Hi uhh idk how to say it but any tips on writing in general? I really wanna write my story I have stored in my doc but I don’t know where to start.

hello!! i am very honored that you came to ME to ask because i love to talk about writing, so thank you :) with that being said this might get a little long so ill put everything under a readmore, but all of my advice can be summarized like this

tl;dr: just start!!!

i KNOW. in my soul. that there's genuinely nothing more every aspiring writer hates to hear than "just start" lol but it really does come down to that. just start. whatever you put on the page doesnt have to be PERFECT, it just has to be there. my first drafts for anything are never solid. my initial drafts are NEVER the quality of the final

and its through careful, consistent rewriting that it becomes something more palatable and fun/easy to read. what ive noticed a lot of new writers do (and i used to be very prone to this as well) is that they go into their drafts expecting to drop their final product there, and aim for perfection. i cannot stress enough that perfection is THE ENEMY in literature. you can rewrite things thousands of times for it to turn out imperfect in the end, and thats OKAY. you'll end up with a draft you like eventually, but don't expect yourself to find it right away. it takes me a lot of consistent writing sessions to have a paragraph that im satisfied with. itll come to you naturally

but the best advice i can offer is really just ... START. open google docs and just write down your thought process, whatever that looks like for you. maybe its the summarisation of a few scenes you like, maybe its a chunk of an out of context paragraph. whatevers in your head, put it on paper and see where you can go from there. thats really the only way you can start

outside of that some of my big things are being consistent and READING. i write for at minimum half an hour every day (not always fic lol! i am a creative writing major, am working on my manuscript and also trying to get published in some small-scale literary magazines and sites. so im always working on something, basically) and its probably the only thing in my life i am super consistent about. maintaining a habit and making yourself write even when you dont "feel like it" or cant find motivation is the best way to keep writing long term. and reading, well, how i like to put it to my friends is that creativity is like a well. you cant keep drawing from it without filling it up eventually. you need good writing and good words to inspire you so you can keep drawing from your creative well. when im not writing im reading and you should be too. you really cant have one habit without the other

are really immersing myself in the world that i've created for my silly little guys. i am, at all times of the day, immersed into my stories one way or another. im almost constantly curating pinterest boards, or making playlists, or sharing it with my friends (the last one is highly important. the best way to stay encouraged is to have someone to share with) and so theres not really a day when im not thinking about what i want to write to some extent

but yeah basically thats all of the advice i can offer. write, write, write and don't be afraid for it to be not perfect. nobody is perfect, you are human. so just have fun with it

This is my first anon here, as I typically only read the anons for my girlfriend on this page. So I apologize if this isn't that good. But I just finished watching Priscilla, and let me say this here and now. IN DEFENSE OF JACOB ELORDI: He is is a FANTASTIC Elvis. I would not have anyone else be Elvis in terms of this movie. He fits the vibes of this movie perfectly, he fits Elvis perfectly in this movie. I'm not saying Austin Butler is a bad Elvis, he's amazing. But he doesn't FIT this movie, at all. If I saw Austin Butler on screen as Elvis in the Priscilla movie, it just wouldn't fit. It really wouldn't.

Yeah, Austin has that Lana Del Rey vibe about him. But he has a Lana vibe when he's blonde, not when he's black haired. Not just this but his face is more suited for a Baz Lurhmann movie, not for an A24 Sofia Coppola movie. When watching this movie on screen, you really cannot envision anyone else as Elvis, not even Austin Butler.

The other reason why Jacob did so well as Elvis in the Priscilla movie compared to Austin. Is because Austin's movie "ELVIS" mainly and solely FOCUSES on Elvis himself. Priscilla- doesn't. Priscilla is focused on Priscilla, not on Elvis. So due to this, they needed to find an actor that could be Elvis, but not look like a full mimic of Elvis, just- have Elvis' voice down, body mannerisms down, and as I said, someone who FIT the movie. Who FITS the vibe of the movie, and also has great chemistry with Cailee Spaeny.

It bothers me how people are giving this masterpiece of a movie a 1 and a 2 purely because Elvis is played by Jacob Elordi. I'm sorry but if you have a true and real passion for movies, and for cinematography, you would SEE why Austin wasn't chosen, and you'd also give this movie a shot.

