Lumity (The Owl House)

I remember starting this show feeling it as the successor of Steven Universe, at least to me. We could say that at level of mistreatment from its parent company, it defenitely surpassed it, but at least I'm glad I was right and we got Luz and Amity becoming canon. I love these two and not a day passes without me yelling at Disney for what it did to them.

Bubbline (Adventure Time)

I actually watched Adventure Time fully only recently, but I always loved them even when I watched the show randomly when it appeared in tv back in the day. Getting to see the progression properly just made me love them even more.

Yasammy (Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous/Chaos Theory)

Incredibly recent addition, but I am so glad that I checked out Camp Cretaceous and got into it. It's a nice show and these two are a really cute couple, their confession and especially Yaz's internal turmoil were just so on point. I was really happy to see them go still strong in Chaos Theory, and I can't wait for next season.

Pricefield (Life is Strange)

These two caused me pain in the best possible way. I felt literal heartbreak at the Bay Ending, and I was just as emotional at the Bae one (Bae > Bay Forever) I hope the new game will respect their relationship OR ELSE.

I'm a bit confused about the difference between emotional energy and romantic tension LOL

I was having a discussion with someone about this related to MDZS and they were saying how JC and WWX had a lot of emotional energy with them serving as thematic foils to each other. Wangxian was told but not shown, which makes zero sense to me. Just because the major conflict is between two characters doesn't imply the existence of romantic feelings. I don't like misreading emotional energy as subtext because that never works out well especially if the author doesn't have the time to develop romance.

It kinda reminds me of the ATLA shipping war, which I didn't care for. I feel like you and your moots gave a good grasp of themes and characters, so I'm hoping you can explain this to me.

If I’m getting this right, you want 1) to know the difference (if there is one) between emotional energy and romantic tension, and 2) what the difference between chengxian and wangxian is, possibly with a discussion of subtext. I’ll answer these questions cause my brain is a little muddled at the moment.

So first up: emotional energy vs. romantic tension. For one, I’ve never heard of “emotional energy” before lmao, but on that note, emotional energy can be literally anything. You have emotional energy towards a parent that you love, or the really strict teacher whose voice you still hear criticism in, or that one asshole from your job you wish would get fired. None of that inherently opens the door to romance, and most people would balk at thinking of any of these relationships as romantic just because they’re relationships in which intense feelings are felt. Saying that feeling any intense emotion towards someone in which you are in a platonic relationship with = harboring (known or unrecognized) romantic feelings for them is ridiculous bullshit.

Now onto Wangxian vs. Chengxian. Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng have “emotional energy” because they are stuck in a relationship forged by Jiang Fengmian’s wish for his son to have a friend and maintained by the multitude of debts that the Jiang Clan pile on him via jfm and Madam Yu. However, a lot of these feelings are one-sided. Jiang Cheng feels inferiority, envy, and later on, hatred towards Wei Wuxian. Wei Wuxian in his first life felt a bond with Jiang Cheng that he seemed to feel for all his martial siblings: a bond of those learning under the same clan/sect. Later, that bond is replaced with debt, and in his second life, wwx only has mild pity left for jc. They mutually choose not to rekindle any relationship at the end, either negative or positive. Notice how none of these feelings are romantic. To say that Wei Wuxian harbors romantic feelings for Jiang Cheng is like someone saying you harbor romantic feelings for your childhood bully who you were forced to spend time with because his parents guilted you into being his only friend. Likewise, to say that Jiang Cheng harbors romantic feelings for Wei Wuxian is like someone saying you harbor a crush on the one kid that your mom always compared you to and said you’d never be as good as. Also that they may be your secret half-sibling and the reason your parents hate each other and your dad hates you, specifically. Also, jc is a canonical homophobe, so… For Chengxian, people can ship it all they want, but it is purely fanon not supported by any adaptation. Not every emotion is innately tied to love or romance, and throwing “subtext” around doesn’t give you legitimacy. Subtext is when a creator can’t or won’t explicitly name the thing but they drop enough clues for people to piece it together, anyways. Bubbline from Adventure Time is subtext for most of the show; we literally see then go on dates and blush around each other, but we only see them kiss in the finale and be a couple in the post-canon specials. The definition of “subtext” is not “these characters have a relationship, therefore I ship them romantically regardless of what the source material says about them.”

