How did DJ sub find out they were trans and NB respectively? (I like the idea that one of their students used singular they/them and that led to the egg cracking)

As good as that would have been, Nova transitioned young. I can see them figuring out they were NB sometime in college, but by the time they were a professor they were fully NB and using he/they.

When it came to realizing he was trans at the time, I think he just really liked the idea of being a guy. He probably came out to some people he thought were his friends, and they were supportive of him, but didn't take him seriously when he said not to tell his parents. There was literally no reason for him to fear his parents, but he did as he was worried all the love they had for him would disappear if he wasn't still their little space daughter or whatever they called him.

What ended up happening was one of Nova's "friends" just straight up outing Nova to their parents. I think this "friend" went completely behind their back and told their parents instead of like "accidentally" calling Nova by he/him pronouns. This friend's reasoning was that they were sick of changing pronouns in front of Nova's parents because "obviously" Sarabi and Nuru would have been supportive.

And Nova's parents were supportive, but Nova no longer trusted any of his friends as they all agreed with the one who outed Nova and were telling Nova to stop making this all about him since everything turned out fine in the end. Welp, those people were no longer Nova's friends and he ended up basically alone for the rest of his primary schooling years. Not really opening up until a few college friends wormed their way into his heart.

That is where they found out they were non-binary too. In college. I don't really know how, but I do like the idea that maybe a student started using singular they for Nova. Probably because it's hard to tell the gender of someone with a (now) flat chest and deep voice but wears skirts rarely, all while having an orb for a head with no discernible features.

So yeah, some college classmates probably used they/them for Nova a bit and he really liked that for some reason. I don't think he really found out about the nonbinary label for a few more years, but definitely did think about trying only using they/them pronouns for a very long time.

Whenever they did think they were nonbinary, they went to their parents first before telling anyone else. They thought they would be in for a long talk of either explaining or defending themself as they had no idea how their parents would react to a change to something that wasn't in the binary. To Nova, it was one thing to go from girl to guy or vice versa, but landing in the middle was something entirely different.

Well, it turned out Nuru actually had an old friend who was either nonbinary or had a nonbinary kid. Either way, Nuru was completely on board with Nova being nonbinary, even if he messed up sometimes and didn't completely understand.

Sarabi was also super supportive but had no idea what nonbinary was and asked a lot of questions, which concerned Nova for a bit until he realized she was literally just asking clarifying questions and just being curious. She was probably a little too interested in it as she probably started thinking about identifying as nonbinary too.

I don't think she has yet at all, but she's probably in that space of wondering what it would be like to be nonbinary, or another similar identity. She still identifies as cis and uses she/her pronouns as of now, but Nova and Nuru will sometimes drop in a they/them for Sarabi which makes her really happy though she never asks them to go exclusively they/them ever.

So yeah, that is how Nova found out they were transmasc and then nonbinary! And apparently also how Sarabi figured out they were questioning! :D

The brainrot took over and so here's a vat7k hadestown au!! Don't know if I'll develop it fully but I liked designing it at least!

More info under the cut:

- Varian, the Coronan royal alchemist, tasks himself with deciphering an incantation capable of bringing the world back into tune. Times are tough, and the royal family + Quirin are doing their best to cope with the meagre crop yields and desolate weather (Corona not really being the sunshine kingdom - hasn't been for a while). He wants to help and do good and I think he'd be a good Orpheus.

- Hugo, having moved about from place to place, still has his interest in alchemy and does what he can to get by. He plans on temporarily staying in Corona before looting, but he encounters a certain like-minded scientist at the Snuggly Duckling. I think him being selfish works especially well in Eurydice's role, having a more pessimistic view of the world. It also works with how he gets drawn to Donella's offer of working for her later on, leading him to his death.

- Ulla as Persephone! I was initially stuck on whether to have Rapunzel (and either Eugene/Cass) as her (and Hades) but I was drawn to the connection that Hugo has to Donella and the Donella/Ulla relationship in vat7k just works too well. In this case, Ulla won't be Varian's mother. She's still gonna be somewhat of an inspiration to him though, being the previous Coronan royal alchemist and for her intelligence. For half the year, she'll return to Corona with food, drinks, and alchemical compounds/inventions, bringing Spring and Summer to the world, if only for a bit.

- Donella would be such an interesting Hades, losing sight of her love for Ulla, heart filled with fear and hurt, leading to bitterness and cruelty. Ingvarr being Hadestown and how by being the esteemed Ingvarrian engineer, she'd be in charge of major technological advances across the kingdoms and so would wield a significant amount of power (like how Hades is literally the ruler of the underworld). Ingvarr essentially being a near death sentence for its workers while also displaying its technological prowess, all still shrouded in mystery and corruption - a place so otherworldly compared to the rest of the kingdoms.

I didn't want to modify the outfits too much nor the personalities,, if anything I imagine the general plot beats being the same as the original musical/story but with slight differences that'd you get inherently as a result of these characters. I wouldn't want it to be the case where it's just the show but the names are changed. I'd want this to still make reasonable sense in this AU, with the actions being understandable for this particular cast of characters.

For Hermes, I ended up picking Xavier, as he's most knowledgeable of old legends and stories, which would work in reference to the Hades and Persephone myth (and so Donella and Ulla)! He'd act as a mentor figure for V, someone who can guide him in uncovering the forgotten incantation. Quirin would still be the good supportive dad he is (even if he doesn't fully understand his son's project).

Last but not least, the fates!! often lurking in the background, I'm still a bit stuck on who it could be? I'm tempted to have it be Raps, Cass, and Nuru as they've had celestial connections at some point (and ya know how stars can represent fate), but I also love the freckled siblings dynamic so much. Also Team Radical... Maybe Raps and Cass can be their normal selves but their Sundrop/Moonstone counterparts are the manifested physical forms of the fates? They wouldn't be visible to the characters though, just voices in the wind.

