okay so mapping this stuff out actually makes it even more depressing

Saw a bookmark note on Broken Ground this morning about the healing-magic worldbuilding I included in there about elemental specialties, which draws from my running headcanon on the same subject, and I don't think I've written that down before? And I am procrastinating on work right now, so. XD My personal headcanons on how elements line up with Vision healing!

First of all, any element can be used for any kind of injury in a desperate pinch. But there are some that are better for certain kinds of issues, or worse, or in a few cases downright disastrous; with the last, what you're aiming for is to forcibly use the magic to keep the patient alive until you can get them to a healer better-suited. And there is a severity of injury or illness that can only be handled, at that point of crisis, by a certain element, wielded by a very skilled healer, and most healers, either without that skill or without that element, would simply consider them already lost.

(The last is what Barbara dealt with in Broken Ground! Barbara thinks that Anemo couldn't have saved Jean, and she's right; only her level of skill with Hydro and blood control, or an Electro user with the skills and/or training to do defibrillation, would have done it. Conversely, depending on the cause of the respiratory arrest, Barbara is right that Jean would have a better chance of restarting that person's breathing before permanent damage occurred.)

Now, moving on to elemental specifics. I'm applying these mostly to Vision-using healers, but I tend to also headcanon that they apply to a lesser degree to herbal remedies, as we get suggestions already in canon that a lot of those plants and other items have at least faint elemental affinities.

Anemo: Best for handling respiratory and pulmonary issues, obviously, though there's some things (edema or inflammation) that would be best handled in conjunction with another element. I think of Anemo healing as "generalist," in that it can do most things reasonably well but not as well as a specialist, except the aforementioned, and doesn't do much badly except bones. Anemo bone-healing, especially if it's extensive, tends to leave them somewhat brittle if it isn't followed up by later Geo treatments. When you have damage caused by an elemental source (e.g. monster attack), you do have to be a bit careful with Anemo because at times it will Swirl any remaining elemental traces left on the wound.

Geo: Best for bones! Which, after all, contain a lot of calcium, which is a mineral. Other than that, it is, like Anemo, "generalist" in much the same way, and in the opposite direction can't do as good a job on respiratory stuff in particular. Its elemental inertness does remove the Swirl problem--Crystalizing an elemental influence out of someone is usually helpful rather than the reverse--but because of that Crystallization, it can occasionally render more elementally charged medicines inert. Which is helpful if intended but inconvenient to dangerous if unintended. The activated-charcoal Vision!

Hydro: Canonically seems to be the healing element, and that's reflected in how much it's particularly good at. Do you know how much of your body is water? Do you know how much your various internal fluids affect? Almost everything. Obviously it's particularly good for blood and kidney issues, and a well-trained Hydro healer is also what you want for most illnesses and infections and all toxins, which they can pretty much almost filter straight out of the affected area and then the blood entirely. While there are specific areas in which well-trained specialists of other elements may outperform the well-trained Hydro healer, there are none in which they're particularly bad. A poorly-trained Hydro healer can have some Hydro-specific issues, mind--you want one who knows what they're doing to treat, say, edema or hypertension--but in general they're still the ideal field medic, first responder, etc.

Electro: Particularly useful for the nervous system and muscles. As mentioned above, one with the right skills and/or training can defibrillate. Ones without those skills and/or training should not, unless there's no one else around to make the attempt, and in fact that's a theme for Electro healers. A lot of the things that Electro specialists are good at are super easy to fuck up, in ways that can disable or kill someone, without enough training and skill, so a lot of Electro healers stick to basic generalist field-medicine stuff that any healer can do, like closing wounds, instead of chasing their supposed specialty. I also like to think that Electro healers tend to be particularly good at 'imaging' the internals of the body.

Pyro: There is honestly more stuff I see Pyro being particularly bad at than particularly good at! You do not want a Pyro healer for burns or severe inflammation, and those who can handle illness and internal infection generally do so by inducing a fever and using the body's own processes to burn it out, which can work well if that's something that can be solved that way, but can also go... not well. That said, they're good at more gently burning out external infection in, say, open wounds, and fantastic for hypothermia or frostbite. Pyro healing is, logically, also great for heat therapy, and Pyro healers make very good massage therapists.

Cryo: Right out of the gate, Cryo is the top-tier treatment for inflammation and dangerous fevers, and up there alongside Hydro on burns. It's great for numbing, likewise, and overall Cryo healers are great as front-line first-responders for most types of injury because they can slow what would normally be catastrophic processes down to give more time for overall treatment (justifying why we have so many Cryo healers in-game). You obviously don't want them for frostbite or hypothermia, but otherwise, that ability to slow down potentially dangerous physical processes is a huge boost in general--even if they aren't better than other generalists at other element-specific stuff, they can buy time, with severe issues, to get a specialist in or to figure out non-magical treatments.

Dendro: Like Hydro, rather "generalist," and with a well-trained healer it doesn't do anything badly at all. "Well-trained" is a key term here, as with Electro, Dendro can do unintended damage when not used properly, because its main effect that makes it such a good generalist element is that it conjoins very well with medicinal healing, and, you know, the dose makes the poison. But even when not used directly in conjunction with medicines, Dendro has an overall "vitalizing" effect that can boost the immune system and raise energy levels, which (bar autoimmune disorders) is usually helpful, so it's particularly good with illness and infection, as well. I also tend to think Dendro healing is particularly good for gastrointestinal issues.

Hi!! This has been sitting in my inbox for more than a month, which I am SO SORRY ABOUT! Stuff has been all over the place and trying to find work in the past week or so has been a freaking NIGHTMARE so a lot is on my plate in the mental area right now but realistically that's not much of an excuse so again, I am so sorry it's taken me this long!

