It is the one thing to understand a language,
it is another to speak it, and
it is yet another to analyze it.
Usage of these skills in creation yields art.
Mastery of all three yields great art.
From ep 46 of WWW "Their Sorrow is My Sorrow:"
"...the forms of the Man in Black are facets of a diamond, the trees of a forest; they are faces of a Truth. No less true in each and every instance, for representing but not being the whole. The Man in Black's True form does not lie in this world, but rather in the Spirit, and it may be that his true form, much like the center of a diamond, can only ever be seen through its facets, that you will never see his True form, but maybe one day, you will understand it."
This is Great Art.
This is Literature.
This is Philosophy.

I've been kinda asking my gods to give me a sign this summer (and weakly asking last year or so) by seeing a Lunar moth....
but last night had a very distinct dream of a small tiny Lunar moth and holding it in my hand and my entire hand tingling with this. idk energy, like seltzer bubbles - wtf .... coursing through my entire arm. even in my dream I got down on my knees in reverence......
Chat.......

Someone: what religion are you/what do you believe?
What I think: I’m somewhere between a soft polytheist and a pluriform monotheist. Maybe henotheistic. Sort of hellenic, but open to other pantheons. I like the idea of a Mother Nature type entity, but more in a panentheistic way. But also not mother as in female or woman, mother as in it’s the easiest way for my human mind to conceptualize a being that is everything and nothing.
What I say: I’m pagan

Whenever I meet people that can only identify the most basic types of relationships like "friends", "lovers", MAYBE if I'm lucky "mentor and mentee" or even "found family" (just don't get me started on the whole "if they're sworn brothers, romantic relationship between them is incest" spiel), every time I honestly am sad for them.
I can't imagine my life without being achingly in love with a witch girl from my pack, knowing she loves me back just as well as I know we will never share more than a single cheek kiss, myriads of minutes spent holding hands and countless poems I wrote and she kept. This is not friends or lovers, this is love that exists in its own way.
I can't imagine my life without sighing after a pretty Arlequin with the most beautiful eyebrows and a cheeky grin, knowing you will never be on the same level and being genuinely happy to stay like a loyal adoring dog at his feet. This is not friends or mentor and mentee, this is love that exists in its own way.
I can't imagine my life without latching onto a big brother that didn't know your name when you already sensed he's going to be your big bro in the frightening new step of your life. Knowing it won't be as special for him, but he'll be the best big brother you could ask for, after you strike a conversation by telling him a fun fact about whale songs. This is not friends or found family, this is love that exists in its own way.
I can't imagine my life without feeling like broken mirror shards laying on the asphalt of a secluded town outskirts road, soaked in someone's rain and knowing that this person you call himinn minn will forever be just that - your unreachable, elusive rainy summer sky. Even in a cold, lonely winter. Exchanging words of love and hot whispers, feverish fantasies over their portaits, talking into the void they left after disappearing - and still knowing it all was the most beautiful of loves shared mutuially. This isn't lovers, this is my sea being in love with their sky, and this love exists in its own way.
I can't imagine my life without running away from the dystopian reality of grey panel buildings and people talking to butchers, so fucking alone, cold and filled with bitter cigarette smoke, only to find myself a hundred years back, in the body of a Silver Age poet falling in love with a fellow runaway in Paris, the one that hears him when no one else does. Knowing the promise "Я все равно тебя когда-нибудь возьму — одну или вдвоем с Парижем." is just that, a promise, and it's enough. This is not friends or lovers, this is love that exists in its own way.
Yearning, devotion, solace, connection, accidents that stay with you for life, worshipping, inspiring, leading, soothing, peace, rebellion. Heart bursting with acrylic paints and calm humming of a habit.
There are so many ways people get with other people. I pity those that had only ever known the basics, but I do hope that they're happy like this.
I am happy with my collection of people that I can only ever name by their nicknames, because I can never refer to them as friends, lovers, internet acquaintances.

