Frieren: Beyond Journey's End Episode 9 Review - Three Heroes, Three Demons, Three Fights

Three heroes, three demons, three fights. 3+3+3 = 9. This is episode 9. It all makes sense now. Math jokes aside, this episode is seriously action-packed and it’s amazing. It’s well-animated and well-written and I can’t wait to talk about it for this review!

It’s rather unfortunate that the fight between Frieren and Aura has to be pushed onto the next episode, but it was nice to see what sort of magic she has. Aura is a terrifying demon nonetheless. Her Scales of Obedience makes it so that those with weaker mana have to obey her until death. Because she is so powerful, this means that her mana will always be the dominant one. However, it does have its weaknesses; anyone with a strong will can temporarily repel its effects, but those with a stronger mana than hers will cause the magic to backfire. Since Frieren is a mage who has lived for over a millennia, I’m sure Frieren has some way to counterattack this—she’s a powerful mage, after all.

The battles of Fern vs Lugner and Stark vs Linie were the highlights of this episode. If this were a typical battle shounen manga, the opponents would’ve switched with Fern battling Linie and Stark battling Lugner; this is not a typical battle shounen manga, however. The opponents Fern and Stark face are those that match their fighting style and I love that the writers did this. I love the sheer difference in battles between mages and warriors.

In Fern’s case, she was COLD and I loved it so much. One would expect mages would just be backup support for warriors in a fantasy setting story, but not for this one. Fern is a badass. She can conjure up magic so fast that it looks as if she’s sniping Lugner. I love that she’s actually using nothing too fancy and she’s just spamming the same spell over and over again. I just love that her expression never changed from start to finish. Even when Lugner impaled her, she was still expressionless as if it was just a typical day for her. I just love how mages are written in this show and as someone who loves mages, this made me so happy.

For Stark, he was mainly caught off-guard with how Linie’s attacks were just like Eisen’s. Linie’s ability allows her to mimic the fighting style of anyone she observes; since she had seen Eisen in the past, she is able to replicate his moves. However, the reason why Stark kept losing was because he was scared; he got cold feet and because he wasn’t too confident in beating his master. However, Eisen gives the best advice I’ve seen in an action show by far: you won’t lose if you keep standing up. That’s the wisest thing I’ve heard anyone say and it is the whole-hearted truth. Victory always comes for those who are most persistent. Stark showed that is the case. Linie may imitate Eisen’s moves, but the brevity of her attacks don’t match. This was why Stark was able to finish her off with one hit; remember that Eisen said that Stark is so strong that he can easily surpass him one day to the point that it scared him into attacking him and leaving his forehead scarred.

One last detail I want to point out that is one of the floating armor puppets has the same pendant as Granat’s. If you also look closely, the soldier that temporarily resisted Aura’s spell had that exact pendant and the sword that the graf used against Lugner in the previous episode. That soldier was Granat’s son. I love that little detail! Animation-wise, I think the detail with Stark putting on his coat and Fern taking off her coat and throwing it away were seriously well-animated as well.

Anyways, I can’t wait to see what sort of fight Frieren vs Aura will be like and how it will play out. I hope it will be as action packed as this one. What was your favorite part about this episode?

Jupiter would tentatively go ask Kelly why that might be happening and she tells him what she thinks, they (Kelly, Liny, Jupiter) end up sitting down and Liny just kinda, strangely knows everything, observant ass

Steven is staying closer to Caution due to Caution being the most safe, he had to deal with Zack and knows partially what would have happened to Steven without having to ask him

Caution also knows about the possible conditioning Steven would have gone through, so he, unlike everyone else does speak to him in a similar way Zack would have, without negative conisations, its not bad it's normal and it's the only familiar thing Steven would have in the camp

Caution also had saved his life so trusts Caution more, he doesn't take much care or notice of Jupiter, and Jupiters not mad about him being near Caution (since he knows he wouldn't harm him) he just wants to know

you can really track how stressed I am by how much I post and draw, but mostly post . It's not me living a whimsical life, just a stressed-out artist hiding under the desk dreading emails, sorry about that.

