absolute hilarious scenerio of realizing i need to go back to therapy, only to get locked out of my patient portal because i guessed the wrong password number combination 2 too many times, and being unable to call to get it sorted out because after having next to no customers all day, all of the neediest people in the world decided they needed to come in at that exact moment and i cant call to talk about sensitive medical topics while i have people in the store

it's going very well thank you, except for the fact that im currently stuck in a comedy of errors but it's fine it's fine i'll fix it ,

so i've been looking at a couple old chronographs, right. basically they're mechanical watches but with a stopwatch mechanism on top, so they're pretty complicated with a lot of moving parts and adjustments. i'm learning a lot from working on them!!

first i look at chronograph #1 which is the most vintage of the bunch, and it takes me a couple trial and errors to figure out how to put it together with only my own photos for reference -

(that's so many screws to keep track of oh god.) BUT I MANAGE. AND IT SEEMS TO TICK ALONG... until it suddenly doesn't????

i decide to take a break from it and look at chronograph #2, which i have a much easier time with and seem to get going real well!!! until i'm about to put the hands back on and find out. that i managed to break the seconds wheel pinion when i removed the hand it connected to. in the very beginning of the process. soooooo that one is put on hold until we get in a replacement part. fun! fun.

so i go back to chronograph #1 in the meantime. a colleague thinks it's the center wheel that's the problem, so i dissassemble the watch only a little bit to take a look, but it seems fine. when i put it back on the watch starts ticking again! maybe it was just a hiccup of some s- no wait it stopped again. with a sigh, i decide to start over again, put all the parts in the wash again because i've fiddled so much with it the lubrication is probably completely off, and

usually you'd replace the whole spring barrel if you have one. but the problem with vintage watches, especially of more obscure brands, is that you're unlikely to have that at hand. but that's fine, i'm not getting paid to be here nor am i doing work for actual clients so i can absolutely spend a whole day doing This:

you probably can't tell but the pinion is supposed to be much longer. it was poking out of the cleaning basket and when i tried to pull it out of the cage i heard a snap. just the worst!!!! why am i breaking everything!!!!!

anyway ive decided to take a shot at making a whole new pinion for the seconds counter wheel

which is scary because it has a VERY LONG THIN PART THAT LOVES TO BREAK. this photo is from my second try because my strategy on the first was not very stable.

Im watching The Magnus Archives for the first time at the behest of a friend and so far its just like

Episode 1: ok, fun little horror stories. Seems competently written, but I'm not sure how invested I'll get in a story who's format relegates plot and story progression to the background.

Episode 14: Bravo. This story really got to me. Being threatened with a future in which parts of you are removed one by one, and being powerless to stop it, just having to live with the knowledge that soon there will be nothing left? Horrifying. The Magnus Archives is a horror podcast and it does it well

Episode 16: Ok, I'm with Jon on this one. You are telling me that this guy was haunted and killed by the ghost of a vengeance addled spider? Thats ridiculous. What a way to go. It's almost funny.

Episode 34: bone apple teeth. I think I've solved it. The Magnus Archives is an absurdist comedy. The institute, a becon of knowledge and understanding, is being contrasted with these stories that defy the ability to be understood. They are researching the paranormal, which is an oxymoron. The primary humor comes from Jon, a rational skeptic failing to accept the reality of an irrational world. This contrast is further exemplified with occasional bouts of mundanity (Tim complaining about errors in recordings, Sasha pondering the pronunciation of calliope, martin not wearing trousers), which further highlight the Absurd. So many people witness events beyond their comprehension, horrific and wacky alike, and then have to just go back to their normal lives like nothing happened, and it's hilarious each and every time.

I have a few things I would like to discuss about the new season of Good Omens. I'll unfortunately have to excuse any spelling errors or uncontrollable and un-intelligible babbling, my hands are shaking out of fear shock and adrenaline is going to be the end of me.