Anyways yeah!! Those are my thoughts. Do let me know if you've got any cool ideas or questions. I'm really combining my interests at full force and there's nothing anyone, not even myself, can do about it quite frankly. 😮‍💨

i havent posted anything on this au in a bit over a month now so take them being all edgy and stuff while i dump more lore on you

What do you think is Hugo's gender identity? Cus I want to hear what you think Hugo's gender is and the story behind it.

EHEHEHE personally i think she’s genderfluid and uses he/she/they pronouns…….I think he was kind of an uncracked egg up until the trials though. like, he’s been in survival mode for so long that he’s never had the time or luxury to really think about himself or his identity….i think he’s had a lot of different disguises over his career though, and those personas are either male or female depending on what the situation calls for so he’s not a stranger to dressing femininely either.

but yeah…i think for a long time hugo just identified as male by default cuz like…what else would he be LOL. if he had any doubts at all they weren’t significantly hindering him or anything so he just buried them with all the other of the emotions he doesn’t want to feel. but like the closet is made of GLASS and this becomes especially obvious when she teams up with 3 other teenagers who are also transgender so sometimes she’ll just Say Shit and they all turn around and look at her like “…….🤨”

i have this very vivid scene in my head where varian comes out to the gang as trans and hes clearly really uneasy abt it. and hugo doesn’t know what to say so he just tries to relate by saying the first thing that comes to mind and goes “oh yeah i get it i mean. sometimes i wish i was a girl but like not all the time yk” and nuru and varian both just stop and stare at him

anyways yeah….other than her traveling party giving her some weird looks nothing actually really came of these conversations bc hugo would refuse to think about herself even if you put a gun to her head

fast forward to post-trials though, and hugo’s been living in the castle with varian for about six months…it was REALLY messy for both of them while she was adjusting, but at this point shes finally started to let her guard down a little, and all of a sudden she has SO much free time and she has no idea what to do with any of it. she’s stealing collecting things, tinkering with all kinds of useless little gadgets, rapunzel is teaching her tons of little arts and crafts projects. overall shes pretty content despite everything. So anyways then the gender crisis hits them like a fucking freight train

honestly i’m like half joking when i say i think it started bc they just kept forgetting to cut their hair. like one day they looked in the mirror and they’re like “wow my hairs getting so long i kinda look like a girl lol. Wait”

AND AS FUNNY AS IT IS ITS SO. WILDLY UNFAMILIAR TO THEM. like all of a sudden theyre SO insecure for as far as they can tell, NO reason and it drives them CRAZY. i dont even think that hugo dislikes their masculine features after coming out, i think they embrace them if anything but its just like…going from 0 to 100 so fast and suddenly being so hyper aware of themselves in a way that they NEVER were before…having to realize that they’re definitely Not cis. it’s fucking TERRIFYING!!!

not to mention it hits him all at once during a time when he’s still frankly really paranoid about him and varian’s relationship, and he’s kinda walking on eggshells bc deep down he’s convinced that var’s just gonna get tired of him eventually and kick him out. its like he’s just waiting for the final nail in the coffin despite the fact that there is literally no coffin.

All that being said i think it takes him a while to work up the courage to talk to varian about it. and he knows he won’t like. hate him for being trans or anything (I sure hope he wouldn’t, at least, seeing as he is literally also trans) but varian’s already done SO much for him and helped him through literally everything already….he doesn’t want to burden him any more than he already has. he also cant comprehend that someone can just Like him, like, as a person, so he’s convinced himself that varian must see something specific in him right now and he’s afraid that if he changes himself drastically in any way then whatever varian saw in him just. won’t be there anymore. If that makes sense

as for who he actually goes to first- honestly i think it’d have to be lance. at least in my head lance was the first person hugo really started to bond with aside from varian….he didn’t start letting his guard down with rapunzel until quite a while after that. also i think he’s worried that if he tells rapunzel she’d end up accidentally spilling something to varian (which is like. Valid bc she’s a horrible liar) he’d definitely write a letter to nuru, too, but nuru is also in another kingdom, and that message takes a while to get to her, so it’s more something they talk about after the fact

when he finally does get a letter back after dumping this revelation on her it’s just like

“dearest hugo. upon reading your letter i desperately wanted to tell you that i told you so, but i realize that would be in poor taste, seeing as you are clearly struggling right now. Moreover,-“ /j

regardless of who she tells first, they obviously all support her and encourage her to talk to varian as well…And ofc varian hypes her up to no end when she finally does. i wanna say it’s a sweet emotional scene but i feel like varian was also under the assumption that she figured out the gender thing like a year ago /j

they eventually just settle on getting her a few new pieces to add to her wardrobe and that works out fine. varian sees his girlfriend in a dress and loses his mind etc etc. All is right in the world

What I think would how the end of it to go like after the trials and everyone is going home and were that are Hugo's home kingdom he has no home and hell just be one the street again and they are dropping Nuru, then Yong, and finally Varian and Hugo and Varian say there good byes to each other than Hugo is off back to his "home" he's like halfway there and then he realizes that he has nothing there and he left Donnella so he won't go back to her, and he realizes that he wants to be with Varian so he goes back to Corona to try and talk to Varian if he could stay with him and when he trying to figure out where to start looking on Corona Varian sees him from and window and starts running to meet him. Everyone else in the castle is confused and run after Varian until he runs up to Hugo and hugs him. This is how I think there conversation would go

"What are you doing here? " V

"I was looking for you. I realized that I had no home to were I was going and I know my heart lies with you so I can to ask if I could stay with you Gogles. " H

"Well I can't make that decision but we could always ask Rapunzel. " V

"I wouldn't see anything wrong with that Varian" R

"So can I stay here? " H

"Yes! " V and R

And then they lived happily ever after.

and all that you could think as you chased after nuru towards the mwezi miji border was "let me be there on time."

and much like the other times you prayed, no god was there to answer.

what greeted the two of you at the outskirts of town was carnage. you had no clue the beastmen of the dens were this violent. maybe that's why it took a bit for the older people of mwezi miji to adjust to your presence.

bodies were strewn across the ground, blood seeping out of their scratch marks and punctures, pooling underneath their eerily still bodies. the sight made your stomach churn. you knew these people. you knew them and if you were to survive this, you would have to bury their bodies.

the gods were cruel. although, you already knew that.

