"I collar the beast." "Wukong's fangs have been pulled." I can't believe y'all fr. "I get all the punishment and you get to mope." He was moping because he cares and feels guilty, speaking of, THE BINDING SCENE IS SO MUCH MORE INTENSE HERE WUKONG'S SCREAM THE PANICKED STUMBLING ohoho yes. MK: "It's tense in here." Wukong, two seconds ago: yOU tHINK I wANtED tO bE trAPPED dOWN hErE wiTH yOU. Wukong's tail: *cute pokey pokey* "You got demoted!" Ha, also "Nezhy" Oh my gosh, I don't think I caught this last time but Wukong subtly looks over to Macaque who just nods at him ajksms they were feuding and glooming a second ago but now its all silent communication and understanding in a glance. I'm throwing them off a roof. I'm struggling to hear what Macky says here, but I'm going to subscribe to the subtitles with "he likes acting." It's funnier. Also MK's "best attorney monkeys can buy" gotta love thinking about monkeys needing attorneys and also having money and buying things lol. "A pain crab on Monkey King's head." 😭 "Why is it always like this when you come here." actually love this one more because he's so grumpy and I feel like it has a different, funnier implication than the subtitles. he isn't causing chaos AFTER coming here, it just IS. what does that say about the vibes you bring /j. crying at Macky's face at all times, he is the picture definition of a grumpy cat, and then when getting pushed and the absolutely DONE yell of "Wukoooong!" I can watch a whole netflix series of Macky being fed up with Wukong's antics but getting dragged into them. tricky plan demon huh, that's a quick way to silence them after just talking about someone pulling the strings, especially on you MK. also Macky is SO little creachure with his face hidden like a hermit in that cape. "I don't trust anyone who isn't standing here. Right. Now." SAME MACONDO what a shocking statement from your old buddy. more at 11 only on ShadowPeachNews. The writers KNEW what they were doing. Also AHHHHH *looks at you with my big brown eyes* Fluffy I SWEAR I told myself I wouldn't talk about this again until you were able to answer the asks on my last yapping about this, BUT THEY MADE IT SO MUCH WORSE. Firstly, Macky's *voice* for that line delivery is the most solemn dramatic thing I have seen. He lives and breathes the cinema. AND MK I'm really tossing him over a cliff because he just HAD TO GO "He'd get away, right? He always gets away...right?" UGH TFW YOU'RE SO KNOWN FOR BEING THAT GUY WHO FLEES FROM BATTLE that it's brought up this time not for the *dude really???* but as a plea, an attempt at faith, haha he's always doing that...he did it again right? NO BECAUSE THIS TIME HE STUCK AROUND TO FIGHT. and Wukong's constipated expression there bc ohoho some monkey is for sure thinking about the past.
i am, for one, with you on throwing shadowpeach off a cliff bc they make me so unwell in this episode 🫠
for another:
LI JING WHEN I GET YOU!!!!! HOW DARE YOU CALL WUKONG A BEAT AND PULL HIS FANGS!!!!
also i can’t help but think about why Nezha was even there in the first place. because the one the kings summoned was his dad. Nezha wasn’t supposed to be there and yet he comes along 👀 why? my thought is: to plead the monkeys’ case. he immediately tries to defend them to his father and it seems like it’s been an ongoing argument
like sure he rags on Wukong and hems & hahs at him because like have you met Wukong that cheeky lil shit??? his gremlin energy just shoots to 150% whenever Nezha is near. he can’t help it. it’s his DO NOT PUSH red button that he will absolutely push
and Macky’s “why is it always like this when you’re here” to Wukong has such a divorced energy i love it 😍 he knows Wukong so well and is just resigned to it. every time Macky has had to interact with Heaven, Wukong is always there making a scene (he’s not exempt to helping swk but his point still stands lmao)
Wukong’s pout, my beloved
Tumblr media
when your ex says the reason he’s mopey isn’t because you got hurt but because he is in jail with you for something you’ve been blamed for. echoing his “NOT THE GREAT SAGE! HE’S GOTTA DRAG EVERYONE INTO HIS MESS!” comment from the memory scroll 👀
what who said that lol that was weird
god they’re so— squishes them and squishes them and squishes them and squishes them and squishes them and squishes them and squishes them and

Aight, here's a funny one: Either Wally or Frank being locked in one of the many Five Nights at Freddy's haunted restaurants, as a prank by either the listener (if it's Wally) or Wally (if it's Frank). Then things go horribly wrong when one of the animatronics starts moving. And the door isn't working. Cue the chaos and a perfectly-cut scream :3 [Might send this a couple times, cos Tumblr eats my asks, sorry in advance TvT]
Alrighty I tried my best! It isn't perfect but hopefully it'll still work with what was asked!!🩷 I can't really scream with the filters cause it sounds all funny! But I tried to still make it humorous!🩷🩷

Y'all we just saw movie 27 last night and it was SO GOOD!! Spoilers below~
One of the absolute BEST parts of the movie was Kaito's new theme, I absolutely ADORE the circus music with him it literally fits so well with every scene. Just in general the soundtrack was amazing.
Kaito wasn't in the movie a whole lot, he just kind of appeared sometimes, caused chaos, and then left and it's brilliant. The amount of times Heiji and Kaito save each other despite being rivals (and Heiji being pissed with KID) its just perfection.
Maybe my favorite scene is where Heiji and what's his face are having a sword fight on top of a plane and Heiji falls of, but Kaito come in (circus theme in tow), grabs him and just plops him back on the plane 😭😭 my guy didn't even stick around in case he fell again.
Ran spending the movie supporting Heiji and his confession was so cute. When she knocked out that guy and took him away so Kazuha and Heiji could be alone, like #1 wingwoman right there.
Dude and the confession scene was SO GOOD. Like that would've been the perfect confession if not for the fact the movie is technically not canon so relationship progress can't be made.
Kaito's reaction to Nakamori getting shot was the most heartbreaking thing, and then him visiting him in the hospital with Aoko but in disguise, and leaving once he woke up, man I wish he could just visit him as Kaito. It wouldn't be weird either because they're practically family! I just feel so bad for Kaito. But the phonecall at the end was so sweet.
Toichi's reveal at the end was literally the most villainous thing I've ever seen. Also it was a little unclear if Kaito found out his dad was alive or not? It probably mentioned something in the dialogue we missed but Kaito didn't really react all that much so I'm assuming he still doesn't know (and also something that big I think would be revealed to him in his own manga).
For the case itself, we tried our best to follow it but it was a bit confusing considering we don't know Japanese, but overall we were able to pick up on a lot of stuff.
All in all, amazing movie. The animation, the choreography, the soundtrack, everything was just so intense and super well-done, I can't wait until the movie is around with subtitles so I can get 100% of the picture rather than like 80%.

#i just finished watching the untamed and i spoke too soon. the show didnt peak at episode 13#the show's first 13 episodes AND its last 13 episodes just happen to be its best episodes#i don't even have anything smart ass to say. episode 42-46 just hit me in the feels. im just sad. but like. in a good way#it's funny that i saw so many mdzs/the untamed posts on my dash in the last year or so but i didnt get spoiled at all#and im glad for it. it's good to see everything unfold without knowing what's gonna happen beforehand#i LOVE the last 10 episodes or so. that's all. but i think i might like the yi city arc in the 3rd season of mdzs better#but other than that (and the special effect). i prefer everything else in the untamed version of the story#mae overshares#when i first started watching i said jin ling was 'irrelevant little bitch'. ok i feel bad abt saying this abt him now lol#ok. he IS a brat. but like. he's just a kid. the kind of kid that got spoiled AND bullied growing up#the kind of kid that grew up privileged but also without parents. he's just a child. i was being a bit too harsh on him#IN MY DEFENCE THO. I ONLY STARTED WATCHING SO I DIDNT KNOW HOW RELEVANT HE WAS GOING TO BE PLOT-WISE ANYWAYS#the part in mdzs that got to me the most so far is the scene where lwj tried to get wwx to come back to cloud recesses with him#after wwx killed wen chao. and wwx thought lwj wanted to bring him back for judgement (bc of his necromancy antics)#and lwj quickly retorted saying '[this trip] is not for the purpose of punishment/judgement'#and i guess the note of desperation in his voice got to me#but in untamed the part in episode 42 where lwj insisted on standing by resurrected wwx's side top this moment ten-fold over#i didnt turn on the english subtitles when watching most of the episodes after episode 10 so im not sure the official translation#but im still thinking abt the moment where jing guangyao tried to convince everybody that wwx tricked lwj somehow and wwx affirmed the idea#in an attempt to save lwj's reputation and honour but lwj just stepped in and went 'not true. i knew he was wei ying all along'#‘不错!’ ‘非也。我早就知道他是魏婴’............bro...............#and his FACE when he said the line 'i knew he was wei ying all along' BRO...........#like the way lwj just chose to trust wwx and stand with him against all of the world........bro#esp considering he regret that he didnt do that when he had the chance the first time and he must have felt like#it was part of the reason why wwx ended up dying. and now he's back. lwj just didnt want to make that mistake again#and its like........wow.........head full many thoughts......#im gonna be thinking abt this bullshit for a while#also i just realize why the english title is called the untamed. it's literally the translation of the theme song's official title#which is roughly 'the unsullied' and untamed is just another translation of the same title#it literally wasnt that deep and it took 40 episodes or so to figure it out rip

Restless Rewatch: The Untamed, Episode 25, part one
(Masterpost) (Other Canary Stuff)
Warning: Spoilers for All 50 Episodes!
Tumblr media
Holy crap, Episode 25! We’re halfway through! *Cue Bon Jovi*
Hunt Invitation
After taking a nice long break to watch Word of Honor pick lotus pods, Wei Wuxian and Jiang Yanli return to stressing over the shitshow that is the post-Sunshot cultivation world. Jin Zixuan has come to invite them to the Phoenix Mountain Hunt, with a special invitation from his mother to Jiang Yanli. Jiang Cheng reacts to this in a mature and reasonable manner, while Wei Wuxian...doesn't.
Tumblr media
On the surface, Jiang Cheng has matured in recent months; much more than Wei Wuxian, with his secret burdens, has. But it's only on the surface, as we'll see later in the episode, when Jiang Cheng's insecurity will take the reins.
Tumblr media
Jin Zixuan is adorably pleased by Jiang Yanli's acceptance of the invitation. Wei Wuxian is less pleased, but sort of tries to suck it up.
Tumblr media
Jin Zixuan kind of undercuts the romance of his errand by asking Wei Wuxian for the Yin tiger amulet as soon as Jiang Yanli is out of earshot.
Tumblr media
As always, Jin Zixuan makes an impression by being the best Jin currently in existence, but the Jins are terrible. JZX is working to advance his dad's ambitions, and as such he is currently Wei Wuxian's enemy.
(more after the cut)
Tumblr media
Opening Ceremonies
There's a bunch of cultivators arranged for the opening ceremony. Later someone will say that this is more than 5 thousand people. Ok, sure.
Tumblr media
As I've said before, it's best to think of it like a theatre production and assume the other 4,900 people are offstage or, you know, painted on the backdrop.
The young lead cultivators from the four main clans are standing together. Nie Huaisang is trying out some new body armor.
Tumblr media
The clan leaders are seated up on the stage, along with Jin Furen and Jiang Yanli. Unfortunately Jin Furen doesn't seem to have a personal name that I can discover. Her title Fūrén ( 夫人)  means she's the primary wife of the head of the family, according to this excellent meta.
Tumblr media
So “Madame Jin” is a decent translation...if you're French?  I feel like instead of English subtitles including borrowed words from French (”Marquis” in NIH), Greek (”Water of Lethe” in WOH), and other European languages, we could try borrowing Chinese words instead. Jin Zixuan's mom is titled, not named, Jin Furen. Since we don’t know her actual name, I'll call her that and abbreviate it JFR.
Tumblr media
Wei Wuxian's childishness continues at the opening of the hunt, as does Jiang Yanli's encouragement of his childishness. I know she's had a rough couple of years, and it's understandable to want to baby her little brother out of a sense of nostalgia. But it's not good for him, and she shouldn't do it; she should encourage him to be more mature, just as she does with Jiang Cheng.
War Crimes Contest
Jin Guangyao says they're going to have an archery competition, and they're going to liven it up by endangering some prisoners. These prisoners are Wens in Wen cultivator uniforms, meaning they're not the noncombatants that were being hunted down earlier. But they’re still helpless people in chains.
Tumblr media
There are three different reactions when the Wen prisoners are brought out.  All the Jins are pleased, or neutral. All of the Jiangs, including Wei Wuxian, are upset.
Tumblr media
The Nies and the Lans, what we see of them, are a little shocked, but not obviously upset. Based on those reactions, it seems like this is a maneuver that in-world is considered shocking and cruel, but not necessarily unethical or immoral.  Shocking, cruel displays of power are pretty normal in this world; remember when Wen Chao lit a Lan cultivator on fire just to say hello, and nobody complained?
This whole scenario, of course, has been designed to provoke Wei Wuxian. One major goal of this event, and the whole reason for wanting Wei Wuxian to come,  is to get the Yin Tiger amulet.  Making him lose his shit in front of 100 5000 cultivators is a good step toward compelling him to hand the amulet over.
Tumblr media
We see Jiang Cheng and Jiang Yanli both signaling Wei Wuxian to keep it together, and he takes a step back and tries to chill.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, Jin Zixuan seems annoyed by all this, and goes to take a shot at it, making it clear from his demeanor that this is easy and JGY is making a show of nothing.
Tumblr media
He hovers in the air and makes a perfect shot, pleasing most of the crowd and impressing Jiang Yanli.
Tumblr media
Then his cousin Jin Zixun taunts the crowd, challenging anyone to do better.  This presents a bit of a problem for Wei Wuxian. For the sake of the Wen prisoners, Wei Wuxian should just take this taunting and let the contest end, if no-one else is willing to take a shot. But for the sake of the Jiang Clan’s status, and his continued control of the Yin Tiger amulet, he needs to put the Jins in their place.
Tumblr media
Every Day is Blindfold Day
This moral dilemma is resolved with an abrupt tonal shift, where the humanitarian concerns of all parties seem to vanish. Wei Wuxian flirts embarrassingly with Lan Wangji and then goes as far over the top in besting Jin Zixuan as it's possible to go.
The flirting hits differently, incidentally, when you edit Jiang Cheng's annoyed reaction out of it:
Tumblr media
Lan Wangji doesn't seem embarrassed by Wei Wuxian's request, despite it happening in front of 100 5000 of their fellow cultivators. He looks Wei Wuxian straight in the eye for longer than necessary before turning away; it’s not exactly stern disapproval. We’ll get very used to this look, in Wei Wuxian’s second life.
Fortunately, Wei Wuxian carries a blindfold with him wherever he goes, (gifset here), and he is such a good cultivator he can hit 5 parallel targets simultaneously without even holding his bow straight or tightening the string.
Tumblr media
(OP fixed the angle of the bow for this gif, which is why everyone is standing on a hill in the background).
Everyone is pleased by this shot except Jins Guangyao and Zixun; even the Jin cultivators are clapping, and Madame Jin is presumably this happy any time Jin Guangyao’s plans go wrong.
Tumblr media
With that they start the hunt. Jin Zixun challenges Wei Wuxian to do the whole hunt blindfolded. Wei Wuxian agrees, but the censorship committee said no, apparently, so we don’t get to see that.
Flute Hunting
We do get to see Wei Wuxian luring monsters into his nets by being too sexy for his robe, too sexy for his robe, and playing the flute.
