So this is an AU story with the MCU characters. So the ages and story lines with be changed and different from that in the movies.
I will right some history for each character as the story progresses just so ages and other things make sense.
All the Character's in this are played by their respective actors and certain aspects of the MCU have been added in. But once again its not going to be an alternative marvel story it is a completely different universe.
I don't own any if the MCU characters.

Early 18th Century Venetian 'Schiavona' Sword
The Schiavona is an iconic basket-hilted sword that was closely associated with the Italian city state of Venice. The earliest examples are believed to have come from an elite body of Slavic soldiers hired by the Venetian council, and date back as far as the late 16th Century.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Schiavona are identified by their unique basket hilts and 'cats head' pommels. The renowned sword historian and author, Ewart Oakeshott grouped the schiavona basket hilts into two broad categories, the simplified Type 1 with it's broad flat bars, and the Type 2 of lattice work design.
They Type 1 hilt began to appear around the early 1600's and the first Type 2 between 1620 and 1630. Type 1's remained in use for most of the 17th Century after which Type 2 hilts became dominant.
Over the life of schiavona swords, (1600 - 1797) their hilts became increasingly complex and ornate as they became associated with the character of Venice, with the upper levels of society also carrying their own schiavonas.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Based on the features of the hilt, this sword most likely dates to 1710 - 1740. The iron pommel and 93 cm blade suggest that it is of munitions grade and was likely carried by a regular cavalry man.
Stats: Overall Length - 1,075 mm Blade Length - 930 mm Point of Balance - 165 mm Grip Length - 135 mm Inside Grip Length - 94 mm Weight - 1,090 grams

Jaegers of Pacific Rim: What do we know about them?
There's actually a fair amount of lore about Pacific Rim's jaegers, though most of it isn't actually in the movie itself. A lot of it has been scattered in places like Pacific Rim: Man, Machines, & Monsters, Tales From Year Zero, Travis Beacham's blog, and the Pacific Rim novelization.
Note that I will not be including information from either Pacific Rim: Uprising or Pacific Rim: The Black. Uprising didn't really add anything, and The Black's take on jaegers can easily be summed up as "simplified the concept to make a cartoon for children."
So what is there to know about jaegers, besides the fact that they're piloted by two people with their brains connected via computer?
Here's a fun fact: underneath the hull (which may or may not be pure iron), jaegers have "muscle strands" and liquid data transfer technology. Tendo Choi refers to them in the film when describing Lady Danger's repairs and upgrades:
Solid iron hull, no alloys. Forty engine blocks per muscle strand. Hyper-torque driver for every limb and a new fluid synapse system.
The novelization by Alex Irvine makes frequent references to this liquid data transfer tech. For example:
The Jaeger’s joints squealed and began to freeze up from loss of lubricant through the holes Knifehead had torn in it. Its liquid-circuit neural architecture was misfiring like crazy. (Page 29.)
He had enough fiber-optic and fluid-core cabling to get the bandwidth he needed. (Page 94.)
Newt soldered together a series of leads using the copper contact pins and short fluid-core cables. (Page 96.)
Unfortunately I haven't found anything more about the "muscle strands" and what they might be made of, but I do find it interesting that jaegers apparently have some sort of artificial muscle system going on, especially considering Newt's personnel dossier in the novel mentioned him pioneering research in artificial tissue replication at MIT.
The novelization also mentions that the pilots' drivesuits have a kind of recording device for their experiences while drifting:
This armored outer layer included a Drift recorder that automatically preserved sensory impressions. (Page 16.)
It was connected through a silver half-torus that looked like a travel pillow but was in fact a four-dimensional quantum recorder that would provide a full record of the Drift. (Page 96.)
This is certainly... quite the concept. Perhaps the PPDC has legitimate reasons for looking through the memories and feelings of their pilots, but let's not pretend this doesn't enable horrific levels of privacy invasion.
I must note, though, I haven't seen mention of a recording system anywhere outside of the novel. Travis Beacham doesn't mention it on his blog, and it never comes up in either Tales From Year Zero or Tales From The Drift, both written by him. Whether there just wasn't any occasion to mention it or whether this piece of worldbuilding fell by the wayside in Beacham's mind is currently impossible to determine.
Speaking of the drivesuits, let's talk about those more. The novelization includes a few paragraphs outlining how the pilots' drivesuits work. It's a two-layer deal:
The first layer, the circuity suit, was like a wetsuit threaded with a mesh of synaptic processors. The pattern of processor relays looked like circuitry on the outside of the suit, gleaming gold against its smooth black polymer material. These artificial synapses transmitted commands to the Jaeger’s motor systems as fast as the pilot’s brain could generate them, with lag times close to zero. The synaptic processor array also transmitted pain signals to the pilots when their Jaeger was damaged.
...
The second layer was a sealed polycarbonate shell with full life support and magnetic interfaces at spine, feet, and all major limb joints. It relayed neural signals both incoming and outgoing. This armored outer layer included a Drift recorder that automatically preserved sensory impressions.
...
The outer armored layer of the drivesuit also kept pilots locked into the Conn-Pod’s Pilot Motion Rig, a command platform with geared locks for the Rangers’ boots, cabled extensors that attached to each suit gauntlet, and a full-spectrum neural transference plate, called the feedback cradle, that locked from the Motion Rig to the spine of each Ranger’s suit. At the front of the motion rig stood a command console, but most of a Ranger’s commands were issued either by voice or through interaction with the holographic heads-up display projected into the space in front of the pilots’ faces. (Page 16.)
Now let's talk about the pons system. According to the novelization:
The basics of the Pons were simple. You needed an interface on each end, so neuro signals from the two brains could reach the central bridge. You needed a processor capable of organizing and merging the two sets of signals. You needed an output so the data generated by the Drift could be recorded, monitored, and analyzed. That was it. (Page 96.)
This is pretty consistent with other depictions of the drift, recording device aside. (Again, the 4D quantum recorder never comes up anywhere outside of the novel.)
The development of the pons system as we know it is depicted in Tales From Year Zero, which goes into further detail on what happened after Trespasser's attack on San Francisco. In this comic, a jaeger can be difficult to move if improbably calibrated. Stacker Pentecost testing out a single arm describes the experience as feeling like his hand is stuck in wet concrete; Doctor Caitlin Lightcap explains that it's resistance from the datastream because the interface isn't calibrated to Pentecost's neural profile. (I'm guessing that this is the kind of calibration the film refers to when Tendo Choi calls out Lady Danger's left and right hemispheres being calibrated.)
According to Travis Beacham's blog, solo piloting a jaeger for a short time is possible, though highly risky. While it won't cause lasting damage if the pilot survives the encounter, the neural overload that accumulates the longer a pilot goes on can be deadly. In this post he says:
It won't kill you right away. May take five minutes. May take twenty. No telling. But it gets more difficult the longer you try. And at some point it catches up with you. You won't last a whole fight start-to-finish. Stacker and Raleigh managed to get it done and unplug before hitting that wall.
In this post he says:
It starts off fine, but it's a steep curve from fine to dead. Most people can last five minutes. Far fewer can last thirty. Nobody can last a whole fight.
Next, let's talk about the size and weight of jaegers. Pacific Rim: Man, Machines, & Monsters lists off the sizes and weights of various jaegers. The heights of the jaegers it lists (which, to be clear, are not all of them) range from 224 feet to 280 feet. Their weights range from 1850 tons to 7890 tons. Worth noting, the heaviest jaegers (Romeo Blue and Horizon Brave) were among the Mark-1s, and it seems that these heavy builds didn't last long given that another Mark-1, Coyote Tango, weighed 2312 tons.
And on the topic of jaeger specs, each jaeger in Pacific Rim: Man, Machines, & Monsters is listed with a (fictional) power core and operating system. For example, Crimson Typhoon is powered by the Midnight Orb 9 power core, and runs on the Tri-Sun Plasma Gate OS.
Where the novelization's combat asset dossiers covers the same jaegers, this information lines up - with the exception of Lady Danger. PR:MMM says that Lady Danger's OS is Blue Spark 4.1; the novelization's dossier says it's BLPK 4.1.
PR:MMM also seems to have an incomplete list of the jaegers' armaments; for example, it lists the I-22 Plasmacaster under Weaponry, and "jet kick" under Power Moves. Meanwhile, the novelization presents its armaments thus:
I-22 Plasmacaster Twin Fist gripping claws, left arm only Enhanced balance systems and leg-integral Thrust Kickers Enhanced combat-strike armature on all limbs
The novel's dossiers list between 2-4 features in the jaegers' armaments sections.
Now let's move on to jaeger power cores. As many of you probably already know, Mark-1-3 jaegers were outfitted with nuclear power cores. However, this posed a risk of cancer for pilots, especially during the early days. To combat this, pilots were given the (fictional) anti-radiation drug, Metharocin. (We see Stacker Pentecost take Metharocin in the film.)
The Mark-4s and beyond were fitted with alternative fuel sources, although their exact nature isn't always clear. Striker Eureka's XIG supercell chamber implies some sort of giant cell batteries, but it's a little harder to guess what Crimson Typhoon's Midnight Orb 9 might be, aside from round.
Back on the topic of nuclear cores, though, the novelization contains a little paragraph about the inventor of Lady Danger's power core, which I found entertaining:
The old nuclear vortex turbine lifted away from the reactor housing. The reactor itself was a proprietary design, brainchild of an engineer who left Westinghouse when they wouldn’t let him use his lab to explore portable nuclear miniaturization tech. He’d landed with one of the contractors the PPDC brought in at its founding, and his small reactors powered many of the first three generations of Jaegers. (Page 182.)
Like... I have literally just met this character, and I love him. I want him to meet Newt Geiszler, you know? >:3
Apparently, escape pods were a new feature to Mark-3 jaegers. Text in the novelization says, "New to the Mark III is an automated escape-pod system capable of ejecting each Ranger individually." (Page 240.)
Finally, jaegers were always meant to be more than just machines. Their designs and movements were meant to convey personality and character. Pacific Rim: Man, Machines, & Monsters says:
Del Toro insisted the Jaegers be characters in and of themselves, not simply giant versions of their pilots. Del Toro told his designers, "It should be as painful for you to see a Jaeger get injured as it is for you to see the pilot [get hurt.]" (Page 56.)
Their weathered skins are inspired by combat-worn vehicles from the Iraq War and World War II battleships and bombers. They look believable and their design echoes human anatomy, but only to a point. "At the end of the day, what you want is for them to look cool," says Francisco Ruiz Velasco. "It's a summer movie, so you want to see some eye candy." Del Toro replies, "I, however, believe in 'eye protein,' which is high-end design with a high narrative content." (Page 57.)
THE JAEGER FROM DOWN UNDER is the only Mark 5, the most modern and best all-around athlete of the Jaegers. He's also the most brutal of the Jaeger force. Del Toro calls him "sort of brawler, like a bar fighter." (Page 64.)
And that is about all the info I could scrounge up and summarize in a post. I think there's a lot of interesting stuff here - like, I feel that the liquid circuit and muscle tissue stuff gives jaegers an eerily organic quality that could be played for some pretty interesting angles. And I also find it interesting that jaegers were meant to embody their own sort of character and personality, rather than just being simple combat machines or extensions of their pilots - it's a great example of a piece of media choosing thematic correctness over technical correctness, which when you get right down to it, is sort of what Pacific Rim is really all about.

MCD Little Details and Plot Points I Forgot pt. 2
Season one, around episode 84 to 94?
(basically my thoughts and notes about the series)
• Garroth says that he’s feels as though Laurance is like his brother and he was never able to experience this type of relationship with his own brothers (although he only mentions Zane so it makes me wonder if Jess hadn’t made Vylad his brother yet, or if talking about Vylad is too painful for Garroth.)
