Goncharov, Star Wars, Stonewall, and Disco, and the 1970s: an epiphany.

ETA: This is a discussion of Goncharov as a meme and how it relates to Queer culture, therefore I am not tagging it with the “unreality” tag. Goncharov is not a real film, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t important; for reasons I will now explain.

I may be going crazy, but I think I am on to something regarding the true meaning of the whole Goncharov phenomenon, and it's kind of related to Vaporwave and the image that people who didn't grow up in the 1980s or early 1990s (or who have hazy memories of it from their earliest childhood) have enshrined it in the "aesthetic" of vaporwave. But while the themes of Vaporwave are tied to capitalism and consumerism, the "aesthetic" of the 1970s has very different associations.

The whole 70s-to-80s transitional vibe is a favorite topic of mine: right before the Muskrat bought twitter, I tweeted a whole thread about how Panos Cosmatos channels that whole vibe better than nearly any director I've ever seen. (Yes, even Quentin Tarantino - fight me.)

People are watching the new Star Wars media, which are all based around the Original Trilogy and therefore have sort of the same 70s "aesthetic look" of the time in which those movies were made. George Lucas was incorporating and repurposing as much regular stuff that existed in the 1970s that he could, and it contributed to his "used, lived in future" vibe that I think people really glommed onto when they saw the films.

For example: Aunt Beru's outfit from the first film looks like something the actress could have worn on the street in 1977 without anyone giving her a second glance.

People all over the film (but particularly in the scenes on Tatooine) were wearing regular clothes and then making them over or putting accessories over them to make them look futuristic and alien; "Star Wars Bounding" before that was really even a thing. Their regular 1970s street clothes.

This is related to Goncharov because: people are watching Andor and The Mandalorian, and they're starting to ask "what happened to the 1970s aesthetic? Why don't we bring that back?"

Even more than the 60s and the 80s were at various points, the 70s have for a long time been a punchline for bad taste, but there's something more sinister to it beyond merely sneering at the outdated fashion of a previous decade. And it hit me while I was watching this video about the rise of Disco and how Disco's origins were connected with the Stonewall Riots.

The joke about the Goncharov film hoax is how it's a "forgotten film" and about "analyzing the themes of Goncharov." About themes of homoeroticism, about two men (one of them a Discotheque owner on the run from a repressive regime) and two women who are in love, all of whom are unable to consummate that love, because of toxic masculinity and cultural expectations. About clocks being a frequent and repeating symbol - about the characters’ time running out. And the film basically disappearing from public knowledge and being forgotten for decades because these themes were "ahead of their time." (All of this originating from a post about a pair of knockoff boots.)

Because this is a metaphor for the LGBTIQ experience in the 1970s if ever there was one. About a time when an intersection of Queer-BIPOC culture proudly asserted itself for a single shining moment in time - then was eventually subject to both a bigoted, racist backlash and a horrific epidemic so damaging and deadly that we're still analyzing the human cost and the effect it had on society as a whole. Queer culture exploded onto the scene in the 1970s - and then its time suddenly ran out. Or was cut short.

Goncharov - or rather, the spirit and the moment in time that it represents - wasn't "forgotten." It was buried. First under a racist, homophobic/transphobic backlash, then by the malignancy of Reaganism and the AIDS virus that Reagan and his policies enabled to spread and kill thousands. Under the sneering condescension and bigotry of the people who want this spirit to stay buried.

But this spirit is unkillable. Tumblr just gave this spirit a name: Goncharov.

This same spirit is in Andor, to a point - because Queer culture is being actively repressed by the usual bigots and fascists, and Star Wars in general has a running theme of resisting oppression, and it is firmly anchored to its 1970s roots despite taking place "a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away." Spoiler warning for the Andor season finale: but it was impossible for me to see the scenes of rebellion and not flash back on this recent tweet from Dan Savage in the wake of the Club Q shooting:

One of the things I think about all the time is what would have been if the right wing bigoted backlash had been turned back, and how things might be different if Reaganism and the AIDS crisis had never happened. What our culture might have become. How much further ahead we might be than we are now.

