now is a great time to remind all of us of how noble a hero percy jackson is. because he refused to harm the demigods who fought beside luke. as much as he hated the fighting them, he understood why the were fighting. he recognized the gods failed them too. and to not acknowledge that in the aftermath of the war would be disingenuous to the lives lost on either side. and not only that. but he was the only demigod brave enough to tell gods how it is when they offered him immortality. he told the gods to their face that their faults in leadership and parenthood are what lead to their near demise. that they must swallow their pride and nurture the things they create, or the threat of a revolt will follow them. and his ass used his gods-given wish to make them promise to give their children a fair chance at a better life. no one was doing it like him. happy birthday, man.

(disclaimer that i haven’t actually played ea, my impression of it is only based on what i’ve read/seen online) but i actually don’t think ea wyll would have been a more compelling character. we frankly did not need another brash character, or one that’s treading the line of power hungry. wyll did not need to be darker or more morally gray to be more interesting.

it may be because i actually find his kindness to be the most compelling aspect about him. he is a man that’s been stripped of his home, of his name, of his appearance and he’s clinging to that kindness and goodness as the last aspects of himself. he wants people to see him as the blade, because wyll is a memory of a memory (his lines). good or kind doesn’t mean easy and we see first hand what kind of punishments he faces for choosing to do the right thing but he’ll do it to keep his soul with whatever he has left. the very same soul that’s been given to a devil.

and he’s not above violence quite the opposite. he approves of going after the duergars when he hears they murdered the myconoid’s children. he says they should bathe gortash in his own blood. he has no mercy for vile individuals but he forgives like it’s breathing.

that’s not to say his writing wouldn’t have benefitted from care and attention that frankly was not given. or a few additional scenes that allow you to see behind the high charisma, the memory of a memory that’s struggling to carry it all.

but i don’t know i think that wyll, who might’ve once been naive but he hasn’t been for many many years. who saw the injustice of the world and got angry at everyone (mortal and gods) who wouldn’t help. who chooses to be kind exactly because the world isn’t. who keeps that choice, the only agency he has with a bloodied grip, and that’s something no one could take from him. it is that conscious choice to act despite the terrible situation he found himself in at only 17, that is the beating heart of his character.

good and moral or honourable is not necessarily boring. you may personally not wish to engage with it or find yourself gravitating towards, but it doesn’t make it less compelling by default.

i think one of the lines in the beginning about how he doesn’t remember much of the battle, but he remembers drying that boy’s tears, is the essence of all that above, and the kind of man wyll wishes to be (& actually is)

We all agree the Curator kept Maelle inside the manor and trained with her just because Ranoir was worried for his daughter, right? That's also why he followed the Expedition and became our blacksmith? Just to make sure his daughter was safe even when she lacked her memories.

On the side note, how did he feel when he saw Maelle running to Gustave? When he saw her mourning another brother, even in this different world. A brother taken from her by a representation of how his wife saw him.

And then, to put a nail in the coffin he got to see Maelle growing closer with Verso. Not their Verso but Verso nonetheless.

luke fumbling in recruiting percy has to be one of his greatest failures. a beautiful thing the show does regarding luke and percy's relationship is building rapport between them through shared moments like settling into camp, eating meals together, but especially through swordfighting lessons. the swordfighting scene at the beginning of episode 8 not only reveals that percy and luke already share similar beliefs about the fear-based system the gods have cultivated, but it's clear the conversation stays with percy when he fights ares and later calls out zeus on his waning skills as a father and a king. however, luke's plan fell through the moment percy learned that the winged-shoes were meant to drag him to tartarus. not only that, but the shoes nearly killed grover, a friend percy cared for deeply. if nourishing loyalty and trust was the key to ensuring a partnership with percy, then it was luke's faulty planning, arrogance, and impatience that cost him the greatest ally he could ask for.