Tumblr media
We also get to see Jiang cultivators looking puzzled while random monster roars happen in the woods around them. We do not get to see any monsters, which is probably just as well.
Tumblr media
Jiang Cheng is annoyed and concerned, muttering "I told you not to overdo it" which means he didn't, you know, tell Wei Wuxian NOT to do this, just not to do it quite so well. Jiang Cheng knows what Wei Wuxian’s abilities are and he is making use of him, as he should, but he doesn’t have the courage of his convictions.
Tree Confession
Wei Wuxian sees Lan Wangji and starts to say hi, but then he has a desaturated flashback to Lan Xichen telling him to back off, so he stops himself.  But then Lan Wangji comes over to talk to him.
Tumblr media
Lan Wangji starts off talking to him about his latest anti-resentment musical discoveries, and Wei Wuxian pushes back, even calling him Lan Wangji, but gently.  Wei Wuxian asks "who am I to you?" and Lan Wangji turns the question right back at him, then waits a looooooong time, eyes downcast, while Wei Wuxian thinks of a serious answer.
Wei Wuxian says "I used to treat you as my zhījǐ" --which, as we’ve discussed before, is variously translated soulmate, confidant, intimate friend--with a strong meaning of "the person who truly knows me." Lan Wangji says "I still am." Coming from Lan Wangji, who NEVER says how he feels about Wei Wuxian or about anything, really, this sounds a lot like a confession of love.
Tumblr media
It definitely takes the form, visually, of a love confession, as Lan Wangji speaks, then gazes at Wei Wuxian while he waits for a reply.  Wei Wuxian's reply is this:
Tumblr media
I don't think Wei Wuxian is oblivious (I'm speaking strictly of CQL, not MZDS, as always with these posts; they are different works). I think he loves Lan Wangji back, and knows it. But Chenqing and everything it represents are between them.
Tumblr media
Lan Wangji is quite literally NOT his zhījǐ any more, because he doesn't truly know Wei Wuxian right now. He loves him desperately, but he doesn't know about his core, and hasn't accepted his cultivation method.  So Wei Wuxian answers his confession by showing him Chenqing, effectively declining to accept his still-conditional love.
Snake Measuring
Next we get terrible hetero courtship in the form of Jin Zixuan finding snake discharge on the ground and talking to Jiang Yanli about comparative snake measuring. Seriously: that is the actual conversation that they are having.
Tumblr media
Jin Zixuan boasts for a bit, and then awkwardly tries to ask Jiang Yanli on a date. When she turns him down he gets mad, because he's a typical heterosexual dude even though he's secretly a delightful person...very, very secretly. Jiang Yanli, for her part, can't string a fucking sentence together to save her life whenever he's around, so she's not helping their mutual understanding.
Lan Wangji attempts to hold Wei Wuxian back from beating Jin Zixuan’s ass yet again, but eventually JYL wants to leave, JZX tells her to wait, and WWX intervenes. Why doesn't Jiang Yanli have a maid or Jiang cultivator with her while she's on a date, incidentally? These kids are confused about whether they're doing feudal patriarchy or whether they're doing modern social life.
Jin vs. Jiang
Tumblr media
Wei Wuxian jumps in between Jiang Yanli and Jin Zixuan, which JZX objects to. Jin Zixuan has no fucking business objecting and Wei Wuxian is 100% right, at this point. As soon as WWX shows up JZX should hand her off to her Shidi, bow, and leave her the fuck alone. Instead, he draws his sword on Wei Wuxian, and kind of on Jiang Yanli since she's right behind Wei Wuxian.  Fortunately, Lan Wangji blocks him.
Tumblr media
This instantly blows up into a Jiang-Jin Clan conflict, with Jiang Cheng unfortunately absent since he let his unmarried sister go off in the woods alone with the son of the Cultivaton world's most famous lecher. It looks like it’s a personal conflict, but since Jin Zixuan already told Wei Wuxian directly that Jin Guangshan wants his amulet, any arguments between them are part of a larger power struggle.
Cousin Jin Zixun comes running up to start shit. Wei Wuxian pretends--I am SURE he's pretending--not to know who he is. The dude hassles Wei Wuxian every time he sees him; Wei Wuxian is a troll, and right now CJXZ is butting in to something that doesn't concern him. Rather than argue, Wei Wuxian insults him by telling him he’s not memorable.
Tumblr media
Jin Furen shows up with several maids and cultivator dudes in tow, which is the proper way for a highborn woman to wander around in the woods. She also brings Clan Leader Yao, because if it's Wei Wuxian Blaming Hours, Yao is going to be there.
I initially found the deep friendship between superhot Yi Zuyuan and dumpy Jin Furen implausible, but then I remembered that my lifelong bestie is a smokin' hot redhead with impeccable fashion sense, while I am a roly-poly nerd.  Friends don’t always match. Also, Jin Furen's actress, Hu Xiaoting, looks like this:
Tumblr media
...so she is actually hot in real life. Not as hot as Zhang Jingtong (who plays Yu Ziyuan) but literally nobody is as hot as Zhang Jingtong. Don't @ me, you know I'm right.
This is a heck of a long scene, so we’ll pick it up in part two!
Soundtrack: Livin’ on a Prayer by Bon Jovi
Writing prompt: Newly-divorced, cold-hearted CEO Yu Ziyuan buys an apartment next door to newly-divorced, warm-hearted pastry chef ...uhh let's call her Jin Dàngāo (蛋糕), sure. She can name her business after herself.
Tumblr media
They discover their daughter & son are in the same college class, and so they meet up over coffee....several times...trying to matchmake their hopeless, hapless kids, while bonding over their own terrible (former) taste in husbands. Who will Cupid strike first, the kids or the moms?

➵ as tooru’s younger sister, falling in love with iwaizumi hajime was easy. iwaizumi ultimately decided to rebuff you. through a few strange twists of fate, you’ve ended up living with the very boy who’d broken your heart. but, perhaps it’s not as bad as you thought it’d be. he is the perfect gentleman, after all.
warnings: f!reader, angst??
wc: 3.9k
m.list |  ch. 7 ↞ ch. 8 ↠ ch. 9
The film was alright. There was a certain chaos to it, an unhinged energy that gave it real character. Although, you weren’t quite sure how to feel about the reverse-Freudian implications of Marty’s mother getting a crush on him.
The phone in your lap buzzed, shooting light upwards into the darkened room. Glancing down, you read the name ‘Kohei’ on the screen.
It’d be rude to text him back during the movie, right? Since Iwaizumi was showing you this specific film… Although, it’d been your choice.
You turned your mind away from the question, your eyes flitting back to the screen.
The man with the frazzled white hair – Doc, was it? – was speaking at a rapid-fire pace. If it weren’t for the subtitles, you would’ve been totally lost.
Your phone buzzed again. Still Kohei. You covered the screen with your hand, trying to block out the ambiance-ruining brightness.
Yet another buzz.
“Who is that?” Iwaizumi frowned. “They’ve got a lot to say.”
“Sorry,” you blushed, turning your phone over so it was face down on the arm of the couch. “It’s Kohei.”
“Kohei?” There’s a strange lilt in Iwaizumi’s voice.
You ignored it. “Yeah. I’m pretty sure you met him at the party.”
“Oh,” Iwaizumi hummed. “Right.”
He said nothing more, turning his attention back to the screen.
You bit your lip, fingers tightening around your phone.
It felt a little weird, doing something so casual with him. Well, you’d been doing casual things with him for a while, but something about this just felt so domestic. Probably didn’t help that the last time you did this together, he’d kissed you.
Your stomach twisted at the thought.
God, that felt like a lifetime ago now. And maybe it was, in some way; neither of you were those people anymore.
But a part of you still wanted to kiss him, just like back then.
You knew you shouldn’t think about it. He’d pushed you away two years ago for a reason. If you wanted this whole living situation thing to keep going smoothly, you had to respect that.
And yet, it felt unfair.
This was all so easy. So natural.
But it was something you couldn’t have. Something you couldn’t hope for.
You swallowed roughly, slipping your hands under your thighs.
You couldn’t think about it. If you did, you’d just make things worse.
And you were willing to do just about anything to maintain the delicate friendship between the two of you.
✧ ✧ ✧
“So,” Tooru’s voice came through the speaker with its usual levity. “How’s living with Iwa?”
Your stomach dropped. “It’s good!”
It’s not a lie. You just didn’t want to talk about it with Tooru. At least half of the things that made the whole arrangement so fun were things you didn’t exactly want to mention to your older brother.
“You don’t have to rub it in!” He whined.
“Rub what in?” You blinked, a little lost.
“The fact that you get to live with Iwa!”
Oh. Right.
“You’re the one who suggested it,” you teased.
“I know, but it doesn’t make it sting any less!”
“He would’ve killed you within the first day,” you said, rolling your eyes.
“Not true!” Tooru barked.
You laughed. You didn’t need to see him to know the exact expression on his face. He’d always been comically expressive, even as a child.
That warm silence that always followed laughter settled over the call.
“Oh, man,” Tooru chuckled. “No, but how are you going?” He asked.
It’d been a while since the two of you had really gotten the chance to talk. Both of you had just been too busy; any catchups you managed to sneak in didn’t allow for much time to really get into the details of your lives.
But today was the day.
“I’ve been doing really well, actually!” It was such a delight to be able to say those words with full sincerity. “I’m still adjusting and everything, but… I think it’s going to be good.”
Small hiccups with Iwaizumi aside, everything was under control. Sure, sometimes you weren’t quite sure what they were saying in class, and yes, you did procrastinate more than perhaps you should’ve – but you were making a life here.
“See, I told you!” He chided.
“Yeah, you keep reminding me of that,” you said, rolling your eyes.
“I’m just saying,” he hummed, adopting his favourite ‘hoity-toity older brother’ tone, “you should’ve listened to me in the first place.”
“I know, I know…” You sighed.
Tooru had told you time and time again that things’d worked out. ‘If I can move to a whole new country on my own, then you can definitely do it with Iwa’s help,’ he’d said. You’d had trouble believing him at first; but for once, he’d been right.
“I’m glad the two of you have each other, you know?” He said.
You flinched. Now those were words you hadn’t expected to hear.
“Huh?”
“You and Iwa,” Tooru explained. “He doesn’t talk about his feelings often, but I think you being there has really helped him relax.”
Your stomach churned.
Was that true? Had your presence really made Iwaizumi feel better? He’d done a lot to help you, but you felt like you hadn’t really done anything for him. You’d just felt like something of a burden.
But if that wasn’t actually true…
“What do you mean?” You asked quietly. God, you hoped your voice wasn’t giving anything away.
“Well, you know,” Tooru said, “you’re someone he knows from home. That sounds pretty comforting to me.”
You were grateful he couldn’t see the pink blooming on your cheeks. “Are you asking me to move to Argentina?” You teased. You didn’t know what else to say.
“Well, I wouldn’t say no—”
“Because I’d rather die.”
The gasp that erupted from Tooru was so loud it peaked the audio. “How dare you? If we were living together, I’d be able to keep an eye on you. And, I could ward of any pesky boys.”
“That’s the problem.”
“Don’t be so inappropriate!” Tooru shrieked. “I don’t want to know the details!”
“I wasn’t going to tell you any of the details!”
“You were about to!”
“No I wasn’t!”
“I’ll have you know, you are far too young to be dating, young lady, and that—”
“I’m only a year younger than you!”
“And?”
“Shut up, Tooru!”
✧ ✧ ✧
You sighed, running a hand through your hair. The kitchen table was supposed to help you get your ass into gear. But instead, your laptop was open, but nothing had been done. The screen was probably a few moments away from turning idle.
A to-do list stared back at you, unrelenting. The sound of rain against the windows was your only companion. Iwaizumi had left for the gym some time ago, and you’d decided that music would be too much of a distraction.
Not that the absence of it was helping you.
Come on, you thought to yourself, just focus.
Easier said than done.
You groaned, leaning back against your chair. Why was it so hard to focus?
A deep breath, and then—
Slap!
Your cheeks stung from the impact of your own palms.
No difference.
The sound of the door opening was a beautiful reprieve. Finally, a worthy excuse to procrastinate—
“Hey.” Iwaizumi said a little breathlessly, holding his hand up in greeting.
You gaped at him.
Words might’ve come to mind if it was any other circumstances.
But when he was just standing there like that, you couldn’t help it.
A white shirt that clung to his torso, cheeks flushed with recent exertion, hair all messy—
It was official. You needed to start writing up your will, saying your goodbyes, getting all your chickens in order. Iwaizumi was certifiably too much, and you couldn’t handle it.
You were doing your best to respond. Truly. But it’s like his chest was a damn magnet, drawing your eyes back to it no matter how hard you tried to look at him respectfully.
Stupid Iwaizumi Hajime and his stupid shirt and his stupid chest—
“You good?” He asked, raising an eyebrow at you.
“Me?” Your gaze snapped up to meet his. “Oh, yeah. I’m great, actually.”
“If you say so,” he chuckled, shaking his head. “You look like you’re about to pass out.”
“Well,” you gaped at him, trying to fight off the myriad of phantasmal shirtless Iwaizumi’s dancing around your head. You were losing. “I’m offended that you’re not more concerned.”
“You’ll recover,” he grinned.
You pouted at him, crossing your arms over your chest. “I don’t know what I’ve done to deserve this treatment.”
Iwaizumi chuckled again, ambling across the room with an aggravatingly slow pace. The sooner he was out of sight, the better.
“It’s tough love, sweetheart,” he tutted. “It’s how the world works.”
“Well—” You huffed, trying to think of a retort. But, you were far too distracted by the use of ‘sweetheart’ – even if it hadn’t been used in an affectionate way.
“I’m going to have a shower,” Iwaizumi said, smirking at you. “I hope you’re feeling better by the time I get out.”
“Mhm,” you nodded, eyes fixated determinedly on your computer screen. If you looked up and saw his glutes, you were sure you’d implode.
You covered your face with your forearms, letting out a silent scream.
Why did God hate you? Why did he want you to suffer? Every time you thought you’d got it under control, you were reminded of the fact that Iwaizumi looked like that, and any work you’d done to neatly tuck your romantic feelings into a box managed to wriggle like a rebellious young cat.
Every goddamn time, you were reminded of just how determined he was, how responsible, how quietly caring, how—
No. You shook your head. No need to indulge those thoughts. Not when you were supposed to be doing work.
Although, there was no way you were getting anything done today.
✧ ✧ ✧
“How old are you in these?” You grinned, glancing at Kohei.
His cheeks flushed. “I think I was like… sixteen here?”
“Sixteen, huh?”
“You know what high schools like back home,” he whined. “We all deserve some stress relief.”
“And yours was… running at each other across a field while screaming at the top of your lungs?”
“You should try it,” he beamed. “It’s surprisingly effective.”
You laughed, your body curving towards him.
You hadn’t planned on inviting Kohei over today. You’d just happened to bump into him by chance on campus as you were heading home. As usual, he’d struck up quite the conversation. But you’d wanted to get home before it got dark, so you’d invited him to come with you.
So there you were, sitting on your couch in the front room, listening to Kohei tell you about the stupid video he and his high school friends made back in Osaka. Most of them were re-enactments of Naruto scenes.
To each their own, you supposed.
The creak of front door came from around the corner.
“Hey Hajime!” You called out.
“Hey,” he called back, voice warm.
“You’re home later than usual,” you said.