I'm not the greatest at writing coming out scenes (I can't think of one of my characters who, even if they've been in a straight presenting relationship, has not been queer in some way since I started writing, which makes that sentence ironic) but I did my best with the several I've written/explained here! As is evident by the title, I wrote this out as headcanons, which I hope is okay! Also didn't include logan (watched like, an hour of jigsaw?? maybe?? hated it. hated him. respectfully) which I hope is all right.

You probably just like--I feel like coming out to them individually is the way to go because if you do it with all of them present it'll kind of be like--it'll--something will feel a little bit off because there's some animosity between Amanda and Mark and their reactions will have some variation. Plus, it's just easier anyway because, while you are with them individually a lot of the time, the four of you are together very, very rarely, and typically only when John asks you all to be somewhere at the same time.

So you come out to Amanda first and she takes it REALLY, REALLY WELL!!

The first thing that she does is offer you one of the guys sweaters she keeps in the back of her closet--they're baggy, warm and typically what she'll wear in winter because jersey gets cold during the season.

She also asks you what your preferred name and pronouns are and then takes to them like she's snapped her fingers and your birth name and previous pronouns have left her memory. She is really, really sweet about it and so understanding--as far as the apprentices go, I feel like she reacts the best and handles it the best because she IS queer and has queer friends so she gets it to an extent.

Lawrence and Amandas reactions are similar! He mentions he has a couple of shirts and sweaters and stuff that he doesn't really wear anymore and offers them to you while also asking if you want coffee or tea because you decided to come out while he was just at home (you're working in--idk,, pharmaceuticals?? and so you work close by anyway and Lawrence also wants your opinion on trap stuff so hey! Your meeting has two purposes!)

and then he asks you what your preferred name and pronouns are and takes to them pretty quickly! Once you've left with coffee in a to-go mug and several shirts, sweatpants, hoodies and cardigans and just--clothes that Lawrence doesn't wear anymore that either already fit or can be altered so that they do, Lawrence practices so that he makes sure not to fuck it up because he knows that you're having told him about how you identify is really important and a really special kind of thing and the idea of messing up by calling you the name you used to go by or using the pronouns that make you dysphoric makes him feel terrible right out the gate.

Hoffman has the attitude of someone who's like,, super chill about that kind of thing! again, queer himself (you cannot tell me that he and strahm were not fucking on the DL. I refuse to believe otherwise) and very understanding about how difficult coming out can be.

He asks you what your preferred name and pronouns are and takes to them fairly quickly! He messes up like, once?? twice maybe before he's like "I need to practice using the name and pronouns because fucking it up is not needed--dysphoria seems like it sucks and I don't want him to be dysphoric because of me." so then he practices it mentally while he's working and kind of like,, under his breath while he sets traps up and has it down within that week.

Also gets you a checkerboard cake that has three layers and has the trans flag colors because he feels bad about the times he messed your pronouns up. You absolutely devoured that cake after a really tough day and it was delicious (he got strahm to bake it because as much as I love him, I do not think he could bake a cake without burning it)

All in all, their reactions are different but they do love you and they make sure that you know that.

5. What do you wish someone would ask you about [insert fic]? Answer it now! (don't you dare go down)

"Hey, Iz, you frequently list don't you dare go down as your favorite fic you've written, even though it's years old at this point. Why?"

I'm really proud of this fic for several reasons: I overall still really like the writing, people consistently compliment my favorite lines on it so it makes me confident I got across what I wanted to say, it covers some of my favorite te'ijalahad concepts.

I love this fic because, more than any fic I've written, it's essentially distilled headcanons. I knew, for years, that I wanted to write a fic about Te'ijal patching up Galahad after the fight where he got the scar across his eye, and a fic about Galahad reflecting on Te'ijal after the tower scene. I came up with the idea of Te'ijal getting scarred from the tower scene and realized I had the opportunity to put it in a fic. I kept thinking up ideas about Te'ijal helping Galahad with his injuries, and then about him always wearing armor and how that reflects on his (dis)comfort with her. I love the genre of te'ijalahad fic that's understated improvement in their relationship simply through the contrast of how it used to be and how it is now. And I got to include all of that in this fic!! I love it, and it means that people reading it are essentially listening to me ramble about a lot of my favorite ideas for my favorite characters.

12. Are there any tropes you used to dislike but have grown on you?

I answered meta already - but I'm blanking on others, honestly. I feel like trope-wise my tastes have narrowed, but more generally they've broadened and I like reading about more characters/ships/headcanons than I used to.

15. What’s your favorite AU that you’ve written?

"AU" is a hard genre for this question actually. If we mean strictly alternative universe, I've only ever written one, which wins by default: left undead.

If we expand it to "canon divergence", then my favorite AU I've written is one I never cleaned up or, uh, finished well enough to post, called only "stella kills gyendal AU". I don't think I'll ever end up finishing it, but mostly because I think I'm going to end up mixing it into my TDP rewrite!

24. Are there any easter eggs in [insert fic], and if so, what are they? (now we're two of a crime)

okay this does not have any easter eggs but while rereading it to confirm that i jumpscared myself with myst referring to banana boy, so i guess it's a reverse easter egg LMAO

36. Do you visualize what you read/write?

I genuinely have no idea how to answer this question. I think I do, but my visualization is so clipped and vague that calling it that doesn't feel fully accurate. I have to make a point to visualize when I'm writing, but I do make that point a lot.