This may be a bit underbaked bc I'm not a history expert, but I do believe that if you must view the Pointed Hats as analogous to any single real-world group, it would be the Christian church during the medieval period in Europe. They're somewhat sequestered from the general population (the Great Hall and ateliers vs. the Vatican and monasteries); have near-exclusive access to certain important information (the truth about magic vs. the language of the Bible and much of historical record) and the means of media production (Silverwood ink and casting seals vs. the labor and resources to copy manuscripts); are supported by taxes but do not seem to pay any (ch. 48); are relied on to perform individual charity, general social services, and paid services for feudal lords and monarchs (a central tension in ch. 39 and much of the Silver Eve arc); and of course, are punitive towards heresy and apostasy to the point of having a specialized judicial branch to root out sinful witches (the Knights Moralis vs. the Inquisitors, who are often depicted in similar colors).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
WHA's setting is clearly inspired by the medieval period in its aesthetics and worldbuilding, but it doesn't include any organized religions (iirc) because the secular Pointed Hats roughly fulfill that role, including as moral arbiters for this society. Knowing that can also clarify the position of forbidden magic in the story as not just crime, but sin (as defined by Pointed Hat dogma). Despite sharing the name of "witch," Pointed Hats aren't at all comparable to witches as they were understood in the medieval period, while the Brimhats are functionally the witches in this analogy. They are marginalized thanks to their heretical beliefs and/or sinful practices (esp in cultivating knowledge preceding and/or contradicting the current world order) and offer a precarious alternative to the stifling conformist institution of the Pointed Hats.
Now, if you're reading this and going, "Hmm, okay, but WHA puts the Pointed Hats in a generally positive light and shows them as being far less violent, corrupt, and oppressive than the actual medieval Church, while also playing the Brimhats pretty straight as borderline demonic criminals rather than unfairly marginalized heretics or political targets," I think that's a good line of thought to follow! It's similar to the "does WHA actually say ACAB or do you just like Shirahama" debate but a bit more accurate to the Pointed Hats' actual role in this fictional society, imo (because as I've said in the past, I don't think WHA "says ACAB" by any metric, but I also think it's overly reductive to call the Knights "cops"). I also think this is a fun thought exercise if you, like Coco, fell in love with the sense of wonder and goodness around the Pointed Hats' magic, because we don't tend to look back in history and consider all the positive feelings the average person might've had towards the church, nor how radical and dangerous it would've actually felt to question them.

Not Ms. Zolita calling Fletcher’s depiction of bisexual cultural dysphoria (a well documented phenomenon) a “strange inversion” 😭😭😭 + saying “stream out lesbian artists” and then including Lucy Dacus and Janelle Monae (who both openly identify as bi/pan).
The Freudian slip of it all. 💀

Also, I said this while watching yesterday's episode but honestly if this was set in the West, they'd have burned Maomao at the stake for being a witch.
Not just because of her opinion or approach, not even because of her knowledge of medicine and poisons, or fascination with death.
No, simply because she looks at the world differently and strives to understand how it works.
Recreating the conditions that led to the warehouse explosion to explain to Lihaku what happened? Immediate witchcraft branding right there.
Figuring out that the make up powder was poisonous and building a steam bath to help purge the poison. Figuring out why the binding agent in the paper production wasn't working. Deciphering the will and figuring out how to unlock the chest of drawers. Figuring out how to make roses bloom out of season by taking the steam bath she built and turning it into a hot house. Dyeing the roses different colours.
She's so intensely smart because she doesn't look at the world the same way everyone else does and I'm just really glad that more than one person in her life appreciates that about her.

it kind of makes me crazy when new witches keep trying to fit themselves into these neat little easy categorizing boxes of "what type of witch" they are. i feel like i keep seeing new witches go "i work with crystals AND herbs, can i be a crystal witch and a green witch?" like please break yourself free from the shackles you put on yourself. forget about these labels. i know they're everywhere, because they're so easy to make cute little aesthetic bullet points with. please just do magic and not worry about labels!!

What is Hackle you ask? Hackle is a ship name referring to Miss Ada Cackle (Headmistress and Spells Teacher of Cackle's Academy) and Miss Hecate Hardbroom (Deputy Headmistress and Potions Teacher of Cackle's Academy) from the show Worst Witch (2017). In other words it's dem lesbian witches I keep drawing over and over. They got it all, loyalty, tenderness, THE CLOSENESS!! Just watch the first episode and you'll understand!
Is it worth watching? If you enjoy silly shows, cute dynamics, and all things that are witchy, then yes! But if you're not a fan of occasional bad writing and character development that will undoubtedly be forgotten the very next episode, this show might not be for you. Lol
All that being said have a cute little hackle wip that may or may not be an available sticker in the future!! 🤗💕
