The first test pressing of Being Funny finally sits in Este’s excited hands. She always looks forward to spinning Matty’s work and being able to hold it physically before anyone else. Luckily, it came in a sample sleeve of what the final product would look like—unlike most test pressings that come in boring and generic packaging—so Este is able to admire and study its charming design. Matty watches, thrilled to see her reaction. 

Her eyes scan over the sleeves with the lyrics printed over them, picking out her favourites and smiling when she reads them. Knowing how truly earnest Matty had decided to be with his lyrics on this project, she can’t help but blush at the overtly romantic phrases and the fact that they could have been written with her in mind. 

“So who’s this one about?” Este poses sarcastically, pointing at All I Need To Hear and giggling in the process. She watches Matty lightly roll his eyes and the corners of his mouth pin up into a grin. 

“George, actually,” He jokes. 

He’s only just lowered the needle onto the black vinyl, so a couple of seconds afterwards, the two of them hear the telltale piano chords of the opening track. Matty steps back to let it play, taking a seat in the chair that sat next to their sofa. Este follows suit and lightly settles onto his lap, lyric sleeve still in hand. 

“Shut up,” she replies, continuing to read away. “I actually can’t think about that song too hard or else I’ll, like, fully weep.”

Matty chuckles, pulling her legs to the left so they dangle off the side and so he can see her face. He sets his arm across her thighs to hold her tight and clasps his hands together around her waist. 

“I mean every word, you know.” He says quietly. 

Este feels her nose get fizzy with emotion as she reads more of the lyrics. 

'Cause I don't need music in my ears

I don't need the crowds and the cheers

Oh, just tell me you love me

'Cause that's all that I need to hear

She thought about how punctuated by music Matty’s life had been; how it was the only way he can make sense of the world. How deeply it made him feel and know himself. And how it brought him the most important connection he’s built—his audience and the mark he’s left on them. 

Then, her mind wandered to the way he somehow unabashedly declares that her love is set above all of that; through the song. It’s the ultimate exclamation of love and devotion.

He wrote that about you, Este thinks to herself. Her nose goes fizzy again. She blinks away the tears that rise. 

Her fingers find their way around the nape of Matty’s neck, and she caresses the skin there gently. “I’m serious, love. I’ll snot on you.” Este warns. 

They laugh together for a second, then hear the record switch over to Happiness. Matty studies the way her foot begins tapping to the beat and how her lips move ever so slightly, to mouth the words to herself. 

“God, this is the best song ever,” Este gushes as the needle scraping along the vinyl helps remind her of how much she loves it. He shrugs, raising his heel along to the song making her bounce up and down. She laughed at how nonchalant he was attempting to be. “Don’t be humble. It is.”

He looks at the floor and then up at her. “Another one written about you.” He says, kissing her shoulder.

She looks down at him, setting down the record sleeve. “Would you really go blind just to see me?”

Matty nods slightly. The brown in his eyes glows with admiration. “I’d go too far just to have you near, too,” he teases. 

There’s a shyness in his voice that Este can hear buried beneath the light sarcasm. It makes her heart flutter while Waughy’s saxophone blares through the speakers with charisma.

“Do you always think about me when writing love songs?”

It’s a question she ponders quite often. She’s not sure why she does; but she struggles to conceptualise being the subject of art she loves so dearly. Though Este can tell it’s second nature to him. 

“Course. Who else?” Matty answers, like it’s obvious, because it is. 

Este shrugs. “I don’t know. Maybe the ones before me.” 

“Can’t even remember their names, now that you’ve come along.” He says casually. 

As they continue to listen, Este eventually gets up to flip it to the next side. But as she does, the conversation they share reminds her of one of the first times Matty admitted to writing about her, and how precious it was. 

Este has a clear memory of Matty being on tour in 2019 and sending her messages about Then Because She Goes, when it was a work in progress. She thinks it was easier for him to hint and imply the lyrics were about her—how their times together felt so indulgent even though the pain of parting ways came along with that—because he didn’t have to do it to her face. He had sent her voice memos of it while he was halfway across the world and Este witnessed the song grow from an idea to a fully fleshed moment of splendour on the record. It was such a special experience.

But, when she managed to learn that there was more (quite a few more, Matty would later reveal) on Notes that had an undertone of Este-ness, his admittance was much more timid. 

It was after the release of the album was pushed back a few times, a period of time she would frequently find Matty hunched over his laptop screen with stress. The final touches of mixing and mastering were occurring. Track by track, things were being perfected, and Este grew more and more eager to hear the project as a whole.

