You’ve felt the adrenaline rush take over your body many times in your life and they were all different in some kind of way. The one you felt when you were about to write an important test in school, the one that bubbled through your veins when you got your first kiss. The one that rolled through your limbs and chest when you first performed in front of people that weren’t your parents and the one you felt when you got the news that you were chosen to tour with none other than Harry Styles as his vocalist, singing on his stage every other night in a different city and different country.
But none of those were anything like the feeling that takes over every time you stand on that stage, your microphone that’s labelled with your name right in front of you as thousands of people are screaming in the jam-packed arena. Though it’s not you they come to see and listen to, but you are part of the magic and it’s quite enough for you.
You could never be the one standing at the front with all the lights shining down on your frame, having every gaze in the place glued to you, listening to your voice. That brings the kind of anxiety you’re quite sure you wouldn’t be able to handle. You are perfectly fine standing in the back, being the support system while staying on the down-low as someone else shines at the front, in your case, it’s Harry.
You applied for the job with a reason, already having a huge appreciation for him as an artist, adoring his work so far, especially Fine Line. Upon hearing about the opportunity to be part of his tour, you didn’t hesitate to send your application in and following three auditions, you got the phone call that they wanted you on board.
He swept you right off your feet the first time you met him, but you didn’t expect less from him. Everything you heard about him being the most wonderful person to every walk the planet were proven to be nothing but the truth. You hit it off so easily and become close through the process of rehearsals. His odd little jokes, that funny laugh of his and the way he always peeks over his shoulder to meet his eyes with yours made you fall for him faster than you’d have ever thought you could.
Just as fast as your feeling for Harry developed, tour caught up on you and before you could blink twice, you were living on the road, always dressing from your suitcase, waking up in a different city every other morning.
The foreign studio feels a little odd, but still somehow familiar as you walk in with your water and notebook under your arm. Random studio sessions with Harry became a regular not long after tour kicked off. Harry’s creative juices were overflowing and he was aching to record his creations, constantly renting random studios near the hotel you lot were staying currently and one night, when some of you all were hanging out in his suit, he asked if you’d be down helping him record vocals for a song he’s been working on.
“I want to hear it with your voice instead of mine,” he told you leaning against the wall, a glass of whatever Mitch mixed him in his hands.
“Getting bored of your own voice?” you teased him, bringing his dimples out with the smile that plastered across his lips.
“Could say that. Are you up for it?”
There was no way you would have said no. So the next morning you found yourself in a studio somewhere in Sacramento, singing the vocals to a song no one else has heard other than you and Harry.
The tour has now reached Denver, you can’t wait to be on the stage tonight, but before that, you are having another quick session with Harry in the studio.
When you walk in, his head perks up from his leather notebook he always keeps on himself, filled with his scribbled lyrics. A smile stretches across his lips when his green eyes fall on your frame.
“Hey! Hope it’s not too early for you,” he softly says standing up from the chair as you put your stuff down to the small table in the corner.
“No, managed to get a good night sleep still,” you smile at him, taking a quick look around, though this recording room is just like the others you’ve been in.
“I think I figured out that part we struggled with last time. Changed up the ending a bit, would you mind giving it another go?”
You nod looking down at his notes, seeing the changes he has made in the vocals.
“Changed anything else?” you ask as you watch him get ready for the recording.
“Yeah, rewrote a few lines, think they are fitting better now.”
“Have you recorded them yet?”
“Will do now,” he tells you shaking his head.
Soon enough you find yourself standing behind the mic, headset covering your ears as you are waiting for Harry to start recording and the music to play in your ears. Once he shows up his thumb you do the same and a moment later the song you’ve heard last time you two were working starts flowing from the headset and you stare down at the notes in front of you, waiting for the moment when you have to start singing.
It takes you a few runs to nail it down, but when you finally do, you can see the satisfied grin on Harry’s face and you think to yourself that there’s nothing you wouldn’t do to make him like this anytime.
“That was fantastic,” he beams once you join him at the screens where you see your voice appear as a pattern over a straight line. Harry does his usual magic before leaving it be. “Mind assisting recording my part?” he asks turning to you with an excited smile.
Nodding you let him tell you what to do and once he is all set behind the mic, you start the recording and the song. You listen to him in awe. There hasn’t been a moment when you didn’t feel the shiver running down your spine when he started singing. You are convinced a choir of angels is hidden in his throat, because it’s hard to believe he is just as human as everyone else.
He sings the whole song three times before he joins you again, listening back to what you have so far. The song is coming along pretty well and you can tell by the time he finishes it, it’s gonna be perfect. Everything he does is just pure perfection, whether he likes to admit it or not.
“You know how it would be absolutely perfect?” he asks you on your way back to the hotel. The two of you grabbed a coffee as well, so now you’re sipping on the hot drink, enjoying the somewhat sunny weather.
“Hm?”
“I think it would be best if a female voice sang the whole thing and the male was just the vocal.”
“Who do you think would fit best for it then?” you ask, immediately thinking of singers that could be perfect for the song. It wouldn’t be the first time Harry would sell a song to someone else, so you’re not surprised he is thinking about this kind of change.
“Y/N, I found the voice already,” he chuckles and you give him a puzzled look. “You. You are singing the song, I don’t need anyone else.”
“I’m not a solo singer,” you protest.
“There’s no such thing as solo or not solo. You’re a singer and a bloody good one. I want you to sing it.”
“But it would go to waste, because I would never actually perform it.”
“How are you so sure about that?” he smirks slyly at you, immediately making you nervous.
“Harry, I don’t sing solo,” you shake your head stubbornly, but he rolls his eyes at you.
“You could just try it. Let’s just record the song next time with you in the lead and then we can talk about the rest.”
“I’m fine recording, but I will never perform it,” you tell him, but his look makes you think he has other plans.
When tour reaches Dallas, the song gets a version with you singing solo and Harry doing the vocals in it. And though you had doubts about the switch, listening back to it you can tell how much it helped. It really is better with a female voice, though you are still convinced it shouldn’t be you.
“Are you sure you don’t want to sell it to someone? I’m fine with that,” you ask him before the show in Dallas. You’re sitting on the table in his dressing room while he is painting his nails, his tongue poking out in concentration.
“I told you, I like it with your voice. Why is that so hard to believe?”
“Because I’m not a—“
“Fuck’s sake if you dare to tell me one more time that you’re not a solo singer, I’m firing you, Y/N!” he snaps, giving you a hard look, but you just laugh at his temper.
“It’s the truth.”
“Have you ever tried to go solo?”
“Not for years,” you admit and watch him screw the nail polish closed, pushing it aside, his hands lying flat on the table as he is carefully waiting for them to dry.
“So then how do you know you are no good at it?”
“Because I hated it back then, so I most likely would hate it now as well,” you state matter-of-factly, but Harry doesn’t seem amused by your answer.
“So you think you haven’t changed a bit in years? I hope you know that’s absolute bollocks.”
“Why are you so keen on making me sing solo?” you sigh, giving him a tired look. It feels like the two of you have been running the same circles since forever. It’s not his first attempt to get you sing more than just the vocals, he once wanted to do a cover and needed a partner because it was a duet and begged you for weeks to sing with him, but you didn’t give in. You just couldn’t.
“Because I think that you are a talented singer and I want you to feel the adrenaline rush performing gives you.”
“I do get that rush every time I sing behind you. That’s enough for me.”
Harry shakes his head pressing his lips tight together.
“That’s not the same as being in the lead. It’s a whole different world.”
“Yeah, one that makes me shit my pants,” you chuckle and he can’t push a smile back.
“Maybe we should just work on it. Your anxiety. I think we could actually make you feel better if we tried.”
“I still don’t know where this obsession with me being solo comes for you.”
Harry stands up, takes one last look at his nails before he steps closer smiling down at you softly and you bite into your bottom lip, realizing how close he is standing to you. His fingers tap in your cheek gently, running them down to your chin as he tilts your head up a bit.
“Just accept it, Love,” he smiles softly before stepping away and carrying on with his routine.
That evening, you stand at the back with the other two vocalists, eyes glued to Harry’s figure at the front of the stage, you watch him pour his soul out to the audience, interact with them and reach that state of mind you have never been able to get into. You know what he told you about performing is true, yet you are still terrified to do it yourself. It’s too nerve wrecking to have everyone look at and listen to you, so many chances to mess it up and make a fool out of yourself.
But when Harry’s eyes meet yours and he shoots you a warm smile, something shifts in you. The urge to have this connection with not just the audience and the song, but with him takes over your whole body and you make up your mind to at least give it a try.
Harry is ecstatic when you tell him later that night that you changed your mind. You see that sparkle in his eyes and it was already worth for you, just seeing him react like that.
“Though I have a few suggestions to change the lyrics.”
“You do?” he asks, seemingly surprised, but mostly amused that you had the balls to come out with it.
“Yeah. Just some tiny details.”
“Why haven’t you told me about these before?”
“Because it was your song. But if you want me to sing it, it has to be mine as well.” Harry stares back at you with a smile that’s filled with pride and joy, making your heart flutter in your aching chest as you think about performing solo.
“Our song,” he softly says nodding his head.
Arriving to Houston the two of you are quick to book a studio and work on the song. Harry lets you make any changes you desire on the lyrics, even says you did justice to it and that you should have spoken up earlier about your ideas. And then you record it.
It’s not that you have to sing the whole song and not just the vocals this time. You are completely fine with Harry hearing you sing, it’s the thought of performing it in front of anyone that’s not him, that’s what makes you turn into a wreck.
You record Harry’s vocals and once it’s all put together, you are blown by the outcome. You wouldn’t have thought Harry’s voice as the vocal would compliment you in the lead, but it’s just absolutely perfect and even you can’t find anything wrong with it.
“Love, this is what Heaven sounds like, I’m telling you,” he smirks at you from the chair beside you, playing the song for the tenth time, not able to get enough of the final product.
“You are so cheesy,” you shake your head, but feel the blush heating up your cheeks. His eyes linger on you a little longer before he turns back to the screen.
When the song is over he finally stops is so silence comes over the studio. Harry turns back to face you, his green eyes basically burning a hole into your head.
“So, when are we going to perform it?”
“I really don’t think it’s a good idea,” you sigh looking down at your hands fumbling with your shirt.
“And I do think it is. So I’m not stopping until you at least try it.”
Harry Styles gets what he wants. Always. And this time, no matter how hard you try to resist him, you just can’t deny this from him. Though it takes him time to talk you up, in Washington he finally gets you to give it a try in an empty stadium.
Most of the crew is out, since the building has been finished about half an hour before, so everything is perfectly set for tonight’s show when you walk out to the stage, following Harry in his heels. He asked the piano to be brought to the front along with a mic on it and another one on a stand next to it. The two of you quietly put on your earpieces, doing everything as if it was a usual occasion before a concert, only that this time the roles will be entirely switched.
“It’s fine, alright? No one is around,” he tells you when he sees how nervous you are to sing the song for the first time outside a studio.
“There are some backstage,” you mumble under your breath, not expecting him to do anything about it.
But he does. You watch him walk backstage, completely dumbfounded about what he is doing. He disappears from your sight and a few moments later you hear him shouting at the back.
“No one comes to the stage until I say so! Yea? Thanks!” he orders and then walks back as if he didn’t just boss around the whole crew.
“They will think you’re some kind of crazy celebrity,” you chuckle when he returns, a small smirk playing on his pink lips.
“Don’t care, Darling. Now sing you heart out for me.”
Harry sits on the piano bench, his fingers getting settled on the keys before he looks up to meet your anxious eyes.
“It’s alright. Just you and me, yea?”
Nodding you gulp hard and jump a little when he starts playing the melody the two of you have been working on for so long. You hear all the notes and you know you have to start singing, but you miss the opening. Harry stops and looks at you, as you move your eyes down to the ground, ashamed you messed up immediately.
“S-Sorry, I just—“
“How can I help?” he asks right away, not even caring about the fact that you messed up, focused on figuring out a way that would help you.
“I don’t know. I really don’t,” you sigh, feeling your nerves getting worse with each passing moment.
“Come sit next to me,” he then tells you motioning for you to join him on the bench.
“What?”
“Take your mic and sit next to me,” he repeats, scooting over to make you space. Hesitantly, you pull the mic out of the stand and walking over you sit next to him. “Now you are not in the center. Just listen to the music, watch my hands on the keys, okay?”
You nod, running your tongue over your dry lips as you hold the mic to your mouth before Harry starts playing again.
After the first few notes you close your eyes and when it’s time for you to start singing, Harry leans a little against you, giving you a kind of push to just do it. And it works.
It feels a little as if it’s not even you who starts singing, but it is. Your voice fills the empty arena along with the piano’s melody and keeping your eyes closed a little longer you let your mind settle. When the first verse ends you open them and watch his hands work on the keys, right as he starts singing the vocals, leaning a little forward so his voice reaches his mic.
It’s different. It’s electric and freeing, hear your voice through the massive speakers, to be in the lead and have Harry be just the support in the song. But it feels so right, better than anything you’ve ever felt.
Line after line, you hit all the notes and by the end of the song you are able to strip all your fears down and give yourself over to the music completely. As you sing the last few notes you feel Harry’s eyes on you and turning to face him, you are met with his warm, pride-filled smile and bright eyes, glued to you while his fingers press down the last notes.
The music dies down, the voice of the piano vibrates in the air a little longer until it completely disappears and the silence returns into the stadium.
“Love,” Harry quietly calls out for you and you turn completely towards him. “That was absolutely perfect.”
“You think so?” you ask, voice barely more than just a whisper, your eyes never leaving his gaze.
“I know so,” he huffs, smile widening. He brings an arm around your shoulders and pulls you into a hug, pressing a lingering kiss to your forehead as you let out a breath you’ve been holding in for way too long.
He doesn’t try to make you perform that evening, knowing well it was enough for one day, but he does make you sing it with him in each city in the upcoming weeks. Before every concert, he empties out the area around the stage and the two of you sit down at the piano, singing your song until you feel comfortable enough to stand next to the instrument instead of sitting next to him.
The tour reaches New York and Madison Square Garden is getting ready to host Harry Styles for two evenings. The place is massive and you find yourself sitting at the edge of the stage when Harry emerges from backstage.
“Looks wild, right?” he asks sitting next to you, his thigh brushing against yours as he gets seated.
“Yeah. Pretty amazing.”
“This place has the most magical vibe.” “Yeah?” Turning to him you watch him take the arena in, his eyes glistening at the sight in front of him. You know it’s not his first time performing here, but it’s nice to see the excitement in his eyes regardless.
That feeling returns to your chest, the one you felt when Harry told you he wanted you to sing the song. The urge to be part of this amazing something that’s so much bigger than you.
“H?”
“Yea?” he turns to you smiling.
“Can I… Do you think we could sing our song tonight?”
You watch the pure surprise and excitement wash over his face, his smile stretching across his face as he stares back at you in awe.
“You want to sing it?”
Shyly, you nod your head and in a heartbeat his arms lock around you, pulling you into the tightest hug. The two of you almost fall off the stage, laughing together at his dramatic reaction.
“Of course we can sing it, Love. Would be an honor!”
Harry is quick to let the band know about the addition for tonight’s set and though everyone seems surprised, they are all supportive about your solo. As the time goes and the concert gets closer, you can feel the nerves building up and soon enough, you start to doubt your choice to sing the song tonight.
Right before it’s time to go on stage Harry takes your hand and pulls you aside, taking your face in his hands gently, making you look into his eyes.
“I know you are doubting yourself, but just know that I’m very proud of you, even if you decide to not sing the last minute.”
“I could do that?” you whisper, your hands finding his sides and you let them rest on him, a way to ground yourself in the windwhirl of your thoughts.
“Of course. I wouldn’t want to make you do something you don’t really want. Though I know you will be amazing if you choose to sing.”
Nodding you let a weak smile appear on your lips and you notice as his eyes flicker down to them before he moves his gaze up to your eyes. He then pulls you into a proper hug before walking back to the rest of the band and vocalists.
Everything goes as usual and once again, you can’t take your eyes off Harry on the stage. Just watching him perform fills you up with life, enough to keep you from running away. About halfway into the set, as the crowd is still cheering after the previous song, Harry jogs over to you.
“You ready?” he asks over the noise and before you could think about it, you nod your head.
Two guys from the crew pushes the piano further to the front and they help to set everything up as you awkwardly stand at the side. Once your mic is in the stand you walk over there, heart hammering in your chest, hands shaking like crazy.
“I have a special song for you tonight,” Harry announces into the microphone as he makes his way over to the piano. “Please welcome the lovely Y/N here, who is gonna enchant you with a song we’ve been working on lately.”
The crowd screams and you allow yourself to look around with a weak smile. So many people, you think to yourself, everyone watching you.
“It’s called Homesick, and it means so much to us, so we hope you’ll like it Justas much as we do,” Harry adds before settling on the bench and his eyes find yours. “I’m proud of you,” you see him say, only able to read his lips since the crowd is screaming so loud. “Ready?” he asks and you nod, taking a shaky breath.
He sends you a warm comforting smile before glancing down at the keys and then he starts playing.
youtube
Just like the first time, you close your eyes, forcing yourself to focus on the melody and nothing else. The lump in your throat is quite uncomfortable, but you open your eyes and see that Harry is looking straight at you, nodding in encouragement, as his fingers push down the keys to the notes right before you have to start.
“Here, where the sky’s falling, I’m covered in blue, I’m running and I’m crawling, fighting for you…”
Harry smiles wide when your voice flows through the speakers, filling the whole place, making everyone go quiet in a heartbeat as the song carries on. You feel your chest slowly deflating, the nerves cooling down with each sung note.
“You give me a reason, something to believe in, I know, I know, I know. You give me a meaning, something I can breathe in, I know, I know, I know…”
The chorus comes out perfect, your voice melting together with the piano and you finally feel your muscles relax as you slowly let go of every toxic thought that’s been tainting your mind. Harry leans closer to his microphone and his voice gently joins yours in the next verse.
“There’s a crack in my window, a bird in my room, angels all over that watch over you…”
Chills run down your spine hearing his voice, your eyes never leaving his gaze that’s fixated on your standing figure. You get lost in him and the song, something that came from the both of you, a piece of you and him. Standing there, singing this piece makes you feel closer to him than ever and you desperately want this feeling to last forever, hoping the song never ends though you know it’s gonna happen.
“When I’m walking on water all my dreams have come true. Still nothing means nothing without you…”
Homesick is exactly the feeling that bubbles inside you when you think of Harry. Because there’s this man you love so much, who is a home away from home to you, yet you still feel like you can’t be home entirely. Not in the way you’d want to. But standing on the stage in the spotlight, singing together with him as thousands of people are watching the two of you, yet you still manage to forget about them, for a moment, you feel like you finally arrived home. You are there, with him.
“Tell my heart to lie, but I know deep inside it’s true. That I wish I was there with you. That I wish I was there with you, oh I wish I was there with you.”
He plays the end of the song without tearing his eyes away from you, and there’s just a heartbeat of silence before the crowd starts screaming deafeningly, but that short moment… is yours and his.
Tugging your hair behind your ears with your shaky hands, your eardrums on the verge of breaking as you let out a laugh that was kind of a sob as well, relief washing over your body. Harry is quick to jump to his feet and rushing over he envelopes you in a tight hug.
“I’m so so so proud of you, Love. You were everything!” he mumbles, arms holding you so tight you almost lose your breath, but you want him this close, or even closer. You need to feel him, because it doesn’t feel real. His hold brings you a sense of existence only he can give you.
“Thank you, Harry,” you breathe out when he pulls back to look into your eyes, the screaming hasn’t died down even a tad little.
“No, thank you, Darling. You shined like the star that you are,” he grins, playing a sloppy kiss to your cheek before his arms fall off you.
You’d die to stay in this moment a little longer, but the show must go on. The crew pushes the piano back and soon enough, the next song starts. You stay in your spot for the rest, but you keep catching Harry smiling in your way, always making you blush.
The end of a concert is always a little hectic, everyone is all over the place. Still coming off the high you just experienced, you head to the dressing room you share with the other vocalists. They are going on and on about how amazing Homesick was, and you somehow still can’t believe tonight happened. Packing your stuff you barely notice that the door flies open, but you see Harry appear from the corner of your eye.
“Ladies, would you please give me a moment with Y/N?” he asks and the girls are quick to leave the two of you alone. You stand there, kind of dumbfounded, not sure why he is acting so dramatic. Once the door closes and it’s just you and him, he stares at you, chest heaving, his hair wet from his sweat, but he still looks breathtaking.
“Harry—“
“I’m gonna kiss you now,” he cuts you off, your breath gets caught in your throat as you stare back at him, completely frozen. Opposite to what he just said, he remains standing in the same spot and you’re not sure what’s happening. “Can I? Please say yes, I can’t hold myself back for any longer,” he then adds.
“Yes,” you breathe out without even thinking about it. In a heartbeat, Harry crosses the room, chest smashing against yours as he wraps his arms around you, lips crashing onto yours in a kiss that almost makes you moan into his mouth.
It’s all a hot mess, teeth clashing, hands all over each other before his palms run down to the back of your thighs, urging you to jump. When you do, you wrap your legs around his waist and let him walk over to the table nearby, so he can place you on top, standing between your thighs as he keeps kissing you hungrily, his tongue melting together with yours in this sweet chaos. It keeps going on and on, neither of you wanting to let go of the other, but you are eventually forced to stop, coming short of air. Panting wildly, lips swollen from his kisses, you look at him to meet his gaze.
“You have no idea how hard it was to stop myself from kissing you on stage.”
“What?” you breathe out.
“Y/N, I’m fucking crazy about you and seeing you come over your stage fright, sing that song… our song, fuck, that did some unbelievable things to me. Please tell me you felt the same thing!” He is begging, not just with his words, but with his eyes as well and it crushes your soul entirely.
“I did. Harry, I always do when I’m with you.”
“Fucking Hell,” he breathes out before kissing you again. “You are… everything, Love,” he mumbles against your lips and you can’t push down the smile stretching across your face, hearing him say the same words he said right after the song.
“You’ve told me that,” you tease him, his gaze meeting yours as he flashes you his famous half-smirk, heart fluttering at the sight of him.

