the thing abt the ahsoka show for me is. it just. it feels. it feels like a weird fan adaptation of rebels. it feels like they just went hey. what if we made really good cosplay and did a rebels sequel, i have a set we can use and some sick computer effects and graphics.

which is not a bad thing! it just! doesn't feel like it fits!

it feels like they've got the spirit of the characters, but they're just! not exactly right!

i know i'm gonna watch it bc i have to know post rebels things (that I can then choose to ignore) but. yeah.

I don't think it was necessary to make Thor a main character in a Loki show, the same way it WOULD be possible to throw together a Thor movie without having Loki be a main focus.

The issue comes in the quality of the narrative itself, and writing that if evidently without intention to care for (whichever) main character's importance will not work out. Neither the Loki series nor Thor 4 cared about the arc, motivations, history, or continuity of the titular characters beyond trying to make the media marketable.

Overall messaging can add a layer to the impact a story will have. Musical score can be a bonus way to control tone or tie a story together. Supporting cast can be vital to tell a good story. Prioritising their presence over anyone's (especially Loki's) characterisation is what the Loki series suffered from, not that other, original-adjacent characters were there.

#i'd say it was tell not show but frankly the plotline was so poorly done i don't think showing would have helped #it would have solidified the side characters better though #if they had put effort into characterising Loki right then poorly done side characters could've been a non-issue #messing up the main characters which are supposed to be part of a continuity is the number 1 issue #not managing the screen-time well was the number 2 issue #too much time wasted setting up characters that were going to monologue about their importance anyway??#too much time spent trying to establish the TVA as something important and controlling but somehow good #so much could have been cut out of the show and still gotten all that across #the relationships people built did so in like 2 days in-universe iirc so i wouldn't call them solid #season 1 was a useless introductory setup for the multiverse that didn't have any impact because there were like 4 other setups #scrap the characterisation and call it a reboot and it still threw Loki out as a weak and completely conventional protagonist #that's not engaging when every other character is also boring overall #even if their concepts weren't boring the way it was done was #The Loki Show #i can't be bothered thinking about the show because there's just so much #where would one start #i don't care enough about it to hate the show but i did find the fight choreography lacking too #the camera angles and general videography wasn't good #i have the same complaints about the choreography with every other disney+ show they put out #not even bothered with the MCU frankly #i'm happy to pretend the movies stopped after phase 2

Fun fact: In season 1, up until the video leaks, Wille is almost always the one to pull back or away from a kiss, but in season 2, the roles are reversed and it’s pretty much always Simon who pulls back while Wille clings to the contact.

#idk why I noticed this but I thought it was a great piece of choreography #idk if it was intentional either #it might have just been a part of how wills leads the intimacy in S1 but Simon does in S2 #but I think it’s also a great representation of where they’re at mentally #Wille is making a v conscious effort to leave the ball in Simon’s court and it’s so sweet #young royals #wilmon

Hi! First I wanted to say I've really been enjoying your q&a! :) So here's another one. Not sure if you have any thoughts on this since it's on the music rather than the design side, but why do some 4th gen groups only have one person sing the chorus? I thought usually members have their individual lines and then the entire group songs the chorus together. It took me so long to notice because they layer the vocals in the recordings so it sounds bigger. Only when I started watching some covers did I notice only one person is singing. Specifically I was watching the various Mirotic covers and wondering why it sounds so thin, and then once I saw I started seeing it everywhere. And 4th gen is probably not right, because Twice does it too. But why? The producers know it would sound better since they layer vocals on the actual recording version. Why not just do it in real life too, literally all the members are already there.

well, the short answer is because no one in fouth gen can sing.

the long answer is that there's been a significant decrease in the amount of debuted idols that have good vocal technique that can be performed while dancing. certain priorities are placed by companies in terms of what type of vocal training idols get, how much training they get, what type of choreography gets chosen, and even what type of people even get cast in the first place. obviously the industry is no stranger to streetcasting a rando just for looks, but in the past, and particularly with sm, there was generally effort put in to making sure that everyone slated to debut was at least a passable vocalist, even if they were cast purely for dance. but now that the trend in the industry has shifted to being more performance forward, some companies have changed some of those priorities. you can't do the same kind of vocal work that you see in second gen performances because now the choreography is too difficult and not optimized for it. the mirotic choreo is a fantastic choreo, but if you have really strong training, it doesn't inhibit vocals like something like ateez's fireworks choreo, which actively prevents them from holding steady notes. also, most companies have made the choice to emphasize dance training because it's been proven in the last several years that group vocals and even the quality of vocals don't particularly matter to the hardcore dedicated fans. fans are going to stream anything from their faves regardless of the sound, so why bother making songs that utilize a specific type of skiill that needs specific training, when you could just not and save the time and money. it takes a lot of musical training and notably training about music (not just vocal technique) in order to sing like nct or any other sm group, which is pretty much the only company that still trains their idols with good technique. there are a couple of small groups that still keep to the old standards, like a.c.e, tan, purple kiss, and onf, but it's much less common because it's become cost inefficient.

the other reason as to why they don't do it in actual performance that often is bc singing and dancing at the same time is fucking HARD. there's a reason why vocal quality improves when people are standing still. dancing and singing both involve having to control when and where you breathe and it's very difficult to do both those things together, so in order to accomodate for the increase in difficult choreography + lack of good vocal training, it's become common practice to rely more on backing tracks or exclusive line distribution in order to take the strain off the members and allow them to focus on the choreography rather than singing.

