What it's like outside

It feels like you’re blind. Outside of your mech, so much becomes an empty blackness. The cameras facing in every direction are dead- no, removed. The two sensors called eyes facing forward don’t have nearly wide enough of a view to feel at all secure. Anything could be around you and you wouldn’t tell through the blank black void. 

Closing them doesn’t help. That only highlights your other missing features. The infra-red view doesn’t click in, environmental data isn’t fed directly into your brain. It’s missing. 

The hanger lights are too dim to feel legible but bright enough to force your eyes into a squint from the pain. Your body is so loud. Folding and squeezing and breathing like a germ. The breath past your lips and the ringing in your jaw. 

Your hands are shaking against the steel floor. It hurts that they can feel the texture, cold and smooth. Your hands shouldn’t be forced to feel. They shouldn’t be forced to be so soft or so weak. This isn’t what you should look like.

Your handler is here. She says something to you. It’s too loud or she’s too much for you to understand her, but she says something to you. Your eyes can all focus on her. She’s all you need to see. It doesn’t matter what you look like while she is here.

She looks away and it hurts again, your body so light and yet so heavy weighing down your mind. 

Suddenly she’s back to looking at you. Her words sharpen and her hand grabs at your short hair. Headcanons for techfolk vision

Cameras

As we can see from the episodes themselves, Cam vision is very similar to human vision! One way it differs is that when Cams are physically hit or shocked, their vision greys out with scanlines and other artefacts.

You can see a real-life example of this in this video, in which a skydriver drops a video camera and it keeps recording until it lands (in a pig pen!)

As the camera tumbles, it spins faster than its sensors can keep up with, resulting in the video turning into a series of diagonal lines. Most digital cameras record in a 'sweep', going from one edge or corner to the opposite one. It looks as though this camera records in a diagonal sweep.

This also means that Cameramen possibly don't see things like propellors and hummingbird wings as a blur, as we do - they'd see it as a choppy effect, depending on how the movement syncs with the Cameraman's framerate.

Here's a bird appearing to hover perfectly because its wings happen to match the camera's shutter speed:

As far as Cameramen are concerned, that's probably just how birds are! They don't see bird wings as a flippa-flappa or propellors as a rounda-rounda blur.

Presumably, Cameramen cannot perceive the chimerical colours, which are colours humans can see thanks to how our retinas form afterimages:

Soundkind

I headcanon that Soundkind primarily perceive the world through echolocation. It's not really possible for humans to grasp what this 'looks' like. We've all heard of Thomas Nagel's essay 'What is it like to be a bat?' But at least a bat is a mammal like us, so it'll have mostly the same neural pathways as us. It's not outside the realms of possibility that bats 'see' the world in the same colours as us, but the colours are triggered in the brain's perception by wavelengths of sound rather than light. But Soundkind aren't even animals! Who knows how a tech brain processes this data?

I also headcanon that the Soundkind can see with light to a degree, just not as well as a human, Cameraman or TVman. Their vision is low-res and is heavy on the reds (hence their use of red as an emblematic colour), similar to a human with tritanomaly.

Putting together the above info, here's how a Soundkind might perceive it using their echolocation overlaid with their optical vision:

TVs

TVs are primarily optic-based, like humans and Cameras. Their vision overlaps less with the human range than the Cameramen's vision does. TVs see further into the infra-red than humans and Cams (unless said Cams have specialised thermal vision), and their vision has much more of a purple cast, hence their use of purple as an emblematic colour.

TVs can see even in complete darkness (by our standards), because everything above absolute zero gives off IR radiation. However, an environment of absolutely uniform temperature would appear blank, because there would be no differences in IR for the TVman to see. In addition, TVs can't see the temperature of stuff behind glass - they would only see the temperature of the glass itself (same as the limitations for real thermal cameras).

My infra-red headcanon is purely based on the fact that TV remotes are usually IR-based (more modern ones use Bluetooth).

...I don't have a speculative image to show, because to my surprise I couldn't find good quality pictures online of the same scene taken with RGB and with thermal (so I can combine them the way I want them). They were all either postage stamp-sized or they didn't align properly. Hopefully you can imagine something!

This video shows something a bit like what I'm thinking of:

The video shows that the thermal cam has something called 'MSX', which combines the thermal image with the light image, giving you the thermal imaging info combined with the surface patterns from the light imaging info. However, my headcanon is closer to 'human vision (but a bit more purple) combined with a black-hot greyscale thermal image', as opposed to the purple and yellow mess seen here.

New gender term for me: Infracis

Infracis is a identity for cisness that is queer in its cisness. It subverts traditional ideas of what 'cis' means, and/or it is being cis in such a way that identifying as cis, or as your AGAB/ASAB, is more abnormal or unexpected than identifying as trans would be.