“I was hanging out with Taiki,” he explained. “We got bubble tea.”
“Oh, nice,” you nodded, watching as he came into view.
He smiled as he caught sight of you. It took him a moment to realise you weren’t alone.
“You remember Kohei, right?” You gestured to the boy sitting next to you.
“Hello,” Kohei nodded, bright smile on his face.
“Hi,” Iwaizumi said. His smile disappeared, expression becoming even stonier than usual.
The atmosphere felt a shade cooler than it had a moment prior.
“You didn’t tell me you were having someone over,” Iwaizumi said coolly, heading to his bedroom.
“It was impromptu,” you explained.
“Mhm,” was the last sound you heard before he disappeared down the hall.
You clenched your fists in your lap. Had something happened? Was it okay to ask?
If something was up, Kohei certainly hadn’t noticed it. Not that you expected him to.
“How’d you feel about the most recent Godzilla film?” He asked.
“Uh… I don’t think we have it.” That was the polite way of saying ‘Iwaizumi hates that film with his entire being, and he wouldn’t dare debase this household by buying it on DVD.’
You’d heard his rant a couple of times, actually – insufficient screen time for Godzilla, a lack of understanding of the point of a monster movie, mediocre battles.
“Oh, that’s okay,” Kohei shrugged. “It’s on Netflix.”
“Ah, I see,” you nodded.
Why did it already feel like agreeing to a movie was a mistake?
✧ ✧ ✧
Thirty minutes in and you knew it was a mistake.
You were bored. Horribly, terribly bored.
But you didn’t have the heart to tell Kohei that when he, at least, seemed to be enjoying himself.
Besides, you could find other ways to occupy yourself. You could just think (see: fantasise) about Gojou Satoru. That’d been more than enough to keep you entertained during your duller classes.
Iwaizumi ambled into the kitchen, his eyes flicking to the two of you for only a second. You held up your hand a little as a greeting; he didn’t return it.
You swallowed, turning your ‘attention’ back to the TV.
Something was wrong. You didn’t know what, but… If Kohei wasn’t there, you would’ve just walked over to Iwaizumi and asked him if there was any way you could help. But having a guest… complicated things.
Said guest stretched his arms over his head. You hoped, absentmindedly, that he’d had a shower recently.
He laid one of his arms along the top of the couch, just ghosting your shoulders.
You managed to hold back a frown. What was he doing? Was he trying to hit on you? Or was it absentminded? If it was the former, then it was a rather childish way of—
A loud clutter erupted from the kitchen. A quiet ‘shit’ quickly followed.
You shot to your feet on instinct, rushing over to where a very disgruntled Iwaizumi stood.
“Are you okay?” You asked, looking him up and down.
Water stained his shirt, the water jug lying sideways on the countertop.
“I’m fine,” Iwaizumi grunted, setting it upright.
You grabbed the tea towel, dabbing at his shirt. Sure, it wouldn’t be much help, but—
“I said I’m fine.”
You draw back sharply, shocked by the harshness in his voice.
Instead you turned to the puddle of water on the counter, laying the tea towel over it. You watched as it turned a shade darker, seeping through the cotton until there wasn’t a single inch of dry cloth left.
Iwaizumi had turned away from you, standing in front of the sink as he refilled the water jug.
You pressed your lips together, concern and agitation brewing in your gut.
He seemed… Stressed? Irritated? Bitter?
But you couldn’t ask. Not right now. You’d have to wait until Kohei was gone, at the very least. And you didn’t want to pry. Iwaizumi didn’t appreciate that sort of thing.
Was there anything you could do for now? Anything at all?
“Did you want to order food with us?” You asked, tilting your head to the side. It was the best thing you could think of; giving him one less thing to worry about might help, right?
“No,” Iwaizumi said curtly.
You blinked at him. “You sure? It’ll save you the trouble of making dinner.”
“I’d rather eat on my own,” he grumbled.
“Oh,” you murmured.
You were at a total loss. Something was wrong.
But you turned away, slinking back to the couch.
“Is everything okay?” Kohei asked as you sat yourself back down.
“Mhm,” you nodded.
As a precaution, you set a little more distance between the two of you. If you sat any closer, he might get the wrong idea.
✧ ✧ ✧
After what felt like three days, the film was over. What’d happened in it? You couldn’t say. You hadn’t been paying attention.
You’d instead been preoccupied with Iwaizumi.
Maybe you were worrying too much over something minor. Maybe he’d just had a bad day at work. Maybe Taiki had just been a brat. Maybe he just had a few assignments due in close succession.
But that didn’t stop you from feeling anxious. Was that pathetic?
At the very least, you wanted to make sure he was okay. This behaviour seemed… weird.
“What time is it?” You turned to Kohei, tilting your head to the side.
“Uh… eight,” he said, checking his phone.
It was that late already? But there was still so much you needed to get done…
You yawned, stretching you hands above your head. “Thanks for hanging out with me today,” you said, turning to smile at Kohei.
“No problem,” he nodded, in response, offering you a smile that didn’t quite reach his eyes.
Nothing more needed to be said to get the message across.
The two of you walked towards the front door, Kohei’s steps a little slower than yours.
You didn’t want to make it look like you were trying to rush him out of there, but you also didn’t want to give him the impression that you wanted him to stay. Everything just felt so weird, so… so high stakes. Like any little action you made was at risk of being misinterpreted.
“Well…” Kohei lingered at your door for a moment, looking at you with what seemed to be hope in his eyes.
“I’ll see you later, okay?” You smiled.
“Sure,” he nodded, opening the door. “Thanks.” He seemed a tad more dour than usual. Your stomach twisted a little.
“Bye!” You said, hoping that this, at least, would set your boundaries.
He didn’t seem bold enough to make an actual move, but you’d rather save the trouble.
You watched with a tiny sense of relief blooming in your chest as he stepped over the threshold and walked away.
Once the door finally closed, you let out a long sigh.
Something was up. Even you could tell that. His attempts at flirting, while juvenile, were earnest. What a strange evening this had been…
At the very least, you made a note to not invite him to your house alone again. That’d been your first mistake.
You dragged yourself to the kitchen, pouring out a glass of water. The tea towel was still soaked through, laid out on the counter. You’d probably have to get a bath towel to clean this mess up.
You sunk to the floor, feeling the cool tiles against the back of your thighs.
Were you going to have to turn Kohei down? God, you didn’t want to do that. That sounded awkward. And he was genuinely a sweet guy – your heart just wasn’t in the right space.
Not while you were living with Iwaizumi.
Iwaizumi.
Something was off with him, too. But you had no idea what. He’s always been tight-lipped about his own feelings. Even two years ago, it had never been about him; it’d be about the potential ramifications his actions could’ve had on the people around him.
He never wanted to be a burden. Even though he’d leant you a hand so many times these past six months, you knew he’d never ask for the same in return.
But you wanted to help. He deserved support.
Should you ask? Should you try bringing it up, or—
“Oh, fuck.”
Your looked up sharply.
Iwaizumi was stood at the entrance of the kitchen, shoulders tense with surprise.
“Oh, sorry,” you swallowed, crossing your legs.
He just grunted in response, turning his attention to the fridge.
You bit your lip, watching him closely. His posture was tense, his jaw stiffer than usual.
“Hey, Hajime?” You asked, voice soft and quiet.
“What?” His response was quick, sharp.
“Are you alright?” Perhaps you should’ve asked this earlier. Perhaps you shouldn’t ask it at all. But it was too late to take it back.
“I’m fine,” he grunted, half-slamming the fridge door.
“I know you’re lying,” you said softly.
He may keep his feelings to himself, but he wasn’t the best at disguising them. Especially when it came to annoyance.
With Tooru, it tended to bubble over, resulting in some rant or threat. But these days, you didn’t really see him get pissed except for when the washing machine wasn’t working properly.
“Mind your own business.”
Those words cut you to your core.
This was… strange. Unusual. He’d seemed fine this morning, and as far as you knew, he’d just… been to the gym. His demeanour had only taken a nose-dive when…
“Why are you being like this?” You asked, voice thin and tight. God, this better not be what you were thinking.
“Being like what?” Iwaizumi mumbled, staring at his phone.
You bit the inside of your cheek.
Did he really have no idea that he was acting like a petulant child who didn’t want to eat their vegetables?
“Do you have a problem with Kohei?” He couldn’t dodge that question.
“No,” he said, still looking at his phone. “He just comes off as a bit desperate.”
“What’re you talking about?”
“You can’t be serious,” Iwaizumi scoffed. “He’s not subtle.”
You stared at him, total confusion clouding your mind.
What on earth was he on about? Desperate? Subtle? Wasn’t it just a case of him having a grudge for no reason?
Wait. Holy fuck. Was he… jealous?
The realisation washed over you like a fever.
Anger, rage, bitterness. It all collapsed in on itself, feelings you’d been supressing for two years.
He’d crushed your heart in the palm of his hand two years ago. Told you that any kind of romantic relationship between the two of you would be too much of a risk.
And you’d let him.
You hadn’t fought back. You hadn’t stood up for your own feelings. You’d just let him do what he wanted, what he thought was best. And never, not even once, had you made your feelings known.
But here he was, with the audacity to be jealous of a guy flirting with you.
He didn’t own you. He had no say in what happened in your personal life. If you wanted to sleep around, if you wanted to have a long-term partner that wasn’t him… it didn’t matter. It was your business, not his.
And yet, the worst thing of all was that this response, this jealousy, made your heart flutter. It made you hopeful; that maybe, this time, things might be different.
That Iwaizumi Hajime wasn’t so far out of reach. That this time, you had a chance.
Fuck him.
“No,” you hissed. “I’m not letting you break my heart again.”
Iwaizumi’s eyes blew wide, his lips parting slightly.
“You dropped me like I was nothing two years ago,” you scoffed. “You don’t get to act like a spoilt little brat just because you’re jealous.”
“Look, I—” He stopped himself in his tracks.
He really had nothing to say for himself, huh?
You glared at him, the corners of your eyes beginning to sting. “You’re acting like a child,” you hissed. “I hoped you were better than that.”
You didn’t give him time to respond.
He didn’t deserve to.
You stormed off to your room, slamming the door behind you.
A deep, shuddering breath wasn’t enough to still your stuttering heart. Nor was it enough to move the lump in your throat.
God, what a colossal disaster.
But for once, it wasn’t your fault.
✧ ✧ ✧
a/n: sorry this one’s late! thank you for your patience :( i hope it was worth the wait

Episode 2 commentary
I guess Pig Dad owns a noodle shop
Blue Guy isn't dead and he has a kitten, that's good
This is going to be one of those episodes where the main character takes on too many responsibilities and learns how to say no, isn't it?
"Wow, MK...you look like hot garbage." Yeah, Glasses Dude—of course MK is going to look like hot garbage when Pig Dad turned him into his delivery boy, Blue Guy can't decide on a damn paint color, and his best friend/sister (May or Mei? I think it's Mei) takes him out partying every night
This is going to end up with MK being too sleep deprived to fight his totally not a boyfriend, isn't it?
Yes, I still don't remember everyone's names asdfghjkl
I call Pigsy "Pig Dad" because I have no clue whether that's his actual name or if MK just calls him that. Considering his business is named Pigsy's Noodles, I have a feeling it's the former
Or is it Pigsie? Please don't make fun of me for spelling it wrong, the Google Drive episode doesn't have subtitles from what I can tell
Part of me hopes Monkey King shows up in every episode because he seems cool
I would watch the pilot now but it's still a huge commitment and I should probably sleep at some point if I want to get assignments done in the daytime
Glasses Dude is honestly being a good dad. Good job, Glasses Dude!
I guess Blue Guy is named Sandy.
MK just turned into an air horn oh dear
Glasses Dude why are you just telling this to MK now
MK is going to clone himself a bunch and cause chaos now, isn't he?
Mr. Tang, you can't just allow your child to clone himself a bunch and cause chaos like this, I revoke your responsible dad card
Tang has the best expressions though and he's become my Discord icon for the moment
And of course all of the MK clones have gone rogue
"Porty"
Mr. Tang, your son's clone is eating your husband's business into bankruptcy and you're just going to keep eating? Damn, that's cold.
Poor MK has a bald spot now
Pigsy has some pretty good expressions too ngl
He went from anger to fear in half a second
"Are you going to clean this mess up?"
I love the contemplative look before Mr. Tang goes "I don't know."
He has surpassed Pigsy as my favorite character, I'm sorry Pigsy.
"One wavy Kung Fu coming up!"
Mr. Tang just coughed up a hairball oh dear
Why must they play the theme song in the middle of each episode
"Mystic Monkey Business?" Everyone is just used to this, huh?
"You're really bad at making clones by the way."
"Hand her over, you...me? We???"
MK why did you make so many clones when you only needed three? You could have had more hair on your head and less clones to defeat.
I like how they keep the continuity with his bald spot.
"Never forget...da music."
I love how Mei just tries putting the hair back on his head.
And MK didn't learn his lesson. Of course.
Mei making a beard out of MK's hair

Behind the Scenes of “Hologram”
Today marks exactly one year since I posted arguably my most popular fic. “Hologram” is a postgame Saiouma one-shot about escapism, loneliness, and running away from the past. I put a lot of myself into this fic and I’m blown away by all the love it’s received, not only on AO3 but in Discord servers and other social media. All that excitement made me keep thinking about it, so I thought I’d share a (very self-indulgent) behind-the-scenes of sorts about how I wrote it, as well as what I think of the story.
This essay will contain spoilers for the whole fic, so if you’d like to read it first, you can find it here. Of course, if the tags scare you off, that’s valid, but you might want to skip this post too since I’ll be quoting it throughout (so, just to be safe, expect the warnings I’ve posted on AO3 to apply here too).
If you’re a Lorde fan you’ll recognize the lyrics in the fic summary – “Nothing’s wrong when nothing’s true,” from “Buzzcut Season.” The inspiration for this fic came to me while I was on my way to an early shift at work, and I needed a good song in my head to give me the will to live for the next eight hours. Not sure why I chose that song in particular, but maybe part of it is because I like imagining stories to go along with the songs I listen to, like AMVs playing in my head, and I’d never been able to pin down exactly what this song reminded me of.
The mood of the music is really what compelled me – there’s something lonely about it, and the lyrics sound like the singer’s trying to convince herself that everything’s okay even when all evidence points otherwise. There are “explosions on TV”, and “The men up on the news / They try to tell us all that we will lose,” but “we live beside the pool / Where everything is good.” Despite everything going wrong, despite the notes of fear creeping into the pre-chorus, the character will “play along… in a hologram with you” and “never go home again.”
From there, it was an easy jump to “postgame Saiou” and that was that.
There’s a cloud of seagulls hovering in the air around him, and a dozen or so more standing just out of reach, staring him down with beady black eyes. Kokichi takes a slice of bread from the loaf he’s holding and tosses it to one of the birds, watches it catch it and stumble under the weight, watches its head bob as it tries to swallow the whole thing at once. It gets remarkably far before four other birds descend on it, shrieking wildly.
“Mine, mine, mine,” he mumbles into his folded arms, wondering if Shuichi would get the reference.
He really wishes Shuichi was here.
Kokichi upends the rest of the loaf of bread onto the sidewalk and laughs at the resulting chaos until his chest aches.
To start off, I wanted to create the same lonely mood from “Buzzcut Season” in Kokichi’s simulation. He’s not exactly trapped there, but he’s refusing to leave, because as long as he’s on the fake Jabberwock Island, he can pretend the killing game never happened. The trade-off to that escapism is that the only people he can talk to are the NPCs, who aren’t complex enough to be remotely interesting to him, and Usami, who… well, tries her best, but is more of an informational / moderation program and can’t offer him what a therapist could.
