Looking at Lucien, without any previous knowledge of his character, one would assume he is of a cherubic essence - a flighty, abashed thing that curves to touches and loves art in a sort of secret, devout way priests kneel to the crosses only in private. It’s his golden hair and blue eyes, soft lips and a pale complexion prone to redness in the cold. It disarms him, deceivingly so. 

Only once one knows him does one begin to understand why Wilde picked such a pretty description for Dorian Gray. He’s rotten from within.

The building breathes with sleepy, mumbled chatter. These halls are much older and wiser than you - returning here after summer is always a great pleasure. Lucien meets you by the exit of the library and falls into step, wordless. He seems tired in the bleak light, and he smells faintly of cologne and alcohol. 

“Whitman’s a bore.” He says instead of a greeting. You know he pretends to hate the poet only because you like him. Lucien always insists your taste is paltry, “Fitting, I suppose, for the people that enjoy his poetry.”

“At least he has something meaningful to say,” You comment dully, “unlike someone I know.”

He gives you a look, one that ranges between annoyance and admiration, but doesn’t fire back. He walks close, shoulder to shoulder. He’s usually quiet. Perhaps he had missed you over the summer.

Surely you had missed him greatly, but you’re not one to ever admit such a thing.

he details his request slowly, styly, making sure each syllable sounds like poetry. bewitching and wicked, lucien should never be trusted, and usually you resist his charms with cold logic -you posses a tremendous control over your emotions. surviving med school takes guts and a will of iron, and you are not easily swayed.

yet he knows your weakness. a tender heart lies beneath a cold shell that melts from each time from reciting the simplest of words: “i wandered lonely as a cloud”. you, too, had known true solitude, had felt the numbness of living as a sad ball of smoke in the endless sky, straying somewhere, destined to forever roam until there would be nothing left of you.

lucien lands his hand atop of yours, warm and inviting, but his smug smile stays. you briefly ponder whether he is capable of anything genuine. either way, you are not one to judge. in the shadowed privacy of the library, he is bolder. more willing to express his attraction, despite how fiercely he’d deny it anywhere else.

it doesn’t matter. you and he both know who warms your bed at night, who desperately holds onto you, and who shamefully scrams at first dawn pretending nothing happened.

“(name),” he calls you, making you hum. despite his best efforts, your eyes remain strained on your essay, hand gliding down the page. your handwriting is unintelligible. that is a requisite for a future doctor, “are you hearing a word i’m saying?”

“no.” you grumble under your breath, shrugging off his hold, “go bother someone else.”

he leans in, all his pleasantness gone as an anxious frown strings his features, “...i need your help.” he hisses. you ignore him. he tugs on your sleeve, “please. it’s important.”

he’s never one to beg, granted, you had assumed the word did not belong in his vocabulary. so you relent, more curious than concerned. you put down your pen and slump against your seat, cold (colour) eyes roaming his flushed face, “...well?”

“i...” he glances around to make sure no one is eavesdropping, and you almost scold him for assuming students of medicine don’t have better things to do than partake in meaningless gossip. but before you can, his eyes meet yours, desperate, “i...i need you to help me dispose of a body.”

oh. this is certainly not what you had been expecting.

preposterous and entirely unneeded, yet lucien, ever fond of dramatics, drags you along with him to a meeting of poets and fanatics and you can only spare glares and dissatisfied sighs as the geniuses of the new age introduce themselves. are they beneath you? in a way. students of medicine always look down on those who shy away from the devastating work of modern magic. science is just another fancy word for alchemy. while you toil at the labs and morgues and silent classrooms trying to sustain life, possibly for eternity, they hopelessly try to grasp it, hold onto it, even if, in the end, their efforts produce only a few good lines or possibly an underrated novel. though students of medicine are known to be prudes and not indulge with heretics. it’s not a written rule to be a snob, but it might as well be, since everyone from your department follows it religiously.

are you secretly impossibly fond of these aforementioned heretics? absolutely. and that’s why you forgive lucien for taking you to their damned meeting. perhaps it’s morbid curiosity, or simply an infectious desire to play a twisted version of god, but once lucien starts crowing about acid baths, you hum, oddly impressed with his foresight. not the best plan, though you suppose it can be forgiven given the...dire circumstances.

ginsberg, a handsome, if not a bit anxious, poet offers you a cigarette from his shaky hand and you hardly spare it a glance, “lu,” you call the blond instead, making him halt his grand tour about the room and turn to you, “how exactly do you plan on committing....” -murder? cold blooded killing? granted, for a cause, though murder still. the word does not sit right with you, with your hippocratic oath. “...-this experiment?”

ah, yes, a good old fashioned trial run. a test. a detailed analysis of the human body and how it dissolves faced with raw chemicals.

absolutely diabolical.

