#lightwash
Note
I hate when people lightwash the darker toned cookies. I saw some lightwash Golden Cheese art in Twitter and it made my blood boil.
I saw some lightwash Dark Cacao art on Tumblr once and man... Why? Why did you have to do that? Man POC can never win in any Fandom, can we?

cassie sandsmark star jorts from issue #23 of yj98 you have always been famous to me
(before pic + additional photos and unnecessary ramblings under the cut)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I made these jorts in 22 hours over the course of 3 days! pure willpower via my love for cassie sandsmark because I am a total novice in sewing and i am still not very good at it. (i really just combined various tutorials and improvised on measurements and then regretted improvising measurements later on).
I thrifted these jeans last year for cassie vibes (even though I had already made her star-spangled red bellbottoms at that point) and wasn't a fan of how they fit + I couldn't figure out how to style them. I enjoyed sewing in the panels to flare them out and then everything else (cargo pockets and sewing in stars) was hell <3
the pockets are not placed well (nor are they particularly well-made), the hem is uneven, the stars are quite janky (and I think I stitched on too many), I probably stabbed my fingers a million times, and I am so in love with them

One thing that bothered from the first THG movie when I was a kid is that Thresh and Rue were described as having the same skin tone. But in the movie, Rue was significantly lighter, and Thresh had darker skin.
Now, that used to bother me for not being "Book accurate" when I was like 11 or such. But now I think of like
"Huh, having the light skinned girl being the symbolic and meta-textual representation of goodness and innocence in the Arena and the tall dark skinned boy being the one who kills someone mercilessly with a rock was a choice with Implications I'm not really a fan of..."
(I might be overthinking it cause I'm white passing and not that smart, but let me know your thoughts)
Hey don't talk about yourself like that!!! It's absolutely an example of colorism. (something that amandla has been taking advantage of throughout her career no less). like for example in the hate you give she's substantially lighter than her book counterpart
Tumblr media
you can see it in the differences in these 2 book covers. the one on the left is the original cover and as you can see she's much darker than amandla on the right.
so going back to thg here's thresh's actor
Tumblr media
let's zoom in on him
Tumblr media
now here's amandla
Tumblr media
so yeah this was a deliberate choice on the part of the casting directors. and it absolutely is an example of lightwashing/colorism.

why is it always that steve changes his personality/interests/style to be more like eddie and never the other way around?? why isnt eddie begrudgingly getting invested in sports?? why does eddie never start wearing steves polos ironically or just because he likes to feel closer to steve and then he actually starts to like them?? why is steve always the one who had to renounce who he is just because it’s (unfairly) seen as boring or bland :(

I see everyone talking about how the live action ATLA will be removing Sokka's sexism as a plot point. However I have yet to encounter anyone discussing how they removed Sokka and Katara's melanin as well.
I mean it's not entirely whitewashing but it's definitely lightwashing.

Gotta have a bigger talk about how within fandom spaces when Black creators create Black edits of fictional (mainly anime) characters, there's much bigger backlash against us versus with whitewashing or lightwashing. Also there's always an assumption that Black creators are erasing parts (specifically non white parts) of a characters identity, as if Black folks aren't a whole ass diaspora in our own right, and are very much located everywhere despite how white supremacy wants to get rid of us.
Like I have to side eye how non-Black folks will let Black characters get whitewashed or lightwashed, but Lord forbid Blackness be seen anywhere, let alone on a fictional fucking character. Like what about forced whiteness is permissible but simply adding on any level of proximity to Blackness to a character is Not Okay™. Like is there something about being Black that should be avoided at all costs, even within fictional media? Something that just "doesn't fit/look right?"
This extends to darker skin as well like don't y'all dare pull that Tim Burton shit saying that darker skin simply doesn't "Fit the aesthetic or vibe." Or whenever a piece of media is particularly dark or violent, then darker skin is allowed cause a lot of y'all perceive darker skin to be inherently more violent or are so used to seeing dark skinned folks being brutalized, that dark skin tones have become synonymous with brutality, in and outside of fictional media.
Black creators notice this shit. It reflects similar sentiments of how we're treated outside of online spaces and even outside of fandom spaces in general. So stating that the stuff that I've said above "Doesn't matter cause it's all online or doesn't have any effect on reality." is just a straight up lie. As if Black people aren't real people and as if harassment online doesn't have potentially severe consequences onto someone's mental health and overall wellbeing.

She's not native Hawaiian to let you guys know. She was born there, but she has very little Hawaiian ancestry. It's the same as White people claiming they are Native American because a distant ancestor was Native American
ok ok ok so I hate to bring up old stuff but I really can't stand this pov you have nonny. like this blog got called out (rightfully so) for mods talking about blood quantum. now those mods are gone but I'm not gonna stand here and entertain that sort of blood quantum talk.
like we can still criticize the casting of Sydney Agudong as Nani Pelekai because of colorism and light washing.
Tumblr media
Like its obvious that Nani pelekai doesn't pass the paper bag test and Sydney on the left is v light (almost white passing!)
so please please followers don't continue to bring up blood quantum on this blog it'll just get you deleted. we're not here to debate who is and isn't indigenous.

people whitewashing Asha is crazy. Disney fans yelled about supporting a black princess since we hadnt seen one since 2010 and and how good representation is but then those same fans immediately whitewash her like ok that was a lie.. 🙄 i saw some use concept art for a redesign and like theres concept art of darker skinned dark eyes asha in her cultural attire why of all the concepts did you pick the lightksinned one with looser curls and green eyes for the redesign? 🤔
That's what I'm saying, like of all the concept art, yall pick out the lightskinned ones or the ones that give her green eyes? And also pick out the ones where she isn't even wearing Amazigh clothing?
Like you got all this
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And none of yall bother to draw fanart of these forms?