• Also, in my headcanon I feel like Garroth is developing feelings for Laurance and he tries to rationalize it as brotherhood. I feel like the monarchy that O’Kasis basically is, most likely prioritizes continuing the bloodline. Maybe this just started as a way of continuing Esmund’s legacy/power but as O’kasis became more powerful and corrupt it became more about creating dynasty that wouldn’t end. So gay relationships are probably frowned upon and personally I feel like at this point Garroth hadn’t considered being in relationship with a man and wasn’t fully aware it was an option. For me, I headcanon him as bisexual so possibly Garroth knew he was attracted to women and never thought more about his sexuality choosing to ignore any other feelings he had for anyone other than women.
• Anyway, Garroth then states that he hates seeing Laurance in pain from the Hayden’s death and feels like it might be worse than when he’s a shadow knight. Aphmau, of course, disagrees with this.
• Laurance struggling with his emotions while he thinks Hayden is dead shows the mental turmoil he’s experiencing as he balances his emotions as shadow knight.
• Aphmau inspects the crime scene so Laurance doesn’t have to see it. :((
• Laurance accidentally calls Aph “love” when he was exhausted. :((
• Laurance is able to sense when Aph is in danger? It happens twice the first time when they save Candenza and then when Aph is attacked by Aaron. It seems he just knows something is wrong and then just shows up.
Which is interesting considering that he and Aph seem to just have a connection since he became a shadow knight. Honestly, Laurance might’ve had some sort of untapped magicks before he was turned. Like when Laurance was stuck in the nether his image or consciousness was projected into the overworld and caused Levin to levitate/walk. That seems to be abnormal for when someone becomes a shadow knight. Maybe through coping with his transformation Laurance unknowingly manifested a bond/connection to Aphmau with whatever magical capacity he had.
Or, the bond was created simply because Aph is the person who Laurance must kill in order to become a fully fledged shadow knight. So Laurance then has a heightened sense of Aphmau’s status and location. Which, ironically, serves Laurance in being a better protector of Aph.
Ooor, even simpler, Laurance just has heightened senses in general and he’s always making sure Aph is alright using them and the Levin incident earlier in the season is irrelevant.
• Aphmau and Laurance have that hug moment in the woods outside of Phoenix Drop where he asks to always be by Aphmau’s side and earlier asks to keep Cadenza’s gift a secret.
• Aphmau chooses to keep both of these things a secret from Garroth, which he probably realizes he’s not being told everything that happened on the trip. Then Laurance wears a helmet for a couple days out of embarrassment. So, Garroth most likely thinks more happened between them than actually did. His jealousy probably started to grow more from this trip and he started feeling like he was being left out.
• Laurance asks Cadenza to watch over Garroth when they think he’s sick. :((((
• Laurance immediately steps up as head guard when everyone thinks Garroth is sick and makes sure everything is okay.
• Dante eats breakfast with Zoey and the kids and that’s the first time he’s been in her house. (I’m surprised how short of a time Dante has been in the series by the time we reach the end of season one, like as a kid I remember it being so much longer than it actually was.)
• Aaron second act as a character in the series is to threaten Aphmau and the village. (I’m so sorry to the Aaron stans out there but I can’t stand his ass and I can see the vision Jess was trying to go for but his character development was just everyone outside of him acting out of character).
Like I love a good “enemies to lovers” trope but Aaron pointing a sword to Aphmau’s throat wasn’t that. When something like that usually happens it’s like omg they have so much tension and they cross swords a couple times then they have dramatic banter that lets you feel that they’re is something more to their relationship than “enemies.”
Instead, we have Aaron knocking Aphmau over then pointing a sword to her throat. Then he threatens to kill her because he assumes without knowing her that she’s a selfish lord and only lets her live because she also hates Zane. But, he forces Aphmau to not tell anyone he’s there or else she’ll be putting her entire village in danger. HE IS QUITE LITERALLY CAMPED A SHORT WALK FROM APHMAU’S HOUSE WHERE SHE AND HER CHILDREN SLEEP EVERY NIGHT. That’s awful, man. Jess acts this out by constantly touching her throat so it’s kind of reasonable to assume that if they weren’t blocks the sword was probably directly pressed to Aphmau’s neck. Like I know, Aaron really isn’t that bad and he wasn’t talking about HIM hurting the village. He was actually talking about other people who after the pendent and this would put the village in danger. But, as the viewer and someone who’s seen the series before I have that knowledge as an outsider. While Aphmau in that scene only has the knowledge that if she’s says something wrong or lets other people know he’s here it will put everyone in danger.
Like Laurance comes up to Aph immediately after it happens because he felt she was in danger. He says she looks pale, distressed, and asks her if she’s been crying!!! Aphmau was terrified for her safety. That’s not a good beginning to a romance in my book! If the scene was framed differently where Aph had some autonomy in that scene like maybe she defends herself from Aaron then they begrudgingly come to agreement that he can stay that would be different. But instead he demands that Aph doesn’t tells anyone or else she’s in danger along with her loved ones. Anyway, I dislike this scene and Jess probably would have retconned it if she got to that point in Rebirth.
• Moving on! Laurance checks her temperature and makes sure she’s okay. He even tells her that he can carry her home if she’s too tired. Then he even takes the wood that she gathered and finishes the task for her so she can go home to her boys!
• Then, Malachi immediately blows up and Zoey cries because she feels like she’s a bad mom (even though she’s quite literally raising Aph’s kids for her but Zoey’s got trauma so I get it.) Aphmau reminds her that’s she apart of the family and isn’t upset with her. I love them so much!

CORLYS + LAENA
Following up from my other post where I compared Alyn & Laena, I wanted to delve a bit into the similarities Laena shares with her father. She's very much Corlys' mini-me too, in her own way.
ADVENTUROUS & DARING
Corlys Velaryon was a man apart, a man as brilliant as he was restless, as adventurous as he was ambitious. [...] At age sixteen, he became a captain himself, taking a fishing boat called the Cod Queen from Driftmark to Dragonstone and back. In the years that followed, his ships grew larger and swifter, his voyages longer and more dangerous.
— Fire & Blood, Heirs of the Dragon
A fiery young maiden, freshly flowered, Lady Laena had inherited the beauty of a true Targaryen from her mother, Rhaenys, and a bold, adventurous spirit from her father, the Sea Snake. As Lord Corlys loved to sail, Laena loved to fly, and had claimed for her own no less a mount than mighty Vhagar, the oldest and largest of the Targaryen dragons since the passing of the Black Dread in 94 AC.
— Fire & Blood, Heirs of the Dragon
MARRIAGE TO A RED DRAGON RIDING TARGARYEN WHOSE CLAIM TO THE IRON THRONE WAS PUSHED ASIDE
Rhaenys, at six-and-ten, was a fearless young beauty, and more than a match for her mariner. A dragonrider since the age of thirteen, she insisted upon arriving for the wedding on Meleys, the Red Queen, the magnificent scarlet she-dragon that had once borne her aunt Alyssa. “We can go back to the ends of the earth together,” she promised Ser Corlys.
— Fire & Blood, The Long Reign
Armed with Dark Sister, the prince made short work of his rival, and wed Lady Laena Velaryon a fortnight later. [...] Prudently, the prince and his new bride took themselves far from Westeros soon after the wedding, crossing the narrow sea on their dragons. Some said they flew to Valyria, in defiance of the curse that hung over that smoking wasteland, to search out the secrets of the dragonlords of the old Freehold.
— Fire & Blood, Heirs of the Dragon
BEFRIENDING SOMEONE WHO COULD HAVE BEEN A RIVAL
Reports had reached the court that Corlys Velaryon was massing ships and men on Driftmark to “defend the rights” of his son, Laenor, whilst Daemon Targaryen, a hot-tempered and quarrelsome young man of twenty, had gathered his own band of sworn swords in support of his brother, Viserys. A violent struggle for succession was likely no matter who the Old King named to succeed him.
— Fire & Blood, Heirs of the Dragon
In Daemon Targaryen he found a willing partner.
— Fire & Blood, Heirs of the Dragon
Though Princess Rhaenyra had been proclaimed her father’s successor, there were many in the realm, at court and beyond it, who still hoped that Viserys might father a male heir, for the Young King was not yet thirty. Grand Maester Runciter was the first to urge His Grace to remarry, even suggesting a suitable choice: the Lady Laena Velaryon.
— Fire & Blood, Heirs of the Dragon
Whilst Princess Rhaenyra misliked her stepmother, Queen Alicent, she became fond and more than fond of her good-sister Lady Laena.
— Fire & Blood, Heirs of the Dragon
MORE INTERESTED IN BOATS/DRAGONS THAN ROMANCE
Daella became seasick crossing Blackwater Bay, however, and on her return complained that “he likes his boats better than he likes me.” (She was not wrong in that.)
— Fire & Blood, The Long Reign
Only Lady Laena herself seemed untroubled. “Her ladyship shows far more interest in flying than in boys,” the maester at High Tide wrote to the Citadel.
— Fire & Blood, Heirs of the Dragon
DEATH UPON THE STEPS
For all these reasons, the realm suffered a terrible blow on the sixth day of the third moon of 132 AC, when Corlys Velaryon, Lord of the Tides, collapsed whilst ascending the serpentine steps in the Red Keep of King’s Landing. By the time Grand Maester Munkun came rushing to his aid, the Sea Snake was dead.
— Fire & Blood, Under the Regents
Sadly, Maester Gerardys came too late. After three days of delirium, Lady Laena passed from this mortal coil. She was but twenty-seven. During her final hour, it is said, Lady Laena rose from her bed, pushed away the septas praying over her, and made her way from her room, intent on reaching Vhagar that she might fly one last time before she died. Her strength failed her on the tower steps, however, and it was there she collapsed and died.

Spring’s been hard—things being born, things dying. The days are pregnant with funerals. I grieved, on an island surrounded by strangers who, over the course of a week, became people I’m in love with. I cried when the funicular doors closed on our week of paradise. I shed no tears at the service. It was like I was broken. I drank my guinness very quickly at the wake. Drunk, I found myself sat with the country’s oldest pub landlord, he’s 94. At his pub you pull your own pint and leave the change in a bowl. The toilet is in the flat upstairs. He put daffodils—my grandmother’s favourite—out when she died. In a countryside antiques shop, I (literally in this case) bump into the lead singer of The War on Drugs and we exchange small talk about the record and the importance of a cow bell. At night I dream I’m talking to H and Z and I wake up speaking gibberish. G tells us a story from a morgue which is unrepeatable on the internet but is incredibly moving. We drink the last bottle of wine my grandfather made in his cellar. It’s so strong, and so tannined, it brings a tear to my eye. He asked for a New York pastrami a few days before he died — oh, silly man, what year had your mind gone to, when you were living in Manhattan? You always hoped I would move to the city. With L, I walk up steep terrain towards the brook. We lie on the grass and the sun is on my face and it’s gorgeous. The train station cafe at the village is cash only but they also taped a bank transfer details sheet to the till. I buy an ice cream. They serve Bovril. I smile. There’s a sign which says “due to cutbacks, the light at the end of the tunnel has been switched off”. A group of us go to the queer club night and our sweaty beautiful bodies press against all the other sweaty beautiful bodies. Peaches comes on, we are all so perfect and safe. Love in the room, love in the room, love in the room. At the fish themed fancy dress party, I dress as an oyster adorned with a hundred sticky-back pearls. E says you're all gorgeous shoulders. I walk home at 4am. Our street is dark and quiet and beyond the outline of trees the sun is already coming up. J’s birthday approaches. Another funeral approaches. I wrap a handmade iron teapot imported from Kyoto. The solstice comes, what a relief to be in these long days where we can see each other in the light

The MCU Synergy Problem
Tumblr media
It’s been a month since X-Men ‘97 came out, and just about everyone’s has already pointed what makes it so good.
-Staying true to the spirit of the original while still striving for its own identity
-Staying true to the characterization and depiction of the characters, and in some cases, improving on their characterization such as in the case of Jean Grey and especially Morph.
-Introducing new concepts, elements and characters that haven’t been explored in other adaptations yet.
-Having so many callbacks to the original while not coming off as nostalgia pandering.
-The animation and action! MY GOD! The animation and action!
Really, the only problem people have with this show is the weird love triangle between Rogue, Gambit and Magneto.
We already had to deal with the infamous love triangle Cyclops, Jean and Wolverine in the original, we did not need this.