The good news is I finally got another storyboarding gig, and I can breathe now, wooo! It starts in a couple of weeks, and I have finally time to sit and contemplate time, so if anyone is interested, my comms are open.

nini hasn’t written a song in months. not since she came out, really. she figured that songs would be much easier to write now that she knows she likes girls—and it is, when you have actual experience. but since she doesn’t, inspiration doesn’t come so easy.

so she gives her all to the new musical instead. the stage is familiar, the drama department a second home. it feels like she might actually have a shot to be the leading lady this time. her life revolves around lines and ensemble harmonies until a new girl shows up. and something in the air shifts. she can’t put her finger on it at first—she can sense that there’s an effortlessness to her, like she fits right in.

she expected it’d be fun to have a new person around. what she didn’t expect though, was to find out that they’re auditioning for the same role. despite being destabilized, she had long decided that this year was hers, and that she wouldn’t let anything get in her way.

it’s then that, the words come back. first, it’s just to get the feeling out, scattered thoughts adorning nini’s homework. then it’s because she can’t help it, full on lyrics are typed at full speed in her notes app, before she can forget them.

leo is not…fond of nini. the way she sees it, she tries too hard. she’s all smiles, sweetness and drama, like she’s the main character in a disney channel original movie (ironic, i know). it’s too perfect. too rehearsed. it’s exhausting. and above all, it sounds so fake. the worst part? everyone seems to fall for it. and that’s what annoys her most.

always the observant, nini doesn’t fail to notice how they didn’t exactly hit it off. initially, she brushes it off and decides to move forward with the production. but no matter how hard she tries, she can’t stop looking. and even as leo pointedly looks away, her eyes often betray her—as they drift back to nini when she thinks nobody’s watching.

she just can’t get past the kiss ass girl-next-door act. however, the more time she spends time around them the more she realizes, every theater kid is dramatic. every one of them acts as if the world is their stage. there’s no such thing as "normal" in the drama department. so why does it only bother her when it’s nini?

why does her laugh ring in her ears long after she’s gone? why does she notice her tilting her head when listening to someone? why does she find herself watching, listening—like i care, like it matters?

she’s angry at herself for it. she should be enjoying being on her first musical. she hates how everytime their paths cross, she can’t get her out of her head for the whole day. she hates how her breathing halts when nini sings, hates the way she hesitates now and bites back the sarcasm that once would’ve come without thinking.

all of it feels like a push to put a name on something—something she’snot ready to face, or at least recognize.

leo is not fond of nini. but what she really hates is the way that statement feels less true every day.

to make things even better, it’s only fitting that we end up being casted as gabriella and sharpay.

Starting to dig into dots and points deeper led to the writing of Wassily Kandinsky. Inspired by his observations on the dot on a background, I went and made a few variations with two dots, and observed myself how and what kinds of tensions I could build. I again decided on compressing these images down (after a really shocking amount of data has been used up by my iPad’s really useless sync options, this feels like I am actually stupid for compressing at all; had to turn off what I hope is most of this nonsense, but will keep an eye on that mess: 1.5gb just happening in the background is just wrong).

The grid is three rows, top row is naïvely positioning the second dot, middle row is using golden ratios as guides, bottom row is golden ratios but more organically placed:

Working with the iPad has been a struggle the last hour, but I am working through my ire, for the benefit of myself and my studies: and I am glad that something I picked up from Kandinsky’s “Punkt und Linie” worked out just right using compression: the dots are not numerically perfect circles (because they were in Adobe Illustrator, and I did think of being a fiend and asking people if they can tell which of two overlapping circles was a little less perfect), because, even according to him, absolutes do not exist in nature.

Absolutes don’t exist at all.

This was much more satisfying than I could expect. I am glad I understood that I don’t understand dots at all. I am looking forward to spending more time with putting dots in places.

