For all of China’s efforts to carry on the Winter Games with a festive spirit, Beijing 2022 unfolded as a joyless spectacle: constricted by a global health disaster, fraught with geopolitical tensions, tainted once again by accusations of doping and overshadowed by the crisis in Ukraine.
As athletes marched into the Bird’s Nest stadium in Beijing on Sunday night to close the most contentious Olympics in years, China could celebrate pulling off the Games on schedule, despite everything. It is a success, however, as measured by the low bar of avoiding total disaster.
The most indelible memory of these Winter Olympics — beside images of Olympic workers and volunteers enrobed in hazmat gear — will very likely be that of a 15-year-old Russian skater falling on the ice after being allowed to compete despite a test showing traces of a banned heart medicine.
The skater, Kamila Valieva, broke into tears after her dismal performance, only to be berated by her coach, leaving organizers and observers alike to ponder how much they demand of athletes who are, after all, still children.
The International Olympic Committee, which spent years fending off doubts about choosing an authoritarian nation as host, spent much of the past two weeks dodging controversy after controversy in Beijing.
In addition to troubling issues raised by the Valieva episode, it faced questions about the conditions for athletes who isolated after testing positive for Covid; about the fate of Peng Shuai, the tennis player and former Olympian who accused a senior Chinese official of sexual assault; about the inevitable injection of politics into an event meant to rise above them.
“What can one say, except to heave a sigh,” said Orville Schell, the director of the Center on U.S.-China Relations at the Asia Society in New York. “Such an august occasion, designed to promote openness, good sportsmanship and transnational solidarity, ended up being a heavily policed, brittle, Potemkin-like simulacrum of the Olympic ideal.”

I saw Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (should really be “Kingdom of the Apes” but whatever) and I surprisingly liked it a lot. I also found a lot of reviews of the film missing the mark of the film. So I’m going to explore it a bit here. SPOILERS.
So about Planet of the Apes…
Short answer, I’ve never been a fan of the franchise and the reason has everything to do with prejudice. I just don’t…
I listened to a lot of music in 2022. Too much music. 231 new LPs, to be exact, plus a slew of EPs, compilation albums, and live releases. That didn’t give me much opportunity to revisit the albums I did like, so when it came time to rank what I’d listen to, I wasn’t confident. My rankings kept shifting around as the year progressed. As a result, I’m not sure my top 20 is really my top 20.
But…

