Shaaloani: The Land of Enchantment Part Two

Hello again! First of all thank you so much for your responses to these posts -- I've really enjoyed reading your reblogs. I'm glad folks are enjoying this!

As I mentioned in the first post -- here is the second half! It's covers the plants and animals I thought worth special distinction. By that I mean animals that communicate how much research was done regarding this zone. So no rroneek, no uxtena. It's pretty clear they are both meant to be buffalo and rattlesnakes.

And if you're somebody who hadn't caught that, um... surprise! That's what they're based on.

If you're somehow getting this post without reading or seeing Part One first, here is a link to Part One. I'd recommend giving it a read first.

With that taken care of, let's pick up where we left off before!

Shaaloani Flora

Aside from the cacti, there are a lot of plants I recognize as native to the regions discussed in Part One! First is this scrubby, short and wide tree. It took a few screenshots and a lot of scrutiny. I was torn for a bit thinking it was a creosote bush, but upon zooming in close I'm of the mind it's a redberry juniper tree instead!

The leaves are long and thing, and the shape gives to mind of juniper needles more. Juniper 'leaves' kind of scale over each other and between texture resolution and my horrible eye sight I can't tell if this does the same. Still! There's a photo below my two screenshots for further emphasis:

These are also the trees turned red near the ceruleum fields -- junipers tend to do that when they are dying. They are also incredibly hardy so typically when you've managed to kill one it's likely not good.

I will say when I was out here I noticed the botanist gathering log has mesquite beans on it -- and you harvest them from these trees! Which is too silly for me; so here's a link to the the wiki about honey mesquite, and a photo of the beans on a tree.

It's probably a reach to try and ID this grass in the Yawtanane Grasslands, but given that it caught my eye I felt inclined to make a pitch. For context child me thought a fun and engaging after school club project was to learn how to identify grass and other plants native to Texas. So when I looked at it I wanted to take a guess based on other regional clues:

To me I think it could be cane bluestem, a grass that's drought tolerant and popular for grazing animals. And its seeds are dispersed from these little fluffy heads like this.

I will say as a caveat that a lot of grass in this area can be dispersed by wind. So it might not be cane bluestem -- hell it's a stretch to even try this. But I like to think they also considered the grass.

The bush above I also hmmed and hrmmed about for a bit before positing if it was meant to be black persimmon. It's commonly called Texas persimmon or Mexican persimmon -- and it's found in Coahuila, Tamaulipas and Neuvo León. They generally just look like big shrubs instead of trees.

I mentioned this in part one, but I'll go ahead and reiterate here a few things:

One is I think Lake Taori's about the only place that reads as specifically Texas

Two is it's not a bayou. That's an East Texas ecosystem and way too wet for Shaaloani

Three is there are cypress trees west of San Antonio growing along the Frio river, and doing quite well! Garner State Park has quite a few of them

I stand by this because these trees are show to be reproducing by making 'knees' -- offshoots from their root system. Think of it like Pando.

I also feel cypress is correct; the trunks are wider at the base than higher up, and the leaves are the right shape. I also appreciate there's Spanish moss hanging from them, which is also pretty common.

The last plant I want to cover is this flowering bush -- I'm going to admit this one was a struggle because I don't know of a lot of bushes with large white flowers like this. I've seen flowers of this shape, but most tend to be ground cover plants that grow very low to the soil.

What I think it might be, which would feel appropriate, is a take on the datura. They can get a bit higher off the ground than most wildflowers. And they were used by several native tribes for cultural practices.

The flowers are bigger in real life than depicted here -- so this is a reach! If someone has a better suggestion I'm open to it.

Shaaloani Fauna

When Fate farming out here, I've seen several players comment like 'huh, there sure are a lot of dinosaurs on this map'. And you're right! Because a lot of this region is home to some incredibly rich fossil formations.