In the case of Wangxian, though, this is not subtext and is explicitly romantic. Wei Wuxian constantly thinks of Lan Wangji as the most beautiful man he’s ever met. He constantly wants his attention and to be in his presence as a teen. He daydreams about living with Lan Wangji on a little farm. In his second life, he actively flirts with the man, even after his cover is blown, and he is the one to kiss Lan Wangji during drunk shenanigans #2 and tip the boundary into having sex in drunk shenanigans #3. We don’t get a lot of Lan Wangji’s thoughts from wwx’s first life as it happens, but we see later that he always tried to stick up for wwx, kept everything wwx ever gave him (most of which were just offhanded objects wwx only used to tease him), he adopted the other man’s son. He tells his brother that he wants to bring wwx home to hide him in the exact mimicry of his parents most definitely not platonic relationship. None of this is platonic, none of it is subtext, and none of this is “only told.”

In short, tell whoever it is you were talking to—if you’re even still talking to them at all—that they don’t need to justify shipping by pretending that there’s proof of it being canon. We’d get a lot farther in these discussions if people just accepted that they like certain relationship dynamics over others instead of twisting a source to legitimize their likes/dislikes. Chengxian is not canon, was never meant to be canon and therefore will never be canon. Wangxian is the couple the book is written about. Don’t like the wangxian couple, don’t read the wangxian book.

A ship tier list I didn't bother finish visualizing and some of them will be discussed in depth because I want to.

Changed My Life refers to the ships with the most impact on me emotionally. Like make me cry because the writing's just that good. DabiHawks isn't even canon but I need to say that a lot of its authors are the best. 😌 The reason they're at the top is for their range of interpretations. While I have a preference for Childhood Friends AUs, the best include Enemies to Lovers and Post-war Healing fics.

InuKag is a staple of the romance anime genre. They're just the right blend of sweet and angsty. They have a dynamic consisting of Hero/Damsel in Distress, Battle Couple, Team Dad/Mom, Jaded/Sunshine. Any other dynamic would become OOC or even toxic. Like say if Inuyasha or Kagome were more verbally and physically aggressive. (Yes this is shade towards the anime's version of Kagome.)

Now Band-do/Jin-joo is the most grounded and realistic of the three. InuKag and DabiHawks are fantastic and dramatic but the writing for these two is too good to ignore.

CUTE!!! is for the ships that make me go 😍🥰 but not much else. Sure, Soukoku, Jaspvid, Bubbline, Stolitz, Fizzie and Blizz (Blitzo x Fizz) have that Childhood Friends or We Have History appeal, I already see more of that in DabiHawks writing and if only it was canon, I'd ascend. 😭

Okay is just the ships I think are alright but I'm not absolutely swooning over, looking art and fics for. I did briefly for Marin/Gojou and Urabe/Akira but that was it.

Hm, Why? is just my automatic shipper brain activating when I was in those fandoms. Nothing ground-breaking. Some might even say, questionable. 🤷‍♀

Fix It and I'll Consider are those ships that I want to enjoy because I know it was ruining aspects of the films. Thankfully, Blizz handles the We Were Tricked and Now We Hate Each Other trope than InuKik because there's no doubt that those two were super close but still had a basis of why they'd think to resent each other. Inuyasha and Kikyou are shallow and so "tragic" I couldn't take them seriously. Kikyou's character and her relationship with Inuyasha also have this unfortunate problem of tell, don't show where the show tells us they have a deep bond then goes to show how lonely and desperate they were and how okay Kikyou was with putting Inuyasha in danger (even post-resurrection).

Haruki/Sakura during the first half of the movie wasn't cute. I didn't find her endearing. She'd be weird and creepy if she was a guy, I don't care if she basically told the guy she was gonna die in a few years. My suspension of disbelief isn't that big for a film grounded in reality.

Probably "No Future,Not For You". Most of my others have happy endings or at least bittersweet but this one is the only one that is 100% all angst no comfort. It's short but it's brutal.

I don't publish WIPs before they're done because I don't wanna leave people unsatisfied. However, I do have a lot of half written fics on my computer that I completely gave up on.

16.What are your writing strengths?

I think I'm good at capturing the characters's escence and doing their dialogue in character and accurate to their canon personalities. It's very important to me that the characters feel like themselves.

17.What are your writing weaknesses?

Probably that I get stuck too much. Like unless I'm on a writing roll, I will sometimes just get stuck and not know how to continue a fic for days.

