Note
Longfin batfish has always looked extremely throwable to me
Just like a boomerang! Especially the juvenile.

Note
EEEEEE trick or treat!!!!
gyahaha…you get the nefarious longfin batfish! its juvenile form compared to its adult form is quite dramatic…the colors and behavior of a juvenile are meant to mimic a toxic flatworm to avoid being eaten

Treasure Hunting [Sep-Dec 2021]
During the rolling NSW COVID-19 outbreaks from June onwards, I found somehow that underwater scenes were extremely, extremely soothing. Which was kind of important when just as we came out of lockdown in September, a proper outbreak hit my town for the first time in the pandemic (so like. What, 18 months?).
I wanted to mess around with mermaid details after seeing so many cool mermay illustrations for fish-specific inspired fins and details.
Fish inspirations: • Fin shape + colours - Juvenile Longfin Batfish • Scale colouring - Glasseye Snapper/Blotched Bigeye
• Scale shape and details - Yellow Striped Squirrelfish (Neoniphon Aurulineatus)
• Seaweed Hair - Macrocytis / Giant Kelp
Special mention for the Giant Moray Eels, for Murdermaid’s little pack of friends.

**WATCH TO THE END** Yes, that is an Arowana with Longfin Batfish (Platax teira), your eyes are not playing tricks on you. Batfish are saltwater but are commonly found in the Asian aquarium trade as freshwater, similar to Bumblebee groupers (Epinephelus lanceolatus). Longfin Batfish are a Euryhaline species and can adapt to different levels of salinity. In their juvenile stage, they can be found in brackish estuaries or hanging around mangroves. Like the Bumblebee groupers found in the trade, the batfish are bred in brackish conditions and reared in freshwater. They do surprisingly well and unlike some other Euryhaline species found in the trade, the batfish do not seem to lose the ability with age and are quite comfortable in freshwater conditions. Freshwater Longfin Batfish (Platax teira) has been in the Asian aquatic trade for about 3 years now, so I expect them to hit the western aquatic trade in the next 24 months. What do you all think would you keep a freshwater Batfish if you had the opportunity? #aquariumhobby #fishtanks #fishkeepers #fishkeeping #plantedtank #fishhobby #monsterfish #monsterfishkeepers #freshwatertank #castledawnaquatics #tankbuster #aquascape #monsterfishkeeper #monsterfishtank #aquariumtank #arowanas #arowana #tankbusters #fishofinstagram #fishtanksofinstagram #aquariumofinstagram #arowanalovers https://www.instagram.com/p/CTfXwmlhmeK/?utm_medium=tumblr

Batfishes are often seen at our dive and snorkel sites. Relaxed and slow swimming, they form very elegant formations while schooling. There are 5 different species and they mainly feed on plankton Not 100% sure, but we think that the big school in our last picture is the Platax Teira or Longfin Batfish. Special about them all is also the total different look from juvenile to adult. At first they look very much like a leaf and we see them at that stage frequently in our harbor. #lumbalumbadivingmanado #wonderfulindonesia #bunaken #northsulawesi #batfish #housereef #diveholiday #divingindonesia #diveindonesia #diveholiday #holiday #scuba #scubaindonesia #scubadiving #snorkeling #duiken #tauchurlaub #diving #plongee #oceanlover #dyk #tauchen #uwphotography #indonesia (at Lumbalumba Diving - Manado) https://www.instagram.com/p/COWjplMh2Xx/?igshid=1rtya9ica5ddy