The only thing Kokichi has to look forward to is Shuichi, who he’s convinced is an extremely lifelike computer program rather than the real thing, because the real Shuichi would definitely hate him for everything that happened during the killing game. He’s so locked into this line of logic that he doesn’t let himself consider that Shuichi has forgiven him – he doesn’t even have a good answer for why the Future Foundation wouldn’t just keep the supposed Shuichi AI on indefinitely, believing it’s their way of baiting him into leaving the simulation.
It’s not a healthy or sustainable lifestyle in the slightest, but Kokichi stubbornly refuses to do anything but wander the islands aimlessly, passing the time with ice cream and feeding seagulls until the next time he can see Shuichi.
He dreams that DICE is here in the simulation with him, smiling and carefree as they explore the weird music venue. One of them has gotten the karaoke machine working, and another found a box of kazoos and maracas in the back room. Kokichi already pities anyone unfortunate enough to walk by the building tonight.
“Not going to sing, Joker?” one of his DICE asks (over the sound of their youngest member shrieking through seven kazoos at once), sitting on the bench next to him.
“Some games are more fun to watch than play,” he answers, leaning back on his hands and sighing.
           “Like a killing game.”
The warm dream-atmosphere turns cold then, and Kokichi’s head snaps over to look at him—but his brother is gone and Kaito’s looking back at him instead, blood in his teeth and face ashen pale.
“You... we don’t have to do this, man,” Kaito says, but it’s a lie and they both know it, and he doesn’t want to look behind him because he knows the machine’s looming over him with its unyielding steel and slow slow slow descent—
“You’re not real,” he snaps at dream-Kaito, who doesn’t respond except to lift him up again. “Nothing’s real, none of—PUT ME DOWN! LET GO OF ME! DON’T PUT ME BACK IN THERE!”
“Death is more mercy than you deserve,” Kaito says, and Kokichi claws and bites and kicks his way out of Kaito’s grasp like a wild animal, only to end up in front of a prison cell full of—
DICE, his beloved DICE, trapped and hurt and afraid, bloodied and beaten and helpless.
“Why didn’t you save us, boss?” says his second-in-command, clutching the bars with bleeding hands. “Why didn’t you do more? Now we’re all dead and it’s because of you.”
Moments like this are my reference to Buzzcut Season’s pre-chorus, where the not-okay starts to creep into the illusion. Despite Kokichi’s valiant efforts to forget, he’s still dealing with the aftermath of seeing his family hurt and in danger, watching his friends die, orchestrating the deaths of two of them, being killed himself— and then being told every bit of it was made up to entertain an audience who sees nothing wrong with that picture. Running away is not the way to heal from trauma, and one day soon it’s all bound to come crashing down around him.
“Do you know what this … island paradise represents, Kokichi?” [Hinata] asks, and Kokichi’s really not in the mood for a lecture but he continues anyway. “Jabberwock Island … was the setting for the fiftieth season of Danganronpa. The golden anniversary, they called it. It was my season.”
Kokichi hunches over, hugging his arms over his torso and stifiling a scream. He does not want to think about this right now—
“They wanted it to be the best season of all, which, unfortunately for us, meant it was also the bloodiest,” Hinata says. “Twice as many participants, deadly traps hidden across each of the islands— they even changed the way the motives worked, like when they told Fuyuhiko to cut out his own eye so Peko could have a quick death instead of suffering for days.”
“Do I look like your therapist, porcupine-head?” Kokichi hisses. A sharp pain is pounding into his skull, and there’s a bitter, metallic taste at the back of his throat. A taste like poison and blood.
“There was so much going on that the simulation malfunctioned,” Hinata says. “When people died, their Ultimate talents downloaded themselves into me. I’m told that the stress of so many personality grafts came close to liquefying my frontal lobe. I’m lucky I woke up at all… especially considering more than half of the others didn’t.”
“Why are you telling me this?” Kokichi grates out through the static building in his head. If he opens his eyes, will he see the beach or the dull chrome of the machine closing in on him?
“Because I know how much you want to forget about what happened,” Hinata says. “Believe me, I get it.”
           ….
“These things that happened to us… we can’t erase them, no matter how much we want to. Some things have to be remembered.”
I’d mostly like to leave Hajime’s season up to interpretation, but there are a couple things I wanted to say about it. I imagine Danganronpa is like the Hunger Games in that it’d go all out for big anniversaries. So, there were twice as many participants for the Jabberwock Island beatdown that was probably subtitled “Bloodbath Bay” or something equally appealing. The game’s formula changed from a focus on the mystery and the trials to “look at all these kids massacring each other a la Lord of the Flies,” and since the VR system wasn’t equipped to handle that many people and their deaths, it malfunctioned, giving Hajime way too many Ultimate talents and putting half the cast into comas from which they never woke up.
Viewers either absolutely loved or absolutely hated this season, depending on whether they were DR fans because of the “blood n’ guts” factor or the “mystery and psychological thriller” aspect. Team Danganronpa faced quite a bit of backlash for actually causing the real-life deaths of half its participants, but were able to weasel their way out of serious legal repercussions because of the waivers the participants had signed beforehand (plus a lot of bribery and falling back on their longstanding popularity). So, the cast of Season 50 failed to end the killing game, but helped provide great evidence for the “Danganronpa is morally wrong” argument.
Hajime works as a victim liaison for the Future Foundation and has been trying to take down Danganronpa since he got out of it. He’s like that in a few of my fics, actually; I like the idea of Hajime acting as a big brother of sorts to the V3 cast. It’s especially entertaining to imagine his interactions with Kokichi— though maybe not so much in Hologram, since to Kokichi he’s a representation of the past he’s trying so desperately to forget and the future he refuses to acknowledge.
“SHUT UP!” He launches himself at Hinata, his hands wrapping around the other man’s throat as he uses his momentum to slam him to the ground. “SHUT! UP!”
“Ko— ghk—” Hinata coughs, eyes wide with surprise, but aside from moving his hands up to grip Kokichi’s wrists, he doesn’t seem all that worried about fighting back.
The thought only fuels Kokichi’s rage until he’s choking Hinata so hard his knuckles are white. “If you want me out of this simulation so badly, you can kill me,” he snarls. “I’m never waking up! I’m never leaving, do you UNDERSTAND ME?”
Hinata grimaces, the outline of his avatar flickering, but he still doesn’t struggle, and Kokichi hates him all the more for it, despises him with a seething malice that festers low in his stomach. He wonders distantly if he’d actually kill this man in real life. Or if he’d be able to stop himself, feeling like this.
Kokichi’s breakdown here is more out of fear than anger. Like I mentioned, Kokichi sees Hajime as another piece of what’s hurt him, and no matter how Hajime tries to help, Kokichi will always remember Danganronpa whenever he sees him.
Warm yellow-orange light casts a relaxed, cozy glow over the dining hall. It’s an ambience compounded by the flickering candles on the table, which seems overly idyllic, but Kokichi will let it slide because of the adorable way Shuichi flushed when he noticed them as they sat down. Well, if he’s being honest, everything about Shuichi right now is adorable, from the way his hair keeps falling into his eyes to the way he’s nervously fiddling wth his chopsticks. Kokichi wishes he could keep staring at him forever.
Ah, not… not in a weird way, though, just… because Shuichi’s beautiful, and when Kokichi looks at him he can forget everything bad that’s ever happened, can create some new and brighter world to exist in.
This is an idea I wish I’d had room to explore a bit more in the story— that is, just how far Kokichi will go to pretend everything’s fine. I thought about making him border on delusional, like having him talk to people who aren’t there or forget what’s actually happening around him because he’s so lost in his fiction-within-a-fiction. It would have creeped Shuichi out a whole lot.
Unfortunately, there wasn’t much room for that past the plot I’d already nailed down, so I focused on his loneliness and escapism instead. I do touch on it later in this scene, though— the couple paragraphs where he slips into fantasizing about being a phantom thief having a surreptitious meeting with his detective under the not-so-subtle supervision of his DICE. There would have been a lot more of that if I’d gone with the ‘delusion’ stylistic choice, to the point where even the readers would be confused about what’s real. Maybe I’ll look into writing something similar in a future story.
Eventually, Shuichi sets down his bowl and looks away with a little sigh, and Kokichi clenches his teeth because that’s the sigh he does when it’s time for that conversation.
           “Um… Kokichi?”
Kokichi’s only response is to exhale the breath he’d been holding in a quiet hiss.
“I-I know you don’t want to, but… but I really need to talk to you about something,” Shuichi says. “Please?”
“My Mr. Detective can talk about whatever he’d like!” Kokichi says with a lilt to his tone that makes it sound more sarcastic than he wants it to. He takes the last bite of curry and wishes that it burns hot enough to hurt.
           “It’s about Kaito.”
This more serious part of the date scene is meant to reflect the little bridge in “Buzzcut Season”:
“Cola with the burnt-out taste
I’m the one you tell your fears to
There’ll never be enough of us.”
It’s a part of the song that sounds especially bittersweet to me, a bit of self-awareness between the insistence that everything’s okay.
Really all I think I managed was to reference it when Kokichi’s internal dialogue comments on his drink being “so sweet it tastes burnt” and then later not tasting like anything. But hopefully the mood’s still there.
“Tell him… that I have nothing against him,” he says.
           “That’s … not a lie?” Shuichi presses.
Kokichi shakes his head idly, still not raising his gaze. “I wanted to wreck the killing game and he wanted to save his friend. We both got what we wanted. I’d say the end more than justifies the means.”
           Was that a lie?
(I don’t want to die Shuichi I’m sorry I’m sorry save me Shuichi please I’m sorry ithurtsmakeitstop—)
His fingers tighten into clawlike shapes, nails digging sharply into his forearms.
I really don’t think Kokichi would have anything against Kaito, even if here he’s not being completely honest with how much he’s affected by what happened. It wouldn’t make sense to him to hate Kaito for something he himself proposed, but I think there’d still be a subconscious barrier between them. Too much history.
“Don’t go, Shuichi, I’m so sorry, I— that was so dumb, what I said, please don’t be sad anymore.” He’s not sure if he can’t breathe because of the exertion of running or because of the hysteria boiling over in his head. “Please don’t go, I didn’t mean to hurt you— please don’t leave, Shuichi, I’m so sorry.”
“Oh, Kokichi….” Shuichi’s tone is strange, soft and pitying, like he sees something Kokichi doesn’t, and he shakes his head slowly as more tears follow the paths of the others.
Kokichi goes to his knees, ready to grovel if that’s what it takes, but Shuichi follows him down, closing his other hand over Kokichi’s, and then they’re both crying and he doesn’t know why, and all he can do is repeat a mantra of I’m sorry and hold on as tight as he can.
It’s horrible. Shuichi’s horrible. Shuichi’s wonderful, and kind and lovely and perfect and Kokichi hates him, Kokichi adores him, and it doesn’t matter because Shuichi’s not actually here but Kokichi doesn’t want to be alone, just let me pretend some more, please, please let me have this—
“I’ll… I’ll stay,” Shuichi says at last. “I can stay a while longer.”
You shouldn’t, Kokichi wants to say, but his mouth won’t obey him. You shouldn’t stay if you don’t want to. I don’t deserve having you here. I’m not worth your mercy.
But there on the bridge, crying tears of relief, he soaks up as much mercy as he can get and hopes it’s enough to drown him.
I wanted to create a contrast between them that highlights just how the isolation and trauma Kokichi’s experiencing has affected him. He has an almost unhealthy reliance on Shuichi as “the only thing that makes this world bearable,” and panics when faced with the prospect of being alone again so soon. Part of why Shuichi’s crying is because he’s realized the extent of Kokichi’s desperation. It’s not that he thinks Kokichi’s apology is insincere, but that he’s hardly heard him apologize for anything before, so Kokichi going this far has him realizing how bad things really are.
The door rumbles and slides open when they approach, revealing the bright light of the log-out point that took Shuichi away every time, that would wake Kokichi up in his real body if he walked into it. Shuichi stops just a step away from it, biting his lip as if searching for something to say, but before he can find it, Kokichi reaches out to tug at his sleeve.
“Shuichi?” he says, distant as the waves on the beach that he can still hear if he listens closely enough. Shuichi turns back toward him. “Before you go, can I be selfish one more time?”
           “Huh…?”
Shuichi doesn’t move when Kokichi steps closer, reaches up to ghost his fingertips over Shuichi’s jaw and around the back of his neck. He lets Kokichi tilt his head downward, lets him hover inches away, close enough to feel their breath mingle in the night air. Kokichi pauses there to give him the chance to pull away. He doesn’t.
So Kokichi closes his eyes and the distance between them.
That last line is a ZEUGMA! It’s a literary device where one word refers to two more in a different way. A popular example is the hyenas’ line “Our teeth and ambitions are bared” from The Lion King. It’s my favorite grammatical trick and I’d love to see more of it in fanfic.
Slowly, he slides his hand down to Shuichi’s shoulder, using it as leverage to push himself away. That hurts even more. He can’t seem to open his eyes, and he feels so weakened, breathless, fragile. Cracked open, hollowed out.
When he finally does open his eyes, Shuichi’s are wide with some mix of astonishment and a dozen other emotions. Kokichi bows his head, taking a deep breath to ground himself. “Sorry,” he whispers. “I just wanted to know.”
“Kokichi,” Shuichi breathes, like a bullet through his heart.
“Goodbye, Shuichi,” Kokichi says, and shoves him into the light.
Shuichi’s little yelp of surprise cuts off abruptly as he falls through the door, vanishing into the glow, and all too soon, Kokichi’s alone again in a dream that suddenly seems far too vast. Alone, with the faintest taste of Shuichi’s lips still lingering on his own.
And he thinks, It was enough just to know you.
           It’s a lie.
Nothing to say here except that this is my favorite scene and I’m so happy with how it turned out.
Fake sun rises over fake ocean, fake seagulls glide through fake sky while fake wind tousles fake palm fronds. Kokichi lies on his stomach in the fake grass and talks to his fake family in the fake notebook. Gives them fake names and runs through everything he remembers about them. Apologizes, over and over, wishes he could hug each of them goodbye one last time. Wonders if it would be more painful to die or to never have existed at all.
He leaves the notebook of his memories on the seat of one of the Ferris wheel cars on the fourth island, because one time he promised them they’d steal the London Eye together.
He buys a can of fake soda from the fake convenience store on the first island and sits on the fake beach watching the fake waves. Wonders when he’d hit the end of the simulation if he started swimming, or if he’d drown first.
White sand, blue sea, bluer sky. Washed out, like an amateur watercolor painting.
He opens the soda can and raises it to his mouth, but … even the thought of drinking it makes him sick to his stomach. He sets it down in the sand and flicks it over, watching the bubbly liquid run down and sink into the sand. The color’s all wrong, like blood streaked against a metal floor.
He walks the fake streets of the fifth island, passing fake skyscrapers and fake commuters and their fake conversations, until he finally stops outside the factory he’s never been able to bring himself to go into. Smells like oil, and metal and machines and he can hear the sounds and he’s immediately back in the hangar, dizzy on adrenaline and desperation and leaning heavily on Kaito so he doesn’t keel over and die then and there. Kaito says something about how maybe he should sit down for a minute, and Kokichi didn’t agree back then but he does now, goes down on all fours and dry heaves.
