Star Wars Analysis - An Eternal Cycle
"History tells us that, given enough time, all empires will fall. But if we do not also come to understand how and why they rise, we will remain trapped in this cycle forever." (Kin, Beaumont, "Introduction", The Rise and Fall of the Galactic Empire, 35 ABY, page ix)
"This is democracy. It is strange. And it is messy. It's not about getting it right. It's about trying to get it right. Yes, it's a bit chaotic. Certainly we will get some things wrong. The Empire? They cared nothing for democracy. They valued order above everything else. They wanted to be right so badly that anybody who even hinted at getting it wrong or doing it differently was branded the enemy and thrown in a dark prison somewhere. They destroyed other voices so that only their own remained. That is not us. We will not always get it right. We will never have it perfect. But we will listen. To the countless voices crying out across the galaxy, we have opened our ears, and we will always listen. That is how democracy survives. That is how it thrives..." Olia Choko
"The truth of the matter is, we have lost this war. The Empire as we knew it is gone. Already we were letting it slip when the Rebel Alliance grew in unseen spaces like a cancer. For us, this represents an opportunity to reshape ourselves... It is on us to retake and control the narrative. What will our story be? What—or who—is the Empire?" Gallius Rax
Before and during the Battle of Jakku comic, I've pondered the overarching conflict between the New Republic and the Resistance against the various Imperial Remnants, the most infamous of these remnants being the First Order. There are three phases to this overarching conflict: the final year of the Galactic Civil War, the Thrawn Campaign, and the Second Galactic Civil War (Rise and Fall did use the FO-Resistance War, but it's pretty much another Galactic Civil War. Some funny coincidence is both conflicts happened over one year and involved a son of Leia and Han becoming the big bad. I can see the conflict being renamed). All three conflicts represent a cycle that persisted in the galaxy for three decades: the struggle to preserve and safeguard freedom and democracy and how Fascism continues to survive despite its evils being well-known.
The New Republic and the Imperial Remnants teaches us that building a new democracy in the ashes of Fascism is an arduous task, and evil doesn't simply fade away, but it evolves till it's ready to strike once again. However, even when all hope is lost, a new generation will always rise up to prevent the work of their parents from being undone by a generation lost to a new wave of Fascism.
However, as Beaumont Kin points out, another problem comes after the fight. How do we prevent Fascism from rising again? The Empire was beaten, yet the Empire simply evolved into the First Order. While the First Order collapsed within one year of their rule, it shows how easy it is for evil to return.
After the Battle of Jakku comic run concludes, I want to further explore the three conflicts of the New Republic and the Resistance against the Imperial Remnants and the First Order. Hopefully, by also revisiting the various stories of the conflicts, I can better understand the themes that each conflict showcases regarding the struggle for true freedom and democracy. I will also give my thoughts on each arc of the comic run. Until then, we shall wait and see how the Battle of Jakku comic concludes to properly analyze the final year of the GCW.

Your post is not new but I just stumbled upon it and now I have a lot of thoughts about Catelyn’s grandmothers.
Let’s start with her father’s side of the family, we don’t know anything about Hoster and Brynden’s father other than the fact that Hoster missed his first shot during his funeral.
For what it’s worth, there is the detail that Hoster had brown hair- which is unusual for a Tully- this could imply that his mother was brunette. However, that hardly narrows it down.
My guess is that Catelyn’s paternal grandmother was a lady of House Mallister. My reasoning is that in Catelyn V ASOS (the infamous chapter about Robb’s will), she talks to Robb about his great-grandfather’s sister who married a lord of the Vale; Later that same chapter, Robb tells Catelyn that she’ll be staying with Lord Mallister in Seagard while he reclaims Winterfell. I think it’d be a nice detail if in the same conversation where Catelyn mentions Robb’s paternal great-grandfather, he in turn makes allusion to his maternal great-grandmother. This would also explain why Robb chose the Mallisters out of all of his bannermen, because they’d be Catelyn closest living kin outside of the Tullys.
That’s my first headcanon. Let’s say that Lord Fletcher Tully (see what I did there?) married Lady Teora Mallister and they had 2 sons, Hoster and Brynden.
