every year when i make my annual post about buying an album on bandcamp i get a lot of enthusiastic responses along the lines of "so true fuck spotify we should all be buying physical media again! CDs baby!" and while I love this sentiment and I also love physical media I (in my late twenties) am really shocked at how quickly it seems like the shared cultural memory has forgotten about....mp3 files.... like remember iTunes? remember youtube to mp3? this was really not that long ago and yet it seems as though people now really think the only options are streaming apps and physical media. someone replied to that post and said "yeah and if you still want playlists, you can make cassette mixtapes." cassette mixtapes???? you can literally buy music files and integrate them into your existing spotify library. absolutely nobody needs to be making cassette mixtapes.

I got my first mp3 player when I was 13. I still have it. It came with 100 free downloads from a site that probably doesn't exist anymore. I downloaded 100 songs, and listened to them nonstop for two weeks. On day 15, every one of those songs "expired", and were no longer playable. That experience has been in the back of my mind ever since, and that's why I have refused to pay for anything digital (with a couple of notable exceptions), and every bit of media I purchase is a physical disc.