When his vision solidifies and he can stop gasping for breath, he sits up and presses his back against the factory wall, covering his ears and hiding his face in his knees. Tries to convince himself not to imagine Shuichi’s there with him, holding his hand again, promising everything’s going to be okay.
“I’ve got you. No one’s going to hurt you anymore,” or maybe, “Breathe with me, it’ll be over soon. You’re safe now.”
           I love you.
He laughs until there’s nothing left in his lungs. He called these little daydreams obsession, before, but now they just seem sick and insane.
I wanted to indicate throughout this scene that Kokichi’s gotten substantially worse. Instead of halfheartedly interacting with the NPCs or finding something to spend time doing, he’s aimlessly wandering the islands, focused on how fake all of it is. Not even talking to his sketches of DICE can make him feel better. The suicidal ideation starts to slip in even if he doesn’t realize it— a fixation on wondering what death is like, purposefully triggering himself by walking by the factory….
The thing I want to talk about most though is the italicized I love you. I left it outside of quotation marks and dialogue tags on purpose because I wanted it to be ambiguous as to who’s saying it. If it’s Kokichi’s line, it’s sudden and almost out of place, like he couldn’t hold back from thinking it anymore. But it could be Shuichi saying it, too. Since it’s outside quotation marks, unlike the previous dream-Shuichi lines, it’s more vague, almost a whisper in Kokichi’s thoughts— like he can barely bring himself to imagine it and even feels guilty doing so, because there’s no way it could possibly be real.
           Which do you think?
Eh, I don’t have an answer. When I hear it in my head, they say it at the same time.
“How did you know?” he finally croaks.
Shuichi’s breathing still sounds shaky, too. “Because you said ‘goodbye,’” he says.
Kokichi finally looks up at him in a silent question.
“You never say goodbye,” Shuichi says, rubbing his sleeve over his eyes. “It’s always….”
“‘See you later,’” Kokichi finishes for him. Despite himself, a tiny huff of astonished laughter escapes him. “I didn’t even know, not until a couple of hours ago. And you figured it all out from one word?”
Shuichi bites his lip at that. “You kissed me,” he says.
Kokichi’s stomach twists and he looks away. “I said I was sorry—”
“No.” Shuichi squeezes his hand into a fist and lets it fall to thump against Kokichi’s chest, like he’s trying to knock some sense into him. “It was so honest, and vulnerable, and… and I know how much you hate showing how you really feel.” Another tiny sob catches in his throat. “And so it felt like … like something you’d do if you weren’t going to s-see me again.”
“Shuichi….” Kokichi trails off as Shuichi muffles his cries in his hand again. He’s so breathtakingly smart. There’s no one else in the world who thinks that way, no one else who could possibly be that attentive and that clever. Not a programmer, not a team of shrinks… how can an AI manage it? How is it that Shuichi always manages to take him by surprise? How can he see straight through him when he least expects it?
Kokichi’s hand reaches up to Shuichi’s cheek. Reverently traces the path of the tears falling down it.
“I wish you were real,” he confesses in a whisper.
Kokichi’s stubborn. So, so stubborn. And he’s not used to being cared about, if the way he does everything by himself is any indication. So it makes sense to me that he’ll refuse to believe anything good can happen to him even in the face of convincing evidence. He’s pretty self-hating for someone so arrogant.
Kokichi’s weak, deep down to his core, weak for this man. Already knows he’d do anything for him, and the thought is terrifying—that one person could have that much power over him, even if he doesn’t realize it.
But what if he has realized it? Couldn’t this all be an elaborate ruse, a lie he knew Kokichi would be so desperate to believe that he wouldn’t bother questioning it?
…Shuichi’s never hurt him, though. Only that one time, when he really deserved it. Shuichi wouldn’t … betray him, even for what he thinks is Kokichi’s own good. They’re… different from each other, that way.
           But still….
“I’m so scared, Shuichi.” It’s barely a whisper. “I don’t want to be alone anymore.”
“You won’t be.” It’s so hard to be skeptical, lost in his eyes. “I’ll be right there with you, for as long as you want. I won’t let you feel like this anymore.”
Promise me, he wants to blurt out. Promise you’ll stay. Promise me you’ll never leave me, Shuichi, he wants to demand, but that’s wrong, that’s manipulative and selfish and everything he doesn’t want to be for Shuichi anymore.
Shuichi, of course, says it anyway.
           “I promise, Kokichi.”
…
“Kiss me again,” he says. “Please?”
Shuichi leans in close, then pauses, his brow furrowing the way it does when he catches him in a lie.
“I’ll kiss you again in the real world,” Shuichi says. “Okay?”
Kokichi shakes his head. “Shuichi, please.” Please, I don’t think I can do this. Please, I don’t want to wake up to a lie. Please, one last kiss for me to remember in case it was all fake.
Shuichi reaches out to tilt his chin up and Kokichi closes his eyes, savoring every second, burning it into his memory.
Shuichi’s soft breath ghosts over his lips.
           “Trust me,” he murmurs.
Kokichi’s eyes flutter back open, searching his face. Shifting him around on the white board in his head, seeing what categories he fits into this time. Weird, of course. Suspicious, maybe not. Trustworthy?
           Trustworthy….
“I do trust you,” he realizes.
Kokichi’s still hesitant to accept all of this— Shuichi kissing him didn’t magically fix everything. He’ll still doubt all the way to the log-out point, but at least now he realizes that this simulation is only hurting him— that if things are to get better they’re going to have to change, too. He’s got a long way to go before he’s all right, but he’s not going to have to face it alone anymore.
             And that’s a wrap!
Once again, I’m really proud of this story, and I feel like I grew as a writer because of it. There are a few things I would change if I wrote it again, but for all its flaws it’s still my baby and I like how it turned out.
Thanks again for all your support for “Hologram,” and thanks even more if you actually waded through all this nonsense of a director’s cut. It’s a huge confidence-boost to think that people liked what I wrote, and even wanted to hear what I had to say about it. If there’s any interest, I’d love to review some of my other fics here, or theorize or brainstorm or whatever else  you’re into. (Ask me what Byakuya’s Thing is in my superhero AU, I dare you 😉)
I do have a WIP in my folder of bits and pieces currently titled “boy finally gets that kiss”, and it’s a post-Hologram scene from Shuichi’s point of view to just sorta… tie it all together, have them talk things over again… and kiss, of course. We’ll see if anything comes out of that.
           Until next time!

Bunny House
Summary: After seeing an image online, Wilford decides that his hand JJ’s pet bunny Sniffles needs an outdoor home, leading to some mess, laughs, and a surprise
Bunny House
JJ watched with a tilted head as Wilford carried a large supply of wood, paint, and other tools required for building a, and he quotes, ‘bunny home’. The bunny who would use the home was their little white bunny named Sniffles. Sniffles was mostly white with a black nose, black around his eyes, and a black heart-shaped surrounding his tail. Sniffles was always, well, sniffling and was currently sitting on top of JJ’s legs, dozing off in the warmth from the sun.
“There we are.” Wilford grunting, dropping the last bit of wood. “That should be enough for this.”
“Should be? Didn’t you sketch this out?” JJ asked, hands moving and the words appearing in Wilford’s mind, looking like subtitles across his eyes. JJ didn’t really have a voice, he could make some noises, but his speech was through sign language and a little bit of magic for those who didn’t know the language or weren’t looking at him.
“I mean, I did make a sketch.” Wilford pulled a rolled-up piece of paper out of his back pocket. He went over to JJ and showed him the rough sketch.
“There aren’t any measurements.” JJ pointed. “How do you know if you do have enough or if everything will line up?”
“I’m a master craftsman, my sweet sugarplum, I got this.” Wilford kissed JJ on the forehead as he took his drawing back.
“I feel like I need to call Dark to help.” JJ looked down when he felt movement, seeing Sniffles using his hind leg to scratch behind his ear.
“I don’t need Dark’s help.” Wilford puffed out his chest.
“Now I have to call him.” JJ took out his phone.
“No.” Wilford tried to snatch the phone but lost his footing, causing him to fell over on top of JJ, thankfully Sniffles hoped away in time and was now just bouncing along in the grass. “How’s it going~” Wilford grinned at his and JJ’s position.
“Are you going to kiss me or what?” JJ giggled when Wilford perked up from that.
“Yes, sir.” Wilford chuckled and dove right in. JJ happily sighed into the kiss and nestled his fingers in Wilford’s hair. They both suddenly stopped the kiss when they heard someone clear their throat.
“You weren’t enjoying the show?” The voice and giggle told them right away that Anti and Dark were there.
“What brings you here, Dark?” Wilford asked, getting off of the ground and JJ. JJ stayed down and reached over to scoop Sniffles up, who let out a little sneeze.
“I heard news of a robbery of a hardware store and they stated that several gallons of pink paint had been stolen as well.” Dark raised a brow. “So I added two and two together.”
“I’m just simply making a little home for Sniffles, no need to fret,” Wilford said.
“Do you know how?” Dark said as Anti went over to JJ, plopping down next to him.
“I have a plan.” Wilford showed Dark his drawing.
“There are no measurements,” Dark stated.
“No, there are no measurements.” Wilford huffed.
“Guess I’m helping.”
“I don’t need-”
“You are not about to saw off your own arm.” Dark slipped off his blazer and tossed it at Anti, who caught it and bundled it up into a ball, hugging his arms around it. “Roll up your sleeves, they’re going to get in the way,” Dark said as he worked on his own sleeves.
“You could just take your shirts off,” Anti suggested, JJ silently giggling with him.
“No. Where are your goggles.” Dark went over to the pile of supplies.
“The what?”
“Oh boy.”
Several hours passed as Dark and Wilford worked. JJ and Anti had gone in and came out with some lemonade at one point, which led to Wilford making a joke about the two being in maid’s outfits the next time, JJ blushed and Anti was more than willing to go back in and change. Dark interrupted that conversation, and potential chaos, by saying they needed to get sanding.
Finally, after all the nails were hammered it, the cornered were sanded softer and passing ‘the wiggle test’ the foundation of the bunny house was made and they could get to the painting.
“I’ve been wanting to use one of these forever,” Wilford said as he prepped a large airbrush, loading it with pink paint.
“I don’t know if we should trust him with that,” Anti said.
“As long as he aims for the house, I won’t hit him,” Dark said, crossing his arms.
“I wouldn’t mind seeing you coated in pink,” Anti smirked.
“That would be a sight to see.” JJ gave Dark a smile.
“I’m going to separate you two.” Dark didn’t like how Anti and JJ both giggled at that.
“And done!” Wilford hollered.
“Alrea-” Dark stopped himself, seeing that the house was, in fact, fully pink, but so were Wilford’s hands.
“Guess I got a little too excited.” Wilford chuckled and put down the airbrush. “I’m going to go pop in and give these a quick wash. You guys feel free to get started on the decorations.”
“I can make the bubbles.” JJ offered.
“Making those yellow stripes is going to be a bitch.” Anti said, looking at Wilford’s drawing again. “We should have taped then or something.”
“Shouldn’t be too much of a hassle, maybe two or three coats should cover it.” Dark shrugged. JJ felt something bump against his leg and found Sniffled headbutting his ankle, pouting. JJ knew what that meant and he picked him up, placing him on top of his head before getting to painting.
“That’s adorable,” Wilford said when he came back out, tucking his phone into his back pocket. “Although everything that you do is adorable.” He added, going over to JJ and giving him a kiss on the cheek.
“Are you going to make out in front of us again?” Anti teased.
“Don’t tempt me.” Wilford winked, grabbing a paintbrush.
“Just paint.” Dark cut Anto off before he could say anything. Anti just stuck his tongue out at Dark and they all went to work painting. JJ and Wilford painted bubbles to both roofs, Dark and Anti made yellow and blue stripes to the second floor and after those were done, made a candy-cane type swirl with blue on the bottom roof’s support beams.
“Are we late?” Edward called out as he and Henrik walked into the yard.
“Oh! Hello.” JJ straightened up when he saw the two, Sniffles still in his hair and sleeping. “More hello.” He added, seeing Google, Bing, Marvin, Chase, Robbie, Host, Bim, and Yandere coming to the yard as well. “What are you all doing here?”
“We’re still coming!” Phantom shouted with a laugh as he rushed over with Jackie. Mare, Mad, Blank, CJ, and RJ were following them.
“Why is everyone here?” JJ asked, looking at Wilford.
“For the grand finale of Sniffles’ home,” Wilford said, gesturing for JJ to go over to the crowd of friends.
“I knew he had something more planned,” Dark said softly to Anti as they walked over as well.
“Allow me to first.” Wilford grabbed a bottle of black spray paint and he went to the front of the little house, shaking the bottle before popping off the lid and spraying on the house:
Sniffles Jackson-Warfstache
“Ta-da!” Wilford bowered when he was done.
“Jackson-Warfstache?” Mad placed a hand to his face and tilted his head. “Isn’t it common for last names to be hyphenated together like that when people get married and don’t want to only have one last name?”
“And this is why I invited you over, my smart lad.” Wilford chuckled, heading over to JJ. “He’s a little blunter than even I am.” He added before going down on one knee, getting some gasps from the others. “And I knew I’d have an active audience.” Wilford reached into his pocket and took out a small box.
“You are not.” JJ took Sniffles off of his head, already tearing up.
“We’ve been together for many years and lived together for so long as well. I can’t see a future without you in it so I only found it right-” Wilford opened the box and a ring was shown, a gold band with flawless round red rubies inside. “-to ask you to be mine forever. JJ, will you do me the honor of-”
“Yes!” JJ jumped. “Yes, yes, yes!”
“You’re supposed to let him-” Google was stopped by Bing putting a hand over his mouth.
“Yes!” Wilford jumped up and hugged JJ tightly, spinning around with him. “He said yes!” Sniffles let out a squeak. “Oh! Sorry, little buddy.” Wilford let JJ go. “You’re going to make a great ring-bunny.”
“I have a feeling this wedding is going to be...chaotic.” Dark sighed.
“And you’re going to be one of the best men.” Anti bumped Dark with his hip.
“Shit.”

Okay so I just got into the untamed (partly your fault thank you can't wait to read your fics about it) and I'm a lil confused about the names? Idk if you can help at all but. Why does Wei Wuxien for example also get called Wei Ying? And why does Lan Wangji also get called Lan Zhan? Is it about hierarchy or respect? I tried looking it but results were confusing. Anyway if you can answer I would greatly appreciate but if not then no worries! Thanks!
H’okay, so. I might not be the best person to explain this as I am a white American gal but here’s my understanding.
Everyone (probably, more on this in a second) has two names: a birth name (Wei Ying, Lan Zhan) and a courtesy name (Wei Wuxian, Lan Wangji). The courtesy name is something they get when they’re older, and it’s a more formal name. Most people will use the courtesy name with each other.
Some of the characters either don’t seem to have one (Wen Qing for example) or we never get one or the other (Nie Huaisang surely has a birth name but we never hear it, Wen Chao surely has a courtesy name but it’s never used, et c).
There are also titles which are bestowed upon people who are super impressive (Lan Wangji = Hanguang-Jun), and people will be called by their station (Sect Leader Jiang, Young Master Wei) and whether or not these are translated (or translated correctly!) can depend on which set of subtitles you’re using, unfortunately. Netflix tends to just substitute in the name instead of what was actually said, Viki translates them, and I’ve seen screenshots of subtitles that have simply put the Chinese term in the subtitle.
Here’s the heirarchy, from most formal to least, using Lan Wangji as an example since he has all these names.