#the main issue with most 4th gen idols' technique is they all have shitty breath support and focus too much on head voice #which means they dont have the ability to maintain a good voice while dancing #kpoppies like to say that all 4th gen bgs are making nct ripoff music but they are not at all bc nct music is very vocal heavy #and an INTEGRAL part of it is group vocals #the only recent songs that have actually been nct ripoffs are atbo's attitude and tempest's dragon #and both of those are still too thin to be actual nct songs #kpop questions #i've said before that the closest analogue to an idol is a musical theatre actor #and even though pretty much every musical theatre actor has better vocal technique than any idol #idols are now doing significantly more difficult choreography than exists in like any musical.#so there is a tradeoff. obvs there are people that very competent at both. but those people are few and far between #i think that a lot of people forget that the majority of art (in any form) is mediocre. the great is the outlier #text #answers #lmao for new followers i do actually know how to sing + have musical training #i played in jazz and concert bands for eight years did musical theatre for four years and also sang in a choir for a year #i'm just very mediocre at music and i'm not very interested in the minutiae of it #which is why i dont usually field questions about it

THIS IS SO BACKWARDS can we please switch that #like bad dancing in a musical audition is whatever they know you’re just learning the choreography and it’s just not as much of a priority #as other parts of the production like you know. #actual thoughts in tags lol #its sooooooo good so far like AUGH so good #sleeping on it i think its kinda fucking hilarious that lan did All That to make us think lu guang was dead #i just KNOW they were giggling and kicking their feet this whole time #also i think lu guangs in the clear but wouldnt it be so funny if they killed him now after all that #interested to see how things develop but so far i like the villains theyre establishing!#it obviously has a very very different tone from s1 (or at least the beginning of season 1)#a part of me misses the more lighthearted tone BUT i think its only natural as the plot develops that things become more serious #and it seems like they are keeping the sense of humor when appropriate which is all i need!#moments like them making fun of lu guangs age and everyone teasing cheng xiaoshi after the reveal keep the levity #its clear its still retaining its heart and remembers that whats important is these characters despite the drama and insanity around them #animation went insane also #the moment right at the start of ep 1 where lu guang is passing out. animation is INSANE god #plus the fight choreography and animation is so so good #you can really see the characters different abilities and personalities in their fighting styles which is so cool #also theyre still keeping the insane cliff hangers <3 #literally let out a very loud squeak/gasp when chen bi fell at the end of ep 1 #also QIAO LINGGGGGGG !!!!!#im so so glad shes becoming more involved #not that she had no role in s1 but i think its high time she got some real spot light #so overall i really really enjoyed it!! im so happy to have link click back oh my god #hearing the gang tease each other and smile at one another and support each other again was all i needed #link click spoilers #asks #shi guang dai li ren #mine

The Greatest Showman (2017) is one of these frustratingly nearly perfect movies where you can clearly see how much work and effort went into costumes, set design, choreography, song, cinematography, the actors had clearly a great time, but… the script… its sooo weak.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not talking about the historic inaccuracies (if you wanna see a documentary go watch a documentary) or the story in it self, some of the best movies have a simple story (Patterson or When All Is Lost eg.), I’m talking about the lack of depth, of the lack of some deeper emotional connection you could build up with these characters. I don’t want the movie to tell me how tragic the love between Anne and Phillip is, I want to feel it. Don’t preach how important family is but then only give us one song for Phineas to repent. This movie clearly needed to be a few minutes in order to settle. the British 2019 movie Yesterday had a similar simple story about fame, love and the true meaning of successes, is only 10min longer and managed to leave a far deeper impact

one thing i've always understood as Akira Toriyama's influence on manga, even if just assumption on my part, was how his cartooning came to bear when he started writing pure action manga. when I think of his contemporaries I think of overblown special moves like Saint Seiya or the gory fist clusters of FotNS

to me it seemed what Toriyama brought to the table was the satisfaction of clarity in martial arts

when you read his fight scenes, which may have become notorious when animated for dragging on, there's no question about what's happening in the action

a clear kick to the jaw

a clean line of action on Yajirobe's slice

I first noticed this clarity pretty quickly early on in the General Tao fights during the red ribbon arc, where entire fight scenes playing out with these clear motions on the pages

Even as it got more detailed later on, the clarity stayed

clear hits on clear fight scenes

and dirtier but still completely legible lines of action

And when he started introducing the big over the top special moves we got the same thing quite often in DB: that simple visual clarity amplifying the excitement

i'm not super coherent on it right now, i'm not the biggest shonen action fan all the time and maybe Toriyama didn't introduce the world to visually clear and interesting fights in manga.

but when I see any action manga showing off clean fight choreography or sick ass lazer beams that show off clear shockwaves of destruction, i'll always be thinking of the GOAT