We'll have to begin with the elephant in the room. WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCKING FUCKITY FUCK FUCKS NO WAHOOS FROM ME THAT WAS NOT TICKETY BOO AT ALL. This was supposed to be a comedy. This was supposed to be the funniest Armagenope and the even funnier sequel. This was supposed to be quiet, gentle and romantic. WHY. AM. I. CRYING

Doctor Who is canon in this universe you know why? When he was selling the 1965 draft there were very clear TARDIS noises in the background....... I think the Doctor might have gotten the coordinates wrong. Must have been freaked out seeing a ginger version of himself through the window with Michael fucking Sheen.

All in all, I very much loved the season beside the incredibly unbearingly heavy angst that fingers at my eyeballs, scratches at my neck and burns my intestines. Can't wait for season 3!!!!!

because like imagine youre dan. he probably already had a good guess about what the situation was but his assumption being wrong is not out of the realm of possibilities. the idea that they could have talked about is not out of the realm of possibilities! if youre dan! if you just got here. if you didnt see all of s12.

like just imagine that scene! yaz just baldfaced lying as a way to like, bounce the idea off of him plus double duty to affirm her own beliefs that like the doctor never would plus triple duty paralleling 11x4 for 13 to ensure dan is never gonna ask about this again.

and WE'D KNOW. WE'D FUCKING KNOW. it'd be such a doctor move.

"have you ever told her?" "told her what?" "how you feel about her" "...yes." "well what did she say?" "i think you can guess" yaz snaps because she thinks she can. she has guessed or assumed or sort of correctly inferred a while ago that like, nothing is going to happen here, theres no point in her saying anything because the doctor isnt interested. and dan is like "i find her kind of hard to judge actually" because he still wants to hear an actual answer from yaz but yaz just laughs and goes "tell me about it" and then shes saved by a dalek.

of course we still want dan forcing their hand but thats easy to arrange by instead of him going all battering ram with "she likes you" in the next scene he just has to mention it. and i dont really know how he'd mention it because im not really sure how this would look to him.

so particulars to be determined but he does mention it In Some Way and now theres the doctor in a situation yaz indirectly accidentally put her in where shes suddenly having a Lot to process and also shes gonna lie about :) shes gonna lie about it so hard :)

maybe dan's guess is that whatever the doctor said was less-than-definitive ie vague as fuck because hes known her for like a week and has already seen how good she is at explaining herself and also because of yazs bitter "tell me about it" so maybe what he says is like "you better not be stringing her along"

and the doctor, in her perfectly inscrutable grey area between true What The Fuck Are The Humans Talking About This Time and a carefully crafted mask of obliviousness, goes "string her along what"

"i just mean that you gotta make sure your intentions are clear because it's really not fair to keep her guessing, and hoping"

and the doctor says "i dont understand what youre saying dan" because she really doesnt <3

and dan can still say his canon line "i think that you do, but you pretend that you dont" and in this case hes wrong, but he still hits the mark, wrong calculation right answer because the doctor is still like Fuck.

because she does know, of course. she does know about yaz and shes knows about herself and she knows what shes avoiding. and she will still do the same thing in sea devils. and this weird little lie yaz told will probably never come out. the doctor and her talk, dan isnt there, never sees how New this all is. the doctor has no reason to find out what yaz said to dan.

but we know. we know!!! we get to see this whole comedy of errors play out and still somehow arrive at the same answer. we have to live with how clearly none of them correctly assume each other's understanding of the situation. it'd be frustrating as fuck and such a nice encapsulation of what thasmin has been since the beginning. these half-communications that bounce off each other kind of painfully like billiard balls.

they would never find out. sea devils and potd play out exactly as they did and nobody would ever know. except us. it's a portrait of their shared fatal flaw finally laid out for us in broad daylight at the exact moment they come together. and only we can see it.

currently having thoughts abt p!Scott having been forbidden to swim in sea and lakes ever since he was a child (his parents knows that something in the sea wants him and will know where he is if he stays in water too long but they do not want to lose him).

now he's an adult and living life among the Faction Isle with his faction (and bf? Sausage), still not knowing how to swim but he doesn't care. Sausage doesn't think that's good for a pirate and drags Scott to a lake to teach him. They have fun and Scott forgets(has he ever really known) why he was forbidden to swim to begin with.

during a quest, Scott and Sausage stops by a small, hidden island that has a very nice beach. the two decide to go for a swim. at some point, Sausage goes up to land to fetch something or the like, and Scott is alone in the water.