"ma!" nuru cried out as he soared through the air. his yell tore you out of your thoughts, the harsh realization of your current surroundings dawning on you. you were on a battlefield and there was no time to mourn. not yet.

your eyes immediately landed on the twins, their backs pressed against each other as they fought off a crowd of lion beastmen. jabori took it upon himself to guard against the more violent attackers, pushing them away with his spear. jabali, on the other hand, was more straightforward with his method, punching and throwing the aggressors down to the ground. as expected from the twins.

a few of the remaining guards held their ground, albeit struggling with staggering stances and wounds covering their skin. but what tugged at you the most was atiena.

the guardian of the night, her black wings no longer granting her flight due to a spear lodged in the middle of it, stood in the center of the chaos, now donning her bird mask that covered her entire head. she heaved breaths as she stared down her opponent, who seemed to be on the same level as she was.

"guardian!" you cried out alongside nuru, who called out to his mother as opposed to his boss. the two of you raced towards her only to be stopped in your tracks, as if some force were pulling you back.

"stay back!" she demanded. oh gods, she sounded so tired. "we've lost too many people! deal with the rest of them!"

"...yes ma'am!" was all you could say in response. with a heavy feeling in your gut, you and nurru split off towards the side with more casualties.

atiena knew what she had signed up for the day she became the guardian. she knew that the beastmen from the dens were violent people. she knew what they were capable of.

she had experienced it firsthand when she had come searching for refuge with her newborn son.

she remembered fleeing from the dens, her wings barely enough to ensure her escape with her son completely unharmed. if she were being honest, she was surprised they healed after that.

she remembered the joy and relief she felt the moment she found mwezi miji. it was nothing but a small village with no more than a couple dozen people living there, all of them surviving the outlands due to their collective fear of the dens pushing them together.

that was when she dedicated herself to the town. she raised her son alongside the village, watching as it grew and grew into what it was now. and she was there every step of the way, protecting her saviors in the dead of night.

the bird mask that covered her entire head became a reminder of the fact she had a duty to fulfill. it was sewn together crudely with mismatched patches lining the skull and beak.

she loved this town with her entire body and soul. almost as much as she loved her son, her precious nuru. oh, how she wished to apologize to her beloved boy.

she was sorry, that much she was sure of. she was sorry he would no longer have a mother at his side.

the influx of magic burned under her skin. it hurt to conjure small bits of it, let alone the entirety of it. the magic of the night, as she called it, was something she dreaded using. she hoped that she would die without ever having to conjure it.

and yet, here she was. she knew it was the only way to save the rest of the guard. to save her children.

she stared the beastman down. she had to take him down with her. even if the rest of the dens remained, she knew the overwhelming loyalty they felt for their pack overweighed all else.

and so, with apologies the only thing on her mind, she allowed her magic to overflow.

"ma's really powerful, d'you know that?" nuru grinned, a little giggle following after his words. "she's got this really cool magic trick she tells me about!"

"yeah? well, i bet you my big brother has cooler magic," you snickered your tail swishing behind you.

"no way! ma's totally cooler than your stupid brother!" nuru stuck out his tongue when you punched his arm. "she always tells me that she'll never use it, though..."

"why?"

"because... she said..."

"no..." nuru was glad he was still in the air. he was able to see what his mother was doing. "no, no, no, no!"

"nuru!" you shouted his name once one of the beastmen fell to the ground. "what's going on?!"

"mom!" he didn't answer you. directly, at least. he was quick to ignore the beastmen scrambling underneath him, opting to turn all of his attention to where atiena was.

and what greeted you when you looked over to where he was headed made you feel as if you were watching your father become bedridden.

atiena had engulfed herself and the beastman in black as dark as the night. it was as if she had grabbed the night sky itself, stripped it of the stars and moon and clouds, and draped it over the two of them like a blanket.

it terrified you how one minute, she seemed to disappear. but the next, all that remained was her.

she lay on the ground, her wings stripped of their feathers, leaving behind black bone and the weapon that was lodged in them before. her mask was still on her head, but the top layer was ripped off as if a beastman had torn at the top of it.

what scared you the most was the blood. it was pitch black but it flowed just like blood. it smelled like it, too.

it was as if the entire battlefield was set on pause. no one moved or made a sound. no one until--

"mom!" nuru's cries were harsher than they were before. his voice scratched against his throat, the guttural scream that accompanied his cry tearing at your heart, just enough for you to drop your weapon and race after him. you knew the twins weren't far behind either.

"mom... mama..." he whimpered once he reached her body, ripping the mask off her face and pulling her head to lay on his lap. "mama, wake up... please, please, please wake up."

"she said it would be the last magic she would ever use."

"you used it... you used it, mama, why?" his shoulders shook as he cried, grasping at her fur jacket as if he were a child exploring the world again. "you told me you'd never use it, mama... why'd you lie?"

she never answered him.

Chat how we feel about the idea of vat7k taking place in season 2 of tts? Since varian was gone for the most of the season and everything, AND AND I LOVE the idea of the radical team being there when Cassandra attacked.

