A Jedi's Weapon

I've been thinking about Lightsabers recently. Everyone knows them, everyone likes them, and I'm pretty sure everyone reading this wanted one when they were a kid. But lately, I've been thinking about what they represent.

Lightsabers are weapons, yes, but it's not their only function. They are useful tools, and not only in combat, but in everyday life to light fires, to cut down the branches of trees when your travelling through a forest, etc. But most of all, I like the symbolism and the meaning they have for the people of the galaxy.

Everyone can pick up a blaster and shoot. And although aiming is harder, it's nowhere near the level of difficulty that achieving mastery in lightsaber combat is. Lightsaber dueling has several forms, all of them unique and useful depending on the situation and the individual, which is amazing if you think about it hard enough.

Blasters are almost always used to kill. Sure, there are stun blasters, and Jedi do seem to be able to use them when the situation calls for it (Obi-Wan killing Grievous with a blaster in ROTS immediately comes to mind). But, if you want to defend yourself with a blaster, the only thing you can do is shoot back, aka aiming for the kill, kill them before they kill you. That's why Luke using a blaster is portrayed as a sign that he's not a Jedi yet, that's why Ezra using a blaster instead of reconstructing his lightsaber/blaster hybrid is used to signify a dangerous shift in his thinking.

Lightsabers are dangerous, yes, but the greatest danger doesn't come from your opponent attacking you before you can lift your weapon. Even Force-adepts have quicker ways to kill you if that's what they wanted to do (look at how often Vader actually uses his lightsaber in the OT, for example, the only person he kills with it is Obi-Wan and that's because Obi-Wan let himself be killed; very clearly, Vader prefers Force Choking, which is entirely fair).

The greatest danger of a lightsaber comes from your own blaster bolts being reflected right back at you. That is a good incentive to surrender and solve things in relative peace, instead of a firefight. Even if that's not enough to stop you, even if you shoot anyways, it gives you some pause, which a blaster can't do.

When it maims, it cauterizes the wound, which prevents you from dying of bloodloss and makes it easier to find medical treatment (think of Luke in ESB).

When it kills, it kills fast and immediately, if your opponent knows where to hit. (Think of Qui-Gon in TPM, where he gets to say his last words to Obi-Wan and doesn't seem to be in much pain).

Dexter says this, in Jedi Apprentice. What the lightsaber represents to the people. Hope, safety, there's someone to protect us now… unless you are the one opposing the Jedi, of course. No other weapon inspires so much hope and fear.

It's a weapon it takes a lot of time and effort to master. It's almost a self-imposed limitation.

It's a weapon with sacred value, unlike many others. It's a unique weapon connected to its user's soul. It's a weapon which is used to protect, to defend. It's a sword used as a shield.

It's the weapon of a Jedi.

A more elegant weapon, from a more civilized age.

In my growing insanity while waiting for s2, I’ve been obsessing over these two as a proper rebel battle couple and this came out better than I could have imagined! playing around in the holonet community and had my actress girl mention auditioning for the role of "sith heartbreaker" darth maul in a tragicomedy loosely inspired by the siege of naboo. and now I'm thinking how fun it would be. I don't know enough plays (or even movies) to base this on anything but it could be so funny to have a shitty political period piece style play set in the siege of naboo. maul as a womanizer villain mastermind. the queen of naboo aged up to be romanceable. she dies in the final act. trade corporation slapstick comedy during the interludes. instead of being cut in two maul dies by being shot to death by the entire cast of good guys

The latest update changed my motion shot photo life. Couldn't keep the smile off my face. So many more ideas now to try. Needed 14 fingers though to get this shot and pause the game at the same time.

Don't know if anyone is still enjoying these but at least I am having fun taking them.

May the 4th Be With You!! I was inspired by the Phineas and Ferb Star Wars crossover special to make my own Star Wars themed designs on Branch, Poppy, and my trollsona, Rosetta a.k.a Rose. Poppy and Rose both wore the typical undertunic, overtunic, obi sash with a belt, and loose-fitting trousers, but the only difference is that Poppy wore a blue tabard and sash to match her blue bladed lightsaber, cloak and her headband while Rose wore the cream and gold colors of her ancestor’s robes in the High Republic Era, with her hair tied in a half-up space buns, reminiscent to Princess Leia’s double buns from Star Wars: A New Hope.

I kinda imagine in the crossover, Poppy and Rose are Jedi knights who live in a lush, vibrant, terrestrial planet, Hemeran in an undiscovered, neighboring galaxy with their families because they descended from the Jedi survivors who fled to their new home to hide from the Galactic Empire and there, they formed their own civilization there. Poppy and Rose only knew the stories about the events that happened because it was just newly discovered by the rebel alliance. Soon, their galaxy was embroiled in a power struggle between the Light Republic and the Sith Confederacy and it’s up to the descendants of the Jedi order and their allies to fight back against them.

When Poppy and Rose became Jedi knights, they met Branch, a young pilot from the planet Diesla who owns the ship, Olympiad Jaguar and would often stowaway escaped slaves, runaways and refugees from the neighboring Galaxy to bring to their own. Upon meeting the rest of the snack pack, with DJ Suki and her family as togruta, Smidge and her family as a group of mirialans, Cooper, Biggie as a pantoran with his beloved droid, MR-D1NKL3Z, Guy Diamond and Satin and Chenille as twi’leks, Fuzzbert as an ewok, and Legsly, the group started to work together as a team, exploring the galaxies, help those in need, and face various challenges along the way, while DJ Suki, Smidge, Cooper, Biggie, and Fuzzbert, with the help of Trollzart, a Jedi master, study the ways of the Force and learn valuable skills needed to become Jedi along the way. Creek, on the other hand, ended up joining the Dark Confederacy after being denied a position as a Jedi master ahead of time and became a sith.

With the power struggle escalating into a galactic war, the group were recruited by the Light Alliance to fight the Dark Confederacy and soon, they become the galaxy's unlikeliest last hope when the Dark Confederacy’s plans fell into their hands. With a crucial information in their hands, they must deliver it to the Galactic President and pull the checkmate on their enemies.

What I think would be fun for the Star Wars au is Jason dying as a padawan (of course), but when he's resurrected, he gets found by Mandolorians (perhaps Talia and Ra's), where he gets trained in the Mandolorian way.

Honestly I was just gonna make Jason come back as a sith but this you have peaked my interest with this idea

I really would love to write Jason in a Star Wars universe. Reblogs of this post keep popping up on my dash and needling me. There are a couple of roadblocks though …

I don’t have a specific plot/time period/place in mind. As a kid, I was a huge nerd and fell in love with the old Star Wars novels from the 1990s. Especially the Thrawn and Callista trilogies — Luke is traveling the galaxy trying to restart the Jedi order, Leia is helping rebuild Republic, the Empire plots on, lots of good stuff there. The problem is I don’t remember them well enough, so I’d have to go back and re-read them, and I really don’t have time for that. Something based off the recent Ashoka or Andor TV series might work, but nothing is jumping straight to mind. Now if someone were to drop a juicy prompt in my lap…

The one piece of it that is clear to me is that it would be a Batfam story, rather than just Jason. Which sounds like so much fun, but the time I would need to devote to working out all of those characterizations … 😬

Given the above, and all the other associated world-building that I would have to put into it, I would want to make it a series/long fic rather than a one shot, and that’s really daunting.

I have so many unfinished pieces going on right now, and more on the assembly line, I’m really loathe to start anything new until I wrap at least a few of those up.
