I never touched it but I feel like i only ever hear positive things said about song of achilles.. in (rough strokes at least) what makes it dogshit to you?
Okay it's been a while since I actually read it so some of this might not be spot on accurate. Sorry if at any point I say 'the book never does xyz' and it actually does once or twice but I think my underlying criticisms are accurate
-Patroclus is made into like this soft gentle tender quivering little yaoi boy. In the source text, he's shown as compassionate and moved by the suffering of his own men (and apparently having some medical skill, tending to the wounded in the camp), but very much invested n combat and very, very good at it (pages worth of descriptions of the guys he's killing left and right). In this, the arguably more complex character from this 8th century BC text is flattened into Being A Healer, he doesn't want to go to war he just wants to help people, he only goes because Achilles has to but he doesn't want to fight he's a HEALER he's a gentle lover NOT A FIGHTER who just wants to help he just wants to help everyone around him he HEALS while Achilles is a doomed warrior who is so good at fighting and KILLING its a DICHOTOMY GUYS!!!LIKE THE BEAUTIFUL SUN AND MOON DOOMED LOVERS SO SAD patocluse HEALER . (I Think he's specifically characterized as being BAD at fighting but might be misremembering)
-I don't remember much about Achilles' characterization I think it just makes him less of a jackass while not adding anything of interest and levels out into being mad boring.
-Not getting into the literal millenias old debate whether the mythological characters Achilles and Patroclus were being characterized as some type of lover by the original oral sources of the Iliad or its Homeric writers. We will never know. We don't even know what (if any) culturally accepted conventions of male homosexuality existed in bronze age Greece (we know much more about their descendants). But there are some interesting elements of their characterization in this direction, with how unconventional their relationship is WITHIN the text itself- Patroclus is described as cooking for Achilles and his guests (very specifically a woman/wife's job), Achilles chides Patroclus like a father, but there's also scene where Achilles' mourning of him directly echoes a passage of Hector's wife mourning her husband, Patroclus is explicitly stated to Achilles' elder, and is overall treated as his equal or near-equal, closest confidant and most beloved friend (to the point that pederastic classical Greeks would debate over who was erastes (older authority figure lover) and who was eromenos (adolescent 'beloved')- many took it as a given that this text depicted their present-day cultural norms of homosexual behavior but it existed so Outside of these norms that it had to be debated who was who). Their relationship is non-standard both within the text and to the descendants of the civilization that wrote them.
Basically what I'm saying is this book had opportunities to like, explore the unconventionality of the relationship (being presented here as explicitly lovers), explore the dynamics of why Patroclus wants to do 'women's work' (besides being a tenderhearted softboy), the weird dynamics where they take on paternal roles to each other but also roles of wives, how they feel about being this way, and just kind of Doesn't. Which I guess isn't an intrinsic fault (because it omits much of what I just talked about to begin with). it's just like.... Lame. This book takes jsut abandons everything interesting about the source text in favor of flattening it into bland Doomed Yaoi.
-The conflict that sets off the core story of the Iliad is Achilles and Agamemnon fighting over Briseis, an enslaved Trojan woman taken by Achilles as a war-trophy, Achilles spends most of the story moping because he was dishonored by his 'trophy' being taken. Achilles and Patroclus and everyone else are raping their captives, all the women in the story are either captured Trojans (or in the case of the free women within the walls of Troy, soon to be enslaved, and are slave owners themselves). Slavery as an institution and extreme patriarchal conventions are innate to the text and reflective of the context in which it was developed. You cannot avoid it.
But obviously you can't have your soft yaoi boys doing this, so the author has them capturing women to Protect Them from the other men. Their slaves are UNDER THEIR PROTECTION and VERY SAFE (and they might even Like And Befriend Them but I might be misremembering that. Briseis does though). Our heroes have apparently absorbed none of the ideals of the culture they exist in and the author seems to think "they're gay and aren't sexually attracted to their captives" would translate to them being outright benevolent (also as if wartime sexual violence is just about attraction and not part of a wider spectrum of violent acts to dehumanize and brutalize an accepted 'enemy')
In the source text, Briseis mourns Patroclus as being the kindest to her of her captors, who tried to get her a slightly better outcome by getting her married to Achilles (which probably would be the Least Bad of all possible outcomes for a woman in that situation, becoming a legal wife instead of a slave), and wonders what will happen to her now that he's gone. This is a really really sad, horrible, and compelling dynamic which could be fleshed out in very interesting ways but is instead is tossed entirely aside in favor of them being Besties. Like brother and sister.
