Yep!

Gary's also a PhD/Doctor and pretty much no one calls him that and he hates being called Dr anyway (to the point that when other people do it he visibly winces in both FFS and UtB). And you'll notice pretty much no one says Dr Kent either, and he is also a medical doctor.

It's mostly context dependent, but if someone has a good working relationship with their doctor / with a doctor, first names only are common.

Australia is pretty egalitarian and while many would use 'doctor' in a formal setting (like saying that they want to make an appointment with a doctor, or the first time meeting a doctor) that formality drops over time. Some doctors - especially younger ones - will insist on first name basis only. I'd say outside of egalitarianism, it's also that Australia as a general nation is not hung up on hierarchies in this fashion and often feels deeply uncomfortable with references to formalised status. Respect is not about the title in front of someone's name, it's about how a person treats you overall, and vice versa.

I refer to most of my doctors/specialists (including surgeons etc.) by their first name, and that's not uncommon at all. But if I was booking an appointment I'd use the title, and if I was talking to strangers I'd also use the title. Some don't even go that far. And some are formal all the time. I've also had doctors be like 'you don't need to keep saying doctor, I think we both know that's what I am, just use my name' over like the last few decades. I've never had a doctor over correct and say 'you should say doctor when referring to me.'

Doesn't mean it doesn't happen, but if it does, they almost certainly weren't born here.

I just wanted to say that reworking Pascal and Nico in a new setting was really enlightening and helpful for me. I've felt out of touch with my creativity for years, stuck in a cycle of trying to revamp a 15-year old setting that held a lot of nostalgia and past identity for me but was fundamentally derivative and holding me down. Seeing you talk about your process made me accept that I can let go in order to develop something that better reflects my current taste and the stories I want to tell. I feel a lot more optimistic now!

hi this is so incredibly relatable to me... i'm sure i mentioned it when discussing the restructuring but my first real setting was my whole world from 2008 to about 2017... and the progression and ramping up of complexity and stakes was crazy in that time. the first book was just a basic "we are teens having fun in the woods and we have powers :)" and the last book was like "after the alternate dimension battle with 3 separate versions of myself, the giant spacecraft colony (all that remains of a destroyed 3rd Earth with its own entirely unique culture following interdimensional nuclear war in the 1500s) has come to my planet and intends to mine the world for resources, humanity's only hope is a gigantic televised space coliseum battle against the colony's most ultimate living weapon"

this was NOT within the scope of the original story and world but for me it was like tuning in to watch a tv show with 10 billion seasons that never truly concluded... i rewrote the whole thing twice, even got pretty far in the previous rewrite in 2021, but at the end of the day i was just digging up and trying to frantically hammer into shape something that was, at its core, a thing i made when i was 12, just workarounds and post-hoc justifications for old decisions. i had to let it go. one of the reasons i committed to writing books for mvf (and specifically a trilogy) was so that i could hold it in that scope, not exceed what it was, and - critically - end the story. so like you said, deciding to have a 21st century inver add-on was just me picking the safe option because it meant i already loved the setting, and didn't have to commit to making something new, which i might not enjoy (my attachment to settings is extremely fickle). but in just keeping a hold over stuff that doesn't need a continuation, i was creating a self-fulfilling prophecy.

conclusion: if you find yourself constantly having to write fix-it fic for something you made, putting bandages over bandages, then just stop and make something new that's exactly what you want right from the start. it's crazy to be able to just make a bespoke world for these characters instead of having to bend my beloved Inver to fit.

honestly, it might have been something huginn and muninn came up with. they're pretty close in age still and i could see those two making that comparison, and it just kind of sticking. i dont think they take it as seriously as some other interpretations, especially because it's not an idea draxum has ever enjoyed or caught on to. he's pretty insistent leo is older and treats him that way, even though the difference in ages as he knows is not that large lmao.

it's more an inside joke/occasional convenience thing for birthdays, because i do think they started celebrating at some point. although i could actually see them gaslighting splinter's side of the family into thinking theyre actually like biologically that way. hatched out of the same egg and everything. otherwise it's more like "it's so close we're basically twins", especially from leo. donnie's probably going to refer to him as older in his internal narration a lot more than when i write his canon self, but to other people he just vaguely kind of calls leo his brother, no other specifications. mikey knows leo is the older of the two, that's extremely obvious, but i do think he gets tricked into the twin thing with raph and splinter lmao. maybe they end up getting genuinely attached after a certain point, especially since they have other brothers now. it's something a little special for them. they do everything together anyway, already.