I recently took a trip to Utah for 5 days and it was terrific. I’ll post in more details later about several of these things. Here’s the highlights:
Wednesday, Oct 5 - Arrived in Utah. Who thought having a 1/2 mile walk at the airport to get to baggage claim is a good idea...especially at that elevation? I live at sea level, that walk had me huffing and puffing.
I drove down to Provo and met a friend who took me to see the Roots of Knowledge stained glass display at UVU. I enjoyed that. He also took me for my first Swig experience. What’s up with all these drive-thru soda places in Utah?
Had dinner with a BYU student who had contacted me and wanted to meet
————————————————————
Thursday, Oct 6 - Had lunch with Allison Dayton who co-founded Lift+Love, brought my friend @loveerran along. It was a great conversation.
Erran and I then went to the Salt Lake City library, which is an amazing building, and met a friend we’ve known from Tumblr & the Queerward Discord. That was a good get together.
That evening was a BBQ social at Encircle House in Salt Lake City. I was surprised by several folks from the Queerward Discord being there, that was fun to meet y’all. One of them said, “Look at all the older queer people, guess we aren’t the pioneers we thought we were.” My response was, “it’s rare to see older queer people like this outside of LDS adjacent spaces. It’s sad that something which saved them also caused them so much pain. And we weren’t out at your ages, you are definitely still pioneers!”
My friend Ghost, who used to live in Florida, was at the Encircle BBQ. Had friends who are husband-and-wife who came to show support and I enjoyed introducing them as my “straight friends.” Having so many friends there made me feel like the Belle of the Ball.
And OMG, Adam from the It Gets Better at BYU video was at the SLC Encircle House, he interns there. He’s cuter than ever. I am so glad to see him thriving.
————————————————————
Friday, Oct 7 - I had some appointments with General Authorities. I met with Elder Kevin Hamilton for 90 minutes, then had lunch with Elder & Sister Renlund for an hour. We had some great conversations which I’ll post about. They were all very generous with their time.
Friday evening, the Affirmation conference began with dinner & speakers. David Hayward, aka the Naked Pastor spoke, and he made a cartoon specifically for Affirmation! Sue Robbins spoke, she is a trans activist in Utah, and Michael Todd, a gay country singer from Utah, sang for us.
————————————————————
Saturday, Oct 8 - I met early this morning with my friend Claudio Costa, an emeritus Seventy. He updated me on his life and newest calling as a missionary working with the Tabernacle Choir. I updated him on my life and he says, “David, you’re more LDS than most LDS.” It’s often that way, queer people who are trying to make church work often embrace their church and its culture very tightly, kind of becoming Super Mormon. Claudio also chides me for not contacting him months earlier about my health crisis with blood clots and says he can pray for me & put my name on the temple, and anytime I need to talk or vent that I should call him. And the cutest thing is he talks about me often enough that his wife will now say, “My friend David,” when she mentions me, she feels she knows me.
Affirmation conference began this morning with Roni Jo Draper speaking in the plenary session. Loved her remarks. She spoke about community and likened it to dancing at her tribe’s reservation. Everybody dances, don’t say you don’t dance and sit out life. Everybody has issues, don’t say you’re too chubby to dance, instead put your weight into it. Don’t get along with someone else, dance it out. She also said don’t go around complaining you’re out of shape, we can all see that, instead do what you can and others will do what they can.
The great thing about going to a conference like this is the new friends we make, finding people who understand and get us in a way few others truly do.
After the plenary session, I was on a panel and parents with LGBTQ children could ask us questions. I think it went well. We spent the first half of the session talking about trans people and transitioning, which meant I learned a lot but didn’t have much to say. When the moderator had us move on, the next question was aimed directly to me, how do you stay an active member and make that work?
After lunch, I recorded a podcast episode with Latter Gay Stories. I was initially reluctant to do so as I’m not their typical guest, often they’ve recently been part of a high profile activity, or they have books out, and many of them have left the church. Also, I was first asked at Thursday’s Encircle BBQ to be on the podcast, and therefore didn’t have time to prepare (as someone with social anxiety, I usually way over prepare for things, so going in with no prep was a little unsettling). In addition to an audio podcast, they also release it as video, which meant I was filmed. I have a lot of body issues related to my weight, and being on camera for everyone to see was hard for me. Additionally, this wasn’t in their usual studio, but a makeshift space at the conference, and their portable lights made such a glare on my glasses that I had to take them off, which meant I couldn’t clearly see the facial expression of the host. Latter Gay Stories recorded several episodes over the conference, so I don’t know when my episode will be released
This day was full of hard things for someone with social anxiety, but I was brave and did all the things.
I had dinner with a friend of mine, we spent 5 hours catching up, laughing, and having heart-to-heart conversations. We stayed at the City Creek Mall until they turned out the lights out on us.
There was a dance at the Affirmation Conference that I considered going to, dancing is the #1 trigger of my social anxiety and I thought about going to the dance as a form of exposure therapy, but instead decided why ruin an amazing day with a bout of anxiety (and likely tears and going back to my hotel room to hide for the rest of the night), and instead stayed in the moment with my friend with whom I was having a delightful time.
————————————————————
Sunday, Oct 9 - Final day of the Affirmation Conference. Heard Paul Cardall play piano live!!!! Love him. His music moves me. Just as his music brings me peace, his words also settled well on me as he spoke of interactions with Ty Herndon, Glenn Tyler, David Archuleta, and a music producer whose name I can’t remember, all of whom are gay.
I was nominated for the Mortensen Award, which is the big award given each year by Affirmation. The bio they read about me had me simultaneously wanting to hide (thanks social anxiety), and also very proud.
After conference, I gave Nathan Mclaughlin, who is recently returned from his mission in Georgia, a ride over to Richard Ostler’s home so they could record an episode of Richard’s podcast Listen, Learn & Love. I got to sit in as they recorded the podcast, it was incredible to be there and witness that. For those who don’t know, Nathan organized Pride demonstrations at BYU-I in response to the reversal of the Honor Code change in 2020, and is the first missionary to come out publicly via social media, which he did with a Facebook post.
The day ended with me and several queer friends having dinner at the home of a family who are close to me. There is a wonderful story I want to share in more detail of a queer youth who came out to their ward that Sunday, and was invited to come over for dessert with me and my queer LDS friends. It shows that our Heavenly Parents love their children, all of them, and organized a special queer welcoming committee for this wonderful trans daughter.
The night ended when it was time for me to head to the airport and catch a midnight flight to Florida.