All of the above pisses me off so much. If you don't want to engage in the icky parts of ancient/bronze age Greece then don't write a retelling of a story taking place in bronze age Greece. I'm not gonna get mad at children's adaptations of Greek myths or silly fun stories loosely based on them for omitting the rape and slavery but it is SO fundamental to the Iliad. If you're not willing to handle it, either fully omit it or better yet set your Iliad inspired yaoi in an invented swords-and-sandals setting where you can have all your heartbreaking tragic doomed lovers plot beats and not have to clumsily write around the women they're brutalizing.
-The author didn't seem to know what to do with Thetis and she made her just like, Achilles bitch mother who spends most of the story trying to separate our Yaoi Boys (iirc her disguising Achilles as a girl and hiding him on Scyros is made to be more about getting him away from Patroclus than trying to save her son from his prophesied doom in the Trojan War) until she sees how much they loooove each other and I think helps Patroclus' spirit get to the afterlife or something in the end?
-This is more of a personal taste gripe but it has that writing style I loathe where the prose feels less like a story and more like an attempt to string together Deep Beautiful Hard Hitting Poetic Lines that will look great as excerpts on booktok (might predate booktok but same vibe). It's all very Pretty and Haunting and Deep but feels devoid of real substance.
I really like The Iliad and The Odyssey in of themselves. They're fascinating historical texts that give a window into how 8th century BC Greeks told their stories, saw their world, interpreted their ancestors, etc. And genuinely I think these texts have 'good' characters, there's a lot of complexity and humanity to it.
WRT the Iliad- all of the main Achaeans are pretty fascinating, the one singular part where Briseis Gets To Talk and laments her situation is great, Achilles fantasizing that all of the Trojans AND the Achaeans die so he and Patroclus alone can have the glory of conquering Troy (wild), Achilles asking to embrace Patroclus' shade and reaching out for him but it's immaterial (and the shade being sucked back underground with a 'squeak' (the squeak kinda gets me it's disturbing and sad)), Hecuba talking about wanting to tear out Achilles' liver and eat it in a (taboo, exceptioally pointed) expression of rage and grief for his mutilation of her son's corpse, just one tiny line where the enslaved women performing ritual wailing for their dead captors are described as using it as an outlet to 'grieve for their own troubles' is heartrending, etc. A lot of grappling with anger and grief and the inevitability of death, a lot of groundwork laid for characters that could be very interesting when expanded upon in the framework of a conventional novel.
And Song Of Achilles really doesn't do much with all that. I know a lot of my gripes here are kind of just "It's different from the Iliad", I would have thought of it as mostly mediocre and forgettable rather than infuriating if it wasn't a retelling (and I DEFINITELY have strong biases here). But I think the ways in which it is different are less just a product of a retelling (of course there's going to be omissions and differences) and more a complete and utter disinterest in vast majority of its own subject matter, to the book's detriment. I think a retelling has a point when it EXPANDS on the source, or provides a NEW ANGLE to the source. This book doesn't Really do either, it just shaves off the complexity of its source material, renders the characters into a really boring archetype of a gay relationship, and gives very little else. Its content boils down to a middling tragic romance that has been inserted into the hollowed out defleshed skeleton of the Iliad.
Bottom line: I definitely would not be as mad about it if I wasn't familiar with the source material but I think it's fair to expect a retelling to Engage with/expand on its source, and I also think it's weak purely on its own merits. This book was set up to disappoint Me specifically.