An analysis on Ranboo’s lore playlist
okay y’all first of all, ranboo has a killer taste, i love him, and second, i couldn’t resist. i’m an analyst by nature. am i looking too deep into some things? did ranboo maybe choose some songs purely for the vibe? perhaps. do i care? no. let me have my fun.
I’m gonna drop my own analysis/interpretation based on these songs but feel free do use this yourself if you want!! And also feel free to disagree/correct me on anything!! I’m not a professional musical analyst lol and I did take some inspiration from already existing interpretations for the more lyrical songs.
here’s the playlist btw
“Introduction to the Snow”—introduction to the album. Fitting for the playlist’s beginning, seeing the tone. It’s mostly referencing (self-imposed) isolation.
“Dream Sweet in Sea Major”—this Miracle Music’s whole album is about dreams and reality, how they clash, loneliness and the wish to be close to someone, yet still remaining isolated. Very whimsical, metaphorical, melodic, and it has this vibe as if on the edge of consciousness. I’d say it fits quite well with c!Ranboo’s general vibe. This song in particular deals with sleepwalking(ha)/being in a dreamlike state, the line between what’s real and what’s not blurred.
“The Mind Electric”—oh this one fits Ranboo extremely well. First part is in reverse, the second in normal (mirroring), and it can get quite unsettling. Like you’re not sure what’s happening with the instrumentals, many different voices. Again, very metaphorical, but to put it shortly, the protagonist is being judged for a crime they’ve committed and, in their defence, they say: “Father, your honor, may I explain, my brain has claimed its glory over me; I’ve a good heart albeit insane”. They get “condemned to the infirmary” for that, where electric shock is used on them as a form of “therapy”. As a result, the protagonist loses grip on reality and themselves and truly does go insane. They beg for mercy and sympathy, but there’s no one to help them. “Someone help me; Understand what's going on inside my mind; Doctor I can't tell if I'm not me”—need I say more, really?
“Live and Let Die”—the phrase “live and let die” means to live your life how you wish and let others live how they wish without interfering. At first, you live by the phrase “live and let live”, meaning you have your ideals and you try to change the lives of others according to them, but as life progresses, you stop caring as much/try to distance yourself from others’ business.
“Turn the Lights Off”—dreams and nightmares. Mildly foreboding yet energetic. The actual meaning is about growing up (transition from childhood to adulthood), but we can take some other interpretations that’d fit with Ranboo’s character better. This Tally Hall’s album deals with differences, black and white, and how there shouldn’t be a divide between them. In this song, there are some noteworthy lines that I’d like to mention:
- “Bend the nightmare, you control it; Artful dodger, easy does it”—lucid dreaming, you have to be careful with it so as to not lose control.
- “Shut the closet, get under the covers”—you’re afraid of something and instead of facing it and seeing whether there even is something to be afraid of, you hide.
- “Turn the lights off”—confront your fears. It can also mean that in the dark, there’s no differences between people, going back to the album’s meaning.
- “And everybody wants to get evil tonight; But all good devils masquerade under the light”—this could mean that everyone has a darker part of themselves but those who actually indulge in their dark tendencies do so in plain sight by pretending to be someone else.
“Ruler of Everything”—the main theme here is time and how it’s the “ruler of everything”; time doesn’t matter about where it goes, and it will never stop. The second verse is most interesting to me—there are two singers, man and time, but for the sake of interpretation let’s just see it as two voices. One is obsessed about being liked, fitting in, constantly asking for reaffirmation (“Do you like how I walk? Do you like how I talk?”), while the second criticizes the first (“You practice your mannerisms into the wall”). They argue—”I’ve been you, I know you, your facade is scam; You know you’re making me cry, this is the way that I am”. The second is calling out the first for not being honest to himself. Tone is lighthearted but with an edge of unease.
“Merry-Go-Round of Life”—from Howl’s Moving Castle soundtrack. The title’s self-explanatory, I’d say.
“Killer Queen”—this one’s a harder one to interpret in regards to Ranboo lol. The song is about, based on an interview with Mercury, a high class woman that likes to indulge in her various desires (mostly sexual). I would doubt that’s what Ranboo was going for, so! Perhaps about a person that has no regards for their reputation and instead does whatever they feel like it? They have a certain image but still act however they like. Yeah, not too sure about this one :’) But that’s what I’ll go with for my later analysis.
“Ain’t No Rest for the Wicked”—quite straightforward. A person that performs bad deeds has reasons for them. Not excuses, but explanations, and you can sympathize with it. We all do “bad” things for one reason or the other, and, in the end, we’re all just trying to get by. Once again, plays into the theme of there not being a clear distinction between good and bad.
“The Bidding”—another harder one to interpret. On the surface, it’s about an auction where men are trying to sell themselves to women. They all present themselves in different images, and it’s remarked that the women care less about the date and more about the prospect of it, the pretty words. The date, actually, ends up being disappointing. Could be about expectations. Some men outright admit they’re assholes so whoever chooses them should know that. People can tell you what their intentions are from the start so if you end up hurt, you have no one else to blame but yourself.
“A Mask of My Own Face”—another interesting one! Unusual instruments, strong beat. They’re singing about how they have a desire to pretend to be someone else while secretly still being themselves. “I’d rob my own apartment and I wouldn’t give a damn; I’d blame it on the person that nobody knows I am”—implying they have no regard for their own livelihood and are just out to have some fun. Plus, that no one would be aware it’s all an act. “I'd wear it on Thanksgiving and I'd laugh in the parade; At all the people hissing, knowing I'm the one they hate”—they take delight in the idea of upsetting others and them not knowing it’s actually the singer that they should be hissing. “And at the big finale I would tear my face away; And smile as they grip their own and try to do the same”—everyone wears masks, and this person implies that their mask and their true self is not different from each other while others’ are.
“Stardust Crusaders”—soundtrack from Jojo. Action-packed? idk never seen it sorry lol
“I Can’t Decide”—oh, this one’s a doozy! One of the ones that do not fit c!Ranboo at all, but that’s what makes it interesting. A classic, the singer is out to have fun, very lighthearted and yet they’re singing about murder. The protagonist here is clearly mentally unwell and they’re indecisive whether they should let their enemy/toy/(up to interpretation) live or not. Some curious lines:
- “It’s not easy having yourself a good time”—in the context of the song, that “good time” implies something wicked.
- “I’m not a gangster tonight, don’t wanna be the bad guy, I’m just a loner, baby, and now you’ve got in my way”—they don’t view themselves as “bad”, however, the next two lines are paradoxal—the singer says they’re alone and yet decide to “mess around” with whoever comes up in their life.
- “No wonder why my heart feels dead inside, it’s hard and cold and petrified”—signifying lack of empathy.
- “It’s a bitch convincing people to like you”—they don’t actually want to do that and see it as a bother.
“Stranded Lullaby”—back to Miracle Musical, back to the theme of isolation. Super lyrical, super musical. They talk about how their memories float around aimlessly in their head, a sea, and may sometimes get lost. The protagonist, a sailor, is losing touch with reality and can’t tell apart what’s a dream anymore and what’s not. They question what they’re going through and why.
“Hidden In The Sand”—a song about longing, in my eyes. The protagonist sings about how “you” love things and how he wishes to love the same things, in the end admitting that “all I’ve wanted was you”. They don’t wish to be separated, they wish to have someone in their life that they could love.
“Now I’m Here”—euphoric. They sing about how they’re alive again, thanks to one specific person. I’m not gonna go too much into this one (partly because it’s a more difficult one for me again, partly because it’s Queen and I don’t wanna uhh talk nonsense on accident lol), but what I got from it is that when one one else saw them, someone did, and they made them “live again”, and now as a result the protagonist is devoted to them.
“&”—really highlights Tally Hall’s album’s theme of black and white and that there shouldn’t be a divide. The repetition of comparing opposites is present throughout the entire song (Weak & Strong & Wet & Dry…) and it’s heavily implied we should “say goodnight” to this mindset. But people love to choose sides, put things into good or bad categories. By the line “They took a lesson from their fathers” it’s implied that people don’t develop this mindset by themselves and are rather influenced by others around them. The whole album is titled “Good & Evil” and Tally Hall examines and criticizes this idea. If we keep dividing people into good and bad, eventually, we’ll all destroy ourselves.
“I’m Gonna Win”—a song about someone who’s struggling to get by. “Sometimes it can seem like a merciless dream”—life can get really hard and the protagonist wonders “what’s really worthwhile”. In the chorus, whoever, they declare that they’re “gonna win” no matter what. They might get “bloody and bruised” but they won’t give up until they “won’t be abused” and until they’re “laughing alone”. No matter how hard life/others kick them down, they’ll keep going. By the lines “It’s hard to be charming and smart and disarming; It’s hard to pretend you’re the best; It’s hard to fulfill everyone’s expectations; It’s hard to keep up with the rest” it’s implied that they find it tiresome to keep up appearances and be liked. It’s challenging to always fit everyone’s expectations, but they’ll continue doing whatever they have to to “win”.
if ranboo ever adds more songs to his playlist, i may add them here too :)

NCT Dream Is All Grown Up and Ready to Show What They Can Do
On a warm, late summer evening of 2016 in Seoul, South Korea, seven boys hoverboarded right into the most defining experience of their youth. Mark, Renjun, Jeno, Haechan, Jaemin, Chenle, and Jisung, then aged 17 to 14 years old, were making their debut as NCT Dream — a subunit focused on the youngest forces of SM Entertainment’s mega-group NCT. Their first title track, “Chewing Gum,” was as bubbly as its name, with choreography that required nimble maneuvers on the two-wheeled vehicle.
Fast forward nearly five years, and the Dreamies — as they are commonly known — are ready to cross another major threshold in their lives. Their highly-anticipated, 1.7 million-seller first studio album, Hot Sauce, is out today (May 10).
A few days before that, the members huddled together for a conversation with Teen Vogue via Zoom. Clad in black hoodies, face masks, and a few bucket hats, the initial impression is a striking contrast to the vivid atmosphere of their bright, cartoonish teasers for this promo cycle. Rather, this is NCT Dream in the blue hour, right at that moment of transition between the haze of preparations and the awakened reality of their most prominent comeback so far.
“We haven’t even started the actual promotions yet, but just from receiving this much love and support from our fans, we feel very touched, very, very inspired and supported,” says leader and eldest member Mark. Today, he’s wearing a pair of round glasses that complement his laidback, chill nature, while his expressive hands ruffle through his ocean blue hair, settling across his chest in an embrace. “We’re just focusing on how we can return the love that we received from them through our music.”
To say NCT Dream have grown — in all competencies — is not only obvious, but a meager understatement. Through their four EPs, the hoverboards became cardboard cars, then bikes, then motorcycles. Voices deepened, limbs grew longer, jawlines became sharper. And with all that, a number of accolades and records followed. Hot Sauce is currently the best-selling album among all releases from SM Entertainment. And out of all four current NCT units, the Dreamies were the first to receive a music show win, for 2017’s single “My First and Last,” and the first no. 1 on Korea’s largest music chart, Melon, with 2020’s “Ridin.” They received numerous prizes in Korean award shows, collaborated with English singer HRVY, released a single with American boy band Prettymuch, and also became global ambassadors of the World Scout Foundation in 2019 (an experience that culminated in viral mosh pits during the 24th World Scout Jamboree in West Virginia).
“When we debuted as teens, a lot of our music was very bright and cheerful, and that went with our age,” says the lavender-haired Jisung, who is the youngest of the group at 19. Although they are still the same endearing rascals off stage — the most chaotic footvolley game ever comes to mind — they have now “transitioned through all these phases, and with each of them we were able to show a higher level of maturity,” he adds.
In that way, Hot Sauce is their most seasoned effort yet. “We wanted to show NCT Dream’s charms through this ‘hot sauce’ vibe,” says the suave Jaemin, whose attentive eyes remain locked on the screen for most of the interview. “We have a showcase coming up where we plan to show a lot of our b-side tracks for the fans, so we’re very excited for that.” According to Haechan, the resident ray-of-sunshine of the group and owner of one of the most unique vocal colors of K-pop, they prepared a long time for this moment, and want to “show off that spicy side.”
Show off might be the best word choice indeed, as NCT Dream has dabbled with fire plenty of times before in their discography. Think of the rubbery, sticky synths of 2018’s “Drippin’” and its lyrics about a soaking wet love, or the dangerous atmosphere in 2019’s “119,” where they call themselves “twisted” and say “I like it like that.” In Hot Sauce, what was once un condimento is now a full course meal.
The album stimulates the eyes through the psychedelic TV ad-meets-taquería of the “Hot Sauce” music video, the nostalgic ‘90s photography of the teasers, the zany illustrations of the album packaging. For the ears, a 10-track collection of scorching pop with Latin and Afrobeat-inspired sounds (“Hot Sauce,” “Rocket”) and trap and hip hop — “Diggity”, “Countdown (3, 2, 1)”, “ANL” — but also soothing balms like the soft rock of “Dive Into You” and the crystalline vocals of “Rainbow,” a track co-written by Mark, Jeno, Jaemin, and Jisung, where they express “words we want to tell our fans,” according to Shanghai-born star Chenle.
That is because the Dreamies have a special reverence for Dreamzens, their fans. If it wasn’t for their support, the group’s fate could look much different now. Although it might seem counterintuitive in hindsight, the original concept for NCT Dream was to be a rotational unit. Members would “graduate” once they reached 20 years old in Korea (19 internationally), and younger, fresher faces would be added to the ensemble. It can be said that NCT Dream embodied the core concept of NCT as a whole: they held the promise of youth, its shifting nature, and the willingness to dream. But to come of age on screen and experience such foundational moments of life together begets a lingering bond — a transformation that can’t be nullified so easily.
In December 2018, Mark was the first to leave — and the last.
Dreamzens knew how special the original lineup (dubbed 7DREAM until today) was, and stood by his return and the establishment of a fixed unit. In 2020, they rejoiced as SM Entertainment finally decided to scrap the graduation concept altogether and announce Mark’s return. Hot Sauce is their first comeback since this news. “When I heard that I was coming back, I realized how big of an opportunity this could be,” says Mark. “And not only that, but to be able to be part of our first full-length album, I felt like I was lucking [out]. It all comes with the timing and everything, so, from all angles, I felt like the world helped out on this, and that our fans helped out a lot too.”
The members are thankful for his return, too. “I like the members the most!” exclaims Chenle when asked about his favorite part of the comeback. At one point in the conversation, Haechan grabs Mark’s hand and dramatically declares, in English: “Mark, you are very special. NCT Dream means Mark.” He looks at the screen to make sure this moment is being registered. Flustered, Mark quickly pulls away and laughs it off as Jisung chimes in. “All the members have their own uniqueness, their own specialties, that’s the charm of NCT Dream.”
Soft-spoken Renjun, whose half-platinum, half-black locks are hidden underneath a beige cap, explains that he and his bandmates didn’t think much about the impending graduation when they debuted. “Especially because it was the [original] system for NCT groups, we just accepted that fact,” Renjun says. “But now that NCT Dream is fixed, there’s a lot of enthusiasm to come up with new concepts and ideas, and we’re very excited to show them.”
Jeno, whose sweet-eyed smile contrasts with his commanding rap and dance skills, says that they went through a lot of lessons and experiences since debut, but that the greatest one was “learning what we’re able to do and show in our stages, and through that, finding ways to connect with our fans and make sure they enjoy it.” After all, as Chenle adds, NCT Dream means “being able to dream the same dreams with our members and our fans.”
For now, they are ready to bask in the flavorful glory of this era, and all the outcomes it will bring. “One of our goals when we debuted was to bring happiness and healing to people’s lives, and we do feel like we were able to achieve that,” says Renjun.
“Our fans witnessed it all from the start. We grew together, so now it’s time to show what it is like with NCT Dream being adults,” adds Mark. “We can be a perfect example of what growth and development look like.”