Like think about it, before nothing left to lose Hugo would follow varian to the moonstone tower thing and witness the whole sequence happen and when varian gets trapped in the blackrocks cage Hugo was near him enough to get trapped in there WITH him so when eugene comes up the tower to save them, he just sees this blonde twink varian mentioned a few weeks ago. AND AS EUGENE WENT UP TO SAVE VARIAN Nuru and Yong FOLLOWED THEM TO HELP HUGH AND VAR cuz yk they wanna help. (And Eugene’d be like oh hell naw y’all are children you think raps is gonna NOT GIVE HIM A SCOLDING IF HE GETS THE KIDS INVOLVED?? and also we’d get this awesome scene where they all try to fight cass and fail miserably like a champ)

AND I LIKE AFTER THAT WHEN ITS HAPPILY EVER AFTER Hugo’d help varian design and build the hot water generator in corona, and they officially gain the title of the royal engineers of corona. AND AND they’d work part time at the library too just because

Yong I imagined would either stay in corona or go back to the fire kingdom, but since we don’t know much about him, we don’t know if he has anyone or anything to go back to, SO I PROPOSE A HEADCANON!!! YONG GETS ADOPTED BY XAVIER!!!! And he’d help out at the local bakery of corona, or he would host firework shows during big events, the guy can do anything

Nuru would go back to Amber and convince her and or her family too, to come live in the air kingdom!! As they have a lot of potential of helping with the asteroids, and probably closer to corona so they could all visit varian, Hugo, and Yong it’s a win win!! Nuru would finally make her mother proud (mommy issues Blehh) and she’d have the next queen introduced to her mother.

As for donella and cyrus they are the main keepers of the library, since Hugo and varian are pretty busy in corona they’d offer to go there and just keep it safe. Since yk the yearning lesbian saw her decade year old soul of her crush PERISH IN FRONT OF HER IN THE LIBRARY…she’d want something to remind her of ulla. And cyrus, I headcanon him as dons bio son so he’d just stay there with his mama taking care of her, and ALSO I think cyrus would be the tough guy with a soft personality so he’d maybe adopt some cats and read various books in the library and he’d also do gardening in his past time. (Male wife material ik) Hugo and varian would also visit them a lot.

Why Varian is Attracted to Hugo in Vat7K "canon" - A Varigo Essay

To start this off, Varian is canonly a fan of the "Bad Boy". It's true! When he first meets Eugene, he shows off a stalker-wall with some Flynn Rider books but also a lot of "merchandise" made up of Flynn Rider's/Eugene's personal effects. He may have started out admiring the guy in the book, but there's no way that he assumed that the dashing rogue of 20-something years is the same guy as the traveling noble in the book that has been around since before Eugene was born.

As Eugene, rather romantically, describes the fictional Flynn Rider, he was a man who had enough money he could do anything he wanted, and what he wanted was to go out and find treasure and have a bunch of women fawning over him instead of, say, funding an orphanage. (Personally, I don't know why either of them idolized the guy, but that's getting off-topic.)

Varian, a young noble boy who was fascinated by the book, then finds out there's a "real" Flynn Rider running around and decides to learn about him and realizes he's not the same but is instead a thief and a scoundrel and he LOVES it. He collects things about him, trades coin and alchemy for things that would be impossible to get on his own (like a whole clump of hair with a ribbon attached?!) and becomes obsessed with his activities, desiring to meet him.

And then he does, but by the time he meets him Flynn Rider has given up his whole persona and lifestyle and isn't the same person he grew infatuated with. But, he still tries to impress him, to grow close to him, but over time he gradually loses interest in him as "Flynn Rider" and instead just sees him as "Eugene", who he still wants to impress and be close to but not in the same way.

And then he meets Hugo. He goes out on a life-changing journey to find out what happened to his mother and while at the Fire Trial he meets a wild-card, a fresh, new Bad Boy that just so happened to steal from him but the way that he did it has Varian feeling gobsmacked, impressed, and even though he tries to deny it he wants to see the guy again.

The guy took the Totem, so he figures he may as well just give up, but then the guy comes back and returns the Totem, telling him that he wants to go to the Eternal Library as well for some unknown reason. And Varian tries to deny it, but he's happy he came back for more than the fact that he got the Totem back. He acts disinterested, aloof, but he still humors his flirting and teasing. He decides to see where this goes. Hugo is like Flynn Rider except he's a Flynn Rider that actually relates to and understands Varian and won't reject him if he sees something about to blow up.

The two of them start making a little game of things. They make little jabs knowing the other will hear, Varian casually lets him learn the recipe for the truth serum "by accident", tells Yong a secret that he knew Hugo would never resist in using the serum to learn (poor Yong, though, they shouldn't have involved him because that stuff HURTS), he loves the thrill of the fight, the way Hugo smirks when he thinks he's got one over on Varian, and they toss insults back and forth that start out clearly hostile but gradually turn into something less so and even Nuru and Yong are questioning if they're fighting or flirting at this point.

Then they get to the Eternal Library and Varian finds out that his "bad boy" was actually a "bad guy" and is working for the woman that took his mother from him all those years ago and it shatters him. He pulls away from him, regrets everything he did to encourage him and his little crimes and all the teasing. Their "fighting" is now actual fighting, and he's heartbroken.

But then Hugo gives up his old life for him, saves him from Varian's crazy mother that turned out to actually be the bad guy in all this and who he thought was the bad guy was actually a good person trying to protect him and things patch up and Varian feels brave enough to finally admit his feelings, after Hugo declared his own earlier, and they go back to Corona and the little jabs return. Hugo is no longer a criminal, but he's still the "bad boy", causing little troubles here and there and, best of all, he's not beholden to the King like Eugene was when he was young. He finally has the Bad Boy of his Dreams and crimes or not, he's still finding ways to keep Varian guessing. And he loves it.