18.Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

I've only done it a little bit, on some Owl House fics when Luz or other characters are speaking Spanish. It's easy because Spanish is my first language. Idk how I would go about it if it was another language tbh.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

On AO3? The Owl House. In general? My Little Pony probably.

20.Favourite fic you've ever written?

Definitely "I'm working on a song, it isn't finished yet." "Terrified Grom Hags" might be a close second tho.

On Twitter there are polls to elect the best wlw ship, and I couldn't help but notice the snide remarks about RWBY and Bumbleby. I can understand misogynistic and homophobic men shitting on the show, but queer people? Why? Aren't we on the same side? Why are you insulting bmblb???

Yeah, I've seen it and honestly, the whole thing is both sad and hilarious. Bumbleby, Catradora, Bubbline, Lumity, Damie, Korrasami, Xena/Gabrielle-- I'm literally a fan of most of the ships in that poll. People attacking one ship or another are fucking stupid, because they're all great and important in their own ways. This poll thing is supposed to be fun and people are taking it too personal.

Now, people attacking RWBY and Bumbleby over this is sad as well, because they probably haven't watched the show and are going with just what they've heard from haters. Because if you are queer and you actually watch the show, then you know that Bumbleby is going to be canon and CRWBY's not baiting anyone. They have canonical romantic feelings towards one another. It is clear that they are going to be a couple, they simply are taking their time to develop them. It's called a slowburn for a reason, guys.

People talking about the lack of rep in this show is also kind of hilarious. Blake is canonically bisexual, Yang is canonically sapphic as well and, like I said, it's clear that they are going to be a couple. Ilia is also a lesbian. Saphron and Terra are both sapphic. Coco is a lesbian, too. Scarlet and Nolan are gay. And of course, we have May Marigold, who is canonically a transgender woman, and Shion, a non-binary character. And more queer-coded characters.

You can argue that Coco, Nolan and Scarlet being gay is only mentioned on side content, like RWBY Chibi or the novels. Or that Shion is only part of Ice Queendom. But even if you don't want to count them because of that—even if the first three are probably gonna be mentioned next volume, all of them being in Vacuo and all—, the main show still includes five canon sapphic characters (2 of them, 2/4 of the protagonists) and a trans character.

And no “they are implied, not explicit, so homophobes can still watch the show” bullshit, like I've seen some people say. Blake and Yang having feelings for each other is not implied, it's a fact; even other characters, like Nora, say so: it's pretty explicit. Ilia, a girl, confesses to Blake, another girl, that she used to be in love with her. Saphron—who is based of fucking Sappho—and Terra are quite literally married, call each other “my wife” on-screen, and have a child together. And May quite literally, explicitely says she's trans on-screen as well.

Could the show have more MLM rep? Absolutely, and the writers themselves have said they want to include more. But criticizing RWBY for “lack of rep” is proof that you either don't watch the show or you're stupid, because RWBY has more canon queer representation than most mainstream shows.

Sorry about not asking first. But anyway, like your Entrapa ask post, what are the things you can say about PB (fun fact, favorite thing you like about her , etc) 😉

Hi!!!! Of course I'll answer for Best Character Ever.

My favorite thing about them

It's how sensitive she is.

Bubblegum didn't start out as a tyrant, and at her heart, she is a very loving, affectionate character. But she was born in utterly dire circumstances, and had to take a hard road with nobody to support her.

Bubblegum faced heartbreak again and again, looking after her dependant dragon brother in the apocalypse, surviving against raiders, then with her family that turned against her, then with her friend Shoko who betrayed her and died in acid and she felt guilty over for a long time, then with Marceline who hated the person PB was becoming - a cold and snappy, stressed out leader = and broke her heart in front of an entire kingdom.

Through that, PB still feels a lot of stuff. It's no wonder her tshirt from Marceline, imbued with all of her residual and pushed-down feelings, is the most powerful magical item in all of Ooo.

My least favorite thing about them

PB is an interesting character, but like I said with Glimmer before, sometimes PB acts like such an asshole that it feels like the show went too far? Take season 5 and season 6, spying on everyone, letting James die because she could clone him, not seeming to care about the Lemongrabs. I think they should have made her seem a bit less evil than they did.

My favorite canon relationship

It's so fun watching her and Marceline roll off of each other when they're together, especially in eps like Broke His Crown, which has PB at her very best and a nice, sassy Marceline by her side. Also Bubbline was my first gay ship and I love it forever.

My favorite non-canon relationship

PB and Simon Petrikov would be an interesting duo, wouldn't you think?