Talking about a few songs I associate with my favourite aonoex characters bc i enjoy shoving my music taste in people's faces and analysing the shit out of nothing <3
Recent chapter spoiler warning lessgo, also mentions of suicide tw
THE MAIN MANS HIMSELF
Tumblr media
Still feel - Half•Alive
"I am not a slave, so pick me from the dark and pull me from the grave"
In my mind, this is his themesong without a doubt. Its reached the point where wherever i hear it it makes me really happy because I associate it with him so strongly :,D might just be because I found it while getting back into the fandom when Ren was kinda transitioning to my favourite so they came up together but either way, absolute banger. The bit at the end when everything drops and the lead singer belts his heart out, I always love to picture Ren doing the same in the illuminati uniform with Yamatanka building around him and I've never wanted to learn how to animate more in my life cause my GOD he's so cool.
My favourite song for my favourite character <3
Preach - Saint Motel
"Oh im down on my knees, mercy"
Its so happy and bouncy?? And the vibes are immaculate?? Matches well with the themes of religion as well, this one definitely shows his flirty loverboy side more, it gives the impression of some lovestruck idiot stumbling over himself every time his crush does anything and honestly, sounds like something he'd do. Good song makes me go :))))
Your Love (Deja Vu) - Glass Animals
"You eat us up, you live like you're on camera"
I feel like this one captures his spy side a little more than the others. The lower notes in the main verses give a secretive feel, like he's halfway through a mission and trying trying stay silent. But it's also flirty in a more smooth way than wholesome crushes like the rest. The lead singer has such a gorgeous voice too i'll praise glass animals until the day i die 🥺🥺 God tier song god tier vibe 1000000/10
Do It All The Time - IDKHOWBUTTHEYFOUNDME
"Now we're so young but we're probably gonna die, it's so fun we're so good at selling lies"
Now THIS is a song for a spy working for a secret deadly organisation, all about world domination and having a great time doing it. Renzou is a free spirit and loves the freedom of his job, and this song really captures that for me. He knows he's in danger, but he's living his best life and he's having a great time doing it baybeeee B)))
Sweet Talk - Saint Motel
"You could yell 'piss off won't you stay away!' And still be sweet talk to my ears"
Ren is a persistent little shit when it comes comes crushes and this song shows it, a song about a guy who's so infatuated he doesn't care if he's hated or laughed at, he just loves hearing their voice. I see this as a bit of a yukishima anthem tbh, I feel like in the early stages of their relationship it would be pretty one sided with Shima trying to win him over and Yukio shutting him down so this matches that pretty well :>
Cant go five minutes without talking about them can i-
Honourable mentions-
Talk too much - COIN - very flirty and cheesy considered it as his themesong for a while
Toxic - Britney Spears - self explanatory :)
Razzmatazz - IDKHBTFM - everything they make shows his spy side imo, good for daydreaming
Van horn - Saint Motel -honestly anything by Saint Motel or Half•Alive reminds me of him, great bands :D
YUKIO MY BELOVED
Tumblr media
Yukio was weirdly a lot harder for me to find songs for. For Renzou i have a giant playlist I add to over time, supreme comfort playlist egegegeheh, but Yukio's is a lot shorter for some reason. I guess his vibe is a little difficult to get down but a while scrolling through my main playlist and I think I have a decent few that at least match his character development and plotline.
Stressed Out - Twenty one Pilots
"Out of student loans and treehouse homes we all would take the latter"
Pretty self explanatory really, mans was forced to grow up and mature way faster than he shouldve had to, having a high stress job by the age of 13 studying for two meister all while studying to be a normal doctor as well. Not much of a surprise he has so many mental issues by the beginning of the story. I dont listen to much TOP but the few songs I know seem to fit Yukio pretty nicely :)
Oh Klahoma - Jack Stauber
"Those aren't meant to bend, no those arent meant to bend"
Another song based on depression, but with a much quieter feel, much lower energy. I feel like this one more links to his tendencies of delf destruction, and how alone he feels as he faces his battle. Like he's singing into the void hoping for something to reply, but nothing will. Man :(
The Fall - Half•Alive
"I'd jump off and into your arms but i cant trust the fall"
I feel like this one highlight his story to Rin in a really realistic way. Yukio has a good heart, he's kind and wants to love his brother and open up to him he wants to get better. But he's so deep in his pit of depression and conflicting feelings over his brother that he can't bring himself to, he sees no way out. God I wanna write an analysis on his character so bAD-
Baby Hotline - Jack Stauber
"Numb, I've been burning with haste and I'm realising now it's a terrible waste"
We just keep getting darker huh, didn't pick very pleasant tunes for this boy did I. A bouncy, happy song about a girl calling a suicide hotline, lovely. But i feel like it describes his mental state pretty well, outside he seems ok. Sure Rin picks up that somethings off, but once Yukio assures him he doesnt really persist above asking him a couple times. But below the facade he's really reaching his breaking point, and I love how this song contrasts those two tones in a scarily natural way. Absolute banger
Fireflies - Gorillaz
"And if you say goodbye too many times, the sentinels will find me and switch me off this time"
One of my absolute favourite Gorillaz songs by far. The melody is so gorgeous, melancholic in the best kind of way. For Yukio I feel like it signifies how trapped he feels as Satan's son, he's hit his lowest point and he doesnt know how to start moving back up. But the song also has a hopeful feel to it, as if even though he feels lost, he will get better. In the recent chapters we see a moment of reconciliation between Yukio and the people around him, with Suguro forgiving him and tye two brothers finally getting a chance to to things out. Before everything went to shit lmaoo. But with that i really hope that after all the fighting is done, Yukio will finally get the chance to see how bad things have gotten, and reach out to get better. And this song shows that for me :D
Honourable mentions!!
Creature - Half•Alive - the first song I ever added to his playlist, there for sentimentality tbh
Cane shuga - Glass Animals - the plonky noises make the happy chemical go buckwild, not sure why it reminds me of him it just kinda does really
I Earn My Life - Lemon Demon - mans is overworked give him a break :( ngl i don't associate it with him much but i wanted to edge a lemon demon song in somewhere-
Dead inside - Younger Hunger - whenever I hear this I always imagine a really cool animation of him and it always plays out the same way and MAN I wanna animate so baDD
Absolute wordvomit woohoo, hypervocused on this instead if doing the assignment due this evening I'm a fantastic student. This was kinda fun tho!!! I might do other characters at somepoint, these guys are my favourites but i have a bunch of playlists for other characters like Amaimon and Shura, recommendations are welcome too!!

I really want to read your original series now. Alas, I don't know German. Can you tell us about your other original novels? (Congrats on 100 followers btw, you deserve it!)
Thank you <3
I'll tell you a secret ;)
I started to write english fanfiction so I can train to someday translate my own books into english (because getting out of the german market by just hoping a publisher likes my books so much they will hire a translator won't work)
My two other planned out novels: trigger warnings: depression, ableist language
1. A book about a japanese singer (it takes place in Japan) who has an accident and looses his voice. It is medically a bit inaccurate for the drama of it, because technically even without vocal cords you can learn to speak with different techniques. He sinks into a life crisis because all he ever wanted was singing and making music. He is able to play a lot of instruments, but his voice was the most important one to him. On his first night out after he came out of the hospital, still with bandages around his throat and one day away from the big announcement that he won't be able to sing anymore, he goes to a bar. It's ill adviced, because he is still on meds and the alkohol burns down his throat but he needs it. He just sits there, until this strange barkeeper starts to give him company. Suzumu (the singer) isn't skeptical at first, but when more and more strange things happen he just decides to ignore it all. He is good in ignoring things, it's kind of a trait you need to learn in the show business. It's okay, because Akira (the 'barkeeper') is gruff but friendly and honestly the only thing that keeps him from loosing himself completely. To top it all off the Yakuza wants to buy the building he is living in and he has a very bad confrontation with the one who calls him a cripple. He sells his apartment to them in the end and moves in temporarily with Akira, but being a fallen star means a lot of media press and soon the rumors start that he moved in with one of the most infamous members of the Yakuza. And shit, now he has dragged Akira - the only person who doesn't treat him like an invalid or a tragedy - down with him and that rabbit whole and he can't have it. Akira is strangely unfazed by it all but while Suzumu is starting to build a new carreer and getting back on his feet, Akira has to deal with people who think that having a boyfriend makes him weak.
triggerwarnings: mentions of OCD
2. There is a world right besides the human one. Liam can't understand how they managed to hide that world from humans, but they managed and he is one of the people who makes sure that it stays that way. Liam is a demon summoner. He hunts demons to devour their souls and use them to temporarily borrow their abilities. He partly transforms into the demons he uses, and the longer he uses their abilities, the longer the deformations of his body last. It is made even more difficult because the demon's souls are still alive things that he keeps trapped in his own body and they will use every weakness to get free. So over generations of demon summoners there is one trait that developed that stuck with them and keeps them alive: Every demon summoner has more or less severe OCD. They have special trainers and therapy to manage that, to make it their inherent strength instead of something that stresses them out to a point that it kills them. It helps them do rituals, drawing perfect lines for magic glyphs and to never forget their meditation or other training that keeps the souls in their bodies in check. It makes their life simultaneously easier and more complicated. Besides demon summoners there are 'normal' mages, too. Mages usually are hyperactive, always moving, because their magic energy isn't fitted for their human body. It give them too much energy they have to burn through the day. While demon summoners are mostly cold and calculated, always the perfectionists, mages seem like hyperactive children that get bored really quick, can't be punctual to save their lives and who love adrenaline kicks. It's unnecessary to say that these two groups don't get along very well. Liam works for the magical government and his main job is to keep the magical rebels in check. The rebels are an unorganized magical group who think that magic should be made public. They build small groups and organizations throughout the world and Liam is one of the people who destroy these groups. Mostly by imprisoning them. One day, though, he gets a new case. It isn't a group or an organization, it is one person. Joel is an unregistered mage. Something that usually doesn't exist and no one knows where he came from. On top of that he has powers no mage usually has and he is overall different. Calmer, more collected. Liam is the one who has to make sure Joel won't switch to the rebel side and gets registered. The problem? Joel doesn't have a clue that he is a mage and that magic exists. So Liam tricks him into moving in with him and disguises himself as a normal human being, which needs lots and lots of magic energy which he has to fill up by constantly eating, meditating, and other things. He has to try to seem normal, too. Means he can't start to yell at his new roommate when he doesn't sort the groceries right or doesn't put things back where they belong. It's stressfull, dangerous, hard and fuck if Joel isn't the most interesting being Liam ever has set eyes on.

A CERTAIN ROMANCE
CHAPTER ONE: JUEVES
Author’s note: Hello! I’ve decided to give it a go, this is my first chaptered fic in this website. This story just occurred to me a while ago and I’ve tried my best to make some sense out of the concept which honestly is forever changing on my mind. I hope you don’t find many grammar mistakes, if you do please let me know. Enjoy! (:
Story masterlist ** Word count: 2.3K **
Tumblr media
It's been years since Harry last had to use the tube, but it's not as hard as he thinks, buying the ticket was fairly simple and soon enough he was sitting on the train comfortably. The northern line wasn't too busy, no delays were announced through the speakers, his journey to Ladbroke Grove station was going to last around thirty six minutes. He suddenly can't remember how long the ride would be on a car. Maybe it's time to start using the London Underground a bit more, contributing to saving the planet, lessen his carbon footprint. With all the aeroplanes he takes a year, he should use it from now onto the rest of his life, he thinks with a bit of guilt.
He changes to the Hammersmith and city line with ease, passing by lots of people, no one truly pays attention to him. The school girls that would usually come up to him and ask for a picture are too busy gossiping among themselves, the grown up adults that are more fond of his solo work are too immersed into their own thoughts about annoying bosses. Harry likes to blend into the crowd that's gathered now at the station and awaits for the train. In the eyes of the others, he's just another guy patiently waiting for the train to hop on and get to his destination. Even though he was on his way to meet with the team that will take care of his house renovation, a property valued approximately on £4.175 million.
The train arrives and he follows the multitude that pile into the wagon, he isn't lucky to find a seat this time but doesn't mind as he finds a good spot to lean against, the doors close just as he skips the ABBA song he doesn't feel like listening at the moment and settles for Hanson instead. He bops his head along the tune before slipping back the mobile in his pocket, eyes traveling along the passengers' faces, trying to guess what they're up to.
A group of lads wearing the Tottenham jersey discuss the latest game, one of them praising Kane's goal and regretting him missing the next match. Harry knows a thing or two about football, he even plays it regularly with his friends not so far away from his home, but he doesn't keep up with Manchester United, perhaps he can do that from now on he thinks before letting his gaze fall upon the pack getting down on Baker Street and the few ones hopping on. Most of them are tourists chatting about the Sherlock Holmes museum, the singer smiles, remembering the first time he visited it with his family, many years ago. Sometimes he longs for those days to be back, so he can do the typical touristy things with the people he loves the most once in a while or have a date without a good amount of lenses focused on his every move.
Not that he regrets being a well known musician, actor, model. It comes with a lot of perks. But he's just moving on from a breakup that might have been his fault. He's a workaholic for sure, even though he's supposed to be taking it easy, his mind can't help but keep throwing song ideas for the next album. That is why Jeff suggested the home renovation, knowing that the project will keep him busy for about three months, maybe more if the contractors up sell their ideas.
Harry makes his way out of the station in one piece and without being spotted, he checks the address again on his phone, confirming the place where the meeting will be held is within walking distance and makes his way before choosing a Pink Floyd song for the six minute walk. He pulls his coat tighter around him, relishing in the forever changing weather of the city, this time he will stay and enjoy it in full, maybe even delight in the autumn too, have his mum over for a couple of weeks, maybe he'll even stay longer and take her to the ice rink.
Just as Harry plots on where to go when his favourite person pays him a visit, he reaches the private front garden off a beautiful car-free garden square. He remembers to text Jack, who doesn't take long to appear in the distance and unlock the gate for his friend.
"You're impossibly early mate," the man greets with an amused chuckle.
"Sorry, had to take the tube because of what you said about car-free development, probably miscalculated the time." Harry admits sheepishly, scratching the back of his neck as Jack leads the way through the garden. "Is this where they filmed Notting Hill?" He wonders with another look around.
"Couple of scenes that didn't make the cut, our neighbour Mrs. Black will tell you all about it, if you happen to run into her around Hugh Grant's birthday." Harry laughs as they reach a private entrance with a well-maintained front garden adorning the forepart of the property, he follows Jack inside the home where a strong coffee scent greets them both.
The musician quickly scans the large open plan kitchen/reception room with large glass sliding patio doors to a delightful independent garden where a round table is surrounded by four mismatching chairs. He doesn't remember Jack's old place, but it certainly didn't look as the dream home they're standing in right now.
"Thanks for agreeing to do the meeting here mate," Harry's words are sincere his companion can tell, he tries to shove it off as if it's nothing, handing him the mug with coffee while he pours another one for himself, "I know it can be a handful, the NDAs too." Now he's almost blushing.
"We should be thanking you H, work from home for the next couple of months, my dream come true." Jack manages to make him laugh and feel at ease again, just before the steps of a third party come from the stairs and grow closer towards them. "Just in time, Harry this is Fernando Gonzalez, my housemate and architect of the team." He introduces the tall man to his friend and watches them shake each other's hand, "Fernando this is our client, Harry Styles."
"It's a pleasure to finally meet you Mr. Styles," his voice is soft and melodic, like an aerophone instrument.
"Please call me H, all my friends do," the musician knows this is business, but he wants to have fun too, like Jeff suggested. And the guy looks way too young to be calling him Mister Styles.
"I warned you Fer, he likes to keep it easy, breezy." Jack says motioning both of them to follow his lead and sit down in their dining table that is covered with house design magazines, floor plans of Harry's home and a couple of what the pop star assumes are sketch notebooks. "Alright, tell us about your vision for this project." In all honesty, Harry doesn't know how to answer that.
He fights the urge to say that he had purchased the property knowing that not much is needed to be done to the décor. The style and the flow of the house is already lovely. After a quick glance at the plan he thinks that maybe, more room is needed and, most importantly, a new kitchen-dining-living space that would be grand enough to entertain in, but cosy enough to be the central 'hub' of his home.
"The windows, for starters, have to be replaced." He begins with a tone so confident that the pair before him don't suspect he's improvising the whole thing. "New bathrooms, perhaps from Lusso Stone, demolish an existing rear extension from the top and design and build an entirely new expansive ultra-modern one, like the one at Lou's home." Jack nods understanding what he means, "I also want a kitchen diner extension, pink granite worktops, if possible." Harry finishes before grabbing one of the magazines and starts flipping pages just to look busy.
The whole project can take six months, they let him know, through the summer and autumn. He's elated at achieving double the time he hoped for in the beginning.
"We'll send the paperwork to your team and see you next week to sign it once they approve it," Jack concludes the meeting as they all finish their coffee. "Are you busy on the nineteenth?" His friend's voice is warmer now that he's not on business mode, it makes Harry smile.
"I don't think I am, why?"
"It's Freddie's birthday, you should come, catch up with the lads," Harry nods while thinking about it, a bit unsure because it has been a while since he's seen the rest of the pack, he's not sure they'll welcome him just like that. "They're always asking about you, could be like old times, lads doing laddy stuff," the green eyed musician chuckles at that, not sure if he wants to go back to those activities of their youth.
"Sure I'll go, text me the address a few days before," his friend nods in approval to his request, "I better get going, I have to pick up my sister for dinner, see you both next week." The youngest nods and shakes Harry's hand before Jack leads the way out the house and square. The sun is setting now and the sky is a mix of pink and purple hues just as the two men bid their goodbyes until they meet again in a week's time.
Harry scolds himself for buying a one way ticket earlier instead of sorting out an Oyster card, he'll do that next time, he thinks before stepping into the train and finding a seat in the middle section of it. Led Zeppelin is a good soundtrack for his journey back home, for some reason he is craving the powerful, noisy, speedy rebellion that came with the band's songs, he loved to get so lost in the music that whatever activity he did came in second, every single time. Which is why he almost didn't get off at the King's cross stop, he hurried out of the vehicle, laughing to himself for being so immersed into the music.
The way back to the northern line was now familiar, but not as busy, he decided not to walk too fast after confirming that he had enough time to go home and take a shower before going over to Gemma's. Waiting at the platform he decides to change his playlist, again. Just as he's about to settle for Wings, out of the corner of his eye he spies what the person next to him is listening to and he stops from hitting play on his own device.
The who.
It's been ages since he heard them, three years if he is being honest. The train arrives and the girl next to him puts her phone in her coat pocket as she prepares to board the wagon, Harry does the same, but instead of training his eyes on the descending passengers, he lets them focus on her. She's wearing a nice burgundy coat, a black newsboy cap, high-waisted jeans with a blue polka dot blouse tucked underneath them. She's much shorter than he is, probably about Helene's height, he thinks as they make their way inside.
Without meaning to, he follows her and leans on the wall, across from her. She doesn't seem to notice how his stare is burning holes into her face, he's itching to ask her where did she buy the red boots she's wearing. Harry knows the moment he speaks to her, it will all go to shit. Some of the school girls sitting nearby might recognise his voice, his dimple could pop out to play and give him away too. She might also think he's a creep and kick him in the shin, leaving a nasty bruise that would heal in about a week, unlike the invisible one in his ego.
"Are you telling me, you developed a ten feet tall crush on someone you saw on the tube?" Gemma asks later that night, her fork full of linguine was stopped mid-air, making her brother roll his eyes but nod bashfully. "I'm speechless." The fork resumes its trajectory and she chews her pasta slowly.
"It happens to everyone, only because you both know that there's almost no chance to see each other again." Harry shrugs and bites a piece of bread, still feeling weird about the situation.
"Did she make eyes at you?"
"What?" He's completely taken off guard by his sister's question, his northern accent coming out and making him drop the 't' at the end.
"Yes, did you flirt with each other making eyes," Gemma's eyelashes flutter as if she was a Disney princess meeting her love interest for the first time, Harry shakes his head in denial, "what was it then?"
"I don't know! It was weird, couldn't take my eyes off of her but... she didn't even notice, I sound like a dirty man," he does, his sister agrees but the pink spots on his cheekbones tell a different story.
"I once had a crush like that, with a cashier at Waitrose," she remembers before sipping her wine, "he was nice to look at, one day he wasn't there anymore, just like that." Gemma sighed and took her younger sibling's hand on hers before adding. "If our lives were a Nicholas Sparks novel, perhaps we would be getting ready to have a date with those lovely people but..." Harry laughed and gave her hand a gentle squeeze.
"How's the sunnies collaboration going?" He asked before taking the last of his gnocchi. Listening to his sister talk about things that she enjoyed was the highlight of his days, he managed to push his silly underground crush to the back of his mind.
But there was the truth of what Harry couldn't see, or say. He'd probably like to have a shot with a girl like that and if Gemma could only see her, she would agree. Agree that there might be a story around there.

