Marat et Le Junius Français

I know it's been a while since I've done a post like this one, but that doesn't mean I've lost interest in writing about little-known anecdotes and adventures of Marat! One of them is the brief and chaotic existence of Le Junius Français, one of Marat's lesser-known newspapers, which he created and published during the month of June 1790.

The probable reason why hardly anyone knows that Junius Français existed (the only Marat historian I've ever seen mention it was Olivier Coquard in his Jean-Paul Marat, une lumière en Révolution : biographie d'un homme des Lumières devenu l'Ami du peuple) is that it only had 13 issues in total. Its publication was somewhat turbulent, lasting only three weeks, for obvious reasons. But it is still, in all its context, a very interesting and surprising periodical.

The creation of the short-lived newspaper comes at a complicated and somewhat hectic time for Marat, who had just returned from London in May and was keen to resume publication of L'Ami du Peuple and join the patriotic press. As usual, Marat had to remain underground, as he continued to be the target of legal proceedings and arrest warrants and the publication of L'Ami du Peuple was, unsurprisingly, banned by the authorities. In addition, there was also a constant fight against forgers - the fake Marat, plagiarists who published newspapers and pamphlets under his name, which may also confirm the influence and popularity he had gained at the time. These forgeries of L'Ami du Peuple began to appear in large numbers from 1790 onwards, and Marat made an effort to defend himself against them as soon as he returned to Paris. Not only him, but the Revolution in general was going through a turbulent situation. There had been conflicts involving bakers and grain, the question of war and federations, as well as other external crises that concerned France.

It was against this backdrop of accusations against conspirators, clandestinity and arrest warrants that Marat created Le Junius Français, a second newspaper, which was published for the first time on June 2, 1790. During its publication, Le Junius Français coexisted with L'Ami du Peuple, and both periodicals were published (almost) every day until the end of the first, in its 13th issue, on June 24.

On the structural aspects of the newspaper, Professor Coquard, already cited above as the main basis of this post, comments in Marat, L'Ami du Peuple [p.243]:

This second newspaper presents itself exactly like L'Ami du Peuple: an eight-page in-oitavo printed on poor quality paper that comes out of the workshops of "Guilhemat et Arnulphe, printers of Liberty, at 23 rue Serpent" and is distributed - door to door only - "every morning at number three rue Contrescarpe-Dauphine". Junius seems to focus more specifically on articles of denunciation, while L'Ami du Peuple is probably looking for more general political analysis. However, the two sheets are quite similar.

The name chosen by Marat for the newspaper, "Le Junius Français", also intrigued me. I found in this note apparently (?) written by G. Eljorf through Le gazetier révolutionnaire, a catalog of periodicals of the time, an explanation that seemed to me quite plausible and accurate about the title:

Lucius Junius Brutus and Marcus Junius Brutus are two figures from Roman history engaged in the struggle against tyranny, that of Tarquin and that of Caesar respectively. The pseudonym Junius had been used by an anonymous English pamphleteer around 1770 in a series of letters critical of the government of George III (Junius Letters).

We can speculate on various reasons why Marat might have created the newspaper in such a complex period. Perhaps it was one of his skillful political strategies to amplify his attacks on his enemies at a time of difficulty, but it could also have been the start of a newspaper that Marat actually planned to maintain, so that he could give L'Ami du Peuple another direction. The intentions and objectives of Junius Français, at least, are clearly explained on page 8 of the first issue:

This journal is particularly intended to follow the deaf maneuvers of the revolution's enemies, to reveal their relations with foreign cabinets, to vent the plots of traitors to the Fatherland, to serve as a cry of alarm, to disconcert their dark schemes.

The history of its sessions will be followed by reflections adapted to the subject, portraits of the authors of the most important motions, of the ministers and of the most remarkable figures in the history of the revolution. Finally, it will report on new events likely to pique public curiosity.

In fact, at least in the first issue - which I analyzed more meticulously than the others - he does what he says. He first scolds the Parisians, in the same fraternal and unmistakable style as L'Ami du Peuple, and then recounts the May 31 session of the National Assembly, where a case of conflict between the grenadiers of the Royal Navy regiment was discussed in which a group of patriots had been brutally mistreated. He speaks briefly about the decisions concerning the civil organization of the clergy and denounces the Dutch. He constantly maintains the spirit of denunciation, calling on the people to take revenge. Although his name only appears in 4th issue, it's not hard to spot Marat's pen in every word.