The sexuality I headcanon for them

I see PB as a lesbian. I think half the writing team does too. Though this is tricky because, especially in earlier seasons, there is evidence of bi PB. And I am bi, and would support bi PB. But I dont want to use her kissing Finn as that evidence. What a terrible ship.

What I’d do if I could spend the day with them

I really, REALLY want to try out that "soul projector" from the episode You Made Me.

Random fact about them I like

PB has more outfits than almost any animated character in existence. I think I counted up to... was it 109? If that's the case it'll be 110 after Wizard City!!!

Interview with Half Shy (the songwriter of “Monster”)

For the last few months, I’ve been collecting information for a second edition of Exploring the Land of Ooo that will also cover the production of Distant Lands. This means that I’ve started to look into the new songs that we have been graced with this year, and this of course includes “Monster,” the beautiful track from the masterpiece that is “Obsidian”. And so I reached out to the song’s writer, Half Shy, who was kind enough to chat with me via email about the songwriting process!

In many ways, Half Shy is living the creative Adventure Time fan’s dream: She got asked by Adam Muto himself to write a song for “Obsidian” after he heard her music through Bandcamp! (I’ve dabbled in fan music before, and the fact that someone from the show might listen to it just blows my mind.) What an opportunity; I am so excited for her!

Since a second edition of my book won’t be coming out until after all the Distant Lands episodes air, I thought it would be best to share my Half Shy interview now. Read on for the fascinating behind the scenes story of how Half Shy and “Monster” came to be..

GunterFan: What is your origin story? How did you get involved in music, and how did the Half Shy project come to be?

Half Shy: I’ve been making music pretty quietly since I was in high school with a keyboard and guitar. I played one or two shows a year after college when I could find a friend or my brother to get up on stage with me, but I don’t really have that performer gene in me naturally. I get too much in my head and forget what the lyrics are to the song I wrote, or what the next chord is. Total brain freeze. So that whole experience is a bit of a mental drain. It’s something I think I’d like to dig into and figure out, but right now I’m really enjoying the time writing.

Even playing a song for my friends I still get pretty nervous. That’s where the name Half Shy comes from. I’ve always been interested in making things that by their nature draw a bit of a spotlight, but at the same time, I am just really quite nervous about the attention.

I recorded my first songs under my old name Hey V Kay in my bedroom and started putting them up online one at a time. When I got enough I thought about packaging it up into an album, but then got really distracted by learning how to fix up motorcycles and going to automotive tech school. When I eventually got back around to it I named the album Gut Wrenching.

After a few years I realized that I didn’t want the day-in-day-out life of a mechanic, I just wanted to know how to fix cars for myself and to have that knowledge in my back pocket. I got back into making music but grew frustrated at the process of writing and recording songs. I felt like I wasn’t able to capture the ideas I had in my head. Like trying to draw on your computer with a mouse. Doable, but it’s not going to come out like you’d hoped.

So these last couple of years I’ve focused more on learning the technical aspect of it, from the initial ideas and lyrics, to the recording and mixing. During that process I put out Bedroom Visionaries, and while writing I happened upon the name Half Shy in an old Thesaurus which felt instantly right. Learning all of that has been fun, I even went as far as to create my own book to solidify a daily writing routine (lyricworkbook.com). All that has been a bit of a tangent from actually making much music though. I should be getting my books in December from the press so I’m really looking forward to getting back into making more music instead of dealing with printing presses, setting up websites, and sourcing ribbon suppliers.

GF: What is the story behind "Monster"? How did the show get in contact with you?

HS: I keep a log of “Song Starters” with neat things I’ve heard in the world, and I would look through it every now and then and notice just how many came from Adventure Time. Eventually I thought well, I have to make a song about this show that just keeps breaking my heart. It was around the time I was nearly done with the first [Adventure Time-inspired] song “In My Element” that I got an email from Bandcamp saying “someone bought your album (Bedroom Visionaries).”