A MAN WHO WAS BORN TO BE THE PERFECT IDOL
Let talk it through first that on this occasion the interview with JB, who is one of the members of the band GOT7, has been done on Q&A session via e-mail. Due to the COVID-19, we have not had a chance to extensively talk to him in person. Although the interview with JB was quite straightforward because of his personality which is quiet and reserved, we could still perceive the real sense of his sincere and honest goodwill towards his fans. This obviously came out through his responses within the e-mail. We at least hope that this interview will help every fan club member who is currently thinking of JB uplift their feelings and spirits. Let's give you an update on JB and his life.
During the COVID-19, what have you been doing?
JB: I did not go out anywhere at all. I spent most of my time watching TV, and also wrote new songs for the safekeeping.
How have you been looking after yourself during these times?
JB: I have been doing exercises and taking some vitamin supplements, I also have been browsing for healthy option menus. If I feel that menu is okay, I would just give it a try. Actually there is quite plenty of delicious healthy food available in the market.
What sort of activities did you do to help yourself when you feel lonely and bored?
JB: When I get bored, I like to read books or play video games. Reading really makes me focus on my own self. The contents in the books help me to open up a whole new world. I also play video games because I think it is so much fun, stress-free and relaxing.
Tumblr media
Do you have any special activities that you are now able to do during the COVID-19 which you could not previously do due to your work commitments?
JB: No, I don't have any activities in particular that I couldn't do before. I think when we were in the process of promoting our new album, I did everything that I ever wanted.
With the new album "DYE," how have you seen you and your band grow and develop?
JB: I think each development is different. On the album, I reckon that we have improved our image. I also think our feelings towards the new album are not the same from the previous albums too.
On this album, if you are to choose one song that you like the most, which one would it be and why?
JB: I definitely like the song called Crazy as I wrote it myself. Personally I also like the song called Aura because the melody of the song mekes me feel so relaxed and rejuvenated. I think it is such a beautul song.
On this album, your hair is longer. How do you feel about your new look? What's the feedback from your fan club?
JB: The fact is I had no intention of growing my hair this way, it literally just happened. But it has turned out to be fine and has had a good impact on my image. So l will keep this look for a while and I will surely look after it and keep it styled.
Every time when we launch a new album, I always need to think about what hairstyle I should have to create a new image. Of course, there will be some people who like it and those who don't. But it turns out there are more people who prefer my hairstyle like this which is a relief.
Tumblr media
As your work for this album DYE progressed during the COVID-19, can you tell us what differences have you experienced from the previous albums within the normal circumstances? Did you regret that you were unable to meet your fan club like you used to do?
JB: First of all, I have got the feeling that I don't have as much getup and go energy just like when I could meet my fan club.
We, GOT7, think we create songs for our exclusive fanbase. The sound of cheering from them makes us feel so uplifted. We feel that we can do this! And it definitely makes our performances worthwhile.
At this difficult time, we are a little disappointed that we can’t perform in front of our fan club. We really want to see everyone enjoy themselves and have a great time with our own eyes.
What is the first thing you will do when the situation is better?
JB: I want to perform on stage and I also would love to travel.
Can you tell usa little bit about your childhood, what were you like growing up?
JB: I was a mischievous little boy. But I was also reserved.
How were you raised and what kind of parenting style did your parents use?
JB: My parents always believed in me. They gave me the freedom to think and to do things. For them, whatever I did that makes me happy, they were always willing to support as long as it caused no trouble to anyone else.
No matter what I did, they always said to me 'You live your like and seek out your own path, therefore you will need to be responsible for it.’
Now I am older, they still believe whatever I do there must have been a reason why I choose to do it. It has always been this way
When you were young, what was your dream?
JB: The fact is that I never liked to stand out from the crowd. So when I was young, I always dreamed of living a quiet life, kind of like a slow-paced stream.
If you were not a singer or pop star, what do you think you would be doing now?
JB: If l am not a pop star, I think I would probably help my family farming. Perhaps right now I might be going to the market to sell the fruits and vegetables that we harvested.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If you can choose just one thing that an idol must have, what would it be?
JB: I am not so sure. I myself never thought 'Because I am the idol, I need to do something in particular', I think there are no special qualities required. For me, I only want to express myself through dancing and singing.
For you, which concert was the most memorable?
JB: The one that stood out the most was probably our first performance in America. We performed in an arena which held over 10,000 people. At that time, there were a lot of Korean fans living in America and also fans from other countries. I was amazed by how much they really enjoyed our show.
When I thought 'Why do the people like us this much?' and ‘Why do they choose to come to see us?’ This made me realise and become determined to make the show more worthwhile than what we original planned.
Can you tell us what is your opinion of the other GOT7 band members?
JB: We have the same feeling that we all are caring and treating one another as friends, brothers and family members. All of us have the same goal to be better in what we do. We always encourage and support each other to move forward and develop to be better artists.
I myself have a clear aim to become a talented artist who can write songs to tell meaningful stories to help inspire the audience.
What would you like to tell your fans who are missing you so much and are awaiting your future concerts in Thailand?
JB: We want to apologise that we were unable to perform the concert in Thailand. But next time we will give Thailand the best performance yet. Please do wait for us. Love and miss you all.

In Hinduism, the Gandharvas are male nature spirits and husbands of the Apsaras, the spirits of clouds and air. Some are part animal, usually a bird or horse. They have superb musical skills; they guard the Soma and make beautiful music for the gods in their palaces. Gandharvas are frequently depicted as singers in the court of the gods.
Gandharvas in the historic sense acted as messengers between the gods and humans; today they are depicted as imitators, cheaters, liars and those who have tricked themselves 'into being god'. In Hindu law, a gandharva marriage is one contracted by mutual consent and without formal rituals.
Tumblr media
You couldn’t remember exactly how old you were, perhaps six or seven, when you first met Geyarajan. You’d heard singing in the forest as you played in the garden behind your house, and though you knew you shouldn’t go into the woods alone, you couldn’t ignore the draw of the sound. After maybe ten minutes, you stumbled upon a clearing wherein a boy was singing, though he was unlike any other child you’d ever met.
Your village was human only; beasts and monsters were not allowed to settle there. In fact, non-human merchants were discouraged from selling their wares in the area and non-human travelers weren’t welcome in the taverns or inns. In your short life, you’d only seen a person who wasn’t human maybe twice, and only in passing. You didn’t quite understand why, but you were a small child and didn’t think to question it.
Not until you met Geyarajan. When you first saw him, you were mesmerized by his music. You sat and listened as still as a statue, afraid of spooking him, except when he stopped singing, he looked right at you and smiled as if he’d been waiting for you to come. He hopped off the rock where he had been sitting, and you got a better look at him.
He wore no clothing, but from the waist down, he was all feathers. His legs were long and spindly, ending in three-toed claws like that of a purple heron. The feathers extended up his back to his large wings, heather-grey in color, which were folded at rest behind him.
His hair was long and falling around his shoulders in ringlets, the same heather-gray as his feathers. He had a four streaks of black, two on each side, running down his neck, one stripe down his arms to his wrists, the other down the inside of his shoulders and disappearing into the feathers near his hips. His skin was dark brown and his eyes were sharp in shape, amber-gold in color, and hawk-like.
Though he was much taller than you because of his long legs, in his face, he looked to be about your age, perhaps slightly older. He was slender and graceful in his movements, taking careful steps toward you as if not to scare you, though you didn’t think you could possibly be afraid of him.
“Aren’t you from the village?” He asked, his speaking voice as musical as his song suggested. “Won’t you be in trouble for coming into the woods? My parents say that humans are scared of the woods.”
“I’m not scared,” You said, puffing up. “Papa says I’m a big girl. I can go to the corner store all by myself now. I only came ‘cause I heard you singing.”
“Oh,” He said, frowning. “I must be too close, then. I should go.”
“Wait!” You reached out, grabbing his hand. “Stay and play with me, won’t you? What’s your name?”
“Geyarajan,” He replied, not attempting to break away from your grasp. “You’re the girl who lives in the house near the river, right? What’s your name?”
You told him. “How do you know me?”
“I’ve seen you sometimes,” He said, leading you to the rock where he was sitting before. There was a bushel of flowers laying there. He began to weave them into a ring. “When I fly above the town. I know you from the ribbons.” He tugged at the blue ribbon you wore in your hair, which matched your pristine dress. Your mother insisted on dressing you like a doll, always making you wear frilly dresses and putting ribbons in your hair.
“You can fly?” You whispered in awe.
“Well, sure,” He laughed, fluffing his wings a little. “These aren’t fake, you know. I have to fly pretty high, so the only thing I can see of you clearly is the ribbons.”
“Why do you fly so high?” You asked him.
“Mother says it’s too dangerous to fly too low over the town,” Geyarajan said. “She says the people don’t like us, that they’d be mean to us if they knew we lived in the forest next to them.”
“Oh. That’s a shame. If it’s dangerous, why don’t you move?”
“Our kind lived in these woods before those humans ever settled here,” He said, pointing toward the village. “Why should we have to leave?”
“That makes sense, I guess,” You admitted. “I don’t see people like you in town. It’s only humans. I don’t know why.”
“Mother and Father say it’s because humans hate us,” He said morosely, looking at his hands as he continued to weave the garland. “Do you hate us?”
“No!” You said. “You’re so pretty! Can I… Can I touch your wings? I’ve never met a person with wings before.”
He regarded you warily, but said, “Okay, but only for a minute. Mother says our wings are a sign of divinity, that they make us holy.”
“Divine? Like an angel?”
“What’s an angel?”
You tried to explain what an angel was to him, but he just looked confused.
“I don’t understand what you’re talking about. Do you want to touch my wings or not?” He asked impatiently.
“Yes, yes!” You exclaimed. You reached out tentatively and ran your fingertips gently down his proffered wing. He watched you carefully, his hands stilling in their work.
“Wow,” You breathed. “It’s so hard to believe they’re real.”
“Well, they are,” He sniffed, eyeing you. “It’s weird.”
“What is?”
“Well, I’ve never met a human, but my parents said they’re all cruel and heartless. They call your kind monsters, but you seem nice.”
“I am nice,” You replied. “I’m friends with everyone in town. I want to be your friend, too. Can I call you Rajan?”
“Why?”
“It’s a nickname!” You said. “It means we’re friends.”
“Oh,” He replied. “Yeah, I guess so. Can I give you a nickname?”
“Sure!”
“Alright, how about…” He looked around for inspiration and his eyes fell on the flowers in his lap. There were wild daisies, coneflowers, purple poppies, blanket flowers, black-eyed susans, and blush-pink primroses. “What about Primrose?”
“I love it!” You said excitedly. “Primrose and Rajan.”
Rajan giggled.
“What’s funny?”
“Well, my whole name, Geyarajan, means ‘king of songs,’” He replied, finishing the crown of flowers and placing it on his head. “But Rajan just means ‘king.’”
You giggled too. “I like that! You can be the king of the primroses! It’ll be a kingdom just for us!”
“Sounds fun!” He said. “Let’s play Kings and Flowers, then!”
“That’s not a real game!”
“Is too! I just made it up!”
The two of you played until it started to get dark, then Rajan escorted you home. He stopped about thirty feet away from the treeline, where you could hear your mother calling.
“I can’t go closer,” He said, still wearing the flower crown. He took it off and placed it on your head. “You should run home now. I’ll watch you to make sure you stay safe.”
“Alright,” You said brightly, standing on your tip-toe to give him a kiss on the cheek. “I’ll see you again soon!”
He blushed and touched his cheek, frozen. You laughed joyfully and ran back to the garden behind your house.
“There you are!” Your mother shouted as you came out from around the house. “Where have you been? Look at the state of your dress!” She fussed. “It’s ruined! Do you know how long it took me to sew that?”
“Just make me a normal dress, Mama,” You said. “A plain one I can play in.”
“Nonsense,” Your mother said, taking your hand. “I’ll not have my daughter wallowing in the muck like some street urchin. To the bath with you!”
As she dragged you along into the house, your lovely flower crown slipped from your head and floated away on the breeze.
“Oh, Mama, my crown!”
“Leave it,” She said.
“Oh, but it was--” You stopped short before saying a present. You didn’t want your mother asking from whom. You watched as it floated into the road and was trampled by a passerby. Sighing with disappointment, you followed your mother inside.
Tumblr media
Geyarajan became your best friend from that day on. You had to be careful, though; you couldn’t go too deep into the forest for fear of dangerous creatures and he couldn’t get too close to the village, or he’d be seen and possibly captured by the townspeople. As such, you could only see each other once a week or so, and on the days you agreed to meet, often you’d sneak out to play for a few hours after bed.
Having a secret friend was thrilling. It made you feel special and important. He’d told you that he hadn’t told his parents about you, either, because he didn’t want them to be mad at him for getting so close to humans. It was as if the pretend kingdom the two of you built together was real, and you were the only two in it.
It didn’t take long at all for you to develop a crush on Geyarajan, and it seemed to be mutual. He always held your hand whenever the two of you walked together and you often gave him quick pecks on the lips to see the surprise and delight on his face. It was the pure, innocent love of childhood, and though your time together was limited, you were both happy.
Of course, secrets are never meant to last.
Time passed. One evening when you were eleven, after you’d snuck out to see him, the two of you were stargazing in a clearing, making up constellations, your fingers intertwined loosely.
“See there,” He said. “That’s the raven. It’s good luck.”
“Who says?” You asked, laughing.
“I say!” Rajan said. “I’m a king, aren’t I?”
“Oh, right,” You replied. “Papa calls that the eagle. And that’s the dog star.”
“Why do they call it the dog star?”
“I don’t know,” You said. “Tell me another one.”
He squinted. “I can’t see it all that well from here. I usually look at the stars from up in the trees. It’s harder to see them all clearly on the ground like this.”
“How high up do you go?”
“The top, obviously,” He said, sitting up and pointing straight up to a nearby oak tree. “The tallest, strongest branch. That’s the best place.”
“I’d be scared to go that high,” You said, shivering a little.
“I could help you,” He said. “I’d fly you up there.”
“Aren’t I too heavy?” You asked him skeptically. “I was the last time you tried to lift me.”
“That was a year ago! I’m much stronger now.” He hopped to his taloned feet and flexed his skinny arms. “Come on, I’ll show you.”
“Are you sure?” You asked as you took his hand.
“Come on, you trust me, right?”
You straightened up and smiled at him. “Yeah, of course I do.”
He grinned back. “I won’t be able to take off from the ground,” He said. “We’ll have to climb up a little ways so I can do a drop. I’m really good at those.”
You frowned at the thought, but since he knew way more about flying than you did, you didn’t argue. Swallowing down your nervousness, you followed him up the tree.
You hadn’t known how to climb a tree when you first met him; your mother had forbade such things. Geyarajan had decided immediately that it was inappropriate for anyone to be unable to climb a tree and taught you how to do it the second time you met. You got pretty scraped up the first few times, which you had a hard time explaining away. Now, you were an expert. You were even able to keep leaves and dirt off of your nightgown.
Of course, Geyarajan was much faster than you, since he’d been climbing trees before he could even walk. We was already on the branch he planned to launch from, waiting patiently for you to catch up. He wasn’t above heckling you, though.
“Are all humans as slow as you?” He teased. “I could be halfway to the coast by the time you get up here.”
You stopped for a moment to blow a raspberry at him. In the few seconds that you were distracted, you misstepped, your foot sliding out of your evening slipper and catching you off balance.
Geyarajan leapt, reaching out to catch you, but he was too late. You fell straight down, landing on your right leg. It snapped in half upon impact. The pain shot up your body and struck your brain, and you screamed like you never had before. Geyarajan landed next to you, panicking, trying to figure out what to do. You were crying too hard to speak.
“Hold on, Primrose, hold on,” He lifted you as carefully as he could and began to run through the woods. The pain and smell of blood made you violently sick. “I’m taking you home, just hold on.”
“No!” You managed to gasp. “You can’t go there!”
“I won’t be able to stay, but I can get you there, I promise,” He said.
“No!” You said, beginning to struggle, squealing as the movement made the pain worse. “They’ll kill you! You can’t go to the village!”
Geyarajan stopped in his tracks, breathing hard and looking toward the village and back into the forest.
“I’ll get into a lot of trouble, but there’s only one other place I can take you,” He said, sweating and shaking with fear. “Hold on to me. We’ll be there soon.”
What happened next was a blur of pain, color, noise, voices, and a terrible sick feeling throughout your body, the only familiar thing through all of it was the sound of Geyarajan’s voice and his hand holding yours. At some point, you blacked out completely.
Tumblr media
You woke up to the sound of screaming. You were lying in the back garden of your own home, a large, grey feather in your hand, and your mother rushing over to you, checking you frantically.
“Oh, god, are you okay?!” She asked. “Where have you been? What happened to you?” She saw your leg and shrieked. “Who did this to you?!”
Her shouting had attracted the attention of several men, all of whom looked tired and held burned out torches. One of them dropped their spent torch and lifted you up, carrying you into the house. There was noise and shouting and confusion all around you, made worse by your mother’s constant shrill crying in the background. You let them do as they will in silence, clutching Geyarajan’s feather.
Your leg hurt, but nowhere as badly as it had before. You looked down and saw to your surprise that the leg had been wrapped set, wrapped in cloth to stem the bleeding, and was in a makeshift splint made of straight wooden rods and vines.
The physician was called and examined your leg. During this time, you learned you’d been missing for four days. The men with torches were part of the search party, tirelessly searching the woods for any trace of you. When they found blood on the grass and a fragment of your clothes, along with several large feathers, they thought some massive monster had gobbled you up.
The physician determined that your leg had been expertly set, however, meaning it was no monster that had taken you. Since you couldn’t remember most of your time missing, you kept silent, which made everyone grim-faced. They assumed the worst and decided someone had taken you and kept you in the woods somewhere, and you were so traumatized by the incident that you’d blocked the entire event out. You couldn’t exactly argue with them, but you knew Rajan would never hurt you. Not that you could tell them that.
The search began anew, only this time it wasn’t retrieval. It was revenge. You wished you could tell them that it wasn’t necessary, you wanted to stop them, but you couldn’t do anything without telling them about Rajan and his people, and you had promised never to do so. So you could only watch anxiously as the townsfolk worked themselves into a froth, looking for a predator that didn’t exist.
Bedridden and helpless to stop the villagers from their crusade, you spent many nights crying and wishing you could see Rajan. It was too dangerous now; you thought you wouldn’t see him for a long time. You were surprised when, a week later, Rajan came straight to your window late one night. He opened it and hopped down.
“Rajan!” You breathed, elated, and reached out your arms to embrace him from the bed. He stayed out of your reach. You couldn’t see his face well in this light, but his body radiated distrust.
“How could you?” He said whispered, pain seeping into his voice. “I thought you were my friend. How could you do this to me?”
You dropped your arms. “Wha… How could I what?”
“You know what!” He retorted angrily, his voice rising in anger. “You told them! You told the humans about us! You told them where to find us!”
“I didn’t!” You replied, stricken. “I would never, you know that! I never told them anything!”
“Liar!” He snapped. “Men came! They set fire to our colony! We have no home now because of you!”
You ignored the pain in your leg and swung around to sit up properly. “I didn’t tell them anything! I don’t even know where your colony is! I’ve never been there!”
“You’re lying! You were there! My parents cared for you, they fixed your leg! This is how you repay their kindness?”
“What?” You replied, confused. “I… no, I… I don’t… I don’t remember. I don’t remember anything. The last memory I have before waking up in the garden was you carrying me. We argued because I didn’t want you to come to the village. I was worried you’d get hurt--”
“Stop,” He said, raising a hand. “Enough of this. My parents were right. You can never trust a human.”
“Don’t say that! How could you have so little faith in me? We’ve been friends since we were little! I’d never do anything to put you or your family in danger, you know that! Why would I do that?”
The light from the moon caught his face, and the pain in his eyes stopped your heart.
“You tell me.”
He climbed up onto the windowsill, walked out on the roof, unfurled his wings, and took off. You fell to the ground with a loud thump. Your father came in to find you sobbing in anguish. He lifted you and put you back to bed, petting your hair and telling you it would be alright. But it wouldn’t.
You decided that once you were healed, you’d go and find Rajan and keep protesting your innocence until he believed you. You didn’t count on your parents’ plans.
Another week passed, and your mother came into your room.
“How are you feeling, love?” She asked.
You shrugged your shoulders. You’d been sullen and depressed since Rajan’s visit. Everyone assumed it was because of your disappearance and you made no attempt to correct them. The guilt of his family’s home being destroyed weighed heavily on your mind. If only you hadn’t tried to climb that tree.
“I’m sorry, darling,” She said. “I can’t believe monsters were living right next door to us in the woods. It’s become too dangerous in this place. Look at what they did to you!”
“They helped me!” You shouted. “They’re not monsters!”
Your mother rounded on you, her face pinching in suspicion. “How would you know that? What do you know about them?”
You scowled at her and remained silent.
“I knew you were lying when you said you couldn’t remember anything.” She stood up and looked down her nose at you. “That does it. We’re moving to Dunmountain.”
“What?!” You cried. “No! I don’t want to move!”
“The decision has already been made,” She told you, pulling out your luggage and starting to pack. “Your father and I can’t abide those disgusting creatures living so close.”
“But there are people like them in the city!” You argued.
“There are rules for them there,” Your mother said. “Most of them are ring fighters or laborers. They don’t practically nest  in the backyards of decent people.”
“Who said you were decent?” You screamed. “You can’t make me go!”
“Who’s going to stop me?” She shouted back. “Your father has agreed. We’re going!” She threw your bag on the floor next to your bed. “Pack your things yourself!” With that, she turned and walked out, slamming the door behind her and leaving you to weep bitterly into your blanket.
Tumblr media
You had no choice. Within the month, you were all packed and in a wagon headed to the city. You had become withdrawn and quiet, unlike the girl you had been before. Your father worried over you, but your mother told you to suck it up and get over it. New city, new life, new start.
She was more right than she knew. In the city, you were a new person. The cheerful child that was friends with everyone she met was gone. You were shy, introverted, and taciturn, only speaking when spoken to. You found it difficult to make friends and were quick to tears.
Your mother, in an effort to desensitize you to “monsters,” took you to the gladiator’s ring and made you watch them fight each other. You hated it; the sight of them viciously attacking each other for no other purpose than to entertain humans made you physically ill.
As you got older, the people of your neighborhood began to call you the monster girl because of your tendency to go to the ring and talk to the fighters. Just talk. Some of them were willing participants, but there were others who were forced to fight. People with debt, criminals, the homeless, the mentally ill; anyone society deemed abnormal. Their jailers seemed to forget that they were still people.
You’d often sit outside of their cells and talk to them, comfort them, even write down messages to give to their loved ones. Your mother despaired of you, and the humans thought you were weird, but the creatures of the fighting ring called you an angel.
One day, when you were nineteen, there was a new arrival at the jail, a young woman with wings and bird feet. When you were told, you immediately went to see her first.
“Hello?” You called softly, tapping gently on one of the bars.
“Who are you?” She asked.
You told her your name. “I come here to talk to the fighters and help them when I can. What’s your name?”
“Aashiyana,” She replied. “You can help me?”
“I can try,” You replied. “Why are you here?”
“I caught a deer in a field near my home,” She said. “It was apparently owned by a nobleman or something. What kind of person owns a deer?”
“People with too much money,” You replied, laughing. “How long is your sentence?”
“Until my fine is up. Six months, I think they said.”
“How much is the fine?”
“300 gold.”
“That’s highway robbery!” You exclaimed. “Let me see what I can work out.”
“Thanks, I appreciate that,” She said. “This city is stifling. I hate it here.”
“So do I,” You replied, standing. You were about to turn and leave, but you were compelled to ask. “By any chance, do you know a boy named Geyarajan?”
Aashiyana sat up straighter and peered at you. “I did know a boy by that name, yes.”
Your heart hammered in your throat. “Did?”
“He doesn’t go by that name anymore. His name is Gaveshan now.”
“Why did he change his name?” You asked.
“How do you know him?”
“He saved my life years ago. He… was my friend.”
Her eyes widened and jaw dropped. “Are you Primrose?”
Your expression matched hers. “Yes! How did you know about that?”
“We met!” She said, her eyes lighting up. “Your leg was broken and my mother set it. She was the colony’s healer. You stayed in the colony with us until she felt it was safe to move you.”
“I don’t remember,” You told her. “I don’t remember anything. I was with Rajan when I broke my leg, and then I passed out. When I woke up again, I was back home and I’d been missing for four days. I don’t know what happened during that time.”
Aashiyana frowned. “You don’t remember me at all?”
You shook your head sadly. “I’m sorry. What happened to the colony?” You asked her, putting a hand on hers around the bars. “Rajan told me that it was burned, but he didn’t give me any details.”
“Men came out of the forest with torches. They set fire to everything. We had to flee with nothing. Some didn’t make it.”
“Oh, god,” You said, covering your mouth in horror. “I’m so sorry. It’s all my fault. If I hadn’t fallen out of the tree…”
“Did you tell the men how to find us?”
“No! I swear I didn’t! I don’t even remember being there!” You said. “I swear, Aashiyana, I swear on my life.”
He deep brown eyes searched yours for a moment, a discerning look on her face, and she said, “I believe you.”
Your face crumpled as the tears began to flow. “Thank you.” You wiped your face on a handkerchief and straightened yourself. “Let me see what I can do for you. I’ll get you out of here.”
“Thank you,” She said.
Tumblr media
It took some time, but you managed to make a deal with the judge. It was a lucky thing that your parents were in good standing with the stadium, as your father was a financier, so you were able to pull a few favors. You returned to Aashiyana’s cell three days later and directed the jailor to open the door.
“What’s happened?”
“I’ve made a deal,” You said. “You’re free of the fighting ring, but in exchange, you must work. I’ve made arrangements for you. I’ll tell you about it once we’re in the carriage.”
“Carriage?”
You took her by the arm. “Come on.”
Outside the jail, a carriage was indeed waiting for you. You opened the door and assisted her in getting inside, as the steps weren’t built for her large claws, and got inside after her. The carriage began to move.
“So what deal did you make?” She asked.
“You are to be my personal servant for the remainder of your sentence.”
She balked. “What makes you think I want to be a slave any more than a punching bag?”
“I have no intention of giving you any order,” You told her. “But if you wouldn’t mind, I’ll like you to take me to see Geyarajan. Or Gaveshan, I guess.”
“Do I have to stay with you?” She asked, eyeing you.
“Of course not,” You replied. “You’re free to go as soon as we get out of the city limits, as far as I’m concerned. I have no intention of ordering you around.”
“Can’t you get into trouble for this?”
“Of course. The penalty for assisting a criminal escape is taking their sentence plus five years.”
“If you know that’s going to happen when you come back, why would you do it?” She asked you, horrified.
“Simple. I’m not coming back.”