Finally, Matty asked her to join him for a front-to-back listen-through of the album. They sat down together and shared his pair of Airpods, the left for him and the right for her, and pressed play on his files.

Because of its sporadic final weeks of creation, there were some songs that sounded different to when Este had first heard them, and even a few she hadn’t heard at all. One that was new to her had been a last minute addition that George composed of a rogue idea sitting in Matty’s notes app. It ended up being a favourite of hers.

“You hadn’t shown me Bagsy Not In Net,” Este pointed out when the album was over and she had spilled enough praise.

“We made it so spontaneously. Towards the end. I guess it just never came up,” he explained, picking at the skin on his fingers. “Do you like it? I really like it.”

She furiously nodded. “That’s why I brought it up. It really stood out to me.”

Matty clicked randomly around on his laptop and refused to meet her eyes as he said, “I’m glad Bagsy stands out. I was nervous you wouldn’t like it.”

Este’s brows furrowed.

“Since when do you care about whether anyone likes your work besides you?” She said playfully.

“Are you kidding?! I always care about you liking my—”

Este giggled, putting her finger over his lips to muffle his sentence and end it abruptly. “Okay, okay. You do care. But I feel like you’re never nervous. Like, with every other song—”

“I was nervous because Bagsy Not In Net is about wanting to die with you.” 

Her mouth remained agape as Matty interrupted. It came out of his mouth with impulse and haste as if it had been sitting behind his teeth begging to be heard. 

All the while, his eyes stayed glued to his laptop screen. He was afraid of it being too bold of a concept, or that she wouldn’t feel the same way—given the fact that it had barely been three months since they’d gotten back together. It was easy as ever to write about her and send her little messages through a screen that hinted at him doing so; but having Este’s real and living gaze burn into his face while admitting something so raw was not the walk in the park he hoped it would be. His heart began racing, and he didn’t know when it would stop.

“It’s about me? Are you sure?” Este spluttered. 

Matty eventually peeled his eyes away and met hers. 

“Who else?”

Later, after a long night, the two of them whispered quiet words to one another in bed before turning over and shutting their eyes. Este had another idea, though, and turned her phone back on. She slipped on her headphones, and opened the audio file sitting in her notes. 

Este begged Matty to Airdrop a copy of Bagsy Not In Net over to her so that she could listen to it again. Sure, she was addicted to the charming orchestral introduction and how it pulsated alongside the beat as the song progressed. But really she was just desperate to hear the lyrics again.

She closed her eyes as she listened, taking in each word.

Her heart panged at the idea of Matty being afraid of the end. Then Because She Goes was almost an anthem of hope, or of reassurance, that their time apart would at least be temporary. But this—these lyrics—hit Este in such a different way. It was desperate and stark and honest. Matty was begging for her to agree that they were all or nothing. That even death is something they ought to do as a pair. Este couldn’t possibly make sense of how huge the sentiment was, and how beautifully it came together with the instrumental. 

The song looped a couple of times before she finally pressed pause. Este shrugged the headphones off of her head and set them back onto her bedside table. The noise of her headphones made Matty open his eyes, realising that she was still awake.

Her back was turned to him, so he peered over her shoulder to see the glowing screen of her phone. He watched Este open the notes app on her phone, and slowly type, “Do you want to leave at the same time?” into a new file. He sleepily smiled. 

She didn’t label it, or type anything further. Copying the line heard over and over in her new favourite song was the only objective. She was hoping that making note of it would help her remember it forever, even though she probably would anyway.

tbh, he wouldn’t necessarily wish to tickle people often, but when he does, he would like,, hesitantly poke them a couple sides to gauge their reaction and get more confident if it’s a positive reaction! it gets really obvious around the third or fourth poke, though LOLL

on the other hand, he would express his wish to be tickled kinda like, idk how to describe it, but kinda provocative? but more in a way to distract himself, like he would give jade and floyd more chores or give them a sudden rest day whatever and ofc theyd know bc it was unusual for azul to be like this. plus, i feel like he would flinch more often when someones close to him (which is adorable!!) so yeah.

H: Habits | As a lee/ler or both, do they have specific habits when it comes to tickling?

i think, not on purpose, but when he’s tickled, sometimes ink comes from his eyes. people get w bit concerned if they arent a mer LOLL but its jusy something that happens (also i love azul ink HELPP this is tbe most random thing ever im sorry) also, he squeezes his eyes super tightly.

as a ler, i think it wpuld be silly if he would accidentally try to use his extra limbs (that he doesn’t have) to tickle you more but then he would falter, which could potentially give u the upperhand if you’re quick enough

I: Interrogation | How well would they handle a tickle interrogation?

