These aren't exactly on-time, but for Father's Day I did a whole bunch of doodles of experiments interacting with Jumba ! All of the experiments were requests in a discord

I also really hate how his teeth are designed too and no one’s talking about it. It’s the first thing that really popped out to me. They bend inward abnormally. They’d be so uncomfortable when you close your mouth.

Creatives have always fought to have representation in their projects. Even under a company like Disney, if the team has something they want to show, they'll find their way around whatever the suits and sales execs forbid (especially for non-theatrical releases/media, where they might be able to get away with a bit more).

It got me thinking about an episode of Lilo & Stitch: The Series! that I've mentioned before, the one about Pleakley's family wanting him to settle down with a wife. I thought about this episode specifically because Jumba and Pleakley may have been shipped by the writers through bits and jokes and one-offs throughout the show, but in this episode they really tried to do the most official, "We ship these characters," as they possibly could without actually getting in trouble with the higher-ups.

Here's the setup for the episode if you're unfamiliar:

Pleakley's mother wanted him to finally marry a girl, or else she would find a girl for him back on his home planet. Pleakley ends up lying to get out of the arrangement, saying that he already has a woman he's engaged to on Earth. Just a minute later, when he answers the door, he realizes he's only made the situation worse: his family's there on the doorstep, saying they immediately "hopped a wormhole" to be there before his supposed wedding day.

He begins to stack lies on top of lies and claims that Nani is his bride-to-be. Nani is only convinced to go along with it after being reminded that, if Pleakley left, the only remaining adult to supervise Lilo would be Jumba.

Both Pleakley and Nani don't enjoy the charade they have to put up with for the next few days. Nani begrudgingly plays her part up until the actual wedding day, where she finds out that a real ordained minister was hired, meaning she would be legally married to Pleakley, which is where she draws the line. Nani refuses to be a part of the lie any longer and leaves just before the ceremony begins.

Here's where the Pleakley/Jumba stuff begins (and where the creative team had to start tiptoeing around what would force a rewrite from the execs):

Lilo convinces Jumba off-screen to take Nani's place. This way there's no need to write any kind of "ew no I don't want to" joke or have Lilo bribe him or something of the sort to get Jumba to do it. We don't see or hear Jumba's thoughts when he would supposedly be told that he is legally marrying Pleakley. This way the writers are neither confirming nor denying anything about Jumba being interested in Pleakley or not.

During the ceremony, Jumba doesn't seem put off by it all. There's no gag that he thinks it's gross to be married to Pleakley, or is "only doing it" because Lilo said he has to, or that he wants to be the groom instead of the bride, or anything like that. When asked for his name, he does claim to be "Jumbina," but that's most likely because Pleakley's family specifically wanted him to marry a girl (and are a very heteronormative bunch; if Jumba walked down the isle as a second groom, they would've been just as upset as if they found out Pleakley wasn't actually engaged). Regardless, I'd say Pleakley looks content-enough that Jumba's the one walking down the isle instead of Nani.

When the minister then asks for the vows, the audience is only given a single line from Pleakley: "Dearest, the day we met, I couldn't take my eye off you." As he says this, the genetic experiment of the episode -who happens to be a lie detector experiment- starts beeping loudly, meaning that was a lie. Which actually makes total sense. That was a lie. If you go back to the day they met, Pleakley was being brought to Jumba's prison cell, where Pleakley was told he'd be shipped off to catch a deadly experiment with this criminally-convicted mad-scientist he just met. These two were absolutely not a case of "love at first sight." I mean, when Pleakley first saw him, Jumba was crazily ripping up and stuffing newspaper into his mouth.

And that's the ONLY vow that we get to hear either of them say at the wedding. The writers explicitly made the ONLY vow a false one so the lie detector could buzz at it. Jumba and Pleakley don't say anything about how much they might actually love each other, because then the writers would be forced to make it a lie so they wouldn't get in trouble for suggesting that the two male characters have feelings for each other. If it was all just part of the joke, it would be super easy for the characters to say how much they "really love one another" and then have the lie detector go off in the background. The writers can't have vows that would imply that these characters are gay, so they instead made the characters not say vows that would imply that they aren't gay.

Now, if you know anything about how the legality of marriage actually works, you know that most fiction gets it wrong: you don't stop someone from being married by interrupting their "I do"s, cutting the minister off before they say "I now pronounce you," stopping the kiss, taking the rings, or anything like that. You are finally "legally married" when you sign the marriage certificate and legal paperwork, which can be during, after, or even before the actual wedding.

