there's a zombie apocalyse 🧟‍♂️🧟‍♀️🧟🧟‍♀️🧟‍♂️🧟 !!! thankfully you found a safe haven, and it's time to pick your job! here are your options:
- getaway vehicle driver
- zombie killer
- farmer
- barricade repairer
- supply gatherer
- conflict mediator
- doctor
- teacher
Okay, so this is a personal pet peeve of mine when it comes to zombie fiction, as someone who has worked with wildlife and specifically with rabid animals (which is basically as close to real life zombies as we get), you do not want to be killing zombies.
Zombies are infectious, if their bite can infect you, shooting them or stabbing them with knives is 100% going to expose you and anyone nearby to that same level of infection.
It's why if you encounter a rabid animal you do not shoot it. You capture it if you can in a trap (if you can't safely, then you just call animal control), and bring it to someone qualified to handle the situation. They can safely and humanly put the animal down without exposing more people to rabies.
So, in a situation like a zombie apocalypse, how do you handle zombies if you can't shoot them?
There's really two options here. The first is the "pillow armor" approach, which is quite simple. Wrap yourself up in thick blankets to prevent zombie teeth from reaching you and the just walk through them. If you have access to the materials, leather armor would do wonders. You can gently push the zombies away and possibly push them into a pit or something similar.
The secondary approach, which is the more long term approach, is to effectively hood zombies. Prepare either thick fabric or leather hoods (much like what falconer's use), and simply place hoods on the zombies, then tighten a cord to hold the hood in place. These guys can't untie the cord, so they're stuck with the hood. This would effectively neutralize the zombie and make them very easy to move to confined areas where the infection can't spread any further. It also means that if someone in the future accidentally encounters them, the zombie would be mostly harmless. If needed, you could also put mittens on the zombies to remove their ability to grab or scratch people.
So that's my job. I'm making hoods with cat ears on them and going around sticking them on zombies to render them mostly harmless and then also probably herding them into pens or something so they don't die near water sources. That's my job at the zombie commune.

Ok so got to the train dinner scene in English and you know I love the train scene right? So I'm PUMPED
(long post/spoilers below the cut, etc. etc.)
And like sure Sherlock and William read as flirtatious, and some of the word play is interesting (different translation than the subtitles, or from the manga) but it also feels like it loses impact.
Someone who can speak Japanese could probably say more than me, but there is just something so poignant about the way William breaks out into English to say the classic "Catch me if you can, Mr. Holmes" in the sub.
I predicted that shock would wear off, but they don't even leave the line the same!! It's "Come and catch me if you can, Mr. Holmes" (emphasis mine).
And also, Sherlock specifically prompts William to say something. "If you were this mastermind, what would you say?"/ "Come and catch me if you can, Mr. Holmes ... Yes, I suspect you would derive satisfaction at hearing those words."
In the sub translation, it's William choosing to say it, adding to Sherlock's "joke." Same thing with the manga.
"Still...I was just thinking how great it would be if you were the sharp witted mastermind." / "Catch me if you can Mr. Holmes ... would that satisfy you to hear me say that, Mr. Detective?"
The sub is much more faithful to the manga here too.

(Also look at Sherlocks blush in the manga. He's getting a little pink, then William makes it clear he has the excuse of joking back, and it's a full face blush for a second. I adore how emotional Sherlock is, in all iterations but especially in the manga.
It doesn't have to be flirtation that's causing the blush, it could be anger, or amusement, or a lot of things. But I personally feel like that look William gets when he is challenging Sherlock is one of the sexiest things ever, and if I were Sherly, I would do exactly that too sooo)

I was talking with a friend earlier today, with all of the experiments they do on rats they should be dedicating some of those resources to allowing rats to live 100 years without suffering any health consequences as a result.

If my mom sees a significant amount of blood she gets lightheaded, and has fainted on some occasions. Once it happened when we were kids, I wasn't there to witness it but I heard the story from my dad. Basically my brothers, around 7 or 8 at the time, were playing outside while my mom was making their lunch, and she accidentally cut her finger. It wasn't anything serious, but it drew a fair bit of blood and she passed out. My dad saw this and rushed over, but he didn't really know what to do so he just sort of started slapping her to wake her up (not recommended, but he had no idea and panicked)
At that exact moment my brothers both came in from playing, and all they saw was our mom unconscious on the floor and our dad slapping her. So, like, without even saying a word to each other they both just INSTANTLY start whaling on him, like, full blown attack mode to defend our mom. Which obviously didn't help the situation, but she did wake up and everything was fine.
Now our dad says that he's actually really glad they attacked him over what they thought was going on, because it means he raised good boys. And I still think that's true, they're very good boys.

