idk if im just pinterest pilled or what but i really don't understand when people don't like their art being posted there. yes, obviously if it's not linked back to you or is fully uncredited or god forbid the username is edited out, sure, that sucks completely. but i have found over a dozen artists to follow over the years from reposted art i found in there and have reblogged/rted even more that i felt deserved more than just a board save. I've even bought prints of art I've found on there.

I've probably found more artists i like by using pinterest for the last 5 years than i have tumblr. and i get that not everyone who uses pinterest does that or cares, but uncredited art on there usually will have multiple comments asking who the artist is (with people like me telling them). the algorithm is also distressingly accurate, so i have gone down some major rabbit holes and found so much art that i love that i never would have seen otherwise, especially since so many artists are only on twitter and a lot of the art i see can be upwards of ten years old.

like you're obviously completely in your right to not want your art reposted anywhere without your permission and I'm not saying it's the best site in the world, just that there is a bright side to it. several of the people i follow from there have gotten asks saying they were so glad to have found them through pinterest, and they either are not sure how to feel about it, or actively dislike it! like, that person maybe would've never found you if not for that! i just think it's more complicated than "reposting bad."

i think we clown on this site a lot for how much of a nothingburger it can be to have a very high follower count if you’ve been here long enough but trust and believe this site couldn’t pull off in all these years the absolute follower count to activity disconnect that the tiktok algorithm does to creators in a tenth of the time.

like… that shouldn’t even be possible and yet it’s all my videos for the last year or so with this most recent being by far the worst. the almighty algorithm?? not only does it not work but it actively hides your content from your own followers if the algorithm fails you; something you literally can’t control. my accumulated likes reflect that i’ve posted content plenty of people have found massively worthy but that cannot translate to anything if they aren’t seeing it in the first place!!!

worse still people send hate for this shit if you complain at all & genuinely think this is normal and gameable. they treat you like YOU did something wrong and won’t hear anything about it because a big chunk of them have never known anything online except broken algorithms. they’ve never had a curated feed.

like… idk what else to say but it’s wild. you could never fall off on tumblr the way tiktok forces you to fall off and oh my god, it was a very hard thing to unlearn that it isn’t a ding on me as a person or what i bring to the table.

idk if it's modern usamerican thing and the consequence of years of political polarisation of their two-party system escalated by social media algorithms worldwide or just the age we live in, but it feels like every piece of media I watch made in recent years is leaning too heavily into 1) fan service, fanfic tropes and cliches above telling its own unique story, putting things inside as if specifically to feed the fandom culture 2) teaching a moral lesson and insisting their political views upon the viewer in the laziest way imaginable by spelling them out as plainly as humanly possible and mashing as much of them together as they can manage. Like subtext in dialogues isn't an option anymore, everyone must speak as bluntly as possible as to avoid any misunderstandings, having one theme to focus on to explore and present in its complexity isn't an option either, there needs to be an explicit unambiguous stance on every hot topic of today, the continuity of a story as a complete piece of art within its own universe is irrelevant too, it just has to voice its stance plainly on as many things as it can reach. Scenes don't flow smoothly one into another but feel disconnected as if each one has to be made in a way that'd allow to cut it to tik-toks, instagram reels or meme templates. And as a result of that approach, it doesn't feel like watching a story, it doesn't feel like interacting with a work of art, it feels like consuming Content, and above that being lectured, like the fourth wall isn't even there to break at all because every little detail of the story is constantly glancing at you, the audience, the fanbase like "Do you get it? You get what I'm trying to say? This is right, and this is wrong, you understand? You like it? I bet you do, or you're a bad person who's wrong. Here's a meme-able nugget for you, you know what to do *wink*"

Even when my own political preferences align with those on the screen, I can't help but feel annoyed and frustrated, patronised to like a kid watching some damn cartoon for toddlers that's as straightforward about its moral lesson as it can get, with background narrator explaining everything, scraping it of all nuance to be palatable to a 5 year olds with a recap at the end if the episode about "what did we learn today"

I can't stand it. It feels like it exists to please according demographic of people politically more than it is to be a good story and a good work of art. Watching the newer stuff right after watching The Twilight Zone (also really plain in its political stance that it however manages to present by actually focusing on telling good stories with interesting subtext-rich dialogues that feel real, that feel like works if art) the difference is baffling. I don't know. Newer media seems to lack something essential, like I look at it and I just know it won't hold a test of time because besides spitting out political opinions, no matter how well-meaning they might be, on its own it isn't telling a good story. Like imagine looking at it from the future where, let's dream, the controversial opinions of voiced are no longer controversial and just the default. Is it still valuable as a work of art? Is the story it's telling good and solid on its own? For many things made today I feel like the answer would be rather no. I don't know. Does anyone else feel it too?

an update

i feel silly doing these bc on one hand i'm like 'eh who tf cares about what my plans are for writing the next few weeks/months' and on the other hand, i know i hate when authors go from writing consistently to radio silence so...idk. it feels self indulgent and a touch self centered.

but i digress

i'm tired guys. tired of pouring my entire creative soul into these fics and not seeing the engagement. i've whined and moaned about it enough so i'm sure you're like 'jfc shut tf up and get over yourself' (which i mean, fair lol). the thing is, i do write for the love of writing but i also don't want to waste my time if it's not well received. there is something so depressing about spending HOURS on a chapter and having it barely break 100 notes. i know it sounds entitled and it probably is but thats how i feel. its not anyones fault and i know my writing isn't going to be for everyone. it's just...frustrating to go from writing very well received/popular fics to...nothing.

i don't know what's changed that's effected my engagement so much but i've tried everything to capture that magic that my early writings had on here and nothing is working.

i feel wrung out creatively. and also i've noticed a spike in my anxiety around social media lately. i've deleted almost everything off of my phone. and its FREEING. like, i tend to hyper fixate on something to the point where it's just not healthy for me and i think i need to take a bit of a break from online spaces, F1 spaces specifically. i'll still be HERE on tumblr but that's about it.

so what's next for the next few months for me? im going to take it easy, be kind to myself, let the inspiration come as it wants. i have a kernel of an idea for a lando fic but i won't be posting it at all until it's completely finished. probably later this summer. i have plans to work on a little collab project with another writer on an oscar fic too. that'll probably happen later this summer too. and i'm going to rewrite A Package Deal as a OC fic that goes deeper and is longer. That will be posted on AO3 sometime this summer too. i'm also wanting to go and work on the novel i wrote last summer and get it ready for publishing? my goal last year was to have it ready to publish by this summer break in august but i won't be ready for that, so new goal! next summer, the goal is to have it published.

so like, i'll still be around. i'll still be here. i'm still writing. i'm hoping a bit of an absence will maybe reset my algorithm too? lol maybe the tumblr gods will be kind to me again in a few months?