So, while the ceremony gets crashed just before the end of it by Gantu trying to grab the genetic experiment, that doesn't actually stop the marriage proceedings unless the signings are postponed. Also, let's appreciate how Pleakley immediately hops into Jumba's arms at the sight of danger, and how Jumba accepts it.

After the ceremony is wrecked and Pleakley explains all of his lies to his family -and they apologize for being hard on him and not understanding- the minister stands up from under the rubble to ask who's paying for the officiation as he holds up some papers, supposedly the legal documents for the marriage. But no one actually responds. The scene ends with a look of newfound-understanding between Pleakley and his mother about their conversation from just a moment ago.

There's no further comment towards the minister about how they don't actually need marriage papers or that the marriage itself is being called off. No one says anything about it in the wrap-up scene just afterwards where Pleakley's family leaves. There's no, "Man, I'm glad I didn't actually have to marry Pleakley," from Jumba or some kind of, "I'm glad that's over," from Pleakley.

From all we know, Pleakley and Jumba did sign those papers for the minister to file with the state of Hawaii.

And this is the best the writers could do. They weren't allowed to canonize/confirm anything, even if they wanted to. They have to try making it as canon as possible by explicitly not stating certain things that would delegitimize it. It becomes a whole assignment to carefully slip past the people holding their paychecks.

As the industry and world have shifted a bit, different kinds of representation have become at least somewhat easier to include than these ever-so-meticulously-crafted inclusions from the past. But, when the people in power have doubts on what might make/lose money, they immediately look to topics like these that polarize extremist audiences. Taking any kind of positive/accepting stance on representation is the first thing they neutralize. So, even when the inclusion has to be as convoluted as this, I still personally see and appreciate everything that the creative teams do.

Remember in the original Lilo and Stitch when Jumba tells Stitch “I tried to give you my good looks but let’s face it, something went wrong”?

Well what’s interesting is that there actually are similarities in their design that prove Jumba tried to model Stitch after himself.

For one thing, they have very similar noses

This one may be a stretch but Stitch’s ears almost resemble much bigger versions of Jumba’s ears, albeit the placement on his head is different too.

They also both have very thick arms, although Jumba’s hands are also very thick as well as his fingers, while Stitch has smaller fingers that have claws (it makes sense Jumba would want him to have claws since Stitch was meant to be dangerous and destructive)

Their feet are also similarly shaped, although Jumba doesn’t have toes while Stitch does, along with round little claws.

EDIT: Correction, @jelthefrog let me know Jumba does have toes, he’s actually just wearing shoes that match his skin tone (thank you again for the correction)

Somehow I just never really noticed any of that. I love that there’s similarities between them.

As for the other experiments, well I personally only headcanon Stitch has a Glitch as the only canon sequel/spinoff, meaning Stitch was Jumba’s only experiment. That’s just my own headcanon though, of course feel free to make up your own headcanons about how the other experiments were designed and whatnot.

Nani immediately checking Candice when she realizes she just wants to "bust" her brothers to their mom and tells her to step up for them

Honestly, what I think the difference between Jumba creating "evil experiments to destroy the world" and every other evil scientist that does the same: is that Jumba is very Aware that his experiments are Living, Breathing, Sentient beings with indipendant thoughts and capable of complex emotions, and while he's surprised when they go against their "programming" he isn't angry or upset, he's delighted, he laughs, he tells Lilo and Stitch what they were meant for and they use that info to find the "cousin" a new home where they can fit in - use their evil for more constructive/harmless tasks. Tasks, that while Jumba is a little miffed that he isn't conquering the galaxy with his experiments, he is just happy his little lab rats are happy.

He's very blasse about it too! And encouraging! He's a father to 626[plus some more] monsters lmao Jumba literally like: I created you to do this, but you are not doing it. Why? Ah, no matter have fun, try not to lose fingers. It messy.

Screw it, I’m gonna say it: I actually think the Lilo & Stitch remake is WORSE than the Snow White remake!

On a surface level, I should be more angry at the latter, considering it’s a bastardization of the film that went on to be the very foundation of Walt Disney Animation Studios (and the Walt Disney Company as a whole). But the former makes me angry on a much deeper, and more personal level.

I was only 10 when I saw the original Lilo & Stitch in theaters, and up until Elsa came along, Lilo was the only “autistic coded” Disney character that truly made me feel seen. Sure, there’ve been other autistic coded Disney characters before her (Ariel, Belle, Quasimodo, Hercules, Tarzan, Milo Thatch), but Lilo was the one I felt was the closest to being realistically autistic: creepy girl with weird hobbies struggles to make friends with other people her age, tends to lash out when someone insults her or misunderstands her, and is generally seen as this social outcast.

