not the biggest fan of PDA but will steal moments to hold your hand for just a second, giving it a little squeeze. for more physical reassurance, he loves taking his thumb and rubbing it across your palms and thighs.

he's hyper-aware of your surroundings whether you know it or not. if you're bending down to reach for something, one of his hands usually hovers over your head to make sure you don't hurt yourself on the way up. if he catches you shivering or sneezing for just a second then the next minute you're presented with a cup of tea and his demand for cuddles. you get the gist!

following up on the last point - whenever you get up from any surface, he always checks and dusts off anything that might cling to your bottoms or back.

sae is always out traveling and attending games, so phone calls are endless with him. even if the conversation has ended, there's something comforting about being on the line with him versus being in complete silence.

he is incredibly great with animals and that’s why you guys foster dogs together! it's no surprise for your neighbors to see the two of you walking an army of chihuahuas and german shepherds around the block every morning. it's also no surprise to everyone when he ends up adopting four of them; he claims no one can take care of them better than he can.

when it comes to washing dishes with shidou, he likes to make shapes out of the bubbles and blow them your way. this always ends up in a bubble-blowing battle that leaves the dishes to be washed the day after.

not really an extreme prankster, but what harm would an innocent sticky note on your back do? he likes to write jokes on them before sending you off to get errands.

gets abnormally invested in the drama in your social life. you tell him that one of your friends had just gone through a breakup? he's getting a bag of popcorn and already listing off questions pertaining to who's at fault.

if you ever need to move he'll be there to help in a heartbeat. not only does he have the muscles to help you secure all the furniture, but he has the brains to let you know how to stack the items and what equipment you need to keep them pristine and in one piece.

even if he claims it’s a bother, it’s not! he’s the type to fix your messy cable management and will replace anything that looks like it needs “fixing” in your house. examples include buying you new sponges for the kitchen, restocking your fridge if you’re running low on essentials, and folding your laundry if you’re the type to leave it in the dryer after it’s done.

he hates having his photo taken but knows that you absolutely adore showing him off to your friends. when you first got yourself a camera, all the film was practically barou, barou and you, and shirtless barou. it took a while for him to warm up to the idea but when you came home with developed photos in hand, he can't help but litter the fridge with his favorite moments with you.

definitely listens to cheesy boy bands when he's tidying up the place. he gets easily embarrassed about it so he usually waits to clean up the area when you're out before turning the music up to max volume. there was a rare moment when you returned early and a flustered barou claimed that he didn't know how 'boyfriend' by big time rush came up in his playlist.

surprisingly one of the best people to go to IKEA with - and no it's not because of the fact that he's part Swedish. he'll be the type to get into character whenever you guys go into a showroom, acting as if it's an apartment that you guys share. he’s cute but be careful, he’s the type to sneak items into the cart when you’re not looking!

gets excited whenever pull him into the living room knowing that you'll be announcing a fashion show from your recent mall run. he'll play along and hype you up, taking photos and telling you to give him 360 spins.

a chronic blanket hogger! he complains about needing a bigger bed because his feet keep dangling off the edges and that he needs the blanket the most. if you offer to sleep on the couch so that he can get more space, oliver will just pout and join you wherever you end up sleeping.

when you guys were touring for apartments, it was your job to keep the leasing agent occupied with questions while he was in the other rooms subtly scratching the walls with his nails to see if the paint would hold up.

yukimiya - home by luke chiang

never forgets to bring the mail in. a majority of the time, yukimiya will throw away the useless magazines and ads, but on slow days he likes to sit down and sort through coupons and tries his attempt with the weekly crossword puzzles with you.

there's always a different scented candle in every room you guys share. when they're running low, the two of you typically go to the store and spend at least an hour trying out all the different smells that they have to offer. a new seasonal and two of the regular scents are the final items he settles for.

he'll drive to your workplace to bring you lunch if you've forgotten it for the day. most of the meals he ends up buying for you are typically way healthier and out of your budget than what you would usually make for yourself.

keeps your side of the bed warm for you after you come back from a long day! yukimiya believes it's bad luck to get in a cold bed so he's doing his job as a good boyfriend.

karasu - summer by brockhampton

expect a lot of late-night food runs with karasu and they're all unplanned. you guys could literally be driving back from a date night in the city and he’ll just be like “I want McDonald’s” and just pull in a drive-through. sometimes he’ll do it if he wakes up in the middle of the night and can’t go back to sleep.

is a very good listener but not a good comforter (he's trying to do better in the long run). due to his usual snarky personality, he's worried that he might say the wrong things and usually says little to nothing. when you're crying, the best he offers is back rubs and a long cuddle session afterward.

working out together with karasu is like having your dad help you with math homework. he's critical of how your form should look, always saying that you might hurt yourself in the long run if you're not placing your feet or shoulders at the correct angle.

it's canon that he's afraid of the ocean and can't swim that's why whenever you guys are at a pool, he requires you to hold onto his hand - claiming that he doesn't want you to float away.

she is more than happy to give you her clothes, shes used to sharing and to have someone genuinely wanting her and to be reminded of her is something big

now she is a bit excited and suprised. she probably thinks you didnt mean to do this, and that your cologne/perfume accidentally rubbed off on the clothes she gave you, but its a happy suprise

is almost ashamed of how long she wears / doesnt wash the clothes. its comforting to know that you wore it, and lived in it, and was happy while doing so. she likes to have happy memories connected to her belongings, so this is meaningful

he sees you one day in his t shirt and laughs, he thinks its funny that you wear his stuff casually. out of spite, he may steal one of your tops and parade around in it like an ass, but he does love seeing you in his stuff

however when he sees you in his clothes, its semi-comforting. its almost nice because he feels like youre protected, a vibe of "they're mine". hes a possessive and protective man, especially after his son died, he has an urge for you to be with him, and this is a way for you to be 'with him' in a sense

loves to come up behind you and rest his chin on your head, rubbing your arms as he secretly relishes in the sight of you. he is a is a secret physical contact love language guy if youve been in the relationship for a bit, it comforts him to know that youre there with him

when you finally give him back his clothes, he unsuspectingly finds out they smell like your cologne/perfume as he was going to wash them (which he quickly stopped, putting them to his nose to confirm his initial thought)

a sprinkle of nsfw... he secretly brings the clothes you spritzed your cologne/perfume on to his bed, shutting the door before laying down, holding it to his nose and jerking off, reminiscing on how tempting you are to do this to him, he'll be sure to confront you about it.. after hes finished

jason has very.. limited options for clothing, but his mother taught him well, so he shares like a gentleman. he'll even put it on you, gently placing his coat on your shoulders, or sliding you into his loose t-shirt

it brings him soso much joy to see you in his stuff, hes happy to know that you love it too, that you love him. seeing that its a bit big makes him smile, its funny how you still wear it even if it doesnt exactly fit

flaunt the outfits to him and he'll worship you, thinking of how good you look and how hes going to be lending you a lot more clothes, especially if you like it. if youre happy, hes happy

when he gets the clothes back, going to fold them back up to put away, he gets a sniff of them, and to his surprise, they smell lovely, they smell immensely like you. at first he assumes its just because you wore it so much, but he does inside love how abundant the cologne/perfume is, he relishes in it

is veryyy happy to see you the next morning, in an even greater mood than before, hugging you and picking you up everywhere, something about you is just a pick-me-up for him

You and Maddy were not official, that was decided as soon as you first got together a few months back, however sometimes Maddy seemed to forget that, tonight being one of those nights.

You and Fez were at the party selling to everyone, it was quite chill and you were able to just have some fun for once.

You were walking over to the kitchen to get another drink when someone walked in front of you.

Cassie.

You’d sold to Cassie a couple of times, but she wasn’t really your vibe, there was just something off about her that you didn’t like, and chose not to interact with, but when it came down to business, you couldn’t really decline.