I loved this movie, I really did. I'd rate it an 8/10, it was such a pretty and aesthetic movie. I won't spoil anything but it was genuinely such a good film. Sorry for the long anon.

i thought jacob was great, and obviously he can't control how tall he is but i think that was a factor of what took me out of it and made me see him as more "nate jacobs playing elvis" in the serious moments. like i get what people are saying in that sofia cast people with a height diff like that on purpose to show the power dynamic. but as an elvis fan who *knows* he was not that tall it didn't work for me. and i mean- she said the movie isn't for elvis fans so that's alright! the average viewer isn't someone who knows how tall elvis was haha. just my perspective. i thought he really pulled off the elvis of it all in the more lighthearted moments and was pleasantly surprised that he did when his focus in his portrayal was obv the darker side. (since you've seen the movie you'll know what i'm referring to with "the salute thing". that CRACKED me up and felt so in tune with how "goofy" elvis could be at times, and i've been wondering if it was scripted or if jacob improv-ed it. i hope sofia releases the screenplay someday like they did for elvis 2022, i wanna see it!)

so first of all it’s a good time to mention i have a content sideblog @aroacearrowace for my fics n art bc i have like 6k posts on this blog and none of them are coherent. that blog is the one u will see coherency on. this one is chaos and horrors and a tag system that only i can navigate. as u can see, i’m posting on this one. so we’re going to be crazy tonight

usually i’m like not active on tumblr at all bc discord is My True Home. so usually u will just see me going feral on discord BUT i am currently thinking abt @andizoidart​‘s boy and idk their discord/if they have one/what kind of servers they’re in so now i’m just going to b going feral on here for the next however long it takes to fic idea.

anyway i spent so long just explaining my incoherency so now u will witness the me

first of all: ghost apples! they’re really cool. i want to squish one in my hands like soap. watch it break like glass. very stimmie very gender very ogh. my immediate keyword associations: ice, glass, ghost. i could EASILY make an oc sans that’s all of those things and then shove them in to kiss dream and nightmare on the mouth but that’s the easy route. what i want to do is use ghost apples as a theme to an overarching story full of slowburn and suffering.

(prepare for technical writing terms that were literally made up by me and never elaborated on)

i usually write in a very metaphorical, emotional way. when you read each line of my work, i want it to make you feel an emotion and carry you to the next paragraph, which makes you feel a different emotion, guiding you on a journey of my very own design. metaphors. i like metaphors

now the keywords i chose were “ice,” “glass,” and “ghost.” i have two options here: make each segment of the story pertain to a different keyword, or make each character pertain to a different keyword. i like metaphors! so i’m doing the latter.

easily, i come up with:

nightmare - cold like ice, frozen to the touch. standoffish. you know elsa from frozen? like in that one scene the do u wanna build a snowman scene? yeah yeah that.

dream - glass. instantly, glass, bc of the statue thing. fragile, delicate, easy to break. i really really like a dream who can kick ur butt for no reason whatsoever so i have elected to put my own twist on this: dream is treated like glass, but he’s made of stone. (see what i did there?)

with that, nightmare feels like ice, but is treated like fire. dream is treated like glass, but feels like stone.

then, somnus.

definitely. would b very fun. if somnus felt and was treated the same, as a foil to dream and nightmare.

somnus’s keyword was ghost. i’m realllyyyy torn on what to do with this one bc there’s so many options.

i could literally kill him off, and then make him a ghost, but that’s like, obvious. there’s not a metaphor in that. also what’s the point of writing a fic about a character if u kill them off in the first five seconds.

according to andi’s post, he has dysfunctional magic. instantly makes me think of a disabled metaphor, i like it. he searches for artificial magic, and he’s a little worm guy. goes digging in the dirt and pulls out a fistful of worms. brilliant, absolutely brilliant.

it might be a lot of fun to change the dreamtale story around a lot. i want nightmare to get corrupted, that’s definitely staying. maybe i want to give them wings, for funsies. not for any particular reason, just funsies. buuuut idk if i want dream to get stoned in a physical sense.

my metaphor was that nightmare feels like ice, is treated like fire. dream is treated like glass, is made of stone... so i think what if i made that metaphor really really apparent with the apple incident part of the story

i really like the idea that in like, any dreamtale au, both dream and nightmare get abused. nightmare is physically abused, yeah, but dream is emotionally abused. with somnus, it might be fun to include neglect as a third form of abuse, just so we get all of the abuse. i never said i was going to be nice to these characters

i think that, with somnus left in the dust, and dream being treated as though he’s made of glass, and nightmare being treated like a threat, dream would be the first to act. dream eats the apple, first.

i’m guessing the sort of idea behind somnus is that he’s the wood? dream is the gold apples, nightmare the black, somnus is the wood. so i’m not doing a shattered dream scenario bc i wanna stick with each of those themes. idk what the positive apples would do to you if you ate one, bc like in canon they just make you really lucky?? i guess???? but in this i want something DRAMATIC to happen. since this is just a fic outline i’m metaphorically inserting brackets that say [something dramatic happens that get all three triplets fighting against the villagers]

nightmare gets corrupted like ice, dream like stone, and somnus..? hm. i mean i have to figure out what somnus does to the tree bc i don’t think it’s good to just up and eat tree bark from some random apple tree. i don’t think that’s healthy. there was a mention of a palismen in the post i think unless i read it wrong so i think,,,,, mb the tree starts falling apart bc the other two are eating the apples so then the tree just goes YOINK ur getting stolen into the tree now.

and since somnus’s prompt is ghost i think. i think. i think it would b very fun if the fic was about dream and nightmare trying to find their brother.