We're still facing that same toxic right wing backlash right now, but it's our duty to resist and survive however we can, hoping that this time we might turn the tide.

Stonewall lives. Disco lives. Goncharov lives. Long live the Rebellion.

Are you named after anyone? Yes… my cousin who lives in Italy. I've met her only twice tho.

What sports do you play/have played? As a kid I played hockey, basketball and volleyball. But I was not good at any of them. I used to watch soccer with my Dad, and I usually try catch a little of Italy or Japan if they're playing in the world cup. As an adult I don't watch or play any sports besides what I mentioned above, unless you count esports. Then I watch a shitload of all of it for my job ε-(‐ω‐；)

Do you use sarcasm? It really depends on my mood. I am a bit ruthlessly sarcastic if someone pisses me off enough. But that usually only comes out when strangers are being rude to servers at restaurants or bars, or when someone is hassling the chick at the checkout. Or other times when people forget the world is a shared space and common courtesy is free.

What is the first thing you notice about people? This is a good question, I don't think I have a universal answer to this question. I think it varies depending on the circumstances of meeting a person. Face-to-face, I do pay a lot of attention to people's noses because I have a weird theory about what you can learn about a person from their nose but it would take too long to explain in this tag game. Also, I don't think it's the first thing I notice. I think it's something I start to pay attention to once I know someone for a little while. To give a more solid answer to the general vibe of this question though, the first thing I usually remember about people is what they did/said to make me laugh.

What is your eye color? Blue-grey. (omggg twinsies Vi!)

Scary movies or happy endings? What about an alternate third option: open-ended existential finales that leave you with many questions but still feeling overtly satisfied. Like watching Mulholland Drive!

This is one is mostly here for the contrast between the soft vocals in the verse and the noisy vocoded vocals of the refrain and bridge as a parallel between 13 and Jake honestly.

Man, there's a lot of Orville Peck and the Revengance soundtrack on this list huh? Anyway, this is kind of the antithesis of what 13 wants to be, and it's this fear of just being a tool for violence in a self-justifying "that's just how it is"/rules of the jungle sense.

Bill Evans et. al - Someday My Prince Will Come

No lyrics on this one, it's an instrumental. It's a pretty version of a jazz standard that, when it has lyrics, is all about yearning through loneliness, which is very Jake, and not entirely dissimilar to 13 for that manner.

The Algorithm - floating point - Vaporwave Remix

No lyrics in this one either, strictly vibes mode. This is kind of 13's theme, with the mechanical brutality of the original toned down by a downshift in tempo, lending it a slightly dreamy and inspirational vibe to it.

There's Jake and 13 in a nutshell for me. They're both deeply wounded men in their own ways, and the most important way they grow closer is by opening up about their struggles and allow each other to be vulnerable.

This is kind of how I view Jake's mindset in the early days of their relationship. He can hardly believe it, and he is very dependant on 13 not letting Jake turn him away, on account of his neurosises.

What got you into motley crue?

oh that's a fun and long and convoluted story, actually!

back in 2017, I got really into glam metal by buying a Twisted Sister album (Best of the Atlantic Years) on sale. Then, when Fall Out Boy released their album Mania in 2018, one of the verses in the song "Young and Menace" mentioning Nikki Sixx intrigued me and kinda stuck with me for a while. This one:

"And I've lived so much life, lived so much life

I think that God is gonna have to kill me twice

Kill me twice like my name was Nikki Sixx"

That didn't quite lead me to Mötley Crüe just yet tho!

First, I got more into retro synthwave songs (imo a natural progression from my appreciation of vaporwave and futurefunk and my slowly developing obsession with everything 80s that had been brewing for a couple years at that point), a classmate got me more into hardrock and metal, which reignited my love for Iron Maiden on the side, I then discovered darker/heavier synthwave, which led me to the DANCE WITH THE DEAD remix of Master of Puppets

which then led me to their remix of Kickstart My Heart (my very first brush with a Mötley Crüe song <3)

But that wasn't it either, not there yet by a long shot!

