HIIII :) here to ask about the abyss tell me about it please please please love this sort of thing :3

HAIIII welcome :) to preface this im normal i swear. anyway The Abyss is what i like ta call my Horrible Horrible Maze, i made it w/ the goal of making the worst possible experience in minecraft to torment my friends ^_^

I enjoy putting people in situations and studying them :D 

On that note! everyone who runs the abyss (24 people at current count) I time and write a couple notes on them! the abyss is honestly half maze half personality test LMAO. at current moment the quickest time goes to @ghostpajamas with a baffling 03:24 (wild that he got out so quick, i win tho cause i haunt his dreams), and longest goes to the beloved @rendogdomesticated with 1:35:54 <3 special shout out ta my dearest @theoctagon tho wolff ur insane i love u. guy goes inta the abyss for fun and has like 10 pages and counting of insane person phsyical notes tryna map it out (hes reported that hes gone through the first one 60 times and the 2nd one 5 jesus chriiiistttt). the abyss is fond of Pilot :) also if wolff is the favourite than @potionofinstantdamage is the Least favourite, rude ass set the place on fire when he got stuck in there :( oof ouchie

Highlights from my notes include @quack-city running backwards and upon me asking Why, simply replied “what if there’s slenderman :(‘ ... cant argue w/ that! he also hadda stop mid run so we decided its funnier if he’s just stuck in there forever. @newtbeetle was in there for like an hour and would NOT shut up about Paul Dano the whole time which was a time (love u beebs. ur isnane). my two test runners are @kishdoodles and @officialgleamstar and they had about the same time but like Opposite reactions it was very funny, kish treated it like they were a streamer n kept a like constant chatter, and travvy was like DEAD silent the whole time n Intensely focused akjewkjr tbh outta all 24 runners trav’s been prob the most like, methotical bout it? LIKE I SAID personality test. i Love studying people. 

In regards to its origins I came up w/ the idea back in like feb/march ish of this year and from start to finish it took me like 2 weeks ish i was on the Grind. u dont understnad how much black concrete this thing took. hell on earth,,, darkwoods has an economy/shopping district and i bought out like All the sand/gravel available akjwekjr the rest i hadda gather myself n God gravel sucks. also ive killed So Many Squids. the 2nd abyss was much easier ta gather supplies for cause i could ask for help w/ supplies n i kept the first one a Complete secret minus my test runners (i hadda bitch at SOMEONE while makin it or i wouldve died i think. speakin of the first abyss has a death count of 13 and the 2nd one has like, 5 or somefin? rlly shouldve writen that down akjwerjk those are Entirely me dying in the process of buildin them btw. its not a true Spain Build unless its mildly dangerous <3) The 2nd one also made me learn redstone, notably i specifically studied Tango’s decked out process vids from s7, tho i really only stole like two aspects of it n i couldnt even get one ta work properly LMAO

The second abyss took me like, wayy longer ta make, bout two months ish (i finished it like mid july). not necessarily in actual like, time spent building but cause in the process of makin it i had Two month long events i was in (Voiceteam in may and Art fight in july) so that distracted me a bit wkwnekeneie Im a bit more secretive bout the second abyss in general since not That many people have actually ran it compared ta the first n theres actually like, Things that can be spoiled in there <3 i like seein peep’s initial reactions its much more satisfying.

This didnt happen w/ everyone but i think a like, Core part of running the abyss is getting emotionally attached ta weird things. i wouldve said just torches until a few days ago when Tac (onea the rat server mods) ran it and claimed the stack of pumpkin pies i gave her as family. But Prior Ta That several people have had very intense emotions bout the redstone torches, whether love or hate or both, key example ft dog: 

Also not everyone ive mentioned on this post is in darkwoods! ive got a server i world editted the abyss inta so non-server members can run it for fun and profit (more data for me) :) on that note ive been slowly infecting the rat gang server cause my friend’s in there alot n another friend of mine’s a mod so peeps in there’ve been runnin it lately :) shout out ta TalonMC for lettin me subject him ta the Horrors literally our first conversation, onea my more fun first impressions i’d say

In regards to lore the abyss is a parasitic entity that infects anyone who gets stuck in there n slowly compells them ta go build their own lmao. note that ive only called the second abyss the Second one and not Abyss 2, because its technically just The Abyss as well cause theres many of them i just made it second wowjdkenejd (a real example of this is Wolff gettin obsessed w/ the abyss n then goin n buildin his own build called the Tower :) very excited bout that) The Abyss has a weird like fucked up warlock bond w/ my goddess oc The Overseer :D Her design’s vaugely based off my irl friend @hotcollectionoftubs cause her creation The Hole on a creative world her n some other friends of mine are on was onea the main insperations for certain aspects of the abyss’ lore :D mainly the teal in the colour palette and the whole ‘the [hole/abyss] provides’ thing.

my darkwoods chara, Snake, is a whole nother bag entirely (basic gist is they’re a dimension traveler not by choice and darkwoods is the 3rd world theyve been in, their deal’s worth a whole post of its own lmao) i built the first abyss entirely unrelated ta my chara just as like, fun weird build ta torment my friends w/o yaknow? but then as i was buildin the 2nd one i was like hmmmmmm. alotta things could make sense if i made this one built by Snake. so their retirement arc on darkwoods turned inta even MORE trauma! wahoo! poor guy deserves a break,,, (he will not be getting one). 