Speculating about the Whents is a lot harder because we don’t have much information about them. We do know that the Whents only ruled Harrenhal for 3 generations- and I agree with the headcanon that Shella and Minisa were sisters since the ages of their children roughly match up.
The question now is, who would the second ever Lord Whent want to marry in order to secure their power?
I think that they would marry the Blackwoods. Do I have a solid reasoning for it? No, it’s just something that I want for it to happen. Maybe the idea of being in-laws with the Queen of the seven kingdoms was appealing to the 2nd Lord Whent, maybe Rhaegar chose the Whents to be his partners in crime because of that familial connection, maybe Lord Whent wanted the Blackwoods’ old and royal bloodline to polish his family’s pedigree. Maybe bats and creepy trees go well together. Either way, my headcanon is that Lord Ormund Whent married Lady Jocelyn Blackwood and together they had 2 daughters, Minisa and Shella.
That would give us a family tree that looks like this:

thank you for coming to my ted talk 🙏🏻
Specific ASOIAF things I’d really like to know (or if anyone has headcanons/theories they’d like to share)
Catelyn’s grandmothers
Alicent Hightower’s mother
the name of the Princess of Dorne (mother of Elia, Doran, Oberyn)—I know some people theorize her name is Loreza which seems possible
Selyse Florent’s mother

A glance back at where Boromir lay sleeping was made only to remember why she was letting a man, other than her Chieftain, to dictate her movements. If it also assisted her own leader and kin, than all was well. Once clear of the gates of Minas Tirith, a soft whistle stirred the air and a wild black Rohan warhorse soon stopped at her side. She swung herself up onto the bare back and were gone from sight in a matter of mere minutes. Spoken commands were not required between rider and horse, for they had learnt the silent tells of the other. Companions of old, few knew the true length of their friendship. but all were aware of Star’s unbroken wild nature and that the Rohirrim had classed the stallion as untrainable. A true son of the Mearas.
The land passed quickly as they moved across the border between Gondor and Mordor, instincts on high alert and remaining hidden from view. Only coming to a stop once Star would go no further towards the Black Gates, the entrance to that terrible land. She knew the limits of her old friend and appreciated that he had taken her this far towards her destination. The wild stallion nosed her gently, before eating a apple from her hand and returning to the greener parts of North Ithilien until her whistle sounded once more. Dark grey eyes followed the dust trail of her fast moving friend until she no longer could see him, before turning and slipping into the ruins of a old castle nearby.
Haerondir had been turned into a watch post by a few of the Ithilien Rangers, under the current command of Faramir’s Second. She had a quiet conversation with Anborn about what Denethor had sent her to do and left what she didn’t need in the room they had given her. Thoughts slipping momentarily to the Gondorian Captain who she had left behind with her heart. Never thinking that he would follow her to the Black Gates and the scouting task she had been set. A task that few would dare take on and even less would return from; a perfectly good solution that Denethor thought would let his eldest son find someone far more suitable for him.
With their relationship being so new and his father not liking her, Hal had been painfully aware that she was trusting Boromir with her more vulnerable side. One she had hidden from the world when just the tender age of five. For now though, her attention switched to being fully on the scouting task ahead. Dissociating from her emotions and thoughts enough to concentrate on the Black Gates from her hiding place. Although seeming focused completely on the Morannon, the soft spoken Ranger tilted her head slightly as the familiar presence appeared by her side. Dark orbs remained fixed on the enemy ahead, hoping that for once her senses and instincts were wrong at who it was.
His question destroyed that faint hope, that it was exactly who she thought. Denethor had sent her on a mission to a place that few returned from alive, getting her away from his treasured eldest son and Boromir had followed her there.
“Boromir…”
His name was whisper soft on her lips, eyes finally drifting across to focus on the Captain she loved. This was where her ability to multi-task came into it’s own, for she could focus on what he was saying and their surroundings at the same time. Hearing the sadness and fear, Hal reached out a fingerless gloved hand and rested it on his hesitantly, unsure if her touch would be welcome at that moment. It remained there briefly, before returning to her side; a mixture of surprise, love and a quick flicker of fear breaking through the infamous Ranger mask of stone and neutrality.