Honorary title (Hanguang-Jun)
Station (Lan-er-gongzi or Second Young Master Lan)
Relationship (for example, if he had a nephew, they would call him Lan-shushu or Uncle Lan) (Lan Wangji calls his older brother ‘xiongzhang’ which is the formal term for an older brother.)
Lan-xiong (this is so hard to translate into English, honestly the best translation is just ‘bro’, in colloquial terms it’s about equivalent to high school guys calling each other by their last names)
Full courtesy name (Lan Wangji)
Courtesy name without the sect name (Wangji - this is what his older brother calls him)
Birth name (Lan Zhan)
Diminutive (A-Zhan, which nobody actually calls him in the show, but his parents definitely might have, and people older than him could, they just don’t, because of his personality haha)
There’s actually so many layers to the relationships that we can peel back just by looking at what people call each other and it’s fascinating.
Wei Wuxian initially starts calling Lan Wangji by the fairly respectful Lan-er-gege (gege = big brother, so it’s basically acknowledging Lan Wangji’s seniority over him) (but this is also somewhat flirtatious of him because it’s a step below the more formal Lan-er-gongzi which is what almost everyone else calls him), but when Lan Wangji is ignoring him, he drops straight down to Lan Zhan, which is enormously cheeky of him. It’s like if you had just met an older classmate and started calling them a baby name. He’s doing it solely to get a rise out of Lan Wangji (which, of course, works) but then keeps doing it because ~reasons~
(horniness is probs the reason)
To use some other examples in the opening arc (you said you just got into it so I don’t want to accidentally spoil you on anything):
Wei Wuxian and Nie Huaisang immediately call each other Wei-xiong and Nie-xiong so they’re besties within like an hour of meeting each other
Pretty much everyone calls Lan Xichen by his honorary title, Zewu-Jun, because he is known to be Extremely Awesome
It’s interesting to me that Lan Xichen does not call his brother Lan Zhan, but goes with the just slightly more formal Wangji. The entire Lan sect seems to be Like That.
Conversely, Jiang Yanli calls both her brothers by affectionate diminutives (A-Xian for Wei Wuxian and A-Cheng for Jiang Cheng). Wei Wuxian calls Jiang Cheng the informal birth name as well, and Jiang Cheng calls him by his courtesy name (this is because Wei Wuxian is the older of the two - siblings never use the birth name of their older sibling once they have a courtesy name, apparently that’s considered rude. He could call him Wei-shixiong or da-shixiong, which would be Sect Brother Wei or First Sect Brother, but doesn’t. But that’s not weird. Using the full courtesy name is generally pretty neutral.)
One of the reasons Meng Yao stares heart-eyes at Lan Xichen (and a good illustration of Lan Xichen’s character in general) is that Lan Xichen calls him Meng-gongzi (Young Master Meng) which is a level of respect he a) almost definitely does not get anywhere else due to his parentage, and b) is absolutely unnecessary on Lan Xichen’s part - he could call him Meng Yao without being insulting at all, since Meng Yao has no courtesy name. But he goes out of his way to be extremely respectful to Meng Yao because he’s just That Sort of Person.
Okay I have probably rambled long enough about names and naming conventions, haha, I studied this intensely when I started writing fanfic so hopefully I haven’t gotten anything wrong. Let me know if you have any other questions!

Hi Goldy! I am curious about your take on how Jikook are edited in the behind the scenes clips since October (such as the ones for the Life Goes on music video, ABC Holiday Dynamite, and the Japan one (search on youtube for BTS japan shoot || behind the scene of Japan)). Do you think Jikook are interacting less, being just friends, being more professional, or is BigHit editing their interactions out? It just seems so different from the ones before Oct (FILA, Dynamite MV, Season's Greetings 2021)
Huh???😲😲😲
Tumblr media
BigHit is doing what what now?😥
Do you mean that as a fact or theory?🤔
Why though?👀 They are not Tae Kook? 😥
There's Bangtan video of Jimin with his third leg dangling loose in the air somewhere on the internet, I don't think BigHit is that savvy.
Tumblr media
Lmho. I mean I see what you mean but they are editors and cutting is what they do for a living. But this is Jikook sis. I don't see BigHit's incentive for 'cutting' Jikook's moments and you shouldn't assume that-
Unless...
Tumblr media
You don't think Jikook's been groping eachother homoerotically on set lately have you? Cos, chile I'll believe that! I don't trust Jikook anywhere near eachother's vicinity and personal space.
I've seen enough to traumatize the devil himself. Chilee. Lol.
Bighit, in recent times, mostly tend to cut scenes and moments if they are a bit risqué. Like JK shoving his butt in Jimin's groin face, sliding his hands down Tae's chest...
Often times too they cut moments if its redundant. If a part of a scene is already in the main content they don't bother showing it in the behind scenes. From my observation.
When an interaction is awkward they skip it too, I feel. I mean I am still waiting to see JK touching all over Jimin and feeling him up in Run 106- honey, I'll pay to watch that shit with my kidneys. Lol.
Often too they save some scenes for memories or some other shit that they use all those pent up footages for. Lol.
BigHit is a business, they produce content that per their research and analytics garners more engagement, audience retention and a whole other metrics. They put a lot of creativity into what they do as creatives and artists- I mean if the baby noises is anything to go by. Those bites are tired!
But often times too, they're tired and they're lazy, and they just put anything together and toss it out there without giving it much thought- isn't that how they leave Jin or Tae out of packages, how certain Jikook moments that should have never made it into screen time ended up in screen time- how JM's third leg made it to the internet? They should have cut that shit before uploading it with those subtitles and yet here we are.
I think people give BigHit too much credit- talking about JK shouldn't gay panic and run away from certain moments with JM if he knows BigHit editors are going to cut those moments.... JM's dixk begs to differ. Chilee, Jimin you should have just worn pants. Can't trust these phony ass editors my guy.
The editing is really not a big deal. Not to me. But I love your question anyway. Especially the bits about what's different about Jikook and the content BigHit has been putting out since October.
Well something sure did go down in October, I don't care what anybody says.
I keep saying BigHit banks on the bond and intimacy of the boys, and the boys are more than happy to showcase their bond for the cameras just as Tae said and confirmed in a recent interview- Tuktukkers y'all did an Oopsie on the whole Taekook don't like to show their bond on cameras! Lol
Tae said it himself not me- he lives to showcase his bond with the other members. *where is my skull head emoji. Lmho.
I think what has changed since JM's birthday in October to now, to me where BigHit is concerned, is the general marketing strategy of the company.
It seems to me the company is adopting a marketing module opposite of the strategy they had been using before the pandemic. I think I've talked about this though...
Hate to say I said it, but I said it. Lol.
They are limiting access to the boys to drive sales as and when. BTS dominates the internet and have amassed greater reach and attention partly due to the free content they put out on the internet. But those were never monitised- not in a direct or significant way.
In the wake of the virus, they've had to monetize their online presence. A single tweet from their Twitter account is a phone brand promotion as I pointed out in past posts. There's been an increase in their sponsorship collaborations, in Soop and many of the content they've put up this year. They even turned on ads on their YT channels it seems.
Like I've been saying, this situation is global and novel, they are going to experiment with means and methods till they find that sweet spot and that is what I feel we are experiencing- amongst other things.
Unfortunately for us, our access to Jikook is gonna take a hit like I said before because the numbers are in their favor. I mean go to their YouTube page and see the metrics for yourself.
Jikook's holiday remix pulls way ahead of their counterparts. If their going to monetize any ship brand in BTS it's Jikooks. Trust. But that doesn't mean any ship in BTS is spared.
Someone asked me a while back, when I talked about this, whether all these changes the company was going through was going to affect the way Jikook interact on camera and I couldn't answer that with conviction then.
But I mean we are seeing a subtle, if not drastic change in the way Jikook interact with eachother and with their glass closet.
What that means for us, I think, is the company is going to choose when and where to show us content and certain interactions but that doesn't mean Jikook aren't interacting- know what I mean? I mean they have them. The juicy moments that's gonna make us slap our mamas. BigHit has it all. They are just gonna save it for as and when based on their marketing strategy, if you know what I mean.
I mean we all saw that blackswan performance, we all saw the holiday remix performance etc.
And you are right about the less interactions post October and I've shared my thoughts on it so I won't go into it. But I will state again that they are not broken up either, not to me. Lol.
I think we need to examine what interacting less means. To me, I consider Jikook interacting less if they have an opportunity to interact and they don't interact in a way that is usual of them.
Majority of the content we've gotten in recent times are pretty much very official contents, interviews, etc. The entire BE era, as I said is not about Jikook or even BigHit.
It's about BTS, all seven and Jikook can't monopolize the shine like they tend to do in other BigHit marketed contents in my opinion.
Jimin tried to be funny and chill in the dynamite mv and RM nearly went ninja turtle on his ass when he called him out for not taking things seriously enough during the shoot- Left to grandpa Joonie, the kids will sleep at five. Lol.
Seriously though, there is a huge gap between what BTS views as marketing and marketable and what Jikook or even BigHit views as marketing, in my opinion. And conversations like that between RM and Jimin goes to prove it.
Another interesting thing about this whole marketing approach is how BigHit isn't substituting any other particular pair in Jikook's stead. I see them giving equal screan time to the individual members- well not in a technical sense but I think you know what I mean.
Are Jikook required to be professional in certain situations, absolutely. And in previous years, I think they took too many liberties with it. But as I said, now more than ever they are learning and need to learn to read the room because they wouldn't be able to get away with much if they don't.
BE is a self produced project, after Soop- after when they were isolated to help them bond and repair fractures in their bond. If there were anything they were not happy with that led to Soop, trust that they are going to fix it post Soop and it's going to reflect in every sphere of their interactions.
RM for example has chilled on his monitoring and censorship of Jikook, Jikook have been pretty considerate of the group and have tried not to do anything to have RM pop a vein, Tae has been stepping up too- with the members going out their way to praise him and push him to the fore front of the group unlike in previous years *cough cough I don't want trouble but chilee.
I mean Jimin pointed it out in the Be behind when he said Tae was working hard and putting his best foot forward because the members had been showering him with lots of compliments in recent times and he wasn't kidding.
In the LGO comeback live, RM praised Tae for working hard forgetting it wasn't just Tae and JM's reaction was telling. Of course he backpedaled to compliment JM too.
Suga did the same thing in the Be behind video when he was talking about JM and praising him- I mean it's Suga and his Jimin, uWu. But then he too backpedaled to compliment Tae when he realized what he was doing and I was like CAN SOMEONE PRAISE KOOKIE TOO PLEASE AND THANK YOU. Lol.
Anywho, the company is equally chilling on their Jikook agenda which I have speculated on several ttimes so won't get into- it's all so very kumbaya and God, I hate it. Lol.
Give me the chaos goddammit!
I feel Jlkook loosen up in contents that aren't like super official business moments and that's when you see their domesticity. Lol.
You see them having their me time in the background of some of the content, and in one of the interviews where they were sat a good feet apart but they kept moving closer and closer till eventually after their lunch break cut, they were sat very close to each other.
I'm not a fan of the cameras being shove in their faces during their private moments- Kookie certainly doesn't appreciate that either.
But they are working for a living nonetheless and making content is what they do for a living. So we are definitely gonna get the content from them alright, the fanservice, the organic moments passed off as fanservice, the moments that should never make it to screen- all nine. Lol.
We are just not going to get them in a way we are accustomed to. And it certainly doesn't help that they are each on their own personal growth journeys- gradually disconnecting from their fanbase, I mean Jk's been long gone duh, and Jimin did say he has come to the realization not everyone in the fandom loves him and he is learning to react less strongly to them; which to me translates as bye bitches you don't deserve me. Lol.
I mean dude didn't bother posting for new year this year- y'all Jimin is done with our ass. We might as well pack our bags and join him in Kookie's Casa. I call dibs on the broom closet under the stairs. Lol.
Jikook gets called fanservice and other creepy slurs in this fandom but people forget all of this is their choice too. They choose, are choosing to share all the bits of them they share with us, with us. Inspite of all the hate and insults, they choose to do that- if they did it for the fanservice don't you think they would have called a time out on it long ago because it's not worth it?
I hate it here.
I guess what I'm saying is, you are right about these observations you've made and some of the things you've pointed out are facts.
But we have talked about all of that so it really shouldn't be anything new? Kindly check my previous posts. I think I shared my point of view on what I think is going on with Jikook, BigHit and BTS.
Other than those, I don't think there is anything major up with Jikook honestly. I keep saying I don't think they are broken up. I don't see either of them closed off, emotionally open to connecting with the others.
If anything I said I feel Jimin is falling in love all over again with Kook. I mean when he looks at him he looks to me as if he is seeing Kook in a different light.
And it's funny how all through out 2020 he kept reiterating how his friends and family and relationships were important to him, shading the ef out of Kook during the Japan Stay Gold promos claiming his relationships were important to him and was what was Gold in his life.
He even went on to talk about picking an accent spending time around his friends and talking with his friends around his birthday but suddenly in the Be behind scenes he was talking about how he's come to the realization BTS is his only true friends and how friends come and go.
Clearly he's had an epiphany of a sort and has been through something post his birthday that has him setting his priorities straight in the aftermath.
In his Weverse magazine, he mentioned how he's recently discovered something about himself, about how he loves to be loved. He then went on to clarify that when during festa he talked about having a desire to perform with the members for a long that that he meant to say he wanted to be with them for a very long time.
But then JK said Jimin said that bit to him first. And if this is the interpretation Jimin is giving to that statement then- one plus one is two honey. Numbers don't lie.
Dude don whispered those sweet empty nothings in JK's ear telling him he wants to be with him for a very long time and shit.
And now homeboy out here setting up roots in gay boulevard. I don't think their well is drying up any time soon. Lol.
They are in a honeymoon phase again and they are not showing us. Stingy bastards! Lol
And when JK said to JM in response, that BTS is his home- wow. He really said that...
Tumblr media
He is Jimin's home. Literally. Please, my heartu😭
Jikook is real. Please support them.
Signed,
GOLDY

KA Watches TCW - S1:E11-E15
Links to > S1:E1-E4, S1: E5-E10
E11 “Dooku Captured”
Spacesuit Kenobi!
Interesting that Obi-Wan’s first reaction is to move out of the way, whereas Anakin tries to catch the danger.
HONDO OHNAKA!!! 🏴‍☠️
Kenobi is such a little shit and I love him.
***
E12 “The Gungan General”
Jar Jar why do you ruin absolutely everything?
Thanks for giving the clone pilot a name (Mack) and then immediately killing him off :(
I really don’t like that Senators outrank military personnel in this regard. Like, it’s an active hot zone.
(I have to remind myself that 1) military rank & rules are weird in RL, 2) military rank & rules are extra weird in a GFFA, and 3) I’m not the target audience.)
Ob-Wan Kenobi - “We’ll look like fools.” Sir, weren’t you just talking about lessons in humility earlier??
Jar Jar Binks, Agent of Chaos
Obi-Wan Kenobi just making friends by being an honorable and decent person.
***
E13 “Jedi Crash”
Aayla!
I guess they don’t have safety glass?! Just shards all over the cockpit.
Very perceptive, padawan…it’s a picture of a tree. (Did they just find that tablet laying on the ground?)
Got extra sad when Bly shook Cameron’s shoulder :(
While I appreciate that they’re name-dropping clones, I sure do get sad when they immediately die (or in this case die before we know their names).