Marat unfortunately didn't manage to keep publishing Junius Français for long. Certainly, the newspaper ceased publication at the end of June for a number of reasons, and among them there is no doubt that Marat must have been overwhelmed with writing and managing the printing and correspondence for two revolutionary periodicals at once. Expenses, lack of time and problems involving the printers of both Junius and L'Ami du Peuple must have contributed to the sudden demise of this newspaper.

I found it interesting to bring up Junius Français because, as well as being one of Marat's most unknown and neglected works, it is also one of his writings that impresses me the most, since he managed to keep both newspapers going at the same time in a chaotic context in which he had to hide from the police, manage the publication of other of his works, solve plagiarism problems and at the same time pay attention to the political situation in France, which was becoming increasingly tense. His commitment, his incessant dedication to producing even in the most difficult and theoretically impossible times is always fascinating, to say the least, and Junius Français is an example of how Marat's revolutionary activity was frenetic and tireless even underground and under threat from the government. His attempt to maintain the two newspapers, despite failing, went beyond Marat's own limits and was, in a way, a good propaganda tool against his political enemies.

Hi! I have plenty of hcs of her!

Of course my main is that she and Coryo are besties and partners in crime. She is the only one who knows about the poison when Snow starts using it and not only that, she helps him and approve. Another headcanon is that she hates dr Gaul after the snakes and in some of my stories (not all) she will always have scales and, in the worst case, she will have another permanent effect... She will be sterile. She will not be able to have children, ever, and that's why she and Coryo will not end up together: Coryo values heirs, and he has to be with a woman who can give him children. Also, for Coryo, he loves her so much but in a twisted way he knows she deserve better so he doesn't want to be with her romantically because Clemmie has to have a chance at true love. Another headcanon I have is that she is lesbian or bisexual (and if bisexual, Coryo is pretty much the only man she is attracted too). A thing about her (and her relationship with Coryo) is that they don't need to talk to understand each other. In fact, they rarely talk about deep things, and prefer to not acknowledge the big things between them while at the end of the day everything works for the best for them. For example in one of my stories Clemmie knows about the Coryo's food situation and she shares her snacks at school with him without talking. In the same way Coryo knows something is wrong in her home (also in only one story, in others she has loving parents and nothing wrong) so he lets her copy his homeworks without batting an eye. That's how their relationship work. Another headcanon only about Clemmie is that the snake incident change her in a way that she is no longer an happy girl, so she always has this neutral expression and almost never smile anymore.

Anyway, for specifically genderbend au headcanon... Well, lesbian Clemmie was always secretly in love with Corinna, but as the rest of the school she thinks that Corinna has a crush on Sejanus and she tries not to think about a potentially love story with her. I mean, it will never happen, so what's the point? Better be realistic. (And that's the canon with the Snowjanus au, at the end of the day).

Then Corinna tooks everyone by surprise because not only she fell in love with Lucius Gray Baird at the point to be expelled and sent to serve, but she comes back less then an year later heavly pregnant with twins. Clemmie is now sure she would never have a chance and support her bestie with the best she can, and also pity (but envy) Sejanus who is clearly not past his crush but also lives with the couple and is involved in the twins care. Clemmie is always the second in Corinna's climb for power and as in other stories helps her with the poisoning (Corinna doesn't poison herself here) and against paparazzi who want to write scoops about the new president's home (because she is married with a District, had children so young and outside of marriage, and Sejanus still lives with her and Lucius). With times she and Sejanus bond until the night they both confessed their tragic crush of Corinna (I mean... Clemmie tried but at the end of the day is not easy to forger your first love when you work with her everyday and also you killed for her, really killed people for your loved one) and decided that the best course of action is to be together so they can be miserable together at least (coff coff Lucius somehow suggested this because he is in wonder about Clemmie since he knows she killed to protect his family and he has a little crush on her, because Lucius is unhinged like this, and so he wants her close). That's lead Corinna to be extra jealous, first about Sejanus even if she doesn't even admit it to herself, and Lucius (who knows that Corinna had a crush on Sejanus since forever and see in this an opportunity to have Clemmie too) talks to his wife and they both decided that they both will have both Sejanus and Clemmie. So happy ending for all of them 😂