Not only is this just unnecessary, it’s also just weird since in the original, it was never even implied that Rogue or Magneto had any sort of history between each other at all.
But here, they met during Rogue’s days with the Brotherhood. And I think when they met, Rogue was still a teenager.
During that time, the two grew an attraction towards each other and although it’s not explicitly stated, it is implied that they did….ya know…
youtube
Man….
Although I do enjoy Magneto, unlike a lot of other people, I can acknowledge that he’s kind of an awful person.
He’s a supremacist, a terrorist, a mass murderer, a violent, abusive psychopath, and a deadbeat father (well, when he used to be a father but we’ll get to that soon).
But never though that “groomer” would be an addition to that list as well.
All I can say is that….if this show took place in the modern day, Magneto ain’t beating any allegations.
youtube
But besides all that, another major positive people have with this show is just how….comic booky it feels, which is something that’s been lacking with a lot of Marvel content for the better of a decade now.
But before we get into that, let’s take a little history lesson.
Marvel was founded all the way back in 1939 by Martin Goodman….but it wasn’t called Marvel at first, it was actually called Timely Comics. But by 1951, the name of the brand was changed to Atlas Comics.
Tumblr media
During this era, the comics saw the introduction of several characters include The Human Torch (the android), The Whizzer, Miss America, The Destroyer, the original Vision and The Angel.
But the two most notable characters introduced during this time were none other than the patriotic fighter of justice Captain America and the anti-heroic aquatic incel Namor the Sub-Mariner.
But Marvel would become the comic book powerhouse we know them as today starting in April of 1961, when Altas Comics was changed to be part of the newly-named Marvel Comics brand, helmed by the legendary duo of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby.
And over the course of the 1960s, Marvel would not only quickly become the biggest name in the comic industry (only being rivaled by who else, but DC), but also introduce many of their most recognizable stars.
This would include the likes of The Fantastic Four, The Incredible Hulk, Thor, Ant-Man and The Wasp, Iron Man, The X-Men, Daredevil, Doctor Strange, The Inhumans, Black Panther, The Silver Surfer, Black Widow and Hawkeye, and of course, the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.
And in addition to tons of, in the words of Yogurt…..
youtube
Marvel would also see plenty of entries into the wider world of television.
From the anthology series Marvel Super Heroes, to the acclaimed five-season run of The Incredible Hulk starring the legendary bodybuilder Lou Ferrigno, to the absolute meme-fest that was the 1967 Spider-Man cartoon.
But Marvel really found their footing amongst the public consensus in the 1990s, largely thanks to their animated shows.
We had X-Men ‘92, Spider-Man, Iron Man and Fantastic Four ‘94, and The Incredible Hulk ‘96.
What made these shows stand out from their predecessors was that they strived to actually be adaptations of their respective comics.
Yeah, prior to these shows, all of the cartoons were largely villain-of-the-week shows with little to no continuity and apart from the characters, didn’t really take a whole lot from their source material.
But these shows actually went out of their way to actually adapt storylines from the comics, had ongoing plots, and much stronger characterization than before.
And even besides that and of course, merchandising, Marvel was making quite the name for itself in the world of video games. Most notably the ones that were made by Capcom, which included the likes of The Punisher, X-Men: Children of the Atom, Marvel Super Heroes, X-Men: Mutant Apocalypse, and most famously of all, Marvel vs. Capcom.
Their status among the public consensus became even stronger when the 21st century rolled around.
This was largely thanks to the multiple films based on Marvel Comics properties that came out during the 2000s.
This included the likes of Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy, Ang Lee’s Hulk film, Tim Story’s Fantastic Four duology, Mark Steven Johnson’s Daredevil, and (Sirs whose names will not be mentioned here at all)’s X-Men series.
And apart from the merchandising (which was stronger than ever before thanks, the 2000s would also see some of the best video games based off the Marvel Comics and its IPs.
Marvel vs. Capcom 2: A New Age of Heroes, Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction, X-Men Legends and its sequel Rise of Apocalypse, Marvel Ultimate Alliance, and Spidey himself had a multiple of great games from this era.
From ones based off his cinematic outings, to ones based off his alternate universe escapades (Ultimate Spider-Man), to ones that featured the characters’ worst voice actor to date and was responsible giving us that famous depressed Spidey walking meme (Web of Shadows).
But everything would change for Marvel in 2008 with the release of….
youtube
This film would not only serve as the invincible armored Avenger’s first outing on the big screen, but would also be the start of one of the most well-known and influential pieces of media in Marvel’s entire history…..
The Marvel….Cinematic….Universe….
Just about everyone knows about the MCU.
It only not made the characters of Marvel even bigger than before (along with introducing some of the more lesser-known characters to the general public), but also helped popularized the concept of the shared cinematic universe in general.
The franchise has gone on to become one of, if not, the biggest and most successful film franchise in history and has left a major impact on the world of cinema and even Marvel themselves.
And unfortunately, not really for the better…..
Everyone has already pointed how much of a negative influence the MCU has had on the media we consume.
From the multiple failed attempts from studios who desperately wanted to trend chase by making their own cinematic universe, only for these attempts to end up being massive failures, to a lot of writing in many films post-Avengers having this quippy and observational sort-of-write that while beloved at first, has gone on to become seen as annoying and tiresome…..
But I really want to focus on the effect it’s had on Marvel as a whole.
To start this off, let’s look the place where this MCU effect has been the biggest problem…..and it’s ironically enough, the comics.
Ever since MCU began, Marvel has been adapting elements from the MCU into the comics, which became especially more apparent after the first Avengers film.
And while Marvel is no stranger to adapting elements from Marvel media outside the comics, it’s never been to this extent.
This synergy has seen major changes in the appearances and characterization in many of its characters, including…..
-Iron Man being portrayed as far more snarky and quippy than he previously was. At first, people were on board with this change, not only because people liked Robert Downey Jr’s portrayal, but also because during the mid-2000s, Iron Man was not a popular character. Not in the frankly overused and tired “nobody knew who Iron Man was prior to the release of the first film” way. But more in the sense that everyone hated him during that time. This was largely thanks to the absolute clusterfuck known as Civil War, which turned Iron Man into a full-on villain. Plus he was indirectly responsible for One More Day, aka the worst Spider-Man story ever written.
-Loki became far more heroic and started looking and acting more like his MCU counterpart. Hell, the Loki we know today isn’t the same one introduced back in the 1960s. That Loki died all the way back in 2010, and the one we know today is essentially his reincarnation. And this reincarnation was not only introduced in the exact same year that the first Thor movie released, but in the exact same month as well!
-Thor started acting far more goofy and air-headed like his MCU counterpart following Thor: Raganrok.
-Hawkeye started giving off what could be best described as “uwu small bean tired dad” in the Matt Fraction run, which started just 4 months after the first Avengers film.
-Agatha Harkness having her appearance changed into that of a much younger woman following Wandavision.
-Introducing the Ten Rings following Shang-Chi, and having the titular hero being the user of them instead of just being Bruce Lee like he had been for last 50 years.
-Literally everything involving the Guardians of the Galaxy.
Its also led to tons of the characters getting somewhat phased out like….
-Iron Fist, due to the poor reception of his MCU show and complaints towards him being a “white savior”.
-Hank Pym and Janet Van Dyne, aka the original Ant-Man and the Wasp, who were also two of the five founding members of the Avengers. But despite that, neither of them appeared in the first Avengers film. And although it was a loose adaptation of The Ultimates, Hank and Janet were still present in that story as founding members of the titular team. Hell, Hank definitely has this the worst as he was killed off back in 2015, and was only recently brought back from the dead…..and he’s an old man now. I wonder why?
-Valkyrie, who was not only killed off permanently after Thor Ragnarök, but replaced with not one, but two characters very similar to the Valkyrie that appears in Ragnarök.
-The Inhumans, who had a major push in relevancy in order to promote their upcoming movie and TV show. But after the former got cancelled and the latter ended up being a massive flop, they ended up being banished to the shadow realm and barely acknowledged anymore. Also, the reason for their push plays into a later point.
-Quicksilver, which also plays into that later point I just mentioned.
-Black Panther, who Marvel seems to be somewhat edging out in the comics literally because of Chadwick Boseman’s passing.
And worse of all, retcons……such as…..
-Quicksilver and The Scarlet Witch being revealed to have never been Magneto’s children nor mutants at all….shortly after the release of Age of Ultron.
-Shang Chi’s biracial heritage being rewritten to have him being fully Asian shortly after his film.
-Nebula, in addition to being made to look and act more like the movie version, also was revealed to be Thanos’ adopted daughter and Gamora’s sister….just like in the movies.
-Ms. Marvel being revealed to have been mutant all along instead of an Inhuman…..just months before the release of The Marvels.
-Thor and the other Asgardians are not mythical beings, but actually aliens who were mistaken for gods by humanity….who just so happen to use magic (yeah this is a weird one because it constantly keeps flip-flopping between one or the other).
-Nick Fury being revealed to have had an illegitimate son who looks exactly like the MCU Nick Fury, who himself was based on the Ultimate Universe version of Nick Fury, who was African-American and modeled after Samuel L. Jackson. This is really weird because if they wanted a Samuel L. Jackson inspired Nick Fury, they could’ve easily just waited for the 2015 Secret Wars event and just had the Ultimate Nick Fury be one of the surviving inhabitants of the Ultimate Universe to be brought over to the 616 Universe along with Miles Morales, The Maker, and that son of Wolverine everyone forgot the existence of (even Marvel themselves!).
So yeah, as you can see, this is quite a problem.
Marvel has essentially been trying to make the comics resemble the movies rather than the other way around.
Which has not only gotten annoying and tiresome, but it’s also pretty disingenuous.
I mean, you’re pulling from a source material that has literal decades of content and lore to use, and now you’re actively trying change and contradict that lore just because of a series of movies adapting said source material?
This is obviously because they’re trying to appeal to new Marvel readers who came right from the movies.
But for some reason, Marvel seems to believe that general audiences have never heard the word “adaptation” before.
But this isn’t just an issue for the comics, it’s also an issue for…..pretty much every medium Marvel can be represented in.
For over a decade, Marvel has been essentially trying to push the MCU as the default everything.
Anything Marvel related: it all has to be similar to the MCU and barely anything else. And if it can, just utilize any of the comics written post 2010.
It’s pretty much the same problem that a lot of recent Spider-Man media suffers from.
When they’re adapting stuff, it’s almost always from the cartoons, Brian Michael Bendis’ Ultimate Spider-Man and Dan Slott’s run on Amazing Spider-Man.
And this has often come to the detriment of many of the non-MCU projects released during the 2010s.
Three of the best examples of this I could think of were Avengers Assemble, Square Enix’s Avengers, and Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Avengers Assemble is famous for being the Marvel cartoon that was only created just to ride on the success of the first Avengers film.
But in spite of this, it was apparent during the first two season that this show was striving to have its own identity. Specifically utilizing some of the lesser-known faces of Marvel.
But as the series went on, the MCU got bigger and bigger. And as a result, the show started to get bogged down by MCU synergy.
From having storylines that were obviously done to tie into whatever movie came out not that long ago, to even changing characters appearances in order to better reflect their MCU counterparts.
The best example of the latter was with Falcon, who was a member of the main cast.
During the first three seasons, he actually stood out from the rest of the team visually as his outfit wasn’t trying to emulate the MCU.
It wasn’t emulating the comics either because I think that outfit of his was wholly original to this show.
But during season 4, Falcon ends up going through a time warp. And when he comes out, he’s been aged up from a young college-aged man to a grown man around the Avengers’ ambiguous age range and is wearing an outfit similar to his MCU counterpart.
Now we come to Square Enix’s Avengers.
My God…..was there anything this game did remotely right?
Or at least competently?
And one of the many flaws of this game was its roster.
And this actually plays into another major point on how stifling MCU synergy is.
Ever since the first Avengers movie, whenever the titular Avengers appear in just about anything, they’re almost always shown having the same roster.
That being Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye.