“He y/n” She smiled as she touched the top of your arm, slowly dragging it down before putting her arm back to her side. You raised an eyebrow, “what do you need Cassie?” You wanted to get this over with, you felt eyes burning into the back of your head, you knew you had more important things to do than make mindless small talk with Cassie.

“Oh nothing I just wanted to come over and say hi” she giggled as she looked into your eyes, it felt like she was staring right into your soul, but not in the way Maddy did it, when Maddy looked at you it felt like you were the only guy in the room, it felt like you were her entire world. fair warning also that ive forgotten almost all of looh by this point... i used to have a notebook with my ideas for the smau but i lost it during my last move so this is what i can remember. apologies if there are inconsistencies but i genuinely dont remember LMAOOO its been (8)4 years...

i can give you an idea of how i was thinking of ending looh... under the cut for the sake of people who dont give af lol

i do know for a fact that i planned jimin and y/n to be endgame. it was going to be a long process of "will they or wont they" because of jimins underlying insecurities and y/n's inability to introspect would always be a hindrance in their relationship

i know i framed y/n as like a "really good person" but she really isnt perfect. i was gonna lay more groundwork to "expose" her for some of the fucked up shit she did in the past (i forgor 💀) and i was planning on exploring her internalized "holier than thou" complex

that was gonna be the second main conflict after the whole jimin vs tae conflict... kinda like a season 2 lol

BUT BACK TO SEASON 1... tae vs jimin lol so yeah tae releases that slander video on jimin and he runs away... y/n is supposed to have a big altercation with jin and make him release a statement proving jimin's innocence... jin ofc says no and y/n + jimin (+kook on the side) have to figure out a way to improve jimin's public image

my initial idea was that he tries to pivot towards becoming a professional dancer and joining hoseok's crew... i was planning on introducing a new character (likely seungkwan haha gotta keep with the seventeen member cameos) who was gonna be like a PR manager... they'd make a youtube channel and post content about their dancers. not just their dances, but interviews, challenges, etc. just to "prove" jimin is the good guy or something.

on the side, the seungcheol/jeonghan/yoongi drama... yeah seungcheol gets dumped by y/n like an additional two times LOL and for funsies, jeonghan confesses his feelings for seungcheol to y/n (shocker) and its all very messy mwahahah (yeah they both end up sad in the end my bad). as for yoongi... OH BOY

so yeah he got rejected by y/n which RUINS his ego and he doesnt give up for a while. then he starts crushing on seungcheol (who previously had a crush on him lol) and it gets very messy but overall he gets called out on his power tripping ways and ends up alone at the end teehee (he was gonna get an epilogue scene where he goes to the club all drunk and shit and a younger guy hits on him but calls him "sir" after seeing his face properly lol)

as for jin/hoseok/namjoon... uhhh yeah 2seok dont end up strictly together... theyre both chaebols with fucked up senses of humor (they both enjoy playing with people like chess pieces) and jin gets super pissed when he finds out hoseok has been playing with HIM on the side. they have a heated argument that causes the collapse of bang ent (hoseok has more money/influence than him and essentially grabs the company off jin's hands) and BOOM friends to lovers to enemies to ???

oh and namjoon is there. uhhhh yeah he becomes jin's little puppet for a while. essentially namjoon spies on y/n for jin and breaks her trust. this further strains kook's mental state because he feels super guilty about everything. i was planning on kook being pro-joon and breaking y/n's heart, but i wasnt sure. it all depends on how i was feeling tbh LMAOOO sometimes i like making jungkook cry (all the time)

as for tae... yeah he wins LOL he's essentially the main antagonist (its not jin... surprise) but he actually succeeds in becoming a very popular pornstar. even when hoseok grabs the company, he keeps tae on their roster and tae becomes very rich. he continues trying to slander jimin but he eventually stops when hoseok forces him to stop (out of guilt? bribery? revenge? who knows lol)

umm back to jimin and y/n... yeah they get together blah blah y/n confesses first, jimin gets hurt a lot, y/n is bad at relationships (shes got bad interpersonal skills), they have a large argument where y/n accidentally dehumanizes jimin (ouch)... so many things. all that matters is that they do end up together... maybe not so happily, but they'll get there. i think.

SO YEAH THAT WAS SO MESSY idk how coherent this was... again like i said, i kinda write smaus on the go so a lot of these things arent necessarily canon. i only consider things canon when stuff gets posted, but again like u said thats probs never happening LOL but in the meantime, if u have more questions about any of the points listed above, lemme know!! i'll try my best to explain further (sobs i am so rusty at writing u dont even know) anyway blessings be upon ye!!

TALKING ABOUT THIS FIC!!! :] big ole ramble down below lol

(i use the word "partner" a lot here but just know i am not referring to strictly romantic relationships lol)

OHHH GOD. relationship writing advice HMM HMMMMM. it really is very complex bc there are SO many different types of relationships that can be written about ghfdgjh so advice definitely varies!!! i think something helpful that i've learned is that unless you are purposefully examining power dynamics it always helps to view both sides as fully realised characters. very very rarely do you want to have a character who is solely there to agree with their second half and have no personality or history outside of this. i see this happen a LOT with romantic pairings but it's also an important note for platonic pairings as well!! ESPECIALLY if the main focus of the story is on this specific pairing-- it shouldnt feel like one person is a human being while the other is a cardboard cutout whose only purpose is to be there for their partner. again there ARE a few exceptions to this and how it is portrayed but its the main rule i like to stick to!! :]

if i feel like ive written a character who is solely there for their partner something immediate i go to is giving both characters something that separates them!! most of the time this includes fleshing out a backstory thats different from their partner, that might influence the way they see things within the narrative. give them a different hobby, maybe a different friend group! give them a different perspective on the events that are unfolding, a different way of coping that might not be beneficial to their partner!! and remember that it is OKAY for them to not agree on everything!!!! do not be frightened into thinking you need every single relationship in your story to be perfect and unproblematic and completely agreeable, especially for longer narratives that call for conflict

OH AND IN REGARDS TO FANFICTION... piece of advice i try to follow is donttttt try to mold characters into entirely different people just so they can stay happy and agreeable with their partner lol. if theres tension theres tension!! if theyre petty then theyre petty!!!!! even if there isnt conflict and youre writing fluff, you dont have to erase their personalities just to fit them together as a happy couple! sometimes the challenge in writing comes from finding what happiness means for that specific character/pairing, and that may be very different from the typical idea of romance/happiness!!

AND NOW ON TO MAKOTO AND MIU first of all. i am so sorry for making you read paragraphs upon paragraphs of me just rambling nonsense at you GHFDKGSH BUT I APPRECIATE IT!!! and second of all this technicallllyyyy is advice i guess but its WAY more specific now!!! lol

anyways when it comes to writing their relationship most of their dynamic is based off of their differences! opddmh miu is brash and loud, and even though she is trying more and more to filter what she says she still speaks before she thinks and grows restless very easily. opddmh makoto on the other hand cant afford to be brash and loud and thinks quite a lot before he says anything, and is lot visibly calmer. so its fun examining how their differences are able to influence the other throughout the fic!!!! miu NEEDED that calming influence considering the state she was in when makoto found her, i quite frankly have no idea where the hell she would be now if makoto hadnt been so patient and understanding ghfdksghkf. makoto on the other hand is a man chained down by responsibility, so much so that his life has become extremely dull in his eyes just because of how repetitive it has started to become. miu is a serious change to this and offers him some kind of purpose while also reminding him of not only how SCARED he was as a teenager first exiting the simulator but also how unrestrained he had been before the years went by. theres a balance there!!!