#Sorry this turned into a 100000 word essay on The Iliad it can't be helped#I read Circe by the same author and thought it was like.. better? Definitely not great just less aggravating and kind of boring#Just rote 'you heard about this villainous woman from a Greek myth... Here's the REAL story' shit#It did have a few things I thought were good I remember it starting kind of strong and then just going limp for the remaining duration#I think part of it is that in that case she's expanding on a figure that Didn't have a whole lot of characterization in the source so#like. She had to actually Expand The Character#Again Silence of the Girls is the only Greek Mythology Retelling I have like....positive?.leaning positive? feelings towards#I've got BIG issues with it too but it does pretty much the exact opposite of everything I'm mad at SOA for and in some very#compelling ways (it's just that the author seems way more interested in Achilles and Patroclus than The Main Character Briseis#to the point of randomly starting to have Achilles POV interjections (which I thought were Good in of themselves but#really really really really really really really didn't need to be there) and then get kind of lampshaded by Briseis narrating 'I guess I#was trapped in Achilles' story the whole time lol!!!!!!')#It undermines the book on both a thematic level and just like. a construction level like it's real sloppy at times.#Also the Briseis POV sometimes has these like really out of place Author Mouthpiece Moments where she's very obviously#Stating The Point to the audience and it's like yeah we get it. We get it.#Wow in the scene were our mostly silent enslaved protagonist removes the gag from the mouth of a dead sacrificed girl as a#small but significant act of defiance and grieving in a book called 'Silence of the Girls' you inserted an ironic repeat of the line#'silence befits a woman'. in italics even. Thanks for that. I could not possibly have grasped the meaning of this scene if you didn't#spell it out for me like that. Thank you.#Actually hang on the only Greek mythology retelling I have unequivocally positive feelings for are the 'Minotaur Forgiving'#songs on 'This One's For The Dancer And This One's For The Dancer's Bouquet'. Fully love it. Like not just as songs I think it#does function well as a narrative and engages with and expands on the source in really beautiful and creative ways

i am legitimately tempted to let the scoundrel lose her soul. not permanently, but just as like. An Incident™, y'know. a one-off goof. a gag, if you will
#again. not permanently. just for a few weeks at most#just to enjoy the Experience. and make all of her buddies fret over her#yin-thoughts#fallen london#the thing abt the scoundrel is losing her soul is definitely 100% in-character. she's completely charmed by devils#she falls victim to that stuff Very Very Easily#she's been riding along at like. 12-13 intimate with devils for months at this point#it's just that on a character and thematic level i dont think it works for him#in a meta sense i feel like the scoundrel already has more than enough going on as a character without adding soullessness on top of that#and in a thematic sense there's not really much removing her soul could accomplish in the long-term#that isnt already fulfilled by like. her preexisting chronic depression issues. yknow??#walking around with a hollow feeling in her heart isnt new to the scoundrel.#sure being soulless will just bring that sensation to the forefront all over again#but it's not doing much for her beyond making her confront that sensation and Potentially come to terms with it.#only because she's literally forced to.#beyond that one-time occurrence i don't think being soulless would add to her narrative. and as yall probably already know#/probably can already tell by now#hypothetical oc narratives are very important to me ( ꈍᴗꈍ)#tldr if the scoundrel ever fails that 90% luck check and loses her soul i wouldnt fix it immediately but i Would fixing it At Some Point#there's only room for one violant-eyed soulless aristocrat in this city (hi hiram)

Thinking about human versions of the tadc gang. I think they would work great in The Office (they would suffer immensely)
#⚠️ WARNING: me rambling into the void about the office workers theory#also thinking about what jobs they have in real life cus idk there’s a lot of weird stuff#my theory has always been that they’re just office workers at c&a and while I still think that’s true there’s like a few wrinkles about it#like I feel like if everyone was just coworkers and also remember their past lives wouldn’t they recognize the others at the circus#not even anything big like if could be their voice or random habit but who knows if the circus just erases that too and not just their names#lot even just put together that they all put on a headset for their job and that they’re all suspiciously office workers for c&a#also there’s like a couple mentions that could be interpreted either way#like gangle being a manager and zooble being a tattoo artist ‘at one point’ specifically#they could have pivoted from those jobs to the office stuff if they only did it at one point in time#but also depends on how long that would to go from one job cus of it takes years idk if zooble is old enough#also queenie being into entomology could just be her job where she was then invited to play test or she could just like bugs as a side hobby#idk a lot of things but at the same time them working the same job together just fits perfectly and also thematically#cus like the big theme is finding meaning in stagnation through connections and what fits that more than working a shitty job with friends#I’m kinda obsessed thinking about their office dynamics and how they differ in the circus#idk I have ideas I’ll get to later but for now the brainstorms shall stew#oh no this was supposed to just be a post hinting about my human designs I’m working on oh no#anyways character design is fun and I think my longer and gangle design are my favourite?? they’re the most unique I guess#well making jax a trash goblin looking guy is also unique but eh#it autocorrected kinger to longer oops#tempestmothtalk#why did I do this? idk man I need to yap somewhere

what's your take on braime?