Big Bend National Park contains part of the Javelina Formation -- home to large creatures such as the Quetzalcoatlus, a pterosaur that boasted a 39 foot wingspan. You can read about fossils found in Big Bend here. The Javelina Formation has its own wiki article that details some of the specimens found within it, including the Bravoceratops and the Torosaurus. The Ojo Alamo Formation in New Mexico is home to the Ojoceratops. Just south of these is the Aguja Formation in the Mexican states of Coahuila and Chihuahua. These formations are home to fossils of all three types of scalekin above -- as well as alligators, who are also on this map!

Other Formations in the Southwest home to great fossil finds are:

Kayenta Formation (Colorado & Utah)

Tepetate Formation (Mexico)

Black Peaks Formation (Texas)

There's even a fun sightseeing lore blurb which acknowledges this!

I think this is a fun addition to the zone that strengthens the real world inspiration sources and have fun with world building -- a lot of the formations near the Permian Basin were along the shore or under the waves of the Permian Sea!

Hello Everyone!

This is a long one, so apologies in advance! 

You may notice the Klaine Advent looking a little different this year! As noted in an earlier post, we’re rebranding to the December Klaine Fanworks Challenge!

There are a handful of reasons we’re doing this, but hopefully this little refresh will get people excited about participating all the way to the end. For consistency this year this event will remain attached to the Klaine Advent blog, and we’ll determine after the event whether we need to change that in the future.

So, how are things changing? 

There will be still be a daily word (yay!), these are chosen via a random word generator, and are NOT themed in any way. These words will post on this blog every day around 6 am Eastern Standard TIme.

That said! Since it is December, and Glee comes with a Christmas episode every year, and Klaine do have a Christmas duet tradition (more years than not anyway…) we will also be posting a weekly theme! These will be holiday flavored, and we are kicking off this inaugural event with the theme of Christmas Songs. Each weekly themed post will highlight a different song and some selected lyrics.

On to the details!

The Dates. December 1 - December 21 

The Words. Every day around 6am, US Eastern Standard Time, a fresh new word will pop out of the queue. This year the words are not alphabetical, and were chosen by a random word generator. The wonderful @caramelcoffeeaddict did all of the artwork again this year!

How to participate. Anyone can contribute, no need to sign up! There will be a single word prompt post each day for 21 days (December 1-21), and a holiday themed post every Friday beginning December 1, with the final themed post dropping December 22. You can write a drabble (or a sentence or a novel, if you like), create an art piece, make fresh gifs based on the prompt - whatever inspires you! This year the tag will be: “december klaine challenge 2023” and please tag with the word of the day so volunteers can ID the posts they need to reblog (please please please make sure all of your contributions are tagged so we can find them!). 

Contribute however works best for you. You can do something every day, every 4th day, once a week, altogether at the end, whatever works for you and your schedule. Use all the prompts or pick and choose what speaks to you. Set your own challenges. The only requirements for the Challenge are that it be Klaine centered, and that it references or uses one the word (or theme) prompt in some way.

Volunteers will be reblogging fics to the @todaydreambelieversfic blog, so you can always go scroll the blog to find the latest entries.  Of course everyone (especially the authors!) would be delighted if people reblogged to their own blog - the more people who reblog something the wider the potential viewing audience. We want to encourage everyone to reblog as many fics as they like all throughout the month!!

Partnership. This year again we’ll be partnering with @todaydreambelieversfic.  Authors and other creators for Klaine Advent who would like an additional place to promote their works are welcome to join as members. Just send a private message to @todaydreambelieversfic with your email address and they’ll add you to the blog membership.

Archive of Our Own. We have created a collection on AO3 for those people who don’t post to tumblr, and where those folks who do post to tumblr can share their advent works if you like! The collection will be up this weekend and I'll make another post when that's rolling.

Evidence of being a bot-

Their first post was reblogged yesterday. Their blog is entirely fandom reblogs, the only original post is the donation link. They reblog almost exclusively original fandom posts, meaning they aren't reblogging posts that the people have followed have reblogged, which I imagine is what most people do. To me this reads like the bot went though a fandom tag and reblogged every post in it. Additionally none of their posts have tags added, which isn't inherently a red flag, but definitely adds to the 'lack of personality' I've seen so far.