but at the same time, there ARE some similarities. theyre both a bit paranoid, and even if miu is more willing to be vocal about her distaste theyre both scared of danganronpa as a company. they also both strive for some kind of peace, even if they have different versions of it-- makoto wishes to be unburdened by the weight of responsibility and his Ultimate Hope persona while miu wishes for stability in her relationships with others, even if she just isnt the best at it. its why i like writing small moments such as the two of them just sitting in the car and chatting or the most recent moment where theyre not talking at all but are still comfortable in each others company-- they dont explicitly tell the other that theyre super happy and at peace but they both subconsciously understand :)

POV – something that’s already happened, retold from another character’s perspective

first of all, thank you for this ask! <3 it was so fun esp since ive been playing around with this scene for a whileee

second of all, i got carried away! in my odesta longfic annie isn’t very happy about finnick wanting to be on the star squad so i chose to write the scene where he breaks the news to her in his pov. fair warning though this is so majorly long and at first i was only gonna include the last section but then i remembered nothing is ever that serious so here's like 3k words of angst + slight sprinkling of fluff at the beginning

with that being said, i feel like this one warrants some warnings: there's referenced non-con (for annie's capitol imprisonment specifically), hurt NO comfort (yet! there’s comfort in the longfic), and annie just overall isn't very fucking nice to finnick. so without further ado here it is under the cut

Finnick helps her tack the handmade sign up on their door. Since their fingers are laced together (they never intend on letting go, either), it takes a bit longer than expected. 

Finnick glances down at Annie, who is practically squirming out of her skin in excitement. The strap of her wedding dress falls down one shoulder. Her frizzy curls fluff up around her head like a wreath. 

“You’re so pretty, Annie.” He tucks a piece of hair behind her ear because he knows that’ll make her lean against his palm. He takes a moment to admire her, so kind and genuine and wonderful. Love and being loved by her feels surreal. Like the odds really are in his favor. 

Her eyes light up. He smiles.

“You’re pretty,” she insists, her hand inching toward his shoulder. He slouches a bit so she has an easier time hooking her arm around him in a hug. 

He takes this opportunity to sweep her off her feet, carrying her back inside. He’s rewarded with a giggle and a kiss on the cheek. 

“I love you,” says, sighing against his chest. Warmth courses through his veins. “We are so forever.”

And they call Finnick a poet. He ducks down to press a kiss to her hair.

Annie is love. Annie is life. Annie is forever. Permanent. 

“You and me,” Finnick agrees. “Forever.”

They seal the promise with another kiss.

Finnick’s concentration problems are catching up to him. Maybe they never left him alone in the first place.

He’d been training in 13 ever since he managed to shed off that hospital gown, but they weren’t teaching him anything groundbreaking. So, when President Coin tells him that she’ll send him straight to the Capitol if he manages to pass a series of tests, it’s an offer he can’t refuse. 

It’s not like he’s being cocky about it. He knows what he’s getting into. In the arena, there was always one guaranteed survivor. If he goes out on the battlefield—if he finally takes down President Snow—there’s a very real possibility that none of them will come out alive. 

That won’t be a problem for him. Again, he’s not being cocky. He just knows his strengths. He’s already familiar with hand-to-hand combat—real hand-to-hand combat, the stuff that people in District 13 can’t really train for—and that’ll make him a real big asset to the team.

Anyway. What was he saying?

Oh, right. Concentration problems. Training, too.

He remembers that he has to wake up early the next morning, and he remembers which room he has to report to. He even remembers to set his alarm clock for the right time. But then Annie comes back from her therapy session, and he’s enveloping her in a hug, and suddenly it’s like he’s only capable of conjuring up Annie-related thoughts.

She falls asleep in his arms. He wakes up to the sound of her cussing out his loud fucking alarm clock. He takes a moment to admire her fiery, effortless passion, ‘cause she’ll curse at just about anything if it’s early enough. 

“Sorry, my love.” He kisses her cheek to pacify her. She melts back into the bed. “I have to train today.”

“No, you don’t,” she says, which is mildly confusing, but then it hits him:

He forgot. He forgot to tell her. Something heavy settles over his stomach as he rushes through his explanation, but he already knows she’s not happy with him. It’s written all over the crinkle in her brow, the frown on her face, the small crinkles over her nose.

“Stay with me for a few minutes,” she says, so he does. Of course he does. He’d light himself on fire to keep Annie warm. (She does not ask him to set himself on fire.)

A few minutes turns into half an hour. Finnick is starting to get antsy, because if he misses this first training session, then they might just drop him from the program, and then he’ll never get to Snow, and—

“Finnick.” Annie’s voice is hard. Unhappy. His stomach twists. “Are you training today, or not?”

“I have to, my love.”

My love. My love. My love. She’s his love, so he doesn’t ever want to make her unhappy, but he’s not doing a very good job. She huffs at him.

“No, you don’t. The whole point of District 13 is that we don’t have to do anything. If you want to train, just tell me that.”

Yeah, Finnick couldn’t just tell her that. She’s already so upset with him, so he should just stay put and wrap her up in his arms, but he can’t. He doesn’t want to, either, but don’t you dare fucking tell her that, because the only reason he wants to go at all is so that he can take down President Snow. Then, they’d be free to do whatever they want whenever they want. A moment of torture away from her is worth a lifetime of happiness in her presence.

Annie understands that. She understands that they need to take down Snow, and she wants to take down Snow, but she also hates the military industrial complex. And Finnick would hate it, too, under normal circumstances, but how else was he gonna fight for his freedom? The Capitol took a lot from him, but he couldn’t wait to show them just how proficient he was at turning the odds in his favor. In the country’s favor.

Annie is glaring at him. He decides to stand his ground.

“I want to train.”

She blinks at him. Wrong answer. He tries to backtrack, but the damage has already been done. 

“I’m going to visit Johanna today.” Then, before he can ask, she adds, “Alone. You can do whatever you want.”

The pit in his stomach is overwhelming. He never planned on attending every single session—just the ones he needed to. Like the ones about assembling a gun (the arena never had anything like that). He also shows up to schedule a time for his exam.

“I’m a bit nervous,” he tells Annie. She glances over at him before promptly returning to whatever she was drawing, almost like she’s making a point to ignore him.

Almost. He and Annie don’t ice each other out. It’s not their thing.

“Annie?” he repeats. He knows that she was upset with him for leaving, but they already talked it out, and she already said she forgave him. If they're not okay, then he understands, but he just wants to be on the same page. It'll make trying to fix things much easier. “Are we good?”

Sometimes, Annie ignores him when she’s working on a drawing, but it’s nothing personal. She ignores everything—even her own appetite—but she usually multitasks whenever she doodles. 

She looks at him. Finnick lets out a breath. “Do you want to play a card game?”

He thinks about repeating himself—he’s nervous, and he wants to know if they’re good—but he doesn’t want to risk upsetting her again. It’s not her fault that he’s putting his life at risk.

“Okay,” he says. She grins at him. He forces himself to grin back.

“We need to talk about it,” he says, because they do.

She knows exactly what he’s referring to. It’s why she doesn’t answer him.

“Annie.” He sits right beside her. “I meant what I said. I’m not leaving you. The mission is still in the planning stages. We don’t even know which route we’re gonna take.”

She’s locked in on another drawing. He sighs. He can feel himself getting frustrated—he’s not leaving her, because he’s incapable of living without her—but getting snappish isn’t going to fix anything. Especially not with Annie. Her parents fought a lot, so he doesn’t want to risk setting her off. She’d never treat him that way—would never scream or throw anything at him—but she’s naturally very expressive, and that doesn’t bode very well for any of them when she gets angry.

She stares at him. He knows what she’s gonna say before she even opens her mouth. 

“Wanna play a card game?”

“Annie.”

“What?” she’s not yelling, exactly, but she’s being firm. Too firm, considering that all he wants to do is talk to her about something important. “Dr. Aurelius taught me how to play. It’s fun.”

“Can we talk about the mission?”

