"HA! Welcome to Thargelion yourself"
Haleth and her wife, facing a now slightly flustered Caranthir

This is something that’s been in my head for a while. So in my Lesbian Halenthir AU or really any other AU where Caranthir and Haleth have a long term relationship I feel like it’s a reasonable assumption that very few other elves knew about it. Maybe her brothers at most. Like Moryo kept it very much on the down low and tbh I don’t think she’d have regularly talked about personal topics with many people anyway so it wouldn’t have really come up. So just imagine she mentions it in passing after re embodiment at a family gathering. ‘Well my wife used to say-’ ‘YOU HAD A WIFE!? WHEN DID THIS HAPPEN?!’
And then she just kind of casually tells them that she got married to this badass Edain chieftain and they were together for like 10 years and very happy. And this is just a hard concept for a lot of people to get their heads around because Caranthir isn’t exactly good with or interested in people so they all sort of assumed she’d never get married to the point where they never even asked her about it. And now they found out that for a decent portion of the times they’d seen her on middle earth she’d had a wife to go back to or was mourning and none of them had picked up on it.
I also find the concept that while Aegnor was off having his tragic romance that’s so dramatic and narratively beautiful there’s Caranthir, the abrasive, antisocial, harshest and quickest to anger out of the Feanorians getting married in like three months and having a really sweet domestic relationship where they’re just genuinely happy and in love with each other just so hilarious.
Like you have Aegnor and Andreth kiss chastely at most before Aegnor leaves and it’s devastating because they can never go further because he is immortal and she isn’t and then we cut to Caranthir saying fuck the narrative and passionately making out with her butch mortal gf in a tent after a homoerotic sword fight. Even in her romantic choices Caranthir manages to accidentally send the biggest Fuck You to the Arafinweans and what’s truer to her character than that?

Lord Caranthir — if you must woo a mortal woman, may I suggest you choose one who is more receptive to a man’s wiles?

Caranthir, also known as Caranthir the Dark, was the fourth son of Feanor and the harshest and the quickest to anger of his seven brothers
Tumblr media
Haleth was the daughter of Haldad, leader of the Haladin (or Halethrim), one of the Three Houses of the Edain.
Head canons undercut
Caranthir was known to be the odd one of his family, and he felt something inside himself that he did not want to address, nor even acknowloge. However when he met Haleth, he thought her the most beautiful in all of Arda, despite her being in the race of men. His soldiers watched in awe as she was able quench his anger with ease, and match his with ten fold. He fell in love in less then a week, over the days they planned and aided in the rebuilding of the Haladins camp, and praised her valiance to the gall of Haleth. Caranthir was never good at making friendships easily, but with Haleth, they formed a fast and brazen connection, that sparked through his entire fea, and finally he felt as if someone understood him.
He offered her land and a courting proposal, but she refused. He was torn then, and asked why she had rejected him.
“I have no interest in men, but I do not find you distasteful. I am proud you see, and being together would only cause hardship; for both our peoples”
He and his company escorted her people to Estolad instead, and they began settling down. He often visited her land, for despite the failed marriage proposal, they became close still, but never past the confines of friendship, until something deep inside Caranthir changed.
One day when Haleth was braiding his hair, she surprised him by placinga braid in a style that is only used on women of her race. When he saw it, his heart lurched and for the first time in many centuries, he began to cry.
She had done it because she knew, that Caranthir was in the wrong body, before he himself had even realized it.
and he became a she.
They both finally dealt with their feelings that they had suppressed for so long, and they married in secret under the laws of the Haladin, and not of the Eldar.
Caranthir did not have too much body dysmorphia, she liked her prominent jaw line, and her male features. But on bad days she was able to talk and cry to Haleth without turning to anger and rage like she did before. No longer did she had to be mis-gendered, and her brothers took the news well, and braided a new family braid in her hair.
Yet Haleth grew old, and while Caranthir stayed in denial about her rising age, she suddenly was confronted with the gift of men....
mortality.
Haleth died while she was away in Thargelion, and her body was laid in a burial mound before she could even give her funeral rites. She visited her grave once, and never again, for her grief was described as a shadow, that it consumed the very light around her. Caranthir the dark fit her perfectly now. She became very fierce with the sindarin elves, and killed with little mercy in the second kinslaying.
She died in Menegroth; the thousand caves after being fatally wounded by Nimloth who stopped her from killing her young daughter Elwing. Her last words were to her brother Maglor, who told him to bring her body to Haleth’s grave to be buried next to her.
He did as requested, and beside Haleth’s overgrown grave, a new one was made.