–Hugo knows how to swordfight, but he rarely uses it because it is much more convenient for him to fight with alchemy, but due to the fact that Yong wanted to learn how to fight with swords, Hugo had to go back to it again to teach him (omg, Hugo as an older brother figure, omg)

–I like to think that somehow, Olivia actually has a personality and often when Hugo forgets to do something for her, and then asks for something himself, Olivia can just turn her back on him and sit like, "no no no, you blonde piece of shi-, I'm not doing anything for you", because she's a baddie and because I said so/j

-ALSO, Olivia really loves attention and this was the reason for her (kinda)friendship with Varian, because he would definitely be amazed with how she works, and Olivia likes when she shocks people (we all know what blonde mf didn't like their friendship)

–Yong also became sassy during their journey, and while Hugo is very proud of it, Nuru and Varian are afraid because they think they've ruined the child

–Hugo and Nuru read Flynn Ryder books because of Yong and Varian, but while Nuru read openly and everyone knew about it, Hugo hid it as best he could, he was too ashamed to admit that he was doing something for the others, but one day he accidentally let it slip and that was the end of his life (in fact, Yong and Varian just were glad that he liked their favorite books, but Hugo was very ashamed)

–Hugo did his piercing himself when he was 14 during a mental breakdown, the same with his hair, but in the end he liked the new style so much that he left it

–Hugo's REAL smile is a stupid, dorky wide smile with teeth, but because of how stupid, in his opinion, his smile looks, he began to hide his real smile and replaced it with his typical sly grin, and now when he is very happy/very excited, he bites his lip just for the sake of not showing his real smile

On an unrelated note, in modern days, Hugo would LOVE Olivia Rodrigo, I just know it

Conversion Corner: Starbound Aliens part 1

Florans

And now it’s time this week to do something I’ve meant to do for a while, but wasn’t sure how to implement: Conversions of the various playable species from Starbound!

I still remember when Starbound was first coming out as a sci-fi take on the 2D sidescrolling block-based survival game, similar to Terraria, and it has certainly evolved from there, with plenty of alien species to play as.

However, the trick comes from the fact that the alien species in Starbound only provide cosmetic effects, determining what your character and their items look like, as well as how they describe objects in the world. Not exactly a lot to work with for traits based on biology and not culture, but there is plenty of lore which helps us fill in the blanks, so that’s what we’ll be using to flesh them out.

And with that, I present the Florans.

As the name suggests, florans are a species of plant people, but I would suggest disavowing yourself of any notions of peaceful nature lovers, for the florans are predatory carnivores much earlier in their civilization’s development, tending to wear simple clothing made from local materials and wield simple weapons as a baseline. What’s more, they have trouble recognizing that other sapient species as anything other than particularly talkative meat, making them dangerous to deal with.

All of this would seem to paint them as a malicious, dangerous species that has not business being part of the galactic community, if not for the Greenfingers.

Greenfingers are a rare variant of floran that are calmer and more cerebral than their kin, more curious and eager to learn. What’s more, they also have an innate ability to manipulate plant matter, not just reshaping it, but actually coaxing plant matter to form symbiotic relationships with the technology of other species, filling in missing gaps and making it more intuitive for other florans to use.

As such, Greenfingers are the de facto leaders of floran-kind, and typically actively work to educate and enlighten their kin to better interact with other species in a peaceful context and improve their own technological innovation. The fact that there is only ever one Greenfingers in a tribe at a time might suggest perhaps some sort of hormonal trigger during development, perhaps a genetic manipulation by the Ancients to give the florans a way to uplift themselves? That’s my theory.

In any case, the very existence of the Greenfingers and individuals like the heroic hunter Nuru implies that this tribalism and speciesism is a product of their current culture, rather than anything inherent to them, and the Florans we see now in-game are likely on that transitionary period just before enlightenment where they will one day truly join their peers on the galactic stage.

Florans are humanoid in appearance, though made of green photosynthetic plant flesh, with wide, cheekless mouths like a snake and flower-like structures on their heads. Though they are a single-sex species, they do seem to possess a sense of gender identity, their bodies subtly altering to reflect that over time.

The typical floran is brash, impulsive, and quick to act, having little patience to think things through. On the other hand, they derive simple, childlike joy from their interests and methods of expression. Their Greenfinger kin are more patient by comparison, and demonstrate surprising compassion even as they use their wits to outmaneuver those bold enough to try and supplant them. In a way, the Greenfingers are almost like their tribes “parent”, trying to teach and nurture the best aspects of their people even as they fight against centuries of traditionalism.

With that in mind, floran society is basically nonexistent on a macro scale, with each individual tribe essentially governing themselves with their Greenfinger’s guidance. This does, however, mean that there is a lot of variety in how florans interact with other species. More isolated tribes may attack on sight, while those with a lot of contact with other species may have come to realize that the funny talking prey is actually fully sapient and worthy of their respect.

Floran

Ability Modifiers: +2 Str, +2 Dex, -2 Wis

HP: 4

Size and Type: Medium plants

Floran Tech Familiarity: Florans have an intuitive understanding of technology that incorporates biotech elements. They gain a +2 to Computers, Engineering, and Life Science rolls when used to interact with biotech. This includes biotech computers, biomechanical ships and other technology, technology augmented and repaired by a Greenfinger, and other options as GM discretion.

Limited Plant Benefits: Despite being plant creatures, florans don’t gain the standard immunities associated with creatures of the plant type. Instead, they gain a +2 racial bonus on saving throws against mind-affecting effects, paralysis, poison, polymorph, sleep, and stunning effects, unless the effect specifies that it is effective against plants.

Photosynthesis: Florans are capable of photosynthesis, though it is somewhat limited and doesn’t provide the nutrients they gain from their carnivorous lifestyle. They can survive three days on sunlight or UV light before having to roll Constitution checks for starvation.

Scavenger: Florans gain a +2 to Perception and Survival

Weapon Familiarity: Florans are always proficient with weapons with the analog special quality. Additionally, they can utilize the thought special quality of a weapon if it also has the living quality as if they had telepathy.

What are your thoughts on Varian’s extended family in Seven Kingdoms?

So like, I really could not care less about Vat7k to be honest.

I don’t have anything against it. I think it’s a great au, very well thought out, has a wonderful storyline and great characters; and I love that the fandom took a failed spinoff and created a community around it. It’s a great au, it just not my thing. I do like Varigo, but that’s about it. (Disclaimer because I’m tired and don’t want to come off as hateful; and the varigo fandom scares me sometimes /hj)

So all I really know about Varian’s extended family in that au is Amber and that she’s a farmer (I think) who gets with Nuru. That’s literally all I know about that. I have picked up, however, that they are generally very supportive of Varian and I think they “make Varian question the real meaning of family” or something like that…which I don’t really understand what that means? Does that mean that he learns what a family is and it’s them, does that mean they suck and he learns that sometimes a family is just you, your father, and a raccoon, and not some giant unit? Does that mean that he learns family isn’t just blood and it’s your closest friends? Idk that but is just from what I read off of the pitch and it’s always bugged me because what does that mean??