Favorite Actors: Kevin Kohler, Greg Mowry, Ray Shell, Sean McDermott, & Max Rizzo!
Favorite Songs/Scenes: Indefinitely Engine of Love.
Favorite Costumes: errrr…i’ve re-evaluated my insight on certian costumes. and now my favorite would probably be the new sparkly chest-box that Post-2018 Rusty has in “I Am The Starlight”.
because boy oh boy, do we really need to have this distinctly special relationship involving him and the starlight more clear. :))
Favorite Ships:
Rusted Brakes
Steam Press
Headcanons:
He hates scary movies...
He’s a book nerd :)) He loves to get philosophical over everything he reads. (non-derogatory)
I view him to be well-versed in astrology for a long time, but also laden with some trust issues with whom he feels comfortable bringing that side of himself amongst. So he’s more comfortable bringing up anything oriented to astrology with Poppa, Momma, Belle, Pearl, Dinah, & Dustin.
Unpopular Opinions:
I feel that the post-2018 staging of “I Am The Starlight” could have been re-thought, and re-hashed a bit more.
Some of you are free to correct me if I am wrong. BUT, time and time again, I have seen how Kevin Kohler is the only actor that never gets burnout over playing Rusty multiple times. We all have our own preferences over StEx actors we enjoy seeing. But even when it comes to Rusty actors, when was the last time we ever came across a young, 20-something, or 30-something, never getting tired of playing a character multiple times?
I am 100% fuming over the fact that there is no video, or audio boot, of Ben Draper covering for Rusty….that’s it. :))
#City23 Update - End of January: Nottingham and Cape Crescent
Crossposted to Cohost
I've written about my #City23 projects here and on Cohost. You can check out my last post.
I took a weeklong break due to a death in the family, so this is the my end-of-January post.
Nottingham
My previous posts introduced the Three-Foxes Inn, which I later decided was near the Bar Gate and Chapel Bar area. The gate heads toward Derby and the forests and hills to the Northwest. The Three Foxes is owned by Madame Jarry and two of her three sons. I added an alewife who makes the inn's brews, couple of other residents: Colman who murders strangers in order sustain his wife's life, Ruhl the Baker who does favors for the sheriff in order to protect his daughter (a sheriff's hostage), and the informal mendicants Earnmund and Mindred, clairvoyants and necromancers who exchange prophecies for money and live on the estate of a local priory.
I started last week by adding a Gruffin's Candle Shop to the Chapel Bar area, adding three NPCs who work there: - Gruffin of Clun, sometimes called "Old Clun," the owner, an apparently immortal wax magician who makes candles, spell candles, and magical waxen masks and figures. - Vel, his oldest apprentice, a young man who rarely speaks, but can be heard singing at night as he practices his magic. - Yvaine, his younger apprentice, an escaped aristocrat who disdains the notion of gender and has a talent for burglary.
I've also gone back to the Three Foxes and added a few details: - A random list of customers, including a shy trans tough, an outgoing trans harper, a prostitute, a farmer who's having prophetic dreams, a former Templar, and a German scholar-turned-Nottingham-pastrymaker. - An aristocrat living secretly as Azela's apprentice alewife.
Finally, I've added Godfrey Draper (secretly an agent of the sheriff): a brutish lout of a guard who's playing the fool to lure people into becoming careless about their support of their forest outlaw heroes.
Cape Crescent
This week in Cape Crescent, I've focused on the Lunar Lounge, a queer nightclub near the shore, popular with locals and tourists alike. - Drag Duo and owners Trent Keith (Pearl Dyver in drag) and Sylvia Herrera (Manor Bourne in drag) are also member of a local wolf pack who are concerned about the designer drugs that the Ghost Bay Foundation seems to be introducing to the town's nightlife. - Immortal bartender Griffin Declan who shifts his identity (and sometimes his face) every decades or two. - Go-go dancer Chance Reyes who has an innate (and unwanted) talent for necromancy. - Barback Kevin Phillips, who ran away from home and found a strange book that contains the spirit of Tarlton Caine's own runaway claivoyant son (who doesn't want his dad). - Several customers you might meet on the dance floor, including Dr. Jenna Caine (Tarlton Caine's oldest child and mentee), an out-of-work actor, a new resident who caught their ex-husband cheating and came to Cape Crescent for a new life, a Ghost Bay Foundation tech writer, the managing editor of the local paper, and a drug-dealer.
Reading
This week I also started working my way through some classic city-focused adventures and supplements from games of yore. Right now, it's Flying Buffalo's CityBook I: Butcher, Baker, Candlestick Maker.
Coming Up
In Nottingham, I think it's time to shift and get into the sprawl of Nottingham Castle. Over in Cape Crescent, I'll figure out whether the best thing to start next is exploring Tarlton Caine's organization or the Ghost Bay Foundation's off-shore HQ.
#congratulations. it took you nearly ten years to see what anyone with common sense could see from the start