...even if it is for the greater good.

briefly you wonder how many disgusting things had been done for the “greater good”, how much progress; wonder if it was worth it.

he seems so abysmally lost standing there against his demolished bedroom walls, so pale, with eyes the size of saucers that plead for help. it suddenly dawns onto you that you are supposed to help more than provide a few formulas or teach a course on which artery, when severed, will make the subject bleed out in a matter of seconds.

no, you’re supposed to be the judge, jury, and the divine punishment, while he remains the innocent lure, a simple spectator that stumbled into the wrong place at the right time.

the thought strikes such sudden rage within you that it almost shows on your face. almost.

but you refrain from such a pitiful display of feeling. you are much too reserved for that. instead, you narrow your eyes subtly, the downward quirk of your lips revealing a tint of displeasure. he knows this expression and it annoys him greatly. you are the only one he knows that does not bend to his wishes; the only one that he can’t manipulate, not fully at least.

“you’ll help, won’t you?” he pipes up, ten steps ahead. this game of chess is tiresome and you have an exam next week. lucien predicted your tactical retreat. must’ve sensed that you were about to excuse yourself and avoid him for the better part of the year - avoid everything that does not involve a hookup, that is. the scheming, gossiping, and crime you can do without. your talents are wasted on these buffoons.

“i already did.” you reply calmly, pushing the paper his way. on it you had scribbled a few quick formulas and instructions. nothing too suspicious, with a handwriting as messy as it gets. almost unintelligible. could belong to anyone, really. “if you have trouble reading - which i doubt the likes of you should - consult a dictionary.” you finish, standing up. something between a whine and a wheeze escapes his lips, hands reaching to latch onto your shoulders but you briskly evade him. striding to the door, you wish ginsberg a good day and good luck to lucien.

“you’ll need it.” you add dryly before exiting.

You finish reading with a slight quiver in the back of your throat, an action Lucien notices, raises a brow at. He sits bored in his room on wine spilled sheets with smoke spiralling out of the tip of his cigarette and you sit next to him, far enough to breathe easily yet close enough to feel almost naked under his inquisitive gaze. He is not impressed, naturally – he never is. Your paper crumbles in your hands.

“Say it.” You demand. He shrugs. A sly smile tugs o the corner of his lips.

“Well,” He draws out, taking a puff, purposely teasing, “--you’re better than Ginsberg.”

“That’s not saying much.” You scoff, leaning back, “He hasn’t even written anything.”

“That’s the point.” Lucien mutters, all too proud, all too smug. You despise him sometimes and he knows it, enjoys it even. Grinning at your misery had always been his favourite free time activity.

…And what of yours? You spend much time in his room, daydreaming or getting high, preferably both at the same time. That is, of course, because just like all lovers and sad people you are a poet, and poetry demands the most raw of experiences to express the most raw of emotions. You had written possibly a hundred lines, though none of them were good enough for you, good enough for him. Your last poem was composed whilst listening to vinyls at Lucien’s, while watching him read and dissatisfied rip pages out of expensive text books. There was thunder in your chest, unfathomable feelings boiling within almost ready to burst. Though you did nothing, said nothing, simply observed and scribbled while he cursed under his breath.

The picturesque view of the campus is blocked by a curtain of heavy rain. Lucien’s room is darker, gloomier, and he appears more tired, and suddenly a wild thought occurs to you that he might not have been sleeping well and you were too caught up with your thirst for knowledge and good liquor to notice. He finishes his cigarette and puts it out on the carpet, leaving yet another scar on its surface.

He notes you quiet by his bedside and regards you with a funny look, “What?”

You take a sip of your drink, the taste burning your tongue, the aroma hitting your head, “Nothing.”

His hand lands on the side of your jaw, strangely gentle, and he watches your reaction with glee, “With you,” He draws out, says your name, locks your eyes with his, “it’s always something.”

He is most strange in this way, hot and cold, like an ungrateful child, always wishing for what he cannot have. And he is most confusing in these moments of affection, as a part of you is sure that even a fraction, if not more, of them are fuelled by genuine need of closeness, though by selfishness and amusement as well. One of these days you will simply have to kiss him and stop this game once and for all. Now is not the time, however. You have a poem to finish.

You grab his wrist and pull it away and he laughs, “Not in the mood, Lu.” You utter, finishing your drink and setting it beside the scar on the carpet. His giggles die down when he sees you stand.

“Hey, where are you going?” He inquires, grasping onto the sleeve of your jacket, “Aww, come on, don’t leave. You’re not fucking fun!”

You swat his hand away, “I’ll see you later.”

You are met with a whine and waved off, and you think this is the only interaction of your day, though when you leave his room and close the door behind you you note Allen, first approaching with conviction, now falter in his step and wilt under you gaze.

“O-Oh, hello.” He greets you, religiously avoiding your eyes, appearing shy almost.

“Ginsberg.” Is all you say with a nod of your head before turning on your heel and being on your merry way to the nearest bar. Allen watches you go with a longing look. He can never get close to you, no matter how much he tries. Though, to be completely honest, even if he wished to terribly he would most likely not have enough courage.

Allen spends his afternoon listening to Lucien, as he always does. Though on his bed he finds a crumbled piece of paper, and reads the scribbles on it, and feels a wave of awe wash over him, soaking him to the bone. Lucien comments something about your lack of talent. Allen disagrees whole heartedly, though never voices it. He keeps the poem. The words speak to him too deeply.