Scott dives under water to cool his head for a bit and then he starts get the feeling that he's being hugged. loved, welcomed. he swears he hears someone say that he don't have to hold his breath, he just need to breathe...

he doesn't notice for how long he stays under water. he doesn't hear Sausage shout his name. nor does he notice how Sausage drags him up on land and tries to make him breathe again, to cough of the water in his lungs.

no, for Scott it's like a dream. he's still under water and someone is smiling at him and he feels safe and loved as they hold him. and red eyes locked with his as his face is craddled in their hands...

when Scott wakes up, he does not understand why Sausage is so upset. it takes a little to long for Scott to realize that they're back on the Isle and he's in the doctor's office and that he was so close to drown. Sausage had saved him, made him breathe again but he had been unconcious for a couple of days. (if his parents had been on the island, he would've gotten a scolding of his lifetime from them. but Christian does a pretty good stand-in job for that=

Sausage feels guilty for leaving Scott alone in the water and Scott has to assure him that it's not his fault.

in the coming weeks, Scott feels his attention getting drawn to the sea even more than it has ever been before. in fact, Cleo has had to stop him from falling into the water from the docks after she found him staring blankly into the water. Scott cannot explain why.

maybe it has to do with the dreams he has been having? of water, warm arms and red eyes? surely not, he hardly remember them anyway.

some time passes and new people arrive to the Faction Isle. and one of them has a mischiveous grin and red eyes...

Hello im here to yell about LBFAD because I'm enjoying it so much!! I just finished the wedding comedy-of-errors plotline (so like episode 24). I'm enjoying the characters, the world building, and that the fantasy is a bit more whimsical rather than gritty and dark. Like yes give me all scenes of an emotionally repressed evil overlord begrudgingly collecting morning dew! The war that's been going on for millenia can wait, we need to have several episodes of making soup and regrowing our Feelings Tree. I live!

I also really like the theme song 🤣

yesyesyes and yes!! the morning dew thing never fails to make me laugh cause it happens so early on and he's so grumpy about but he does it anyways. honestly you can't tell me he doesn't enjoy taking care of someone by spending peaceful time in solitude in the forest, like c'mon, plant dad, you found your true calling 💖

i've never heard the human realm arc being called that, i love it, it reminds me of a dark comedy play and honestly they were putting on a performance for a big part of the stay amongst the mortals

the theme song is lovely, i agree (and the intro sequence is so pretty) but my fave thing about the series, aside from the obvious stuff, has got to be the wardrobe, i just drool over the moon tribe aesthetic, the moon siblings have me in a chokehold (and the hair 😩) but also! the body swaps are the best thing, both dylan and esther ate that 🌟

i forgot how ensemble-lead the comedies are. midsummer has like 8 main characters, im not even going to bother counting how many are in this play but like they all have their own storylines and lives that I have to keep on checking to see who is who. also love how in most comedies everyone's basically besties and the conflict is soley based on miscommunication (hence the title comedy of errors) whereas the tragedies revolve around hatred and the need for power

(im taking "douman" as both his persona 1000 years ago and now)

the heels thing, I can totally understand, as a tall person whose only personality trait is being tall.