... I suppose that's it 😂

Okay, so for obvious reasons I've seen a lot of modern ofmd au's go for the restaurant au thing, and i love it, but what I'm thinking about (heavily inspired by my love of Leverage) is an art thief au

Stede, the well-off son of a wealthy business owner, has just realized that he is very gay, actually, and so he leaves his ruler-straight Old Money life and fucks off to become a Gentleman Thief. He’s read a bunch of stories about cat burglars and has a whole scrapbook of newspaper clippings covering the Gardiner Museum Heist, the Pink Panthers, and, of course, the famous thief Blackbeard, and he definitely wants to fuck him be just like him.

He hires the crew:

Jim is a trained assassin who prefers knives to guns.

Olu used to be a fence for gems and jewelry at Jackie's polyam thief bar, and now he's just trying to keep Jim alive despite their chronic tendency to hand him all their brain cells and go “yolo."

Lucius is a former pickpocket turned artist/forger.

Pete claims to have been on the famous thief Blackbeard’s crew and may have actually been a low-level goon hired for a few jobs.

Frenchie is a hacker who used to work on the other side (whilst being constantly microagressioned by the snobby military/CEO types/etc) and therefore knows all the ins. He also creates edm music and is active on conspiracy theory boards and is afraid of cats because he believes that they are aliens in disguise studying humanity.

John’s mother does costuming for a theater and he’s consequently very good at makeup and disguises.

Roach went to culinary school and also went through EMT training before turning to crime.

The Swede stole something really valuable from his home country (an orange-shaped gem-encrusted statue known as “The Swedish Faberge Egg”), but due to a lot of bumbling, he was nearly caught like ten times between stealing it and fleeing the country. He gained a reputation because most thieves only heard about the high-profile robbery and not the bumbling, so he is considered something of a legend, known only as “The Swede.” (Stede hires him fully believing the hype.)

And Buttons is a seasoned thief who seems to be able to summon seagulls at will and still longs to make sweet love to the sea and also is known for biting people in fights, which is how he’s escaped law enforcement for so long (he will neither confirm nor deny the rumor that he’s some kind of selkie). He’s also good with safes and locks.

Ed is a famously skilled and ruthless thief who is known for pulling off a huge variety of different jobs. Robbed a casino, stolen art from the Louvre, hit seven banks at once, auctioned off secret government research--you name it, he’s done it. (The truth is, he gets bored.) Just the rumor that he’s planning a heist causes museums to pull all of their displays. His methods tend towards the quick, violent, and brutally effective, and he's tired and disillusioned with them, but he feels stuck maintaining the Blackbeard persona for fear of rivals or law enforcement catching up with him. When he hears that Stede is trying to be a real life Gentleman Thief, like in the movies, he is intrigued.

Izzy, meanwhile, is the actual perpetrator of much of the violence that Blackbeard is credited with. Together, Izzy and Ed are the backbone of the Blackbeard legend: Edward comes up with the brilliant, daring, creative plans, and Izzy carries them out with deadly efficiency. They’ve also been on-again off-again romantic partners/fuckbuddies for years. They live in each other’s pockets, and know each other inside and out, and are able, when pressed, to work together seamlessly. They also make each other miserable a lot of the time, and enable each other’s worst tendencies, and Izzy is hanging all of his identity and self-worth off a job that Ed doesn’t even like anymore.

Ed swoops in and saves Stede from a disastrous robbery, during which all of Ed's crew get arrested besides Izzy, Fang, and Ivan. He decides to stick around and teach Stede how to be a real thief (and maybe kill him to steal his identity. Or maybe fuck him. He hasn’t decided yet).

Izzy is certain that Stede is going to get them all killed.

Also, Mary started painting in earnest after Stede left, but she hasn't heard anything from him, and he hasn't kept up with her at all, so they're both very surprised to meet again at a gallery where Mary is showing some of her work and which Stede is attempting to rob.