Sometimes there will be other members like Falcon, Ant-Man, Wasp, Black Panther, Vision and Captain Marvel, but that’s because those guys are also major names in the MCU as well.
Like for God’s sake, switch it up a bit!
For the next major thing the Avengers appear in, how about we have a roster based on like…..
The Heroes Return roster, or the Hickman roster, or the Englehart roster, or the New Avengers roster, or the Stern roster, or the West Coast roster, or even the Classic roster!
But back to the Avengers game, they didn’t even commit to that never-changing roster I just mentioned!
When the game released, the Avengers video game had Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Hulk and Black Widow as the main Avengers roster until Ms. Marvel joined up.
Yeah, Hawkeye didn’t appear as a part of the roster until his own DLC with Kate Bishop!
As for the other additions to the roster, we had Spider-Man, Black Panther, The Winter Soldier and the Jane Foster Thor.
youtube
Yeah, when looking at this game as an adaptation of the comics (which it barely was), the roster is absolutely pathetic when you look at the INSANE amount of members the Avengers have had over the decades.
And when looking at this game as an adaptation of the MCU, it didn’t even commit to that!
This is even more of the case when you look at the list of characters they initially had planned, but they obviously had to drastically cut all that for the sake of time constraints.
Hell, if you want to see something really sad, just look at the villain roster.
Over the 3 years this game was around, it only gave us 4 (yes 4) villains.
M.O.D.O.K., Taskmaster, The Abomination and Klaw….
Yep! Just these four schmucks!
No Red Skull, no Mandarin, no Baron Zemo, no Leader, no Ultron, no Kang the Conqueror, no Absorbing Man, no Wrecking Crew, no Enchantress, no Whirlwind, no Crimson Dynamo, no Circus of Crime….
Hell, they don’t even have Loki, the most popular and well-known Avengers villain!
It’s even more sadder when you consider the DLCs, i.e Spider-Man, who despite having undoubtedly the most well-known rogues gallery in all of Marvel, not one of them appear at all in his DLC!
youtube
In the wise words of a young redheaded YouTuber who likes to talk about Spidey….
“How easily you got showed up by Fortnite!”
If you want more detail on the history of this game and what went wrong, I suggest watching Matt McMuscles’ What Happened video on the game, but basically the reason that the game was the way that it was due to the laziness and apathy of Square Enix, the inexperience and slight incompetence of Crystal Dynamics, having WAY too many cooks in the kitchen (i.e., they worked with five studios, all of which were located in different parts of the world), and most of all, the utter greed of Marvel.
And funnily enough, this game ties into my next talking point…
Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite! The fourth and possibly final game in the series….and is regarded by just about everyone to be the weakest game as well.
Just like Avengers, one of (if not) the biggest criticisms of this game was the roster.
Infinite had a roster of about 36 characters, having the second smallest roster in the series’ history, only surpassing Clash of Heroes’ 15.
This was quite the surprise when compared to the previous game, 3’s 48 characters and especially 2: A New Age’s 56.
As for the roster itself, it was made up of both veteran characters and new characters.
Returning from the previous game, we had Spider-Man, Captain America, Hulk, Iron Man, Thor, Doctor Strange, Dormammu, Ghost Rider, Nova and Rocket Raccoon.
Also returning were two faces that hadn’t been seen since 2: Venom and Thanos.
As for the new characters, we had Captain Marvel, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Black Panther, Gamora and Ultron.
Yeah not exactly the most interesting roster.
And I’m sure many of you noticed by now, there’s something notable characters missing from the roster.
Namely the X-Men, their villains and Doctor Doom, all of whom have been staples of the franchise since the beginning.
And there’s a reason for that….
A very, scummy reason….
I already mentioned this in my X-Men: The Next Mutation post, but it does bare repeating her.
As the MCU became more popular, Marvel became focusing on pushing the Avengers as their premiere superhero team, with the Fantastic Four and X-Men essentially being dethroned.
Along with that, their relevance in the comics notably began to degraded, and barely began making appearances in media outside the comics.
The reason for this, apart from Marvel focusing on cashing in on the Avengers, was because despite still owning the overall rights for the FF and X-Men (which, why wouldn’t they?), their film rights were still owned by 20th Century Fox.
Since Fox was pretty much a rival company to Marvel until Disney bought them out, Marvel basically saw any form of FF and X-Men representation as free-marketing for Fox.
So they decided to essentially not to allow any FF or X-Men related characters to appear in any media outside the comics and even reduced their overall presence as well.
Which is why Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch and the other non X-Men mutants were retconned into not being mutants, why Quicksilver himself has been sort of been an afterthought in recent years, why the Inhumans were pushed so hard, and why the FF and X-Men characters weren’t in this game.
Plus the justifications and excuses for this from the developers are absolutely hilarious, because you can just tell that they’re lying through their teeth while being held up at gunpoint by a bunch of Marvel executives.
Oh yeah, let’s bring up the other biggest elephant in the room and want led to Square Enix developing Avengers.
After Infinite came out and got quickly abandoned by the player-base, many people at Capcom have come out to reveal just how awful it was working with Marvel and Disney.
They weren’t just pushy with who and who couldn’t be in the roster.
They were also pushy about how the characters that would be in the roster would be portrayed (specifically wanting them to heavily resemble their MCU iterations) and even changing their themes to be exactly like the MCU ones.
Hell, this pushiness was so bad that for the trailers, they did not want the Marvel characters to be depicted as losing!
This was also an issue back during 3 as well, but it was essentially amplified during this game.
This really shows just how petty Marvel really is….
They’re willing to ignore and downplay the existence of two major players of their brand that people have loved for decades and were created by the two men them helped make the company they are today.
They’re unwilling to compromise and it has to be their way or the highway.
And this pettiness eventually came to bite them in the ass as Capcom’s statements about working with them eventually reached many of the other big video game developers.
And soon enough, when Marvel was trying to find someone to develop Avengers, none of the big game developers wanted anything to do with it!
Eventually, they did find a developer with Square Enix, who already had experience working with Disney via Kingdom Hearts.
It’s actually ironically hilarious that the heads at Marvel believed all three of these projects would actually be successful because of the MCU synergy, but they all ended up being flops because of said MCU synergy!
But this desire for MCU synergy has not only negatively affected non-MCU project of this time, but even ones that either came out before this desire or….never came out at all.
I’m sure many of you remember The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.
Tumblr media
This show was essentially a love letter to the Silver Age comics of Marvel  and strived to be an near-faithful adaptation of many classic and even recent Avengers storylines, while also having its own unique spin on it.
Hell, in some cases, the EMH versions of these storylines are actually better than the originals, especially in the case of Secret Invasion.
Sadly, the show got cancelled in 2012 after 2 seasons and 52 episodes…and to this day, EMH probably has one of the dumbest and scummiest reasons for cancellation in television animation history.
The reason this show was cancelled because Marvel wanted to replace with it a show that was more in-line with the MCU, aka Avengers Assemble.
Yep! Not low ratings. Not bad critical reception. Not budgetary reasons. Hell, not even bad toy sales, which was a major reason for a lot of action cartoons around this time getting the axe!
And it doesn’t get much better from here.
During the 2010s, there were a lot of promising Marvel projects that never saw the light of the day, with two of the most notable being the animated Deadpool series and Marvel Era.
youtube
Following the success of 2016 film, FX and Marvel Television decided to collaborate to created an animated series based on the merc with the mouth, with Donald Glover (yes, that Donald Glover) being one of the main showrunners, alongside his brother Stephen.
However, the series was cancelled almost a year within its development, with the main reason being that Marvel wasn't particularly big on the vision that the Glovers had for this series.
And apart Donald speculating racism on Marvel’s part (which given that Jeph Loeb was meant to be an executive producer on this series, that possibly could be the case), another possible factor for the show’s cancellation was because of Deadpool’s connection with the X-Men, and during this show’s production, Marvel was still in their “the X-Men don’t matter anymore” phase.
And it really sucks because the pitch animation for this was really good and made this seem like it was going to be a very fun show.
New we come to Marvel Era.
youtube
Out of all the cancelled projects, this was perhaps the most interesting.
Marking a first for their animated shows, this would’ve been an anthology series released in 2014 to commemorate the 75th anniversary of Marvel Comics.
It was going to be produced by Powerhouse Animation (best known for Netflix’s Castlevania series) and it was gonna have 7 stories, with each one being themed around a different decade and focusing on a different character.
There would’ve been a 40s story focusing on Captain America, a 50s story focusing on either Wolverine or Namor the Sub-Mariner, a 60s story focusing on the X-Men, a 70s story focusing on The Heroes for Hire, a 80s story focusing on The Punisher, a 90s story focusing on the aforementioned Deadpool, and a 2000s story focusing on Captain Marvel.
This honestly seemed like it was going to be a really great show, which was enhanced by the absolutely gorgeous animation of the pitch trailer.
Unfortunately, Powerhouse announced that the project was cancelled because it wasn’t what Marvel Television were focusing on.
Which is code for: Marvel didn’t want it because it wasn’t MCU adjacent….
To wrap this up, I just wanted to bring up the reason I made this in the first place.
Over the last few weeks, there was a leak for a upcoming episode of X-Men ‘97, which showed a shot of Captain America’s shield.
And this led many people to somewhat groan, believing that this was yet another case of MCU synergy.
And although this was proven to be false, it really does speak volume with how much influence the MCU has had.
Although it has brought lot of Marvel’s star characters into the mainstream, the MCU has shaped and changed them so much, that it seems like they can no longer exist as characters who have existed for literal DECADES.
They always have to be associated with a film franchise that has existed for about 1/6 of their existence in fiction.
But I think the biggest takeaway to all this is that this constant MCU synergy kinda shows a lack of reverence for Marvel’s legacy.
Look at this merchandising from the 2010s and 2020s....
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In most of this merchandise, the character roster featured is almost always the same.
The Avengers, Doctor Strange, Spider-Man and the Web Warriors, and the Guardians of the Galaxy.
The Inhumans were also apart of this roster until, as I mentioned earlier, got banished to the Shadow Realm....
Occasionally you'll get some of the other cosmic characters like Nova, She-Hulk and some of the street-level heroes like Daredevil, Elektra, Ghost Rider, and The Heroes for Hire.
But those are few and far between.
But other than that, it's largely the four I mentioned earlier.
Because they're the main faces of the MCU, and as we all know, everything has to be related to the MCU in some way....
But now let's compare that to some Marvel merchandising from the mid-to-late 2000s and early 2010s....
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Upon seeing this, you can tell that there’s a far greater sense of appreciation for Marvel.
This merchandising pulls from nearly every corner of the Marvel Universe you can think off and features characters from the heavy hitters, to the borderline obscure.
Plus it still heavily features the Fantastic Four and X-Men characters, who, may I remind you, spent a good chunk of the 2010s having their presence greatly reduced and their existence constantly threatened or denied because of movie rights!
All in all, Marvel really needs to stop the MCU synergy.
In spite of what they think, it’s clearly done nothing but harm and stifle many potentially good (even great) projects.
Not only that, but it’s also gonna start harming the Marvel brand itself with how homogenized they’ve made everything and the rapidly increasing lack of interest in the MCU.
Plus its also brought out the worst in Marvel.
From cancelling projects for stupid reasons, to showing a lack of respect for the legacy they’ve build, to literally being difficult to work with because of how they want everything to be their way.
But things do seem to be looking up a bit….
There’s been the multiple of Spider-Man media of the last few years , which has been one of the few Marvel projects that aren’t bogged down by MCU synergy.
Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur also ended being shockingly really good, and although it does have some MCU synergy, it’s pretty minor.
And now we have X-Men ‘97.
It does appear that there’s some kind of movement in Marvel to actually start making projects again that aren’t being made to be a glorified MCU circle-jerks.
And hopefully, this could led to some really unique and interesting projects, specifically for this year.
Since remember, this year marks the 85th anniversary of Marvel Comics, so that’s pretty big!
But then again, their corporate overlord had an utter embarrassment of a year for their centennial….
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And Marvel themselves also contributed to that as well….