42. Have you ever received a comment that particularly stood out to you for whatever reason?

I've had comments on both ill-conceived and you try so loud to love me that feel too personal to repeat here, generally stuff where my fic really resonated with someone or made them rethink something, and that feeling is maybe the best feeling I've ever had as a result of writing.

I work two jobs, I work 70+ hours a week and yet i still try to churn out the work for you guys and lately it's been a HUGE struggle and not cause of the writing...

i've had hurtful and rude comments on work that i've deleted, some i've left but having people complaining about my tags, about the fact i've included other characters in a story, or complaining about my headcanons... MY FUCKING HEADCANONS... like for fuck sake...

I try to make my tags as clear as possible, i like to include characters that i know and write something I wanna write and create. Yes fair enough if you've asked for a prompt and i've randomly thrown in another character you weren't expecting then by all means, fucking call me out, but my big stories, they're MY stories, they were written for me and if you want to read them, expect to see my faves appearing, having an important role.

so i am a big big fan of marine life and of bnha so your mermaid au with aizawa,shinso, and eri (aizawa is literally my fave in the whole show) makes my heart go doki and it has given me the urge to write a fanfic about them (even tho I'm already working on 2 others-) if you don't already have a written fanfic for this would it be ok if I did it? I don’t have a lot of headcanons at the moment, they tend to either be inspired by an ask or just shoot into my brain at random so I’m not too sure what I can tell you right now? Ah, I thought about including midnight as a mer, but I don’t know which fishy I should use as her base - but I think I want her to be a wandering-fish-lady :D

Shinsou really likes human-music but doesn’t tell anybody. Also, he likes stargazing but hasn’t had anyone watching his back when he does it so he only gives the sky small glimpses every now and then. Kaminari is another worker at the aquarium and he reminds Shinsou so much of the yellow fishies surrounding his cave that he smirks every time he sees him (which makes Kaminari suuuper nervous/suspicious).

Eri reeeally loves sweets and begs for them constantly and starts chirping if she doesn't get them - a distress noise that agitates Aizawa as soon as he gets in earshot. And because humans can’t hear it, he gives his quiet child permission to loudly wail anytime she wants to. If Aizawa is going to suffer, so are the humans. Cut to a very confused Hizashi, cradling a little screaming mermaid in his arms, sweating bullets because last time Aizawa almost snapped his head off for making her wail like that. In the end, she gets her sweets.

Aizawa is not a very confrontational kind of shark and usually, if he’s startled, agitated or just poked wrong, he gives pretty clear warnings (splashing, circling, bites and scratches). The only exception is Toshinori. He just doesn’t like the big dude and is ready to throw down every time he sees him - which is often, considering Toshinori is basically Izukus shadow. Toshinori invests into a very good, shark-proof swimsuit pretty fast - and gets one for Izuku, too.

Uhm, I guess that’s it for the moment?

I know that if/when I’m gonna write this, it’ll end up splotchy like my imprint au - which means random one-shots to random situations based on a very very loose plot so If you can make something cohesive out of this, then please go nuts! :’D

Saw you've been sucked into the MMO life in the form of FFXIV and I was wondering if you had any input into the debate I've been having about what class archetypes tfw would play. I think Sam would be most likely to tank because it requires a reasonable amount of leadership and is also more of a quiet, backbone type role compared to dps. Dean seems more the type to be singularly focused on the big damage hits tbh. He also tends to take more of the charging in and fighting role in their normal life with Sam being the one reading up on everything more carefully and being his backup. Which leaves Cas as healer which may just be me projecting because I play healer/support at every opportunity but literal angel healing aside I think that sorta fits too, he cares a lot for them and tries to keep them safe and shield them as best he can in their adventures? Idk half formed thoughts please completely contradict me if you want I'm genuinely curious about other people's opinions here

If you’d asked me back when I was a WoW player I’d have fully agreed because you could only have one class per character and these are definitely the snap decisions that the fam would make when on the character screen. Dean would grab the sexiest DPS, Sam the stoutest tank especially as he’s the one who has read into the classes and strats beforehand, and Cas would ask what to do and be given the healer role because the other two in this scenario would know better about the game and sort of lump it onto him like, oh, we need a healer and you can do this.

(In my own gaming journey, this is what my friends and brother did to me, as they needed a healer to round out their party... I took druid because it was spoopy, and discovered in WoW that while you can’t change classes you can pay gold to respec your character’s role within that class... Promptly re-specced to a melee dps/tank feral druid instead of the healer one, and had a lot more fun :D)  

In FFXIV you can take all the classes on your character (which I have done, natch) and it’s a much more interesting levelling approach, especially seeing how my friends playing the game have gone when it comes to taking classes as they level and why they claim to have tried and then rejected others. It’s an enormous personality test, even for peeps like me and my brother who have all the classes up at max level, which ones we prioritised and which ones we sort of struggled with or found a bit meh. 

Hm so in the scenario that Charlie comes bursting into the Bunker demanding that she needs some friends for dungeons and raids and they’re all sitting on their asses scrolling the internet between a case, they can bloody well play final fantasy with her for a bit, let’s go for some headcanons :D Long because FFXIV has become my current obsession and I have the same in-depth feels about it as I do about SPN but I just never get to write about them with anyone... 