Black Daytime
Genre: college!au, slice of life, slight fluff Word Count: 3,304 Summary: It’s now the Black Day Festival and Jasmine, Katherine, Melanie, and Serena find themselves performing for the Love Stage event here as well.
Day Festival masterlist.
Warning: semi-proofread
oh hello. just a little something, something. this will have a part two. hence this one being called Black Daytime while the other will be called Black Nighttime whenever it gets shared. i know there isn’t much development in terms of story plot and the love lines, but this is more for me to enjoy writing what i’ve been working on and not being able to coherently shared it further as a chaptered story. so hopefully y’all can just bear with this and see it as its own standalone story of sorts. but yeah, happy reading and kthxbai, Admin Lia~
"Whenever was there a performance stage part of the Black Day Festival?" Serena asked once she and the other three were inside the Student Council room to change into their performing outfits.
"I honestly don't remember having one last year or the year  before that."
"They actually added it this year." Katherine answered while putting on her black glittering wings. "Said it didn't feel right that the others had one, but none for Black Day."
Serena sighed.
"And how did I let y'all get me involved with this stuff again?"
"Free food." The other three chorused with a giggle following afterwards.
Serena scoffed although she knew it was the truth, but still complained.
"Why is everything so early though."
Melanie rolled her eyes.
"Everything is too early for you."
Serena nodded already agreeing with her sister's words.
"I'm pretty sure it was on the fence for a while though."
Jasmine mentioned as she put on her long black wig and adjusted it to her liking.
"Like they've been getting a lot of feedback about wanting a performance stage since both the Red Day Festival and White Day Festival got it over the years. Before it wasn't such an issue since the Black Day Festival is a whole day event whereas the other two were just until three or something. Anwyays, the Student Council decided to finally have one this year for the Black Day Festival."
"That makes sense." Melanie said with a nod while applying black lipstick to her lips. "I remember Gina talking about it this school year, but not really sure if she wanted to do it or not since they still had to get the approval from the administration."
"Well, yeah, whatever. Still here we are like always."
Serena sighed as she situated the black eye mask with green accents to her satisfaction.
"It's not a bad thing, but aren't there like other better singers and performers that could do this?"
"There are some better people to do this." Gina answered with a gleeful tone as she entered the room.
"So why not ask them?"
Serena scowled.
"I get a deal with Jasmine and Katherine who actually like doing this and get two more that'll always tag along to help."
"Haha, guilty." The twins answered. "We do."
Melanie laughed before looking at Gina.
"So what's our name this time around and what songs are we doing?"
The Black Day Festival had two parts which were for the day, Black Daytime and the night, Black Nighttime. Daytime events differed just a little bit from Nighttime. There was a jjajangmyeon eating contest that settled in the semi-final round at night. If not eating then you could make your own jjajangmyeon. The Student Council also had a booth selling solo merchandises at discounted prices created by the students and those in the artistic club, but then it was discounted even more later that night. There was also a salon-like area where you can get your nails and make-up done, once again by students studying cosmetology.
Another area where you can design shirts and a photo-booth where you can take pictures with various props. This year the Student Council announced two new segments to the festival which were much anticipated. They were the Solo Karaoke which was right after the Black Love Stage event the quartet had been roped in to doing as well like the other events before. The only difference was that at night they held a speed-dating event, a solo dining, and a designated lounge to chill or rant compare to the morning which didn't offer the three at all.
"Hello everyone!" Demian, a student council member that was in charge of the Black Day Festival event, announced excitedly.
Those in the quad that was present for the stage section cheered loudly as the others were about the campus participating in the other events.
"This year we're introducing the Solo Karaoke for the first time as well as the awesome Black Love Stage!" Demian announced with excitement.
"Before we allow the rest of you to sing to your heart's desire, we actually have our special guest coming out to perform for you guys."
Demian motioned to the other end of the makeshift stage where Serena, Melanie, Katherine, and Jasmine appeared in their get-up to stand alongside the male.
"This time around please give a warm welcome to Fallen Angels who will perform for us to acknowledged this new segment to the Black Day Festival." Demian said as he began clapping to lead the others to do the same before talking.
"Once these wonderful ladies are done then do we began the actual karaoke. So, please anticipate Fallen Angels' performance!"
Demian walked off while wishing the four good luck as Jasmine started the ment like always.
"Hello everyone. One, two..." She started while looking at the other three.
"We're Fallen Angels!"
They finished as a group with a bow before righting themselves as they introduced themselves with new stage names starting with Melanie, then Katherine, next by Serena, and ending with Jasmine.
"I'm Lady Gluttony."
"I'm Lady Sloth."
"I'm Lady Wrath."
"And I'm Lady Vanity."
There were some cheered before Jasmine continuing to speak.
"It's an absolute honored to be up here to acknowledged this new segment of the Black Love Stage to the Black Day Festival. So we hope you enjoy our performances and please watch over us kindly."
The crowd cheered and Jasmine waited until they quieted down before introducing the first song.
"So first off, the first song we'll be singing for you is It Hurts. This is dedicated to those that are still suffering from being hurt recently or in the past."
The group stood in their place as they waited for the song to start as Kyle cued them in with Katherine's voice starting off the song. Once that song came to an end did Serena introduce the next song after they took a few moments to catch their breaths and drink some water.
"This next song is One By One." Serena introduced. "And it's dedicated to those that wished for a love one to comeback to them or return to a time when love felt right."
The quatet rotated positions whenever another person sang their new line as Serena started singing first. One By One ended and Melanie spoke next after taking a break.
"The next song, What Do You Know, is dedicated to those that had broken up with their significant other without understanding why they ended up like that."
Jasmine started the song with the talking part before Melanie actually sang the first verse. They once again kept the lyrics the way they were as the song was sung by both female and male. When the song came to an end the quartet took another moment to catch their breaths and drink some water. After doing that did Katherine speak next.
"Alright, now we're actually gonna dance and sing for y'all." Katherine announced with a laugh. "This goes out to those that were placed second and wished to continued be by their special someone's side and can't leave. This is Black Tinkerbell."
The girls got into their poses before Serena sang first then started moving afterwards. Once the song ended, the quartet took a breather, drank some water, and Serena introduced the fourth song. For some reason they were using more energy than the last two festivals.
"The next song is for those that backed off from a relationship that wasn't going anywhere despite loving the person sincerely."
Melanie spoke.
"I hope you enjoy our performance of I'll Back Off So You Can Live Better."
When the song began it was Melanie who started the song and even though the twins loved doing this, the other pair of sisters didn't mind and were enjoying it just as much. The quartet momentarily forgot their worries and other things in life as they performed for others in their disguise. Anyways, when the song came to an end the four took another break before Katherine did the next talking ment.
"Hope all of you are enjoying everything so far for Black Daytime. The next song is I (Knew It). This goes out to those that don't want to deal with love again so that there's no pain. Enjoy!"
Fallen Angels got into formation and perform a new arrangement to fit their group of four compare to the original. The song came to an end and the girls once again took a moment for drinks and a breather. Jasmine spoke to announce their final stage.
"I hope you all have enjoyed our stages so far and the event itself if you got around to it. Unfortunately this will be our last performance before Solo Karaoke officially begins."
The crowd booed at the fact as Fallen Angels chuckled. Jasmine continued speaking.
"Anyways, thank you Haru for always making us look presentable, Kyle for timing us right, Demian for hosting Black Daytime by himself, and everyone else that made the first part of Black Day Festival a success."
The quartet clapped in appreciation as the crowd cheered. Jasmine spoke again when it calmed down.
"So yeah, this last song is us going back to a slow mood and this song is dedicated to those that wished it never ended or that it could've been different. So please enjoy, Goodnight Like Yesterday!"
The quartet once again got into formation as they enjoyed their last performance although they had to change the pitch to accommodate their vocal range compare to the original. When it ended the girls lined up to bow and bid the crowd goodbye as their final moment as Fallen Angels.
"One, two..." Jasmine began as they finished as a group, "This was Fallen Angels. Thank you!"
Demian came back on stage while clapping and speaking at the same time.
"Thank you so much, Fallen Angels! Please give these lovely ladies a warm round of applause!"
The crowd did just that as Demian took center stage while motioning towards the quartet.
"Thank you once again, Fallen Angels, for your wonderful performances! Please enjoy the rest of the festival."
Demian motioned to the side to indicate for them that they were free to go. The girls bowed to him in thanks before rushing off the makeshift stage as Demian began explaining how the Solo Karaoke was going to work for the remainder of the event. The pair of sisters returned to the student council room to change out of their outfits and back to their usual wear.
"So, what are we doing for Daytime?" Katherine asked the others as they wandered around the campus of Seoul University not really sure which of the events to participate in.
"Wait, don't we have to decorate the gymnasium later at four for the Nighttime part?" Serena inquired a moment later.
"Mmhmm." The trio hummed as Serena sighed deeply.
"Let's grab some jjajangmyeon. I'm hungry." Melanie suggested. "I heard that Lulu and Cheska are running the booth so they can hook us up."
"I'm down. We can even make shirts, too." Jasmine agreed. "Yeji promised me a shirt this year."
"She promised me one, too." Katherine mentioned with a slight chuckle. "She said she'll get a baggy purple shirt ready for me this year."
"Well, at least she knows you like your shirts baggy." Jasmine mused as Katherine chuckled in agreement.
"I wondered what kinda of items they're selling this year though." Melanie said. "I hope they have more designs this year."
"Not sure, but Gina said that the designs are a lot better this year as Dia and Yumi over saw the designs compare to last year's designers who came up with them last minute." Katherine answered.
"I would hope so. Last year's design was very basic and didn't sell that well that they had to marked them down." Serena said with a frown. "I remember one of them were trying to sell it for a lot more than it should've been."
"Okay. So what are we doing first or are we splitting up instead?" Jasmine asked once they quieted down from their chatter.
"This is too salty for me." Serena admitted and handed her small portioned cup to her sister.
The pair were walking around the campus after having split up from the twins. Melanie eyed her sister while taking Serena's cup.
"Then why did you lie to the girls?"
"I didn't want to hurt their feelings."
Melanie rolled her eyes, but continued to eat the dark noodles.
"Anyways, I need something to dri-"
Serena was interrupted when she and Melanie heard their name being shouted from behind them.
"Yo! Serena! Melanie! Over here."
"Oh, it's Mark. Let's go."
Melanie urged Serena to head towards their friend.
"Watermelon slush?"
Mark offered the pair each a cool and refreshing drink of said item.
"Of course you would have the watermelon flavor." Serena commented with a laugh as Mark chuckled.
"Yeah, well, Sungchan, YangYang, Shotaro, and I made it. So it's not just me."
Each one took the offered drinks.
"Wow, that's good." Serena complimented.
"And thankfully helpful."
"Thank you!"
Mark beamed happily.
"Thank you!"
He handed each of them a small package of a cake pie.
"What's this? Serena inquired while staring at it.
"Just some extra snacks. I can take it back if you don't want it."
"No. It's mine now. Thanks."
"Welcome."
"Anyways, I didn't know you guys were allowed to have a booth. I thought it was only just Student Council members." Melanie commented after drinking.
"Me either. Hansol and Taeyong just told us that we would be setting up a booth since yesterday."
"So it's just you four running it?" Serena asked with Mark shaking his head.
"No. Besides the four of us there's also Jaehyun, Hendery, Taeil, and Haechan."
Just then Jaehyun came by with two more drinks.
"Hello, ladies." He greeted them with a charming smile as he stood next to Mark.
Serena swore she saw Melanie swoon inside, but didn't comment.
"Y'all wanna try a peach and mango slush?" Jaehyun offered a moment later. "Had some extra left over."
"Sure!" Melanie happily responded as she took one of the darkish orange drink.
"Thanks."
Serena took the other. Both sisters were impressed by the taste.
"Wow, that's actually pretty good."
Melanie shot the two males an impressive look.
"This booth will definitely be a hit."
"Oh, we've made more than what we initially thought."
"Nice." Serena commented also impressed. "What are you guys raising the money for?"
"Besides giving half to the Student Council's funding, NCT's gonna use it for our end of the school year's event."
"And what is that?" Melanie inquired.
"Secret for now."
Mark grinned before directing the conversation.
"Anyways, will you guys be participating in Nighttime, too?"
"No."
Both replied at the same time.
"But we'll be helping in decorating for it though."
Melanie informed more.
"All that's too bad."
Mark shot them a slight frown.
"We're gonna be a part of it."
"Why?" Serena questioned. "What for?"
Before Mark could answer the sisters were ushered away by the twins who both happened to at the same booth, but on the other side to head on over to the gymnasium to decorate early. Something about last minute changes that Gina had contacted the twins about since the other pair didn't answered their phones.
"Ah, well, gotta go. See ya when I see ya." Serena and Melanie bid the two goodbyes before walking off with the twins.
"Thank you girls for always helping us out." Christine, the Vice President of the Student Council, thanked the quartet.
"Especially for earlier today and now for the night event of it."
"You're welcome." The quartet chimed with smiles.
"I mean, it's nothing new." Jasmine commented with a laugh. "We're used to it."
"True. Well, everyone in Student Council knows, too, so thank you." Christine thanked them once more before giving them a playful look.
"Luckily it was just for this morning." Serena said with a relieved tone.
"Or so you think." Christine muttered with a secretive smile.
"What was that?"
"I wished I could've seen it."
Christine covered it up with something else with a sweet look.
"I'm sure Gina has a video of it like always." Katherine stated with Jasmine agreeing. "She always does and so you should be able to watch it."
"Oh, I will."
"Christine!"
Someone called out for the Vice President and the quintet turned their attention to see a male coming up to them.
"Oh, Seoljun. Hey. What's up?"
"Simon and Mint need help with the jjajangmyeon for the semi-finalists since it was labeled incorrectly when they moved it over. We don't know where Chunglim is. Selin and Daniel forgot what the final prices for the rest of the discounted merchandises were supposed to be."
"Alright. Thank you. Just make sure to hand these four their envelopes."
Christine handed Seoljun four black envelopes.
"Will do."
"Wait, what envelopes?" Serena asked suspiciously.
Christine chuckled with a indifferent shrug before walking off and waving goodbye. The quartet turned their attention onto Seoljun who cast them a reassuring smile.
"If anything is incorrect, then please let me know and I can let Liyin or Sorin fix it before the Nighttime event takes place."
He handed each one a small black envelope.
"What's this for?" Melanie asked while taking the envelope.
"Please don't tell me that Gina signed us up for something tonight, too? Please let it not be for real." Serena pleaded hopefully as she opened to see the contents.
"I'm just the messenger." Seoljun answered with a sheepish laugh. "So, does it all look right?"
The four read the content and realized they were participants in the speed dating event later tonight. Seoljun saw their expressions and held up his hands in defense.
"I'm just the messenger and I'm only in charge of the arts and crafts with Seolhwa."
"Do you know anything about the speed-dating event then?" Jasmine asked as Seoljun nodded.
"Okay, so who's in charge of it?" Katherine asked next.
"Sorin and Liyin."
"What can you tell us about it?" Melanie inquired as Seoljun relaxed.
"Well, the girls are the ones who's seated this year and the boys are the ones rotating."
"But I thought only those that didn't get any gifts from the Red and White festivals were able to participate." Serena reasoned. "Right? And those that actually wanted to sign up and join, yeah?"
"Yes, that's right, but those who are also single still can pariticpate for this." Seoljun explained. "So it fits the criteria or requirement."
"Of course it fits." Serena muttered loudly, but reluctantly accepting it. "Mine's all good."
"Mine, too." The other three informed with bigger smiles than Serena's.
"Do you need it back?" Jasmine asked as she was about to hand hers over.
"No. You guys keep it. It's supposed to be your name placard when the event starts or something like that. Sorin and Liyin will let you guys know for sure when it begins."
Seoljun informed them with a smile while looking at the other three.
"Other than that, is everything else good?"
"For now." Serena commented as the others chuckled.
"Yeah, we're good. We just need to finish setting up here first before heading on over to Liyin and Sorin for further inquires." Melanie answered.
"Okay, cool. I'll let those two know and thanks for helping us out."
"No problem."
"Oh wait." Seoljun said as he remembered something while turning to face the quartet. "One more thing."
The four looked at him unexpectedly as he handed them a piece of white paper before reminding them that he was just the messenger and quickly walked away. Serena groaned upon learning that they were also going to perform for the Nighttime's new segment, Dark Love Stage.