She makes a move to get up. He relents, even though he really, really shouldn’t, but he can’t stand the possibility of sleeping in separate beds tonight. 

“Never mind,” he says, placing a slow, gentle hand at her hip. He’s testing the waters. She dives straight into his arms. Thank goodness. “What’s the card game?”

“It’s a bit tricky at first,” she replies, reaching over to shuffle the deck. "But you're good at stuff like this. I think you’ll really like it, ‘cause there’s so much strategy in it.” 

Conversations about the mission were easy to avoid when they were still in the early stages of planning. The last time Finnick brought it up, Plutarch and Coin were still negotiating if they needed to add another member, but it’s an inescapable part of his life now. He gets the stamp, attends all the meetings, and introduces himself to everyone else on the team. They’re even calling themselves the Star Squad. 

They examine the holo splayed over the table, where everyone squints at a battlefield riddled with mutts and traps. It hits a little too close to home.

His gut twists. What’s he gonna tell Annie?

“Nothing,” Katniss answers, because apparently Finnick said that out loud. “That’s what my mother and sister will be hearing from me.”

Fair, but Annie isn’t his mom. Or his sister. She already forgave him for not telling her anything about the rebels, and he promised to tell her everything that he knows from now on, so he had to tell her about this. He had to, or else he’d make everything worse.

His mind is in overdrive throughout the entire meeting. Words usually came to him so easily, but things are different with Annie. He doesn’t love anyone or anything nearly as much as he loves her.

He decides to just play it by ear. The meeting already ran long, so he doesn’t want to keep her waiting. 

He steps inside their compartment. She was pacing around the room, but she stops dead in her tracks the moment he closes the door. She wrinkles her nose at him.

“I’m sorry.” He is. He’s sorry about a lot of things, actually, but maybe if they talk about it for a bit, everything will be okay. Annie loves him, so that’s already a huge source of comfort. “I’m sorry, Annie. The meeting ran long.”

He can’t tell if she’s giving him the silent treatment again—because that’s apparently something they do now—or if she’s just thinking of a response.

She frowns at him, obviously very unhappy, but they don’t have another choice. They don’t have time. If it took them this long to breach the subject, then that already means they’re in trouble.

“I don’t even care,” she lies, but Annie’s emotions have always been stamped so clearly across her face. And, right now, her face tells him that she cares a lot. “Let’s just go to bed.”

They can’t. They can’t. They can’t. He stands his ground, and she relents. He takes that as a good sign.

“District 13 is organizing a mission where we finally infiltrate the Capitol. And they’ve invited me to go.”

“Well, you’re not.”

It sounds final, they way she’s saying it. Finnick forces himself not to give in. He had to do this. He had to get to Snow. 

He stands his ground until she snaps at him. His heartbeat spikes.

“You goddamn fucking liar! You said you wouldn’t leave me again!”

He’s not. He never could, and he tries to explain that to her, but his mind goes absolutely blank. She’s never called him a liar before, but he supposes that’s the truth, isn’t it? He didn’t tell her about 13, but the Capitol captured her anyway, so she’s well within her rights to get upset with him. He just wishes she wouldn’t yell.

“You promised me you’d stay, but now you’re suddenly infiltrating the fucking Capitol?” she demands, which doesn’t sound right. “Did you make that decision before or after they locked me up?”

No. No, that doesn’t sound right at all, because that’s not what happened. He made that decision a long time ago, but whenever he’d try to tell her, she’d pretend that he wasn’t even talking to her. That hurt, but he didn’t address that concern with her—he’s not even addressing it with her now—because he knows that this must be hurting her harder.

Finnick can be cocky—even now, especially now—but he’s well aware of the risks. Nothing is ever guaranteed, and 13 is no exception. But if they both agree that they need to take Snow down, and if they both agree that Finnick dealt with the brunt of all his cruelty, then why aren’t they reaching the same conclusion? 

“So sorry, then, Finnick, that I’m not as important as your stupid fucking trident.” She’s angry with him. Finnick wracks his brain, trying to think of ways to coax her into liking him again, but nothing makes sense to him right now. Annie’s never yelled at him like that before, ever. “I bet the Capitol is gonna love seeing you with one again.”

“Don’t say that to me.” The implications of that don’t hurt. Finnick had thought a lot about that, too. The last time he had been so eager to prove himself to anyone was when he was enrolled at the Academy, desperate to show off his expertise at all the different stations. 

But this is different, both literally and fundamentally. And he knows that Annie knows that, so he doesn’t really appreciate being branded as a Capitol puppet.

“But it’s true,” she says, even though they both know it’s not, and Finnick doesn’t understand why she’s doing this to him.

He’s not an idiot. He knows that she’s worried about him leaving, just like how Mags left them, but he doesn’t like how she’s framing this like it’s a choice he’s making. Like he’s walking away from her. Like he’s engaging in something inconsequential for the sole purpose of hurting her. Like he doesn’t love her, when that’s the only thing in his life that he’s ever been sure of. 

Finnick doesn’t want to hurt her, but he understands that his intentions don’t match up with reality. He understands that she has the right to be angry with him. He understands that she’s upset about how secretive he was about the rebel plan, because their relationship was supposed to be built on a foundation of trust, so—

“Is that why I got captured, then?” she asks him, and she’s right, but she’s also not. The Capitol would have captured her no matter what, but he could have done more. He could have pushed Plutarch harder about rescuing her from Four. He could have encouraged 13 to execute their rescue plan a lot sooner. He could have neglected the rebellion entirely, because at least he’d know that Annie would be safe.

Finnick should have just done that. He got all in his head about how he wanted to be safe, too, but it’s not worth it to have Annie yelling at him right now. 

Moldy food. Capitol cells. Rape.

If it was hard to articulate his thoughts before, there’s no hope for him right now. He always knew what they were doing to Annie, even before she told him herself, but now that she’s not holding back—rape rape rape rape rape, just like how they raped you—he’s trying his best to just remain coherent. His memories in the Capitol were always so hard to suppress, but the thought of the same thing happening to her makes his body revolt against his mind.

Annie is always so sweet to him. Always used to remind him that nothing that happened in the arena or in the Capitol was ever his fault. But if she’s saying all this now—rape and pills and you let Mags die I stayed with you throughout everything never even thought about leaving you most miserable bitch I’ve ever met just fuck off and die already—

Fuck off and die? Isn’t that why they’re having an argument in the first place?

Finnick doesn’t know. There’s not enough oxygen circulating to his brain, and his heart is beating too hard to overcompensate for that, but it’s not like he can feel sorry for himself when Annie was in Capitol cells and Peacekeeper clutches and beatings and rape and all you did was sit here and wait for it all to be over, you fucking asshole.

“Stop pretending like you’ve ever cared about me!”

It’s the last thing he can remember her saying before they’re interrupted by a knock at the door. Maybe it’s someone complaining about the noise. It wouldn’t be the first time he and Annie received that sort of complaint, even though the circumstances back then were kinda different.

The thought of being separated from Annie still makes his stomach plunge to his toes. She’s saying a lot cruel things to him, yes, but it’s not like she actually means them, and it’s not like she doesn’t have a reason to be upset, and—

She grabs a marker. They both ignore the banging on the door, staring at each other instead, because what she does with that marker is going to predict the trajectory of their relationship. Her parents threw things at each other, yes, but they’re not her parents. He can overlook the yelling, but there are some things that he won’t even forgive Annie for, and this will be one of them.

She sets the marker down. The District 13 guards let themselves in. They start walking toward Finnick at first, but maybe they can sense that reality is very blurry for him right now, because they promptly ask Annie to remove herself from the room. She goes without a fight, but if there’s one thing about Annie Cresta, it’s that she has to have the last word. 

“I don’t know why I love you,” she says. “I don’t know why anyone would love you.”