“I..-“ Her words came to a stop, something making the expression on her face twist and already dark eyes went a shade closer to pitch black. A familiar shiver of cold went through her, despite the lack of wind, causing her to look up the hill and spotted the ghostly Wain-riders’ Chieftain staring back. Hal turned back to Boromir and tried her words again. “I love you too, Boromir. And I never wanted to leave you the way I did but I was given no choice. But can we return to where I’ll be staying the night, for I don’t wish to be out here when the light fades. It’s not safe.” She murmured quietly, pressing a gentle kiss against his cheek until they got somewhere slightly less dangerous.

@rangers-arecool asked: Leaving a sleeping Boromir in the dead of night was not something that the quiet Ranger wanted to do. But he had spent much of the afternoon and evening dealing with his father, leaving him worn out when he'd finally gone to bed. She pressed a light kiss to the corner of his mouth and slipped out of the room, just as silently as she had arrived.
A chain made of black obsidian rock, usually found around her neck, and a note explaining she'd been asked by Denethor to go scout out the plains near the Black Gate were the only items left of her presence. At the bottom of the note and written in a very hesitant hand, were the words, 'I love you.' // 💜
Scarred in three points, the span of flesh on torso and chest, the proof that survival and resolve bested Orcish powers, tainted weapon and blackened hearts. Awry and tired, turned more ugly in matters of body, the concerns of the skin, Boromir was, nevertheless, glad to be home. Marble stone and concrete - pillars that reached to the skies above, glistening in pikes and peaks of pearl and silver - banners caught in the breeze, blues and whites swayed. Returned to his people, the ones most loved, those for whom sanity had been lost for. Good friends who smiled so bright; their embraces most welcomed, so needed, the gentle touch of kisses upon cheeks. Hands clasped in firm grip, the feeling of fingers wrapped around and refused to let go, the warmth of Faramir when the chance to be alone graced. Dressed in their garb but as far from warriors as could be had, brothers together again with the happiest of tears, the sensation of wetness dripped down. Onto the jawline, throughout beard and stubble-hairs, until there seemed to be no more cries left.
Ever a loyal and proud son, Boromir relished in the reunion of he and his father. Denethor enthusiastic - within the grand throne room, sunlight brought against window and opened curtain - thin lipped smiles sweeter than the previous scowl, eyes all but colored in a familiar radiance, what had once been but could never be anymore. Accompanied by Pippin and Gandalf, worries for the war melted from the afternoon into the night, the change of bold sun into vibrant stars. Diplomacy married well with obligation of family, the unknown and the understood made into one, a ranger cloaked in her regalia, ever there but quiet. Never beyond the glance of Boromir, Hal and he were inseparable. Since the day that Orcs dared to poison, their brutal force pernicious, an effort to kill committed without pause. An attempt that went not beyond the woods where it started. Finished there, Denethor hid little of his unease about her, always a look of disdain for dear Hal. A soldier of small regard to he; a thorn in his side, an object of undoubted distraction meant for his eldest, the apparent keeper to a gentle heart.
A phantom affection, the kiss that Hal gave to Boromir lingered still. A mysterious possessor's token. Past the hours since she was last within his bedchambers, sheets not slept in and hardly tossed around an exhausted body. Clothed despite, never gone through the process of undress, the letter and chain that dangled in his hands were heavy, sleep-placed haze slowly lifted from Boromir once he removed himself from the bed, wandered and walked the space of his room. She loved him. Hal loved him. Cared for he and adored, gone off to the Black Gates, the request of Denethor but for more reason than the obvious. Overwhelmed but not unhappy, with her chain around his neck did he follow her path, the way that was asked of her, onward to the entrance of Mordor. Surely reckless, a death unneeded would have come for poor Hal. Captured, tortured, used against the intentions of good; Boromir could not stand to think of it, his locks uncombed and his person unbathed, dirty from the prior journey but unable to care.