with all the love in the world........ i don't have any beef with braimes i think it's a harmless ship! but i do think they have a tendency to, let's say, ignore all of the instances in which jaime is being very insulting at brienne's expense and pass it off as tee hee he's just so attracted to her! silly boy! and... yeah.... i find it kind of.... droll
but ultimately i think what makes the most sense for jaime's arc thematically is for him to die with cersei so that's what i've always seen as his endgame years before d&d shockingly did give me the very thing on screen

idk im glad they didn't give us any actual details about caleb and evelyn beyond belos's memories and like. fifty-sixth-hand information from masha's story so audience members not paying attention would at least know who they are.
whatever nitty gritty details the audience comes up with on their own for what happened to these two would be infinitely more satisfying to them than what the show would have been able to depict in a flashback. especially working within what's appropriate for children's television.
caleb the person isn't important to the story anymore. the MEMORY of caleb, which belos has never let himself get over in 400 years, is the important thing. and you don't need to know much about caleb for that to work. and while i loved the parallels between the wittebanes and hunter and luz, as well as the clawthornes being a descendent of evelyn, i'm glad they never confirmed it, and it remains situational irony purely for the audience.
hunter's only connection with caleb is his DNA, which also ties back to belos's feelings. him befriending luz is something they did of their own volition. it's not because hunter is fated to play out every beat of caleb's life by virtue of being his clone. similarly, while i love a good hunter clawthorne, dell taking hunter as an apprentice and eda showing care towards him in s2 are because eda is kind to children and hunter independently had passion for palisman carving. it's not because they found out they were related, because the whole show is about found family.
having flashbacks to the real caleb and evelyn wouldn't have contributed anything to the story aside from fanservice. what matters is how belos feels about them. belos's ego and the desperation to be acknowledged by his puritan community and God aside, the idea of caleb haunts his every action. not the actual ghost of caleb-i've already discussed here why the idea of caleb's ghost literally haunting belos would be a poor writing decision. belos knew the person his brother actually was, killed him, and imagined a perfect version of him that he chased after for the next 350 years.
the tragedy is that the perfect version of caleb is unattainable, and now belos can never get the real caleb back. he refuses to acknowledge that caleb may have been flawed before the influence of evelyn. to phillip, everything he thinks is wrong about caleb is because he was corrupted by the boiling isles, and that's part of the reason he starts on a quest to kill all the witches. it's also why he makes so many grimwalkers. he desperately misses that ideal version of caleb, so he makes copies of caleb and plays family with them.
and belos loathes the grimwalkers. he kills them because he hates the magic they were made with. because he hates being reminded of his brother and what happened to him. and of course, he hates the grimwalkers for not meeting his expectations of what his "ideal" caleb would have been like. it's a fluid expectation that belos, subconsciously or not, changes as he goes, all in order to take out his anger on innocent children. he seems to recognize his enjoyment of harming the grimwalkers, though it's unknown if he understands the reason-which is that the "perfect" caleb will never exist, and likely never did. phillip's brother is gone forever, and it's all his fault.