The door closes. Finnick finally gives himself permission to melt onto the floor, curling his knees into his chest. 

I don’t know why anyone would love you. That makes two of them.

✄ what’s your editing process?

,,, yknow i dont think i really have one? like for oneshots and stuff i just sort of write it all down and try to see if it all Works for the character's POV and the story i want to tell. i try to break it up into segments so i can look over it piece by piece instead of slogging through the whole thing afterwards (cause i hate that and hating it makes me rush through it and that's how i make mistakes) but that's kind of it - for oneshots at least. for stories that i intend to keep adding to i want to make sure everything's followable, like character motivations and mental states and etc etc, so i go scene by scene and REALLY scrape over it. i have a bit in rbr4 that i've revisited at least eight times now because it's just not QUITE getting davey's motivations down the way i want. and then once i'm done analysing all those sections and fitting them together, i normally go to @rebuke-me for beta-ing just to make sure everything's flowing in an understandable way. i don't really do first and second drafts because i've already been drafting every scene bit by bit, so when i'm all done i just proofread as best i can and send it off to jupes if she's not too busy. unfortunately i do occasionally make some little mistakes (repeating a word or phrase too much, mixing up my metaphors, some small grammar stuff, etc) and i have a PROBLEM of getting too bogged down in little details that don't matter, but fanfictions a hobby, not a profession, and treating it like a profession is always what ruins it for me, so i prefer my casual editing process. it's not perfect, but i wouldn't be enjoying myself if it was.

✦ what was your easiest fic to write & your hardest?

ayyy this is. hm. probably 'matches' since it was so short, and i had the idea just kind of pop into my head fully formed. it's literally just one snippet of jack and davey's lives so it was pretty easy to get down. and the hardest is absolutely 'run boy run'. it's every single davey thought i've ever had written into a loveletter to my own autistic experience, which is... taxing, and on top of that it's a bit of a struggle to keep davey's motivations and character clear without projecting too much of myself onto him. but it's my baby and i love it dearly, and even if i don't get it all out perfectly it's still going to be my most treasured fic.

without a doubt this goes to the comment left by ao3 user 'tablesaltiv' on 'say you came on first (i think you came on fine)' - it's too long for me to feel comfortable putting it in this post, and honestly i'd feel a little vain even if i did, but it's probably the most reassuring comment i've ever gotten. i stopped writing fanfiction when i was around sixteen/seventeen due to a very VERY big personal spiral and didn't post any again until i was twenty. i was REALLY scared of posting 'say you came on first' because it was probably the most character-studyish thing i'd ever done before, and i was. very stupidly paranoid that i had completely misunderstood the characters and should just call it quits again - and then tablesaltiv left their very lovely comment saying that having seen the show live themselves, my fic felt entirely accurate. it was incredibly reassuring for me and filled me with a lot of confidence, and even though i know i'm never going to understand these characters FLAWLESSLY, i at least feel confident enough to think that i understand them well - and now i'm still here and writing a very ambitious fic that i'm worrying about a LOT, but i'm determined to finish anyways :) thank you tablesaltiv

when i started writing one way dream, i had planned for it to be my catch-all universe--one kind of adjacent to mirrors in that it had everything i liked in it. angels, demons, aliens, deities, battles, superpowers, supernatural stuff, friendship, teamwork...and also inspiration from medias i like such as sonic and dragon ball and inazuma eleven. maybe even pokemon idk.

but as ive developed it, its kind of become its own contained thing. it no longer feels fitting for it to be my catch-all universe. im starting to accept that its ok for this to happen bc i still love owd. but like. now i have to start over LOL i still want my catch-all universe!!

ruby suggested that i might be looking at a picture thats too big rn and thats why im struggling. she says i should break it down into parts and write it according to arcs, kinda like how inazuma does it--each arc has some wack crazy shit in it that all works together when you put them together but you dont have to think about the full story always. and i think thats a good piece of advice

sometimes i am a little sad that mirrors is a fanstory based in a media that i didnt create. bc then i cant say i really..made it 100% mine, yknow? :( the characters are mine sure but i based them in a premade media so do i Really own them completely..

i really want a universe i can throw any oc into and have them fit. superhero? done. alien? done. demon/angel? done. soccer player? done. monster hunter? done. BUT LIKE....that feels so difficult :( as much as i REALLY REALLY want to do it

thats a hard quastion but i love you for asking it ehmm its hard because i really dont know i just kind of look at art all the time and what people make and watch and experience and read stuff and 1 small piece of something inspires you until you collect enough small pieces to make 1 big thing. i get inspired by lots of stuff and tuck away whatever i like to use later or i just think alot. these days i dont really have very many OCs that are just "mine" anymore most if not all of them start off as fandom chars and i just make them more complicated until its not abt that anymore. audrey and delainey ar the only characters that i have these days that dont stem from fandom even laika actually is a fan character for my buddy henry's original universe. i like stuff i like what people make and i like that people make things and i like to dance around in them and make stuff up too YAY!

the idea for laika really only exists as it does because of the freedom of the universe theyre in, i wanted to make a character design that is complete nonsense and a premise that i like and think is fun without the restraint of grounding or rulesets, their entire being is based in "i think it would be fun if" and their design is entirely self indulgent. audrey is a different story because he is the oldest character i have and have had, he's gone through a variety of design changes and in fact did not even have a human design until i started posting him on this blog, he had existed for years and years before that. but also he is exactly like laika because he is my MOST self indulgent oc and i do whatever i want to him. having ocs is about smashing them together like barbie

okay about the art school au

tell me if you have any bright sparkling ideas for this au bc god knows i would eat them up. like i said before i know johanna is a graphic designer now but she has roots in illustration theyre like siblings. she leans towards children's books, making up stories and weird wonderful characters out of thin air. her work is also very botanical - her doodles in the show are full of winding plants and flowers. she could fill a page with dense undergrowth.

gerda is a student too but she's like that one teacher that just LOVES fonts. she is graphic design, product design, interior design, going back and forth between the computer room and the workshop to lasercut something or to build a weird chair. she could probably run a company marketing department at 18.

i also said kaisa is an analogue photography girl. she doesn't really care for most commercial photography she's like a man ray superfan and probably gets snotty about using digital cameras sometimes but loves to mess around with unconventional and cameraless methods. she might smell like chemicals. she doesn't want anyone close enough to be able to tell. she has always been an academic nerd and it shines in her artist research, drawing from the most conceptual artworks and fascinating herself with what there is to discover about them. she would love mike nelson.

edmund is perpetually covered in ink, of all colours, on his hands and his face. he's constantly workshopping prints of all kinds, one of his final pieces being a gigantic woodcut relief print depicting mythical creatures with lots of iconographic detail (think luke pearson's norse-inspired patterns o_<). he takes print room safety VERY seriously. do not put your hands or hair anywhere near the roller on the press. he will get you.

ive got like an outline idea for 6-8 chapters depending on whether i do it as a comic or writing? comics take so much effort for comparatively less story coverage so it would be a big endeavor but i would really love to have it all in visuals (also i'm not a superstar writer?) it's so difficult because some things i want to describe like in written word but some things i want to have visual 😭 artwork between paragraphs could be good but idk how cohesive it would be and it might be a bit jarring to suddenly be reading what you were looking at and vice versa.. that kind of thing works really well for a memoir like alison bechdel's fun home but not so much straightforward fictional story idkkkk... i can like see some panels in my head but i also want to do long descriptions and idrk if i want to mash them together. if i really do this it's going to take some PLANNING

victoria is still crazy but in a much more creative way. she loves to discuss everyone's work with them, she loves weird and experimental stuff. she likes to make elaborate and unconventional sets, props, and costumes for her colourful multi-media short films. she loves any art that moves, and makes great use of audio, sampling heavy thunderstorms pretty often.

