You watched the video again. He was laughing, while she was draped on his arm, smiling up at him. It was just a short clip, but he looked so happy with her. You didn’t even know who she was, but some stays online were wondering if she was in someway important to him romantically. No one knew about you. No one knew that he had a secret relationship and that’s the way you both wanted it. You didn’t think you could handle the backlash of being with him. Stays would never approve of you. The internet would tear you apart. They would never think you were good enough for him, and you had to agree. You pressed play on the video one more time, tears filling your eyes. You tossed your phone to the farthest corner of the bed, you needed it away from you, needed them away from you. You put your head in your hands and cried softly. You weren’t sure how long you stayed like that before you heard the door unlock.

"Baby, im home." Felix called from the entryway.

You could hear him hang his keys on the hook and take his shoes off. He went to the living room first, looking for you. When you weren’t there, you heard him head down the hall toward the bedroom. He softly opened the door.

"There you are angel." He said, smiling.

You looked up at him and your heart broke at his beauty. Of course you weren’t good enough for him, just look at him. He took in your puffy face, and tear stained cheeks before saying "love, what’s wrong?"

“don’t call me that.” you mumbled into your pillow.

“don’t call you what? love?” you nodded. “but that’s what you are. you’re my love. my everything. my only reason for everything that i do. you’re my life.”

you wiped at your tears, turning to face him. you looked up at his concerned face. seeing him through your bloodshot, watery eyes- he was a little blurry around the edges.

“would you rather me call you oxygen?” he asked. “you’re my reason for breathing. but it doesn’t have the same ring to it.”

he wiped some stray tears from your cheeks with his thumbs. “would you rather me call you pookie?” he chuckled a little. your lips turned up slightly at the corners. “my wittle pookie wookie bear.” he said in his most obnoxious baby voice, pinching your cheeks. you laughed at that.

“you’re crazy.” you said, voice still weak and watery.

he leaned in and placed a kiss on your forehead. “only crazy for you,” he said against your skin before leaning back and adding “pookie.”

you rolled your eyes at him, sniffling. he rolled over to his bedside table and grabbed a tissue. handing it to you he asks, “you want to tell me what’s wrong?”

“i saw a video online of you with a girl..” you told him. “you both looked so happy. and all the stays think that she’s your secret girlfriend or something and it got to me..”

“but angel, you’re my secret girlfriend.” he chuckled, brushing some hair out of your face and behind your ear. “and i promise you, you’re the only secret girlfriend or real girlfriend or imaginary girlfriend that i have. you’re it.”

“but i don’t deserve that.. im not good enough to be your girlfriend.” you admit.

“says who?”

you shrug. “all of the internet would say that if they knew about us.”

“the internet knows nothing about you. even if they knew we were dating, they don’t know the real you. they don’t even know the real me.” he tilts your chin up to look at him. his eyes are so beautiful, but a little glassy, he had gotten a little emotional while you were crying. “the only opinion that should matter to you is mine. and i love you with all of my heart. all of my soul. my entire being is just love for you. you are more than enough for me. too good for me in fact. how did i ever get so lucky?”

“really?” you ask, fresh tears brimming your waterline, but for an entirely different reason.

Guys, most of my family except my parents is Greek Orthodox. I thought of myself as pure blooded (though jokingly, not in a “this makes me superior” way) until my aunt discovered through DNA testing she’s 75% Italian.

Greek is right there in the name. I KNOW what an ethnoreligion is.

It’s true I was personally not RAISED Greek Orthodox. But why wasn’t I?

Not because my mom was white. Because my mom was a feminist, and deeply offended by patriarchal religious traditions. And also was deeply offended by the idea that Greeks should have our own enclaves, when as she understood Christianity “it’s about Gods grace for all people.” She left the Orthodox Church in disgust. I was raised Methodist instead.

So I wasn’t raised in an ethnoreligion. But I’ve BEEN to St. Katherine’s many times, and my keepsake from my deceased grandma IS an icon OF ST KATHERINE because that’s the church that gave it to her in thanks for pious community service.

Im not leery of homeland rhetoric because I do what other whites tell me to do without thinking of ethnicities. I’m leery of homeland rhetoric because I very literally was raised by someone who rejected it and was very frank with me about why.

So when someone says I don’t understand ethnic identity I hear my older relatives who loudly lament people “not understanding that the traditions are beautiful, not stuffy” and nudging in unsubtle ways and not understanding why I… went back to… being… a Methodist.

I think of the food I eat, the holidays I celebrate, the anger I still carry that no one taught me Greek. The yearning to visit… and the fear I won’t belong.

Does that mean I find ethnic pride unpalatable because of white culture? I mean maybe, white culture has a way of slithering into people’s brains and sticking there.