and idk maybe in the writers minds caleb was a perfect brother and baby phillip was just a possessive little shit. or maybe it's the opposite and caleb messed up a lot in communicating with phillip on his relationship with evelyn. maybe evelyn was a perfectly nice girl who was perfectly supportive of caleb and phillip's choices or maybe she hated phillip and the other humans and did convince caleb to leave it all behind. it's a fascinating piece of backstory and i love seeing fanworks that talk about it! but anything more about caleb and evelyn that the creators add in canon would give actual context to their situation that we don't need! their story has been over for 350 years and dont affect any of the other characters beyond how it affects phillip!
nothing more about these two can be said that will contribute more to belos's character that isn't already conveyed with the barebones material we got in the show. this story isn't about "forbidden love," this is about how phillip was confronted with the fact that his brother found happiness outside of him, and that someone he's been taught since childhood to hate may not be all bad. it's about how he plugged his fingers in his ears in response to this and went on a 350 year long killing spree to prove to himself that he can never be in the wrong.
basically, i wouldn't go so far as to call caleb and evelyn's backstory "purposefully unexplained," but i definitely think the story is a lot stronger as it is than it would be if they did explain it all. not every detail of a story needs to have a word of god answer as to how it all went down. sometimes adding in unnecessary detail for completionism's sake just distracts from the point you're actually trying to convey. while there are a lot of things that i wished the show could have explored in more detail had it not been shortened, caleb and evelyn's story is not one of them.

forty years later: do you think this one musical about a protagonist sorta yeehaw Musician who has to grab his guitar & run a winding path through the silent hill fog going "i'm pure of heart!" to try to save his wife imprisoned by [context: capitalism] wants what the other musical about that has
#respectively: a best musical tony winner of the past decade vs bloodsong of love#neither of which i've seen & i probably know a bit more about the former still lol but#a split of Disinterest vs Interest; Don't See How That Works vs Sounds Good respectively again lol#stylistically at least i'm sure they don't. if bloodsong doesn't feature kazoos at some point i'll go what in tarnation#endingwise alone? truly it is hdstwn found dead in miami on that one mayhaps (How does the myth ending have thematic meaning....)#rhetorical b/c i've seen it explained several ways like well if we're talking about Not Following lol#but nodding touching the cowboy hat brim if you do like it up close or from afar. Big Enough#just also throwing my hat in a perfect boomerang onto bsol's head (was standing right next to me) afaik & i know like. a fraction atm lol#yee've hawed your last. rodeo. lo cocodrilo at some point. the kazoos kick in; tensely#oh & i doubt Art reminding the bastard of the narrative about Romance (redeemingly) (anticapitalismly) happens in bsol but#i'm only pretty sure it happens in heightiestown & again only doubt it's part of bsol. maybe as setup for a Left Turn on the audience lol#& bsol has the power of [some things other than romance] in addition to [also the romance] so there's that. also afaik#you; keep talking &c#bsol#clarification just in case: my suggesting [they don't want bsol's style; i bet it has kazoos in there] is a) acknowledging the broad fact#that there Are style differences & b) is not at all indicative of my personal tastes / opinions about those styles#my kazoos prediction is on one hand neutral matter of fact & on the other hand positive matter of taste / personal assessment#eta: hang on why was i looking at the bsol pics on john simpkin's site going ''what's lo cocodrilo constantly holding'' & it's a kazoo???#i Have to have like heard & absorbed that from i guess some iconis interview at some point lmao like alright now#would revisit if i had the least idea which where when why how etc

have finished scott pilgrim takes off!!! i have many thoughts