Hi! For some reason, your Locked Tomb resurrection story has constantly been on my mind ever since I first read it a few weeks ago. I don't have an Ao3 account (yet) so it took me a while to find the fic (once the brain worms got too intense and I knew I had to reread or I would go insane)- but I am so glad I did!

A bunch of my jumbled thoughts about it:

Marta is suddenly a really interesting character?? I will admit, she didn't really captivate me that much when I read the actual books but the way she's portrayed in this fic made me abruptly care a lot about her. I'm really curious to see how she will contribute to the story going forward

Magnus and Abigail, on the other hand, I did very much care about on the first read of TLT and your fic only made me love them more! IDK what it is about their characterization, I just felt like they brought a very distinct warmth to the scenes, and it made the moments where their grief shows through all the more poignant. Their relationship with the fourth house teens is obviously completely heartbreaking (one thing that each of the reunion scenes with them had in common was that they all made me fucking cry) and it just makes for the perfect combination of hurt and healing. It's the amount of love and care that they have for those kids and the way that it pains them to see them suffering- more importantly it's the fact that you wrote a story that could make me feel this way about people who aren't even real. So much talent T_T

There is too much hate in this fandom directed towards one (1) child cult leader with serious issues, and it sure isn't Harrow

Your story is one of the few that actually aligns with my interpretation of Silas Octakiseron. And does it well. The guilt and the repression and the need to repent for every action and the justifications...it all shows up in the way that you wrote him, and it shows up perfectly. I honestly don't know what you're going to do with Silas next, but whatever it is I know that it will be cleverly devised and I cannot wait.

Harrow....baby....I can't even

She's so alone and just completely undone by Gideon's loss...any fics that take place right after the conclusion of Gideon the Ninth must be hard to tackle because of how apparent Gideon's absence is. It manifests itself in so many ways in this one, but in Harrow most of all. She's lost her sense of purpose, and so she needs another one. She finds an anchor in the task of resurrecting people, and she seems to be at least alive on a functional level right now- but it does make me wonder what will happen after all of this is done. Where will Harrow even go? What will she do? Will she have the strength to do anything any more, or will she spend the rest of her life repenting for all of the ways in which she failed Gideon?

(Silas parallels, yet again ^^^)

The only minor complaint I have about this story at all is that the timeline is kind of confusing (probably just a me thing TBH. I don't read into this stuff very well) and I don't really get how much time passes between each of the resurrections. Like is it only a few hours or a day or so etc.?

And I have so many more thoughts. My brain is literally about to split. Now you can see why this could not fit into a single Ao3 comment

In conclusion: absolutely scrumptious fic, nourished the Locked Tomb brain worms more than sufficiently and managed to go beyond recommended levels of both hurt and comfort just to spite me, an inferior author of both, with how it can be done near perfectly. The day that the next chapter comes out I will become the absolute most annoying version of myself and it may even be enough to cure my depression. Or make it worse. Either works, as long as it's as remarkable as everything you've written so far!!

marta!!!! i'm SO glad that she's a character i've made you care about in this fic, and that my take on silas strikes true for you. those two are my little pile of personal high investment blorbos. the second and the eighth are My Little Guys and i'm absolutely obsessed. they weren't there much in the books, for obvious reasons, but what WAS there got me so good and now i can't stop rotating them in my brain. i keep waffling on whether my take on silas particularly makes.... sense? so i'm always thrilled to hear when someone enjoys my presentation of him.

especially bc that like....... captivates me. the parallels between silas and harrow, both that exist and that sit sorta just past the presented in what can be extrapolated. it makes me want to chew drywall. the parallels, the reflections. (the siken quote right - they are the same and they are not the same. they are the same and they hate each other for it.) i could write one million words about these two and then write one million more after that. this fic is a little window into all of my very big and very complicated feelings about silas and harrow and the potential of putting them in a room and making them deal with each other. augh.