GAHHHH i give him three minutes. tops. well, to crack at least. once someone finds a spot that drives him crazy enough, he will start laughing and will not stop. but tellinf u want u want to know.. well, you’ll have to work for it. (just start tickling his death spots and eventually he’ll tell you anything)

L: Laughter | What does their laughter sound like when they are tickled?

ITS REALLY DEEP AND LIKE,,, calculated(?? its him trying not to embarrass himself with his “real” laugh) but thwn it gets squeaky and snorts all around. its usually surprises ppl bc it just seems.. so.. out of character, which is why he’s so embarrassed by it. its super cute though.

Q: Question | Their response to the question ‘are you ticklish’?

his response wpuld be so funny. first, he would look at you, whipping his head around. a blush would appear on his face, but he wpuld try to cover it. afterall, flustered wouldn’t do well for his image. clears his throat out of nervous. “tick—ticklish? of course not! what a strange thing to ask!” then, desperately trying to change the subject (it doesn’t work about half the time).

W: Word | What is their reaction to the t-word? Can they say it out loud or do they get embarrassed?

by the word in general, he’s not. though, he wouldn’t just throw it around but he can say it fine. (unless on the occasion, he’s feeling.. some type of way?) HOWEVER, if it’s regarding his own sensitivity, now that’s a different story. he will say it if he absolutely has to, but not without a bit of a stutter or blush, so yeah, he avoids it at all costs haha

☆ junpei takes on a big brother role with ken. lending him manga and video games rated teen/mature that he knows contain content that is okay for his age. taking him out at night to the arcade/for "secret" menu items. sneaking fun snacks into his room so he has something to feast on besides milk. this makes ken feel seen as an equal rather than as a child bc junpei is so genuine in his antics that it doesn't feel belittling/mothering.

☆ mitsuru begins truly seeking out her own style after she + yukari deepen their bond in november. at first, this results in some truly horrendous outcomes bc yukari wanted mitsuru to select what she liked for once instead of a stylist choosing for her. it comes to a head when mitsuru walks out one sunday wearing a red leather jacket, tan cargo pants, a retro graphic tee, and crocs. she eventually lands on a casual alternative style under yukari's strict guidance.

☆ akihiko is prone to forgetting about things outside of his goals or the people he cares for. this leads to many situations where he finds himself standing head empty, no thoughts in the middle of the grocery store or during casual conversation with family/friends/acquaintances. his tell that he's forgotten something is the tips of his ears turning bright red. when younger, he'd steal shinji's beanie to cover them out of self-consciousness. his notes app is clogged with dozens of nonsensical ramblings such as "milk" or "sun outside" in an attempt to remember such things.

junpei (along w yukari, minato/kotone, fuuka, n aigis) being older siblings to ken is so important to me… idk how to explain but it just hits different …!!!! i love when ken shows up and junpei wants to be his older brother so bad lmfao. i feel like him (and the other second years) being closer to ken’s age makes it easier for them to understand him so it’s way easier for them to get along. only downside is junpei cannot help ken with any of his work. it could be the easiest problem youve ever seen and junpei will be like “sorry i cant help you”

the thought of mitsuru not having any sense of style is so funny bc i’ve always just been like “yeah i mean she can probably dress decently on her own” but it would b cute to think she just picks out whatever she likes without thinking if the outfit will actually look good together or not. she sees a funny little cartoon on a shirt and is like This is delightful!!! and grabs it and pairs it with the most expensive and beautiful pants you’ve ever seen. then she wears a hideous pair of shoes to top it all off. without yukari, i imagine she wears her ugly ass outfit to go out to eat w like. aki or something. she shows up n akihiko (who knows how to dress) is just like what the hell are you wearing

now that u say this… akihiko is kinda sim coded. does workouts anywhere he goes. forgets what hes doing the second he enters a room. & omfg. him blushing to the tips of his ears is something i put in my drawings all the time idk if it’s noticeable but i love it so much… + the notes app thing so real but also imagine him sending texts to ppl to remind himself of certain things. mitsuru waking up in the morning to see akihiko texted her “Water” at 3:42 AM. shinji picks up his phone and has 12 notifications from akihiko within seconds of each other (its a grocery list). ken doing his homework and akihiko texts him “Koromaru” and nothing else (he needs to take koromaru for a walk later)

That is one BIIIG Milestone reached, so even if you can't complete the full game, you're definitely ready to upload a fully fledged demo👌be proud yourself, you definitely deserved it bro, and about length, I think it's a good amount, considering the short timeframe you had to work on it.

Also don't even worry about character arcs, as long as your story has Beginning/Build Up/Climax/End you're good to go 👍. Sometimes it's better when you don't have everyone's backstory explained to you ya know?