Run across hill and valley on foot, shield and Arphendil in hand, favored sharped blade, Boromir only stopped once he saw her. Crouched low nearest a mound of soil and weeds, Hal with her hood drawn over the head, focus shifted from one enemy to another. Fixed to the situations of her surroundings; clever, the greatest of her kin, bound to know it was he who followed. Grand tries made in the effort, Boromir had yet to trick, to conceal or to remain unnoticed. Hal was marvelous.
"Did you really believe a letter would be enough?"
Boromir asked, sank low in his stance, a captain within the bounds of cover, baritone stern but not in threat or anger, rather blanketed in sadness and the tremble of fear.
"Forgive me, Hal, for approaching you so boldly, but I must have my say. After all the moments spent together, fighting the foes of Mordor, of which we stand before now, you left me. Parted from me with but a kiss - a kiss that I know for certain was of your lips - a letter, and a chain of black obsidian. Under the command of my father, I understand, but nonetheless, you left. You left, and did not allow me the chance to return my affection. You were gone from me, and I didn't get the chance to say goodbye."
Gray irises brushed glossy, the delicate gathering of tears, Boromir cleared his throat in rough cough, muffled by the back of his hand.
"How could you come here alone? Your strengths are beyond measure, your capabilities unable to be compared, but Hal, can you not see? Never mind the wants of my father! Gods forbid, had the evils that lurked here taken you, stolen you from your friends and family... can you not see how great my heart would break? That my dreams would be filled with nothing but torment? That my happiness, all that I have come to know of it, would disappear, be forever gone? Hal, you left behind a letter, but so, too, have you taken my heart. It came unexpected, but I do not deny what has come over me. Never for the sake of my father, never toward myself."
"I love you. With all my body and of all my soul, I love you. Try not to discourage me from this place, for I will go where ever you do. You'll not be alone - not as long as I live. Scold me later, if you must, but promise me that you will give me time to repay your devotion, to make right what I have wronged. Because, my darling Hal, I am desperate for another chance at your kisses. Their touch has not abandoned me - I feel for you still."

I've decided to be nice about this, even though you're making a very obvious bad-faith argument. While i think, nonnie, that you're just taking a piss and never read the story in question because otherwise you'd have understood the reason perfectly, there might be some confused readers or just people who wondered why we decided to ignore the show casting. After all, our intention has never been to hurt anyone.
Reason 1: Congruence
The show's worldbuilding is infamous for its lack of coherence and historical inconsistency. Velaryons have never been the underdogs who have just managed to rise under Corlys' leadership. They were among the first to swear loyalty to Aegon I. Before the Conquest, Velaryon Lords often married Targaryen women, and in turn, they provided brides back to the family on Dragonstone. After the Conquest, they turned the post of the Master of Ships into the 1st nepo office in the kingdom. Velaryons and Targs are goddamn cousins. The only difference is that the Velaryons aren't as inbred, but since they keep their distinct "valyrian phenotype" by the AFFC timeline, you can be pretty sure that they practice the same kind of eugenics as Targs do, only to a slightly lesser degree.
They've woven themselves into the tapestry of power, clenching tightly to the ruling house. By marrying Alyssa Velaryon to Aenys, they effectively made themselves the royal kin, second only to the royals themselves. Alyssa's children continued the line and after the two generations of brother/sister incest, Viserys I was still technically half a Velaryon by birth, as well as Boremund Baratheon (Alyssa's son from her 2nd marriage). Does either of them look like they have black ancestry? If you make a casting decision like that, you must take it to the logical conclusion. If Valyrians are PoC, then Targs have to be PoC, and Dany's relative paleness can then be explained away by several generations of intermarriages with Blackwoods, Martells (skin colour debatable) and Daynes.
But that's not what the books show. Rhaenyra throws a racist fit at the thought of her darling unclehusband cheating on her with someone darker than a baguette.