HEAR ME OUT: PARIS HILTON INSPIRED ME TO GO TO ART SCHOOL
Tumblr media
HEAR ME OUT: PARIS HILTON INSPIRED ME TO GO TO ART SCHOOL AND BECOME A FILMMAKER.
My sister and I played it cool until my parents dark purple grand caravan left the driveway. We knew we had to conceal our excitement of being home alone for a few hours in order to not seem suspicious. It was our chance to watch whatever trash was on television that day without the normal censorship our parents had set on us. My mother strived to win the gold medal for being a helicopter parent and my dad just agreed with whatever she said. Somehow we were always a step ahead of them. There was a vast lack of communication within my household which lead me to crave answers and sneak around to get them.
We really made a day of it. We pulled our big fluffy comforters off our beds and brought them to the couch, gathered every unhealthy snack from our cabinet (which was difficult as my mother kept a strict, low carb, low sodium, no sugar menu to chose from in our house) and hung heavy blankets over the windows to block out the glare on the 30 inch Panasonic VHS combo unit. My older sister, Cate, had control over the remote, she knew which channel number MTV played on and she memorized the Parental Control Password that was set on various channels that aired the exact rubbish it was to protect us from, but quickly became our favorite shows. At the time I didn’t even really know how Cate found out these shows existed. Our amount of media consumption was little to none. Living in a tiny town in Pennsylvania, attending private Christian school and hardly having a social life; our only connection to whats out there
would be the local blockbuster that my mother skirted us in and then quickly out of after renting wholesome family movies. I remember slipping away from my moms watch just long enough to find the “1 Night in Paris” sex tape DVD that was made in 2004 with Rick Salomon (who by the way has been married to Pamela Anderson TWICE!) and Paris Hilton as the star. A few years later, The Simple Life, featuring Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie became a huge success for Fox and was later taken over by E! network. The glimpse of the DVD cover was so scandalous I felt guilty just for looking at it. We were a few years late, really just catching the reruns of the show that E!, MTV or VH1 would play during the middle of the day, but we ate it up nonetheless.
The first episode I ever watched was on Season 5. The two girls become camp counselors and every week a different theme and set of campers come in to encounter their shenanigans. This episode was “Fat Camp” and the first order of business was for Paris and Nicole to give the campers enema’s before they start their week of dieting and exercise. It was absolutely ridiculous. I felt bad that these campers who fell victim to their bratty comments, yet my sister and I couldn’t take our eyes off it. Reality TV works in that way you know, where you feel bad, but not bad enough because its not your life.
Soon Cate and I started adding other reality shows to our pallet of rebellion. The Girls Next Door, a reality show about Hugh Hefner’s girlfriends living in the Playboy Mansion. Real World Cancun, AKA Jersey Shore before there was Jersey Shore. And of course The Hills where Lauren Conrad and Heidi Montag live it up in Orange County, a place I
thought was made up until I visited there in 2014. But the Simple Life remained my favorite of them all. But Paris Hilton was my first glimpse of glamour, so she always remained my favorite. Granted, Kim Kardashian has seemed to surpass her on many levels after starting out as her intern. And sure maybe Paris is an heiress who will never run out of money or resources and people behind her, producing her, but Miss Hilton found a savvy way to brand herself right at the pinnicale of the internet and she still had to work for it. As a filmmaker I am hyper aware of the way we consume media, which is why I’ve taken such an interest to Paris and this manipulation she had turned into an art form.
Before we go on, in case you don’t know how Paris got famous, I’m here to give you a brief backstory. Paris Hilton, heiress to the Hilton Hotels empire, was actually raised a lot like me. Her parents were strict. She wasn’t allowed to wear makeup or have much of a social life. I believe her parents knew what kind of name she bared and the harsh reality that could come with it, so they kept her on a tight leash. Despite their efforts to keep her tame she slipped away, out into the world long enough to meet famous photographer David LaChapelle, who became enamored with Paris and her sister Nicky, and insisting he take their photo. She knew it was highly against her parents rules to engage in that kind of activity but she went for it. He designed an elaborate set and costumes for them and they went ahead naively thinking the photos would be just for them to admire in private but were later were published in a 2001 Vanity Fair issue, getting her in a whole lot of trouble. She later had to turn down and offer to do Playboy because her parents would disinherit her. By the time she was 18 her career as a model
and professional partier could really take off. Paris became absolutely obsessed with fame. She came up with a formulated routine on how to grab the paparazzi’s attention. She would find all the places photographers would be hanging out that day and go to every single location just to be seen and her plan really seemed to work. She was the bright and shining star of every tabloid in America. She describes in the documentary film, “American Meme” how desperate she was, spending hours searching for a place with someone, anyone to take her picture no matter what it took. Her paparazzi access seemed responsible for Paris to become a household name. — add on?
We have to remember that this time, 2007-2009, was a turning point, as smart phones and blackberries were now in almost every American’s pocket and we were craving the tea more than ever. Tabloids started working around the clock to deliver us the latest scoop at the now possible all hours of the day; i.e. the tragedies of Amy Whinehouse, LiLo and her drug escapades, Britney Spears and her hairless melt down, the list goes on. We asked for it, we got it and kept asking for more. After Paris sought out these outlets, the offers poured in. Her own show, movie roles, modeling for brand name designers, she became a DJ, became an author, a business woman, a fashion designer she owns hotels in Dubai and is currently carrying a hefty 10.5 million instagram follower count.
I know what you’re thinking, like okay so who cares about this rich “bimbo” (dubbed courtesy of a New York Post article circa 2007) but just hear me out. Most of us can relate to her story and if not, at least to some of her tactics. What I grew to realize after becoming social media obsessed (possibly because I was deprived as a child) is that
no matter how information changes or what new technology comes to pass it along to us, we will always be doing it in the same way. I watched Myspace come and pass, seeing thousands of singers, bands and actresses get discovered through that site, even some playmates in Playboy magazine. I saw Facebook allow us to put every single thing about our lives on blast at any minute of the day. Twitter allows us to barf our thoughts up in once 180, now 280 characters, Vine stars made 6 seconds videos and now make 6 figures from their fame and last but not least Instagram, and trust me when I say I cringe having to say this, “influencers” sell to us with every photo or video they post. Whether that be a lifestyle, a product or just themselves as a person. A vast majority of us have to admit that we are drinking the juice. We ourselves are partaking in marketing our “best life” being lived via Instagram. So ask yourself, what is the difference between what we are doing on the Gram versus what Paris was doing in 2006, showcasing her persona to the media in the only way it was accessible at the time? Why not manipulate it the same way it manipulates us? Find out where the quote on quote Paparazzi are and market yourself the same way reality stars did.
Not that I have the intention to come up in the same way some of these heiresses who’s names are already famous or these vine stars or twitter comedians did but I have the power to show a portion of the world who I am and what I can do to earn my career as a filmmaker and communicator via social media.
I realized that what I was doing as a little kid, waiting for my parents to leave to seek a world outside my own is exactly what Paris did. She took the risk and got the answers.
Her obsession with fame coincided with my obsession with social media, to communicate and or get my work out there. I’m just trying to work system to brand myself. My research shows that the reality show we down load from an app store and place in our pockets has led me to some big wins. Upon getting hired for shoots or my work recognized in some way, I see there is a formula to the entire thing. When to post, how to post, who to follow, etc. I have no producers behind me to curate my Instagram, I have no connection to someone with a big name. All I have is myself to show for what I can do and if I keep going back to the place with the most access to the loudest voices , like Paris did I may have a shot at getting my own voice out there and I will say more important things than “thats hot” I promise you.
In the end I think that the reason I clung to Paris and her story so deeply was because it was virtually first and foremost example I had and to as impressionable young woman, that kind of thing sticks. The definition of success and how to obtain it was taught to me was by sneaking her show on a Saturday afternoon while my parents when to Shop Rite without me. I’ve just stayed observing all the ways fame has developed via internet and can lead to success. But the beauty of the defying gravity factor is that this blond “bimbo” and many other “bimbos” like her have done the same thing, most without the Hilton name. All I did was think twice before I believed that reality television was just a trashy phase. Instead I realized that I, like many others, am still consuming similar content in 2009 now in 2019, the difference is its in the palm of my hand and I’m deciding to take advantage of it.