OKAY…so the subtitles said his name was FLESH. I had to re-listen and am pretty sure it was actually FLASH, but what if it wasn’t??!
I appreciate that they kept the little sideways shuffle that lemurs do in RL.
***
E14 “Defenders of Peace”
It’s difficult to believe that Aayla “Best Jedi” Secura is Quinlan “Shenanigans” Vos’ padawan.
I’ve decided that Wag Too (the leader’s son) and Tub (Lurmen with pet bird) are in a relationship. Nothing you say can change my mind. (Their little victory hug and the shot of them looking at the camera sold it for me.)
***
E15 “Trespass”
Anakin’s little shoulder pat on Rex was a cute detail.
I really like that Obi-Wan said, “Maybe they’re smarter than we are.” It’s such a good attitude that is so rarely used or actively shown in general media, especially when the MCs are interacting with a ‘less civilized’ community.
“Just shut up.” LOL
I’ve seen the gif, but Obi-Wan’s face when he’s hugged is priceless.
- See here https://kamino-coruscant.tumblr.com/post/654065337254461440/anakin-obi-wan-meeting-with-the-talz-the-clone
Overall, I really liked this episode. It was an interesting way to show us Obi-Wan (and Anakin was there too) working as a Jedi rather than a General.

Restless Rewatch: The Untamed Episode 16 part one
(Masterpost of All the Recaps)  (Canary’s Pinboard)
Warning: Spoilers for All 50 Episodes
Tumblr media
All righty, this one is going to be a laff riot...not. Let's do it.
The first half of this episode is like a beautifully executed standalone tragedy, while also threading together all sorts of themes and paying off all sorts of relationship building that's happened in the previous episodes. My hat is off to the writers, while I also shake a fist at them for making me cry an unreasonable amount.
We’re Sailing on a Strange Boat
The episode starts right off absolutely DESTROYING me with the Yunmeng brothers holding hands, fingers interlaced, in the first of many hand-touching moments that punctuate the episode.
Tumblr media
Jiang Cheng has to be pretty far gone to accept this degree of comfort and tenderness. I think, from their positions, he is also holding Yanli's hand out of the camera's view.
Zidian finally lets the trio go, and they immediately turn the boat around and head back to Lotus Pier. Wei Wuxian gets the clever idea to turn the benches into makeshift oars but nobody gets the clever idea to use magic to push the boat like they do literally every other time they are in a boat.
Tumblr media
Their emotional need to go back to Lotus Pier is understandable, but they are being disobedient and irresponsible by doing it. Jiang Cheng is the future of the clan, and should not risk his life, particularly after his mother chose to sacrifice herself to protect him and after both of his parents told him to go hide with his sister and personal bodyguard brother.
On the other hand, Jiang Fengmian, as clan leader, probably had a duty to go into hiding himself rather than go home to die romantically, so his authority is questionable at this point. Anyway, this is the Jiang Clan, they get to kind of do what they want, except when that pisses Jiang Cheng off.
Lotus Pier Massacre
Back at Lotus Pier, the Wens are kicking Jiang ass. The fight choreography is pretty good, taking full advantage of walkways, railings, pools, and other features of the environment.
Tumblr media
Using the set this way always makes fights feel more kinetic and real, as opposed to simply sparring in an open area.
(more after the cut)
Tumblr media
Yu Ziyuan is fighting adequately with a sword, having given her preferred weapon to her son.  She's clearly been at it for a while, and is tiring; the Wen soldiers are starting to land more and more sword blows but no critical hits yet.
Tumblr media
Wen Zhuliu is kicking ass and possibly melting cores, although we don't see him do it to anybody yet. Later we'll hear from Jiang Cheng that he crushed the cores of his parents, but it's not clear when that happens.
Sixth young master replays Jiang Fengmian's entire archery lesson in his head while he waits, and waits, for Wen Zhuliu to finish strangling a dude the right moment to shoot an arrow at Wen Zhuliu.
Tumblr media
Homicidal tart Wang Lingjiao notices him lining up a shot, strolls over, and stabs him in the back while he's still thinking about what Jiang Fengmian said. One could wish that JFM's archery lessons weren't quite so wordy.
Wang Linjao normally doesn't carry a sword because of her low spiritual power, but apparently can use one just fine when she's killing kids.
If you start feeling like this episode is unreasonably painful, just think of it as building up calluses so you can handle Yi City when the time comes.
Jiang Fengmian to the Rescue
Jiang Fengmian shows up very far past the nick of time, although he is not actually useful, so it's questionable whether arriving earlier would have helped. But his wife is glad to see him.
Tumblr media
Netflix subtitles say that Jiang Fengmian calls Yu Ziyuan "My Lady!" which sounds courtly and romantic in English. His actual words are "San Niangzi" which hunxi-gullai breaks out here.  I might render this as "lady wife!" rather than "my lady" but I don't think English really has a perfect equivalent.
Tumblr media
Jiang Fengmian sails across the courtyard, knocking down a few Wen soldiers and becoming a young, slender man in the process.
Tumblr media
I mean, come on, that stunt double does not look like a boxy middle-aged man from any angle.
The Dying Bit
The episode splits up the big death scene for dramatic effect but I'm recapping it all together to keep things simple.
Within moments of arriving, Jiang Fengmian gets shanked by Wen Zhuliu like Scatman Crothers in The Shining (or Groundskeeper Willie in The Shinning).
Tumblr media
Wen Zhuliu stops a Wen soldier from finishing JFM off, just so that a different Wen soldier can deliver the killing blow from the back, which is kinda harsh. With all this spin-fighting there is probably not an implication of cowardice when someone dies from a stab in the back, but still. Too rude, Wen Zhuliu.
Yu Ziyuan sees Jiang Fengmian fall, and after having a moment of sorrow and despair, she stabs herself in the heart, falls down, crawls to him and interlaces her hand with his. He revives just enough to give her hand a squeeze and say "San Niangzi" one last time before dying.
Tumblr media
She dies next, with a smile on her face at the end. The soundtrack plays that amazing "horribly emotional death scene" music that isn't one of the tracks available on the OST, argh. This same music appears at the end of Xue Yang's story.
Tumblr media
Of the many things I love about the Untamed, the complexity of all the minor characters is possibly my favorite. These two people suck at parenting, and suck at being married, and ultimately suck at protecting and leading their clan, making stupid, selfish choices at every step of the building conflict.
And then they have this incredibly romantic death scene, in which they both face the inevitability of failure, and find comfort in failing together. Yet their death scene is totally in keeping with who we know them to be, and who they are to each other; the drama doesn't cheat by making them ideal lovers or great people at the end. But they have a great, great moment.
Tumblr media
Jiang Yanli, waiting in the woods while her brothers are presumably running toward Lotus Pier, drops her lotus pendant, which is made of the loudest jade ever discovered, and it breaks with a crash.
Yanli, who is a well educated young lady, knows a moment of doomy symbolism when she sees it.
Tumblr media
Jiang Yanli: Who put a giant rock out here in the woods? What are the odds I’d drop my pendant directly on it?
It’s all Over Except for the Crying, Running and Choking
Tumblr media
The brothers climb up on the roof and are shocked to see nothing but Wen soldiers and piled up Jiang corpses...
Tumblr media
...including one child who is either about to become a zombie or who is being played by a young actor who can't control their curiosity, judging by the way this eye is sneakily opened while the camera is running.
Tumblr media
There's a moment where Jiang Cheng is saying they must have spared his parents, they must be okay, where Wei Wuxian's face is just...wow. You can see right here the gulf in life experience between these two.
Tumblr media
Wen Zhuliu roams around looking troubled while searching for more people to kill. He’s an interesting villain; someone who believes his loyalty to his boss makes him a good guy, but knows his boss is a bad guy.
Then we are treated to a hell of a camera move, where it tracks over Yu Ziyuan and Jiang Fengmian together on the floor, heroic in death and still holding hands, and then sweeps up to show their killers sitting on the lotus throne.
Tumblr media
The dead couple were at odds for their whole lives together, while the evil people who killed them are acting like devoted lovebirds. It's a stunning shot and a terrific thematic contrast. When Wei Wuxian eventually comes to take his vengeance, he will spend some time turning Wen Chao and Wang Lingjiao against each other, before ending them.
The camera shows us JC's reaction, then shows his mother, then WWX’s reaction, then JF; each reacting to the death of the person who loved them. Some folks may feel that Jiang Fengmian actually did love Jiang Cheng but was just bad at showing it. But Jiang Cheng doesn't think so, and I don't think it's a given that parents love their children.
Tumblr media
Side note: Macroexpression king Wang Zhuocheng is able to open his eyes so far that a giant strip of white shows above his irises, and keep them like that, which is quite a trick. Try it yourself.
Meanwhile Wang Lingjiao and Wen Chao gossip about YZY and JFM's bad marriage. Wen Chao admires YZY's beauty, and Wang Lingjiao insults her character, and announces that she's going to stab YZY's body a few extra times. Jiang Cheng briefly faints at this, taking a page from Wei Wuxian's book, and rolls off the roof.
Run Run Away
Tumblr media
Both young men run, and run, and run away from Lotus Pier while Wen Chao and Wang Lingjiao mistreat the bodies of Jiang Fengmian and Yu Ziyuan
Tumblr media
The stabbing happens off camera, because it's ok to stab a live child on camera, but not a dead adult. (As always, there are cultural reasons for "what's ok" in any country, and I'm not saying anybody's wrong about these choices).
Wen Chao follows this up with pouring a cup of wine across their faces. He does this in the style of a libation for the dead, but as a desecration, combining mistreatment of bodies with profaning a ceremonial rite. In a world where ghosts are real and have sharp fingernails, this is deeply, deeply stupid.
Tumblr media
Yu Ziyuan’s actress Zhang Jingtong is able to have liquid poured INTO HER EAR without flinching. Mad props.
The brothers eventually finish running and arrive in a field with an extreme purple photo filter on it. Which I've done my best to remove for these gifs, with variable results.
Tumblr media
Jiang Cheng wants to turn around and go back to Lotus Pier. He says he wants to retrieve his parents’ bodies and to take revenge, but he's devastated and it seems likely he just wants to die with everyone else.
Tumblr media
Wei Wuxian pleads with Jiang Cheng to calm down and stay safe, while Jiang Cheng gives himself over to anger and shock as the brothers shout at each other.
Tumblr media
Punching and running ensues, and Wei Wuxian tries to hold his brother back, grabbing him around the shoulders him in a gesture that painfully echoes the many hugs he's given over the years.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This time Jiang Cheng doesn't just push him off. He turns around and chokes his brother for nearly a full minute, while screaming at him and blaming him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Just as when Madame Yu beat him, Wei Wuxian doesn't fight back; he pulls on Jiang Cheng's wrists but doesn't hit him or try to break his hold.
Finally Jiang Cheng lets him go, and cries out for everyone he's lost, while Wei Wuxian weeps silently next to him. Eventually they fall asleep in the grass together, their bodies curled up in the form of a heart.
Tumblr media
Damn, this episode really brings it.
Side Note: during their argument, Wei Wuxian says, among other things, that "revenge is a dish best served cold," according to subtitles. It's a French saying from the 1800s so it's probably not precisely what Wei Wuxian is saying. More importantly, as a longtime Star Trek fan I can't help but hear James Kirk yelling "KHAN!!!!!" whenever I encounter that phrase.
There’s Got To Be A Morning After
When they wake up in the morning, Jiang Cheng is still in his feelings, but now his feelings have moved along to despair, from anger.
Tumblr media
I feel bad for noticing how handsome they both look in this scene. Let's all feel bad about this together.
Jiang Cheng is free to have this level of emotional breakdown because Wei Wuxian is there keeping his own shit together and focusing on what matters.
Tumblr media
When Jiang Cheng refuses to get up, Wei Wuxian reminds him, very, very gently, that they have a sister, who has waited all night to know what happened.
At this, Jiang Cheng gets up, but won't look at Wei Wuxian, continuing to blame him for everybody else's actions, as he walks onward to find Yanli.
Tumblr media
Wei Wuxian follows, hurt and bereft, as he gets to work internalizing everything that he's being accused of. This is good practice for his future as a widely reviled bogeyman.
Part two will be slightly less awful! Coming soon!

How They’d Be As Mukbangers:  Harry Potter Characters
Tumblr media
How They'd Be As YouTube Mukbangers
Tumblr media
James: Every video has a theme.   Like, I'm not even playing.   Holidays?  All kinda of holiday themed food.  Quidditch World Cup coming up?   Things inspired by the country of his favorite team.   Just a random day?  Everything is blue.   He's that type of way.
Tumblr media
Sirius:  If a mukbanger was a thirst trap.  I could easily see him really getting into.  Dark background, black gloves, aesthetic as fuck and like, he doesn't even talk.  He just sits there, looks hot and somehow makes eating looking incredibly sexy.  And he fucking knows it.   Bitch also one hundred percent rolls his eyes back when it hits his taste buds.  Licks his lips and his fingers.  Takes way too big of bites.   Most people would say it's cringy how sexual his videos are...but everyone is secret subscribed anyway.  With notifications on.
Tumblr media
Remus:  This goes one of two ways.  If he's in a good mood and things are chill, he'll find a recipe, make it to the mother fucking 't' and then have a little mukbang slash review on said recipe.  Nice lil chat.  Sweet tol bean.   Precious. If it's near the full moon there ain't none of that.  Ya boy, brings in his monstrous plate of food, sits it down and just tears into like a fucking beast, no talking.  Just nom nom nom.  Unintentionally thirst traps and people opening talk about when Remus goes beast mode.
Tumblr media
Peter:  Candy and sweets channel! Small mukbangs with reviews from different candies from Honeydukes!
Tumblr media
Lily:  Lol, Lilypad.  She ain't playing around.  Her videos are planned out, edited and just generally finessed to perfection.  Even had music added to it with tiny vlog segments as it's set up.  It's a little pretentious but she does have a good following.
Tumblr media
Marlene:   This bitch.  Fucking competitive eating queen.  Tiny ass lil ho can eat you under the table, bro.   Think RainaIsCrazy on YouTube.  She can fucking smash.  Usually does eating challenges from different resteraunts and competitions.  Often, challenges Remus on his wild days.   He's a beast but she still wipes the floor with him.
Tumblr media
Dorcas:  The collab.  Dorcas always has good food and good company.  She's all about sharing a meal with someone and talking about random things.
Tumblr media
Alice and Frank:  The couple channel.  It's generally filled with so much fucking cute and the food is always tasty.  It's sickening they feed each other but you also can't help but awww.
Tumblr media
Molly Prewett/Weasley:   Family recipes.   Molly's channel are tried and true recipes from the Prewett family.  Cook with me and tons of kitchen life hacks.  Also, that woman can turn a ham sandwhich into a full course meal. Bet.   Always taste tested by Daddy Weasley.  Yes, I said Daddy Weasley.
Tumblr media
Lucius Malfoy:  The most pretentious fucking channel to ever exist.  It's a whole fucking production that admittedly he does put a lot of work into.   Somewhat thirst trappy like Sirius' but instead of just having a plain black background he goes out of his way to shove as much of his manor into.   Only eats the most expensive food fucking on the planet and of course, it's prepared by House elves cause he's a twit.  (Yes, I know this is Thranduil but honestly wouldn’t put it past Lucius to be this fucking pretentious.)
Tumblr media
Severus Snape:  Actually pretty solid content.  His exquisite skills in potions actually made him a rather good chef.   Tasteful shots, edited well with music over everything and subtitles.   Simply audio for the eat portion at the end.  Nothing too fancy for the background.  Often just a very clean kitchen. Solid content though.
