As someone who identifies as a genderfluid female, my hair is what expresses that the most. For a long time I've been blessed with hairstylists who were able to help me capture what they called a "fun and edgy" look. However, I always felt it was off the mark slightly. Ever since I started going to @atomichouseofhair and having @amberelaineofficial cut and style my hair, I have felt closer and closer to who I am with little direction to give her. Everyone at this place is very open and understanding to my LGBTQ+ status and it has been the best hair salon I've been to in this life. Hi everybody! I hibernated at home with my family by the fire over #Christmas. I had a grand three days playing with my niece, laughing with my family, unplugging from social media, and bingeing my favorite TV shows. … i want to love simply and beautifully and proudly. i want EVERYONE to know that my s/o is my world.

… but then strangers assume i’m straight. they always do. they ask if i have a boyfriend. and then i find myself caged back into this stupid little closet in the back of my mind, yearning to feel loved and accepted for something so innocent, so real, and oh so right.

discreetly i tilt my head down and force my eyes away from their expectant glances. i hide behind the long strands of my hair, and twiddle my fingers behind my back. this is not how i pictured it to be.

you told me, I was like orange juice and coffee my favorite thing and yours. you told me my eyes were the closest thing to home you ever found in this hometown you told me “selfishly, I hope you fall-” -and she did. Crazy that she painted screens with vulnerability she had never been brave enough to share. Crazy that they teased the distance between them with voice recordings that sounded sweeter thousands of miles away Crazy that an undefined something was the safest she’d ever felt in someone else’s heart.

And 2 months later there was an absence of poetry. 2 months and an absence of music on their playlist. 2 months and the notifications of prescheduled dates haunt her.

It was never suppose to be like this. And you saw her anyway.

And you left your heart in the trunk of your car. And she couldn’t find her reflection anywhere. Not in your eyes or the hands in your pockets. And she was paralyzed by this. She drove with all the windows down last night. She climbed a tree in her mother’s shoes. She reached for the moon and the city behind her. She had never felt so empty and so alive and so unfortunately in love with you. The screen no longer wants her vulnerability. A voice would be foolish to share. Strange how people are flung off-balance. How people can meet at the wrong time but also fall incorrectly. It’s strange how something as beautiful as falling can feel so dirty when it’s left to scream in silence. It’s sad that, with how beautifully you thought I wrote, I cannot make this pretty. That with all the growing I’ve done to find you, all I have are shaking hands and this poem.

You leave in two days. I will try to love you out of my system until then.

You leave in one day and I’ve never checked my phone more

You left. And I’m back, paralyzed in the parking lot you drove away from.