(pre abyss + post abyss. i gotta properly draw pre-darkwoods Snake at some point but this dudes changed Alot ill say that lmao. both crops from bigger pieces on my art blog @fluxydrawings)

okay but it is actually insane that Light was like 'I'll pretend to be L' and then proceeds to imitate him almost exactly. like. he's yotsuba-d he doesn't remember why he's so fixated on the mannerisms and speech of this guy he's chained to but he knows that he can copy him down to the way he forms a sentence, to the faux polite knife in the back threats. no wonder L immediately afterwards is like 'okay, Kira'. they know each other, even when Light has forgotten who he was. on an unrelated note everyone go listen to playing his game.

not only i do not subscribe to the idea that Watari imposed L's role on the wammy’s residents (for different reasons) or that wammy’s was created just for L, but I also don't understand how that would work. Mello and Near are from the fourth generation (debatable but regardless, they don't seem to be from the second) and if they are the successors, it means that the people chosen from the prior generations either died or decided to back down. It's highly unlikely that everyone died, and if they decided to back down, that simply means that people can just do so, which goes against the most common headcanon in this fandom. I could accept that they all went into hiding, if only it weren't for the fact that Mello, Near and L are highly competitive individuals so there must be someone before Mello and Near that wanted to be L, especially because the way Wammy’s is structured leads to competitiveness. So what happened to those people, that at the time L dies are mostly adults? I think they would surely be the first choices, just because they are older. They don't even have to be individually the smartest people, because they can work together. I will always think that A and B's generation is also L's, so it would make sense that after A's death, the project was put on hold for a while, so nobody was actually chosen from the 2nd and 3rd generation (still debatable - do they actually exist or Mello’s came immediately after?). They probably weren't even introduced to the idea of a successor programme, so they had no idea of that, and only after, as L was getting more well known (and maybe even after B's attempt to ruin him or whatever he wanted to do) or when he started the Kira case, the successor programme was reinstalled. Still, no one is forcing anyone to be L. Near and Mello want to win, to be him. As Mello could just walk out of the Wammy’s, they could also say, fuck no, but they didn't. True that the Wammy’s could idolise L, but if we take as canon what he said to the kids and the fact that some began to dislike him, he doesn't want to be seen as an idiol and the kids are not brainwashed into thinking that.

?! Why do you think Mello admires or looks up to L so much? Or do you disagree with that notion entirely/think this is a misinterpretation of his character?

Hmm. Well it definitely seems like he does going by the first scene we meet him in at Wammy's. And obviously it was just kind of a straight forward hero worship sort of thing? He was raised to see L as an untouchable ideal that he was competing to become, basically. But my interpretation of Mello's character going by the manga alone was sort of that he did a bit of a switcheroo with Near about this later on, after the time skip. As in it seems kind of like Near didn't care about L as a kid but then grew to care about/respect L more after he took on his role. And Mello went from really caring about L as a kid to never really outright mentioning or thinking about L again once as an adult. It seems to me much more like Mello's motivation was one about proving himself capable of winning on his own, and fixating on beating Near, than it was about still obsessively hero-worshipping L. This is an unpopular opinion in the fandom though, especially if you're including stuff like Mello's Another Note novel narration in your characterization of him (which I typically don't).

This translation screws with me so much..

In the dubbed version L refers to himself as a monster (which does give about the same connotation, considering his childhood, recognition of oddities in himself & all the things his mere existence makes him responsible for, according to the nightmares), but having him refer to himself as an 'idiot' is just heartbreaking.

The suggestion that even L knows no better. He's anxious about the truths even he's a stranger to. Fears of betrayal, as his job relies on other people following his orders and providing for him respectively. The fact that he's merely human, and a flawed & emotional one at that.

Also for anyone who might not realize what this scene is: It shows Wammy's House's handling of setting a touchable goal for the orphans. L himself makes it a point to not present himself as some kind of mysterious diety, but rather a big brother of sorts, who's cool, although you don't see him a lot. The kids holding themselves to too high standards is something L personally strives to avoid. In other words: Spare them his burden.

BUCKLE UP BOYS IT'S TIME FOR MY TRUE SUCCESSOR MELLO RANT ❤️‍🔥

You do not have to agree with me but you do have to LOOK and ABSORB the incoherence of my thought process to understand where I'm going with this OKAY LET'S GO

The main line of this theory of mine is that, had he been given the time to choose a successor, L would've chosen Mello. To preface this: Near is my absolute favorite character. I adore him. I shake him like beans and squish him like a teddy bear. My freaky little snowball man 🤍 This theory has nothing to do with me disliking Near or seeing him as less intelligent or unworthy. Cool? Cool.