Now if I had to choose I would make Varian’s extended family the Addams family but I don’t think that would work out timeline-wise (but wouldn’t that make an amazing crossover? I’ve already got ideas for it.)

Time to time, watching the lots of crossovers fans do about Varian with anything, I thought about one of the fandom I liked and spend lots of years in it

I tried to find who in the Hetalia cast would be fitting for a role swap with the Vat7k characters, but they are so different from each other , even the similar things between them have to be pushed xD

Long time ago, my favorite fanfics and fancomics were "Historical accurrate" focused, but most the content was about romance , so I endup becoming a big fan of:

USUK : United States x United Kingdom

Usually along with "FACE family" Dynamic, France and England as parents , Canada and America as adoptive sons

Then , I got a more deep liking for England , so I would get any England x (any other country) material

As well for USA x (any other country)

Varian: From a germanic country, so we have some to pick between the very Germany, or Prussia, Austria, Switzerland, Lietchestein, Bravaria or Kugel Mugel, but most of them have a serious stoic attitude

Except Prussia, who likes to play funny, is clean and disciplinated , writing a lot for his journal so everyone can know about his amazing adventures and goals, high self esteem, able to play teacher/mother/father/older brother role to any who wants to take lessons from him or who needs him, during the manga pages (and anime chapters) about Industrial revolution, he and his lil bro showed great engineering skills and enthusiasm.

Hey, when we think about Rapunzel, we were taught about her Germanic origins, then on the Tangled making, there was a mention about how the team wanted Germany as main influence and a few of Spain influence , and maybe not lots of you saw it, but there was a fanart about Prussia and Hungary cosplaying Eugene and Rapunzel that got re-posted on most old Facebook accounts about Hetalia

So feels like Prussia role was already taken at the Tangled cast, as well, Hungary on her cannon scenes, used a frying pan as weapon too.

Next pick for a fitting role for Varian, it may be , America? I don't know xD , joyful, friendly, strong, innovative, but doesn't knows how to measure his skills or social contact so he endups pushing everyone boundaries or ignoring safety codes, loves heroic tales and wants to be the hero of the situation at sigh, too bad he makes exaggerated bad takes due to his inexperience.

England, either for Hugo or Varian

A tsundere who suffered social exclusion during his early existence, who fought all the way to stop being poor, forgotten and put aside to reach riches, glory and power, not losing contact with his magical paranormal friends, yet, having difficult times to accept friendship or love from others, facing betrayings as well, a little bit of low self esteem, trying to compensate with other things (as with aggression and search for more power), for innovation, he tried engineering but his ideas were too eccentric so he would end up laughed at for his impractical machines, yet, searching ways to improve.

I need to make this shorter so I'll skip talking about France

As well about China or any other asian country for Yong

Sadly for Nuru , there are very few African or Oceanic based characters, most of them on a sole official videogame of the series with not enough screen time on the show, yet, nice to search around the fanbase

Any way, find something for an "accurrate " role swap is difficult, maybe cosplaying would be the only thing I would fantasy about xDdDDDDdD

The only "legit" version for a Crossover of Hetalia and Tangled would be creating brand new OCs of each one of the locations in the map of this world, specially about the 7 kingdoms

Bayangor looks kin to any country from Southeast Asia , so I would pick Indonesia (the series got a femenine character sketch, but then, changed it for a male one, either way, just for the manga and not the anime)

Galcrest and Nesdernia would certainly be about native american communities, sadly, most of them are drawn as OCs for the fandom, no actual cannon characters

Pittsford and Corona looks germanic enough, hehe, we could pick similarities with other European countries

The Dark Kingdom gave hints about Scotland , so it's easier

Ingvarr, according to some post, was supposed to be Persian/ Arabic influence, as well for Koto, African influence, but is vague, and both of them, reversing the role of colonization, looking like ... O dear, I have to go.

I have circus au brainrot but I don't want to draw so here I am making quick notes instead.

Rapunzel.

You would think aerial dancing is made for her, but no. She is the make-up artist, the costume maker, she even makes props and decors when its needed. Basically everything crafty, she'll happily do it. And she loves it because she gets to assist all of her friends and let her creativity go everywhere. I think she used to be an aerial dancer but the spotlight is not where she wants to be, she got to leave her old circus to make a new one with Eugene and her friends and she is much more happy now.

Eugene.

He is the ringmaster! He's eloquent and captivates the audience with ease. Plus he is quick to think and knows how to deal with unforseen events when needed. He also knows plenty of fun tricks he likes to show off when performers are building their set ups.

Lance.

He is an animal trainer. I just think he'd be neat as one- he is never alone on stage and put everyone (human and animal alike) at ease. He also knows how to make an entertaining scenes featuring all of the pets. He sometimes assists other performers with one of his animal companion.

Cassandra.

I genuinely think she could do anything- but I really want her to be an aerial artist too, except she specialises in trapeze! And maybe she even did duos with Rapunzel at some point. She genuinely changed trapeze partners so much (Rapunzel, Andrew, Zhan Tiri, etc..) now she is much more at ease being solo.

Varian.

He's an illusionist, sometimes called magician but he's more about illusions. He loves making up new tricks and building his own props. His whole act has steampunk vibes and he has a mad scientist persona. Sometimes Ruddiger gets to be his assistant.

Yong.

He's a juggler who specialises in pyrotechnics. His work is very impressive despite his young age and his friends always need to remind him to not overdo it. He enjoys using his own mistakes in his acts, and will fake small accidents to shock the audience.

Hugo.

He's a contortionist, escape artist, and many other things. He is a man of many talent and he could probably do a whole show just by himself or so he says. He sometimes assist Varian in his act since he's the only one who can hide Anywhere. His act is also very steampunk and his persona is some sort of mechanical puppet.

