Words cannot express how much I absolutely adore this game. Today, I redrew the beautiful box art of the game. If you look real close, you will notice that Sonic's hands are really messed up on the box art. I tried my best to keep them the same while making them less messed up. I also tried a heck ton of things. Like the chromatic abberation, textures, making Sonic cel-shaded but the background soft shaded.

the thing is, steve has never really liked fireworks. his parents would host big block parties every fourth of july with black cat firecrackers and too long sparklers and armfuls of rockets to shoot into the sky. there'd be music, laughter, food and games and plenty of neighborhood kids for steve to play with, chasing each other with half burnt sparklers like they were magic wands.

and he didn't care about the fireworks, not really anyway. sure, they were pretty, but nothing special. he cared more about the brownies that mrs. fitzpatrick made and about having his first kiss tucked behind the shed in his backyard with lori mahan and drinking all the soda he wanted while his parents were entertaining. the fireworks going off in the background were more like an excuse than anything.

that was years ago. he's grown up now, seen more fireworks being used as weapons than he cares to admit, knows how destructive of a force they can really be. if he's honest, he still doesn't really care about them and hates how the booms make him shrink in on himself just a bit after everything that's happened. he hears his friends laughing and wishes he could feel that magic, too, without thinking back on past wounds that have been cauterized.

but something changes that night. it's when eddie turns around from where he's been dancing under the bright sparkles floating in the sky and steve can see them reflected in his eyes. when they get as big as saucers and he looks like a carefree kid with breathtaking starlight mixing alongside the twinkling sparks. when he smiles that smile at steve and it's just as blinding as the colors above them. when he runs over and grabs steve's hand almost shyly to pull him up into a makeshift slow dance under a curtain of fireworks. when they find themselves behind the shed and it feels like the first time all over again with a new kind of fireworks sparking behind his eyes.

steve decides he loves fireworks when it's eddie lighting them for him.

"Try not. If I were Howdy, I wouldn't have even allowed you in the door after last week!"