(alt. Ed teaches poetry the same way. Izzy is going for a mfa in metalwork but somehow ends up under ed's wing despite their differing focuses. Lucius is stede's TA who's actually a poetry major. Nobody follows the rules obviously)

Ed owns the Grill and his head chef, Izzy runs front of house, and stede stumbles upon what might be the oddest most unconventional gay bar he'd ever seen, and just keeps coming back

Stede runs a nature retreat for troubled teens and Ed has been assigned community service for his parole and he chose it bc it was the shortest amount of time for the hours but he did Not know it was gonna be 24 hours a day in nature looking after dumb kids and he has Regrets but also. he's not entirely sure how this muppet of a man got a whole crew of paroled teens to listen to him and participate in story time and all that shit so he decides he's gotta learn a thing or two from him. Maybe he can use this guy's tips to get Izzy to be less of a tetchy bitch. On the other hand, Stede has absolutely heard of Ed and honestly kind of admires what he did and to have him at his retreat is such a treat! They're going to have so much wholesome law-abiding fun! Absolutely no thoughts of running away with Ed once his parole is over to live on the wild side and commit all the fun sounded crimes his kids are in for.

Stede tries and fails at blind dates and he's clearly been stood up poor guy, Ed thinks he might as well jump in and save him from looking so lonely but fuck man the more they talk the more he realizes this buttoned-up man is actually insane

Ed's been the top dog in this prison for fucking years and really, he could get out any time but the outside world fucking sucks but now this dude who got arrested for tax evasion or some shit is telling all these crazy stories and Stede dude do you wanna get out of here? I've got an escape plan already ready let's fucking bounce and see that huge ball of twine or whatever

So obviously Ed has to teach him how to actually break into cars and not get caught, but maybe save the lesson for sometime when they weren't locked up in a police station, yeah?

as an ode to Stede's genre-bending prowess: Stede is living in Star Trek (TOS) and Ed is living in Cowboy Bebop. All of Stede's crew has bounties on their heads and Stede is just oblivious until Ed comes crashing in and honestly this exploring shit is crazy, why are we even bounty hunters again, Iz?

Ed is a gaming streamer and Stede tries out old recipes on youtube (Dylan B Hollis basically). How they meet is up to you but none of their respective followers expected that guy to show up in their videos but honestly the sexual tension is fun to watch so no one's complaining

I know I already did a rockstar AU but also. Stede runs a Very Respectable Hotel thank you very much and Ed is in the habit of trashing Very Respectable Hotels and honestly who the hell let him book a room here this is going to take ages to clean up, I don't care how hot and charming he is. Ed meanwhile is fucking obsessed with the secret doors that no one is supposed to know about and also is that a fucking waterslide into a hot tub??

Ed gets into a bar fight with Jack and Stede accidentally walks right into his fist and got knocked out and now Ed really kinda has to take him to the hospital and stay until he wakes up and if he stares a little too long and brushes Stede's hair back to see his face better that's no one's fucking business but his own, all right?

Mordred’s Takeover

So... year's been unpleasant in numerous ways. And the election result did not go as I hoped. But in a vent-out of rage here is something I wrote. Needs work but it's a start.

Mordred was making another of his speeches to the crowd. “And I say it is the fault of those people! The Jews and Muslims, coming here, treating our country as if it were their own! The lords who are puppets of Luxemburg and its Emperor!”

To tell the truth before this Luxemburg had not been on the mind of most of the people in the crowd. But they heard these words and rejoiced at them. Being in a cheering crowd was such a wonderful feeling, you all felt together, believed you were part of something bigger.

“Heil Mordred! Heil Mordred!” cheered the hundreds, egged on by his men in the crowd.

Mordred left the stand and stalked into the hall where he was meeting the Saxon ambassador, a lord named Bunignus. Mordred was followed by his father-in-law Gwallanus. “My fool of a father has left the Kingdom with me” he said seating himself in a throne.

“But you cannot be King for now” said the Saxon ambasador. “You still need your father to not be King.”

“Yes…” said Mordred, his body twisting like a serpent in his stately seat. The thought of his father coming back from France… His fingers clenched.