(raph realizes like two years into knowing them that they're different turtle species and the "hatched out of the same egg" thing couldnt be possible, yes it took him this long. he suddenly is worried that evil mean bad horrible draxum lied to them and he braces himself before telling them, thinking its going to break their hearts, and they immediately LAUGH IN HIS FACE)

What character in fnaf do you wish got more attention/ characterization?

resisting the urge to say my usual suspects (gregory and vanessa) in favor of a character who’s always been kind of a sleeper favorite of mine, because i just recently realized the amount of fandom and canon attention he gets is really minimal and typically reduced to him being grouped together with the others of his line

funtime freddy (and bonbon) is my favorite funtime animatronic and one of my favorite freddies and it makes me so sad he’s barely developed in sister location, although the breaker room is so much fun. he’s so cool and mysterious in count the ways and in ucn too! in the rest of canon (except fnaf 6 which i haven’t played)…ehhh not so much. fourth closet i am talking to you. i just think he’s super silly and has a character that’s worth exploring, and in my opinion it should have been explored more in sister location. i kind of feel that way about a lot of the funtimes now that ive played through sl myself and found it to be pretty small and quick minus night 4, but it is a great game and installment in the series.

free my boy he’s done lots of things wrong but i don’t care. give him six seasons and a movie

some p5r spoilers, and this is mostly about sumire, and it's long again. do i need to keep disclaiming that these are long? you should know me by now.

i had this written for a while before i started formatting it because i wasn't really sure if i should post it? i feel like silly chatfic is something people go to for predominantly lighthearted nonsense so i was like, maybe there's too much plot and dramatic misunderstanding and i should just keep this one for myself. but then i was like well nothing matters and maybe someone will have fun with it. it's kind of terrible how much fully or mostly completed fic there is my docs that just doesn't see the light of day lol. write for yourself etc but i like sharing! too bad it comes with the mortifying ordeal etc. anyway that was a tangent

potato counter is a neopets game. there's no deep lore i just like neopets. i guess in this universe ryuji doesn't play neopets? or maybe he's just never played potato counter specifically. i also have a different fic where ryuji DOES play neopets. it's about neopets and ryuji and goro talking on neopets.

i think this might literally be the first time ive written sumi in a fic because i haven't actually written that much fic for royal, like, now that im looking, literally almost none? and none that had a group dynamic. so it was kind of fun to find her voice for the first time in a silly groupchat like this. i was worried people would find her exclamation marks annoying but i personally thought it was endearing so i added it in there.

every time i do a gag where a character corrects their own typo i have to code more stupid little bubbles to make it happen but i think it's worth it. all the effort that goes into making tgis look as much like a real chat as possible

this obviously doesnt take place in the canon p5/r universe, but im imagining sort of a postcanon sumi personality where she's more comfortable being herself and isn't borrowing kasumi's brand of confidence, but she's visibly a really anxious person without that kasumi veneer. i also think in this universe sumire is a fairly recent addition to the friend group, and while everyone likes her a lot and she really likes them, i kind of wanted to emphasise that feeling of being in a friend group where everyone's established and you're sort of a plus-one? you don't really fit yet. part of that is her being new, part of it is her anxiety, part of it is just the kind of person sumi is where she's so polite and self-conscious she ends up taking herself out of things with her own good intentions. stuff like her interrupting the flow of an existing conversation by greeting everyone instead of jumping straight in because she doesn't feel comfortable inserting herself, which means everyone else stops to greet her even though that doesn't normally happen in a friend group, or making a point of thanking everyone for being invited to events while the others take it as a given.

idk i love that she feels a bit out of place with the phantom thieves in p5r. and part of that is a natural consequence of being a new addition in royal who can't be naturally integrated with an existing dynamic but i honestly feel like the writing team realised that and acknowledged it, and really leaned into it, and that made it work incredibly well for me. like, it's part of her character that she's sort of an outsider. it's not like p4g's incredibly clumsy integration of marie and subsequent attempt to shove her down everyone's throat as the canon love interest in p4ga (knife). sumi has that outsider vibe on purpose and it makes me really like her dynamic with the thieves as an individual

goro also feels slightly out of place in these chats, but his conversational style blends more naturally with the other thieves at this point and he even uses their codenames sometimes. i keep saying my chatfic series isn't a real Series because the lore keeps changing, but if we accept that they're all kind of following a General Continuity, assume this takes place some time after the last fic in which ren added goro to the groupchat and they made an effort to integrate him into their friend group. he's kind of there now and has settled into being the weird boyfriend. that's his role.