First off, Sam of course has deep nerdery about it and will ask Charlie a ton of questions about what the right class to play is and do the same thing as we’ve already discussed and go for Paladin (which starts as gladiator), and also take all the crafting and gathering side classes because he’s a nerd and you learn nonsense lore while doing it. He’s also in the same starting zone as Thaumaturge which transitions to Black Mage and I BET he’d be tempted to have a little safe witch!Sam emotional release on the most un-Sam class. It’s the big unwieldy spell caster whose literal class quests and stuff make fun of how you’re small and squishy and will be standing in a very bad spot debating whether to finish a long-cast spell and get hit or stop DPS and run for safety. I think he could do with the perspective and learning to be selfish either way to blow off steam from tanking and also learn to prioritise himself IRL :’D Also the paladin quest is WEIRDLY pro-cop from 30 onwards for some reason until the writers saw sense and just. stopped. doing paladin stuff and went back to the Gladiator storyline for the class quests, so idk if he’d enjoy that or start to question other things. Whatever it is he’s getting challenged XD

At 60 he grabs Gunbreaker because it sounds more cool and is thankfully way less emotionally stressful tanking as it’s entirely about being a badass bodyguard and sick flips. This is far more aspirational for Sam, especially as he could just tie a knife to a sawn off shotgun and do these moves for real in his day job. He won’t, but like with black mage, the thought that he COULD is very emotionally satisfying to him.

He might also have decided to check out scholar to see how healing is but idk if he would be able to handle Dean teasing him for having a fairy follow him around so he’d only dabble with the nerd class on the side :P  

Now, Dean can’t take ninja until level 10 or machinist (gun shooty DPS class) until 50, so his start point as DPS would either be pugilist (eeeey brass knuckle class!) or the other DPS classes to start with are Thaumaturge/Black Mage, Arcanist/Summoner, Archer or Lancer. Now. He’d probably think the first two are sissy because magic is for girls/arcanists literally only have a book as a weapon. Archer becomes bard and I think is ultimately a place he’d be very happy as it is a very supportive class to the whole party and basically the mom friend class. But I would love if he went lancer/dragoon because the level 50 class weapon is (folklore inspired name) “Gae Bolg” and every time I equip it I can’t help giggling at the name even though I know it’s a real thing and I shouldn’t. But. Like. It’s the class about waving enormous lances around. It’s got Implications, and Dean is drawn to those. 

He’d probably, however, take rogue/ninja as soon as he could because stabbing things with knives, and the class trainer is the kinda guy who’d have wild gay tension with him while they both try to boast about women to each other, were they to meet irl. Ironically, the rogue trainer (a womanising charmer) and the ninja trainer (an intense, honourable guy bad at social cues even among his own people who ends up falling from grace and choosing to stay in the vicinity of said rogue trainer) are an interesting pair of NPCs to teach Dean about where to stick knives. :) 

He’d go back and power-level dragoon once he starts Heavensward though, because Aymeric is also super intense with messy dark hair and big blue eyes that see right through you. :D He’s getting that gae bolg for him, you know? 

If they’re going to bully Cas to be their healer, he’d probably get really dedicated to the discipline especially as he can stay up all night to play and doesn’t need to take breaks to pee so he’d probably level conjurer/white mage (nature healing) and scholar (ancient book lore with a class quest which mixes ancient curses on a whole people, family drama and a bit of interspeciesish love) and then also pick up astrologian, which is good because it’s spooky star and making your own fate magic. The storyline for that is garbage in the sense that it’s really weakly written, but my favourite character randomly picks up AST in the latest expansion, and has an absolutely fucking wild subtextual romance with another character, including SPN level adopting of a random child who matches Jack in many respects, with said character. And in many respects emotionally they’re Cas and Dean but without any of the personal baggage between them specifically so they really are just chill and married, whatever else they’re stressed about (I say, dreading the next patch is going to finally bring up some questions about what is going on with them as it’s getting weirdly conspicuous while still utterly unsaid). So I would hope if Cas started projecting onto an astrologian character it would be him :P 

Cas also would get into summoner as the other branch of scholar because honestly those two classes are about as close to the random sigil drawing and reading things from books etc analogy to his own occult magic, except you can summon cool dragons and elementals to fight for you. 

they’d buy Jack a boost to 60 and he’d pick up dark knight and white mage probably just to subtly fuck with Dean 

(I am still not over Dean trying to test him to see if he was evil or not by whether he chose devil or angel cake)

Since there’s essays involved I’m assuming she teaches either history or literature? Kinda on the fence because I feel like she’d be good at giving a no-nonsense version of history filled with interesting details and prompts that make you think (and also hosts monthly debates on controversial issues), but I also want Yao to be as un-confident as possible in his abilities in her class, and I feel like he would be less comfortable/sure of his answers and thoughts in a lit class than a history one. I’m not sure though

honestly i would really want her to teach lit so bad but history would be so cool too.. as someone who suffered through lit for the first month of school (though i think i'm getting the hang of it now :D) i also want yao to suffer through the feelings of inadequacy when the teacher gives an evaluation that is COMPLETELY different from yours while also awkwardly trying to tell you your evaluation is wrong without crushing your ~passion for learning~ or something... but at the same time vietnam has such strong history vibes??? and they would probably clash over like different methods of historiography and methods for interpreting sources BUT historiography isn't really taught in-depth here at high scholl level ... And at the same time lit is the best place for one to feel Insecure so i really don't know because vietnam has such History/art vibes.. i think you should decide this i have no idea 😔