Hello! I have kinda a longwinded question about fantasy dwarves, ive read your posts about the topic and id like to know if what im considering is distancing the idea of 'dwarves' from the real history of little people. I have a homebrew d&d world where ive created a fair bit of worldbuilding for a number of fantasy races, dwarves included. Everything you were saying about fantasy dwarves makes total sense, and I dont want to perpetuate that, so I'd like to change my homebrew setting to be more respectful of LP and their history. Is changing the name and physical characteristics (i.e. Not having the species called dwarves, not having them be small humanoid mining people, etc) and including fleshed out characters with dwarfism in other races enough to distance this from real little people?

Or, is there any piece in your wardrobe you really love/ are proud of? I dont alter too much of my clothing but i always treasure finding a pair of pants i can reasonably take in and make work for me! Hello! Thank you for these questions ^-^ I've noticed that a lot of dnd players and world builders are working to create more accepting settings for their players, which is a great endeavor for the world of fantasy.

Solid question - I think that the only real way to distance real little people from fantasy "dwarves" is to drop the made up race all together, which you would already essentially be doing once you stray from the necessary characteristics that draw the parallel. Basing a made up race of beings off of a marginalized community shouldn't be happening - full stop. And it shouldn't be missed. Yes, freely include little people in the fantasy genre, but don't use their bodies to mystify them. Don't turn them into a class other than human.

And removing "dwarves" as a race classification is really just a drop in the bucket. Include real little people in ALL genres outside of fantasy. Create positive representation. Use media as a means of destigmatizing and romanticizing bodies like mine, and step outside of the written word; Fight for equality for real life little people, and by extension the entire disabled community. Take stands against inaccessibility, workplace and medical discrimination, healthcare inequality. Educate yourself on spoon theory, take up sign language, question the nature of the world we've built in the same way you do regarding gender, sexuality, race and mental illness.

Thank you so much ^-^ well I'm a really big fan of earth tones and mixed patterns - lots of browns, greens, blacks, and mustards. I love finding things that I don't have to alter, but when I must I like to adjust sleeves - skirts and dresses are a bit more work. Currently my favorite garment is the skirt seen in the top left photo (description: knee length polyester skirt that sits at high waist, black with diagonal matte gold stripes) which I love to pair with both green pallets and red and yellow pallets. Mostly I love to have a lot of witchy fun with my clothes :)

What's your favorite and least favorite part of animation?

oh cool! thanks for sticking around for so long :) honestly, if you've been following me for some time now it might've been either bc of my fanart, oc art, or both haha

thats a big question which prompts for a big answer so here's me rambling about it below B)

when asking fave/least fave things abt animation, its hard to answer without getting in depth on a variety of things LOL. animation, as a medium and field, is very nuanced with its own concentrations so its kind of a disservice to not recognize those areas esp when the skills u learn have a lot of overlap on how it improves other areas of study

i had practice in some 2D/3D ani, storyboarding, visdev, 3D modelling. here's my general experience with all of those:

2D

fave: figuring out how movement is created, rough animation stage, analyzing and figuring out timing/spacing, esp love the fact that you are creating motion, not pretty illustrations to gawk at, seeing the entire ani come together at the end feels very rewarding

least: cleanup and colors lol, feels very time consuming. if im gonna spend time making lines clean, id rather do that with an illustration piece

3D (in maya)

fave: can rely on the program to do the heavy lifting while you do the keys and adjustments, doing 3d actually enhanced my understanding of how the body moves in motion and space and where drag, follow thru, overshoot could be applied in both 2d/3d

least: i dont get to draw :( majority of my experience in the adjustment process is looking at a mass nebula of graphs and figuring out where i fucked up or smoothing out areas and fixing it. prefer 2d since i can just redraw what looks wrong vs scavenging thru multiple graphs. also modelling the key poses can feel like it takes forever vs drawing it

storyboarding

fave: creating strong, key story beats, keeping drawings rough when possible, shorthanding drawings, researching reference for shot compositions + studying them

least: can be very hard figuring out how to fill in the gaps between certain beats, easy to become uninspired/uncertain abt a sequence drawn

visdev

fave: seeing the final piece come together, figuring out composition, blocking in values/shapes, character design, research phase/looking for references and creating moodboards

least: i hate doing backgrounds lol. complexity affects how much i'll end up dreading it. personally not a fan of working on pieces for very long. im also not a fan of constantly doing paintings/bgs as a job

3d modelling (in maya)

fave: painting the model and texturing it, uv mapping and arranging it

least: the modelling part. fuck up 1 part and you fuck up the rest, you'd have to restart from square 1 or be lucky enough that you had a previous save before the fuck up. a proper process matters a lot in saving yourself the pain and headache from fixing everything (i redid a model that i worked on for 3 wks 4 times bc of my fuck ups)

overall, as a field of study

fave: its fun getting surrounded by others who can talk the same language as you do. ive always wanted to be around people who can get as hyped up and excited over discussing and analyzing story and animation, since i didnt have that with some of my other friends or family members. i've also been able to build proficiency in variety of programs too, which is useful. working in a team project is fun if you've got the right kind of ppl and that makes the experience fun when you the project finished. i've worked on various short films for rough animation, and i always love seeing the final film/composited shot and going "i worked on that part!! look at how nice it turned out with the rest of it! whoever did the [cleans/colors/compositing] did so good!!" i think my biggest satisfaction in this field is understanding the why and how something works (i.e. why/how does this animation effectively sell its movement? what makes these boards convey strong story moments? what about this composition is so appealing? why does this story beat matter to the rest of it? why do i/what makes me care about these characters?) it can easily deter people, but this field's a huge time commitment and youre constantly evolving your own craft. it doesnt come easy to everyone, but when you start seeing your own mileage, it feels very rewarding and pays off

least: industry's hard to get into lol, its kinda like that no matter where you go and once youre graduated, the time you spend in limbo is primarily working on your portfolio and catering to studios you wanna get into. its also easy to get the impression that being a "somebody" and maintaining a reputation matters to just increase your chances and connections of getting a job. that shits hard to deal with when youre not the most extroverted person on the planet, and even if your classmates do know you, are you gonna be the one that they end up talking about constantly or regarded highly a lot? names spread within circles, and it can feel like a competition to just get yourself known. its very easy to beat yourself up over seeing other people's work too. we're desperate, we're starving, we want our work to be acknowledged and validated, we want a job that satisfies our creative needs.

this field is incredibly demanding and its more than just having fun and drawing pretty pictures when much of it is a collaborative effort for a project. the disciplines you learn will majority of the time, without a doubt, will be applied for a larger team. at the same time, what you learn has overlap into other areas too which is always fun when you have this moment of "holy shit, i get it now"

How do you come up with super pretty design and fur patterns??

ooo this is such an open ended question theres a lot i could say ill ramble more abt more technical n specific tips under the cut, but honestly my biggest tip would just be to like, look at so much fucking furry art. looking thru other ppls art n character design is both rly fun and literally studying for ur own work. i mean id recommend looking at char design both furry and not furry in general cuz its all useful stuff and rly good to get like a diverse variety of shit to live in ur brain u can take out as insp or little things here n there for ideas for ur own design when its useful. looking at actual animals of all types and species is also useful, lots of cool patterns u can find that way and for some design in particular i will primarily be using markings similar to actual animals ive seen (at least like for example the concept of a darker mask of fur that goes under the eyes a certain way, etc). canines and felines in particular have a very very wide variety of markings u can use as inspiration. other animals too but those tend to be popular w furry art n design n r some favorites for me personally lol

for me its like, a lot of practice to get good at furry art and furry character design specifically, like pretty conscious effort since i was a kid cuz thats what i was interested in and those were the artists i admired and found as big inspiration and wanted to draw like. and ofc i am still trying to improve n learn more myself! so id say to start like.. a lot of practice, ofc looking at actual animal markings cuz u can get a LOT of good ideas that way, and big time: studying other ppls art and character design. u r never looking at other ppls art Too Much u r learning when u r having fun doing that

looking at a wide variety of dif furry styles w furry design in particular is pretty useful, especially when theyre all made for dif purposes; fursuit design vs designs for comics vs furry adoptable designs vs designs created to be animated (’animator friendly’ designs), to name a few, all r serving dif purposes n have dif goals n dif reasons for why they look the way they do.