AND THE FIFTH...... i'm SO glad they had the impact i wanted them to here, that was part of why i sent abigail with harrow in her journeys through the penumbra. i'm a big believer in dark or sad or difficult stories needing moments to breathe and take a second, to show that there ARE good things in this world and this life. it makes the absence of those things or when the sources of those things are hurt hit that much harder. i'm SO thrilled i could manage to get you to feel even MORE abt them and their relationship with the fourth. that whole thing makes me SO upset especially getting to contrast the fifth and the way they interact with the fourth and how the fourth view them back, and how they've impacted the fourth's view of the world. and then the way that the other teens and young people around here - you've got 17 year old harrow, 16 year old silas, 18 year old gideon, judith is in her early 20s, even the sixth are like. baby years old and they're doing better than some of the others but oy vey.

the fourth feel so much different than the others and it's not just about their age, they're not that much younger than harrow. silas is only two years older than jeannemary. they're so different and it's not because they're so young, though that is a factor. it's that they're young in a way that harrow and gideon, and by extrapolation the others, just never got to be. because they had magnus and abigail, and that made a world of difference. im SO deep in my feelings about it 100% of the time.

about the timeline - i promise that's a bigol 'it's not you it's me' moment sdlkfjsd, that's my big flaw in writing XD i can either nail down the setting or the timeline but never both. if i have a coherent setting, i have no idea what day it is. if i have a concrete timeline woven into the narrative, the country it's set in slips out of my hands. such is the way!! at any rate, i don't even know what the timeline really is, but it's way closer to a couple of hours between resurrections at most.

again, seriously, thank you so so so so so so much for this. i can't put into words how beyond delighted this made me, and i've been reveling in it since i got it. the next chapter should be coming out soon (though i know i sound like a broken record about that by now lmao) and i really hope you enjoy it when it does!!! and i know this was a joke but don't let anything i've written discourage you from your own writing! i feel the same way so much of the time about other stuff i've read, and it feels so much better to turn it into motivation. like oh this is exactly what i want to do, what makes this work for me? etc. anyways. thank you so much, again. i'm so thrilled you liked it enough to write me a message like this about it. really, really made my week.

Funnily enough, I actually didn't ship it while watching the show the first time until literally the season 3 finale. See, I believed that Hannibal was manipulating Will the whole time and it was basically a horror story about poor Will being brainwashed into wanting to murder people and all that, and while I enjoyed the homoeroticism a lot and even read some fic, it's just not the kind of thing I'm really into, I find moustache twirling villailn/woobie victim boring as ship material.

I was expecting throughout the entirety of the Red Dragon arc that Hannibal was somehow playing a long manipulative game and he’d reveal it in the finale, so I guess when it turned out that nope, he had no plan he was just going wherever the fuck Will took him up to and including his death, it made me reconsider everything.

So the day after the finale aired I marathoned the whole show again in like three days with eyes wide open and saw everything in a new light and really fell head over heels for the show.

What are your favorite things about the ship?

Hannibal's super intense feelings. The parallel between him and Franklyn. Hannibal trying to eat Will's brain to get over him, failing, and going to the opposite extreme and spending 3 years in jail right after because the brain eating was like, a last-ditch attempt to save himself from his own feelings. Will falling in love over the course of season 2 not despite wanting to kill Hannibal but because of it, as illustrated through very sexually suggestive murder fantasies.

Will asserting his own agency at the end of season 1. Hannibal's smile in the last shot of season 1 not because he "won" or anything but because Will knows who he is now. Will pulling a gun on Hannibal. Their murdery "with my hands" dirty talk. The ortorlan blowjob scene, instant classic. Hannibal letting Dolarhyde shoot him not to save Will or anything, but just because that's how Will wanted them to die. The fact that Dolarhyde only kills families so it was basically Hannibal accepting a marriage proposal when you think about it. Will changing his mind and killing Dolarhyde with Hannibal instead. "I gave you a child, if you recall."

The fucking tearfully smug look on Hannibal's face when he kills Abigail. Will fantasizing about killing Jack and running away with Hannibal. Bedelia's exasperation with Hannibal's pining and her manipulating him because of it in season 3. Everything about Sorbet, Tome Wan, and Digestivo, aka the three best episodes of anything ever. Man I could go on forever but I gotta stop.

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?

I think the most likely scenario is Hannibal and Will killing other serial killers, but I think if it came down to it Hannibal is more likely to give up murder than Will is to take up murder. Hannibal already functionally gave up murder not even for a relationship, but just in the hopes of seeing Will again and like, not being forgotten, when he turned himself in in Digestivo. Also I think if they do start killing killers it'd 100% be Will's idea, not Hannibal's. Hannibal is not rocking that boat now that he's finally in it by trying to manipulate or force Will into murder again lol. At best I could see him handing Will a newspaper detailing a new serial killer with a hopeful expression lol.