Tumblr media
The Black Sisters: Mass chaos.  Part vlog, part drama channel, half the time the food never even gets finished because of fights.
Tumblr media
Bill Weasley:  The Traveler.   A lot of egyptian food.  Some made by hand.  Some vlogs from street food while he's out just generally doing his job.   Short videos but solid.  He's hot and he picks good food.  It works for him.
Tumblr media
Charlie Weasley:  This extra ass bitch.  He's the bitch that does all that outdoor cooking.  You know what I mean.   Shots in the woods, roaring fire.  Lit by a precious dragon child no doubt.  Dragons lounging in the background like those bitches who always have their dogs there.  Yes, I'm jealous.  Close up shots of him cutting things on a custom wood cutting board. Everything he makes causes your mouth to water.  God damn, scarred, freckle faced bastard just gobbles it up and ends every fucking video with a wink.   Charlie Weasley is the ultimate thirst trap and he fucking knows it.
Tumblr media
Percy:  Percy's channel could be epic but instead is boring as fuck.  Why?  Because he insist on having the most snooze worthy meals that are 'sensible' and THEN he proceeds to talk about politics.   He actually had a pretty decent following of other like minded individuals but my god- politics and porridge, Percy?  Really?
However, once he chills the fuck out, leaves the ministry to do something else - it’s a game changer.  Brings the family on for mukbangs.  Does videos with mummy weasley.  Percy grows his hair out and Bill teases him for being a copy cat.  Much better.  Still talks politics but it’s fucking hiliarous and now the food is poppin.
Tumblr media
Fred and George:  Alright, this shit right here.   Every fucking bit of it is a self promo for the shop.  Meals inspired by and that would go well paired with 'this product'.  Like, that's the whole thing.  And then they run an add for their shop at the end featuring the product.  It works for them because they're smart, they're hot and they're also wildly entertaining with their constantly sibling squabbling. But yeah.  Big promo for the shop.
Tumblr media
Ron Weasley: Honestly, out of everyone.   Ron probably has the most followers and it's because he doesn't say shit while he's eating. He sits down with a massive fucking turkey.  Nods at the camera and just tears it up.   It's literally so satisfying.  All the food is prepared by his mother.  So it's obviously fantastic. ( I just had to use this gif.)
Tumblr media
Ginny:   Gin's channel is usually team building videos with the Harpies.  'Cheat Day: Vlog and Mukbang w/the Harpies' type of vibes.  It's cool though and since it's a famous quidditch team the fans enjoy the behind the scenes action and actually drop all kinds of recipes for them to try in the future.
Tumblr media
Hermione:  Hermione could easily veer off into Percy's channel of misery when she gets started on her rants but mostly they're really chill videos.  Mukbang and Book Review type of vibe.  Or sometimes even the playing of an audio book while she does her thing.  All in all, wholesome.
Tumblr media
Harry:  Lol, I swear.  Fucking awkward bean.   Harry's videos are literally of him making the simplest of things and being so fucking awkward. "Er, well, hi guys.  So I'm about to head out for work.  Running a bit late.  But we're having a bit of toast and jam."  Like it's literally just little videos of him eating whatever throughout the day.  But of course, since he's Harry Fucking Potter- his follower count is astronomical.
Tumblr media
Neville:  Now, this boy.  This boy is a goblincore gobbo's wet dream.  Gardening videos with homegrown veg.  Recipes from Grandmother.   Have a nice Veggie Pot Pie with Professor Longbottom in the Hogwarts Greenhouse.  There is a fanbase and it is huge.
Tumblr media
Luna: Honestly, the weirdest fucking channel in the world.  Like she finds the weirdest things to eat and goes from there.  But Luna is bae so it's cool.  Also, a thousand percent does Smoke Sesh + Mukbang videos.  You know it's true.
Tumblr media
Dean and Seamus:  Literally, eating in the most crowded pubs as they visit football games around the country.  Seamus will definitely pull the Irish card from time to time to have a drinking competition.  He wins everytime.  He may be a little dude but shit- homie can hold his own.
Tumblr media
Cedric:  Honestly, it's so fucking pure.   Straight up did videos during his time at Hogwarts in the Hogwarts kitchen.  Such kind little conversations with the house elves.  "Hey, guys.  Thanks for coming back to another video.  Today we're making some really tasty biscuits.  Whispy, one of the talented bakers here in the kitchens, is here to help us today so please say hello to her in the comments."  He'll also always make extra and leave them in the Hufflepuff common room for everyone to enjoy.  Like, it's honestly so pure and he's such a soft boi and oh my fucking geeeeeeerrrrrrdddd!!!!!
Tumblr media
Draco: Actually takes it really seriously and put a lot of hard work into it.   Nothing like his father's ego-tistical recipes.   Surprisingly, every. single. recipe. is a muggle recipe.  How would he know?  Because he cross referenced with Granger of course.  Cooks it himself.   No magic.  Lots of random talks.  Just like a monologue of things and it gets kinda deep sometimes.   Like, it's the channel to go to when you need advice that you didn't even know that you needed.   Still eats incredibly proper.   It's that pureblood raising of his.  Old habits die hard.
Tumblr media
Tonks:  Pure chaos.  "Hey, today we're having Mum's homemade lasagna and I'm also getting a new tattoo.  Might dye my hair.  Don't really need to since I can do this  but whatever. So yeah, there's that.  Like it's just all over the place and you'd think it would take but the chaos is too good not to watch.  Literally gives herself beaks and snouts while she eats.  It's iconic.
Tumblr media
Dumbledore: Mother fucker just sits at his desk, stares straight into the camera and eats a lemon drop.  Like a weirdo.  The video usually no more than a minute and each video is just some variation of that.  Meme lord.
Tumblr media
Hagrid:  Tea With Hagrid.  Also, so the recipes suck, they too, but Hagrid is a peach and it's relaxing to see his gentle half giant there in his hut, pumpkin patch out the window and Fang laying by the fire.  It's a mood and he's just like the comforting Dad figure.
Tumblr media
McGonagall:  Honestly the best one in the entire world.  She makes a full course traditional Scottish breakfast... and then transforms into her animagus the cat...and promptly knocks it off the table.   A fucking legend.

CQL Rewatch - Episode 10
Tumblr media
Confession time: I don’t like Xue Yang. I appreciate him for all his villain-y villain-ness, but I don’t like the character. I find him kind of annoying in this series, because they just have him so over-the-top nasty all the time. He’s like a caricature of a person. Granted, I haven’t watched the Yi City arc, because, as I think I said before, I read it and once was enough. So the other thing that kind of bothers me here is that we have two villains vying for screen time: Xue Yang and Wen Chao (Wen Chao obviously gets more)—and I guess it’s a bit much. Like, it’s not enough that Wen Chao is on their heels, trying to get the Yin Iron from them, so we need to add this scene where they watch someone else fight Xue Yang. That’s another thing that’s kind of goofy. Why put Jiang Cheng, Wei Wuxian, and Lan Wangji in this scene at all when they barely do anything? Wei Wuxian uses Binding/Bonding to stop Xue Yang from getting away, but that’s the only real contribution.
Tumblr media
See? This is what they do for the first ten minutes of the episode. This could have been told to them or shown in a flashback easily. Easily. There’s other things we see in flashbacks that are arguably more important than this capturing of Xue Yang and introduction to Xiao Xingchen and Song Lan. With a lot of things, I’m like, if it was good enough in the book, then it’s good enough in CQL. At a certain point, I have to wonder if they just felt like they needed a fight scene in every episode. Director/writers were like, we gave you that scene with the chicken, now let’s get back to the action scenes! This is my personal preference, but I don’t mind being told some things, versus being shown everything. Like, it’s okay to hide some things from the audience so that they payoff is better at the time its revealed. (I will be forever bitter about how the headband meaning was revealed right away—that was such a great moment in the book, and I feel like CQL robbed the audience of that).
Tumblr media
I feel like this is the only part in the whole series where they hint at anyone being gay, and it comes in the form of Xue Yang accusing Wei Ying of touching him inappropriately (basically, I’m not going back to check the subtitles). It would have been funny for Wei Ying to kind of play along with that, but censorship (rip)—I do like his line about how no one can best him in being cheeky, though.
Tumblr media
I’ve never been happier to see Nie Huaisang, because that means we’re finally moving on to something else. Woohoo! Let’s go to Qinghe!
Tumblr media
I like here how the distinction is made between people who are in clans and people who aren’t. I also like the set-up of how WangXian is similar to Xiao Xingchen and Song Lan: we cultivate together because we have similar goals and ethics, and that they are respected doing that.
Tumblr media
And it’s interesting how Jiang Cheng says how it’s an honor to meet those two, but when Wei Wuxian says that he and Lan Wangji went on a night hunt for the same reasons, Jiang Cheng scorns them. He implies such a thing is enough to not let him back into Lotus Cove. I guess he doesn’t extend that same courtesy to Wei Wuxian, which is not surprising. I really like Jiang Cheng as a character, but he struggles with having good relationships. His interpersonal skills aren’t great. I mean, just look at him at the end—irreconcilable damage has been done to his relationship with Wei Wuxian. Can they be civil to each other? Of course! Do I think they’re really ever going to be friends and brothers again? I sincerely doubt it. And this isn’t all Jiang Cheng’s fault or anything; I think it’s mutual, and both of them parted on good terms, but the understanding is that they may never cross paths again. Honestly, that’s what I like about Jiang Cheng—I like that he’s complicated and is stubborn and his pride is important to him; I like that he’s jealous and will hold a grudge forever—that’s what makes him interesting to me. And I love the theme that choices were made, and you can’t go back to how things were. I love that this series/book shows that blood isn’t thicker than water, that sometimes it isn’t enough just to be family—that there are things that can destroy those kinds of bonds, but that that isn’t the end. You can start over—and if anyone gets to start over, it’s certainly Wei Wuxian. Went off on a tangent there, sorry.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I like how much they act like friends here. It’s just so relaxed, so intimate. Just the two of them, because all the others have walked away, including Jiang Cheng. If I didn’t know the story, I’d be wondering why it seemed like Wei Wuxian is closer to Lan Wangji than Jiang Cheng. Jiang Cheng scoffs at him, while Lan Wangji embraces Wei Wuxian’s words, and he’s only known him six months or so. It’s quite telling. I’m glad I’m rewatching this, because there are so many moments I’ve forgotten about that are really nice (I’ve watched the special edition cut about twice, and a lot is cut out, as you know).
Tumblr media
Another moment I forgot about: Wei Wuxian standing up for Xue Yang. Not, of course, because he thinks he’s a good man, but because he doesn’t think they should execute a man when they don’t have all the facts. I like the contrast between his way of thinking and Nie Mingjue’s, who is quick to anger, stressed out, and ready to take everything out on Xue Yang. It’s understandable that he wants to just end Xue Yang, considering the threats from the Wen Clan, plus word on the street is that Xue Yang murdered an entire clan, albeit a small one. Nie Mingjue is worried about his own clan, not to mention the Gusu Lan Clan, who he specifically asks about when greeting Lan Wangji. He feels the impending threat from the Wen Clan and he’s not about to take it lying down.
And then you have Wei Wuxian defending a man who in his eyes is innocent until proven guilty. Like I said earlier, I think they all know Xue Yang murdered all those people, but I do like the fact that Wei Wuxian tries to push Nie Mingjue into making a more reasonable choice: waiting until they have all the facts. It’s a nice foreshadowing of what’s to come with Wei Wuxian himself, where most people aren’t willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.
Tumblr media
Look at that smile! aldslkf
Okay, so first Lan Wangji hears something on his roof, so he grabs Bichen and prepares for a fight. Then he hears Wei Wuxian mumbling drunkenly about how the tiles are rougher in Qinghe than in Gusu, and that little smile forms on his lips. It’s so quick—blink and you’ll miss it. His expression is so soft, so warm, so gentle. Think about this—six months ago, he would have leapt on that roof to go fight Wei Wuxian, and now his reaction is this honeyed smile, reserved at this point only for Wei Wuxian. I mean, have you seen him smile for anyone else? Okay, fine—he smiled at the rabbits too. So the great Lan Wangji only smiles for bunnies and Wei Wuxian.
Tumblr media
And I think he really regrets leaving like this. They’ve built up this relationship—this rapport—with one another, and Lan Wangji ends up leaving in the night, basically without a word. Wei Wuxian is too drunk to even know he’s there (if I’m not mistaken, Wei Wuxian calls for him, thinking that’s he’s still inside). Lan Wangji doesn’t know what’s ahead—everything is uncertain: the Wen Clan has ordered all major clans to send one inner disciple to be indoctrinated immediately, there is the issue of the Yin Iron (and Lan Wangji still has a piece of it), not to mention people like Xue Yang who might be roaming around causing trouble on the Wens’ behalf. Lan Wangji is certainly fearful for his home and his people, worried about the Yin Iron going to the wrong hands, likely worried about Wei Wuxian just in general, and regretting leaving him high and dry. This is such a sad moment, and maybe it’s just me feeling that way. It always leaves me with a lump in my throat. I also think it mirrors a later scene where Lan Wangji is on the roof and Wei Wuxian is leaving.
Also that fucking wangxian.mp3 playing in the background for this whole part—of course I’m going to get emotional!
Tumblr media
Perfect response: Wasn’t me!
I mean, couldn’t have happened to a more deserving guy, though. The captain was such an asshole, and I don’t blame Jin Guangyao one bit for what he did. That man emotionally and verbally abused him I’m sure on a daily basis. Not saying that murder is the answer to your problems, but in this made-up fantasy world that is CQL/MDZS, that guy fucking deserved it.
I also like how even though Nie Mingjue is super pissed and upset by what Jin Guangyao did, he still catches him when he gets run through, and he’s absolutely torn up about banishing him. It’s pretty powerful when it cuts back to him in his idk throne room (whatever you’d call that, I know it’s not a throne room, whatever) and everything is smashed up. Like, this man is enraged. The last thing he wanted to do was banish Jin Guangyao, but he had to. He couldn’t keep a man like that around. Jin Guangyao, by murdering the captain, had lost Nie Mingjue’s trust. Not to mention, who let Xue Yang out? Was it Jin Guangyao? Nie Mingjue doesn’t know; in his mind, Jin Guangyao could have been responsible for that too.
Tumblr media
So, I actually really don’t like this. Wen Chao has already spilled the beans on the “evil Gusu Lan Clan” earlier, implying that they did, in fact, stand up to the Wens, and now he says outright that they sent forces to Gusu to burn the place to the ground. I hate that they tell us this! It’s so much better in the book when you don’t know what’s going on until Wei Wuxian finds out at the indoctrination! This is one of the most annoying things about Untamed—they spoil all the big secrets right away. In the book, the big secrets hit so much better when they’re finally revealed. It’s honestly a great feeling that the payoff is so good. Watching Untamed, I was just like, what?! Don’t tell them yet! Like the headband?! Argh!! Yes, we got that one good scene, but I would have traded that for what happens in the book (of course, the whole being tied up with the headband probably wouldn’t have made it into the tv series…). [NB: I laughed when I was reading over this again and saw that I’d already brought up the headband. Sore spot lol.]
But also, does Wei Wuxian not look worried enough here or is it just me? I feel like he should be more concerned. Even though he has the utmost confidence in Lan Wangji’s skill, he’s just one young man up against a huge force from the Wen Clan.