on a more technical level of How i come up w them/make them, i sat w this one for a bit n here r some ideas i wrote down. i was trying not 2 ramble but u asked the autistic guy who is very interested in and passionate abt furry art n character design so <3 many thoiughtz under the cut so its not massively long

first is that i fuck around a LOT before i settle on smth. slap colors on shit and take colors off. if ur drawing digitally and u have a program w a filter -> color adjustments option like sai 2 u can mess w hues n saturation to get combos u never wouldve thought of without that bonus help. i tend to start working on colors/markings w digital (while i may do preleminary traditional sketches of what the character could look like before colors) cuz its way easier to test smth out and then undo it if u dont like it on digital lol. and even w how i tend to try many dif things i test around before i decide on smth i like, i always keep open the possibility that this design (if im using it as an oc) is open to being changed in the future if i find smth i like more w them

getting attached to pieces of a design and wanting to build around that is great cuz its how u figure out what u like and what is important to u w this design/character, but whats also important is being able to recognize when smth just isnt working (at least the Way ur approaching it, or maybe the character ur trying it with, etc) and u need to try a different track. u can always keep that trait u rly like and want to put on a character and just rework it into a dif design later, i do that all the time! just be content with some designs maybe just taking more time to come together and thats cool too, u need time to stew on ur thoughts n try things in ur brain b4 u test them in actual art sometimes (i mean, for me at least). sometimes u just need to sit on a character design for a while and try a lot of things before smth Clicks. at least for me! sometimes its very easy to design a character and figure out markings n stuff but other times it takes me a lot of attempts and building up a design w new ideas i am getting along the way. maybe i realize this particular design trait is cool but just isnt working on this character/design so i file it away on the backburner to test on a new character later till i find a design (or oc if i RLY like it and want to draw it a lot) who it DOES fit. 

i have a pretty big stock of inspiration n ideas i have in my brain bcuz i have been autistically obsessed w furry art and improving at my own since i was a kid so i just have a lot of Interest in this stuff and have a very big like.. amnt of shit to draw from i think? again, padding out what u have to draw from in ur brain in the first place. u could also save character design insp somewhere and look thru it before u start working on a design urself, i do that sometimes! it gets the creative juices flowing for me to look at art i admire and feel inspired by before i work on my own. do stuff to get urself inspired or ur brain working in that direction, whatever way that works for u, u know urself best w it

i often keep notes of little ideas i have or things i want to try so i can try making a character design around it later, i have always loved making characters and character design so i dont rly have problems w lack of ideas or anything, its smth u just work on and if its fun u keep working on it! as a kid id do stuff like, just look thru lists of animals and then just make a bunch of furry designs for those animals, or do stuff like assign colors or plants or elements or whatever animals and then make Furry Versions of those. that was entertaining to me and how i had fun. this kinda stuff is still good practice (emoji randomizers r fun to make character design from, for example). 

when im stumped w my own design or looking for new ideas to try that may click better, or when i just need a break cuz i definitely am not drawing all the time, i take a break from drawing and go back to looking at lots of art, aka, STUDYING <3 read comics, watch movies, etc too, whatever ur interested in and inspired by. i think a lot abt my own designs n ocs n stuff i want to draw and ideas i might use or like (or things i dont care for or am that interested in that i think ‘how can i implement that in a way that i DO like in my own design, how can i make this become interesting to me’) while im like, just living my life and seeing outfits and seeing palettes and seeing other ppls work n stuff, not JUST when im drawing. im playing around w ideas in my head before i actually draw, this is smth u probably improve on with just like, time and practice and gaining the ability to gauge if smth is worth trying before u actually draw it. again i cannot stress enough how important looking at a lot of other character design is; both what u like and what u dont like is going to be internalized and is going to be rly useful for making ur own designs. look at a lot of different art styles, look at how other ppl design characters. know that character design is something u can absolutely improve on, its not like, a talent some ppl have and some ppl dont, some ppl just r going to be more passionate abt it and WANT to spend more time on it and improve Because of that. 

back to colors! the good thing is palettes (and well everything else abt designs) r super dependant on what u personally enjoy so theres not rly right or wrong ways to do them. liek if someone asked me for tips on how i personally often create palettes for characters Right Now i could think abt it and try to pick up patterns w my own art and then explain my like thought process abt it to ppl, but thats just what i personally like doing right at this moment, and that changes! u have a lot of room to just have fun. rly look at character designs n palettes that r RLY speaking to u and figure out whats working abt it for u or how u can incorporate how much u love how that artist uses colors n palettes n what theyre Doing there to make it work into ur own work. fun studying!

now a more personal one: typically (not as a general rule but often) my oc design is built to be drawn repeatedly and not be overwhelmingly complex to me.  the goal is to get smth that looks good and interesting without actually being difficult for me cuz i know myself and know i wont draw a character thats too complicated for me lol whether id get bored or intimidated by the idea of just having to draw a whole complicated fuckin thing when i just want to doodle. for me, this means i tend to pull a lot of character design tips i learned from animation. ‘animator friendly’ kinda stuff, BUT i can typically afford to be a little more complex bcuz im not animating them. im not sure if this is still common but when i was growing up ‘good furry designs’ at least w the artists and other kids i was hanging around were often considered what was the most complex and cool looking over what was actually like, replicatable and feasible to draw consistently without spending a lot of time coloring. stuff that would make having to draw that oc for someone in a commission a complete fucking pain, but sure looks cool as a finished product so u Get why ppl go for those. but personally while i like seeing those designs i know myself and probably wouldnt buy one of those adoptables for that, cuz i know i woldnt draw it enough lol. i enjoy em and can draw some for art fight but as my own oc’s they probably wouldn’t like.. fit my own needs? i may have a much easier time drawing them now bcuz i have drawn furry art and furry character design for a long time so i can figure out what im looking at easier, but it probably wouldve overwhelmed me quite a bit when i got started (been too long for me to remember lol). and thats good to know, its good to be aware of what u want to be drawing and figuring out what kinda stuff YOU like. 

adding on from above but that paragraph got long: of course having designs that r rly complex is a lot of fun n stuff im not saying dont do that im saying for ME personally a lot of my oc design tends to be centered around ‘what do i know /i/ will be capable of drawing multiple times without getting either overwhelmed or bored’. so thats a thought for me w my own designs. i also often make designs that i plan on using for like comics or smth later so i do want the design to not be terribly hard to reproduce if im planning on ‘this character is gonna be showing up quite a bit and i dont want to put a ton of work into every panel’

i will also say that like personally while markings r definitely important i DO try to mix design traits thru a more Character Design lense with a Furry Character Design lense. what i mean by that is its good to expand ur Character Design ability in general by paying attention to drawing differing body types and proportions, face shapes and like cheek/chin/etc shapes/fluff, nose and eye shapes, hair style and hair texture, etc. furry adoptables focus on creative and interesting markings on a base to make the character stand out from other wolf guys. which is also very useful to be studying and getting inspiration from for sure! i enjoy those often complex designs for sure. but for me personally i do try to take the approach of diversifying w designs (particularly w my own ocs), cuz its fun and cuz its pretty necessary when ur talking abt like, Character Design.  even as someone who often puts a lot of design traits i Know i like onto many of my ocs (mohawks <3 muscles <3 etc) like w character design its important that ur characters would not all look completely the same if they switched clothes or palettes or hairstyles yk? even when putting ‘buff’ onto multiple chars of urs cuz u just like that and drawing muscles theres many ways to make a character muscular on a lot of dif body types and proportions, for example. and while there r parts of the making these characters all look different that may b harder w furry character design (like u got all these wolves and now u gotta figure out how they all look different beyond just colors!!) its definitely still like, Necessary to me personally! i assume u were asking more abt like fur patterns rather than this kinda stuff but i would recommend u think abt that when designing characters as well, its fun and it will definitely improve ur own work in general! and it is rly necessary to practice things like a wide range of body types and hair textures n styles. it will make u a better artist overall.