ooh yeah I think they’d be interesting; definitely agree with what you said about India being really flamboyant and Vietnam being more honest/down to earth and definitely someone who hates when people put on airs (which Aditya does to a fairly large extent...). I think she’d like him just a tad more because he isn’t super condescending and gets along with his classmates pretty well; she knows he’s trying to impress her (lollolll they’re all trying to get teacher points for recommendations) but at least he’s friendly and participates in class and stuff. Also I think India’s good at small talk, makes an effort in getting to know people, and is very emotionally in tune with other’s feelings (even if he’s a bit stupid/oblivious sometimes) so even if Vietnam is kinda closed off to him at first (she’s nicer to him than Yao though, that’s for sure) he can get along with her quickly by picking up on what she likes talking about and accommodating her interests. Yao could theoretically be charming like Aditya but he just doesn’t make an effort lol. YES to bonding over coffee, especially raging about how Starbucks is Inferior™™™™ (idk if Aditya would drink coffee but I think Vietnam brews her own Vietnamese iced coffee at home and bring it to class because she needs Fortification for putting up with Indchuran lol.) However, I also want to see her popping his bubble and whenever he’s exaggerating one of his accomplishments, Vietnam just shuts him right down. “No, he actually didn’t go all out; I’ve had students turn in whole ass dioramas for that project so your meager offerings are nothing special :}” (Vietnam has the pleasure of crushing each of their egos in turn hehehe)

Looks like someone caught feelings (platonically ofc) :) She sees right through his excuses for coming back and is like “haha bastard you got sentimental and Attached to me >:)”, but then Yao proceeds to remind her exactly why that’s a bad thing lmao (also... what if... we smashed this au and bros for life together.... and Vietnam is the first person to see that they’re hopelessly pining on one of their visits to see her..........and she calls them out on it....o-o)

SAME literature is the one class that makes you thoroughly question your comprehension and understanding of everything in life everything ever written, but HISTORY. she would be such a fun history teacher and I can see her having her students really dig into events for themselves and make their own evaluations of why things happened and who’s “right”. YES THEM CLASHING OVER HISTORIOGRAPHY hmm... maybe we could get around historiography not being covered much by having Yao be Extra™? For example, maybe one day Vietnam offhandedly mentions there’s a lot of interpretations around x period (and whether it was a success or failure) depending on which type of historiography you subscribe to; Yao, who was already feeling strongly on the subject, does some research (“what is historiography” “interpretations of x” *rabbit hole of articles ensues*) and then goes to class the next day armed with 10 sources and a full on debate about the subject ensues, resulting in him being late to lunch by half an hour. 

What about a compromise, where Yao has a ferocious literature teacher (who??? idk) but Vietnam is teaching history, and when he gets comfortable in her class he starts complaining about the lit teacher and she thinks oh finally, a teacher that he’s intimidated by. I am at peace now. 😌.

I'm sorry that the content I reblog is offensive to you. I understand that RR has been a large part of a lot of our childhoods, and his works mean a lot to us. However, we cannot ignore that he has done some very, very shady stuff while writing said works that we know and love and a lot of fans are tired of this, as well as him being… not a very nice person on Twitter these days, trying to justify his more problematic behaviour. I am not saying that RR himself is inherently bad, but him trying to run from his mistakes is only making our current fandom life more painful.

I am a woc. I spent a week away from the fandom and was definitely in denial for the ongoing chaos for about half of that time, and my East Asian representation is, personally, “less” problematic than the representation for other minorities (in the US). But I realized I do need to get my head out of my rear end someday and confront my own internalized bs, bit by bit. And I choose to start today.

Fandom is not a nice place. Arguments and discourse are everywhere, from shipping wars to just conflicting headcanons, but those are minuscule when compared with discriminatory behaviour that help contribute to the hatred/bigotry in the already problematic society we live in today.

I've already been through my five stages of grief over this when the Tumblr users I had notifications on for started barreling me down with reblogged RR Crit posts. That's what I spent my past few days dealing with. But it's about time we stop acknowledging RR as a perfect man who can do no wrong and get him to own up for his past transgressions.

I hope that you understand our plight in due time - better late than never. As my current blog description states, I am both canon-sympathetic and canon-critical - what's written is written, and oftentimes I do try to understand from a character's perspective on why they do things in canon. But the canon-critical tag implies that I do not believe everything RR says is right and/or accurate and/or unproblematic. My more canon-critical side has come out today to help wage war on the old man's more problematic tendencies, and furthermore, the internalized discrimination in a fandom known to be “inclusive” and “woke”, including ourselves as fandom members, and also society.

Personally, I have respect for RR and do not outright hate and/or resent him deeply (as of writing this), but I also admit that his problematic actions and writing cannot go unchecked… right now, my complaints over the canon timeline are the least of my worries in the RR Crit tag. We learn and we grow - I glossed over a lot of the problematic parts of the books when I was younger, because I didn't know the unfortunate implications behind it; but at the end of the day, we're not Peter Pan, and we all have to move on from our childhoods someday, or at least take a more realistic, critical view of the content we are consuming. Only then can we improve ourselves, others, and society.

Let me hope we all learn a very valuable lesson these days.

ok so alec headcanons i guess

1. alec was a chatty kid. not what you’d think, right? but then like, he was taking care of izzy, bc she’s his baby sister and Protective, and jace wasn’t really the type to listen to him. like, ever. alec would suddenly realize jace hadn’t been listening the whole time pretty much every time he tried to have a conversation with him or talk about things he was interested in, even when he listened when jace talked about his latest crush or whatever he was interested in. alec started abruptly going quiet before his sentence was finished, and jace didn’t seem to notice or was just like oh good you’re finally done talking, here’s what i was gonna say. eventually alec gives up. he still talks to izzy but she’s so little it’s a lot slower paced and he usually pays more attention to her than what he wants to say bc Baby Sister. by the time izzy’s old enough to like, properly, hold a conversation (she is also pretty chatty) alec’s already gone a lot quieter. by the time we see him, he basically doesn’t initiate conversation on things he’s interested in that aren’t work-related. he does still sometimes talk to izzy, but it’s hard to get the words out and get everything sounding right, so he gets annoyed with himself. it doesn’t come as easy anymore.

