today the 12yo i babysit told me that they had a special lesson in humanities today about not discriminating or bullying based on identity. i asked if it had been an issue in her class. she said no, and that apparently there was a kid in oklahoma.. "nex," i said, finishing for her. she nodded. i asked if she'd learned much about them, that they were native american too. she hadn't. and she was apalled to learn that, that that aspect of their identity hadn't been part of the lesson. the point she was trying to make, though, the reason she brought it up, was that her teacher misgendered nex while lecturing about how important it was to respect one another. she said she understood to an extent. it took her a little bit to get used to referring to people by different pronouns. but at the same time... her teacher's "mistake" was entirely counter to the point he was trying to make. and he's an adult, i told her. he's the teacher. he isn't new to the world. like the fact that my 12yo had to be the one to correct him when he started referring to nex by the wrong pronouns... i just.. this is why it's so important these kinds of conversations are had. lead with respect. understanding. kindness. integrity.

it’s probably inevitable mission creep from the increasingly transactional nature of the internet and fandom-as-consumerism, which was always gonna happen after corps worked out how much bank there is to make from those weirdo fan people

but like. fandom is sharing. i think we’ve lost that somewhere.