No details provided about who this person is. Personally I'm against providing details online, but usually blogs have a name (even a fake one!) or age or at least their interests in their bio. In the case of legit donation posts, people usually include images or proof, to catch attention if nothing else.

Their profile pic and blog header are both AI generated. This is something a normal blog could do, but combined with all the other red flags I'm adding this to the list. It comes across as way to imply personality without having to actually spend time coming up with a believable personality.

The ask for donations seems iffy to me too. I'm not as experienced with recognizing AI writing as AI images, so I can't say for sure, but im fairly confident this was compiled by AI. It's pretty vague (what ovary surgery??? It's breast cancer why are you having surgery on your ovaries??? Why do you need PT for your left arm?) and says the link is below when it, very clearly, is not.

Anyways long story short I am 99% sure this is a bot, yall should make sure to report and block any similar messages you may get

Believe it or not, the post this quote comes from was about misgendering and then spun off into weird-ass transmisogynistic shit, mostly revolving “transunity”, but I saw this part here and I wanted to say something about it so sorry y’all, I’m bringing it over here. 

The usage of serano-esque and an almost quote of hers literally entrances me. I say almost quote because OP explicitly edited out the fact the quote is about transmisogyny, not transphobia. Which is an important distinction because if you know anything about transmisogyny, you’ll know transmisogynists and transphobes are two totally different classes of bigots.

Without the distinction? The quote is just inaccurate and useless. And the idea you can connect transunity, some kind of watered-down-fucked-up idea of transmisogyny, and misgendering together like that is like trying to stick a rock to the table using canola oil and glitter glue. Which is to say, absurd and generally wild as fuck. 

(That’s probably why the further the post goes, the wilder it gets tbh.)

It’s just. I know it’s not wildly appreciated when I make posts about transmisogyny but I think it’s absolutely fucking absurd posts like that can get tons of notes with next to no issue when OP and others are blatantly using transmisogynistic language and condescending to any trans women/fems who point it out and no one really seems to give a fuck. Like y'all wonder why a lot of TMA folks and even just anti-transmisogyny folks in general don't trust "transunity" fuckers? This is just one example in a list a mile long of shit that slides by in these crowds that's blatantly transmisogynistic but no one's allowed to say anything about it, even though it's complete bullshit and usually doesn't even make a coherent point.

So many of you have this idea that because you pride yourselves on not "policing" each others language, that you've somehow eliminated hierarchy and the oppression we need to fight within our community. That you can just "unite" and we can fight our oppressors instead but it doesn't work like that and all you wind up doing is acting like bigoted jackasses trying to mask it with progressive language. So actually fucking think before reblogging this type of shit and work on your transmisogyny for fucks sake, thank you.

...Do you ever see people critiquing specific word usage in novels and wonder if they know that language can be used in fun and figurative ways? And that this is half the joy of writing?

An example off the top of my head - if I say ‘He gave a whisper of a smile’, it does not mean that the smile is literally whispering; it means that the word ‘whisper’ invokes a sense of smallness, due perhaps to subtlety or shyness, and that is something I want connected to your mental envisioning of this dude’s smile.

Oh. My. God. When I sent that ask about the fic dream I had, I sent it probably 30 minutes after I woke up. And I completely forgot about sending you the ask afterwards because I logged out for the weekend, so I am really sorry that it took me so long to reply back to you!

First of, I do have to say that I read your one shot fic you posted and it was absolutely amazing. Which is no surprise there since clearly conscious me and unconscious me share the same feelings and opinions when it comes to your writing which is that awake or not, your writing is insanely good… even if some of it isn’t real lol.

It was such a nice and raw fic (i kept trying to come up with a better/nicer way to describe it but i swear this is meant in a very good way! The realness of it was absolutely incredible) I especially loved the line ‘I needed a haircut but Brian kept playing with it and I couldn't bring myself to go to the barber and take that away from him. Too.’ No joke, I said ‘damn’ out loud. I have no clue why i loved this line so much but I just did. In a very simple way, it described everything and more. So as usual, you wrote an amazing fic, it was a very lovely read. Literally had me gasping and audibly commenting my thoughts about it as if I was watching them on my damn tv.