look at tips from ppl who do professional character design, whether its furry artists or ppl who work with dif types of media (movies, tv, comics, video games, etc). a wider knowledge base never hurts! i have always rly personally valued tips from ppl working in the animation industry so i think thats like one of the primary ‘tutorials’ i paid more attention to and integrating from +as well as my history as a furry artist and what furry artists tend to like and consider ‘good’ character design. it just tkes a lot of fucking around n building up stuff u can draw from. and ur taste will probably change with time and as u improve. theres a place for everything and ur eyes will get better at figuring out what looks good paired together, to u, over time. u can also get great ideas n tips n inspiration from artists of all sorts of skill levels of course! 

anyway i hope this helps at all or answers ur question in some capacity, im sure theres stuff i missed but theres a lot of Words here but thats cuz i dont like.. think abt this stuff very consciously so it sounds more complicated when u write it out vs just doing it, which starts feeling more like second nature when u improve at it. i rly appreciate the compliment btw im always flattered to hear ppl like my designs!

yeahhh im not as big of a fan of small text on desktop bc it's hard to read, even for me so i plan on fixing them once i get on my PC sob ALSO AAAAAA im always in the mood to talk abt honeyworks tbh and since it's a little too big to explain, we'll focus on the funky little dudes in my carrd. they're known as lipxlip, a virtual idol unit produced by honeyworks! the two of them are shibasaki aizou (voiced by nobunaga shimazaki) and someya yuujirou (voiced by uchiyama kouki). when they debuted, we only knew their first names so the fandom collectively refers to them as aizou and yuujirou. you can find their songs on youtube along with the MVs!

anyway onto them exactly, onstage and in front of their fans, they act as personality foils for one another, with aizou being lipxlip's "sun" as he's more passionate, friendly, and warm, and yuujirou serving the role of the "moon" by being more calm, polite, and cool...or that's how they act onstage at least. spoilers for literally everything under the cut bc i cannot shut up even if i tried

anyway actually they have very different personalities outside their stage personas, with aizou expressing immense discomfort around women (he has his reasons i swear) and being known to lash out without filter, meanwhile yuujirou's easily annoyed and looks down on others. i like to say they have a signature glare and glower for everyone they meet underneath the idol personas. anyway, despite this, they're genuinely good people, with both having a soft spot for their friends, and they consider each other their most important person. (they have..so much romantic connotation in every song and have paralleled a canon couple and yet *shakes visibly* honeyworks give me aiyuu i beg).

onto why they're like that, both of them have terribly messy family situations, with aizou's mother being heavily implied to be abusive as well as constantly with different men—adding to his brother going through a playboy phase (he got out of it and he and his girlfriend are the canon couple that aiyuu parallels), all of which resulted to aizou being uncomfortable around women for long periods of time. yuujirou comes from a family with a great history in Japanese Theatre, specifically Kabuki, and wanted to become the successor to his stepfather's brand but was rejected as the heir due to them only marrying into the family. his younger stepbrother, koichiro, thinks very lowly of yuujirou and considers the fact that he'll be the heir to the family brand something to brag about, as it was something yuujirou himself wanted.

anyway their pasts are Bad™ but eventually they found solace in becoming idols, and despite their protests, were placed together as lipxlip. their partnership is genuinely beautiful because yes, they're little shits, yes they yell and fight and throw insults without question, but they care about each other and each other's dreams, they know the limits on what to poke and tease and regardless of what becomes of them, they do actually have each other's back. aizou will always be the only one who can match up to yuujirou, and yuujirou will always be the only one who can match up to aizou. they're each other's halves and that's the whole point of their relationship. being broken and finding the pieces to fix each other.

also the guy in my current theme is also from honeyworks! he's from lipxlip's senior unit, Full Throttle4 (shortened to FT4) and the character is IV (pronounced as ibu, read as the roman numeral 4) and if you think lipxlip's backstories are sad these guys are getting a one way ticket to therapy from me

wat r ur thoughts on frontiers so far??? i havent been 2 invested in recent sonic stuff but im watching a live playthrough and the atmosphere is sooooo cool it def seems like a step in the right direction 4 the series XP

OMG LITERALY ITS SOOOOO GOOOOD sum aspects kf it reminds me of unleashed which is awesome 2 me cus rhats one of my faves… i dont pay much attention to actual gameplay in sonic i mostly like the storys and characters but frontiers is supeeer fun and i love being able to explore and do the challenges and the stages are pretty cool too … im not the best at them thiugh…. Seriously ive been talking myselr so much about how much i adore it its like they made a game just for melina i never play video games but this is so so fun to me. I was kind of confused at first tho ill be honest it is overwhelming with how big the islands are (im on the second one right now i forgot its name:P) but ithink im getting the hang of it its SO FUN EXPLORING SOOOO FUN and i like how sonic even mentions he likes how muchcroom there is to explore … omg the characterization im not too sureabout for amy i dont know if its her voice or what but THAT IS NOT AMY ROSE! I always get sad when she is written as more mature i miss 12 year old amy…She is so sweet though i still love her forever.&knuckles is so silly i love seeing sonic knuckles interactions OMG jusy so happy to see sonic characters talking to eachother and being friends i LOVEEE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!! Also sage js so interesting i have no idea what is going on with her i didnt keep up with anything about the game before it released cus i didnt want spoilers but i like her. Very interedting veeeery interesting i like how they bring back phantom ruby stuff(i assume) along with lore established in sonic adventure i think it really ties the world together in a way i always craved im so hapoy they are building more on chaos and angel island and master emerald lore seriously … ALSO I LOVE THE DESIGNS FOR ALL THE CREATURES SO MACH OMG the koco are adorable i want keychains of them and in the second island the enemies are so sick oh mai god . … the little kocos true old form or whatever look like chaos mademe go nuts i got so excited i wonder wat it allll meaaansss…. Hopefully i will FIND OUT! Also the msyic so badass im so hapy after i finish the game i know i will be listening all the time its just too good>< i love how huge the game is too and there is socmuch you can do in it if you want to. Also im super into the weather and time changes i think it is so cool but makes you think sonic is staying awake for days and in the rain so gross he needs a shower .. I HAVE SO MUCH MORE TO SAY THANK YOU FOR SENDING THIS ASK I HAVE BARELY TALKED ABIUT IT TO ANYONE Nothing beats sonic adventure though🤷‍♀️lets be real.actually i miss sonics adventure attitude wah but i think in frontiers it is kind of saying they are older and not so much kids anymore which could explain why amy is like that… still not into it personally but i always think its interesting to hear them acknowledge past events.okay im done.okay. ITS JUST SO COOL before it came out i kind of thought i would not apply anything in the game to how i view the sonic world in my head (cus thats how i feel about sonic forces LOL i just ignore it) but its surpriseing me how much i like it i havent liked a sonic games  world building this much since sonic unleashed ... still i dont think frontiers will be like the basis of sonic for me but it gives super intruiging bits and pieces that i will hold on to forever in my brain. OKAY.i played at schol today in my math class its so hard playing in public cus i need to chill💆‍♀️OKAY IM DONE. okay but also like for me i usually dont really care much for new sonic stuff i like the old stuff wayyyy more but i agree this game is like a huge good step for the series GAH OKAY