Breaking down the comics: A New Past (Vol 3, Issue 1-3)
Marc Spector: Moon Knight Vol 3
Tumblr media
So this follows right after the OG run. We left behind Moench and Zelenetz.
Now we run into a new group of writers and artists.
Writers:
Chuck Dixon, Mike Baron, Howard Mackie, J.M. DeMatteis, Al Milgrom, and Bruce Jones
Artists:
Sal Velluto, Bill Reinhold, Russ Heath, Mark Bagley, Ron Garney, J.J. Birch, and Denys Cowan.
A whole group of names that aren't that common place. Which is a pity because they did an alright job!
When you look at the Omnibus, you also get a content warning!
"This content contains Depictions of racism, sexual assault and suicide. Reader discretion is advised. If you are struggling with thoughts of suicide, or are worried about a friend or loved one, please reach out to a counselor or someone you trust or Dial 988 for the suicide and crisis lifeline."
A bit of history: The crisis line was created in January 2005.
Since the first Marc Spector story came out in June 1989, it's safe to say this is a late Marvel addition. Hidden in moderate font on the credits page. This Omnibus book was published in 2023. A lot of new books that contain old content contain these new warnings.
I highly respect the Marvel publishers for the singular reason that when they re-released older content, they recognized the problems in them and rather than correct, censor, or hide them, they kept it as a piece of history and slapped a content warning on there.
ANOTHER interesting fact, when looking at the Omnibus, you get to see the dates. This series of Moon Knight ran from June 1989 through 1994.
It was ongoing and takes place after the West Coast Avengers, which technically took place directly after Zelenetz left, but I'm going to skip over that for now.
Tumblr media
I doubt very much I will really cover West Coast Avengers (1987-1989, starting with issue #21 and ending with Issue #41). I might touch on it a bit later, but I was never really a fan. Plus he mostly just kinda pops in silently in the background with most of them.
Now, this was an interesting time in the comics. The early 90s saw things take a drastic turn towards EXTREME. The 90s were a new target audience, a new decade, and the world was changing.
The cold war came to an end at the end of 1991, but the Gulf War started in 1990.
Comics were suddenly competing with and trying to get a foot in on Television, which was suddenly a household thing and latch-key kids wanted something to hold their attention.
Now, the Marc Spector series has recently been released in Omnibus volumes. Vol 1 holds issues 1-34 with excerpts from Amazing Spider-Man #353-358 and specials including 'Divided We Fall'
Terry Kavanagh kicks off with Omnibus Vol 2 and that name should start to look more familiar. He worked on Spider-Man for a long time and X-men along with Avengers, Iron Man, and a lot of big crossovers.
Vol 2 holds Issues 25-60, a Moon Knight special, more Spider-Man crossover "Web of Spider-Man #93-94, and some Moon Knight from 1998-1999!  (The Omnibus comes out this March 5th, 2024 if you're a collector!) Since it's not out yet, I'm going to be starting with Vol 1 for now.
What's interesting is that the series 'Marc Spector' ends with Marc's 'death'.
So what happens to Moon Knight after that? The king himself, Moench returns to resurrect Marc Spector for a second time in a 4 issue special.
In fact, Moench returns for the whole Moon Knight Vol 4 and 5 (1998-1999) mini series, each one 4 issues long.
Things had to be fixed after how it all ended, after all.
I'll cover the Moench specials later.
I’ll be honest. I’ve been putting off the 90s runs. The 90s were not exactly my cup of tea when it came to Marvel comics. I was more of a Batman fan (with a few notable exceptions). But as I’ve mentioned many times… My memory is pretty shit so maybe I’ll get into it and be happily surprised and enjoy myself more than I think I will.
 So let’s get into it!
Let's start with Issue #1!
Marc Spector: Moon Knight. Issue #1: New Moon.
Written by Charles Dixon
Art by Sal Velluto
We open on Long Island. We see someone doing a 3am diaper run and stopping at an ATM first.
Two thugs sit in a car on the corner waiting. They spot the poor sleepy dad and decide he'd make a nice cash grab.
They hold him up at gun point and demand he take out the max.
Well... One holds him at gun point. The other rips the door off the man's car for some reason.
Hey look, It's our man!
Now, remember, Moon Knight has been out of New York for a while with the West Coast Avengers. We're picking up here right after he left them.
Moon Knight casts his shadow on the villains.
"You boys forget your bank cards?"
"It's a ghost!"
"I've been away too long. You guys don't even recognize me."
"It ain't no ghost, Rocket scientist. But he's gonna be one."
Title card: NEW MOON. Beginning a new series chronicling the adventures of Marc Spector.
Tumblr media
You know, the art here really brings to mind early Sienkiewicz Moon Knight. The dramatic leap that leaves his ass out. The awkward stances, the action kicks, the clenched fists... Maybe the poses are a LITTLE more awkward than Bill gave Marc credit for, but I'm loving the clean lines and shading.
Plus, Do I spy a crescent dart upgrade!?
Tumblr media
Marc quips “After all of the high-powered weirdos I fought with the West Coast Avengers… It's good to be back on home turf kicking the rear ends of a few AVERAGE lowlifes!"
Marc has always loved beating on common thugs. He so often fights supernatural brutal muscle bound villains. When he gets a casual robbery, he’s almost giddy.
Notice I’m saying Marc here a lot.
When Moon Knight joined the Avengers on the West Coast, we did not see any sign of Jake or Steven. We know from the OG run that Jake doesn’t leave New York. And I suspect that Steven has never played well with the Avengers or team ups of that sort.
Perhaps we had Moon Knight as himself, but it’s clear from the title of this series that we’re going to be getting Marc Spector himself and the writers that will be working on this are most likely not comfortable working with Friendly and Loving Jake and Generous and glitzy Steven. Of course the wild and extreme early 90s is going to focus on Marc. And thus we start down the LONG and drawn out Moon Knight tradition of forgetting that he has DID with other Alters and not just Schizophrenia with a ‘pretend’ identity crisis.
But I’m going to take this down a different path and we’re going to look at this as Marc falling into the trap of his usual denial and trying to get his life together by holding front so hard that you’d have to literally pry it out of his cold dead fingers (ha ha, we’ll get to that later).
Anyways, back to the comic. The thugs are subdued and the poor sleepy dad man thanks him "You're Moonbeam, aren't you?"
"Moon KNIGHT, pal. I have been out of New York too long."
Marc ties up the thugs and tells the guy to wait there for the cups. He radioed ahead to them before he dropped in.
The chopper arrives and Marc gets on the ladder and takes off with the most awkward:
"There they are now. Take it easy, Citizen." and he salutes.
Yeah.... It's Marc. Without a doubt... No one could be that awkward but Marc...
On the chopper, Frenchie has also taken note of the moment.
"'Take it easy, Citizen?'"
"Aw, lighten up, Frenchie."
Marc takes off the mask and relaxes back next to Frenchie in a really weirdly designed chopper that looks more like a hover car than anything... But sure. Upgrades!
"Y'know, Frenchie... I think the guy I saved down there was more afraid of me than those hoods."
"Is that not the reason for the costume?"
"Sure. But I don't want the innocent to fear me."
"The innocent will fear you most of all."
"I should have shaved. This mask chafes my face something awful."
Marc...
It is very nice to see them actually talking, though. You never got to see Marc and Frenchie actually be the friends they were supposed to be. And Marc is never more relaxed than when he's with Frenchie and they can talk about the past without worry.
"Crime fighting doesn't seem to suit you these days, frenchie."
"It is a waste of our talents, Marc. We could have easily strafed those dogs out of existence."
"We're not mercenaries anymore. We can't just make things up as we go along. We've got rules in this country, m'man."
"Then I do not like the rules."
"Live it or live with it, Frenchie."
Now this is interesting because this is the first time that we really get a feel for what Frenchie thinks of all of this superhero business.
We know Frenchie was a Legionnaire, we know he was a very GOOD mercenary that helped recruit Marc in the first place, and that his talents are with vehicles.
We also know that Frenchie had strong opinions on the work he took (as seen in the very first issue when he came to Marc to complain about Bushman's sketchy business).
But Frenchie ALSO was very attached to Marc and followed him without question.
So here we have Frenchie noting that picking on thugs is far below what they are both capable of.
Just an interesting tidbit.
Another interesting tidbit is that we see the Mooncopter landing back at Grand Mansion and Marc notes that he was able to buy it back after returning from West Coast Avengers.
"At TWICE the amount you sold it for, Marc."
"You're on my case tonight, Frenchie."
We get a little map of where the mansion is on Long Island and that the current Market Value is $5,890,000. Which.... In today's currency is: $14,649,807.50 today!!!!!!
Here’s a pretty cool design of the mansion with fun facts!
Tumblr media
Now what's interesting is that we see Marc returning to an empty mansion. Just him and Frenchie. No Marlene. No Samules the Butler or Nedda the cook.
The phone rings from an unlisted number and when he answers, no one says anything.
Angrily, he hangs up and we get a view of a woman on the other line saying "He's home. We got the right number."
This explains why we are getting blueprints of the moonchopper and the mansion and map of Long Island. Someone's looking for Marc.
Marc does Marc things and wanders the mansion a bit and starts talking to the Khonshu statue.
It's time for the Marc Spector Recap of how he became Moon Knight! (remember, this is issue #1 so it's a good place for new readers to pick up a new comic. You'll often find recaps and deep character introductions in 1st issues.)
"Past four in the morning and all the sane people are in bed. It's all YOUR fault, Khonshu. You got me into this. God of the moon, taker of vengeance.
Actually I got me into this when I hooked up with that crazy Bushman back in my mercenary days. Now THERE was a prime psycho.
Killing is a part of any war, but Bushman got off on it. I tagged along until he killed Dr. Peter Alraune, an American archaeologist, and it looked like his daughter was next.
I helped Marlene escape and then challenged Bushman in hand to hand combat. Not one of my brighter ideas.
He left me for dead and he was just about right! Somehow I managed to make it to the digs that the doctor was trying to protect... The Shrine of Khonshu.
Marlene tells me I 'Died' there and was revived by the spirit of Khonshu.
I wrapped myself in Khonshu's shroud and, from that night on, I took on the mantle of Moon Knight."
Oh Marc... You would tell it like that.
Marc heads up stairs to bed (tossing his cape on the stairs as he goes) and when he enters his room someone jumps at him.
Marc fends them off, elbowing them and then flipping them onto the bed.
Oh hey! It's Marlene!
And she's already half undressed. Welcome to the 90s!
"You play a little rough, cowboy. I think you broke one of my nails."
"What did you expect sneaking in here like that?"
"Well, there was no one home. I thought I'd surprise you."
"Mission accomplished, Baby."
"Not so easy the way you have this place wired. But my sneaking skills needed a workout anyway, so...I thought I'd come see you. It's been so long, and I thought I'd take a chance..."
And the two goof off a bit then we have implied hanky-panky as the scene cuts away.
I have well known mixed feelings about Marlene. And with Marc now running the show, it's interesting that she'd come back, considering her feelings on Marc vs. Steven. More interesting that he left her behind.
We cut to Manhattan and find two guys in Hawaiian shirts at a large computer terminal (gotta love those 1980s thick monitors). They're celebrating because:
"We got this Moon Knight guy blued, stewed and tattooed! We know more about him than he knows about himself, Tector!
Yuh done good, little brother. You worked some real magic with that keyboard. Our bossman is gonna be so proud."
And the boss steps in, asking if they have found him yet.
"Tector's digging up more data on his home security system. So far it looks like a hummer! Bet the Kremlin in Russia ain't got so fine a wire job, boss."
And we pan out to find the boss:
Tumblr media
Alright, he’s upped his style and given himself a new title. I appreciate the new look. They kept it authentic to the original Bushman and also added in their own artistic style and I dig it. Not sure about the new outfit, but who am I to tell our delusional bad guy how to dress?
"I want projections on the best way to approach Moon Knight. I want his weaknesses exposed to me. This information is vital to my nation's security, Lyle. You will have it by morning."
Good to see he's still absolutely obsessed with Marc.