#random thoughts#scott pilgrim#okay first off: where's stephen stills' boyfriend :[#like i get the main point of stephen and joseph's relationship is to show how self centered scott was#like one of his main friends had a whole gay revelation and got a boyfriend and he didn't even notice because he was caught up in his stuff#and since the show is a diverging timeline and they don't even end up recording the album for sex bobomb there's not really anything for him#to like. do. both plotwise and thematically#but cmon :[[[ i miss joseph he's such a bitch i love him#i still think matthew's characterization is a little questionable but overall i think he's an enjoyable character#the main problem i have with him is he has that chaturbhuja-inspired powerup because he's indian#but 1. him being indian never really influences his character or backstory beyond 'he was the only poc in school so i dated him'#and 2. none of the other characters have powerups related to their race or ethnicity? the closest i can think of is the vegan and veganism#is a CHOICE dude? and the whole 'he used his mystical powers to defeat the jocks' thing still makes it sound like his powers#are BECAUSE he's indian rather than just a part of the worldbuilding like the others#wait hold on back to joseph. wallace had his whole moment in the eighth episode where he met mobile#why didn't stephen and joseph get a moment :[[[#overall i like scott pilgrim takes off but i do think the weakest part narratively is scott himself#like the reason i like the og comic is because you get to see scott act all shitty and selfish and then you see him grow#like he represses and rewrites his own memories because he can't handle being a bad person#but in the show he disappears so fast and continues to haunt the narrative so you don't get to SEE him do anything bad really#yknow beyong cheating on knives with ramona which ramona never confronts him about#like in the comic that's a big moment which leads to her disappearing and their eventual reconciliation#but in the show they never really have any big arguments? beyond ramona doubting whether she should date scott in the eighth episode#their relationship lacks ANY conflict despite being the thing which incites the main conflict of the show!!!#plus they really damper scott's relationships outside of ramona to make it seem like scott and ramona's relationship is this big thing#to make it so ramona's pursuit of this guy she went on ONE date with make sense for plot reasons#like ramona's whole thing is running away why does she want to keep scott so bad??? obligatory sparks#maybe it's because scott's the one who did the disappearing. idk#anyway wallace was done dirty by the show. why'd they make him so mean to scott#in the comic he's scott's main enabler!!! he's the one who suggests many of the bad things which scott does!!!

this will only make sense if you've seen CritRole C2 but my feelings about the idea that Lucanis's arc within the bounds of the game should've ended in him making a decision about whether to accept the position of First Talon or to say no to it (and to Caterina) are similar to my feelings about the idea that Caleb's arc within the bounds of the campaign should've ended in him taking up a crusade against the Assembly and violently undoing it immediately

At times it doesn't feel like it#At times it feels more that instead of very conscious and intently weitten like that it was more a coincidence#derivative from the recurring themes and parallels in ideas roles character and situations that thread all the Flame Chasers together#and make of them a cohesive whole#But wow the parallels bwtween Eden and Kalpas specifically are so good#I've been thinking about them for days sometimes quite intensely#I haven't even reached that part of the story yet and still here I am#At this point the actual development of the story and the writing of these details is bound to disappoint me#It shines so beautifully in my mind and with such a particular glow#Like one of those cups or calices made our of seashells#I talk too much#I can't believe an idol and an alien are all I've been thinking of for hours now#Normally alien and idol are tropes I couldn't care less for#Yet somehow I'm invested#And somehow I am very invested in this lame ass man#I can't believe I initially disliked and found kind of disgusting then got very fond of a man with white hair with black details#and something over his face that has a lot of anger issues but is sort of very gentle in his way‚#fact that shows not only in his behaviour but even his preferences and hobbies#but nonetheless he is quite shy and detached from people with a few exceptions‚ a pink haired woman his closest most trusted person#and sort of friend but not quite but also deeper than that at the same time#And this has happened twice#I can't see Guzm.a without seeing Kalpas now and the other way round#They both sit the same way‚ wear short sleeved jackets over a t-shirt with a wide neckline‚ both are obsessed with destruction#and breaking things and the sound they make while doing that‚ both screan rude things all the time‚#both find pretty much everyone stupid and annoying both share a feeling of alienation and unbelonging#Both take care of a bunch of kids in a way#Guz.ma's ending in the manga may be my favourite writing in the whole history of Pokemo.n‚ and N exists!#Otto/Kalpas situation tbh I can't stand myself#Get a grip look at that very well written character with all the traits and thematic you most enjoy. What are you doing with this guy