(and speaking of tall characters good god all the regularly appearing guys are so tall basically everyone is way above average height for asians)

In general

well, first of all, if i had to say in one sentence, he acts and tries to be serious but he's also not above participating in tomfoolery and being the butt of a joke (its a comedy manga after all)

for all that he wears a mask, he's one of the easier characters to get a read on (aka know what hes thinking) whether he's being honest or lying or tsundere

funny enough, the one moment i couldn't get a read on him at all was right after he killed seimei

actually if you'll notice, that scene had douman's face super concealed most of the time, either by the blood or his hair, or just turning his head away from us.

which wasn't the case at all for ch89, where his face was totally visible the whole time, up until he killed seimei.

funny enough x2, the character thats most IMPOSSIBLE to read is seimei. this man is INSCRUTABLE

i think it'll be useful to break down the different faces the principal shows to different people (or, "who other people think he is")

on a scale of principal to douman, there's:

principal (public persona)

principal, in private (who he is to the teachers etc)

acchan (who he is to ranmaru)

douman (who he was 1000 years ago, and who byakko etc see him as)

The Principal

the first two can be differentiated by whether the mask is totally covering his face

how much of his face is shown is also correlated with how much personal investment he has in the situation

the "who other people think he is" definition is also important. for example, for most of chapter 1, when he's interacting with haruaki, his mask totally covers his face, reflecting how haruaki's scared, and also how us as readers don't know what to make of this guy yet. but at the end of the chapter, when he's giving an extremely personal description of haruaki in front of the other teachers who he's also more familiar with, he takes the mask off.

also importantly, check out the 3 whole versions of this one scene.

this is 3 whole versions of how he’s presenting himself, in one situation.

i’m inclined to believe ch1 is POV principal, ch92 is POV haruaki, and the one in yoseito what objectively happened.

he’s presenting himself as a professional, as the “principal”. to haruaki, he’s unfamiliar, and the mask is probably the most stand-out thing about him. objectively, he probably can’t help but have personal investment in all this.

also, let's look at these 3 pages from ch33

you can see his thought process going from "wait, like, me personally?" to "ok gotta be grown-up and mature about this"

(also sidenote, izuna's speech bubble on that 3rd page is a tl error, it's more like "he's treating us? is there going to be a typhoon next week or something?" that kind of tone)

also of note is his mask itself, which is an Okina mask from Noh theater. the Okina play is one of the oldest plays still considered Noh theater, originating around the Nara or Heian period, from Noh theater's predecessor sarugaku. the play itself is more like a ritual or ceremony, a prayer for peace. the mask itself is the soft smile of a deity symbolising peace, bountiful harvests, and long lives. of note is the fact that the performer dons the mask onstage as part of the performance, "becoming" the god.

im sure you can see how this is quite relevant to who he is as the principal of hyakki.

this exchange from ch 70 is also very interesting, because he’s showing his face this whole time. looking at it now, it’s because he’s entirely confident that haruaki would be able to pull it off from the outset. he is a gambler after all, as much as that’s played for jokes. he talks a whole lot, but it’s ultimately just to pressure haruaki into pulling it off properly. as such, his investment in this situation is entirely personal, instead of professional.

in that sense, i suppose him taking off his mask to threaten haruaki means the threat is coming from him personally, rather than him as the principal and his boss. i’m curious to know what other people’s read of this scene is, him taking off his mask is an interesting move, even if it was just for dramatics

i also wonder if the dramatic shading we see obscuring his face is also actually happening, obscuring his face from haruaki. in ch 88 little memory-aki says “that appearance, the principal?!”, the word used for appearance in japanese is almost always used for specifically clothes/figure, rather than face.

Acchan

the principal and ranmaru are especially complicated. theyre exes. theyre besties. theyre fighting. theyre kissing.

at least for a short while before the events of the main story, it seems like they didnt have much contact, considering principal had to ask ranmaru what name he was going by in ch61, when they’d already met twice (vol 4 kidnapping and ch33), he just never bothered to ask i guess.