And that since we are starting Marc Spector Issue 1, we are going back to the original with Marc's own personal villain, Bushman.
I have a lot to say about Bushman, and I'll save it for the end. So stick around!
Back at Spector Mansion...
It actually says "Spector Mansion."
Another interesting detail because the OG ALWAYS called it Grant Mansion.
Marlene wakes up to find Marc working out in his gym.
"You know, Marc, I'm kind of surprised you're still doing the Moon Knight thing."
"You have a problem with that, Marlene?"
"Why do you do it?"
"I want to do like that dog says on TV. 'Take a bite out of crime'."
(Scruff McGruff. You were a weird part of my childhood).
They argue about letting the police do the work and Marc argues that the police can't be everywhere and do everything.
Tumblr media
(That style though.)
"You used to fight a more noble battle."
"I was a Mercenary, for cryin' out loud."
"Don't play the cynic with me. You weren't in it for the cash. If you were you wouldn't have pitched in on the losing side so often."
"I LIKE long odds."
"You're impossible!"
"And YOU are getting more like Frenchie. I get the feeling I'm outnumbered around here."
This is an interesting conversation we keep getting here from both Marlene and Frenchie. That they think he was better as a Mercenary but he argues that his Mercenary work was not good for him.
Marc says he's starving but that he gave the cook the week off.
Marlene asks how Nedda is.
"Oh, I retired her to my condo in Boca Raton. I never go there anyway. Chloe's the new cook."
"What's she like?"
"Not terribly attractive. She's older than Moses and has a mustache that Frenchie's jealous of."
"Marc, you're terrible."
And then Chloe walks in unexpectedly.
Tumblr media
(Alright. It’s going to be like that. Welcome to the 90s.)
Tumblr media
Yep.
Down in the chopper area, we find Marc now working on the chopper for once.
Come to think of it, in the OG, it was ALWAYS Frenchie up working on the chopper. But then again, it was always Steven at the mansion. Now that Marc is out and about, he's the one tinkering about.
"YOu're working down here late, Marc. Didn't I see Marlene earlier?"
"Sure did, Frenchie. We have resumed our stormy relationship. She got an eyeful of Chloe and I sent her packing off to the mall with my goldcard to smooth things over."
"Americans... You fight with your women because you don't know how to love them."
Ah, Frenchie...
They are interrupted by a frantic call on the radio from Marlene. She's driving on the highway and she's "Under attack"!
Tumblr media
I am pleased that the writers remembered that Marlene knows how to handle herself. She was trained by Marc, after all. She can shoot, fight, and drive. She’s no damsel in distress.
Marc shows up and finds the car empty. He attacks the remaining gun-men and demands to know where Marlene is.
"Spector, are you STILL parading about in that ridiculous costume?"
"You're one to talk about taste in clothes, Bushman."
"Amusing, Spector, you always were a glub one."
Bushman holds Marlene at knife point (Speaking of damsel in distress) and demands that Marc meet up with him later tonight to find out what his demands are.
He then shoots one of his own men just to prove the point that he's still a vicious cold blooded killer, then he drives off in a classy car with Marlene.
Marc is...less than happy about this.
"You're a dead man, Bushman. You just don't know it yet."
TO BE CONTINUED.
I’m not going to make you wait. Here you go!
Marc Spector, Moon Knight: Issue #2: Hunter’s Moon.
Written by: Charles Dixon
Art by: Sal Velluto
Tumblr media
Alright, Apparently Spider-Man is going to be in this one. This is going to be interesting.
We open back up in Manhattan.
We got three nerdy looking guys on a roof across from the Excelsior (Fancy hotel) with a telescope spying on the guests.
While fighting over the 'scope, they happen to catch a glimpse of 'a ghost'.
Yeah, he's being real sneaky there.
Tumblr media
So there he is... at the Embassy of the Republic of Burunda. This is Bushman's new country that he has made himself 'President' of.
Marc notes the place looks pretty well armored and guarded. He has Frenchie up in the sky as usual.
"I'm WAY behind on my current events. I didn't know that Bushman had set himself up as the strongman in Burunda."
"I saw it on sixty minutes. Forgot to tell you."
Frenchie suggests waiting for Bushman to call and tell him what he wants, since they aren't even sure if Bushman has Marlene in the embassy.
Marc says Bushman enjoys always having the edge, including diplomatic immunity. There's no way he's going to wait.
Hey look, the tech brothers from before are back!
They have caught sight of Moon Knight on their CCTV cams.
Bushman decides to send Marc a message.
"Spector must be discouraged from coming near the embassy again. He must meet my demands without question. Is that CLear, Mister Glitch?"
While Marc tries to track someone leaving the Embassy, Bushman sends his personal bodyguards after him.
HEY. Remember the warning at the top of this collected run? The one about racism and other things?
Tumblr media
He puts up a fight, telling Frenchie to stay on the guy leaving the embassy.
Marc puts up a fight and jumps around building to building until he gets ahead.
Spider-man happens to be swinging by and notices Marc's group.
"Now there's something you don't see everyday... A bunch of guys dressed like Tarzan extras running into central park after midnight."
Spider-man follows and good ol' Peter Parker takes out the camera to catch some shots of Moon Knight in action.
"They seem to be after the one in the cape. Might as well take some pictures to sell to the paper. This guy sure doesn't need MY help. Say "Cheese" everybody."
Marc takes out the last of the group and continues his chase.
"Moon Knight, huh? I thought he was in California. Well, off to the darkroom. And thanks for the help with the rent, Moonie!"
And Spider-man heads out.
(I've talked about 'special guest appearances' in comics before. It's a big show to get people to buy and read the comic and try to convince new fans to come in. You're lucky if they are in the comic for half a page.)
Marc is back on the tail of the guy and he meets up with him.
He tells the guy they need to talk and then...He knocks him out with knockout gas. Wh...Why?
Maybe the guy wanted to talk? Why are you knocking out and kidnapping a guy before you even find out if he has the info you need?!
....Back at the Embassy, we find Marlene is inside and not happy.
People forget that while Marc has a grudge and hate of Bushman, Marlene is the one whose father was killed by him.
He tells Marlene that he's a man of the people, HIS people, and unfortunately his people are very poor. It seems he expects Marc to fix that situation.
Back to Marc and his poor decision making skills...
We find the man he's kidnapped waking up... and dangling upside down from the moon chopper.
Tumblr media
Not going to lie, his little wave in that first panel is sending me.
So it seems Bushman wants ten million dollars. Lemme just get the conversion calculator out: $25,456,099.59.
Yeah. I'd want that much too.
"He wants it in one week or he'll chop the girl to pieces."
"And where am I supposed to get Ten Mill?"
"Find a way! The General knows you've got the money!"
"I don't like what you had to say, Buddy. Have a nice fall."
And Marc pushes him out of the chopper.
Lucky for the man, Frenchie had bought the chopper down and the man only falls a couple feet.
He tells the man to tell Bushman that he'll be in touch.
Next up? Marc goes to see his accountant!
"You don't have ten million bucks lying around in 'sacks' somewhere."
LOL Marc...
"Your money's tied up in real estate and business interests and your art collection."
"So SELL some of the paintings. Sell some of my business interests."
"What wuld you like me to do? Hang a garage sale sign on the mailbox? 'Picasso for sale, CHEAP'? And as far as your business interests go, they're just that: INTERESTS. You have partners in these ventures that you would HURT by liquidating in a big hurry--Not to mention the employees."
Steven is in there having a FIT right now.
I'm dying right now because I was JUST talking to someone about how clever Steven was with their money and how Marc has no idea what he's doing with money and probably took two days to lose it all in the current run. I’d like to amend my statement to say he’d lose it in two hours.
"I don't know what you need the money for, it can't be anything Kosher, Marc. But we just can't swing it."
Marc apologizes for losing his temper. The accountant leaves and he tells Frenchie the bad news. "I'm what they call cash poor."
Oh Marc... Is... Is that a Khonshu bust on his desk? Wh...
Tumblr media
"That's the bad news. The good news is that we get to do this MY way."
Marc...
"And this time I go alone."
Back at the Embassy, we see a "Empire Cable commercial repair" truck pull up. A guy gets out and goes up to the gate.
Oh no. Is he doing what I think he's doing?
Tumblr media
MARC.
The guard says he can't let anyone in without varifying first. The General is busy and doesn't want to be disturbed so "I will call your company."
So he calls the number on the truck, which would not verify anything if this was a guy trying to sneak in. But what's logic for you?
And GUESS WHAT. The number goes to Frenchie putting on an accent.
He verifies the job and sends the cable repair guy in with another guard.
Once inside, Marc knocks out the guard with chloroform (Why does he had so much chloroform?) and rushes off, leaving the body in the middle of the floor.
And the tech brothers sure as heck notice a strange guy running around on the CCTV cameras.
They call the front gate and have a thing or two to say about a 'cable repair guy'.
Marc starts just opening random doors looking for Marlene.
A couple of guards spot him and Marc knocks them out. So much for his disguise.
Back in Moon Knight attire, he runs down the hall. The tech guys decide to take off. They know a bad fight when they see one coming.
Marc continues his quest of opening EVERY door he finds while yelling "MARLENE!"
Tumblr media
SIGH. Marc… This is why you need Steven and Jake. Just putting that out there.
So Marc beats up all the big buff gym boys.
I appreciate that they at one point get the upper hand and pin him down while beating him and Marc just goes "You'll have to do better than that" after taking a few hard hits.
Marc really does not treat the body well.
He asks the last guy where Marlene is before knocking him out.
He busts in so hard that I’m tempted to count it on my “jumps through window” tally.
Tumblr media
(Look at this dramatic idiot. This is the biggest wet cat yowling energy I’ve ever seen.)
SO he busts in and is met with a SAW-esque situation with Bushman on TV.
Bushman tells him he had to fly back to his homeland on urgent business and he's taken Marlene with him.
TO BE CONTINUED.
At the end of the issue we have a "Let's meet the team" afterward and we get to learn a little about the new group working on Moon Knight.
It's very brief. Mostly it's just how old they are, if they are married or have kids, and a few previous comic names they have worked on.
I'm going to be frank with you here. If you've been reading my other reviews, you have an idea on what's been going on in Marvel during this time and WHY Moench isn't writing Moon Knight at this time.
Marvel comics had just had a huge upheaval of all their major writers and artists due to disagreements with the editor in chief. So these are a lot of young guys that are coming in off of low name comics.
ALSO none of them talk about why or how they got placed into the Moon Knight run.
So my big question is why don't you think of these guys when you think of Moon Knight? I can name SO MANY writers and artists from may different runs that were amazing or terrible. Or even just mid. But these guys? Not even a blip on my chart.
Clearly Chuck Dixon had Moon Knight for more than just a guest writer or special.
Doing a little background look into him, he was best known for Punisher and DC comics like Batman, Nightwing, and Robin in the 1990s and 2000s.
He got his start in the big leagues with Conan and worked his way up to Marc Spector: Moon Knight. After that, he started on Punisher and Punisher war Journal. DC got their mits on him and he became "DC's most prolific Batman writer in the 1990s".
So yeah... Despite working on Moon Knight 1989-1992 for 25 issues... He just isn't a big name for the comic.
And honestly, the Marc Spector Moon Knight run was often considered very MID. Not outright terrible, but very directionless. It existed and left very little impact on the series.
I'll give it credit that it DID at least keep the series going and allow it to reboot again later instead of just disappearing forever. So thank you for that!
But… I remember that Zelenetz had an interview where he talked about where he had wanted to take Moon Knight after Vol 2 ended, but he was no longer on the project. Now I can’t help but wonder what would have happened if he had been allowed to keep going.
ANYWAYS… What issue are we on?
Marc Spector, Moon Knight: Issue #3: Butcher’s Moon

Tumblr media
Oh boy. Where’s that Content Warning able? I have a feeling this is about to get dicey.
WOW. Right out the gate!
Alright so... We see an airport and someone is going through customs.
We are now in Burunda.
And a very uh... characture... fellow... asks to see this guy's passport.