Gwallanus stepped forward. “But… is that wise? Your father is old. A move to seize power might be a reason for disinheritance…”

Mordred stood up in fury. “I will not lose the throne! I will not be weak! It is time to show the Pendragon my strength!” He remembered what his mother had told him, of the wrong Arthur’s father did to his grandfather. Now was the time for revenge, on the whole Pendragon line, a revenge that would be known for a thousand years.

“This is for my family…” muttered Mordred. “Bring in my sons!”

In came Melehan and Melou, his sons by Cwyllog… who Mordred had not seen for years. Fortunate, she had not been producing more sons. And with her gone perhaps another could share Mordred’s bed…

“Melehan, my heir. Now is the time for us to take power! To revenge ourselves!” said Mordred. “But aren’t we Pendragons?” asked Melehan.

Mordred moved forward furiously. “I am Gorlois’ grandson! You his great-grandson! We must avenge his murder by Arthur’s father!”

“But he’s our grandfather!” protested Melou. Mordred struck him across the face. “Do not deny this is our time!”

“Yes… of course father” said Melehan.

“But we must be wary now. Lies will be told against us. Plots, schemes. But it is all false! Our acts our justified!” Mordred remembered what Jarl Vidkun of Norway had told him. Adopt the tactics of Lucius. Talk of driving out the other. A show of strength. And that salute… he would try that as well.

“Go out! Tell the people of the Parliament! Show my strength!” he snarled.

“What strength?” asked Melehan.

“Gather a Parliament!” said Mordred. “Now! This is my moment!”

He produced a piece of paper and the royal seal. Then he took the piece of writing in which his father had named him steward of the Kingdom, with full rights.

Sir Enoch entered. “Sir Mordred!” he said, saluting. “I have the man.”

A prisoner entered. “A man from the cells of London, a forger of legal documents.”

“Write what I say” said Mordred. “In this writing.” He threw it down.

“What if I don’t?” asked the prisoner.

“If you succeed you will be given enough gold to live on the rest of your life. Fail and you die” snarled Mordred, though his eyes were gleaming with a frightening joy. It was unsettling and even Enoch edged towards the door.

The forger, a man named Alf, sighed, sat down and began to write very slowly. Mordred stood there watching him constantly. These were not pleasant eyes. At times Mordred had been charismatic, despite his unconventional appearance. But this was not the public Mordred but the private Mordred. Alf scratched out the signature slowly… for the second time, the first one had been difficult to do with those eyes boring into him.

A few days later a ship arrived and a messenger rode off, surrounded by guards, hastening to Westminster where Mordred sat. Mordred, not that eagerly, held out his hand for the letter. Reading it, an expression of exaggerated grief appeared on his face and he wept, holding his face.

“What is it, Sir Mordred?” asked a Baron.

“Here! Read this… but be careful!”

Mordred thrust the letter at him. The Baron read it and horror formed.

“Sir Enoch! Read it!” Mordred snatched the letter and held it out to the Knight, who took it and a moment later seemed to have finished it.

“The Parliament must know!” he said. “I’ll summon them!”

“Wolverhampton is with you” Enoch told Mordred. “I made one of my speeches. About the pollution of the Round Table, the blood that would be spilt if they continued with letting in other races.”

“That is excellent news” said Mordred, sipping his wine. He stood. “I have a title ready for you… if events go as I hope.”

It was days later. Mordred strode into the Parliament building, where people from all over Arthur’s Kingdom had gathered.

“My father, King Arthur Pendragon, son of Uther Pendragon… is dead.” Mordred waited for the gasps to die away. “As his only son I claim the throne.”

There was murmuring. What Mordred said was true… but the circumstances of his birth…

“My father named me heir in the letter.” Mordred produced it for all to see.

“May I see this letter?” asked one of the Knights. He looked over it. “That is the royal seal but Arthur’s…”

“It is real!” replied Mordred, snatching it with such force he nearly tore it.

“Could we compare it to more of Arthur’s writing?” asked another Knight.

Mordred turned his blazing eyes upon them. “Do you dare to question my words?”

“I merely wish to see if it…”

“A plot to subvert the will of our late King!” snarled Mordred. “Am I not his son? Does not the blood of Britain flow in my veins from both of my parents?”

