地球の軌道上には世界各国から打ち上げられた人工衛星が行き交っており、衛星トラッカーサービス「CelesTrak」のデータによると、2024年9月6日時点でアクティブな人工衛星だけで1万345基あるそうです。大量の人工衛星の分類や現在位置、周回軌道などを3Dで可視化した「Keep Track」では、どれほどの人工衛星があるのか視覚的に理解できるほか、目当ての人工衛星が現在どこにいてどのように動いているかなどを確認することができます。

Keep Trackはブラウザから無料でアクセスすることができます。Keep Trackを開くと、まずは数秒のロード時間が入りました。

以下がKeep Trackの画面。地球の周りにある無数の点が、アクティブ・非アクティブなものも含めて3万7000基以上の人工衛星を示しています。

マウスを点に重ねると、それぞれの点がどういう人工衛星なのかが表示されます。

スクロールすることで縮小・拡大が可能。画面を縮小すると、地球からかなり遠い範囲まで人工衛星の網が広がっていることがよくわかります。

また、マウスをドラッグしたり、右上のX/Y/Z軸のアイコンを動かしたりすることで、地球をくるくる回すこともできます。試しに日本を見てみると、記事作成時点では17時前後だったため、日が沈みかけてうっすら影になっていました。このように、Keep Trackはリアルタイムの地球上のどこにどのような人工衛星が飛んでいるのかを確認することができるというわけ。

左上には世界標準時で時刻が表示されていますが、この時刻をクリックすると、任意の日時にさかのぼって「この日のこの時間はどのように人工衛星が飛んでいたのか」を見ることも可能。

さらに拡大して、記事作成時点で日本の上空にある人工衛星を調べてみました。ちょうど関東上空に飛んでいたのは、SpaceXの衛星インターネット「Starlink」の型番4212。

衛星をクリックすると、より細かい情報をチェックすることができます。

Keep Trackの画面下部にある三角アイコンをクリックすると、より詳細なメニューが表示されます。

「Sensors」をクリックすると、人工衛星を管理している施設や団体別に人工衛星を絞り込むことが可能。

「Sensor Info」からは、絞り込んだ施設・団体の詳細を見ることができます。以下の画像は、フロリダ州にあるエグリン空軍基地の詳細を開いたところ。

任意の人工衛星を選択した状態で「Take Photo」をクリックすると、地球軌道上を選択した人工衛星が移動している様子の画像をダウンロードできます。

ダウンロードした画像が以下。選択した人工衛星のみが表示されるため、すっきりと見やすい形になりました。

「Find Satellite」からは任意の人工衛星を絞り込むことができます。左側の検索窓から、「County」を「Japan」に変更。

「FIND SATTELLITE(S)」をクリック。

日本の人工衛星だけが地球軌道上に並び、右側に名称の一覧が表示されました。

日本の人工衛星の中から、東京工業大学によって2021年に打ち上げられた超小型衛星の「ひばり」を発見しました。最大までズームすると、人工衛星のおおまかな形状もわかります。

また、特定の人工衛星だけ色を変更することもできます。SpaceXの衛星インターネット「Starlink」は、サービス拡大・強化のために数多くの軌道への打ち上げを実施しており、イーロン・マスクCEOが2024年9月6日に「地球を周回するすべてのアクティブな衛星の約3分の2をStarlinkの人工衛星が占める」と発表しました。そこで、実際にどれほどStarlinkの衛星があるのかを色分けして確認してみます。メニューの「Color Schemes」から「Starlink」をクリック。

以下の画像の、緑色がStarlink、赤色がその他の人工衛星。地球から離れた位置にあるのは赤いその他の人工衛星ばかりですが、地球の近くには緑色で示されたStarlinkが地球の表面を覆い尽くすほど飛んでいるとわかります。

さらに、Keep Trackの大きな特徴は、「衛星の破壊シミュレーション」を備えている点にあります。任意の人工衛星を選択した上でメニューの「Create Breakup」を選択し、左側に表示されたウィンドウの「CREATE BREAKUP」をクリック。

すると、選択した人工衛星が指定した数の破片となって分解され、その後どう軌道上を動くかというシミュレーションを見ることができます。Keep Trackは人工衛星の軌道をマッピングすることで新しい打ち上げ���参考にできるほか、使い終わった人工衛星のスペースデブリ問題を解決することもミッションとしているとのこと。

公式ページからは、地球軌道上にあるスペースデブリの様子も見ることができます。以下の画像はその一例で、軌道を示す線で地球が見えなくなってしまうほど、無数のデブリであふれていることがよくわかります。

Keep Trackはオープンソースソフトウェアで、詳細はGitHubで公開されています。