It's CLEARLY Marc in a disguise. He has a European UK Passport and is claiming to be Ian Waller, a photo journalist from Manchester sent to take pictures of how the country is doing under the new General leader Bushman.
The customs officer keeps his passport, telling him that he will get it back when he leaves. (Not a good sign.)
The town is "Freedomtown" and ....
Tumblr media
I'm going to make you squint at this picture.
You got a clearly poor country depicted under the rule of a tyrant that rules through fear and violence.
You got a car with the word "TAXI" spray painted on the side. He claims to be the only taxi in the country.
Then you have several children running after the 'photojournalist' yelling "White man rich? White man have dollar?"
Then on the corner you have what's clearly supposed to be a hooker and her pimp not too far away, though it's cleverly disguised as a bus stop and can be argued otherwise. Then you got homeless guys and bags of trash... There's a lot going on here. It's like a Where's Waldo of stereotypical poor African country depiction.
He gets in the taxi and the driver takes off.
"Driver? I didn't give you a destination."
"Only ONE destination, Sah. Only ONE Hotel."
(I am grinning at the idea of Marc putting on a fake Manchester Accent. Thank you Steven Grant MCU. He actually says "I guess it is, innit?" and I'm so happy).
The 'photojournalist' goes to take a picture of some military group and the Taxi driver smacks his camera down.
"No! NO picture without permission, Sah."
How very North Korea of you.
The Journalist gets to the hotel and starts to unpack.
Would you look at that? It's Marc Spector in disguise! (Another mustache) He vows that once it gets dark he's going to go looking for Marlene and also take care of Bushman.
We head over to the Presidential Palace.
Out front we see a truck arrive full of people and a bunch of guards with guns offloading them.
And in the back of the palace there is a large pool. So of course we see Marlene out for a swim in a tiny bikini. Getting back to the basics.
She gets out of the pool and Bushman offers her a robe. They exchange a few quips.
"What's your game, Bushman? What made you want to settle down and rule your own personal dungheap?"
"I Feel compassion for my people. This WAS my homeland. The Tribe my family belonged to once ruled this land frm end to end until the Europeans deposed them. Now I rule. I am like a warming sun shining on my people. I am like the rain that nourishes the soil."
"I can think of another thing that nourishes the soil, General. And you're full of it."
While they talk, they are interrupted by gunfire.
"You do amuse me. You find my ways harsh. I see them as direct. As sole ruler of Burunda, I face no opposition, no Bureaucracy. I am free to deal with my nation's problems efficiently."
We cut to another panel where we see soldiers with smoking guns and a pile of dead bodies of men young and old.
"Problems such as aids. I have found a cure for aids."
HISTORY TIME:
Alright. There is a LOT going on in that last panel. A LOT of history. A LOT of politics. a LOT of terrible things.
This comic came out in 1989. We are at the height of the Aids pandemic. I'm not going to get deeply into it, but if you have questions please feel free to ask. In America, it was seen strictly as a Homosexual disease and the people afflicted were written off, forgotten, and left to die alone and scared. In Africa, many places saw Aids as a sin-ful or taboo disease and they were cast out of their villages or outright killed.
It was a disease that wiped out a generation of homosexual men and is the reason why there are so few older gays for younger people to learn from. It's... It's a whole thing and there are papers and books and documentaries on it.
What I find interesting in relation to THIS comic in particular...
We are in 1989, it's still killing gay men and a lot of people saw this as a good thing. The way this panel is done is to show how terrible this is. It brings humanity to the aids victims and shows that killing them is NOT a solution and is a terrible thing. ALSO considering the Marvel editor in chief that caused a lot of writers to leave was intensely homophobic, this may have been a sneaky jab.
Take my word for it, there is a LOT going on.
It's a beautifully sad panel. I'm not going to show it because it has dead bodies and depicts extreme violence and is just too depressing.
Back to the comic!
Marlene yells at Bushman, demanding to be let go.
Bushman says that "Spector will come for you. He loves you more than he will ever admit to you, I know him. He will stop at nothing to get what he wants."
Back at the hotel we see a bunch of guards knocking on the 'photo journalist's' door.
They go inside only to find him gone!
Up on the roof, we have Moon Knight holding a bow and arrow set.
"Nobody in sight. Bushman probably has a curfew around here. Boy, is he strict. Hope nobody asks for my hall pass."
I must say that the colorist really did a fantastic job on the night time shading and moon light glow. It's just very pretty.
He climbs a bell tower to get a good view of the area and finds a military compound with a large fuel truck.
Marc, of course, gets a bright idea for a diversion.
One of the guards near the truck pulls out a cigaret and asks for a light. A note says "Translated from Domi, a local tribal dialect"
"I got your light, Pal." Marc says just before he lets loose an arrow.
What I love about this is that Marc understands him. Implying that Marc understands the dialect. This is why he's such a good mercinary. He isn't just good at killing and fighting. He was amazing at learning everything about the places he went, including the language.
The arrow hits the truck and BLAAAAAAAAAAM.
Oh look at that. An Ammunition storehouse.
Yeah, he blows that one up too. He's having a good time.
"That should keep their eyes off the rooflines and their minds off ME for a while."
We find Bushman in his private office wathing a women's fighting match.
Someone interrupts him to tell him that the supply depot has exploded and injured many men, but somehow not killed anyone.
"He is here." Bushman smiles.
If you will think back to issue 1 of Moon Knight, Marc did the exact same thing when he came back from the dead and was sneaking back into the dig site. He blew up a truck to cause a distraction.
I'm starting to think Marc might be a bit of a pyro.
"We now head Several Hundred Miles South" where a bunch of men are sitting around a camp fire near a helicopter.
And here we see Frenchie walking up. He starts in French, saying hello and asking if they speak French. Then English.
"I want to buy your helicopter."
"You are saying WHAT?"
"The Huey. I want to buy your Huey."
They laugh a little, thinking he is joking until Frenchie pulls out a suitcase full of money.
....Now... I'd like to point out that Frenchie did just as much work as Marc, possibly more, and got paid a lot. He never really did much with it... He probably has a lot saved up. He ALSO probably had Steven invest for him. I would not be surprised if Frenchie is richer than Marc.
So he takes off with the chopper and tosses behind the money.
Back in town, we see the soldiers running around looking for Moon Knight.
Up high, we see Moon Knight walking across the power lines towards the palace.
He sneaks inside and takes out a guard.
Elsewhere, we see two soldiers moving to retrieve Marlene for Bushman.
They hear the shower running and go to get her (and take a peek). She opens the curtain and reveals she's in her bathing suit and ready to fight. She sprays one guy with hot water in the face then kicks the other guard.
She manages to steal a fifle and takes off. "This is what Bushman calls an army? I might not even need this rifle."
Marc is having a similar thought.
Bullets fly all over as he runs down a hall.
"These guys can't be this bad at marksmanship by accident. It's more like they're just chasing me somewhere. If it's closer to Bushman, then I'm happy to oblige."
WINDOW! WINDOW! WE HAVE A WINDOW!
Tumblr media
Now, let me just say, I do love the Bushman design in this. This is how he SHOULD be. Not whatever that was that Bemis gave us.
Tumblr media
"Do you see this sword? It is the traditional weapon of my people."
"Thanks for showing me the family silverware, Bushman. But I'm here for the woman."
"Some things never change. You always did use snappy banter when you were most nervous, Spector. Defeat me and the woman's yours."
Marc asks why Bushman became obsessed with him.
"You represent everything I hate. A mercenary making his fortune from the miseries of the third world."
"Cut the bull! You made millions and never cared where the money came from as long as you could spend it. I may have been a mercenary, but you were a butcher! I never shot anyone who wasn't pointing a gun at me."
"It was just such softness that always got you in trouble!"
They start the battle. Marc with his nun-chucks snaps takes their swings. Bushman draws first blood when he slices through Marc's mask.
"It's not who bleeds first. It's who's left standing!"
Another slice cuts into Marc's side, but he's had worse.
Marc kicks him in the chest then smashes his face with the palm of his hand.
Marc goes full ...Marc... on Bushman, fists and blows. It's his fighting style to take hits and keep going.
Marc gets the upper hand and demands to know where Marlene is.
Bushman calls out to his men to shoot Marc.
"They shoot me, they hit you too!" Marc reminds him.
But then bullets rain down around them, snapping Bushman's sword in two.
Tumblr media
And Frenchie comes in with the chopper.
"Through playing the hero yet, Marc?"
"Good to hear your voice, Frenchie. Put her down as close as you can. This place is HOT."
Marlene wants to know why she can't just shoot Bushman and end it.
Marc tells her not to. He fails to give her any good reason other than that they need to get out of there quickly.
I have theories about this that I'll discuss in a moment.
Marc releases Bushman as soon as they start to take off.
"You walk away this time, General. THIS time!"
Frenchie opens fire, scattering the men to prevent them from trying to shoot them down.
Tumblr media
What I love about this is that Marc is still the chaotic, bad decision making, single man army, and utter goof he has always been and will continue to be when written well. He has a strange but endearing sense of humor and he does not take it well when those close to him are at risk.
So this story done, let’s address a few things!
In this introduction to the new series, you’ll notice a lot of people are missing.
Where’s Gena, Crawley, Samules, Nedda, Jake, and Steven? Why is this Marc Spector in title and the Spector Mansion? Why is Marlene suddenly addressing him as Marc and okay with dating Marc when she’s previously hated Marc and only wanted to be with Steven?
No one addressed their DID better than Moench. With Moench out of the picture, who was very forward thinking in terms of this mental illness and its depictions for its time, we are now at the mercy of people who have not done their research and who have not kept up with the evolution of mental illness. We are now at the mercy of writers that follow Hollywood depictions. Sure, Moench based it off of Hollywood at first, but somehow, this man was in touch with modern issues, accurate depictions of DID, PTSD, depression, dissociation… He had a gift.
With the upheaval at Marvel, they were more reliant on the reader and what the statistics told them readers wanted. Readers of the early 90s apparently wanted ACTION and HOT BABES and MANLY MEN. So guess what? Marc’s in charge and the others? They are going to be lucky to get any screen time. We’re going to start seeing more references to Marc ‘pretending to be other people’ and more references to Marc as being closer to Schizophrenia or ‘crazy’ than DID (or Multiple Personality Disorder, as it was known by at the time).
And all those side characters? We’ve already seen that Nedda has been retired. Samules? Also probably retired and replaced by Chloe up there in her bikini.
Gena? In the last run, Gena was talking a lot about leaving. She’d been through a lot and she, perhaps, was the first victim of being too close to them. She was beloved by Jake and she acted as a kind and nurturing voice with him. She brought out the best in him and he loved her boys like a doting uncle. And she was the first to get hurt.
So will we see Gena in this run? We’ll have to wait and see.
What about Crawley? An eccentric and useful man to Jake and Moon Knight. Here’s the deal on Crawley. Moench wrote him with such a unique way of speaking that other writers found it difficult to keep it going with him. Even his personality was pretty unique. So we aren’t going to see a whole lot of Crawley either, and he may change in how we see him.
Now for Jake and Steven? In Moench’s run, Marc took the back seat. From this point on in Moon Knight history, Marc is going to sit front and center and the other two are going to be passing fancies. Perhaps I’ll make a different analysis on this later. What DOES happen is that we are going to start seeing more of WHO Marc Spector really is, and not just what Steven and Jake see. (He's kind of a goofy idiot with severe self loathing).
Bushman: I think I talked about this before, but in case I didn’t or you haven’t read it yet, here we go again (for the first time?).
Bushman was never meant to be the BIG BAD. He was the catalyst. When Marlene asks Bushman why he’s obsessed with Marc, Bushman notes that he created Marc’s need to become Moon Knight.
In reality, he is the one that ‘killed’ Marc, which did take him to Khonshu’s temple and this made him take the shroud and become Moon Knight. He’s also the one that made Marc realize he had a conflicted code of ethics and morals.
But when it comes to Bushman, Marc does not see him as ‘the big bad’. He sees a frustrating man that has an unhealthy obsession with him and often causes him stress.