“Heil Mordred!” cried Gwallanus from his place in the Parliament.

“Heil Mordred!” cried others who had met Mordred before, though at first their voices were few among the many. Yet the voices began to grow.

For the past few months Mordred had feasted the nobles. He had opened the vaults of his father, where they had stored wealth for their plans. A new hospital in London, improved roads, repairs to a bridge in Lincoln… but these were not important to Mordred.

And finally mutters began to be heard among the nobles, as Mordred had hoped there would be. “Why do we have to be ruled by Arthur?”

“Why do we have to pay more taxes when we don’t benefit?”

“Why can’t Arthur have more feasts for his nobles after all the work they do?”

“Why does Arthur give our money to the workers? He’s more peasant then King!”

“Mordred doesn’t hand out money to workers haphazardly.”

“Mordred doesn’t steal our wealth.”

And so, when Mordred said that Arthur was dead, even though news had not come elsewhere, and even merchants said they had not heard Arthur was dead… it was what much of the nobles wanted to hear. And not just nobles but people over Britain.

Gwallanus, eager to see his line hold the throne at last, was Mordred’s readiest supporter.

So it was that after a day of discussion the Parliament agreed that Mordred was the rightful King. Members of the Workers Party of Tor looked at each other in terror, knowing what this would mean. But alas, though they were against Mordred too many people favoured him.

Yet Mordred remained in his rooms writing out letters for outside Logres. After stamping an order for a forger to have his tongue cut out then be publicly executed he was writing for hours. To Jarl Vidkun in Norway, to Duke Chelric in Saxony, even to Lucius, to Eugenius III in Scotland, to Gunvasius in Orkney.

Jarl Vidkun had given Mordred many ideas from their meetings, of who to blame, of who to ally with. He had even shown Mordred that salute the Romans had performed, which Vidkun had learned from Lucius’ men.

Eugenius might not wish to show any submission to the rulers down south, but there was much Mordred could offer him. Perhaps an offer of greater autonomy. And Eugenius may well be a kindred spirit, considering the rumours about the death of his uncle. Of course Mordred found him personally pathetic, with his lack of desire towards any, he was hardly a proper man. But he could still be useful for the time being. Once Arthur was gone and Mordred secure… then relations between Logres and Scotland would certainly face renegotiation.

Gunvasius could be tricky, he had been opposed to Mordred’s stepfather King Lot ruling Orkney instead of him. But perhaps an offer to recognise him as King of Orkney...

“In Rome the younger Lucius rises” he said pleasantly. “I hope if Lancelot does not slay my father he will.”

“But what if he should claim Britain?” asked Enoch.

“And what of it? I will be King!” cried Mordred.

He turned and another thought struck him, of another detail written in the letter. “Guinevere will marry me” said Mordred, his eyes alight with lust. “As was ordered in the letter.”

“But… her age…” said Enoch.

“She was always sterile” said Mordred, with a smile. “But I have sons already.”

Not all accepted him. Lady Lisanor refused him. As did the Lords of Powys and Gwynned. But Mordred did not care. He had what he wanted. Those lands would fall to him in time. Even the land of Gorre and that whore Carys, daughter of that old fool Bagdemagus.

“Duke Chelric has long hated Arthur for his deeds. He opposed the Saxons for a long time, and his great-nephew slew the Duke’s nephew. He will jump at the chance of revenge” replied Mordred.

“But… he’s a Saxon! We are building Britain for the British!” said Sir Enoch.

Mordred smiled. “What does that matter? He will assist us. He will assist against our enemies.”

“And isn’t Cliges your nephew?”

Mordred spat. “That Greek? My whore sister should never have married that effeminate fool!” He smiled. “But he is far away from the reach of Saxony… and too far to help Arthur. I may be Arthur’s son… but I am not Arthur.”

He turned. “Now… to Guinevere. She must know of the wedding.”

Mordred left the chambers of the Queen. It had taken some time but she had given him a new place to go to, somewhere which should help his rule’s image.

It was not long after this that Mordred picked up the sword of his father’s father, named Clarent. It had been given to Guinevere for safekeeping and in order to prove her loyalty to him she had given its location to him. Not as fine as Excalibur but a magnificent sword, even if it was more for ceremony.