Heck, every other main character in Lilo & Stitch is pretty much a social outcast too:

Jumba is an “evil genius”, who the Galactic Council sees as nothing more than a pompous idiot.

Pleakley’s a scrawny nerd who’s completely enamored with Earth’s culture and history (in his own distorted, alien kind of way), and is unapologetically gender non-conforming.

Stitch is a genetically engineered “experiment” who was designed for destruction.

Then there’s Nani, who may not be as much of an “outcast” as the others, but she’s still a young woman living in poverty with her recently orphaned little sister and struggling to find a job in a nation that’s frequently populated by colonizers and tourists. Plus, she’s basically the only other human (besides David) who sees Lilo as a person, and not just a little terror.

Once I’ve read all the leaked spoilers for the live-action remake of Lilo & Stitch, I wasn’t just angry, I was FURIOUS! Practically everything about the original movie that I just described here is either completely absent or significantly dumbed down in the remake! It’s like they tore out everything that made Lilo & Stitch a neurodivergent masterpiece, and made it for the Neurotypical Gaze!

Anyway, I’m done ranting about this piece of shit remake, and I hope it flops harder than that dumb Mufasa movie.

Lilo & Stitch Characters - Animation vs Live Action

Animated Lilo would be very put off by how gosh-darn perfect Live Action Lilo is. Maybe offer to show her some horror movies, or teach her how to throw hands.

Animated David would make some kulolo for Live Action David, sit him down for a heart to heart, and spend hours explaining how to Support Your Loved Ones. Not to get laid, but to be a good person & show how much you care.

Animated Pleakley would take Live Action Pleakley to the nearest spa & strip mall for a makeover montage. And lessons on accessorizing & contouring.

Animated Stitch would tolerate Live Action Stitch’s shenanigans for a few minutes, but quickly get bored & stick him in a Dehydrator to shelve him with Experiment 627.

Animated Jumba would unleash all his Evil Genius super weapons to end Live Action Jumba. Not for the fat jokes, not for being incompetent, but for putting Live Action Lilo in danger.

Animated Nani? I know it’s the wrong IP, but Animated Nani would go into the Avatar State to obliterate Live Action Nani. She’d reenact the Vader Hallway Scene on her way to kick Live Action Nani’s ass. All of Hawaii would ring with the boss music of Animated Nani beating Live Action Nani to a pulp. The aliens at the United Galactic Federation would hear the echoes of Animated Nani screaming “OHANA! MEANS! FAMILY! FAMILY! MEANS! NO! ONE! GETS! LEFT! BEHIND! OR! FORGOTTEN!” as she whales on Live Action Nani with a sledgehammer.

Animated Cobra Bubbles wouldn’t even dignify Live Action Cobra Bubbles with an eyebrow raise.

Captain Gantu & Reuben would throw a Sorry For Your Character Assassination sandwich party for the animated Ohana. And the animated Ohana would struggle to tell him that he’s gonna be Thanos’d in the inevitable sequels.

In depth Lilo & Stitch headcanon about public perception of the aliens:

Kokaua Town is aware there's Something going on with Jumba, Pleakley, and the experiments. Not aware that they're aliens yet, but some of these weird dogs speak like people! (Reuben, Slick, Heckler, Nosy).

Due to Jumba's... public Jumba-ness... people might have pieced together the whole "illegal genetic experiment" thing. Like, oh yeah, this weird man definitely did some illegal shit with animal genes. Maybe they think he's hiding out from the law and that's why he moved in with the Pelekais so quickly.

Nosy goes "they're aliens!" to the Jamesons, and the Jamesons probably end up thinking that Nosy meant illegal aliens- as in, people who immigrated illegally, and in this case for Jumba to hide from the law in his home country. Which is obviously Russia, based on his accent.

Maybe the moms in the PTA look at Pleakley with pity because it can't be easy having to uproot your entire life to move to another country because your husband is on the run from the law. Her weird mannerisms and confusion about everything? "Oh, she's just foreign."

Pleakley's gone out in public in male outfits sometimes, disguised as a human man. In the Christmas episode, he even goes out without a wig. So she's definitely visibly queer. But I doubt anyone brings it up. There might be some gossip behind her back, but to her face, everyone treats her as whatever gender she's going as today.

If Pleakley ever slips up and refers to Jumba as her roommate instead of her husband, well, of course they're not legally married. Gay marriage isn't legal in Russia, and it wasn't legal in Hawaii until 2013, about a decade after the series takes place. And Pleakley is visibly queer. So... yeah, makes sense.