But like… I remember reading Plato’s Apology for the first time in college, and just spending the evening sobbing because Socrates not only thought like me and talked like me and got pilloried for asking the Wrong Questions like me but was one of my people.

That has never stopped being one of my Important Memories and it never will.

So I think I’m maybe not as oblivious as people want to think. I’m leery of “these are Our Traditions and thus they are holy and beyond reproach” because I was raised by someone who was also leery of it, and taught me to be, and explained it in ways I still find deeply convincing.

Please don’t boil all the complexity off and say “it’s because they’re white” or “Methodism is Christian and Christianity presents itself as universal so it can stick its nose in everywhere and therefore so do they.”

On prayers in hellenism

(feel free to correct me if i made a mistake)

Literally yesterday I was talking to one of my best friends about her relationships and said “i must admit when you dated x i prayed day and night for you to find a better man, im not a prayer person tbh”. 

And that little dumb comment ended up here. I thought to myself why was I in fact not a prayer person and why and how did I pray in certain cases such as when running or asking Aphrodite for my friend to find a better guy.

So here you go, a crash course on prayers but specifically in hellenism. 

If it’s not obvious, each way of worshipping is different and if you don’t agree with something I say just don’t do it? Paganism in general is a very personal and free religion, so do whatever you think it’s the right way (be careful too pls). 

Let’s start with what troubled me the most, the posture. Did I have to kneel? Sit? WHAT?! Well here you go:

When praying to ouranic Gods or heavenly Gods, one should stand with hands in the air and palms facing upward (Burkert 1985, 75).

When praying to chthonic Gods or underworld Gods, as well as the deceased, hands mustn’t be raised, and the prayer should be murmured (Burkert 1985, 75).

When praying to einalic Gods or Gods of the sea, as well as Nymphs and spirits of the earth, arms must be spread wide towards the sea; the hands “are also stretched towards the cult image” (Burkert 1985, 75).

Position ready, now you should try to purify yourself through washing your hands, taking a shower, etc. (Miasma, this is all miasma go research kiddos). Why? WHY?! Well, Imagine someone comes to you all dirty and smelly asking for help... no fun right. 

Let’s assume you already are clean, get an offering to offer the gods and let’s start. 

Okay okay now, what do we say when we start a prayer? Do we say “Hey pal how you doing bro” (be kind enough to add the generic frat boy voice when reading)? The answer is obviously not but what should we say... I assume you have already decided who are you praying too, so we name/invoke the deity we are asking help/giving our gratitude too, most of the times this starts with a “Hear, O (deity) + (epithets you might think are pertinent for this specific prayer, optional)”. Not always though, I’ll be furthermore breaking down two prayers from the Iliad on this steps to make it even more clear. This comparison can be found below.

Done that? We can proceed to basically give an “argument” on why you, from all people, should be blessed with their help. This is not for to guilt trip the deity okay, this is to bring up the beautiful relationship you have with them, it’s basically a reminder of “Hey, I’m serious about our deity x worshipper relationship, this is no joke”.

Now ofc we have to say why are we praying for. Wealth? Love? Want to pass your exams? (I sure do). Please don’t ask for an unicorn, ask for something the gods can give you such as protection, a blessing, good luck at an exam: be creative but not too creative. 

Now that they are hopefully giving you what you’re asking for, we give back freely not because we want to force them to give us what we want. Basically the quote “I give so that you may give.” This can be considered as a “promise” on doing something like “I will practice violin daily for you” or “I will burn a candle for you”. You have your own practices so go with them. 

Comparison among two prayers

Now that we got this, you may ask yourself “Where the hell is Roy taking all this info from?”. So I’ll just analyze prayers for you so you can see the clear structure used by Greek Writers. Here we go through comparing two prayers from the best book on Earth, the Iliad:

[446] So saying he placed her in his arms, and he joyfully took his dear child; but they made haste to set in array for the god the holy hecatomb around the well-built altar, and then they washed their hands and took up the barley grains. Then Chryses lifted up his hands, and prayed aloud for them: "Hear me, god of the silver bow, who stands over Chryse and holy Cilla, and rules mightily over Tenedos. They are both fully aware of each others’ feelings and acknowledge them without saying it plainly, which I feel is very fitting for them as characters. They’re savoring the feeling of liking someone and waiting for the perfect moment to let it out. Artem even told her “I’ll wait for you” in reference to a confession, which… If there was any reason I started his playlist with J’s Lullaby, it was this. The two of them may be slow-burning to the point of frustration, but hey, at least they realize there’s a flame here after such a long time.

I must mention though: Rosa stealing the book and Artem saying it belongs to a ‘friend’…perfection.