48 Weeks (2/4)
(Part 1)
Throughout the 48 weeks that Geralt and Jaskier spend apart, their relationship develops.
Aka, part 3 of the Singer and the Sailor AU no one asked for but I wrote anyway. The events of this story happen after Stay or Sail Away but before Homecoming. Warnigns: some sexual content ahead!
Weeks 13-24
Week 13
He waits for Jaskier’s call impatiently, praying in his mind that this is not the time they’ve got the timezones wrong. He doesn’t even have five minutes to spare right now.
Finally, after the eternity of two more minutes, there’s an incoming call from Jaskier. He picks up and immediately says, “A storm’s going to hit us soon.”
He hears Jaskier’s shaky sigh.
“Okay,” Jaskier’s replies, his voice tight, “please stay safe.”
Geralt nods. Nothing wrong happens to the crew on his watch. He made that mistake only once.
Week 14
“Another storm’s coming.”
“What? What the hell, are we some kind of star-crossed lovers –”
“Jaskier. I have to go.”
“Right.” The glint of fear turn’s Jaskier’s eyes into a colour almost as pale as ice. “Send me a text when it’s over.”
It’s one of the worst storms Geralt’s even been through but there’s no way in hell he’ll let the sea take him or anyone he’s responsible for. They all have people to return to. The thought of his family gets him through it. Jaskier’s among them too.
Week 15
“You write those songs fast.”
“What can I say?” Jaskier answers with a disarming grin, “You’re my muse.”
Geralt snorts at the ridiculous notion but he can’t fight a small smile tugging at his lips.
He listens to the recording the moment Jaskier hangs up. The song is about longing, Jaskier’s longing. His voice is high-pitched, raw and vulnerable, and Geralt finds he can’t breathe.
Week 16
When he tries to thank for the song, the “thank you” refuses to go through his throat. “Siren,” he says instead, “I miss you too.”
Jaskier smiles, a tiny, soft thing. His blue, blue eyes sparkle and somehow, Geralt feels seen.
Week 17
“Have I told you about that time me and Rozalia tried to teach chickens how to fly?”
“You what.”
Jaskier laughs. “Yeah. When we were little, we often spent the summer holidays with our grandma back in Poland. She kept chickens and well... I remember when I was maybe eight years old, me and Rozalia noticed that Amelia, who was little then, loved to watch how the chickens try to fly up in the air.”
“So, Roza suggested that we try to teach them how to fly, and I came up with the idea of creating a... chicken launcher.”
“A chicken launcher?” Geralt repeats.
“Yes,” Jaskier answers with a chuckle, “it was a really crude thing that me and Roza built out of some random planks and bricks we found in the shed. But it worked! It launched the chickens some six feet in the air. Amelia was delighted.”
“What the fuck, Jaskier.”
“I know, okay? We didn’t hurt the chickens, I swear! Though none of them wanted to be placed on the launcher for the second time, wonder why.”
Geralt laughs and laughs, and laughs, the sound coming deep from his chest and loosening the tension in his body. He keeps cackling hysterically – because fucking chicken launcher – and comes to realise that he doesn’t mind Jaskier’s ridiculousness at all.
Week 18
Geralt quickly picks up on the fact that something’s off about Jaskier, no matter how much Jaskier tries to hide it.
“Why are you sad?” he asks.
For a moment, Jaskier says nothing, but then replies, “Valdo called me yesterday.”
Geralt frowns, surprised. “Valdo Marx?”
Jaskier didn’t fail to mention how much of a “backstabbing motherfucker and talentless swine” Valdo Marx is.
“Yeah,” Jaskier confirms with a wry smile. “I know he’d call, we’re in the same city coincidentally.” He sighs heavily. “I knew he’d be drunk. He usually calls when he’s drunk.”
Geralt stays quiet and Jaskier goes on.
“When he calls me, he just... reopens this fucking wound, saying all those things. How he loves me still, how he’s never stopped loving me, how we should meet and try again... but then he’ll start petty drama on social media to gain publicity and call my music shit because that news sells, and I–” A sharp exhale. “I wish it was simple. I wish I could only hate him but... Well. The problem is, we were something else together.” Jaskier laughs bitterly. “And yet, fame tore us apart.”
There’s a pause. Geralt doesn’t speak again, trying to process all of he’s heard. Eventually, Jaskier breaks the silence again.
“And now I’m touring, and he’s touring too, and everyone thinks we’re rivals, and it’s just getting so old. I have better things to do.”
Geralt doesn’t know what to say to that, so he only says what he knows from experience. “In the long run, it’s harder to hold on than to let go.”
“That’s –” Jaskier starts, then cuts himself off. He stares at Geralt through the screen with wide eyes. “That’s... true.”
Week 19
“Two songs?”
“I have no idea how I do that either. At this point, I’m convinced that I just can’t die. Sleep deprivation should’ve killed me long ago but here I am, alive and kicking.”
“Jaskier,” Geralt growls. His worry comes off as anger but most of his emotions do. Jaskier doesn’t seem deterred. Geralt has a suspicion that he literally has no self-preservation instinct. Still, he tries to stare Jaskier into compliance. “Go to sleep.”
Jaskier obliges after some theatrical complaining.
When Geralt plays the recordings after going to bed, he’s surprised how different the songs are. The first one is an enticing call for sharing an adventure, luring him towards thoughts of what’s beyond the empty vastness of blue, towards what’s unknown to him. It’s all Jaskier, whereas the other song is not like Jaskier at all. It has none of Jaskier’s usual energy; it’s just a call for help, a cry of deep sadness that Geralt knows very well. He hates that Jaskier knows it too.
Week 20
Geralt listens to Jaskier strumming his guitar idly and no words come to him even though he knows he should say something. He sees that Jaskier needs it but his throat refuses to work. The wolf signet is a heavy weight in his pocket and he almost curses the day he let himself have this.
He was aware from the start that he shouldn’t have. After so many years at sea, he’s almost grown an allergic reaction to getting attached like this; he knows it hurts like bloody hell. He had no idea that he’d be called for this deployment back then though, and Jaskier was there, irrationally familiar and safe. His eyes sparkled in the light of the room during that birthday party, his elegant hand was warm underneath his own, and Geralt gave in. He regretted it mere minutes later and he almost regrets it now.
This would’ve been so much easier without Jaskier. Loneliness is what he knows and waiting for Jaskier isn’t easy like that, especially not when he isn’t doing enough to have Jaskier stay.
He tries to think of Ciri’s laugh to cheer himself up but in the end, it makes his chest ache even more.
Week 21
When Jaskier’s face shows up on the screen, his eyes and grin almost scream mischief.
“Hello, dear,” he purrs, “What a sight for sore eyes you are.”
Geralt knows that tone very well. His body responds to it with a thrill of anticipation before he can form a single thought. Then, Jaskier stretches his arms, “accidentally” lowering the camera of his phone to show his naked, hairy chest, and any thoughts fly out of Geralt’s mind.
“No shirt on?” he asks, his mouth dry.
“I don’t have anything on,” Jaskier answers in that raspy voice which drives Geralt mad.
“Show me.”
“With pleasure, darling.”
Week 22
“The audience was wonderful today,” Jaskier says dreamily.
Geralt rolls his eyes. “You always say that.”
He’s been saying that very often ever since he’s started touring in North America two months ago.
“That’s because you got to say that,” Jaskier replies, “I have to make my audience feel special. I mean it this time, though. There was magic in the air.”
Suddenly, a heavy feeling settles in Geralt’s gut and he can’t help wondering if Jaskier truly means the words he says.
Week 23
In the past week, the sea has been moody, there have been several small but bothersome damages to the ship, and Ciri’s caught a nasty cold. Generally, nothing’s going like it’s supposed to, and Geralt is tired. He sees that Jaskier’s noticed.
They’re quiet, only looking at each other through the screen. The silence between them seems impassable but then it’s broken by Jaskier’s quiet question.
“Why is your hair white?”
“I won’t tell you,” Geralt snaps, because the very idea of talking about it sets his teeth on edge. Jaskier flinches at his harsh reaction. Geralt tries to amend it by adding, “Not yet.”
It’s a promise which he isn’t sure he can keep but Jaskier accepts it with a slow nod.
“Will you tell me how come you joined the Navy, then?” Jaskier asks quietly. “In detail, please. When I asked before, you only said that you didn’t have anything better to do.”
“That’s how it happened.”
“Geralt.”
“Fine.”
And so, Geralt tells him. He was twenty-three and still hadn’t dealt with having been abandoned by his mother and dumped by Yennefer, who he thought to be the love of his life at the time. He hated it so much that he decided it was his turn to abandon, and he quit everything.
Their adoptive father never suggested for them to follow in his footsteps but at the time, the Navy seemed a career good as any. Geralt and his brothers, not related to him by blood but still his brothers even before Vesemir took them in, truly didn’t have any plans too. Nothing kept them on land.
Now as he looks at Jaskier listening to him carefully, he thinks it’s funny how things have changed.
Week 24
“We’re halfway through.”
Jaskier sounds tired and Geralt heaves a sigh. The room is light but it suddenly appears very dark. He’s almost forgotten home and missing his family has got less painful but there’re still days when it chokes him, like today.
“You don’t have to do this,” he tells Jaskier.
“What do you mean?”
“It’s fine if you’ve changed your mind.”
Geralt hears Jaskier release a shaky breath.
“Have you changed your mind?”
“No,” Geralt replies, looking at Jaskier finally, hoping to be seen, “I want this.”
Jaskier smiles softly. “Good,” he says, his voice warm, “because I want this too.”
Geralt wants to call him an idiot but it would sound far too fond.
The day ends with another storm.
Part 3
***
A/N:  The story about the "chicken launcher" is what me and my younger brother did one day when we were kids. I think it's definitely something the horror sister Rozalia and the wild brother Julian would do to amuse their nasty angel baby sister Amelia.

Hi! There is a radio interview from december 31st called "Á síðustu stundu" (rás 2 kl 12:40) . Would you like to translate what they are saying? :)
The show can be found here, with the segment that Matthías is in starting at roughly fifteen minutes in. It’s quite long and most of the segment isn’t relevant to Matthías or Hatari at all, so there’ll be a lot of omissions here, but I’m translating or summarizing everything substantial that Matthías says, as usual. They actually talk about the international fanbase a little!
(Also: I’m bad at voices, I may be wrong somewhere in here on whether a host or a non-Matthías guest is speaking, please forgive me)
He is introduced as a “Matthías Tryggvi Haraldsson, I’m going to say playwright…” “Thank you.” “…singer…” “Okay.” “…activist…” “…Sure.” “And hater/Hatari.” Matthías then again says “Thanks for ‘playwright’.” I love that people do introduce him as a playwright a lot; I get the feeling that may be the work he’s proudest of, and he likes it when it’s acknowledged.
They talk about global warming a bit and denialism; Matthías contributes, “Denialists don’t want to be called denialists. It offends them.”
He’s asked if he’s doing anything special in his life for the climate; the other guy being interviewed talked about sorting his garbage. “Other than sorting garbage? Well, one should attend those protests [the youth Friday climate protests, which the woman being interviewed was part of organizing]. I haven’t done so thus far, I must admit.” They talk about how most jobs won’t let you just disappear off to a climate protest every week. Then he says “In the meantime, maybe I should buy a ‘Rótarskot’ from the persons of the year.” [The “Person of the year” was announced earlier in the show as the Icelandic Search and Rescue organization. For many years, their primary source of money was to sell fireworks for New Year’s Eve; in 2018, they started also selling ‘Rótarskot’, for those who don’t want fireworks, which is essentially funding the planting of trees and Search and Rescue at the same time.]
After talking about Search and Rescue for a bit, Matthías is asked about Eurovision, “all this… hullabaloo”. Matthías says “Yes. That’s a good choice of words.”
Host: “Have you recovered?”
Matthías: “No, I’ve just been kind of bit by bit regrounding myself. Then of course we get the New Year’s Comedy tonight and that’ll be a backslide. And then of course there’ll be another Eurovision Song Contest, and that’ll also bring it back. But then I think we’ll be rid of it, in the summer. May-June-ish.”
The host talks about how Eurovision is so huge here and people often think we’re the only people who care about it, which is a myth. He says he runs the social media for RÚV and put a photo of Matthías on Instagram when he was on Kappsmál, no gimps or leather, just Matthías (“I was wearing a green shirt,” Matthías adds), and that this photo got a lot of likes, almost exclusively from international Hatari fan pages.
Matthías: “hatarii with two i’s underscore belarus.”
Host: “Matthias I love you…”
Host: “Pics of matti…”
Matthías: “Matthías smiling is one. Hatari memes.”
Host: “Is this something that you sense in your everyday life, or is it just there?”
Matthías: “It comes up in the unlikeliest moments. Just some child pointing, or a woman at the store complimenting you out of nowhere.”
Host: “People are still thinking about this?”
Matthías: “Yeah, it’s still…”
Host: “But what about the foreigners? Are you still getting a lot of attention from abroad, messages or love confessions or…”
Matthías: “Uh, I get messages. I’ve stopped looking at my requests, long ago. Of course it’s calmed down a lot. It was real chaos back in May/June. But yeah, there’s still… you get weird tags on Instagram from all these pages. But of course, when you’re in a nation of multi-millions, the contest is a lot more niche. Even though it’s big, it’s not this unifying public thing, like it is a bit here, even though it has a large fanbase. It doesn’t dominate society in Britain or Germany like it does here.”
Host: “Here and Sweden.”
Matthías: “Yeah.”
They start talking about podcasts for a bit; Matthías says he associates audiobooks with that as well. He’s asked if audiobooks have become mainstream, and he thinks yes, at least for him this year. Somebody asks if it’s the authors reading or actors, and Matthías says he thinks it’s actors working as contractors.
A bit later they start talking about whether this is actually the start of a new decade, and Matthías opines that he feels it is. They talk about how to celebrate that; the woman host says she just bought more fireworks than usual for 2010, but today that’s not really the zeitgeist (there’s been a lot of discussion in recent years about how the ridiculous amounts of fireworks Icelanders set off on New Year’s Eve create serious pollution). The guests agree they haven’t been doing a lot of fireworks recently; Matthías says last year he just bought one rocket and one Rótarskot. Host suggests then he rocket was already carbon-neutralized. “Yes, I’m allowed.” Matthías talks about how in Sweden there’s a law where you have to prove you attended lessons before you can set off fireworks.
It’s suggested maybe there should just be one fireworks show. Matthías agrees that he likes that idea, that there’s one show and if you want to see it you just go to a certain place to watch it. Somebody says “A state show,” and Matthías says “Yeah, the state - or you could have private enterprises bidding on it.”
Eventually Matthías is asked what’s next for Hatari. “What do you do next? It’s a lot of performance art. How can you top yourselves?”
Matthías: “A good question. Well, we’ll probably take one step at a time. There’s an album in January, and a release gig, both an evening show and one the next day with no age limit. It’s all on tix.is, just to mention that. But then the future will show what we end up doing. Personally - well, you don’t want to say too much. But just continuing to surprise, introduce unexpected elements into the staging. We’ve been working with opera singers, a choir, a violin player, an accordion player… just trying to get in new elements, use the dance in a new way, just back to basics, thinking about the staging.
Host: “Will Europe crumble?”
Matthías: “Well, yes. That’s clear and that’s why we named our tour Europe Will Crumble.”
Host asks him about how they’ve got a show for all ages now, and they could hardly have imagined when they started this that they’d have children on board. He brings up Ash Wednesday and all the BDSM children running around.
Matthías: “I didn’t actually see that. But no, we weren’t expecting that. But we were to some extent conscious that we were going to slip away from the audience’s expectations. If we’re part of some scene or some particular demographic is into us, we try to surprise them and throw ourselves into some other scene. So Eurovision was in some ways a part of that. At first it was mainly metal fans who liked it. We went to Eistnaflug and it’s the first time I sing on a real stage that’s not at a bar or something. And after that we start getting more into rap, and publish a song with CYBER, and yeah, we try to demolish expectations.”
Host asks if Hatari have to restrain themselves a bit with the wider age demographic.
Matthías: “Nah, we’re just doing the same we’ve always been doing, and developing that show further. But yeah, of course the audience has changed, and we’re still trying to put our finger on exactly what group it is that’s attending our shows. It depends on the country a bit too, and place in the country. We still haven’t figured out who the typical Hatari fan is today.”
They discuss the current President of Iceland, Guðni Th. Jóhannesson, who is pretty universally beloved.
Matthías is asked for his plans for New Year’s Eve.
Matthías: “I’m getting nut roast at my dad’s, then driving home, where I rent with five cool kids, and we’re having a party. I’ve never done that, hosted a New Year’s party.”
The segment then wraps up pretty quickly after they’ve talked about what they’re doing for New Year’s.

For you: #2, 5, 6, 16, 18, 21, & 25, if you please! And then for Lauren and Ian: #1, 4, 5, 7, 9, 16, and 28, if you please! :) Thank you!
(haha no it didn’t take me a year to answer this, what are you talking about?)
2. What is something other people say about you that you’ve never been able to see in yourself?
Every recording i’ve heard of my own voice sounds annoyingly high pitched, but apparently it isn’t as grating to other people.
5. If you were to make an oddly specialized restaurant, what would it be called and what food would you sell?
I kind of hate food, to be honest, or at least the fact that we need to eat regularly. Food is “okay” at best, never excellent or of much value on its own. So any universe where i open a restaurant is one too different from this one for me to picture.
6. What type of character do you fall for every time?
My initial answer was that i hadn’t noticed one. That’s not quite true, but it’s not wrong, either. I’ve noticed a couple factors that tend to make me like characters, but it’s not universal. There’s also a tendency (though not a hard and fast rule by any means) to like characters that are generally disliked, either by the fandom or the other characters, but i’m not sure if that’s the reason i like them or just the way things turned out.
I kind of wish i had more say in which ones are my favorites, because some of them are very inconvenient favorites to have, but it’s been made very clear to me that i do not get to have any say, at all, ever.
16. If you were a figure skater, what song would you skate to in the olympics?
Feel Invincible by Skillet
18. Pancakes, french toast, or waffles and what toppings?
I don’t like any of these, to be honest, and would never pick them myself, but either French toast with lots of cinnamon, or pancakes with cinnamon apples.
21. What is a culture that fascinates you?
All of them, really. I can’t think of a specific example offhand.
25. Your thoughts on fantasy vs. realistic fiction
Both can be good. I generally prefer fantasy, but i like some realistic fiction too.
Ian and Lauren
1. What’s something you’ve given up that you don’t miss?
Ian: Apart from old clothes or toys, nothing comes to mind.
Lauren: She is looking forward to, one day, not missing cigarettes.
4. What is your dream temporary/summer job?
Ian: Hot air balloon operator? Presumably you don’t do that in colder months.
Lauren: She and her siblings used to sell lemonade in the summer, for spending money. None of them were future Fortune 500 CEO material, but for a couple years they had a system and arrangements with some other kids they knew through church to sell lemonade at strategic locations in their neighborhood, and did pretty well for themselves, all things considered. One of her brothers includes it on his resumé without any shame.
5. If you were to make an oddly specialized restaurant, what would it be called and what food would you sell?
Ian: Burger place that specializes in custom burgers -- chicken, fish, beef, vegan, all kinds of interesting and weird toppings. It would be called Burgalicious, and he would change his name to Ian Burgers.
On a related note, this Ian would have a difficult time getting Lauren to acknowledge having anything to do with him in public.
Lauren: In an alternate universe where she was good enough at cooking to pursue it, it would probably be some type of foreign cuisine, as her focus would be on being good, not necessarily connected back to her heritage. It would have a very fancy name and be extremely expensive.
She would probably take a lot of influence from Gordon Ramsay.
7. If you were a famous song writer/singer, what obscure or random things would you reference in your songs?
Ian: A lot of his music is his attempts to tell some of his favorite mythological and Biblical stories in instrumental form. It’s more obvious in some pieces than in others. The album he’s working on chiefly at the moment is based on the Psalms, but he wouldn’t necessarily say that to anyone he didn’t know well, since it’s really just an inspirational basis.
Lauren: Her music is mostly inspired by nature, but she also includes references to saints.
9. What personality trait have you worked hard to develop or control? Has it worked?
Ian: He knows he can sometimes be too lackadaisical or irreverent. He hasn’t done much to contain it, but he’s kept it from damaging his career or most of his relationships.
Lauren: Her temper. And … well, it’s better than when she was a kid.
16. If you were a figure skater, what song would you skate to in the Olympics?
Ian: This.
Lauren: An intense piece of classical music, something similar to this or this.
28. What irrational or strange thing were you afraid of as a kid?
Ian: He watched part of a TV show for older kids that featured a creepy doll coming to life. For several months afterward, Ian was always on the lookout for that doll following him around.
Lauren: When she was very little, one of her older brothers convinced her there was a chance gravity could stop working and she would drift off into outer space.
Thanks for asking!

I’ve finished my September playlist, only almost a month later. It’s got everything, The Weeknd, desert psychedelica from Niger, and Australian yodelling from 1941. What more could you want!

