek, still does some pretty shitty things, namely lying about sleeping with her (unwittingly contributing to her downfall). It's not that Jagna just happened to find a bad man. The whole system is clearly broken.
Of course, "the system" here clearly isn't meant to be just DHSM, as much as I focused on this aspect of it in this post, but patriarchy in general - for the writers of the movie if not Reymont (because I haven't read the book, so I can't speak on it, sorry). But to make a full feminist analysis of The Peasants is kind of outside of the scope of this tumblr essay, so.

Like I am so proud of my slavic origin (to be clear I am polish with ukrainian and belarusian roots, but to explain it I would have to give you polish history lessons) and my peasant ancestors that I can't even find words to describe it.
That's why I am waiting impatiently for this film (based on polish literary source "Chłopi" ("The Peasants" in english) by Władysław Reymont (this novel got Nobel Prize) which I love, adore and admire)

2, 18, 23, 26, 30 for Kallus? 👀👉👈
Thank youuu!!!
2. When I think I truly started to like them?
I know for a fact when exactly did I start liking him- The Honourable Ones, the moment I realised we were getting an episode of "enemies forced to work together", just as they crashed on the surface. I love how complex they made him and I remember finishing this episode with a quick thought "please, let him change sides, it would be so awesome" AND THEN THEY DID AND I FELL IN LOVE
18. How do you think they were as a kid?
I think he was on the more shy part when it came to interactions, but definitely strong and reliable and definitely hardworking (I have many different backstories depending on the fic, but in each he is from the lower levels from a poor family or living on the streets and he had to fight for the possibility to leave Coruscant)
23. Future headcanon
He and Zeb live together on Lira San and have a bunch of kiddos, no debate
26. When do you think they were being themselves the most?
I like to think for a while after joining the Rebellion he insisted on keeping his Imperial mask on, trying to convince others (and himself) that that was truly who he is, but after a while, it started to fracture, especially after he started spending more and more time with the Spectres (mainly Zeb). I believe Rebel!Kallus is his true face and the best moment to represent it is the last scene we have with him and Zeb as they arrive on Lira San- the adoration in his eyes at the sight of the planet, the way he looks so soft and hopeful and the way he smiles as Zeb puts his hand on his arm 💛
30. The funniest scene they had
Undoubtedly Polish dubbing gets the cake for the usage of "chłopie" in Through Imperial Eyes (see this post)- chefs kiff
But I also love the Old Married Couple™ bickering on Bahryn
"You're goint to hurt yourself!"
"Would you just shut up?"
Respectively in Polish dub:
"You're going to break yourself completely!"
"Graciously shut yourself up!"

Netflix, cinema and pirated stuff wrapped
Tumblr not giving me year in review got me yearning for summaries. So have a list of the movies and shows I've seen this year.
Again, if any follower would like to make it into a kind of a tag game, please do 🥺.
Batman, 2022. Loved Robert Pattinson in a smudged makeup. Loved Paul Dano. Loved the music and the climate of Gotham. Another shameful example of the main female character being worked in the story quite sloppily, as the movie wouldn't really suffer without the Catwoman.
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, 1975. Actually good.
Guardians of the Galaxy vol.3, 2023. This is what they mean by 'marvelisation' tho I'm not sure if we can use it for the Marvel movie. I mean the fear of being genuine and serious oversaturation of jokes to the point of tastelessness. Rocket's backstory was less moving than that of Dr. Doofenshmirtz. But I absolutely fell for Cosmo the dog and have to add one star for her. Right into my Laika fells.
Blade Runner, 1982. Actually not that good. But Rutger Hauer was kinda hot.
Barbie, 2023. Oh boy. Really hilarious and fun in the first two thirds. Then the Kens' plot was so botched and filled with the shallowest ideas of womanhood and feminism, I felt as if I was watching something written by an 16-y.o. who just got on tumblr.
Oppenheimer, 2023. Wooooo the physicists, woooo the physics, wooooooo the Manhattan project!!!!! Woooo Cillian Murphy's beautiful eyes!!!! It was like seeing Blorbos from my papers come to life.
Brother Bear, 2003. Fucking amazing.
A Bug's Life, 1998. Good. But I'm afraid I will forever associate it with that one yaoi alice cooper poison comic. You know the one.
Schindler's List, 1993. Actually good.
Deadpool, 2016. Eh. Probably would like it better if I saw it when it came out.
Niebezpiecznie dżentelmeni, 2022. I appreciate the concept, but it could be better. Marcin Dorociński as Witkacy was the most memorable I think.
Chłopi, 2023. Crazy good.
The Lobster, 2015. I like a weird film, it has to be said.
Aguirre, Wrath of God, 1972. Fine.
Fitzcarraldo, 1982. I'm in love.
Emigracja xD, 2023. A good, Polish show?? A good, Polish comedy show??? More likely than you think!!! Seriously, where are all the fans?
1670, 2023. Another good Polish comedy show????? I love that it has a small tumblr fandom already.
2nd season and a half of 3rd of The Witcher Netflix. I cannot overstate how shit it was. Do not watch.

