Modern technology in one story.

Today I bought myself a new WiFi adapter for my PC. My old one is like 18 years old, could legally drink and also was crooked from birth. Which made it impossible to screw it securely to the case.

So I'm reading a small booklet how to connect it properly (always do it, even if you think you know it). Taking out the old one. Connecting the new one. Turning on my PC. It has no idea what even "network" is.

Okay. Back to reading the booklet. It has small coquettish text "now look to the other side ;)". On the other side is the internet link to the driver download page. Which is cool. I can obviously download it. WITHOUT THE INTERNET YOU KNOW.

Turning off the PC. Connecting the old adapter. Turning on. Putting the link in the browser. 404 page not found.

Okay. I can use google. Found the site. Found the drivers page.

Clicked the link. It leads to Intel site (mistake). It redirects me to a "we are not working with russians, go fuck yourself". I JUST WANT TO DOWNLOAD FUCKING DRIVERS (please read it in the same cadence as 'i just want lunch!' from subway rant).

Okay, turning on the VPN. Downloading the drivers. Installing them. Turning off the PC. Swapping the adapters. Turning on the PC. It finally works.

Trying to screw the board to the case. The screw is bigger than the hole. I can't screw it down. Just like the old one

Dr. Shen's Log, Pt. 6

Dr. Shen Jiu, Head of Research at Cang Qiong Facilities. Date; 27, 5, 2024.

Our meeting and examination of ‘Yue Qingyuan’ went largely without incident. As we agreed, the mer followed Alpherg towards the surface, and breached near one of our research vessels. Upon reaching the surface he approached the boat and examined it, before making an attempt to place his hands on the side of the deck to pull himself up; Dr. Shang was able to dissuade him.

He seemed curious about our researchers and equipment, bringing his face close to anyone who approached the side of the boat and flashing bioluminescent patterns across his face. Dr. Shang claims these to be friendly forms of greeting.

We were able to gather rudimentary data from the mer’s position alongside the vessel, though Dr. Shang was also able to convince the mer to make his way into a chamber near the base of the ship; ordinarily used for the storage and launching of pods and submarines but repurposed for our examination of ‘Yue Qingyuan’ during this mission of Project Pisces.

We were able to weigh the mer at approx. 10 tons, and measure him at a length of 28 feet, establishing him as a largest mer ever discovered. The rest of our findings will be documented in a more extensive report.

I will not be commenting on the incident, as that has already been compiled in the incident report.

When Drag Queens Were King

With the conflicts about LGBTQIA+, it is fascinating to look back at the history of gays in American history. Once, not only accepted but widely celebrated, drag was a prominent face in the entertainment industry.

During the Shakespearean period, in the late 16th century and early 17th century, women were not permitted to perform on the stage. Men played the female roles. While this wasn’t exactly “drag”, it’s possible gay men took advantage of the opportunity to express their feminine sides.

Originally, drag was not only applied to men performing while dressed as women but, any performer dressed in costumes other than their own gender. In fact, the first recorded drag contest and “ball” in America took place in 1867! Men and women performed in Harlem, New York. There were drag queens and drag kings. Notable during the 1880’s and 1890’s was William Dorsey Swann. Known as the Queen of Drag, Dorsey was more than just a drag queen. An African American, born into slavery, was known for holding secret drag balls. The “Queen of Drag”, Swann, is believed to be the first person in the United States to lead a gay resistance. He held secret drag balls in Washington, DC. One part of the drag balls included a competition known as a “cakewalk”, originally held on plantations by slaves. Couples would dance in precise steps and formation. It is believed to have been a way to subtly make fun of the formal white dances pre and post emancipation. As dance contests, the winners were awarded with cakes!

The Jazz Age (from 1920 - early 1930’s) in large cities like New York, Chicago, and San Francisco saw the popularity of drag performers rise. Minstrel shows, vaudeville, and burlesque provided drag entertainment. Unlike many drag performers, Jean (Gene) Malin was not trying to impersonate a woman. During Prohibition, the days of the “pansy craze”, Malin was openly gay and proud of it. Described as flamboyant and effeminate, he entertained audiences with a wonderful sense of humor. At six feet tall and two hundred pounds, Malin had a lisp that delighted his fans. He was capable of defending himself when needed. He performed in high end nightclubs and was featured in films and on Broadway.