XO / The Host / Initiation - The Weeknd: First of all Trilogy is a masterpiece. The Weeknd is a legend forever for this alone. Back when he was an anonymous character and before he tried to pivot to being a proper pop star and started beliving his own bullshit. This trio of songs for me is one of the highlights of the whole thing because this is where things really take a turn and it serves as a nice flipside to earlier songs like Glass Table Girls (even quoting some of the lyrics from it in a very cool reprise). Where most of the songs from House Of Balloons are about his own descent into this hedonistic life, by the time you get to Echoes Of Silence he lives there comfortably, and he's turned from cool,  dark and tormented to coldly evil and calculating. He's the master of the dark palace and he's drawing this woman in. The chorus of XO is straight up cult language 'all we ever do is love, open up your mind you can find the love'. She's broke and addicted trying to escape her life and he offers her this community. Which is where Initation comes in and things get really dark. This song feels like the real truth of those stories you hear of Drake flying instagram models around and it's a masterpiece of the dark underside of the drugs money and models bragging you're used to.
Sociopath (feat. Kash Doll) - Pusha T: Get a load of this new Pusha song where he's got Rodney Dangerfield ghostwriting for him. I got a bitch that'll master your card.. my wife ova hea!! Also the funny gritted teeth way he says it cracks me up. He also says boop bop be boop bop. There's so many good moments in this very silly song from a man that is normally terrifyingly serious.
Ice Cream - Muscles: I suddenly remembered this song the other day and I'm so glad I did. A good example of how you can get so much feeling out of music that has no relation at all to the lyrics. In the right mood this song makes me so emotional and I can't even pin down why. The way he sings 'ice cream is going to save the day' somehow just makes the urban alienation of the verse even more pointed. It's such a silly little dance song and that's what's so strong about it. It's dancing at night and unsuccessfully trying to forget what happened today.
Running - Gil Scott Heron & Jamie xx: It’s extremely strange that this remix album ever happened, thinking back on it. Stranger still that a Gil Scott Heron song got remixed by Jamie xx and then remixed again by 40 and turned into a Drake song in I’ll Take Care Of U and all three versions rock. Anyway, this song and this whole album remain fantastic - it still sounds futuristic in a way where nobody else really followed Jamie’s sound, everything else went a different direction so this an In Colour feel more and more unique to me as time goes on.
Boyfriend (Repeat) - Confidence Man: I’m in love with this album. It’s the closest I’ve found so far to the level of absolute fun in dance music since Duck Sauce’s album. I love the the attitude of her lyrics, which carries through the whole album. I love when her Australian accent peeks out for a second on a few words. I love his rebuttals that almost but not quite put it over the edge into a comedy song. I love the big fading out leadup to the drop near the end where a huge throat singing drone just swallows the whole song for a second.
Ever Again (Soulwax Remix) - Robyn: Extremely hot remix alert!! Thankyou to Zan Rowe's Monthly Mixtape playlist for putting my onto this.Sometimes all you need is one ferociously hot bassline to make a life complete.
$50 Million - !!!: !!!’s new album has one of the best covers I’ve seen recently, I advise you to check it out. It’s interesting to be so far into your career (this is their 8th album since 2001) and still be writing songs about selling out, a concept which has largely disappeared from music discourse since musicians started making no money post napster. I vaguely remember the turning point being when Kimya Dawson, after blowing up via the Juno soundtrack, turned down a coke ad for a ludicrous amount and the blogosphere at the time turned on her and said she should have taken the money because she was living in a van at the time. Nobody gives a fuck about selling out anymore because bands make more from tshirts than streams so you’ve got to act like a brand just to make a living. Anyway I’ve gotten off track. This song rocks, especially for the breakdown near the end.
Tipped Hat - The Paper Scissors: A song I haven’t heard in over ten years that suddenly popped into my head the other day. I love the way this guy’s voice sounds, just completely committing to sounding like a hand puppet. I’ve been playing bass a lot more recently and so have developed the worst man habit of becoming more sensitive to and pointing out extremely hot basslines to people, so I’d be derelict in my duty to not share this one.
Heimsdalgate Like A Promethian Curse - of Montreal: I love this song about literally pleading with your brain to come good. Here’s a good quote about this album “I went through this chemical depression, and that's when I was writing a lot of the songs for Hissing Fauna. They're all songs about that experience. And I was experiencing it in the moment that I was writing the songs, and sort of asking myself: What the hell is going on? Why are you all of a sudden totally paranoid and plagued by these anxieties? And why is everything so distorted and confusing and fucked up? My lifestyle hadn't changed that much. And then I realized, well, there's something going on inside of me that I don't have control over, and then you realize how vulnerable you are to these things, these elements that you can't understand, or unless you go on medication and get it under control. It's like you're being betrayed by your body.” Something I really admire about this album is that the lyrics reflect black metal levels of mental anguish, he was absolutely going through it the worst anyone can go through it “I'd gotten to that point where nothing was working. I was borderline suicidal, and my relationship with my girlfriend had totally eroded and she'd gone back to Norway with our daughter and everything was totally fucked, and I was just like, What can I do? "The Past Is a Grotesque Animal" is about that.” But the music is one hundred percent committedly twee and I really admire the effect that that split mood gives. “The lyrics tell the story of what was really going on and the music sort of represents this other emotion that I wish existed. The music was really happy because I wanted to make something that would lift my spirits.”
Jesus Rabbit - Guerilla Toss: I love the wobbly weird bass sound in this weirdo UFO cult song. I love the bleepy bloop melody that runs through it and I love how fundamentally unstable the whole song sounds, like it’s made out of paperclips and foil and papier mache.
Suburbia - Press Club: I can’t believe I didn’t know about Press Club for so long. I only found out about them this performance https://youtu.be/bCmtc-T5Unk which I’m shocked to learn has less than 5k views considering it’s one of the very best TV performances I’ve ever seen.
Come For Me - Sunflower Bean: I’m pretty sure I’ve talked about this song before and I’m probably going to say the exact same thing but who cares! This song fuckin rocks. I love how assured it is, like “if you’re gonna fuck me then stop fucking around and fuck me already.” It also feels so musically similar to I Can Hardly Make You Mine by Cults to me, which is a great excuse for me to listen to that song every single time I listen to this song.
Thousands - Club Night: This Club Night album is really really good. It's like a really nice middleground between midwest emo and Cymbals Eat Guitars. The way this song blows up halfway through with 'what if we want it!!' is so good. This whole band feels like they're from 2009 but in a good way, the tail end of indie and twee with these prog or postrock structures where the songs just go and go, and you can just get completely lost in it.
Cemetary - Brutus: The first thing you've got to know about Brutus is the drummer is also the singer. Normally who plays what is not really important but in this case I think it's very important because it makes the drums a lead instrument more than they normally would be. When she's not singing my focus is still on the drums because they're linked and I absolutely love it. This song is great and every song I've heard of theirs is just as good, I love Brutus and they're one of the best new bands I've found recently. Someone in the youtube comments said 'there's something really special about hearing a song for the first time and just knowing you're going to listen to it hundreds of times in your life.'
Enter By The Narrow Gates / Spirit Narrative - Circle Takes The Square: I think that I think of Circle Takes The Square as a household name just because they have such an outsized importance in my own life when they're definitely not at all. They're legendary for making The screamo (good kind) album in As The Roots Undo and then taking 8 years to make a followup, which is this album Decompositions, but I don't really know if they're well known outside of like, people who have opinions about what were the hottest music blogspots in 2010. I chose both of these because you can't really have one without the other, the whole album basically runs as one long piece of music and so this just kind of jarringly ends at the end of Spirit Narrative, sorry about that please listen to the entire album. Because of the status As The Roots Undo enjoys I feel like this album was kind of ignored, or overshadowed by the reputation it was trying to live up to, almost exactly like The Avalanches with Since I Left You and Wildflower, when just like Wildflower it's a more expansive, developed take on the original sound that trades some of the rawness for a more polished and considered approach and comes out arguably better than the orginal. I feel like I have so much to say about this album but I don't really know where to begin, just listen to it.
Vitrification Of Blood (Pt. 1) - Blood Incantation: I am by no means a metal scholar, but I know that when the word 'blood' is in both the song title AND the band name that means it's good metal. I love this song, and this whole album is great. It's very 'classic' death metal but there's touches (beyond the extreme length) of psychedelica as well that puts it on another level you can just get lost in. The way the guitar goes to space at 3:40, and again properly into orbit at 6:50 is just magical. The more I listen to this band the more I understand those guys who only listen to metal, there's a whole ecosystem in here and it's really got everything you need.
Out Of Line - Gesaffelstein: This whole song is basically intended as an intro for Pursuit on the album but it’s so powerful just on its own. I love imbuing weirdo lyrics like ‘a bitter sunken love in a bleach blonde submarine’ with such ominous power through the commanding delivery. I love the way the big grunting vocals on the offbeat build to sound like a summoning ritual. I love making a big processed bell the centrepiece of your extremely evil sounding song. It’s sort of a shame that Gessaffelstein has never really gone back to the vision of his first album and has spent his time since diluting it down for guest production on Weeknd songs and the like because it feels like there’s still so much more to get out of this sound. That he hasn’t gone back and dug deeper makes Aleph stand out more and more as a singular masterpiece as time goes on.
Kamane Tarhanin - Mdou Moctar: Turning to Mdou Moctar after the new Tinariwen album kind of disappointed me, with all it’s big name guests nothing really hit me. I love this song though and I think a big part of it is the sort of loping, 6/4 rhythm that combined with the drone gives it this feeling of endlessly tumbling over itself in place, especially as the guitar heats up.
Achabiba - Fatou Seidi Ghali: I know very little about Fatou Seidi Ghali except that I saw she was supporting Sarah Louise at a show. From some googling it turns out that she’s the leader of a Nigerois band called Les Filles de Illeghadad who you can probably look forward to seeing on next month’s playlist. I also learned that the demonym for someone from Niger is Nigerien or to minimise confusion with Nigeria, Nigerois (said in a french way). They play a sort of desert psych in the realm of Mdou Mocter or Tinariwen, but this song (also the only solo song she has on spotify) shows her acoustic side. I love the swirling melody over the drone as the hand percussion keeps it in place and I love the very delicate vocals, but a probably unintentional thing I love a lot about this recording is the unmistakable iphone locking sound near the very start that instantly removes so much of the mystic exoticism that these sorts of artists are often written about with and places it firmly in the same sprawling modern world we all live in.
Floating Rhododendron - Sarah Louise: I love Sarah Louise. She’s a phenomenal guitarist and has such a big love for traditional folk music with her side project House And Land, but unlike everyone else in the genre is also very interested in pushing guitar forward to new and strange places. Her latest album was super experimental layered electric guitars and voice that still managed to maintain the deep connection to nature that runs through all her work. I would also highly recommend following her on instagram because her passion runs over. She’s regularly just out in the woods somewhere explaining how wonderful a particular mushroom is.  This song one of the first ones I ever heard from her, and it’s back when she was just doing very beautiful 12 string acoustic work, but she recently added it to spotify and it’s a very nice reminder of where she came from and how far she’s gone in such a short time.
Lark - Angel Olsen: The new Angel Olsen is absolutely great. I love how much she is just completely going for it on this album, absolutely unleashing. Taken against earlier songs of hers I’ve loved like White Fire, where the majesty was in her quiet power and the ability to absolutely command silence with a whisper quiet song, this song feels like the direct inverse, an about-turn into all the gigantic majesty of swirling strings and top of your lungs vocals - going all out and leaving nothing on the table. The way this song blows up about three different times until by the end you’re caught in this gigantic swirling maelstrom of screaming sound is just out of this world.
Door - Caroline Polachek: Caroline Polachek’s brain is huge. When I first heard the chorus of this song I couldn't believe it. Are you allowed to have a chant that runs in a spiral like this be the chorus of your pop song? Is that allowed?
North, South, East And West - The Church: The Church feel like they don't get enough respect. They don't seem to be in the same league as Cold Chisel and The Angels and all the other dad rock Australian bands from that era for some reason. They're very good though and I've been really getting into this whole album and this song specifically lately. Maybe what's working against them is just how much his voice sounds like Bono's in this song but surely that was a boon at the time!
Western Questions - Timber Timbre: This has become one of my new favourite songs to sing. The way the words fit together is my favourite kind of poetics where they just sound incredible, phonetically, and can mean anything you like for large chunks. Like “the gelatinous walls of the seeds that seldom remain / while the bulls are  browsing needles through computer casinos / honour the name”. Especially “bulls are browsing needles through computer casinos” is just extremely nice to say. I love the character of this song and am yet to completely understand what it’s saying other than personifying some worldwide blackpilled spirit of nihilist evil. What I love is the experience of all encompassing evil in this song, like a worldwide conspiracy connecting everything together that makes it all make sense. It doesn’t make you happier but it makes it make sense. I also love the finality of the big fill near the end that ushers in the outro riff that ties everything up.
Cold Cold World - Blaze Foley: I got heavily into a country music thing this month and spent a bit of time trying to find ‘real’ country, which of course turns out not to exist at all. The entirety of country music is built on a false nostalgia for an imagined time long past when things were real, some unspecified time in the collective consciousness between cowboy times and coal mine times. I don’t say this to say ‘country music is a fraud’ but that it’s built on a foundation of myth and that’s what’s so good about it. It’s constantly reframing the past as it relates to the present and is energised by the friction between them. Blaze Foley is a good example of this in the modern era because he seems to exist more as a myth than a man. He had three studio albums, the master tapes of which all disappeared through various means (lost, stolen, seized by the DEA) and so the majority of his surviving material is live recordings or long-lost studio recordings that resurfaced decades after his death when his fame and mythology already preceded him. He also thankfully lives up to the myth, he was truly a great artist and it’s a shame more of him hasn’t survived.
Where The Golden Wattle Blooms / Why Did The Blue Skies Turn Grey  - Shirley Thoms: Further to what I was saying about country music before, Australian country is a whole other thing. Transferring the myth and the mythmaking to a new location adds another layer of abstraction. Shirley Thoms was the first female solo act to record country music in Australia in 1941 and was most notable for her yodelling of which she is damn fine. This is a great song and a good a starting point as any in trying to trace the origin of country music in Australia. That it's so english in its identity, so evidently imitating an american style (which is in turn imitating a german yodel) is just more good evidence that nothing is 'real' and traditions of the past and future are malleable at all times.
Talkin’ Karate Blues - Townes Van Zandt: Townes Van Zandt is widely regarded as a songwriter’s songwriter and one of the best country songwriters to ever live, but like a lot of great country songwriters also has one or two songs like this - strange comedy songs about learning karate and getting your arm ripped off.
Strange Tourist - Gareth Liddiard: This album is a masterpiece on the level of Ys and it feels criminally underlistened in my opinion. Luckily in the last week or so some renegade has done up the wiki article on it to a couple of thousand words so that's a start. Because this is a song I've listened to one million times and love a lot, it's hard for me to write about it in a general way so instead I'm going to talk about something very specific and new that I've only begun to appreciate recently. The way he uses the vowels of the japanese words to create these assonant runs in lines like "Koda Kumi sang a coda pink as sarin gas / I took a trip to Nagasaki in a rented Mitsubishi / Then went camping in the Jukai under Mount Fuji" and "They found him frozen in a hollow in Aokigahara forest where them harakiri weirdos go" is really something, and a nice illustration of the two sides of Liddiard's songwriting: densely technical poetics in a song about living with a housemate who was a real freak.
I Dream A Highway - GIllian Welch: I’m not even going to go into the lyrics of this because it’s such an out of this world perfect song but I’m going to say this: it’s really something that this song goes for nearly 15 minutes, sits on the same three chords the whole time and never ever feels long. This song is longer than Emily by Joanna Newsom but doesn’t feel like an epic of the same scale at all. It’s just a mournful slow ode to change and decay that goes on forever and could keeping going on for twice as long if it wanted to.
Deep Water - The Middle East: The way the vocals in the verses are delivered, trailing off and mumbling bits and pieces is somehow magical, like it’s more interested in communicating the gist and the feeling than the actual words. You can just pick whatever part of it you like. Petrol stations and a copper mine, the kind of place I think I could die. This song also has two minutes of silence at the end for album reasons so enjoy that.

For today's Venom book review, here is Japan's Venom movie program. Japanese movie theaters sometimes sell souvenir booklets that are not available in North America, so I'm super happy that I was able to acquire this for my collection! This publication contains pictures and information about the movie, including interviews and behind the scenes stuff. It's around the size of a magazine, but with a sturdier cover and pages made of high quality paper. Seriously, my scanner could not do justice to the front cover art (shown above). The cover actually has a metallic shine that looks gorgeous in person.
This booklet is not available in English or French (although there are a few little bits of English text here and there), but there are plenty of pics to enjoy. Some of them are in full color, and some of them are in black-and-white... well, perhaps black-and-pewter would be a more accurate description, because the program uses a silvery gray instead of white. It looks lovely, although some of the images are a bit darker than they would have been if regular black-and-white had been used.
Want an example of the contents? Check out this two-page spread from the center of the booklet, which shows the development of Eddie and the Venom symbiote’s relationship:
Tumblr media
Sorry for the bad photo, but a two-page spread of that size is way too big for my scanner. Anyway, hopefully you can still see how that spread compares two images. One is a frightened Eddie having a face-to-face conversation with the Venom symbiote for the first time, and then the second pic is from near the end of the movie, with Eddie and the symbiote working together to stop Drake's rocket. Awww, they fell in love and saved the world!
Keep reading for the rest of the book review, plus a few more pictures!
The Introduction section of this booklet is illustrated with a stunning two-page spread that is half Venom, half Eddie. It's the same art that was used as the Blu-ray cover for the North American release of the movie, but in a huge size so the details can be seen more clearly. Wow! After that is a story synopsis and a few pages of screenshots from the movie. Here are two of those screenshots:
Tumblr media
Next, there's an interview with Tom Hardy, and then a cool of drawing of Venom. So although most of the art in this book consists of screenshots from the movie (and a few behind the scenes pics), there are some additional images! Here is the drawing of Venom:
Tumblr media
After that is the Making of Venom section, which is in black-and-pewter. I tried to scan one of the pictures from this part so you can get an idea of what I mean by "black-and-pewter", but once again my scanner couldn't really do it justice. Anyway, here it is:
Tumblr media
It just looks black and gray in the scan, but if you see the booklet in person you'll notice that the gray has a slight metallic shine to it. Pretty! Anyway, for some reason the Making of Venom section stops after two pages so the booklet can cover a bunch of other stuff, and then resumes later. So the first part of this intermission is for short Cast Interviews with Riz Ahmed, Michelle Williams, and Jenny Slate. Then the booklet switches back to full color for a Cast Profiles page featuring Tom Hardy, Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed, Jenny Slate, and Reid Scott.
Next is an interview with the movie's director, Ruben Fleischer. This interview is illustrated with some screenshots from the movie that have been modified with different colors. So a picture of Eddie sprinting down a corridor has been altered to look yellow, and a shot of Riot attacking looks greenish, and so on. After that is the center of the booklet with the two page-spread that I showed earlier in this review, then a column called "Kowakute Tanoshii Entertainment Venom" ("Scary and Fun Entertainment Venom"), and a couple more pages of screenshots.
Then the booklet switches back to black-and-pewter for the rest of the Making of Venom section, and after that it switches back to full color for the remainder of the booklet, starting with another cool drawing of Venom. Next is a Filmmakers page that credits some of the other people who worked on the movie, then a page with two more screenshots. This is followed by a column called "Kyouakuna Shugosha Venom" (Um... something like "Brutal Guardian Venom"? I guess it's the Japanese equivalent of Lethal Protector Venom). And to illustrate Venom's role as a brutal guardian, after that column there is a two-page spread of Venom defending Mrs. Chen from the "protection money" guy.
After that is another credits page, and then a page with comments from three of the voice actors who worked on the Japanese dub of the movie. Here are the Japanese voice actors (from left to right) for Venom, Eddie, and Anne:
Tumblr media
For those of you who don't recognize those names/faces, Shido Nakamura (Venom) is the voice of Ryuk in Death Note, Junichi Suwabe (Eddie) is the voice of Victor Nikiforov in Yuri!!! on Ice, and Shoko Nakagawa AKA "Shokotan" (Anne) is a singer and also a presenter on Pokemon Sunday.
The booklet comes to an end with full color versions of the Eddie and Venom portraits from the Making of Venom section, and a couple of advertisements for Venom stuff. Check out this ad for a Venom figurine:
Tumblr media
Overall, the Venom movie program is beautiful! It's so cool that Japanese theaters sell stuff like this! By the way, in Japan there are also little mini-posters called "chirashi" that are used to promote movies. I was able obtain a couple of those for Venom as well. Yay! So I'll take this opportunity to show those to you now. The first one has a very simple design, showing Venom's eyes:
Tumblr media
In the above poster, the small line of Japanese text says "Tom Hardy", and as I'm sure you can probably guess, the larger line of text says "Venom".
The other mini-poster I have is the same art as the front cover of the movie program, although it doesn't have the metallic shine:
Tumblr media
Cool, huh? Was the Venom movie promoted in unique ways in your area? If so, I would love to hear about it!
Well, I guess that’s it for today. Gosh, this was a long post, heh. I hope you enjoyed it! Keep my checking my blog for more Venom content! :)
