It is 2:12am and I am laying on the ground after vomiting intermittently since 11:30pm. I think my laksa paste was too old.

I had one massive spew at 12 and felt so much better after and thought it was all over. I marveled at the ability of the body to feel bad -> expel poison -> feel better. Then I woke up at 1 and have felt hot and cold and awful since. I solemnly swear I will increase my food safety standards.

last song: i was going to have to give a sad little answer here about how i don't listen to music nearly enough anymore (never mind sing) and it's very definitely a reflection of my depression, but then i entirely out of nowhere and very urgently was like 'wait actually i have to listen to gordon lightfoot's "song for a winter's night" right now' so then i dashed off and did that and now that's the answer:

favorite color: oof so so many!! colors are so important. the signature one has gotta be a really highlighter-vivid chartreuse (🎾), but i do also really love me a good marigold orange? not to mention vermilion, or ochre, or moss green, or really saturated cobalt, or shades of rust or russet…

last movie/show: shetland bbc, which is a quiet well-acted murder mystery series set in a very beautiful very remote landscape. soothing if you like the british isles and can bear to entertain the fantasy of a decent policeman, at least for an hour or so at a time. also i admit to enjoying douglas henshall's face.

sweet/spicy/savory: all the best things are savory and also spicy! like. the jamaican curried chicken i grew up with. indian curries. malaysian laksa my beloved. can you tell i like curry. :D

relationship status: sidebar but this is such an amatonormative question lol. like why are we societally expected to look at 'relationship' and infer 'romantic.' also it seems like a weird outlier given that all the other qs are low-stakes little softballs abt yr tastes. however. extremely single! sometimes i'm sad about it because i miss sexual intimacy and i'm too shy to pursue that with strangers? but honestly most of the time i'm just as glad, because i don't actually know how to love people romantically without making a whole self-abnegating religion of it, so i'm not really convinced that dating was ever really all that good for me, on the whole…

last thing i googled: i use duckduckgo now, and you should too! :) having said that: 'yoal boat.' which is a very beautiful traditional style of shetland boat—apparently descended from a norwegian model?—that the islanders used to use for fishing, and then for storage draw up onto the land into these little prepared hollows called noosts (they have marinas now), which like. obviously i think is the most charming word imaginable. a cozy little noost for a lovely little boat! 🪺

current obsession(s): yoals aside, i guess the thing that best fits this category is that sometime in the last year or so i turned into Merino Guy??? like. even my boxer briefs are merino now (well, a merino-tencel blend) and like. it's so good, guys. comfy in a startlingly wide range of temps, helps me lessen my contribution to the microplastics problem, somehow even makes for reasonable athletic wear in the right weights and cuts: what's not to like. anyway brb, gotta go print out my 'NOT 🐑ISH ABOUT MERINO' bumper sticker. :D

Thurs 4th Jan

I went back to work on Tuesday but only worked from home which was a nice way to ease back into it bc the past 2 nights before travelling an hour to the office I've been sleeping like trash 😭 But I'm trying to use Christmas being over as a way to find more time for exercise ans also trying to be way less picky about what I do. Last night and tonight I've just hopped on the indoor bike before dinner so I get some cardio even if it's not for very long. Last night I did some core work and 30 mins on the bike. Tonight I only had time for 15 mins bc Matt had work to do so he needed an early dinner. It's done the trick though, anything is better than nothing and it's given me a little kick up the butt after sitting at a desk all day.

Been eating this delicious laksa with crispy swede and shallots for dinner the past couple of nights 😍

And finally ordered my wedding ring and booked an initial dress fitting for Saturday. I'm scared tbh but the lady seems nice and I'm determined to go by myself as I don't want either of our overly opinionated mothers telling me what to do with it. So I haven't told anyone other than Matt that I'm going. And I will take my time and make my own decisions between myself and the seamstress 😌 Next thing to look at is the ceremony and choose some readings. Slowly but surely getting there! Can't wait to try the ring on when it arrives 🥹

I made some laksa after buying some at pret and it came out good. Asda sells laksa paste and I have no idea if this is good for laksa paste

Obviously I've never had the authentic stuff but what I made was nicer than what I got from pret a manger a little while ago. I added some fish balls, wings and used vermicelli noodles

I was going to add shrimp but they went off 😔 and smelled like a foot

monster: Is your OC monstrous in any way? Is there something that makes them monstrous? Are they aware of their own monstrosity? Do they accept it or reject it?

At her core, Callie is not a monster. But she’s got the aftermath of Nyx in her brain and the inherent dark sides of simply being Irken. And when it comes down to it she doesn’t need either of those influences to wreck someone’s shit if they push her far enough, but it takes a lot more effort to get to that point. If Callie has gone too far and seriously injured or even killed an enemy, she feels intense regret and beats herself up over it, knowing deep down that that’s not her and that she’s just proving to everyone that she’s a stereotypical destructive Irken in the end. So in short, she’s very aware of how monstrous she can be and ultimately rejects it, but there are cases where she’ll just let it out if someone really deserves it.

This whole paragraph just proves I can’t make up my mind on her I think LOL

midnight: What keeps your OC up at night? Do they have nightmares? Fears? Anxieties? What do they do in the small hours of the morning when they should be sleeping?

Laksa is not the anxious type, but she is holding in a lot of hurt from the past that occasionally comes out in the form of nightmares and overthinking. Leave her alone for too long and her mind will wander to places she really doesn’t want to think about, and she’ll do anything to avoid feeling upset about the past - it can’t be changed after all. So if those thoughts come out overnight or in the early morning she’ll just go ahead and get up, and start organizing the medbay, reviewing charts, or find someone else who’s awake to hang out and chat with for a while until she’s got official work to do.