Nuru.

She's an aerial dancer who mainly use silk. She was a huge Rapunzel fan and picked up the art because of her, so when she got the chance to join the troup she took it! Rapunzel gives her pointers and advices on her performance from time to time. Nuru's act is space themed.

Chapter 5

Decisions

Hugo was silent as they moved through the long tunnel. Their torch crackling and the dirt under their feet were the only sounds in there.

What happened to Donella? She wasn’t one to go down without a fight. Did they overtake her? Why didn’t she even look at him? It was like he was invisible. That hurt a lot.

“Four eyes?” Varian asked.

Hugo looked over.

“You okay?”

Hugo forced a smile on his face. “Oh yeah…yeah im fine.”

“Are you still mad at me for tricking you?” Varian asked.

“What? No. I…its been a long night. Lets just find a place to sleep.”

Varian still looked nervous. There was something he was thinking that Hugo wanted to understand. He usually liked the way Varians mind worked. But not when he looked so scared and nervous. Not when he was afraid and being chased.

“Varian I…” Hugo began. But where to begin? With the fact that he was a witch? The fact that Donella was his mom? The fact that he was the one who saved him with an explosion that he couldn’t repeat if he tried? No. No Varian would hate him. Varian hated witches. He made that quite clear.

The feeling of magic sparking and burning already badly hurt skin on his thighs only confirmed the thoughts.

That was until Varian came over and grabbed his hand out of his pocket. “What’s wrong, Hugo?” He said it so gently. It made Hugo’s stomach churn. “whatever it is, we can handle it. Together.”

He looked over and saw Nuru leaning against the wall, fully immersed in her book, trying to give them some semblance of privacy.

“I…” Hugos magic calmed in Varians hand. Just holding the other boys hand made him calm. Made his magic calm. He couldn’t do this. He wouldn’t put Varian in danger. He was dangerous. His magic was dangerous. A deep sense of panic gripped his chest.

“I cant.” He pulled his hand out of Varians.

“Can’t what?”

“I…im not who you think I am.”

“Hugo I don’t understand.”

“you’ll be safer with Nuru…not around me.”

“Hugo…” Varians voice was so gentle, so kind. “You can tell me anything.”

“I can’t.” hugos voice betrayed him. The deep sense of panic in his throat, in his chest. In his hands. The magic pooled into them and made them red hot.

Nuru stood, putting a hand on Varians shoulder. “Lets just give him a minute, okay? He’ll catch up with us.”

Varian sighed. “Don’t keep me waiting too long…please.”

Hugo just nodded as Nuru led him off down the cave. Farther and farther down until he couldn’t see the light of the torch.

Then he heard it.

Footsteps he’d learned to listen for since he was a kid. Heavy and intentional. Cyrus.

Hugo’s panic was only getting worse and Cyrus-why did it have to be fucking Cyrus-was coming. He was probably just like Donella. Under some kind of strange spell. He couldn’t even move his feet with how the panic gripped him.

He was right. Cyrus, big and intentional and burly in his armor walked towards him with a small light. Magic. Cyrus didn’t use magic.

“Boy.” It was the many voices again. Like what he heard the first night those goop monsters attacked. Only this time they were coming out of Cyrus’s mouth.

“Where is he?”

Hugo took a deep breath. “Why would I tell you that?”

“He stole what is mine.”

Hugo shook his head. “…You’re the protector of that place. Right?”

“Correct…If you brought him to me I could put something in it for you. Your magic. It is…explosive.”

“How did you-“

“I know all magic’s. I know how to take it away. Bring the boy and you will be rewarded.”

The worst part was, Hugo wanted to accept the deal. He wanted this magic gone. He wanted to be normal.

“I will be waiting at the river docks until tomorrows dawn. Should you decide to take my deal. If you do not however…I will hunt you and the boy to the ends of the earth.”

There was a long moment while him and the thing possessing Cyrus’s body stared at each other.

The words tumbled out of Hugos mouth. “Can you really…just take it away?”

“only if you comply.”

“And…and what will happen to Varian? Once it’s gone?”

“Nothing permanent…you have until dawn tomorrow.”

Cyrus turned. God Hugo wished he could go and hug Cyrus. Just like he used to when he was a kid, and Cyrus would hold him tight in his arms and make everything feel alright again.

Instead, Hugo collapsed to his knees, the surge of magic that released was bright. Too bright. He shielded his eyes.

When he opened them, in front of him was a small translucent mouse. It lit up the room with how bright it was.

“What…” The mouse crawled up into his hands. Hugo sniffled, hugging it close. “What should I do? I just…I want this to be over…I want…I want to go home.”

The little mouse blinked at him. He wanted to go home to his sleeping bag and the shared tent.

He also wanted to go home to Varian. Stupid Varian with his goggles and laugh and more kindness in a single sentence than he’d ever experienced in his life. Stupid Varian with such a smart brain that he thought of getting a sample. Who would think of that?

Stupid, stupid Hugo for thinking he ever had a goddamn chance. Not with someone as good as him. Not when he has so much magic his own father tried to kill him over it.

Hugo sobbed. The little mouse couldn’t say anything but it was comforting not to be alone in this place.

After a moment, he calmed himself and looked at the little mouse.

“You need a name, don’t you?”

It squeaked in response. Hugo thought for a second.

“how about…Oliva?”

Oliva seemed to like that name as she squeaked happily and climbed into Hugo’s coat pocket.

“So Oliva, what do we do?”

Varian had been quiet since they left Hugo in the cave. Nuru didn’t like it.

“…You know he just needs a couple minutes…he’ll be right back.”

Varian looked at her. “…What do you know about him?”

“…What do you mean?”

“Back at the tavern…you two were acting like you’d met before…you know something about him? Don’t you?”

Nuru looked to the side before answering. “Its not my place to tell.”

Varian rubbed his face. “What is your place? …who are you, Nuru?”

Nuru rubbed her arm. “As I told you, I’m a wizard from Estelle.”