And i saw your post/reply to my ask that your friend is now writing the fic based on my dream and I literally let out a scream when I saw that. I cannot believe my brain cooked up something that was nothing and now someone is actually doing something absolutely amazing with it. Can’t wait to see what they do with it because when I read the chapter it had me giggling like a dumbass. If I wasn’t at work id be kicking my feet like a dumbass. My brain was lowkey having a deja vu moment like that one spider man meme where they’re pointing at each other like ‘heeey!!! I know you…kinda’

All of you fans that continue to write fics (or make gifs!) for this fandom are a gift that keeps on giving! And i hope you all know how very appreciated you all are! Both of these two fics genuinely made my entire week so much better because I just logged on and saw it.

Your brain is a great fic generator! Seriously, go back to sleep and come back with more fic ideas. We have such a small but talented fandom here on tumblr. Some people writing amazing fics. Some people creating incredible gifs. And then a whole audience of folks who are cheering everyone on. There’s no fandom without someone out there reading and reblogging and commenting and adding commentary in the tags. I appreciate that the fandom is so small that we all kind of know each other.

An open letter to the artist community (from a disabled artist)

I’m not really someone who likes making PSA type posts, as I like to keep my existence mainly quiet but with some consideration I’d like to cast my stone in the water today to talk about the entitlement of able bodied artists towards disabled folk.

I want to express foremost that I AM disabled, I AM an artist. I’ve been doing art since I was 9, and have been taking it as a serious career possibility since I was 10. I’ve been doing this for a long time, and while I might not be in the same business as many other artists, I absolutely get the right to talk about our own community.

I’ve gotten into the ID scene more recently than I’ve been an artist. I am not a perfect product of IDers, but I am someone I consider knowledgeable on the subject and want to share part of my insight for other artists, young and old.

What are IDs?

IDs, or image descriptions, are text additions onto a post that describe what is going on in the image or video. These IDs are here so people who have visual impairments, who cannot see the image, or otherwise do not understand what is going on can gain access to the post and understand what is going on.

IDs ARE necessary, because not everyone on the internet is able bodied, and disabled people shouldn’t be excluded from enjoying the posts or art we enjoy. If you think disabled people don’t belong on the internet, or that adding IDs are a waste of time, or make a post look ‘ugly’, you are ableist. 

They are valuable tools that disabled people need, and as a community we should all work towards adding more IDs to our posts, or reblogging posts with IDs in the notes. Many of us are not asking you not to post ever unless a post has an ID, and we’re not asking everyone to start adding identifications (though it would be deeply appreciated!), we’re asking you to be more conscious of these usual tools so that other parts of the community who are otherwise excluded from your normal posts, can be included!

Art entitlement

Okay, great! Cool! We know what an ID is, and why they’re important, but what’s the tie into art? Very glad you asked! You see, most art is a visual medium that has traditionally been only accessible to those who can see it. Thanks to the internet, art has become a more widespread medium that anyone can enjoy!

That’s why, in more recent years, accessibility blogs have been reblogging art with image descriptions so that those who might not be able to access art in its image form, can still enjoy what an artist is trying to communicate with visuals.

IDs on art can be VERY helpful tools, especially for people who might consume similar content to you, but can’t always enjoy the exact same content as you due to outside factors. 

It’s why, as an artist, you should be conscious about posting art, or reblogging others' art.

Now, like above I am NOT saying you cannot post art ever unless you have an image ID. However I am saying that when you believe in full truth, that you as an artist are entitled to being reblogged for your time and effort, you are disrespecting several ideas.

You are disrespecting the idea that people OWE you something, when they don’t. As artists we often need as much attention as we can get on our art if we want to make big money off our work. However, as artists we are also often freelance. 

We have no employers besides ourselves, and our occasional clients. When we offer our work to others, our clients do not owe us to accept our services. They are entitled to say no. It’s the same in reblogs.