Reason 2: The Show Ain't Shit
To continue the previous point - had the show actually taken the choice to increase the diversity of the cast seriously, they'd have, idk, cast black actors as Targaryens as well - but that didn't happen, because the showrunners wanted the brownie points for looking progressive while doing only the bare minimum. Dammit, why make one of the two Valyrian families black, when you have a whole ass continent the size of South America that should have far more diversity than what we've seen? Why aren't Hightowers black? Why is nearly everyone lily-white except for Rhaenyra's cheerleaders? Because the show is taking the laziest route to make Rhaenyra look like the better, more progressive option, when she's nothing but an entitled, spoiled moron whose greatest asset is her hairdresser.
Do you understand how cynical, lazy and tokenistic that casting choice is, anon?
And yes, the show makes 0 sense and I won't apologize for that:) George's declarations about his benefactors kinda matter not in our foefiction ;)
Reason 3: Themes
Valyrian supremacy and the criticism of it, the damage it does to the individual and the society is one of the key aspects of both canon and OFCIR. GRRM himself said once that at first he wanted to write the Valyrians as looking vaguely African - except that he thought better of it because criticising imperialism and racism while casting black people as the culprits would've been tone-deaf to say the least.
We didn't write this nauseating part for you to skip, nonnie, and to accuse us of racism:
Father used to call his goodsister any number of foul names. A conniving snake who had whored her way into his brother’s bed. An uppity bitch who got airs after she had whelped a silver-haired pup. In the privacy of their chambers, Rhaenyra had never referred to Queen Alicent as anything but ‘the concubine.’ “I understand not where my father left his wits when he took her. Swarthy as a fisherman she is, completely unsuited to the crown on her head.” On Dragonstone, even the lowest cotter toiling over his narrow patch of land possessed some mark of Valyrian descent. Two hundred years had passed since Aenar the Exile had settled the island with his household. Valyria had burned her children while Dragonstone yielded one silver-haired babe after another. Aenar’s wives and daughters had been fecund like black soil, and his sons had devoured their pleasures between the thighs of women, free or not, leaving behind crops of new generations. Velaryons had plucked their share of that harvest and had offered their own seed in return. What else tethered them to their ancient homeland but the markings of the old blood? The Narrow Sea had washed them up on the sandy shores of the sunset lands, fire and blood flowing in their veins, ancient and magical. Father had shared the stories carried over the sea, more precious than the heirlooms forged from that blood-black steel. Targaryen was a flame brighter than a thousand suns; Targaryen was a will sharper than the tip of Blackfyre. Targaryen was the legacy bequeathed to them by the grace of the fourteen gods when Daenys had woken from her dream. They were the people chosen by fate to seek and to conquer and to keep these lands. How dare the harlot of Oldtown think herself worthy to be the king’s rightful wife? Daella’s sacrifice had given King Viserys his only proper bride. The blood of the three green princes had been too diluted for any Targaryen to bow their heads to them without shame. Such had been the opinions of the Prince and the Princess of Dragonstone, and yet the dark locks and the amber eyes of Rhaenyra’s three eldest sons had remained a question better left unanswered. Still, that diluted blood had prevailed. Father , Baela thought, bitterness seizing her, what would you say if you knew that unworthy seed was expected to sprout in my belly?
In OFCIR, we're underlining the racial tension by drawing attention to the Hightower heritage. Alicent and her children were noticeably darker than the average Targ and that absolutely affect their worth in the eyes of their pureblood Targaryen kin. They were absolutely facing discrimination based on blood/racial politics. Now, how would that come off if we were to use the show's casting decision? Would Daemon marry and procreate with a woman he didn't consider his equal when he treated his first wife abominably??
Be honest, nonnie, you're just pissy that we're not writing yet another Daemyra Apologia:)
Ok, I've gotta ask, why make Baela and Rhaena white? You and your co author have to see how that absolutely reeks of racism, right? Like we get it, the disdain you two have for the show/source material is just unmatched, you're so above it all, blah blah blah but it's just such an unnecessary change back to the book material when even GRRM was like "no, I agree with this change, this cast and story needs more diversity."
You don't even have to answer this. Hell, you probably wont. But maybe sit in the reason why you felt the need to do that in the first place. Because theres no reason that makes you coming out looking good.
I'm going to let @aifsaath answer this one, since I've shared my thoughts before!