and not to show my magnus stan roots but magnus is kind of similar, albeit way less clear cut, he tends to ramble and talk a lot about his special interests only to shut himself up when he realizes he’s definitely boring whoever he’s talking to (he isn’t, necessarily, but after enough times being told to shut up when you get excited you believe everyone wants you to shut up.) and then he was trying to keep up the whole classy unaffected stylish “def not an adorkable disaster bi nerd, i am dangerous deadly unaffected lothario man who has never even heard of star trek or whatever” facade, and rambling about whatever interested him didn’t really fit that. so he retreated more into himself, too. he did have his friends to talk to, but catarina is so busy and he doesn’t want to bother her and raphael doesn’t want to hear his foolish old dad ramble on, does he, and ragnor–he’d always put up with magnus’s babble, and listened, but magnus felt like he was boring him and then ragnor was–well.

anyway so to united these, then, they met each other. and it takes a while, but they get comfortable with each other. magnus goes on a long ramble about a potion he’s been trying to get just right and then cuts himself off, embarrassed, and apologizes for probably boring alec, and alec’s like what? no, that was really interesting, i was listening, can you explain the thing with the mandrake root? and magnus is like…oh.. (also side note: magnus is incredibly cute when rambling about things he’s interested in, he waves his hands a lot and his eyes are all excited and warm and he’s so lively, and clearly passionate, that it’s engaging and pulls you in. like a really good professor. and sometimes he starts talking about something way above most people’s heads without realizing how Smart he is, but if you ask him to clarify he’s like, totally non-condescending and explains it in creative and understandable way????? sorry im in love with adhd magnus thanks to someone anyway)

and then vice versa, alec slowly feels more comfortable talking about things that interest him, like a book he’s been reading and how it’s so fucking stupid the heroine went for the “blonde bad boy” when he’s such a dick to her, or whatever, like it starts as an angry rant about something but before he can cut himself off he realizes magnus is listening. like, actually listening. and like, if it’s appropriate, magnus will ask questions, engage in what alec’s talking about, and alec finds himself getting better at putting to words what he means and magnus is never mean about it, always patient and understanding

2. as a kid alec read romance novels. cheesy shitty fun romance novels. especially the ones that are like, written by women (or better, queer people, but that’s later) and aren’t weird? you know what i mean? and he loved them. romance was something young alec dreamed of a lot, even if he tried to ignore how he preferred tall, dark, and handsome to the main character, or the kind man the heroine fell in love with to the heroine herself. he hid trashy romance novels like most teen boys his age (including jace) hid porn magazines or whatever. he eventually maybe found some queer lit, but he didn’t dare to bring those back to the institute, instead choosing to go to the library the few times he had free time to sneak out (aka when he wasn’t working, sleeping, training, or watching izzy and jaces’ backs when they snuck out to clubs and shit.

also: 3. also i stand by the fact that alec wasn’t in denial about being gay. he wasn’t repressed, he knew exactly what he wanted and who he was, he just didn’t think it was possible for him to be with a man and be happy.

6. alec can and will become immortal for magnus. and not just literally only for magnus, for himself as well–like he doesn’t have to spend the rest of his life being a tool for the clave, he can work for better relations between downworlders and shadowhunters, and like accords that aren’t shitty, and he can be more than just another soldier or even head of the institute, he can be more and have time to actually spend time on himself, like it doesn’t have to be training-work-protect his siblings-sleep-training, and then one day he gets married and has kids and dies. he can actually experience the world, do things he enjoys, spend time with his husband, and most of all, he can spend the rest of his life with magnus bane, the love of his life, his husband, someone he loves so much. he can make sure magnus’s heart doesn’t get broken again by falling in love only to lose him. they get their happy ending, you know???? we stan

Bakugou Katsuki, part one: Thoughts and opinions.

No one is asking for this and this isn't necessary, but I have many thoughts about Bakugou and I'd like to talk about them! Also to note, I've only just started season three, so some things I say here may not be accurate to events that happen later in the series. And yes, this is the first part of a 'series' I guess because originally I wanted to include theories and headcanons I have for him, but that would've been too long, so those get their own post. Anyway-

My initial reaction to Bakugou when I first started watching bnha was that...he was just a huge asshole. Which he is! He's unnecessarily rude to Izuku, he explicitly tells Izuku to kill himself, and seems to make it his main goal in life (aside from being a hero) to remind Izuku that he's useless and he'll never be anything, even after they both get into UA. It's really obvious right off the bat that Bakugou has a superiority complex, and had convinced himself that he was already so much better than anyone his age, maybe every student in UA. I hated him because of this. I didn't (and still don't in a way) think its neccessary to have a character who was so self absorbed with himself. In the beginning I just knew he was going to get some huge arc dedicated to him that would have major character development and suddenly everything he did would be forgiven.