Then it took another 2-ish years and my budding Metalocalypse obsession inbetween for me to stumble upon a Mötley Crüe x Male Reader comfort fanfic (yes, sometimes I just look for nice x reader comfort stories for my mental health, don't question it) that really got me into the band! It was "No Chicken or Soup" by NewBikeWithThePlateReadThe666 on AO3!

At first I couldn't really visualise all 4 of them, had a hard time telling Nikki, Tommy and Mick apart. Then I told myself I need to gather more knowledge about them, clued into the fact I already kinda knew one of their songs through the remix I mentioned above, started my insane photo collection, listened to more of their songs, bought the only available album at my local electronics store, and the rest is history 😂👌

A. Thank you for your kind words on this, it's always cool to see people be normal about music instead of insisting I listen to bad stuff.

B. I see that you were unaware of Vaporwave as a music genre so I'm gonna overshare for a moment because I'm autistic about this and I hope that's okay.

Basically as I understand it, and I won't be doing a fully history deep dive but; Vaporwave popped up around 12 years ago with THIS video:

It's arguably a remix, but it was made via a sample of Chris Deburgh's Lady in Red, you can actually hear the exact sample here at 2:40:

The song was essentially slowed down and given a sort of reverby-ethereal vibe to the whole thing. Something I overall enjoyed but found a bit too repetitive for me in the original Nobody Here video.

This sort of "Reverbed Ethereal Vibe" carries through a lot of Vaporwave music such as this:

This one lacks any lyrics at all focusing heavily on melody and I honestly think it's a lot better for it in my opinion because I'm less likely to recognize the repeating than I am with literally two words lol.

Of course, it would be wrong not to mention MACINTOSH PLUS, who basically popularized Vaporwave with FLORAL SHOPPE - 02 リサフランク420 - 現代のコンピュー which you've likely heard before even if you don't recognize the name:

And now is where it branches off into a ton of different micro sub-genres, you have a ton popping up but the one that caught my eye specifically was Future Funk. A sort of focus on the capitalistic boom of the 80's where new tech was all the rage, and brands meant everything. Except with a sort of fun and lively vibe rather than dystopian capitalistic hell. Future Funk also makes use of a lot of anime aesthetics and city pop / J-pop influences.

The big Future Funk influence of the era was SAINT PEPSI, Pepsi was sort of the artist that people looked to in order to say "sure I like Future Funk, at least the GOOD STUFF that isn't like all that cringe shit, I only listen to SAINT PEPSI because he makes GOOD music." Which is :| but the music slaps. Like if Vaporwave is too slow for you, or you're in the mood for something a little more upbeat, here ya go!

Right out the gate we can hear so much more energy here. This was sort of set as the norm for Future Funk, but for a lot of artists it strayed too far from it's Vaporwave roots and some took to making music somewhere in the middle, still upbeat and lively but with more of that classic ethereal feel to it.

To this day I will use this hour long beautiful mix of upbeat future funk classics whenever I'm cleaning the house or driving anywhere or doing anything that really requires me to just have energy.

This SLAPS and I know it by heart because I'm dumb and I've listened to it significantly too much. I think what really makes it for me is that it's not just a playlist video, it's a proper DJ mix seamlessly moving from one song to the next.

ANYWAYS, yea Vaporwave has a ton of sub genres and stuff to look into if anyone has any interest in it. I admittedly got hardcore into Future Funk but there's almost always something for everyone when it comes to Vaporwave.

You've got artists like Blank Banshee, Manapool, VAPERROR, MACINTOSH PLUS, SAINT PEPSI, ΛDRIΛNWΛVE, Vantage, Future Girlfriend 音楽 , 悲しい Android - Apartment , ミカヅキBIGWAVE

There's a ton, including indie artists like Strawberry Station (who's actually a really nice guy, we've spoken on occasion and it was nice to learn he's a chill dude.)