BnHA Chapter 289: Looks Like the Gang’s All Here

Previously on BnHA: Horikoshi was all “you guys don’t really need to know what’s gonna happen to Deku and Shouto right now” and cut away to Toga and Ochako before anyone could get a word in. Skeptic utilized the power of Freak Shounen Coincidence to magically zero in on Ochako and Tsuyu amongst the fleeing crowd. Toga was all “IS THAT OCHAKO” and immediately leaped down to fight them, ignoring Spinner’s heartfelt speeches about Villain Found Family because fight now, hug later!! Down in the streets of some unidentified crumbling city, Ochako was approached by a sweet old lady and was all “I better help this sweet old lady who is definitely not leading me into a trap”, which unfortunately turned out to be poor decision-making on her part. Anyway so now she and Toga are going to throw down. AND ALSO, P.S., BEST JEANIST IS STILL ALIVE, and that doesn’t really have anything to do with anything right now, but BY GOLLY I JUST HAD TO SHOUT IT FROM THE ROOFTOPS.

Today on BnHA: Iida and Hadou are all “is it our turn yet”, and Horikoshi is all “yes”, and so the two of them finally burst onto the scene and are all “hello Shouto, Gigantomachia is on his way, btw do you need help” and so they all get ready to fight Tomura together. Meanwhile in Unnamed Ochako And Toga Fight Town, Toga is all “what’s up Ochako, oh is this the All Might doll Deku gave you, I guess you must like Deku as well, just like me, we truly are the same, btw I can use other people’s quirks now” before she vanishes in a flurry of knives and ambiguity, as mysteriously as she came. So that’s a thing that happened. The chapter ends with Gigantomachia and the League STOMPIN’ ONTO THE SCENE, JUST IN TIME FOR ENDEAVOR TO WAKE UP AND BE ALL “OHHHHH SHIT.” YOU’RE DAMN RIGHT, “OH SHIT.” Finally the pieces are in place for Dabi to reveal his true identity to Hadou and Iida, JUST LIKE WE ALL EXPECTED.

In Brazil there’s a case making headlines about a woman that slept with a homeless man. Nothing to worry about there, right? Except the woman is knowingly bipolar and was in the middle of a manic psychotic episode (diagnosed by psychiatrists later and supported by her mother in law’s testimony that was there at the time that when she saw the homeless man she was saying he was her husband and God at the same time). The woman’s husband punched the homeless man and it became a case of assault, that’s how the media found out. The woman was sent to a clinic to get treatment. While she was there, the media interviewed the homeless man countless times, and he, as a very well articulate person, revealed all the details of the intercourse, including details about the woman. He then became a subcelebrity here in Brazil, being invited to VIP parties and giving speeches about any sort of subject in “life coaches” pages. Idk who is reading this post and how the law is where you are, but here in Brazil it is very much written and specified in the paragraph about rape that it will be considered rape if the person, because of young age or mental illness, cannot fully consent to the act. So this is a rape case we’re talking about. The woman was already discharged from the mental clinic and said to a newspaper this ruined her life and I believe her. People made a rapist famous, a rapist well aware that he is a rapist (because he has shown hismself as a very well articulate and smart person in all his later interviews and a woman saying that a stranger was her husband and God is easily spotted as someone having mental issues by any regular human being), ruined a woman’s life with media coverage (not even mentioning the rape itself) and what’s the excuse to make this man famous and invite him into high society circles? Well, the right-wing says he is a legend, THE pick-up-artist, a man capable of making any woman want to sleep with him. And the left-wing says we cannot judge him because a homeless person has the right to have a sex life (and it’s true but it doesn’t include rape).  I don’t think many people will read this because I have a small blog and this is a long post but the thing is: men will protect rapists. Conservative men will glorify them. Liberal and even self proclaimed communist men will say he was just fulfilling his needs and it’s a human right. Men will always find a way to protect rapists. They’ll ruin a woman’s life with tabloid headlines revealing her name and face and make her the butt of a joke. But nothing will happen to the rapist. Hey Pia! I have a few questions about your writing history if you're cool with talking about it. At what age did you start writing? How have you noticed your writing improve over the years? What advice would you give writers that are just starting out? Thanks!

I've been asked a lot of these questions before so hopefully you don't mind a linkspam! Because past Pia can be pretty eloquent sometimes:

1. How I started out writing, and how I ended up here.

2. Things about my writing that have changed over the years (idk about improvements).

3. How to deal with writer's block.

How to stay motivated or develop a habit (also! Also - most importantly, the advice I'd give to writers just starting out would change drastically depending on whether you're doing it as a hobby, whether you want to do it as a serious hobby, or a career. There's definitely no 'one size fits all' advice).

On pushing through with insecurity.

Tbh the biggest piece of advice I can give to new writers is that you have to write some crap in order to get to your best writing. There's no way but through. And you may still enjoy that less good writing to get to your best writing! I still like some of my oldest stories, I just wouldn't necessarily...put 'em somewhere people can see them. But some I did! But there's no avoiding writing that feels clunky, or doesn't seem quite right, or doesn't quite nail the character, or any number of things.

The best metaphor for this is the garden metaphor - your best writing is like a beautiful garden, it blooms and blossoms, there's lots of different things to look at and yet it's still somehow cohesive.