One odd thing I will need to revisit in the future: while trying to export using websafe colors again, there was an unexpected dithering going from roughly the left bottom up to the middle and then to the right side, tied to the resampling type. Let me show you what I mean:

Okay I'm gonna ramble a bit about that silly fairytale-ish NemxSym AU that's been living in my head for... A Lot of months. Because I've been awake long enough to not worry about it and I will probably worry about it later but that's a future Lini problem.

So basically this is kind of a fairytale AU, fey and kingdoms with knights and princesses and stuff like that. Originally it was SolxSym because I'm pretty sure it sprouted from one of Hirokiyuu's three sentence writes, but as all things goes it eventually turned to NemxSym in my head.

It started off with Sol being the only royal heir of the kingdom they're living in, and them needing to strike an alliance with the sorta-close fey kingdom because idk reasons, outside human enemies and they can't afford the fey getting on their bad side too? It's not exactly fleshed out but I haven't planned on writing anything serious about it anyway so -shrug-. Whatever, the alliance is very important.

Sooo yeah, in the original, it was Sol x Sym, but as time moved on, I figured "Nem would do that if Sol was in love with someone else because she's protective like that." Which is really just an excuse to further my NemxSym agenda. but it works (She's high up enough on the nobility ladder that it works in universe).

The start is, rough. In a way? Nem is scared because marriage wasn't exactly on her to-do list and nobody really knows much about the fey and how they work? Like everyone is wary, but they do need this. And of course this silly fey prince is Sym who is very excited to be staying in the human kingdom and learning more about them, because he's very bored with how stagnant are among the fey. (the fun of long lived races and all that).

But... surprising her, he's also very respectful and understanding of her situation. He keeps his distance, puts a hand up in pretense of holding her but it's just to fake a kiss during the wedding. Happily spends the wedding night sleeping on the couch (after having been confused about her being nervous about it because he really had no plans on intimacy) and probably keeps sleeping there until they get separate rooms after a few weeks.

So her life continues mostly the same. Unexpectedly. She kind of does keep her distance though, because she doesn't really like the thought of being married and he is a bit odd and she really has no idea what to expect there so... it's just easier not to engage? Which Sym is perfectly fine with, he's all smiles and friendliness towards any human he meets, even though most of them takes Nem's lead and avoids interacting as much as possible. Which, really, doesn't seem to trouble him...

Except it does. Only, he's so adamant on respecting people's boundaries that he refuses to show that over the course of like two years, he becomes very lonely. Having gone from being surrounded by his own kind to living alone among humans who spare him as few words as possible and often finds excuses to leave the room he's entered (this displacement and loneliness is a bit of a nod towards "Disable the Array"). Until one day his sister Constellation comes to visit which has him suddenly a lot happier than people have seen him in a long time.

Only problem is that she sees right through his charade and calls him out on it. That she's never seen him so miserable before and how does he imagine this will go over if their Queen finds out how the humans are treating him? If Constellation can see through him so easily there's no way he can hide how he's doing, should the others come by, and then the alliance is pretty much garantueed to be broken. And yeah, she's going to have some words with his wife, because he really should at least have some support there.

And of course, he's instantly all up in arms about it, protesting because he genunely doesn't want Nem to be burdened by this. She's already dealing with enough, having been forced into this situation in the first place. He'll sort this out. Definitely, just don't put this on her.

So Constellation relents, but comments that he'd better up his theatre game before the fey queen finds out, or actually find a way to sort this out. So that's a fun little bit of pressure 'cause you know, it's not like he was dealing with enough already.

And as if we haven't invoked enough silly tropes already, this is where we add accidentally spying on a conversation somehow. With Nem (and maybe Sol?) overhearing the entire thing and having a bit of a realization that things aren't going so well after all and they do need to fix this somehow. (and also, he's been keeping this to himself to protect her? That won't 'cause difficult feelings at all.)

So later that night Nem's just, suggesting to Sym do something together the next day, to which he is surprised and delighted at first, but then she kinda nervously keeps going? Just listing a bunch of different things and parties and stuff they could attend and Sym gradually goes from happy to a sinking realization and that fake happy mask gradually dropping.