Some reasons that someone would identify as infracis:

1. They are intersex and identify with intergender, and/or with "intersex" as their gender identity, and thus consider themselves cisgender. Because this is not the traditional image of an aptobinary, perisex cis person, they would be infracis

2. They are multigender and consider themselves at least partially cis, but since cisness usually refers to aptobinary cis people, they are infracis

3. They are nonbinary and don't want to transition, so they feel they relate more to cisness, but because they are nonbinary it is expected that they would identify with trans, and not cis, so they would be infracis

4. They identify with an identity that is close to their AGAB or aligned with it, but isn't exactly it (like an AMAB xenoboy).

5. They are transgender and cissexual, cisgender and transsexual, or any other cis-trans combo that makes their cisness queer, so they're infracis

6. They're gender non-conforming and their cisness is constantly called into question because of the way they subvert it.

Or any other queer experience with gender and sex that makes one feel like they're cis in a nonconformant way, or subverting cisness. I'm multigender (aporagender + girl), isocis, and a label collector. I've joked that I'm "the least cisgender cis person" and I feel like my cisness is both subversive to traditional cisness because of my queer gender identity, and queer in its cisness because most people would assume I'm under the trans umbrella or just fully iso, because how genderqueer I am doesn't usually fit the idea of what a cis person is.

Etymology: Infra- meaning "below" "beneath" or "under" and cis from "cisgender," meaning "identifying with one's assigned gender at birth." The prefix "Infra-" was chosen for a few reasons. First, because of the subversion aspect of infracis. Second, because in the color spectrum, infra-red is a shade of red that's just outside of the visible light spectrum, so it both explains the way infracis transcends and goes beyond traditional cisness, as well as paying homage to the relative invisibility of infracis people's inherently queer cisness.

Oh my goodness YESS

So this is all based on Killer Moth's first appearance in Batman #63

Killer Moth was an inmate and we never actually get to learn his name, only that when he was released from prison he took on the role of the wealthy Cameron Van Cleer. While he was in prison, he *studied* Batman. Pieced together every interview and picture in order to construct a model of what the Batcave looked like and Batman's tool belt/equipment/etc., so then he replicated it but for crime

Mothmobile with radar, a trophy room, he invented guns that were impossible to trace. And, of course, the Moth Signal that as one guy points out, doesn't show anything, because it's in infra-red light

So Killer Moth makes a business out of selling these flashlights and then when people use, he gets a part of the profit from their heist. Killer Moth doesn't do much crime himself, just provides supplies and then acts as distraction to Batman.

So Killer Moth has equipped himself to match Batman in every way, except ...

Does he have a Robin? No, he answers, he has a GUN!

(I am endlessly entertained that the crime equivalent of Robin is a gun)

Further more, in his first appearance, Batman doesn't actually catch Killer Moth. Instead, Killer Moth catches Batman and Robin!

Killer Moth debates unmasking Batman, but decides instead to get Batman to show him the Batcave. There were some sections Killer Moth wasn't able to piece together from the his research, and he wants his Mothcave to be perfect.

Killer Moth leaves Robin tied up, threatening Batman that Robin will die if he doesn't drive Killer Moth the Batcave. Luckily, Robin escapes and uses a police radio to let Batman know he's safe.

Now is the perfect time to capture Killer Moth, Batman thinks, he can just drive him to police headquarters.

Only, Killer Moth *also* is tuned in to the radio. He recognizes the trap, leaps from the car and then they chase each other until eventually Killer Moth dives into a river and evades capture.

Overall a really cool and competent adversary, right? So why is he so lame in modern cannon?

Because in the follow up in Batman #64, Killer Moth gets out of the water only to run into some other crooks who laugh at him for being wet 🤷🏾

It's such a let down from this guy who was as good as Batman. I feel like he could have lasted longer as a guy who steps in every now and then and makes it harder for Batman to catch the crooks. Plus, you can get more fun scenes of Bruce Wayne and Cameron Van Cleer are dining together only to see the Bat signal/Moth signal and they both make awkward excuses to leave and are relieved when the other goes along so easily

Joker's first appearance also had him mysteriously disappear into the water, and I am definitely bitter that Joker still gets to be menacing while Killer Moth is reduced to this.

Explaining the Paradox Pokemon

I've been debating with myself on should this be a video or analysis on here, but after rewatching my older vids I decided the latter would be better.

Anyways Paradox Pokemon are the weirdo "gimmick" pokemon similar to Ultra Beast, and today I want to go in-depth on them and explain why they're the way they are.