do you enjoy your country's cinema/tv?
if poland has one thing its the insanely long series that's been running since the 80s or earlier! they're about the level of Telenovela storytelling though watching it they're often shot like Tatorts haja
to come back to the question: i have a few favorite movies though its nothing recent (excluding zielona granica and chłopi which im gonna watch as soon a si can)
i like Chłopaki nie płaczą (eng. boys don't cry) Przypadek (eng. Blind Chance) Twój Wincent ( eng. Loving Vincent), jak rozpętałem drugą wojnę światową (eng. how i unleashed the second world war, though the first part is funnier then the second imo) and uhhhh i guess Hitlerjunge Solomon/Europa Europa
its also from the director of zielona granica, and its stirred an ABSOLUTE political shitstorm in the media this past week, with most of PiS (like. the government lol) actively caling for boycott with the fucking line "tylko świnie siedzą w kinie" being echoed by the fucking president. normal country that's not living in its own version of the red scare. i digress sorry djsmsmaks
i guess the series i watched the most is "dlaczego ja" (eng. why me)? jsjskska its a semi staged show about troubled families and teens, that are shot SUPER dramatically with a lot of shitty plot twists and the like, and it sucks but i am just the right kind of fucked up to enjoy it ajmskajs

wyspiański i stryjeńska for the ask game :^)
wyspiański: what sorts of creative stuff do you enjoy making? painting, writing, embroidery, doodling at the margins of your notebooks? do you mostly stick to one type of art, or is it a little bit of everything (like the absolute madman overachiever wyspiański)?
drawing and animation are my main poisons!! (cries in struggling animator) but i have tried out a lot of crafts in the last few years!! knitting ugly scarves and uglier hats, sewing (mostly mending tho), embroidery, and recently i took classes in leatherworking and weaving! leatherworking was satisfying but soooo hard (my fingers hurt a lot lol) but weaving was actually super fun and i was really fast at it, might try it again
stryjeńska: what is our favourite (local or other) folklore-related thing? (folk costumes, traditional songs, style of architecture, legends...)
THE CHŁOPI MOVIE TBH LMAO
nah but after seeing the chłopi trailer i caught a bit of the chłopomania bug and read chłopi and nad niemnem, watched the movie and i am now concocting a little story of my own, so i've been particularly interested in costumes and other visual culture for the references - but i've always taken a bit of an interest in it! just today i went to the ethnographic museum in kraków and was BLOWN AWAY by their collection (really good photo exhibition rn as well!!). i've been really loving these two albums of folk music by orkiestra św. mikołaja (in fact if anyone has recommendations for more music of this kind - modernised or not, but based on folk tunes - pls do tell!! i'm on the lookout for inspo music <3) i've also impluse purchased like seven different books on the polish tatar community because it's an element in the story i'm concocting.
i also want to shout out this playlist of english folk music cuz there's some right bangers in there!!! i also got really into the ballad of johnny longstaff a while ago, which is a mix of folk, work and soldier tunes. gahhh i could reply to this question for hours!!!