You are offering your service (art), and if a client for whatever reason doesn’t want to reblog your art. They don’t have to. You are not entitled to telling people what they do with their own autonomy. 

Additionally, when you are not providing accessibility to your art & are demanding/begging for people to reblog your art over liking it, you are digging your own grave here.

No one OWES you that reblog, but when you are purposefully excluding an entire community from your post, you are making it harder for people who DO want to reblog your post.

As someone who is disabled, I have very limited spoons. I take it out of my day to go online, and spend 5-20 minutes writing up an image description for posts I want to reblog. I cannot work endlessly reblogging posts with my own image IDs, but in most cases I have to make my own IDs because no one else has. 

Not every artist is able bodied, but a large majority of you are. It often takes much less effort and energy than it does for someone like me, or my friends, to make a short image description. 

If you are unwilling to do that bare minimum, or are unable to at that moment, you do not get to feel entitled to people reblogging your work. You do not get to shame your other community members, or your clients, for not reblogging your work ever. Period. 

I am tired of having to hear people complain over and over again, shaming their fellow artists for being the ‘weak backbone’ of their community for not reblogging each other's art. I am tired, I am disabled and I’m an artist: and I need you all to give a damn about adding image descriptions to your art/reblogging posts of art with image Ids.

Nova sighed looking down at her feet,they werent fond of parties, specially not with this Many people.

Only thing that made It barely worth it was in dionysus. Yep. They had it bad for the god of wine.

He was charming, and funny, and they would not have enough courage to talk to him. Slay monsters? Yeah, hunt Giant beasts? Absolutely. But talking to a cute guy? Nope. Not happening.

"This music is way too loud..." they thought, walking away from the hulking crowd "this was supposed to be my party. To celebrate I was becoming a huntress of artemis...I kinda feel bad for not enjoying myself".

Unbeknownst to the hunter, dionysus was watching them, he was itching to get to know Artemis' New huntress, he had heard amazing things from the goddess of the hunt.

He saw them scurry away to a quiter space, sitting down on a nearby bench and just...sulk.

So, trying to Keep as much people off of him as he could, the god of wine made his way towards Nova,who, inmediatly after noticing him approaching, straightened their back.

--Why, hello there, Nova I suppose?-- He asked.

--Yes, I am Nova, nice meeting you, Lord Dionysus-- they answered quite nervous.

--Oh no need for formalities, its a pleasure to meet you too, if I May ask,however, why is it that youre here, sulking by yourself? This is your party after all

--well-- They started-- parties arent much my style. But the townspeople decided to throw a party anyway... though id rather be somewhere quieter

Dionysus nodded-- I admitt the folk here are a bit too much, May I be so bold as to ask if youd like to run away somewhere else?

Nova seemed stunned-- I uh-uhm...yes,please? --he offered his hand and they took it sneakily slipping off towards the forest, seeing this, they couldnt help but ask-- Dionysus? Where are we going?

--You said you wanted to be somewhere quiet, and I know from good faith that you like forests and nature! So thats where we are going!

Soon they got to a quiet clearing,the moon was shining down on them, lighting up the treeless spot.

--ah, much better dont you think?-- said dionysus, sitting down on the Grass, patting the spot besides him.

--Yeah, much better-- Nova agreed sitting down with him-- its...peaceful

Now that it was only the two of them , the god took a moment to observe his companion, who was quietly growing a beautiful vine of blossomed grape vine flowers, tying it with sunflowers and roses.

"What a gentle soul..." he pondered "how quiet they are...".

--Dionysus? This is for you-- Nova commented, snapping him out of his trance.

He let them put the flower crown on his hair, and smiled-- thank you it is beautifully crafted

--heh,I appreciate that-- then the both of them looked at the Sky. In silence.

It wasnt unconfortable, just neither of them know what to speak about.

--Congratulations on being named a hunter of artemis, by the way-- the god of wine was the first one to break the quiet-- you must have worked very hard for that

--i did indeed, Many years of training-- the hunter responded-- thank you for taking me here, its better...-- Nova looked up at the stars-- artemis always jokes im a star, thats were my name comes from...

