Since everyone is talking about Fanservice I'll add something -

Fanservice is an extension of parasocial relationship and all but I was wondering why people would gravitate to such things in the first place. Fanservice as a concept isn't new and it's not just queer. Het co-stars of Het shows have been paired together in the same way. People have gone to the same lengths all over the world. So it's not a BL / Asia / Queer specific thing.

What I've found over years of reading fans talk about their bias is these are projections of their real life desires onto someone who seems like they could handle it. Whatever any fan's reason for it I'm wondering, especially with the ones more involved in this fantasy, why is it that reality is unsatisfying. With BL especially I can see queers projecting. At the same time parasocial relationship's have existed long before mass media such as TV and radio were available. It was much less accessible and we might have lesser evidence of it but they have existed as long as humans have existed. But what I think has made this into a thing(tm) is 1) Accessibility 2) private life dissatisfaction 3) A want for something more.

And yes this leads to unhinged behaviors but I don't think discounting these people as crazy delulu fans really addresses why they are that way.

In my head I'm connected a bunch of different concepts from patriarchy to technology and progress. If you think about it religion is kind of like a parasocial relationship. But it's old, so we don't question it. Perhaps, given time, this would become the same.

But one ought to think as a person what draws them to certain people and why. Perhaps we won't be so quick to hate if we did.

I love hyping people up even if they don't think they deserve it. My boyfriend was telling me how he got 49th place out of 60 in a track meet and I'm like. The problem with authors giving characters unique names is sometimes they leave you with a random string of letters like Zlkajsdf, to the point that how, exactly, you pronounce it is mystifying and, instead, you just look for that vague pattern of letters and go "Oh, yes, that's Zlkasdfh" and move on without ever actually being sure of how to say it or whether it's still the same character.

"hello, i am here to talk to you about the incident from a few minutes ago, because i feel you might be unwell, and i am invested in your personal wellbeing." "thank you, i am unwell because the incident was hurtful to me due to my childhood, which was bad." I CANT!!!!

do you know how many people are mad that authors use "growled" as a word for "said"? it's just poetics! they do not literally mean "growled," it's just a common replacement for "said with force but in a low tone." it's normal! do you hear me!! help me i love you please let me out of here!!!

I just think everyone should take a moment to consider the question "what is your visual shorthand for cruelty?" and then follow it up with a critical "and who taught you that?"

specific examples include but are not limited to

why is an evil timeline character design disabled? (why do the heroes go through equally punishing battles and never lose an arm, a leg, an eye?)

why are the futuristic scifi terrorists uniformly darker skinned? (why are the heroes so much lighter?)

why is the greedy boss fat? (why are the heroes skinny?)

why is the criminal mastermind heavily scarred? (why is the brooding, traumatized hero unscathed?)

why is the predatory creep a bearded person in a dress and makeup? (why are none of the heroes trans women?)

who taught you that this is how things are?

how long do you plan on repeating it?
