Bensler are each other’s Person™️

I feel like we talk a lot about bensler as lovers and in a romantic way, and dgmw I will literally never shut up about it bc that’s my OTP right there, but I also think we we don’t talk enough about them being each other’s Person.

The idea of a ‘Person’ is kind of like twin flames. It’s separate from romantic soul mates or any of the politics of friendship. It’s innate. Its atomic. It’s the person that you have a galvanised tether to that person and it endures everything. Every other relationship, all the fights and trauma.

For Benson and Stabler it’s cellular. It’s why even though Olivia was in love with him and he kept hurting her, she still never wavered in her loyalty or her commitment as his partner. She was there for his family. Even when they took a break as partners she came back after a minute. It’s why Elliot went along with her insane plans when she found Simon without a question and why he often felt more comfortable leaning on her than his wife.

Yes, he’s leant on her a lot more than she has on him but that’s kind of the point of a Person. There’s no scorekeeping, there’s no need for a balanced scale because it’s beyond social convention.

It’s why Olivia was able to snap into support mode and be there for him, more than she should’ve been, when Kathy died. Because even though he abandoned her, hurt her more than most people ever had, that’s her Person and she couldn’t abandon him in his ultimate time of need. Granted, my girl put her decade of therapy to use and set some boundaries eventually.

I think that’s maybe a reason why tptb have taken so long to let them be together romantically. It’s a separate connection altogether. Romantic/sexual attraction is undeniable between them but it’s not inextricable from the bond they share.

And I always think about how he should’ve been there immediately when Liv got jumped by BX9 and he should’ve been the one that helped her hunt down Oscar Papa, (we can’t get into the Lewis arc bc that’s just like banging our heads against a wall) but I don’t think she would have called him because she wasn’t used to leaning on him yet. She hadn’t shown him that much vulnerability even when the stuff happened in “Undercover” she didn’t tell him how it affected her. But she knew he was there in silent support. She also knew that if she did call him he would’ve committed much unaliving. But she leant on him to take care of Noah and she probably talked with him about the whole situation in depth afterwards. Thats the thing about a Person, you don’t have to lean on them for everything but when you do they’ll hold you up however you need.

Then in the recent eps, Olivia seems much more comfortable leaning on him, texting Elliot first about this guy who’s threatening her son, (I’ll do another post about this) her being by his bedside when he’s in hospital before even his own mother. That’s not friendship, it’s something beyond love.

They’re each other’s person and that bond can survive anything. Even if they dated and broke up it would still survive because it means more than any other kind of relationship.

Caroline’s golden curls were a disheveled and knotted mess, small splatters of blood tangled in the usually tamed strands of her hair. Her tresses were somewhat like a halo around her head, splayed out on the pillow she rested her head on.

She blinked her eyes steadily, adjusting to the unfamiliar surroundings. Her vision was still somewhat hazy; she had been unconscious. The last thing she remembered was having her neck snapped by Klaus, the evil man who had sought after her dear best friend Elena for his own selfish purposes– to use her in order to break the sun and the moon curse that had been placed on him over a millennium ago by his mother, Esther, the original witch.

Damon had been bitten by Tyler before the ritual. Werewolf venom was lethal to a vampire and always killed them; there had never been an official cure for it. You tended to accept your fate– that was until Klaus activated his werewolf side, becoming the first of his kind. The Original hybrid.