at least in vol 4, ranmaru was actually pretty openly disdainful towards principal (probably bc he got ghosted for years)

in ranmaru’s eyes, “acchan” is probably somewhere in the middle of “principal” and “douman”, maybe even the 3rd corner of a triangle graph

on the principal’s part, it seems like he’s trying to keep ranmaru distant, at least at first. this is someone who knew him as douman, after all. every single interaction they have, he starts out with his guard totally up and as soon as he lets down his guard a little bit ranmaru gets under his skin and they fall into something like a routine. in terms of ability to get under his skin, ranmaru is basically second only to seimei.

there’s also the fact that they’re such similar people. they keep going to the same brothels/pachinko parlors, for example. this is probably also how ranmaru is so good at getting under his skin.

i think all this can be summarized by the way ranmaru calls him “acchan” and introducing himself as “ran-chan”, then principal going for the more distant “ranmaru-san” instead, because thats who ranmaru is to “the principal”, regardless of who ranmaru is to him as a person.

this all serves much the same purpose as his mask, I think. to distance himself from who he was as “douman”

Ashiya Douman

to be clear, it’s not like any of these faces are any more or less “real” or “fake”. they’re all the “real” principal

“douman” is.... complicated

even within the name “douman”, there’s a few versions:

who he is when his mask breaks

who byakko etc think he is

who he was 1000 years ago

though, it’s not like he turns into a whole different person when his mask gets broken, he just holds himself in a slightly different way, especially because he’s in front of byakko.

these two pages can really be picked apart.

he first appears with his face slightly showing, because that’s who the students see him as, and who he presents himself as to the students. a familiar, reassuring face.

then when he addresses byakko the mask is totally covering his face, distancing himself. he’s desperately trying to keep up the facade for as long as possible. i’m the principal, he says, look at my cute narration box! he wasn’t getting out of this with his secrets intact and he knows it.

he tries to keep up the facade, and for good reason. byakko and the other gods have stayed the same this past 1000 years, and as much as he’s changed, he’s also stayed the same in ways

his mask getting broken especially brings the point home. he can change the way he dresses, he can change the way he talks, but his face is not just the same as it was 1000 years ago, but specifically as it was the moment he killed seimei, and that’s all he is to byakko.

(and he does change the way he talks, by the way. you kinda have to hold yourself with some formality as a principal in the modern day, whereas 1000 years ago he talked in this kinda brash and vaguely disrespectful way about everything, and addressed seimei and suzaku without honorifics)

(though it could also be because of familiarity. in which case, “ranmaru-san” is like 10 steps down in familiarity from not using honorifics at all.)

as for who douman was 1000 years ago, it’s a bit hard to define because we really only get to see two scenes, and both are in relation to seimei.

i would try to define him by way of defining who seimei is to him, but because seimei is so inscrutable i don’t know how to do that.

what i do know, is that i don’t buy his spiel in ch90 at all

while i do think it’s not entirely a lie, it’s also not the entire truth.

as much as he acted tsundere about it, he clearly had some respect for seimei, otherwise he would not let him get under his skin that easily.

they were clearly friends to some degree, otherwise he wouldn’t be “always so obsessed with seimei”, as ranmaru puts it.

which, i am all the more curious, who haruaki is to the principal. did he see him as seimei at one point? does he still? i wonder if there’s an intentional parallel in who amaaki is to the students, to who haruaki is to the principal and ranmaru.

In Conclusion

uhhh TLDR, principal is my scrimblo, my blorbo, my meow meow, i care him a whole lot, i think hes a super fun character

every time I think about harrows connection to gideon being so strong that gideons name is the last thing she says before dying despite having literally erased her capacity to comprehend it, I have to go lie down. like tamsyn really said love is so strong that it remains even if you carve out the part of your brain that feels it.

the importance of pov and kiriona gaia as gideon nav’s imperialist aspect

others have already made some really smart posts about how kiriona is gideon when she’s lost everything and everyone that made her who she was, and how even in the first two books, gideon was this terrifically sad creature who was disguised by the fact that she was her own narrator.

but I want to expand on that last bit, because yes. kiriona is a gideon who has lost everything, who has had to make tough decisions to survive, who has had to adapt to being primarily around her father (a manipulative asshole) and ianthe (ianthe). but this is also the first time we’re getting to see gideon from a perspective other than her own.