Guess what grows the best flowers?

Shit. Well, manure. Manure grows the best flowers.

You need some shit on that garden bed if you want to have a garden in the first place, and the only way to get it in writing, is to...well...just write it.

That might not seem reassuring at all (in which case please ignore it) but I used to find it very reassuring for my perfectionist brain which was like 'no writing unless it's the best writing.' But realising that I had not only permission to write badly, but that it was actually a mandatory part of the process to write well (unless you're an exception to the rule who just writes well from the outset -> this is rare) made me feel like writing anything was better than writing nothing.

And guess what? It was! :D

We had a saying in our old Write Club, which was 'all words is good words' - yes, grammatically incorrect, and kind of on purpose, the whole point was writing anything - even the worst sentence in the world, is still going to be an improvement on a blank page, and will get your brain primed to think about words and sentences and paragraphs and writing more.

You cannot Hermione your way through the part where you're going to write some stuff that's not always your favourite stuff - you can't research and be book smart and read articles etc. and avoid it.

And you know what? The part of writing where you're metaphorically putting crap on the garden bed? That can still be an awesome and fun part of writing, especially when you start to see the buds come up. Because it never takes as long as you think, once you get started.

Heyy, just wanted to say I LOVE your stories (and all you headcanons and tags hehe) I'm new here and wanted to ask how and when you started writing fanfiction for star wars and if you have any tips 😊

hello! thank you for the kind words :’) and of course, welcome!! 

so if we want to get really technical about things, i started writing star wars fic like,,,,waaaay back in 2013, and i kinda cringe a little when i think of those fics now because lol i was thirteen years old then--and i wrote for a little while until maybe 2016-ish? and then took a break because of mental health things, and then got back into writing fic in the past year and a half or so! 

as for the how, i wanted to write star wars fic mostly because as a thirteen year old, i was devastated by the season five finale (back then, that was when the show just got cancelled and the season five finale was the only series finale we were gonna get!), and i just kinda wanted to write all these stories about the tcw fam actually being happy. filling in the gaps and all. (lol considering how my gut reaction to the tcw season seven finale was also to write as much fic as possible, i can safely say that some things just don’t change.) 

as for tips! i got a little into writing gen fic specifically here, but as for writing fic in general: (and under the cut because i,,,as usual, went off for a while.)

1. rewatch/reread source material! this is something i usually do when i’m trying to refresh my memory on a certain episode--i won’t watch through the whole thing, sometimes i’ll just kind of jump around, but i like to get some quick look back into the source stuff to put myself in the right headspace to explore how to extend/expand the story somehow. 

of course, if you’re writing something that’s an AU then you don’t really have to worry about this, but!! rewatching the source can also just be super helpful when you’re trying to characterize properly/try to get a feel for what the characters’ voices are like. 

2. wookiepedia is your  best friend, but if you don’t have enough info on something, either search through fanon star wars meta or!! just make up something on your own! like, i cannot tell you the amount of times i’ve wanted to tear my hair out because i couldn’t find enough information on x or if i had to stop and be like “wait, but does star wars even have y??” sometimes, wookiepedia is helpful for providing those answers, and other times, blogs like @gffa really provides a big, broad look at all the stuff in star wars, and her blog kinda runs like wookiepedia itself, so i can guarantee that you’ll find some useful stuff if you’re ever kind of lost about what certain jedi customs/culture or in general, what different cultures were like in the galaxy far, far away. 

but also, as i’ve mentioned, i think it’s okay to just kinda ignore the technical stuff and just make something up in star wars as you go along. you don’t like that glass in star wars is called transparisteel? then use glass. you’re not sure if star wars even celebrates the new year? screw it, why not? you’re the writer--you get creative license!

3. there is no such thing as “too much” of one trope. so, idk if you might struggle with this, but just in case you do--sometimes, fic writers will hit a wall and be like “no i can’t post this because so many people have already written about this/used this trope/etc.” to that, i say pffft, nah. there’s a post floating around here on tumblr about a cake analogy and how like,,,to you, you might have just brought another cake to a party with already so many cakes, and you might feel kinda embarrassed about that, but to the large majority of people? all they see is more cake, and who doesn’t love more cake? 

what i’m basically trying to get at here is!! write whatever you want and don’t worry about if someone’s already done it, because everyone in fandom lives to see their favorite storylines expanded over and over and over again/everyone lives to see their favorite tropes used over and over and over again. fic is wonderful for that very reason, and you shouldn’t deprive yourself of enjoying that. 