Now, canonically speaking if you don't take the events of LABB as canon then you won't put much stock in this point, but one of the reasons I believe this is because Mello was the only one that L spoke to personally. I don't think either Mello or Near ever met L in person, but from what little Near says about L, it doesn't seem like he ever spoke to him either. It seems like Mello was the only one bestowed the privilege of speaking with L one on one, even if it was just to be told a cautionary tale. This implies that L was at least somewhat personally invested in Mello's development. This is link 1.

My own beliefs of this implying that L liked Mello more notwithstanding, my BIGGEST reason for believing in True Successor Mello™ is that Mello is not afraid to go after what he wants. His brashness and grayed morality is something L would appreciate, because it is mirrored by L himself. Near plays very by the book—he may manipulate and trick, but ultimately when it comes down to it, he keeps his hands clean. His moral compass may not be completely on track but it's definitely very rigid. Mello, on the other hand, is far more flexible. He is willing to do anything to solve a case. This is something that I think L would've seen as a core quality; the solution of the puzzle justifies the means, no matter how,,,,unorthodox. It doesn't matter how elegantly you scripted out the problem, it matters if you got the fucking answer. Granted, wit does play a part in this too—L would rather discover the answer himself than be told, but he also knows that sometimes discovering the answer means torturing it out of the mouths of your opponents :)

Out of the two of them, Near may have been more physically (and even intellectually) similar to L, but Mello's character mirrors L far more closely than Near's does.

(Now, here you could argue a point that L would actively dislike the successor more physically like him because he would see it as someone attempting to replicate him like as consumer product instead of an actual person, but I personally do not believe this because I honestly do not believe L gave much of a shit about the successor program either way and would only interfere or give it thought when Watari encouraged or demanded it of him SO MOVING ON).

Another thing I think would be a big point in L's decision to choose Mello as his successor is just. The fact that Mello wanted to be L. He fought for it with everything he had, he was passionate about it, he desired it—the title, the status, the prestige, the lifestyle. Mello wanted to be L! And while I do think the competition was important to Near in his own way, I don't think it was because Near actively wanted to become the next L. I think that the reason the competition mattered to Near wasn't because of L; it was because of Mello.

Near wanted to win! But not because he wanted L's title or to be the next Great Detective—he wanted to win because it was a matter of pride. It became a game between he and Mello, one that Mello kept consciously escalating, to the point that not only was the goal becoming L, but earning L's approval as well. The few times we see Near smile or look amused tend to be when the competition between he and Mello to catch Kira is mentioned. "The race is on." Near didn't care about being L—he cared about beating Mello at whatever game they happened to be playing then.

But Near was distinctly lonely as L. Even lonelier, I think, than the original L was. Solving the world's puzzles and being the Great Detective didn't bring him joy and satisfaction; if anything, he seems rather depressed. Aimless. Being L does not fulfill him because I don't believe that was ever what he wanted.

And L would notice that. L would take one look at Near and Mello's rivalry and be able to parse out the fact that Mello was the one who wanted his title, and that Near didn't care for the title as much as the challenge. He'd be able to tell that Near didn't actually want it. And if you're going to give someone a responsibility, would you yeet it at the kid that doesn't seem interested in it, or would you give it to the kid that's been working for it and preparing to receive it practically his whole life? The most logical decision would be to give it to the kid that actually wants it, rather than the one that seems resigned to it. I think Near would've been a lot happier doing literally anything else.

(Or just being L by Mello's side because then the game would've continued and the challenge would still be there and it would be constant and neverending so he would always be entertained and stimulated but that veers a little too much into Meronia territory so I digress—)

Now, the caveat to this is that, again, this is only after L has time to choose. Meaning that I don't think L would've chosen Mello at the time of his death because I don't think he'd gotten to know any of them well enough to make a decision then. But in any AU where he doesn't die and I'm not writing Meronia then I'm convinced that L would've chosen Mello as his successor. And I think this would be the happier outcome for everyone involved, because Mello would've gotten what he wanted, Near would've been free to pursue other avenues of interest (that he might've actually enjoyed), and Mello is headstrong enough that L would barely have to teach him anything. He is free from Watari's insistence on his interference forever 🙏 It is now Mello's job to mitigate, which he does with...about as much grace as L lmao.

Anyway, TLDR: L took a more personal interest in Mello, Mello mirrors L's methods and character more closely than Near, and Mello's desire to be L surpassed Near's by a significant margin. True Successor Mello reigns. 👑🔥

They may have serious issues because this orphanage is insanely fucked up but all they have is each other. They've grown up together and despite the fact that they would rather die than admit it (aside from Matt he's chill) they actually do care about one another when push comes to shove. It shows in subtle ways. Or I'm just projecting idk. I just don't think these three can grow up in an environment like THAT and not end up finding comfort in each others' presence. (By the way there's almost no scenes of all of them together since Matt was introduced pretty late so I'm gonna use fanart. Credit goes to rindou02 on tumblr.)