I listened to the silmarillion while I was recovering from surgery so here are my thoughts.
Fingon and Maedhros are indeed gay
Who is Gil Galad’s mother? Is it Maedhros?
Haleth is a bad bitch and a lesbian and I want a whole book about her
Elrond is kinda the product of a lot of cousin fucking
And then he marries a cousin!
Turin Turanbar is a dick not sure what all the fuss is about
Feanor is also a dick-although I knew this already
Eol is a predator and I am not a fan. Poor Aredhel also poor Idril and Miriel
Likewise to Ar Pharazon
Sauron kinda cracks me up. Like I just picture him being constantly annoyed by Melkor’s disorganization and then continually failing himself is so fucking funny
Sauron getting his ass handed to him by Luthien was so good
“That wolf could be me”. Surprise dummy its not
Luthien is also a baddie. Queen I love her
I ship Galadriel and Melian. You can’t tell me Galadriel was staying in Doriath for Celeborn, not when there was a Maia queen right there
Luthien single handedly putting Melkor to sleep with her singing while Beren just sat there😂Iconic
Elrond and Elros may have some Stockholm syndrome
I want to hear more about the dwarves
Turin and Beleg are also gay
Did not anticipate the incest storylines. What is this Game of Thrones?
Long story short it was a bit darker than I anticipated but just as slow as I had heard but I’m glad I read it.

Obscure Tolkien Blorbo: Round 4
Haleth vs Andreth
Haleth:
The Chieftain of the Haladin who kept her people alive during a siege by orcs and later led them to the Forest of Brethil.
Love her so badass 😍
She's a badass good girl, proud and a lesbian queen (just trust me on that one)
Andreth:
A woman of the First Age, one of the central characters of the Athrabeth Finrod ah Andreth. In her youth she had a romance with Finrod’s brother Aegnor.
She's wise, she's angry, she's bitter, she's everything to me. Blorbo to end all blorbos.
Old philosopher woman who challenges elves about their understanding of reality
Round 4 masterpost

I still think the superior version of that ship would be Haleth x Galadriel. We should make it a thing and flood the tag with first age power lesbians lol
oh my god YEAH. You're a genius.

I would love to hear your Caranthir gender thoughts if you want to share
-@outofangband
Sure, it's actually one of my favourite things to think and talk about!
I generally headcanon them as genderfluid and I think they were still quite young when they found out that their hroa doesn’t always accurately represent their fea. In Aman they used to wear their hair down when they were feeling as a man and put their hair up in intricate braids to signal that they were feeling as a woman that day. Clothing wise they always wore a combination of stereotypically female and male pieces.
In Beleriand their gender expression became more of a political thing. After the revolt of the Noldor and the burning of the ships, the Feanorians had to appear as a unit, so no matter what their fea felt that day, Caranthir would never outwardly present themselves as a woman when they had to fulfill their role as Lord of Thargelion or one of the Sons of Feanor. They only expressed their true self with their family and trusted servants behind closed doors and later with Haleth and her people as the Haladin had a different understanding of gender roles than the Elves.
However, no matter what gender they are, they always give off rich lesbian aunt and goth boyfriend vibes. They remind me of Marlene Dietrich!

Not to be a lesbian in your inbox or anything but lately I've been thinking about Lúthien with a motorbike. Wearing full leathers, pulling off her snazzy midnight-blue helmet and her long hair tumbling down her back as she removes her sunglasses and gives us all a sexy wink.
PLEASE always feel free to be a lesbian in my inbox.
Also, this sounds sexy as fuck ngl Modern AU Luthien on her way to beat Sauron's ass. The women of Doriath and broader Middle-earth are swooning. Aredhel is frantically updating her fantasy Tinder profile. Galadriel is telling everyone she knows this woman. Haleth has the powerful urge to build her a deck.
Luthien would be one of those people who would somehow still have good hair even after wearing a helmet for hours. Gives it a little shake and she's got that Vogue windswept look. Even when she's sweaty she makes it sexy.

So I support Haleth/Caranthir
But lesbian Haleth is also awesome.
But funnier still:
May I propose lesbian Haleth, whose elvish is not great, and is used to men with beards as soon as they can grow them, and whose culture definitely has a “women sew and do accounting” bias, tripping head over heals into lust with the biggest, buffest elf lady she has ever seen, who clearly likes her back, and wants to protect her people, and did she mention BUFF?
And then while encouraging the advances of this beautiful beautiful lady, her elvish improved and she slowly realizes with horror: lord is not a gender-neutral term, and Lord Caranthir in her beautiful silks IS A BOY ELF.
And then she is so embarrassed she makes up some stuff about wishing to remain independent as a people and runs away and forms her Amazon warrior bodyguard unit. 😂
Or it turns out Caranthir has been closeted mtf her whole life and Haleth helps her find herself as a beautiful eleth and they have a very happy life together until that mortality thing gets in the way