I get maybe one or two of these a month at most so I love to go in and say hi to the person and say thanks, be curious about who they are, [and] what they’re all about. Turns out it was Adam Muto, the executive producer of the show. (I asked and he has no idea how he happened upon my stuff. He guessed that I must have tagged something #adventuretime and he just happened to see it.) So I sent him an email saying, “Hey wow thanks for checking out my tunes. Also... holy crap you’ve made the best show I have ever seen in my life.” [I] played it real cool like. After finishing up writing my second [Adventure Time-inspired] song “Betty” I couldn’t help but fangirl real hard [and I sent him another message saying], “I’m sorry this is probably awkward, but I really love your show and I wrote these songs about it.” He was incredibly kind and shared them with his Twitter Universe, and a while after that I got a random email from him saying basically, “Hey, I’m working on this thing I can’t talk about, would you be interested?” I was like… well you know I’m pretty busy working at a sign shop so I’m gonna have to pass on this once in a lifetime opportunity (J/K. Obviously I fan-girl squealed and said yes immediately).

We chatted a bit about what the project was going to be and the direction. He mentioned there [would be] two Marceline songs in the special, [and he asked if I] would I be interested in giving the love song a try? Trying real hard to suppress my instant imposter syndrome I was like, “Yea, totally I’d be into giving that a shot!” So I read through the story and loved the idea of the dragon mirrored in Marceline, thinking through how they’ve both built up a protective shell, how she grew tough for a reason, but now she can open up and be vulnerable with PB.

From there I wrote the initial demo with the first two verses mostly intact and we went back and forth a few times editing it down into the final version. I recorded the final parts for the show in my little home studio in Seattle.

GS: When you were writing the song, what emotions, thoughts, or ideas were you channeling? Was there any sort of memory of event that you were trying to artistically "catch" or "recreate" with the lyrics or music?

HS: As far as channeling an emotion, generally I’d say just the experience of existing as a human. It can be so hard to open up and be vulnerable. I can remember that feeling even as a young kid—getting really excited about something and having someone completely trash it or look at you like, “Why are you so interested in that? It’s dumb.” [It causes us to grow] a little more weary to share ourselves because we know that hurt and embarrassment. The pain of being misunderstood is something I think a lot of us can relate to. Then having to decide whether to keep sharing those vulnerable parts of yourself or think, “They’re just not going to get it, I’m going to get hurt, so why bother?” and then stop putting yourself out there. You lose a lot with that thick armor though. You might feel protected, but you’re not feeling a whole lot of anything else other than the weight and chafing of it (I had a whole lot of armor-related metaphors that I didn't end up using.).

I struggle with this in songwriting too. I’m not the bolt-of-lightning type. There are pages and pages of cliches, total garbage, bad jokes, and cheesy lines that I have to get through in order to get to something that I am excited to put out there into the world: “Here I did this thing, I know it’s a little (this or that), but I made it... What do you think?” It’s hard to open yourself up to hearing the other end of that question.

I filled about 5 little pocket notebooks just thinking through the story, ideas, and trying to get this song right. I wanted it to feel familiar and honor the past songs of the show ([e.g.,] using the ukulele and referencing a few of the familiar chords from “I’m Just Your Problem”) but also be pretty open and vulnerable and different for [Marceline]. [I wanted to] show that she’s going through some tough emotions but also figuring herself out and growing.

GF: I feel like “Monster” is, at its core, an ode to the “Bubbline” ship. How do you feel about your song being intimately connected to one of the most famous LGBTQ+ relationships in animation? Do you have any general thoughts on Marcy and PB, Bubbline, etc.?

HS: Oh, I’m a total fan girl of Bubbline. The whole story of how Rebecca Sugar and Muto slowly morphed it into this deeper relationship is just great. As a part of the LGBTQ community myself it really means so much to see the representation of characters like yourself portrayed in an intelligent way. Growing up I was too young to fully understand what was going on but I saw Ellen getting cancelled, and [I] heard people around me saying they’d never watch her show again after she came out. That stuff sinks in as a kid and so to have these characters who are not only intelligent, but funny, complex, and unapologetically strong who also happen to be queer is really great. I love that the story here isn’t about their orientation, but that they’re people struggling with how to be open and vulnerable in a relationship.

It feels like something sci-fi and animated shows do so well—to show that ridiculousness of limiting who a person should and shouldn’t love. Marceline is a 1000+ year old half-demon/vampire and PB was born from the Mothergum of an apocalyptic radioactive world, but you’re going to get hung up on them loving each other? It sort of brings it into perspective in a really interesting way.

GF: Do you have any other thoughts about the experience that you'd like to share?

HS: Just how lucky, thankful, and honored I feel to be a part of my favorite show, writing a song for one of my favorite characters. It’s also incredibly cool how the people on the show are so willing to connect and collaborate with their fandom. Everyone [on the production crew] was very open and a real joy to work with.