every time goro says something like "ren and i" assume it's the text equivalent of him talking to the group with his arm around ren's waist.

ok i got really fond of this silly running joke where sumi brings up the weather when she's feeling uncomfortable. she's so polite. i like this thread because setting it up meant i got to tie it off like this:

this just made me happy lol i liked writing this. i tried to use it to demonstrate that despite goro's abrasiveness he obviously knows sumire pretty well, he's attuned to her quirks and knows how to tell when she's having a bad time with her anxiety, so he uses her little weather habit to ground her.

i honestly dont think goro and sumire could be considered close in p5r and as much as i like the "royal trio" in canon they're not really... like... friends? with each other? they're both attached to ren, so it' more a V shape than anything else. but that said, i really LIKE goro and sumi's canon dynamic. he takes a really grouchy but politely attentive supervisory role to her during their few forays into the palace as a trio where he doesn't really know her well but clearly identifies her as a harmless little tryhard who needs some guidance and steps into that role grudgingly, and she immediately looks up to him despite being very wrong footed by his ruthlessness, which i find incredibly charming. i think given time they could be good friends, they just didn't get much chance to know each other very well in canon. so i tried to kinda do that here.

once goro stops being evil and joins the group they all kind of tiredly accept that his role is to occasionally push a cup off a bench while smirking and refuse to clean it up. emotionally, i mean.

in this scene they're in the same room lol talking and snickering while typing. im trying to get at that vibe of the annoying couple who is flirting with each other, via you. you know? like ostensibly they're talking to you (sumire) but everything they say to you is part of their stupid game. sumi is incidental to goro and ren teasing each other about flirting with someone else, goro is reporting everything ren says because his boyfriend is so eye-rollingly foolish in a cute way. they're very tickled by how amusing and charming they are. gross. disgusting. sumire im so sorry for putting you through this

oughhh this is so hard to choose! probably 'the suffering game,' though! honestly the reveals in that arc got me way more hyped than the stuff from 'the stolen century,' though i'm sure that's considered blasphemous to say 😂 but even the smaller reveals of that arc (i.e. the no healing in wonderland moment) just felt so well done...

ive typed out like four or five different paragraphs about it and deleted them because i just can’t put into words the experience of watching that episode After knowing how everyone reacted to it on airing. there was some part of me that was being overly generous in thinking that Maybe there really was something missable about this, but i’ve seen it now. it’s. you can’t. you can’t possibly miss it. it’s there from minute one and it’s so viscerally uncomfortable being Stuck with lindy while she constantly insults the doctor and ignores him and. god. god.

i think it was the right choice, for the episode, to stage it from lindy’s pov. but i’m also so so aware that it’s putting things from her perspective that’s got to be making some people just. able to be willfully ignorant about it. and i think the sudden wave of ricky september love is the most telling bit because. the thing about ricky. is that lindy likes him. is that he saves her. is that he’s kind and reassuring and sweet to her.

and the thing about ricky is that the one time we see him interact with the doctor. he can’t even look at him except for the one moment where he’s telling the doctor to stop being condescending to him. the same way lindy did earlier.

at the end, it’s very easy for people to turn on lindy. ‘yeah, of course, lindy’s a bitch, lindy’s racist, we all see that now! unlike ricky, who would have changed.’ it feels like. people very easily could cut themselves off from the nasty parts of lindy, proclaim Well, I Would Never Be Like Her, while refusing to acknowledge that they are still empathizing mainly with her and her pov. just pretending that that pov can be taken away from her racism. does that make sense? i’m not sure i’m wording it correctly.

because the episode i watched, i know that last scene wouldn’t have changed if it was lindy or ricky there. the only difference would be that ricky wouldn’t look at the doctor while he was telling him it was his duty to save them but that he was not one of them. lindy was bold enough in her ignorance and hatred to not care. so. idk. closing thoughts, tldr, what a good fucking episode. shame about the people who think the only thing you have to do to not be racist is to be ashamed and aware of it as you continue on acting the same way you would have before.