4. this might seem kinda trivial, but spellcheck and formatting is...mostly important. the unfortunate thing about fic is that sometimes people will click out the second they see a huge block of text like so: 

“this is just a practice run,” i say as i start this paragrah. i don’t really know what i’m writing about but this is an example, and i know that this is probably going to look really, really ugly on the screen but here we go oh the things i do for explaining fic i already know that this has gone long enough but who is to stop me you know? wait no i haven’t made any spelling errors yet to prove my point so okay let me think of a common spelling error i can’t think of any right now but hm let’s see i will causally say that i have made a spelling error. oh look! i have made a spelling error (well, not a spelling error, more like a mix-up of words) because you can tell that instead of writing casually which would be more correct i wrote causally and those two are very different things. but there are other spelling errors that can sometimes be a turn-off for readers like when they notice that the k in kenobi isn’t capitilized and once or twice that’s all fine and most people will overlook that, but if you do that consistently then most people will be turned off and click into another fic and oh dear it seems that i am actually explaining things so i guess that means i should stop with this ugly paragraph and actually move forward. “move on!” i shout to myself now. (and just pretend that something like this continues for a good two or three pages.)

do you see how ugly that is? it’s an eye-strain to most people when they read, and you can write the most beautiful fic in the world, but if the formatting and the spelling is off, then most people will move to a different fic. (which is, again, unfortunate, especially for younger and newer writers, but! ‘tis a thing that comes with fic.) 

5. have fun! don’t get yourself caught up with appealing to the crowd. write what you want to write first and foremost, because at the end of the day, it’s you who’s putting in the work and the effort to craft a story, and if you’re about to invest your time and energy into anything in your free time, then it should be something that brings you at least some joy and comfort. so go on and write, and keep writing if you enjoy it! no one can take that away from you.

hello, hello! i’m looking for a specific fic, and i hoped you or your followers could help? modern wei ying is following a webcomic about mo xuanyu/lan wangji, and he chokes to death while reading and wakes up in the body of wei wuxian. wwx is a minor character whose murder in the first chapter kickstarted the whole plot, and wei ying is desperately trying to stay alive and somehow ends up falling for lwj in the meanwhile.

That’s it! Thank you for reading - it feels very self-indulgent to type up all of these, but I will honestly take most chances to relive the intense and wonderful experience of reading this book for the first time, which often means looking back at my own notes and sometimes means sharing them with people. Also, I really love reading liveblogs/real-time book thoughts, so here is one from awhile ago ... all at once.

It’s ... mostly just character names, with a variety of words that express my enthusiasm and feeling (love, lol, wow, yes, excuse me...). Gen is the biggest because I said his name 115 times! Here are some totals for the other characters who came up a lot:

These don’t fully represent how much I had to say about them, because I didn’t always refer to people by name or title ... which kind of explains why Costis’s total is ridiculously high compared to how much he is in the book -  I likely have more notes about other characters, but I didn’t need to bring up their names because they were already present in the scenes I was taking notes on (for example, I think I talked about Relius more than Teleus, the magus, or Kamet, but many of those just referred to him as he, because it was obvious to me who I meant). But also I was just looking for Costis! Anyway. My use of names and titles for the monarchs also really illustrates how much this book reshaped the way I think of these characters’ relationship to them, Gen’s and Irene’s especially.

It’s representative of my feelings about this series that I wrote “I love them” about so many combinations of characters. Who, exactly? And how many times? Well...

Musing on the tags about SF in the latests (or not?) post :

I think FE16 is going to have lasting consequences on fandom.

Right now, we can talk about Zephiel’s goals, or what Grima wanted for the world when he was red capslocking, or even what Arvis’s goal was.

With FE16?

The game is bare bones, so a lot of people (myself included i’m sure) came up with a bajillion of headcanons to make sense of it. And then we built the game around those headcanons.

Poor people are suffering in Fodlan because there’s a shortage of food every winter? I don’t see it. But I can’t rebuke it either, because hey, we do not visit Fodlan.

We don’t know a thing about that place.

So even in SF’s general board, I’ve noticed a lot of posters are trying to sidestep FE16.

When someone says Arvis wanted to spare Silesse from his imperial annexion? You can point out the treasure/dev note/side material that says his army went there and killed Rahna, and while Arvis was pissed they still installed a governor.

When someone says, because she’s the most divise part of the fandom right now, Edel wanted to spare the Kingdom but only had to attack them in CF because Rhea hid there? You can point out how in the 3 others routes the goal is total unification of Fodlan, how destroying Firdhiad has been a main goal since the beginning or how Dimitri must be killed and cannot have a special “spare” cutscene like Claude, there’ll still be endless debates around this fact.

Let’s say, tomorrow, I decide to reactivate my old account on SF and make a post on the general thread about, idk, “dragons and passivity, comparison between Rhea and Deghinsea”. I’d start on the premise that Rhea ignored humans and let them rule themselves, instead focusing on her mom. As a result of her passivity, some people in Fodlan are suffering.