For example Michael Myers, like yeah, we saw him stabbing his sister as a kid, but we sure as hell don't know why exactly he did it and what he went through during his stay at Smith's Grove Sanitarium, yet he still managed to be one of the biggest horror icons today. (I'm strictly speaking about the OG Movie btw, idk shit about what they did to him in the sequels)

Sometimes, just some cool shit happening is enough for a story, it's not like we're expecting a full on 24 episode Anime in LN form either 🤷‍♀️ also considering that it IS a Yandere Story, having sympathy for the LIs falls a bit short, when they're probably gonna go full sicko mode on us somewhere in their routes 0_0"

Summary: will finds one of the note you leave in his locker. He thinks its some kind of joke and gets quite upset, to which you think he's upset because he knows it's from you. This leads to you going to his house and trying to talk.

Finally the end of the damn day. God if you had to hear Angela's voice one more time your ears would start to hurt. But also ya for the end of the day because you can see how will, will react to your note.

He always smiles or blushes slightly reading them, which brightens your day. He's just so darn cute.

You stand by your locker, pretending your looking for something until will finally appears. Your attention was now fully on him.

He opens his locker and sees the note. His eyes light up. He takes it, opening it and smiling at the words. You smile. He looked so adorable.

Suddenly will noticed someone staring and looked your way. Shit. You smiled but he didn't look happy. His expression changed and he crumbled the paper, walking off.

What? Why did he look so upset? Did you ruin his mood? Was it because he knew it was from you? Whats wrong?

"Well you don't look like your acting so.... fine, come in". He let you in. Closing the door behind you. You turned to him and smiled. He gave you a glance and walked you to his room where you two sat down on the bed.

"So what do you wnat to talk about?" Will asked, crossing his arms. "Will, first I'm the one who's leaving you those notes, and they're no joke. Everything said on there is true, I'm just too much of a pussy to say it to your face." You paused looking over at him.

After that night you tried your darn best to be by wills side all 99% of the time. To prove to him that you loved him.

And since you spent most of your time with him, Angela noticed and started to resent you. But that only made it better for you. Since now people wouldn't be scared of you or upset with you, they would actually like it when you would be nice to them.

am thinking abt kagihira bc. well honestly bc some people who are far more intelligent than me have been posting about it lol. okay but like i feel like the central question of the whole manga is like. does hirano like kagiura back? and if he does, does he Recognize it for what it is? and there’s like... a lot there, specifically w/ how hirano doesn’t really acknowledge that his very special relationship with kagiura is different and special in a way he usually doesn’t act with anyone else, and that i think the way he expresses his feelings towards kagiura and the way kagiura does it are a bit different. so maybe they don’t really recognize it for what it is. but one thing i feel like the series hasn’t really touched on (but hopefully will!) is hirano’s idea of like--love? and romance in general? more under the cut lol

for both sasaki and kagiura, they’ve pretty much known they were into miyano and hirano from the start, respectively. kagiura in particular wants to be in love the way his parents are in love--he’s got a pretty obvious model to follow in terms of affection and such. miyano had a crush on his female classmate from before, and since he reads bl manga i feel like he’s much more open to idea of romance as compared to hirano (though i think the fiction vs. reality parts of same-sex romance are a big part of miyano’s whole introspection throughout the series, it’s not smooth sailing and everything).

but like... hirano? since we don’t know much about his personal life, it’s really hard to tell what he might even conceptualize being in love to be like. what does romance look like for him? has he ever even looked for it / imagined it in the first place? with his relationship with kagiura, i think he very much just follows by the sort of instinct of--yeah, i wanna make him happy, because it makes me happy. the times we share are precious and fun to me. but i think part of the reason why he so firmly tells kagiura no is that he may just genuinely feel like the action of “liking” someone is not something that he does at all. and, this is kind of straying from the point, but... i mean, hirano’s ALREADY told kagiura that his answer is no. but he still feels like he can’t leave kagiura alone / doesn’t want to not room with him anymore because he feels like things haven’t resolved between them! um... what hasn’t resolved, pray tell. is it kagiura giving up on his feelings? bc it’s not like hirano can affect that! it’s just that... he doesn’t want to leave kagiura. and he wants that because he wants kagiura to stay with him... that nebulous feeling, is that love? is that romance? how do you judge? how do you know for sure?

i dont have any final thoughts so i just wanna say i LOVE hirano’s dumbass “ANYONE would ___!” its so funny. when hes like anyone would blush hearing u say that! and again when hes like gosh kagiura you’re so cute that anyone would spoil u to death!