Also before I go I start I just need to get this off my chest: YES THE PAST AND FUTURE PARADOX POKEMON ARE JUST DINOSAURS AND ROBOTS. THAT'S THE POINT. They're very obviously based on pop cultures extremist and fantastical take on what the past was like and future will be. This isn't anything new to A. Pokemon(look at Ultra Beast being sci-fi tropes) and B. Entertainment media

I feel like so many people treat them to literally or miss the point, cause they didn't execute them in the exact way they wanted(basically Galar Fossils 2.0). Whether which one is better or worse is at the end of the day subjective and this bloods/crypts ass discourse is like comparing American Girl to Bratz(their both dolls targeted to kids, but appeal to two vastly different demographics).

The Meaning of Scarlet and Violet

Before we can explain the paradox pokemon I feel like explaining why the games are called this is important for understanding the games theme of past and future(also to explain why their not called Pkmn: Past and Future, cause it's a very upfront and doesn't represent the Paradox Mons entirely).

Let's start of with explaining what is Ultraviolet and Infrared

Light and colors are the visible radiation we can see, so in turn UV and IR are the invisible radiations we can't see. The past and future are nothing more than history and speculation; they ultimately exist in our minds and art. This explains Paradox pokemon mysterious and contradictory lore/origins. Another thing to note is the meaning of Ultra and Infra being Beyond(UV) and Below(IR), which perfectly explains how their based on pre-existing pokemon, but made stronger, and live below the region of Paldea in Area Zero.

This also explains why they're in a region with a gimmick based around types and legendary pokemon with a light motif both themed around crystals. Tera is the visible spectrum of colors, while Paradox pokemon are the invisible spectrum of radiation

Next is explaining Red and Purple(and also warm and cool colors)

Starting off with warm/cool tones are descriptors for two groups of color on the opposite ends of the color spectrum. How does this connect to the Paramons? Well next we'll explain what happens to water when warmed and cool to the extreme.

On the left are ice molecules and right vapor molecules. The ice molecules are aligned in columns and rows and fill out the box in an orderly manner. And I'll let this other image explain the vapor.

This explains the essential themes of the paradox pokemon: Chaos(past) and Order(future)... to the XTREME. And that red and purple being the farthest colors on both ends of warm and cool tones are used to exemplify that.

Before moving on I'd like to point out how on a wheel, despite being far apart red and purple are bridged together. This will be important later

Now let's start off by explaining the Past Paradox

The chaotic ancestors fueled by the scorching sun, Ancient Paramons have: yellow eyes, eye markings, sharp teeth, warm red colors, long/messy hair/feathers/etc., and spikes or tail.

Getting the most obvious details out of the way the teeth, hair, and spikes/tail are all to call back to dinosaurs or cavemen. Common creatures constantly portrayed living in the past.

The eye markings could call to punk/rock makeup with them looking like sharp lashes or mascara.

Also something to notice is that the ancient pokemon have a lot of motifs and all the designs incorporate them in a way that's sorta messy and overdesigned. This exemplifies the overall theme of chaos(if that wasn't obvious).

The use of yellow for their eyes could call to yellow's association with hazard. The use of red is similar to yellow as one of red's symbolic meaning is danger; which exemplifies a key part of paradox pokemon lore.

Add-On: Since I explained the names and shinies of the Future I just state, that the past Paramons shinies reference the og pokemon shinies and their names reference how dinosaur name meanings are upfront on their appearance and behaviors (T-Rex- Tyrant Lizard)

Now onto their gimmick involving the sun weather. The sun is a natural resource that a lot of creatures depend on to live, and can be used to fuel technology. But it's also an energy source that cannot be controlled due to space, weather, climate, etc.; furthermore it can cause drought's or wildfires. This line up with the lore of Ancient pokemon drawing their power from a "primal energy"(the sun) and fits with the chaos theme, but also gives us some hints onto the world they come from. That being a harsh climate that involves strength to survive.

Next is the Future Paradox

The orderly descendants powered by electricity, Future Paramons have: y2k fluid, L.E.D eyes, black sclera, and fully mechanical bodies

The fluid, L.E.D, chrome shinies are Y2K AS FUCK. The fluid could reference lava lamps a 60s decoration that had a resurgence in the 90s(when Y2K started)(and also reference the 2000s 60s influence), the L.E.D eyes could allude to I-Pets. Y2K was an aesthetic that referenced the fearmongering phenomenon of the same name. This exemplifies the pokemon being from the future and makes sense when you take into account Scarvio development cycle lining up with Y2K resurgence and Pokemania.