The Pelekais are native Hawaiian, so it's clear Jumba and Pleakley aren't biologically related to them. Due to Stitch's obvious status as one of the experiments, however, it's generally assumed the two met the Pelekais through Lilo's genetically modified dog being Jumba's creation. Which is true, except Stitch isn't actually a modified dog, and Jumba isn't actually a Russian immigrant.

I assume you're pretty bummed about the Lilo and Stitch remake being... how it is, then?

I've been a Sonic fan so long and have seen all the different takes on the world and characters. So I'm aware all writers have their own style and show certain aspects of Sonic's personality more than other traits, some write him more laid back and cool, others show his short temper or his quietness in the forefront, and others show his kindness and joking side. I've learned to not take that stuff seriously or let it ruin my enjoyment of some of that media. That's not to say the media itself doesn't deserve some criticism or that I think it's flawless. It's just the nature of having multiple hands on an IP as big as Sonic.

But I have never seen such blatant character and story assassination as this remake has done. spoiler rant incoming

IT WAS SO EASY DISNEY THIS WAS AN EASY WIN??? I know they already made so much money so they don't care. I was not looking forward to this remake at all. I at least thought it would be medicore I knew story changes would probably happen that it would not be a 1:1 movie. That's fine that's okay to have some story beat differences or scene changes as long as the heart and message of the film come through. But that ending is disgusting and insulting.

How does the freaking sonic movies do found family better than LILO AND STITCH?! The OG Lilo and Stitch probably was one of the first kids entertainment that brought the attention of found families and unconventional families to mainstream media. Why would you butcher Nani's character like that? Why is Jumba the villain? HE'S NOT EGGMAN HERE. That's NOT his character, Jumba actually cares and loves and takes pride in all his experiments they are basically his children. It's stupid to make him the villain or at least not be redeemed by learning from watching Stitch himself change.

Having Nani give up Lilo to CPS so she can go to college is just stupid and wrong. The original Nani wanted Lilo in her life so badly she did give up a ton of stuff for herself. Yeah I would have loved to see her finally pursue some things for herself but she was willing to temporarily put that aside because Lilo was more important and their relationship meant way more and as Nani told cobra bubbles in the movie, “I’m the only one who understands, if you take that away she won’t stand a chance.” She’s the only one who gets Lilo and what she’s going through. Lilo is also a troubled child and Nani is worried no one will understand that or give Lilo the patience and care she needs. she already lost her parents she wasn't ready to lose her sister too, she was willing to fight for Lilo, you don't feel that in the live action film. Lilo is already bullied by her peers. Before Stitch Nani was the only person on Lilo's side. I don't care Nani has a ring power/portal gun and can still see Lilo. That's not the same.

ALSO YOU ARE IN HAWAII you can learn marine biology right there!!! WHY ARE YOU GOING TO CALIFORNIA??? Nani really just needed a support system that's why the aliens moving in took pressure off Nani so she could work. Having the friendly neighbor is fine but it kinda already offers a solution in the beginning of the movie. The neighbor could babysit and offer support. It takes away the stakes of Lilo and Nani situation right away. You could have the community come together at the end to offer support to Lilo and Nani and still have Nani keep custody of Lilo without sacrificing Nani's dreams. I don't know there's just so many ways to fix that ending and still have the Ohana message.

Stitch's arc is also greatly lacking without the ugly duckling scene or having him be honest with Lilo that he is an alien.

Lilo and Stitch means a lot to me, I had just turned 9 when the original film came out, I remember the trailers and I had never wanted to see a movie so badly. I have never felt that way for any other movie since. I knew nothing about that film but knew I had to see it. It inspired my art style as well, I love all the rounded shapes and character designs, the water color backgrounds. I have a very close friend who I consider a sister even though we aren't related, I have that movie to thank for that. Lilo and stitch has spin off media as well like the anime, manga, comics, Stitch and Ai but they at least honor the source material better than Disney's own remake. But also please don't harass people who do happen to like the remake or at least aspects of it. It's just not for me but if others can find enjoyment out of it good for them.

Kin was created in a lab he was one of many that came before him the blood of the fallen dragon queen a star fea an the blood of a long forgotten creation made from none other then the fabled Jumba Jookiba that these scientists can only hope there creations will be half as good as his.

experiment after experiment most died before the age of 7 there bodies couldn't contain the magic they tried to use. they feared that Kin would be the same they would inject their drugs an magic enhancers in the same place's on his neck day in an day our before an after every test. thus leaving a mark on his neck permanently scarred.

on one of these tests they wanted to see his physical capabilities they had set a obstacle rigorous course. the wall that was there was 20 feet they thought that it would contain him Kin scaled that wall like a spider an ran.