But now, I don't think thats going to happen. I don't that any arc Bakugou is going to be the key factor in is going to be all about 'redeeming' him, because his redemption can't be (and hasn't been) contained into one arc! His character development has been happening since the beginning. Season one Bakugou and the end of the sports festival arc Bakugou are already pretty different. In my opinion, season one Bakugou wouldn't have even admitted that any of his classmates could match up to him in combat. By the end of the sports festival, while he isn't willing to admit it so bluntly, he still knows that they can put up a fight. When Bakugou wants to fight, he wants a fight. he wants to be challenged against someone who's going to put in just as much effort as him. His fight with Uraraka is a perfect example of this-

Look at his smile in the beginning. They both know that Bakugou is significantly stronger than her, and look at how excited and ready he is that she's still standing and putting up a fight. When Uraraka ultimately collapses, Bakugou doesn't get mad because he knows she put in all she could, and he (most likely begrudgingly and unwittingly) respects her for it. This is obvious later when Denki asks why Bakugou didn't go easier on Uraraka because she's a 'fragile girl'

So already its easy to see that his superiority complex, while still there and apparent, is slowly starting to subdue. This could be because he's being introduced to people who are very powerful like him, but also because these people just...aren't scared of him like Izuku or other people in the past were. I think the sudden shift in how people at school feel about him definitely has had some affect on him, and slowly opening his eyes to the fact that he's not actually the very best? I think its very controversial thing for him to come to terms with, which is why he's still so outwardly angry all the time.

Now other stuff has happened thats also crscked into this revelation for him, like during the indor battles where he saw a glimpse of just how strong Todoroki is, teaming up with Kirishima during the cavalry battle, and being partnered with Izuku during the final exam are all things that have definitely also played a factor in his 'I'm not the greatest' mind set.

Now after all this my opinion of him now vs. When I first started watching has definitely changed. Do I like Bakugou? No. No, I still think he's the most overrated character in bnha. Does that mean I hate him or think he's a bad character? No! I don't hate him anymore, if anything I'm at a gray area with him, and I think he's an excellently written character who has a lot of potential and I think that potential will be written out throughout the whole story.

Do I think Bakugou Katsuki is a good person? Well, yeah, I do. I believe that at his core, Bakugou wants to help others. He wants to be a hero for a reason outside of just being 'number one'. He's done mean things but also...he's a teenager, he's like 16. Teenagers are just mean. Does this mean I think he's going to have some sudden change and suddenly be smiley and happy all the time? Also no! I think Bakugou is gruff by nature, but he also will figure out how to regulate his emotions better. So its not fair to deem him irredeemable when he's literally a child who still has plenty of time to grow as a person.

Fair enough. Your right, I know. People can write what they want, I say that all the time too. And I'm glad people have stuff they like to read, just wish there were other kinds of fic portrayals too because so far that's the majority. I haven't read a single Shouto fic in months, or anything Todoroki (includes Dabi) since most of the time there's something triggering about it. As long as people don't genuinely think Shouto 'should' act like that because of his backstory then I'm good. (1/3)

Same, but you already know. Dumbing down characters or taking away characteristics in fanon is sad. But that's not so bad because most of the time I'm looking at canon and hope they do this or don't do that, because that's what influences fanon and either sinks or swims in the fandom. Okay, true. I don't know how okay anyone will be either. I just didn't think or have any hope that canon would address it. It's more of something that needs to get solved by yourself quietly in a sub-plot. Instead of being exposed to the whole world. The entire Todoroki situation has been between him and Deku, and now Bakugo. Everything stays in the Todoroki home. And your gonna have to pry Hawks' story from his non-existent talons. (3/3)

Oh as much as I accept that fanfiction is written firstmost for the writer, I wish everydamn day that someone would write a fic to my acquired taste because I’m so bored of the majority maybe I should just write it myself...

That’s fair and also a shame because you can’t consume content of a character that you enjoy. Thankfully I don’t think I’ve seen many (or any) people who think such characterization is canon.

Hell, even without canon influence, once a fanon idea becomes popular, it’s hard to fight it (even when you think it’s very out of character) but I get what you mean. But there is something satisfying when a popular fanon headcanon that you personally hated gets sunk in canon and vise versa, seeing something that you enjoyed being confirmed.

And you’re probably right about that anon, I have a small hope it might get adressed sooner or later but it’s only a fleeting one which I wouldn’t be surprised if it didn’t happen or is completely glossed over (who knows? Maybe some people are okay with it, we’ve never really seen anyone’s opinion on it after all as Shouto’s only ever told Deku (and Bakugo) while Hawks has never told anyone)

I can understand reasons why the Todoroki family don’t want it to be public knowledge and because they’re the only ones that experienced it, it is up to them whether it’s revealed or not (well unless Dabi does something which he probably will). Also apparently we’re only allowed to learn about Hawks past through small flashbacks and even then it’s still not very clear T-T.

Do you have any writing advice for someone who really struggles with writing body language? I have a hard time reading it in the real world and I'm lost on how to write it in my fics. I think my dialogue is fine it just seems like everything else is lacking. The transition from rp writing to fanfiction is really tough, and I can't seem to adapt to the now popular fanfiction trends of the way things are written. I'd be very grateful for any advice.

Anon, do not worry! Many people, including myself, strugglewith this. I’m going to make a couple of assumptions to get us started (if theyare incorrect just shoot me another ask and I can go in a different direction).I assume that if you are coming to me then you have read some of my writing andtherefore I also assume that you enjoy supercorp. With those two assumptions inmind I’m going to use that arena to give my advice. But please keep in mindthat this is only MY opinion. I’ve been writing pretty much my whole life andI’ve learned that there really is no right or wrong way to go about writing.Sure, there are preferred styles, grammatical rules, trends that may bepopular, etc…but essentially you have to find YOUR flow and style. Writing andwhat is considered the right way to write so subjective.

And just as a quick note I have never done rp writing sokeep that in mind.

Here is my advice (and I explain each point below):

1. Keep trying at the real life body language and understandthe pros and cons of having that information.

2. Use the resources you have (e.g., the show and gifs).

3. Find actors/actresses to use as muses and inspiration whoare really talented and who also put everything into their characters.