"... You overheard me speaking to Constellation?"

"No! I mean- maybe a little bit, but-"

"I see..." -the most forced attempt at his usual soft smile ever- "Please don't concern yourself with it. The last thing I wish for is to burden you further, I'll get this sorted out."

And then he absconds to have his own little breakdown because she knows now, and she's going to feel bad no matter what he does and he can't just fix this? And meanwhile Nem is having her own little moment of "Wtf why didn't I realize this sooner? He's been notihng but kind and I've just been avoiding him? Two years and I haven't even tried to make friends?"

It may or may not end with Nem kicking down the door to his room to actually sit him down and have a long chat about all of this because yeah, neither of them went into this with the intention of love, but they can at least try to be civil and upfront with each other.

After that it kinda settles into a standard slowburn of gradually realizing that they actually do enjoy hanging out with each other, and with Nem (and Sol contributing) being more openly friendly with him, other humans starts to feel more at ease chatting with the odd fey and... yeah, it sorts itself out eventually. Slowburn romance and all.

(Also I feel like the first thing Nem suggests for their real activity together after their proper talk is that they go for a ride around the area together. Sym agrees because he's happy to be included. Sym has never ridden a horse before. Nem finds it hilarious when this thousands-year old fey turns out to be terrified of even a light trot around the castle grounds. It's a good ice breaker.)

...Okay, now I'm gonna crawl back in under my rock and let future Lini deal with the regrets.

SO, I come here today to talk to you about Aziraphale, Jane Austen and the double life he lives.

Because Nina teasingly refers to Aziraphale as being mysterious and surprising as a dark horse

and you know who else is referred to as equally surprising, a dark horse? Jane Austen

and I like how with Jane, we get Crowley's AND Aziraphale's version of the same person, who we very well know wrote books.

From Aziraphale, we get the things we mostly know about Jane: A novelist who held cotillion balls.

From Crowley, we get her secret outlaw activities: Jane was the brains behind a Robbery, a Brandy smuggler, and a master spy.

And, as Aziraphale didn't know about Jane Austen's criminal career, Crowley didn't know about her artistic endeavors. Her good side is hidden from Crowley, and her bad side is hidden from Aziraphale.

But also, there are some interesting parallels between Jane fucking Austen AND Aziraphale.

The minisodes show us that Aziraphale was an unwilling alcohol smuggler in 1941

he can also fool everyone when the time matters to his side and to Hell's side. In fact, his job as an angel is basically being a spy.

But also, he wrote extensively, he has many diaries that are just lying around in his shop

And of course, he has organized at least ONE cotillion ball

And, the brains behind ...well, many plans at this point, including saving Job's children, manipulating the room to make the angels believe those are Job's new kids, playing his own game for thousands of years. Aziraphale is the one finding Clues and finding who Adam was back in the Armagedidnt. I wouldn't put it past him to be paying his own part in the three-dimensional chess by going back to heaven.

It is very deliberate that the minisodes show mostly Aziraphale backstory, from his own point of view, he knows very well what he has done, the good and the bad.

And that's exactly my point. I think Crowley doesn't get the full picture of Aziraphale just yet

We know they don't communicate very well. And even after all their years together, they still have very strict preconceived conceptions about what angels are supposed to be and what demons are supposed to be, even when they themselves transgress those all the time.

I'm fairly convinced that Crowley's "You don't dance" surprised tone in the ball is carried from the idea that angels don't dance from season one, even tho we know from God's narration that Aziraphale does.

After 6k years Aziraphale not only is still surprising Crowley with cotillion balls and firearm licenses, and, as Crowley didn't know Jane's ordinary life, it makes me think Crowley really doesn't know about Aziraphale's diaries detailing their history together. (Bit of a Chekov's gun from Neil, imo)

note: From what I know, there is no such thing as the 1810 diamond robbery, it being entirely fictional but I am going deep into the suspension belief and run with it