-- Nova Also means new, so New star...Also very fitting-- the god followed up-- you sure are like a batch of fresh air, and you shine like a star, I can tell by only looking at you, youre a good person, yknow?

His companion smiled, looking away from the night Sky-- I appreciate that

-- If you dont mind, once this night is over, could I ask you out?...on a date? Truth is ive been meaning to meet you sooner, never got the chance to, until now, that is-- the god proposed, scratching the back of his neck.

--Why of course, ive been meaning to talk to you, but I didnt have enough courage to pull it off, as you said though, until now

Dionysus Turned to them and smiled-- how about I take you out on a stroll, we can take a basket, fill it with food and take a blanket...we could have lunch in this very clearing tomorrow

--That sounds nice, why not-- after telling him the place where their hut was placed, they added-- I also wanted to dance tonight, guess thats the only bad thing of leaving the party, huh?

--not at all! We can dance togheter, right here-- with a snap of his fingers, a band of musicians appeared, they were made of purple light, And the song they played was slow and romantic.

They held eachother closely as they danced, smiling through it all in silence.

Then, when the night was over, Nova invited the god to stay at their hut, Dionysus didnt complain and now they were cuddled up in bed, with the god caressing the hunters hair.

They were half asleep, holding for dear life on their companion, who only looked at them as if they hung the moon and stars.

"Such a gentle soul"he thought, pulling the human for a quick kiss, and though half asleep, they kissed back to the best of their abilities.

--good night, my star-- the god muttered closing his eyes and Relaxing, planning on what to take to their first date.

I tend to forget about things as soon as I write them down and post them so when old stuff of mine starts getting notes I will reread it and be genuinely surprised at how good it is because I indisputably find myself hilarious but also cringe at everything I say so I require a minimum 6-month buffer to enjoy my own company

sorry to bother, but where do you get your houses/streets/shops/other sets? do you download them or build them? i'm not trying to copy, but i'm absolutely atrocious at building and decorating. if you have any resources you can point me towards that would be much appreciated!! same with furniture- where do you get it? ty!

hi there ! not a bother at all, i’m always happy to answer questions ! 

i do a mixture of download and build, generally. i actually always try to tag the person who built something, either their tumblr or their gallery id, if i didn’t build it myself, so you can look under the read-mores for those details. you’re welcome to ask about specific locations, tho, if you want more info/links/etc. i’m also 99% of the time comfortable sharing my builds/rooms with other people, so feel free to ask ! 

in posts where it’s only an interior shot, i often just ... make a box and decorate the inside. sometimes, i build a lot but only decorate the rooms as i need them. other times, i obsessively decorate every nook and cranny of it. really, it depends ! my trick for Large Places is to slice portions of the lot and save them individually (alam palace, for example, is ... three different lots, one for the front yard, one for the back yard, and one for the interiors).

some of my favorite builds are by vms creations (my willow creek is exclusively their builds dsfkjgkl), ardazek (for monumental stuff and my windenburg city buildings), pixelplayground (also city stuff), and regencysims4 (their houses & ones they reblog). i will say, i often redecorate the interiors of the places i download, altho not always. i also get things from the gallery from time to time ! if you’re very specific about keywords and/or allow custom content, you can find some neat stuff. google search also yields good gallery builds.

for furniture and build items, a lot of it is felixandre, thejim07, harrie, goldensanctuarysims, themarblemortal, regalsims, plus folks like shinokcr over at thesimsresource. i am a clown who occasionally pays real human money for pixel items :^) but tsr is worth it, imo, bc i go on massive download sprees like..... weekly asdjhfgkjhkl 

my general closing tips would be: 

search for things on google images & pinterest ! a lot of times, you can go down a rabbit hole of similar items until you find things you like, creators you like, etc. 

if you’re storytelling instead of straight-up playing the game, think about angles and scale as if you were building a film or stage set. you can save time and energy by only constructing aspects that will be visible or used ! there are entire streets that are just ....... mostly flat walls with decorations !!!! that’s basically what the first two shots in this post are