Photographers all know about polarizing filters. They remove reflections off the surfaces of objects. We use them to see into water or windows that are obscured by those reflections. But anything with an even slightly glossy surface has a layer of reflection on top. So if you have a shiny green plant, it can remove the shiny and reveal a very saturated green underneath. Polarizers also remove a lot of scattered and reflected light from the sky. Which reveals a deep blue color you didn't even know was there.
Here is a photo I took of my circular polarizer.
Tumblr media
And the first thing I noticed when walking outside during the eclipse was the color of everything was more saturated, just like in that circle. Apparently, an eclipse significantly reduces polarized light and I got this creepy feeling because I was only ever used to seeing the world like that through the viewfinder of my camera.
The other thing I noticed was my outdoor lights. I leave them on all the time because I never remember to turn them on at night. And usually the sun will render them barely visible during the day. On a very sunny day they almost look like they are off.
Tumblr media
But you can clearly see they are shining and even flaring the camera during the eclipse.
Our eyes adjust to lighting changes very well so it was hard to tell how much dimmer things were, but that is a good indication. I took this photo a few minutes ago and you can see how dim the lights appear after the moon has fucked off.
Tumblr media
I did a calculation using the exposure settings between these two photos. The non-eclipse photo has 7 f-stops more light. That is 128 times or 12,700% more light.
A partial Pringle eclipse cut the sun's light by 99.2% and somehow our eyes adjusted to make it seem like a normal sunny day (with weird ass saturated colors).

if you're about to get top surgery, you may hear a voice in your head telling you to make a joke about getting something off your chest even though it's overplayed. im here to let you know it's your imperative and sacred duty to not only make the joke but to tell it to every person you talk to. and that you are right it would be funny as fuck. this is not sarcastic if you tell enough people one of them will have never heard it before and also it's still funny to every person who has heard it listen to me this is a once in a life time opportunity— [i start getting dragged out by the palace guards] commit to the bit!!! if you don't you'll forever wish you had!! heed my warning or forever suffer the cons— [castle door slams shut behind us]

If you want to write a dumb little story with a dumb little plot and ridiculously silly characters. No one's stopping you. Genuinely, no one should be allowed to stop you. Write that dumb story with your whole heart and don't hold back.

"internet historian's alt-right anyways" "great day to have never liked james somerton" "never even heard of illuminaughtii before this lol"
that's great buddy but don't go around thinking you're immune to this. if you're not looking for plagiarism, you likely won't notice it unless its egregiously obvious. hell, you've probably consumed plagiarized content without even realizing it. even hbomb pointed out that these people disguised what they presented pretty well as long as you didn't try and dig deeper. don't come away just thinking of this as a callout piece, take this as an important lesson about vetting your sources. if googling scripts in quotes was enough to expose the original, we should all start doing that shit!!
edit: it got a little too doomer-y a little too fast so one quick addition
this is hbomb's curated playlist of queer creators, many of whom were victims of plagiarism
this is producer kat on reddit calling for any more plagiarism discoveries and for queer content creators to be uplifted
please take some time to uplift these creators and recommend any you know! if you can help uncover more of the original creators whose work was lifted that would be great too :)
UPDATE- From Hbomb's twitter: "We're in the process of cataloguing everyone James Somerton plagiarised and finding their contact information. Which is quite a task, so to help us out: If you see this and happen to be one of the people Somerton stole from, please email us at [email protected]"

people online talk so much about hating babies and kids but in "the meatspace" people LOVE babies. hang out with a baby and you will see so many people staring at you with big smiles and waving at you and going "that baby is SO cute" and generally being pleasant unprompted. the lady at the vietnamese place just now gave us like three extra soup spoons because my niece loves those spoons but kept dropping them on the floor and the lady kept giving us more with a massive smile on her face. on our walk today a bunch of construction guys waved and grinned at her the whole time we walked by, and when we passed by an elementary school a little girl said "your baby's really sweet!" babies are not balls of irritation and hatred they are beacons of joy and kindness actually and they bring out the best in strangers. whenever im out with her we have multiple positive interactions with strangers who are so happy to see her. or maybe it's just that my baby niece is the cutest most wonderful baby in the world :]