“And why are you here? Helping us?”

“I cant tell you most things but I can tell you it’s the last mission before I become queen.”

“Queen? You’re a…”

“Yeah. Im royalty.” Nuru didn’t look extremely happy about that. “We should keep going.”

“no we’re not leaving it at that. That answers nothing about what I asked. Just…I need someone to tell me the truth here. Hugo…Hugo is being weird. I want to help him but I don’t know how.”

“Maybe you should start with channeling that magic.” Nuru said. “You didn’t see it. I doubt Hugo saw it…but I did.”

“What do you mean?”

“In the tavern. The way you thought. The way your kind works. It reeks of the eternal library. You’re the youngest alchemist to work for a royal family and your formulas are used all around the seven kingdoms. Varian I think that comes from your magic.”

“My magic is…my brain?” Varian questioned.

“That’s my running theory. Its very hard to prove though considering it’s not an obvious one…but, Varian you could be the most amazing wizard of this age if you put that mind to work in Estelle.”

“Nuru…”

“Just think about it, Varian. It makes sense.”

Varian shook his head. “I earned everything I know. And you think I was just given it cause of my mom?”

“That’s not what I was saying.”

“Sounded like it!” Varian took a deep breath. “…Lets keep going.”

Nuru sighed and the two walked in silence for a couple more minutes before they heard footsteps.

“Guys!” Hugos voice called out. Varian immediately brightened. As soon as he saw Hugo he ran to him, tackling him in a tight hug.

“Hey goggles. You miss me?”

Varian blushed, pulling away. “pfft no!”

“Boys let’s keep moving. I don’t know about you but I don’t want to be stuck in this cave all night.” Nuru said.

Hugo moved to walk ahead when Varian took his hand. Hugo blushed a little.

“Don’t go away again…okay?” Varian asked quietly.

“Are you okay?”

Varian’s eyes flickered to the ground as they walked, then at Hugo. “…you’ve been my only constant the last couple days…I want to keep it that way, if that’s alright?”

Hugo softened and nodded, squeezing Varian’s hand. Oliva poked her head out of his pocket. Varian brightened at the little mouse.

“Oh my god where did you find her?” He asked as he offered a hand. Oliva climbed up onto it. Hugo quickly noticed the mouse wasn’t translucent anymore. Now she looked like a real mouse, not one born out of magic. “She’s so cute!”

“I named her Oliva.” Hugo said with a smile.

“That’s so cute.”

Nuru giggled softly. “You boys are adorable together…I think I see an exit.” She pointed up ahead. There was a latter, the top being a trap door.

Nuru climbed first with the torch. Then Varian, then Hugo. They were in an abandoned mill in a cave.

“Okay…not the best place to be.” Varian muttered. “We should try to get back to town.”

The conversation with Cyrus…not Cyrus. The protector in Cyrus’s body was gnawing at Hugo. But the feeling of Varian’s hand in his made it a little easier to deal with. It helped that he no longer felt like he was going to explode at any moment.

The three walked in quiet.

Varian noticed that Hugos mind was working overtime again. He had hoped the little bit of space given would keep this from happening again. He hated seeing Hugo so quiet. It wasn’t like him. but last time he asked about it Hugo freaked out. maybe he was still mad about him tricking him…or worse.

“Hugo?”

“Yeah?”

“Is now a good time to talk about earlier? In the cave?”

Hugo didn’t say anything for a moment, then nodded. “Whats up?”

“…Do you get those a lot? The panic attacks?”

“I…yeah.” Hugo had never heard it described that way. Thinking back, most of the time when his magic was going haywire it was because he was panicking.

“I get them too…”

Hugo had never known about that. He looked at Varian confused.

“Not that I’ve had time for it these days.” Varian sighed. “I mostly just work through them until they go away…how long have you been dealing with them?”

Hugo thought about it for a second. “All my life, basically…”

Varian nodded, not pushing the conversation further. Hugo counted himself lucky. The three slipped into silence again as they made their way into the deep woods.

“We’re pretty far away from town.” Nuru said. “We should make camp.”

“Cant you just teleport us?” Hugo asked.

She rolled her eyes. “No. im not that powerful.”

Hugo had a snarky remark but saying it would give away his magical imposition to Varian. He huffed and crossed his arms.

“Okay. I can make a campfire.” Varian said.

Finally, Hugo would get to sleep under the stars.

I posted this one publicly anyways so I'm not going anon lol but I HATE how ppl make Nuru mother around Varian and Hugo. She's 16. They're 18 and 19 respectively. Yes, she can be a mom friend - but shes still younger than them and a kid. She's not responsible for them or their actions.

I honestly more so think ppl should show Varian and Hugo playing a guardian role for both Nuru and Yong more - they're the adults of the group. Nurus and Yongs parents (esp Yongs bc hes 12) entrusted them with their kids safety and well being. If anything they should be the ones taking charge and making sure the two minors don't get themselves in serious trouble.

Please I beg I need content of Varigo desperately attempting to "parent" and having no clue what they're doing lmao

People need to stop making Nuru what the atla fandom thought Katara was. Idk what it is about people assigning the "girlie girl" of the group the mom friend title like Nuru doesn't even have any canon characteristics beyond like two thing and people still find somehow to fit her into a fake gender norm bc heaven forbid a found family not be nuclear.

I agree that varigo should be taken on a more parental role (I would argue mentor/babysitter role tho) bc its way more realistic and ALSO FUNNIER. WHERE ARE MY MOM HUGO FICS. @hopegained — alright, set aside the fact that em has a well-written oc, period, em has managed to make eron fit in perfectly with the skywalker family. that isn't easy to do. i read some headcanon or read some thread and i go, oh, wow, i see some of luke or i see some of his mom or i see x. if i didn't know anything about the sequels, but a LOT about legends/before sequels sw, i'd think eron was canon. besides that, eron is just a well developed oc with well chosen motivations and faults, who leads and reacts to the story in very realistic ways. 10/10 would follow again. in fact, i need to on this blog. xD