4. Read! 

Reading body language in the real world is hard. When youare interacting with another person there is so much else going on. Not onlyare you most likely participating in that interaction but you are trying toprocess what the other person is saying and doing on top of consideringenvironmental/situational variables, analyzing your own intentions while alsotrying to gauge the other person’s intentions – its crazy! This is why so fewpeople are good at this. Yet body language is crucial in many cases. Hell, in apersonal example of mine just recently – I was saying everything I could tosomeone, being EXPLICIT with my diction and my intentions and they just didn’tget it (or chose to ignore it for what it was :/) and…*sigh* well it’s a messlet me tell you. And I wonder if the interactions between us had happened inperson where there was body language (i.e., extra data) to process then perhapsthings wouldn’t have become so convoluted? There has been a lot of research thatshows we humans are not really good at conveying what we mean in simple text.If someone sends you a text that IS IN ALL CAPS you know something is going onout of the ordinary. They are excited, angry, etc… and are trying to getcertain information across in that way. That helps to a point. And its funnythat the rise of emojis was supposed to help us communicate better, beyond capsand punctuation, in written form but new research is showing that we evenmisinterpret those as well lol. So obviously body language can help us withthis problem but again for many of us that can be overwhelming to deal with inthe real world. That being said, writing body language still needs to berealistic and convey important information but in fiction we can process iteasier than if it was happening live in front of us.

Lucky for us, we are writing fanfiction and we have thosecharacters on our screen where we can watch them over and over in the privacyof our own homes with little distractions. If you are in the supercorp fandomthen even more lucky because we have some of the best gif makers in the entireSupergirl fandom and they are an absolute blessing. I think gifs are underratedwhen it comes to character analysis but they are so good for body languagestudy because you have a small amount of data input, three to ten seconds orso, and it automatically repeats so no pausing and rewinding back on Netflix oryour stream. So let us look at an example:

Holy shit. This is a writer’s gold mine. I mean look atthis: we know Lena doesn’t have a lot of friends (really none at this point inS2, our poor precious baby *cries*). We know she only ever felt accepted by Lexand look what he did to the world and ultimately her. And we’ve seen the longgazes, the smiles, the lip bites between her and Kara/Supergirl. We alreadyknow all of this – we have this data! So in that mindset, what does this mean?What does that sudden breath mean for Lena when Kara finally opens the doorknowing what we know? She has found acceptance in someone else – Kara – someonewho knew she was a Luthor from the start but has put her belief in Lenaregardless. But even if you don’t know or don’t use all of this data look ather body! Look at her hands, for example. They are in a classic worry positionone that other characters have done (see Meredith Grey from Grey’s Anatomy asjust one example) and Lena has done this herself several times across many episodesbecause she is a soft precious baby who is really worried how others perceiveher. Now look at her facial expression. You can tell exactly when Kara openedthe door and realized it was Lena. Even though we can’t see Kara’s face we cantell from Lena’s face when Kara smiles because we see that relief on Lena’sface. And then in that second gif what does that little shy sway mean? What doyou pick up from her doing that? To me, she is not only relieved that Kara isletting her in her home and doesn’t seem at all freaked out that she is there butalso in a way she is in a giddy disbelief that she’s not being turned away akashe feels accepted (and of course these two fools love each other and we cansee that here). And look how we can see all of that in how her hands start torelax too! My biggest piece of advice is to study stuff like this and/or mimicit in your own fics. Also look at what people say about gifs in the tags! Its so frustrating when people don’t put anything in the tags and I can be guilty of it but some people do the type of interpretation I just did above in the tags of gif posts and you can learn a lot by seeing how others are interpreting a scene.

You really can’t do anything that I just mentioned above ifyou don’t have that talented person on your screen though. Lucky for us we havethe one and only Katie McGrath who conveys more character information in twoseconds of acting than some of the other characters on Supergirl do in anentire episode. I could probably write two pages of description based on thetwo short gifs above and that is all in thanks to Katie and her wonderfulness. Katieis also a perfect example at someone who puts her heart and soul into hercharacters. You can tell that by how she does her interviews and the in-depthanswers she provides. She really IS Lena on screen. Chyler is another greatexample on Supergirl. I mean, Chyler should be earning Emmys for her portrayalof Alex in both Season 1 and 2 but I’m biased (and Katie too for Lena’s character). Sasha Alexander as Maura Isleson the TNT’s now concluded show Rizzoli and Isles is yet another example thathas benefitted me. When you have amazing characters and actors/actresses behind them they can inspire you to write your best stuff and give you so much to workwith. 

Lastly one of the other things you can do is to read.Whether its published fiction or fanfiction just read and see how others are conveyingbody language. When you read a section and get that vivid imagery as a readerstop and evaluate that section. What did that author do to set up that scene foryou? How do they have the characters interacting with one another and theenvironment around them? If you ever get to beta for somebody take thatopportunity! It will give you the chance to read someone’s fic and be in themindset of editing where you are looking at how the story is coming togetherthrough dialogue and body language. Or you can even contact one of yourfavorite writers and just tell them about your favorite sections of their pieceand list the reasons why. Not only will you make that author’s day but that mayalso help get a conversation started where you can discuss the intricacies ofthe characters including body language. This is really how @stennnn06 and I gotstarted talking. We squealed about Katie (as we still do) but then we startedlooking at each other’s writing, beta-ing for one another, and collaborating. Ican’t speak for sten but I know that I write better after discussing Lena andour headcanons with her. You can try to get a beta for your stuff too! Whenyour beta starts analyzing your stuff and asking you questions it really putsit in perspective for you and you can learn so much. I can tell you right nowthat I learned more about one of MY OWN stories by having @mssirey beta it andgive me feedback.
