ok but the reason the kotlc love triangle works is because its a natural progression and sophie isn't in love with both boys at the same time. she's not dividing romantic energy between both Keefe and Fitz. she's giving Keefe platonic vibes, Fitz romantic. Maybe she really loves Keefe, deep down, but she's not loving him at the same time, in the same way, she's not dreaming about kissing him under the stars, not giving him her thoughts like that, her time like that, he flirts with her but she doesn't actively try to flirt back. that's the only reason it works. at all. because it's her crushing on fitz, and then them breaking up, naturally, NOT BECAUSE SHE'S IN LOVE WITH KEEFE. That was barely an element of their breakup, and if it was it was Fitz's jealousy that Sophie has friendships. Like, if it was a classic love triangle, Sophie would have been kissing Keefe, having deep heart to hearts, and all that jazz, showing up to places with him all the time, dancing with him, stuff like that. She doesn't. And that's why the love triangle in kotlc works. because it's not about hurting two boys to get what you want. it's about treating them like people and respecting them and their feelings and it's a natural progression, the fitzphie relationship matters, extremely deeply, to Sophie, it's not something she's willing to mess around with, she places it on a high pedestal, wants to work on it, work through it, and she loves!!! like fitz deserves!!! they're not right for each other, sure!!! their personalities don't fit together right!!! but they treat each other like they're people!!!! and it's!!! okay!!! and its messy, sure!!! but at least they are devoting their romantic attention wholly to each other!! like ugh this is why i can stand the kotlc love triangle but every other one makes me want to throw myself directly into the sun.

there's just something about fitz vacker, a boy who was once considered perfect and the ideal boy for both girls and boys to finally snap and attempt to murder his brother. his brother who he has looked up to his whole life, his brother who betrayed him and the people he loves.

can you imagine realizing that your own brother participating in harming and torturing your friends and the girl you love? and then, your parents decided to give the traitor another chance simply because he lost his memory, as if that erased everything he's done. and if THAT wasn't enough, you were forced to go along with it.

alvar should've died. the scene where fitz stopped pressing buttons was a huge character development for him and I'm tired of people dissing it purely because of the love triangle.

fitz has done some pretty questionable things but he deserves to be angry. maybe don't direct the anger at his friends but he deserves to have a mental breakdown and scream and cry just as much as keefe.

listen, i love shannon and the book series is amazing! but girly has GOT to learn to plan out the gist and vibe before making a love triangle which ruins a character

Just saying, but using the issue of Sophie not wanting to give up her last name as a reason to say she and Fitz wouldn't work is a little weak. She's already blazed a lot of trails - she could just blaze a new one and become the first elf to have a hyphenated last name. It's not that complicated.

You know what we should normalize in YA fiction?

Love triangles that ACTUALLY CONTRIBUTE SOMETHING TO THE STORY.

Like, the hunger games gets ragged on a lot for its unnecessary love triangle, but the boys represent katniss choosing a life of war and anger or a life of peace and hope. Gale=war, Peeta=peace. The boys are their own characters, and the love triangle does get annoying at times, but it still adds to the themes of the trilogy.

I found my Keeper of the Lost Cities books, which is what got me thinking about this in the first place, and wouldn’t it have been cool if shannon messenger went that route with fitz and keefe? Like, Fitz represents Sophie’s old life, the pressures other people put on her (and that she puts on herself), etc., with Keefe representing a new life for her and freedom to discover who she is outside of being a prodigy/moonlark, etc. I just wasn’t getting that vibe reading the books. (And I’m a big supporter of forgetting that Dex ever had a crush on Sophie. Platonic Sodex for life).

Also, Sodex is a stupid ship name, I’m sorry.

Idk I usually put down a book as soon as it shows signs of love triangles, so I don’t know many others, but yeah. Screw meaningless love triangles that only exist to add “tension” to a story that can’t stand on its own, thank you. :)