Ran as fast an as far as his little legs would carry him, which was for two days an nights straight until he smelt something yummy an ran to the source it was a basket on a blanket he tore threw it like scrap paper an ate the source of the smell it was a tuna sandwich. his ears shot up he heard movement an tried to run for it thinking it was the scientist's.

Only to be grabbed by the scruff of his shirt "whats this? the little thing that stole our food that Silver lovingly prepared tries to run for it!?"

"I WAS FUCKING HUNGRY OK!!! I HADN'T EATEN IN TWO FUCKING DAYS!!" Lilia almost laughed but he was trying to be a decent role model...he did put him in time out an by time out a bath because he stunk which Kin hated he cried the whole time.

Lilia didn't know what he would do about him an decided he'd figure it out the tomorrow they had tucked him in the guest bedroom only to hear screaming not to long after Lilia an Silver went to check on him an Kin was on the ceiling eyes glowing green frightened.

"N-No more!!! NO MORE SHOTS!!"

"we don't have shots" Silver said calmly

"but the ones that do will come for me, they'll hold me down an if i don't listen they use the hose!!"

"my dad is the strongest he won't let that happen an neither will i" little silver walked over an out reached his hand "promise"

Kin detached him self from the ceiling "p-promise?"

Silver slept with Kin that night an for the first time in Kin's life he had a good sleep.

during the following morning Lilia was already hatching a plan he just had to do a few things first.

Silver held his hand an gave him a gentle smile

Lilia had Malleus an Matilda watch them while he went on a errand an by errand i mean tracking Kins trail to find where he came from sneak into the building find Kin's files to see what he is an what horrible things they have done to him before killing every one in the lab an setting it on fire only keeping the medical file to help with Kin's development.

living/growing up with Silver Lilia an Sebek was the perfect environment for him to thrive in. he wasn't scared for his life an living with Lilia taught Kin to cook really early in life...among other such things.

he wants to help others but doesn't realize just how monsterly strong he is compared to most kids around his age. not that Lilia didn't know how to deal with it if anyone could teach a youngster how to control is strength its him. now for the language an his need to be a gremlin on the other hand? Lilia quite enjoyed his mischief an nothing made him laugh more then hearing Kin swear he wondered if those bastard scientist's were the reason for his fowl language but decided not to worry about it.

school life

Kin has very good grades in both academics an in physical activates at school but he also has the most detentions for reasons that are pretty obvious to most.

even now his cursing streak remains its engraved in him at this point. that hasn't stopped certain prefects from trying to stop it an on that note.

Heartslabyul

Riddle hates his languge posture an deminer would collar him more if he wasn't in someone else's dorm. despite how much Riddle loaths Kin, Kin thinks that Riddle is a cool guy a second year like him became a prefect just from excellent grades alone. he only wishes thats how it worked at his dorm.

Catar has tried to get a selfie with Kin but to no avail

this is what Kin looks like with his hair back he has always found his eyes scarry an so assumes that no one would want to see them either.

despite Catars an Trey's warning Ace did try to mess with Kin once what did he get for his troubles? all of his left side shoes are gone he bought a new pair an the left shoe was gone the next day after Trey had Ace apologize were the shoes magically returned though with way more dirt on them then before.

Deuce actually gets along with Kin ok an Kin on more then one occasion has tried tutoring Deuce because he can tell he is trying to be better at his studies.

the dorm he was placed in which makes him Leona's problem strong an smart as he is Kins social skills seem to be lacking not that he is much better only when he needs to be. Leona will be his role model an by that Leona actually means put him into a headlock an make him do push ups when he fucks up.

Ruggie finds Kin very useful because he can make what looks like junk to most into useful items an machinery in the blink of an eye.

"you ever think you have been placed in the wrong dorm?"

Kin lifts the stadium bench seats to help some students look for the disk that flung underneath it "why you think this dorm isn't a fit for you" Kin assumes Ruggie was referring to himself when he said that.

Azul has been trying to be Kin's "friend" sense year one for the benefits of course Kin has made computers but also electric cars an bikes an he just hands them out for free to his friends think of the profit he could be making Azul wants to make that profit. but Kin doesn't like his vibe or how he talks to him so he usually avoids him like the plague.

Floyd is an interesting case on how they met an became "best buddy's" one day they had class at the school pool so of course Floyd was transformed into his merfolk form but Kin was only sitting on the edge he wouldn't even put his feet in the pool he heard some of the students say he got a note so he doesn't need to actually go in the pool to pass the grade.