Black has a lot of symbolism that could apply to to the theme of order and their paradox nature like: restraint, power, occult, mystery, bleakness, fear. But the possible main reason is it gives the an emotionless look which amplifies their inorganic designs that contrast with the Ancient Pokemon.

ADD-ON: Originally I didn't go in depth for the shinies meaning as I thought it was because of the Y2K Aesthetic, but i remembered that the base Future mons y2k fluids are a color of the rainbow(Treads- Red, Moth- Orange, Hands- Yellow, Thorns- Green, Bundle- Blue, Jugulis- Indigo/Purple, Valiant- Pink). And then I remembered also that Miraidon shiny is white the metallic texture just fucks it up, plus looking at the home models. the shinies use either gray or white as a base. Gray's notable meanings as a color are control and compromise, and white's meaning is cleanliness, blankness, coldness, emptiness, simplicity, and minimalism. Basically their orderly asf.

Something to note is how simplistic in executing these motifs the future pokemon do. Obviously like the past pokemon this exemplifies the theme of order, as they're more refined than the pokemon they're based on. This could also reference Technological Singularity a theory that states we'd advanced so far technologically that it'll lead to the end of humanity.

Add-On: To expand upon the Technological Singularity(and the whole rainbow Y2K fluid thang among others) the Future Paramons could reference the Singularity, which is the state or condition of being singular(as one). This could reflect the use of iron, and chrome shinies. It also explains the Y2K rainbow, as they basically emphasize how their parts with distinct roles to a greater mechanism. Compared to the past Paramons who are unique individuals.

Speaking of inorganic the use of electric terrain as the Future mons "primal energy" source could contrast the Sun as a natural, since electricity used for energy is produced through man-made/unnatural means. Similarly to the ancients this could allude to the future they originate from: possibly being one that wanted to have the strength of the ancient world, without the harsh environment of the past. Using technology and electric terrain to achieve this, with control over the world.

Now remember when I talked about the color wheel and how their connected and far apart at the same time...

Well the designs of both paradox pokemon also showcase this. Despite being complete opposites they execute certain motifs similarly. Using ST and IB as examples at a glance Scream Tail has more differences to the mon it's based on compared to Iron Bundle; however Iron Bundle does differ from Delibird through it's functionality(IB bag is a water cannon, it's feet are skies and moves through using it cannon as a propeller, and attacks with it's head and elastic neck piece). Compared to Scream tail which attacks and moves like Jigglypuff.

Basically Past pokemon focuses on physical changes, Future pokemon change focus on functional changes(Unless your Iron Fugulis)

Now circling back to explaining how their similar, both paradox groups: have face motifs that have slight variety, but are generally the same, past pokemon all have red in their palette but have execution variety meanwhile future pokemon fluid all looks the same but with color variety, past mons all have messy "hair"(although with slight variety: Sandy Shocks and Brute Bonnet) while future mons robot gimmick is expressed in a variety of ways(although with slight similarities: Iron Hands and Moth) , all paradox pokemon change physically and functionally in some way(Unless your Iron Fugulis); i.e. Walking Wake or Iron Treads.

ADD-ON: If this sounds like confusing word-vomit well that's because I was struggling to put this thought process to text, but after analyzing the future paradox shinies they perfectly embody what I want to say in a simpler way. All past pokemon have unique discernible shinies, yet all share the warm red motif(Unless your Sandy Shocks and Brute Bonnet then it's yellow). Whereas future mons all share chrome/metallic gray or white shinies with unique discernible colored Y2K fluid(excluding Leaves cause the legendary Paramons got their own things going on)(Unless your Fugulis)

TlDr: Paradox mon are similar as they are polar opposites, and living in a world that represents both themes at ounce is ideal(I.e. a world where rules and freedom exist in harmony. Think of diet Shin Megami Tensei). This explains why they're all threats to the present.

I dunno how to end this, so let me say Iron Jugulis is a godawful pokemon design. Bye

Apparently, Pit vipers have more advanced infrared sensory organs than boas or pythons do. It's basically on the face of the snake where a mustache would be, if snakes could grow mustaches. In Pit vipers, information from the 'pit organ' (I feel like there's a Slither Pit joke in here somewhere) is sent to their medulla before the optic lobe, while in boas and pythons, it is transferred basically directly to their optic lobe.

It's not like looking through an infra-red camera, though. It's not like how our eyes process light. It's compared to a bolometer (which I never heard of before) which are kinda interesting.

Basically, yeah! Kai has infrared sensing! It doesn't look like peering through an infrared camera, but it functions pretty similarly.

This would honestly make sense for detecting other Anacondrai when invisible, which would have been useful when Anacondrai were still a large population.