And we’ve seen time and time again that Bushman does not stand up to Marc’s fighting abilities. It’s why Bushman obsesses with him. He feels like Marc was just some random guy he found and somehow Marc is better than him. And while Bushman has set out to be the best, Marc doesn’t care. Marc just IS good at what he does.
So why do fans and writers see Bushman appear and go “OHHH” and get excited?
Because Bushman represents who Marc could have been. Bushman is a representation of Marc’s past. The violence, the killing, the coldbloodedness. He’s everything Marc was becoming but still fought against. Bushman is Marc’s inner struggle. He is what Marc rebels against but still turns to time and time again.
When Marc spirals, he spirals with the image of Bushman. He was never that bad. He was never seen as being as ‘good’ as Bushman because he would not let himself become that far gone. But as Moon Knight, they have proven to be better.
Of course then you have the writers that just have a thing for Bushman because he’s ‘badass’ (Looking at you Bemis) and don’t know how to utilize him properly.
Anyways! This was the start of “Marc Spector: Moon Knight”. What do you think so far?
I’m going to be taking these in batches and not one at a time. So expect longer posts when I get to them! (Unless you have a special single issue that deserves more time).
…this was a long post.

Cans... that little *crrrk* *hissssss.......* augh!! And then you can crunch them when you're done. Marvellous. Thank you inventor of the aluminium can.
11. What do you have for breakfast on an average day?
Salmon bagel :))
18. Ideal weather?
WARM! Let my bones rest 😭 warm very warm but with shade and cold drinks and all that jazz.
20. Preferred place to write?
My phooone. No laptop, though a note pad suffices if my phone is out of reach. All 300k words of bbb (that's plus unposted possible chapters) was done on my phone. with my fingers.
30. Places you find sacred?
THIS PLACE!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
BIG tree! Hundreds of years old. Four swings hanging from the branches! Howw many people sat there? Carved their names into it to be immortalised, swung on those swings?? The energy there.
I'm not a religious person, but if I were, I'd worship the tree.
33. Most used phrase in your phone?
Augh this one's difficult because it implies I am conscious of what I put down but its probably omg
Like on its own. Or HELP that one's common.
44. Favourite scent for soap?
I bought @airlocksandaviaries some nice soap one time and bought myself some Lily-of-the-Valley soap. And I have Not used mine because I like the scent so much...
55. Favourite fairytale?
Always been a fan of the tragic ones. The ones that were originally deep and dark and nasty, before they became Disney-fied. The original Rapunzel was nice, not that I don't like the new one, but it was nice. The original message behild Little Red Riding Hood — a young girl flowering into womanhood who is approached by a strange older man who wants to make her his — has always fascinated me because !!! Argh beast metaphors and hunger and. Yeaaahhhh bbbcore..
61. Favourite flowers?
Orchids are nice. Tulips were for a while!
Recently I found THESE
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Black petunias!! I tool them because they're JUST LIKE ME FR! And they smell awful, like burnt rubber and bleach, but I LOVE THEM!!!!!!
69. A Fun Fact that you don't know how you learned?
@chaetophractus-vellerosus — most doors are universally 6 foot 9 inches, so it's easy to guess someone's height based on whether they have to bend through a door. Finch, I asked my friend where we had found that out, and apparently I knew it Before we had used it to work out Drew Gooden's height. So. I actually dunno where the information came from.... got that doortism though.
76. Favourite potato food?
AAAUGGHGH POTATOEEESSSS!!!!!!!! I like fried potatoes, I had real patatas fritas like a month ago and almost died it was so tasty. I like all manner of potatoes though. Give me the potatoes...
83. Writing or Drawing?
Both? Both!! I absolutely adore putting my thoughts onto a canvas. Whether that be a digital one where I'm throwing notes at a wall and seeing what sticks or a physical one where I'm just figuring everything out by swiping paint on white paper.
94. Favourite season?
SUMMER! Ironic because in Britain we (used to...) don't get very hot summers. We're almost there folks!
98. Favourite historical era?
A question I'm not sure I know the answer to! Dropped history almost as soon as I started it, to take geography instead, so I'm gonna say the devonian era and be done with that:)) (that's when bony fish were evolved and doing their thing with no dinosaurs to tell them what not to do)
CHOCO. I LOVE YOUU !!!!!

I have gotten a singular like on my iron widow post thus you are all now subjected to some of my favorite quotes!
also beware of spoilers (plus a bit of commentary on some of the later ones)
“Welcome to your nightmare” (82)
“It’s hilarious. Men want us so badly for our bodies, yet hate us so much for our minds” (94)
“Be their nightmare, Wu Zetian.” (95)
“There’s no guilt, no rage, no hesitation in his eyes. Only a resolve so clear it steals my breath away.” (99)
“I’m becoming no less of a monster, but that’s ok. It takes a monster to slay a monster.” (102)
“Our fingers curl together, much gentler than when we were trying to take each other’s lives.” (109)
“‘A funeral?’ I say with mock casualness. ‘Did the attendees know he died like a girl?’” (113)
“Too bad. I am exactly the kind of ice-blooded, rotten-hearted girl he fears I am. And I am fine with that.” (114)
“‘You think this scares me?’ I say, unbelievably calm for how rabidly I’m fraying apart on the inside. ‘You think I ever liked being alive? Go ahead. Do me a favor.’” (118)
“Okay. So Li Shimin is absolutely fucking bonkers, I guess.” (127)
“Oh no. I am also absolutely fucking bonkers.” (130)
“The bloodlust in his eyes rouses something primal and deep-rooted inside me, something that finds it so… Utterly relatable.” (153)
“Yizhi gulps. A blush reddens his ears, and a quizzical feeling stirs inside me.” (171)
YES!! i am seeing the poly vision
“He should be the Iron King, and I should be the Iron Queen. Yet Iron Demon and Iron Widow is all they’ll let us be.” (199)
“How do you take the fight out of half the population and render them willing slaves? … You tell them over and over, until it’s the only truth they’re capable of living.” (210)
“We are wholly the Vermillion Bird, commanding it in sync.” (239)
“No one’s sure why it worked out for us.” (248)
because of the poly vision ofc
i’m so excited for it
“This isn’t his victory. This is my temporary mercy. With a head full of fantasies of how I’ll flag him alive after he outlived his use, I unzip my pilot coat.” (264)
“Despite their best efforts, I find myself worthy of happiness.“ (276)
“I will slather him for what he did to Shimin. He has shot to the top of my ever-growing hit list. It’s the least I can do.” (283)
“We can live for more. We can live for justice. Change. Vengeance. Power.” (298)
“I like him a lot better than his distant cousin who I killed.” (302)
Me too
“Despite the endless horrors that we’ve both been through, I really am grateful that we survived to meet each other.” (311)
“He snaps the collar off his neck and hurls it to the ground with the force of a thunderclap.” (325)
holy shit these last two pages (324-325) are insane and giving me everything i want YES my vengeance driven queen and king i love you both so so so much
“Before you die, let me confirm something for you: girls like me are everywhere, barely putting up the facade of wives and daughters and concubines. And I don’t think they’ll be very happy about the army’s lies.” (327)
“Perks of refusing to play by the rules: you don’t have to choose between the boy who’d torture a man to death with you and the boy who’d welcome you back with pastries after.” (328)
Yizhi looks at a loss for words for a few seconds, then schools his expression. ‘Don’t be, handsome.’ He winks. I have to bite my lip not to laugh at the look on Shimin’s face.” (331)
“I roll my eyes, make a triangle out of my fingers, and nod.” (331)
YES the poly vision has been realized

“Her face is stunning, yet her eyes seethe with the deepest, blackest hatred.” (372)
“Wu Zetian … Be their nightmare.” (373)
“Even though everything feels impossible, even though I will never be the same, even though all I want to do is lie down and give up, I make myself keep going.” (373)
“There will be no redemption. It is not me who is wrong. It’s everyone else.” (380)

Hi! Just followed your blog and I love your art. I was wondering if you had any recommendations for getting into Black Cat comics? I’ve mostly only seen her in Silk and wanted to get into reading her storyline more but don’t know where to start. Do you have any recommendations?
Ahh omg tysm!!! I definitely have recs for Felicia!! 😸 I’m not going to include every appearance she’s ever had but my rec list is gonna be pretty heavy bc she’s my fav 🫶🫶 I’m also gonna include some non-canon comics, miscellaneous media, and fanfics I enjoy because i have so many recs LMAO
Earth-616
I’m gonna try to keep these in order but no promises!! This begins with Fel’s first appearance and ends with her latest appearance.

Amazing Spider-Man (2022) #6 (She also is in #5 & #11 but I actually wouldn’t recommend this run and am only including #6 because it has the Peterfel B-day kiss that I thought that art of was cute 😿)
Mary Jane & Black Cat: Dark Web #1-5 (Only #1 & #2 are out atm but I’m including the next three issues for future reference!)
Non-Canon/Not Earth-616
Spider-Man Noir (2009) #1-4 and Spider-Man Noir: Eyes without a Face #1-4 (Obviously I wouldn’t be a Peterfel main if i didn’t suggest SM Noir. My user is literally Earth-90214 I basically have to.)
Marvel’s Spider-Man: The Black Cat Strikes (This one’s actually a tie-in with the Insomniac Spider-Man DLC: the Heist!!)
Spider-Gwen #5, #26, #33 (Black!Felicia is a pretty popular hc and one both me and my mutuals use so a canonical black Fel variant is definitely on my rec list.)

What If…? #4 (1989) (Follows Felicia after Peter dies because of bonding with the symbiote suit.)
What If…? #21 (1989) (What if Peter married Felicia)
Misc Media
Spider-Man: Web of Shadows, Spider-Man: Edge of Time, and Insomnic’s Spider-Man: The Heist/ Silver Linings DLC are all games that have Felicia in them!! I believe that the Spider-Man 2 (2004) game and TASM games from 2012 & 2014 also have Fel in them but I haven’t watched those play throughs so I can’t say for certain how much content there is.
There are some cut scenes from TASM 2 that feature Felicity Jones as Felicia working for Harry Osborn! Unfortunately we never get to see her in costume but she still does a great job and I wish we got her as Fel in TASM 3 🥲
Spider-Man: the Animated Series (1994): s1 eps 2-7 & 10, s2 eps 1-2/6-10, s3 eps 4-6/12-13, s4 eps 2-7, s5 eps 1/7/8-12
Spectacular Spider-Man: s1e10, s2e12
Spider-Man (2017) s1ep4, s2ep1 (I actually can’t stand this show, but its the only adaptation that portrays Felicia’s glowing, cat-like eyes seen in her first appearance so for that, it gets a pass.)
Fanfics
Felicia has a pretty small ao3 tag with <1,500 works, but there are some fantastic fics that I definitely suggest reading (and authors you should definitely follow)!!
@the-cat-and-the-birdie has a Post-NWH Peterfel/PeterMjFel fic that I’ve really been enjoying and is currently ongoing!!
@seek--rest !! Seek’s mostly an mcu/spideychelle writer but has some really fantastic Felicia-centric/Felicia appearance fics up that i definitely suggest.
Both of @traincat’s Insomniac Peterfel fics are great reads that are on my (very short) list of fics i regularly re-read.
@justmattycakes’s Insomniac Peterfel series is another series on my re-read list! 10/10
any fic in @splendidnothings’s peterfelweek ao3 collections/works. Going thru the @peterfelweek blog or tag in general is a great place to find fics and art.
Naturally I have to suggest myself as well 🤭 I just started a new Peterfel series that I’m looking forward to updating soon! It’s a comic au without a solid timeline and is mostly just interconnected oneshots that center domestic Peterfel. I’m also working on a Felicia-centric fic based on a really cool headcanon that @peterbwatsonparker sent me about psychic/medium Felicia that I’m hoping to post in the next few weeks!! I also have a decent amount of headcanons posted on my blog that never made it into full fics, but my most popular ones (and my personal favorites) are my Mutant!Felicia headcanons.
Obviously these are just my personal recs, so I’m definitely missing some stuff, but if you’d like a complete list of Fel’s mainstream comic appearances you can find that here!!