In 1920 Drag Balls and contests were so popular they were even represented in film. Men were referred to as “pansies” or “sissies” and were often portrayed as clothing designers or tailors, hairdressers, or choreographers and dancers. Flamboyant and effeminate, they added humor to films. Women were portrayed as more masculine and dressed in male fashions.

There were actors and actresses who were known to be homosexual, if not to the general public, usually within their professional circles. In 1930’s, Marlene Dietrich, who made no secret of her bisexuality, had the first passionate same sex kiss in a film. However, that wasn’t the first same sex kiss in film. In 1922, Cecil B. DeMille directed a silent movie l, “Manslaughter”, that included an orgy. Although the first same sex kiss has been attributed to the later film, “Wings” in 1927, it was the earlier silent movie that broke the mold.

Drag has once again become popular in America with shows like RuPaul’s Drag Race. On the other hand, the country is in turmoil. The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning, Intersex, Asexual+ (LGBTQIA+) community is already beginning to feel the change in the air, from the White House to every house, apartment, mobile home, hotel, or tent. The president has already signed several executive orders that will negatively impact LGBTQIA+ communities across the country. We can’t allow America to return to days of the Hays Code. We’ve too far to allow it to slip away.

Digital artists who only use a few brushes for their fully rendered artwork scare me. Wdym you don’t have several gigabytes of brushes that you barely use. What do you mean you use the same five brushes for everything. What do you mean there is such a thing as enough brushes??? You’re obviously wrong, there is never such thing as enough brushes.

I would describe all four of those with very different body plan words. The first one I would describe as “swirl” or maybe “swarm”. The second one is so ball that is a ball of ever I saw one. But if you need anouther word for that body type maybe… dollop? Orb? Idk I think if anything that one should be ball and all the other balls should be something else. It’s Too Ball. The fourth one makes me think of a very abstract fish if a fish were also a plane, so maybe “fish” or even “finned”. Actually I like “finned” better yeah. That last one is molecular that was 100% my first thought when I saw it “oh what a weird looking molecule I wonder what this posts about”.

Anyway all of this is coming from someone who knows next to nothing about digimon, in fact it is only because I trust you as a digimon expert that I believe those are all from the same game(?) and not just four random unrelated drawings. Hope this in any way helps ^—^ d

ok so that is very reasonable and makes sense, but there's a couple reasons that i'm not splitting them like that.

firstly- i actually have 2 different filters relating to digimon's shape/look; body and appearance.

body is relating to posture and limbs (ie upright, hunched, quadruped, taur, etc). it's basically the 'shape' pokedex category, but using words because i'm not sure how to code a drop down list with images, and i still need to have a word to use as a tag in order to filter the entries

appearance is what they look similar to (ie mammal, reptile, fish, ooze, humanoid, etc). originally, i only had appearance, but i was running into a lot of conflicts and conundrums in tagging digimon. for example:

on its own, i miiiiiight consider ancient volcamon (right) humanoid, as it's bipedal and has a fairly human-shaped head and arms, but it feels wrong to put it in the same 'humanoid' category as angemon (left) when angemon is just. a straight up guy.

then there's the case of something like these guys ^^^

i want people to be able to filter to just see these 'animal-like' digimon, but then these are also very different. so they're both 'quadruped', but in addition left is 'mammal' and right is 'reptile'.

so what i'm looking for is "body plan", and while "ball" makes sense for appearance (and i'm probably gonna add "ball" or "shape" or smth to the appearance tags, now that i'm thinking abt it), it doesn't succinctly describe the body/limb layout which is what i'm looking for

the other thing (and the reason i'm not just stealing the pokedex shape categories) is that digimon have. a lot. of body variation. so im having to make kinda broad categories in order to avoid having 30+ options, some of which containing only a single digimon, and making the dropdown list entirely unwieldly.

so i'm putting all of these in the same body category, because they all hit the same general vibe as 'wierd nonspecific thing that's pretty much just a face/head with no significant limbs'. i just haven't figured out what to call it

rn i'm leaning towards 'head' or 'limbless', but if anyone has suggestions then i'm still looking to see if there's anything better