For sometimes needing to treat patients with coping skills and other therapy practices, she is SO BAD at taking her own advice and following what she knows is right. She totally doesn’t get enough sleep and bottling things up is NOT HEALTHY laksa you stop this now

Are you tired? Are you taking this survey because you can’t sleep?  Not very tired at all even if it's past midnight. I finally feel the calm that's been evading me for a while because 1) I have a long weekend, and 2) I can also finally stop fooling myself about resigning 'soon,' because I did it already a week ago :)

Do you have something important to do?  Not right now but I'll be doing a lot of job hunting in the next few weeks! Also tomorrow morning I'll be heading out to get my car checked because the handbrake icon has been lighting up for a while now and I need to know what's up with that lol.

Do you like Jalapeno Cheetos?  It tastes okay but I'm generally not a fan of packed snacks.

Do you wish you had a new phone?  No but I need to start taking care of my current phone, cos I learned today that the battery capacity left on it is at 77% which is apparently already horrible haha. I'm not in any rush to replace it at least until a year or two from now as it's still a fairly new phone, so it's just a matter of watching out for how much I use it going forward.

Do you like 80’s music? 60’s music? 90’s music?  I have songs I like from each decade but none of them stand out for me when it comes to music in general.

Do you find rap music annoying? Rap music, and any genre for that matter, is super broad though. There are albums I like but then there are those songs that can get superficial about drugs and sex and have a lot of autotune that just makes me go egh.

What song is stuck in your head?  I'm Fine by BTS because it was the last song I played on Rhythm Hive before closing the game earlier today lol.

Have you ever been to Germany? Never been.

Do you drink coffee in the mornings? I need to, otherwise I'd feel super disoriented and not be able to get as focused at work.

Have you ever seen a therapist?  I've never had a session with one, actually. Even though there were many times in the past where I know I should've.

Do you get in trouble at school often?  No. I got scolded once for talking during a class in Grade 4 and from there made it a point to never disrupt again haha.

Do you watch videos on YouTube?  All the time. Even if I don't watch a video per se, I like having YouTube on as background noise/visuals and keep it playing all day long.

What decade do you think is the best musically?  I'd be the worst person to ask this as I never really was an adventurous listener. I also feel like each decade has their own styles and charms when it comes to music so as far as 'musically best' I'd find it hard to tell.

Do you take a long time to get ready in the mornings?  I need around 30-45 minutes to prep before work. That includes taking a shower, making my bed, cleaning my room, playing with the dogs for a few minutes, and making coffee.

Do you wear a lot of makeup?  Does BB cream count? That's really the only thing I apply, and foundation. But yeah in general, the answer is no.

Have you ever written poetry or fiction?  I've dabbled in both but never enjoyed it. I was always one for non-fiction writing.

Do you know how to read music?  Nope. We had drills in music class where we had to read notes and such, but I never retained those and if you quizzed me right now I'd pretty much be clueless.

Do you regularly use a blow dryer?  I don't.

When was the last time you went to church?  Three Sundays ago. The last two I missed because I watched a public Royal Rumble watch party, then had a work event to oversee.

Laksa loosely based on this Ottolenghi recipe. I’ve made this many times back in Sydney. Here’s my thoughts

Couldn’t find vermicelli, used random egg noodles, this was good

Didn’t have half the spices so used a laksa paste as well as the aromatics. Don’t have a blender so I chopped the aromatics really fine. So this was a lot of work for a not nearly as good version. Probably paste and maybe ginger and garlic only next time, forget the onion.

Need to find a better coconut milk, got a random one in Aldi and I think it was less creamy than I’m used to

Couldn’t find tofu puffs so just sliced up some tofu, this was fine. I don’t expect to find tofu puffs I like here but maybe I’ll search next time I’m in Dublin (hoa hung tofu made in Belmore is the only one for me. Actually also the one that is in that pastel yellow and purple packaging that starts with Q. I forget what it’s called)

Beans good. Lime good.

It’s too much!!! I will halve the recipe next time but just put the whole coconut milk in coz I don’t want to deal with half a can of coconut milk. I think with the full recipe it is 5-6 serves.

Clothes-off eating appears to be another idiosyncrasy on a long list of oddities, fixations, and goof-arounds, and not at all because he fears getting curry on the good shirt and dress pants like he fears getting smacked on the hand with a clipboard. Ben’s usually infernally, deafeningly alone when he eats in his underwear, but over time, it’s become something he does around Beth, too.

He could have sworn he left back up at her place: one of the worst lounge sweaters of all time, and several tees, a clearance rack’s worth of cotton polyester. Beth, though, the little dryad cross-legged at her kitchen island, has spirited them away. Not returned them as claimed.

“This is a hostage situation now,” he says. “I’m negotiating with a criminal.”

Ben pulls at the legs of a stubborn prawn with a bit more force than needed, and broth hits the counter like blood spatter; the rest splatters his chest. Little orange flecks join the composition of moles on his lower breast. A bead of coconut soup rolls down his stomach, pooling in his belly button.

He looks down at himself, then up at Beth. The heat hits his face a little late in the game.

Her breath fans across his chest. Her hands settle on either side of his hips for balance. Least that’s what she’d tell him. And when she finally looks up? Eyes are half-lidded and dark. Woods at night far away from any artificial light. “Wha’? Dey come take my Kanaka card if dey heard I was wastin’ coconut li’dat.”