we’ve always known that gideon is a beautifully unreliable narrator - see her complete understatement of the fight before harrow opened the tomb, where she neglects to tell us that she almost killed harrow with her bare hands - but I think that for a lot of us, the introduction of kiriona was when we first felt that.

now, nona is not an objective narrator either (lmao). and she does actively dislike gideon (which is fascinating, and which I could go on about for several posts). but she does offer an outside perspective on gideon that we have, up to this point, been lacking.

because… yeah. sometimes, like anyone, gideon’s kind of mean. we know she’s a good person - her goodness is in many ways one of the central drivers of the plot - but that doesn’t mean she’s nice all of the time. it’s just that when she’s being mean to crux, or ianthe, or even harrow we can say, well that person deserved that. but the truth is, gideon has lived through the kind of hell that very few people could survive with any kind of goodness and softness left intact. she didn’t live through it, in fact. she’s just kind of… existed through it.

I saw another post point this out, and I want to reiterate: gideon’s goal, her whole life, has been to join the cohort. when we first meet her, we’re like, ok, makes sense, that’s the only ‘out’ available to her. and we kind of forget, even as we learn more about the empire, that what gideon wants to join is this actively and horrifically violent imperialist force. when we get to nona, and we meet hot sauce and her gang and joli and the angel and even the edenites, we expect gideon to have kept up with us somehow, to reject the empire. we want her to be one of the “good guys” (goodness in the tlt universe is another longass post I want to write…).

but gideon doesn’t reject the empire. because, crucially, she IS the empire - she is its heir, never mind the fact that that doesn’t really mean anything when the current emperor is immortal.

what I am trying to say is this: kiriona is gideon when you take everything from her, and then replace it with her father and everything he represents, and then take a step back.

that step back is crucial. it is what allows us to remember how imperialism - and by extension, or by metaphor, cruelty - works. gideon becomes cruel because she is in proximity to cruel people, AND because she is not in proximity to us.

THAT is what Muir is saying with kiriona. even the most kind, good, earnest protagonist can become a tool of evil in the right circumstances: and those circumstances include perspective. gideon, like it or not, is currently actively choosing to be a tool of empire. and if we were in her head, we might be able to - or we might be tricked into - accept her justifications for why she’s doing it.

the perspective shift is what allows us to see gideon as she - currently - truly is. it is no accident that this is when we get the outside pov. Muir allows us nowhere to hide; we have to confront what gideon has become and by extension what she always has been.

gideon nav is a good person, and I fully believe that in alecto we will watch her reject her father; I fully believe she will get to be a hero. but in order for that to happen, she - and we - must first undergo radical change and growth in terms of her worldview and attitudes. kiriona is not gideon’s final form. but in the same way that john is described by harrow as having aspects, kiriona is the aspect or facet of gideon that embraces cruelty, that perpetuates empire.

Muir tells us: even the most beautiful-hearted, trod-on girl in the world can become a tool of empire. but I have no doubt that in alecto she will tell us: this is how that girl can destroy it.

ALSO also - there are some huge overlaps (literally reusing lines etc) with elliot’s nonstay route, but here instead of kicking things down the road till like the very end, she very early on confronts the violent nature of his job. she tries to do her usual 'well it’s fine i guess’ thing but ends up being so guilt-wrestling about it she!! has a dream!! where shes walking through blood and hears someone call her name, and then blood's voice....

i am wondering if the unvoiceacted lines were her own voice. herself, calling her out for looking away for her own reasons... she wakes up terrified. but it’s looking at blood’s lamp gift that calms her down. 

i love seeing her wrestling with the ethics of “hanging out with people you find morally bad”! obviously of course we know what she’ll decide.

and it’s even more interesting with her own job... (that she doesnt yet know the true nature of).

their route is being sooo sweet though shes like. i feel comfortable around him i feel happy around him i enjoy spending time with him. wuv them