Imagine Ava proposing to Beatrice with an engagement ring that has a divinuim stone in it so it glows every time Ava is near. Both Beatrice and Ava think it's super romantic and nobody has the heart to tell them that to people not familiar with divnium this looks as if Ava put a cheap LED light on a ring. And then one day Beatrice's mother sees it and for the first time in her life she finds something even more offensive then her daughter's homosexuality. Tacky jewelry!?!? Completely unacceptable

So here is the idea. A Xena reboot but there is a twist. The pilot starts and it's Lucy Lawless and Renee O'Connor having a cute lunch date in present time. Suddenly they start reminiscing about the good old days and bham. The entire first episode of Xena starts airing. And that's the entire concept of the the reboot. Every episode opens up with an immortal married Xena and Gabrielle in present time doing cute couple things for two minutes as an excuse to remember something and we just go straight to airing an old Xena episode. Completely unchanged except for one thing. Kevin Sorbo is digitally removed from all episodes and replaced with Charlize Theron

I feel like we don't talk enough about just how amazing Ava and Beatrice story line has been. Ava is a deeply deeply traumatized person. She has spent her whole life being essentially a prisoner who suffered daily abuse. She had no agency, no freedom just a vile old woman telling her all the time how she is broken, how she is a burden. The only friend she had was a child himself. The squatters she had were nice but that's just what they were nice. And the boy was hot but it was blatantly obvious that as far as Ava was concerned it was just about sex and adventure
But then came Beatrice and the first thing she did was call Ava out in her bullshit but it was not done in a malicious way and I feel that Ava could feel the enormous difference between Beatrice calling her out and the vile nun who abused her her entire life. And then this fucking scene, Ava was having a full on breakdown and instantly sought comfort and Beatrice was there. Quite likely the only person who has hugged Ava and offered her real comfort for more then a decade. And then it just got more and more intense as Beatrice just kept caring, kept supporting Ava. And also kept her calling her out which I think is something Ava really appreciates because she can she that Beatrice is doing it because she believes in Ava not because she wants to hurt her
But the effect is not just one sided. Look at Beatrice reaction in this gif. How stunned she is that someone is seeking comfort in her. We don't know much about her past but we know enough to form a reasonable theory. Look at the very first episode and how Mary treated Beatrice, generally how Beatrice acts with her Sister Nuns. She is friendly but you can feel the distance and based on her breakdown it's clear that her parents were deeply homophobic and knowing how cruel kids can be it's quite likely that she was shunned not only at home but in school as well making her closed, always keeping her distance so she won't get hurt again. And then comes this adorable idiot who pretty much burst through her walls, who sees her for what she is and still calls her beautiful instead of shunning her
How could they not fall for each other?

My #1 post of 2022
Supergirl writers: A surprising amount of people ship Kara and Lena . I suppose we could give them some more scenes together. Strictly friendship of course but still enough to keep those shippers on the hook
Pitch Perfect writers : A crazy amount of people ship Beca and Chloe . Let’s put a few comedic scenes of them to keep them on the hook
Warrior Nun writers : A lot of people ship Ava and Beatrice so we are thinking … let’s go hard for it in season 2 . I am thinking …. . Ava and Beatrice are roommates working in a bar together . We will start with them pining for each other and being insanely jealous whenever they see someone else speaking with them . Also of course we will have them just be happy and dancing together and being so lost in each other’s eyes you could clearly see the unspoken love . Now for episode two …..