Then, I’m pretty sure I’d get some comment disagreeing with that premise because the archbishop doesn’t let humans rule themselves she controls them, she crowns the Emperor of Adrestia (which is wrong if Edel’s coronation scene is anything to go by!), she has a huge influence in the Kingdom (so huge that the kingdom’s regional branch tries to kill her!) and the alliance doesn’t count, because it’s a merchant republic and no one cares about them.

And the focus would only be on this, and not on the comparison i want to make - imagine someone reading a first paragraph of a 10 pages long essay, and not reading the rest, only challenging the first. That’s the problem.

And I might be wrong, really, so maybe I would be sprouting 10k words out of thin air.

But this is the problem.

Since you cannot argue with certainty about facts in FE16, no matter what you try to write about it, even if it’s only mentionned in a footnote, it will fall.

For example, I know in FE16 that Lysithea likes sweets. It is very important.

I don’t know what Rufus, the actual regent of the Kingdom, thinks of the Church, or even of the Alliance. I don’t know if Gloucester wants to become a vassal state of Adrestia because Adrestia is great, or if Count Gloucester only sides with them to avoid civilians casualties.

What I am supposed to write regarding FE16 then? What can we say, with certainty, about FE16?

People like sweets? No one gives a fuck.

Dragons and humans being unable to coexist? The hidden dark side of “Holy Blood”? The game doesn’t give a fuck, and depending on a certain ending, Rhea dying means, at least in one situation, the crest issue is resolved.

Even if a new FE is going to be released, FE16 will still be a dark horse polluting fandom. 

The old times where people were a bit frisky to post anything regarding Ike and Soren’s relationship for fear of a certain someone hijacking the post are way behind us now.

With FE16, the landmines have mutliplied. Dragons? Regimes? Soft-power? Passivity? Everything became a landmine.

And it sucks.

18. Describe an essay/story you wrote in school

omfg ok... if its ok im gonna do both an essay and a story if thats ok bc i LOVeD gr.12 english and was really happy with a few of my things. idk how specific u want the description so im gonna get really specific omg feel free to not read this lskjfslkf:

welp one of the last essays i wrote in high school was about the great gatsby. it was like. 2.4k words long, and all about truth vs. reality and gatsby’s journey from creating this ideal life for himself in his head and trying to replicate it in real life and how it all eventually crumbled bc real life cant be ideal and blah blah blah. basically, i was just describing how he daydreamed and then his eventual demise in not being able to accept that the daydreams would never be perfectly replicated in the real world. it was a critical analytical essay and i basically just followed gatsby’s life in each paragraph i think? except we were encouraged to make it a universal thing, not a character study, so by “followed his life” i mean i just used diff parts of his life as my pieces of evidence lmfao... the first paragraph was about how ppl build up their ideal lives in their head, the second paragraph was abt how with the right incentive ppl seek to actually build said ideal life but...outside their head... and the third paragraph was the inevitability of reality falling short of the perfectness they’d imagined in their minds (i mostly used his relationship w daisy as the evidence for that last one lmfao). anyway, it was called “how to save a life” bc i thought i was funny w the whole ideal life crumbling and... the end...anyway idek. i was really proud of that essay, i liked my ideas and it was fairly easy to come up with. wording it was a bitch and after i handed it in i remember reading the doc and not understanding a single sentence and then panicking but. thats not important i got 100 so go me!!. (also: yes i did in fact pull it up to answer this bc i forgot kfjslkjfslkj)

anyway. so gr. 12 english was especially fun bc that was the year it wasnt all about essays. based on the text we read, we either got essay prompts or story prompts. for frankenstein, we got like three pages of quotes and were told to pick one and write a creative piece on it. i chose “I shall commit my thoughts to paper, it is true; but that is a poor medium for the communication of feeling”. anyway, i split the quote up into three parts and used those as page breaks to break up three diff sections. the whole thing was just three different stories of three different people in three different situations encountering the same problem. a girl who was trying to write a eulogy for her mom but not knowing the right words to use to do her mom justice, a boy with an oversensitivity issue trying to journal his thoughts but not being able to describe the way it feels properly, and an artist who’s trying to describe an art piece of hers but not knowing how to with words. i was really happy with that one too. :)

(unrelated but i also wrote an essay on j*an j*ques r**sseau and bitched about him the entire essay lmfao but anyway)

19. Whats sole life advice everyone should know?

man, ive barely been alive for 2 decades i jfslkfjslkjfks idek. heres one thing i would have loved to hear at some point: it’s okay to fail at some things, and it is okay to fail at them more than once. heres something ive just learned myself, i guess: people, more often than not, really appreciate it when you wish them a happy birthday, or tell them ‘good job’ or whatever. even if it feels awkward or embarrassing to say it at first.