“I will prove whose grandson I am!” He wielded the sword. “I am Gorlois’ grandson! I will avenge the wrong on my grandmother!”

“So Guinevere has agreed?” asked Enoch.

“Not yet” said Mordred. “But I reminded her who holds power now. I reminded her of the letter. That if she did not go ahead with the law… events might not go well for her. Or her maids.” A horrible grimace of a smile played across his face. “Such beautiful vengeance… what better way to revenge the wrong upon the British King then to take his wife, just as the British King took the wife of Cornwall for his own.” He laughed, a horrible laugh, a laugh that seemed to go on, which made Enoch step back, especially with Mordred brandishing Clarent as if he were in battle.

Ares, nephew to Sir Tor, was meeting Mordred just before his coronation. If he could swing those beloved of the people to his side, Mordred was sure he would crush any further resistance. Ares had the name of his grandfather, a cowherd living around Derby. His older relatives had too much bad blood with Mordred but if he could win the next generation over… Yet from the start Ares did not show much interest.

“I have heard the King is alive” he said when Mordred entered.

“The King is alive as I am King.”

“No. I mean your father, Arthur. If he is then you are not King.”

“You dare to go against the will of the people! That I am King!”

“But you only took that power through blatant lies. How is it what the people want if you gained it through lies?”

“Well… it wasn’t a lie!” said Mordred. “It was true. It’s in the letter!”

“Well if it isn’t true then people will know eventually. You can’t hide the truth forever” said Ares.

“What do you know you cow… shit-cleaner!” Mordred spat at him.

Ares wiped his face. “I know if someone offered me 10 good cows and gave me 5 sickly cows it was not a fair deal. You are no better than a trickster!”

“It’s what the people want!”

“Then you tricked a lot of people. You and your gang of frauds, screaming and sowing hate.”

“You are just a pathetic little man from a family that cleaned up cowpats” said Mordred.

“So much for the man of the people! Though you traitors may sneer it doesn’t diminish my cause” said Ares.

Mordred glared at him. He moved forward slowly, his feet padding across the floor as he stalked forward like a beast of the wood. He held Ares’ gaze, breathed in and looked as if he was about to say something. And suddenly his hand shot to his dagger, pulling it out of the sheath and pouncing forward.

Ares dodged nimbly and grabbed a plate, hurling it against the false Knight. Mordred threw up his arms and shouted in pain as it crashed into his face, drawing blood. Ares got to the door and attempted to get out but Mordred was close behind. Ares kicked between his legs and elbowed him in the chest, though gave a shout at feeling armour beneath there. They wrestled, but Ares was younger and forced Mordred down.

“Help! Help! Treason!” screamed Mordred.

His guards rushed in and cut Ares down. Mordred furiously plunged his dagger in, again and again, even when Ares had stopped moving, and he lay there, like a butchered beasts of the field ravaged by a beast while the herd was away.

The guards stood there, not sure what to do as their ruler’s rage flowed out. Finally he stood, drenched in Ares’ blood, breathing hard. He threw his dagger down and glared down at the body of the cowherd. “He was a traitor! He attacked me! It was not me!” He spat blood down at Ares. “HE WAS A TRAITOR!”

Of course the next day proclamations were put up condemning the danger of these working-class parties, with a treasonous plot against the rightful King. Mordred made a speech before the Parliament. Once this was over he could finally go and marry Guinevere. She had asked to buy clothes and other items for her entourage for the wedding, so her retainers had been around London buying foods all day and yesterday. Once Mordred was crowned they could be wed, she who had once shared his father’s bed would share his… Mordred thought of this and excitement grew in him like a fire.

“It is clear that this… Cowherd movement is dangerous” said Mordred. “We will need stronger methods to counteract them. Bring a motion forward! It will be treason to question my rule. I am the Peoples ruler, any movement against me is against the people!”

And the rest of Ares grandsons watched in horror as a crowd gathered, chanting “Heil Mordred! Heil Mordred! Heil Mordred! HEIL MORDRED!”

Genèse de Parcours métropolitainS Créé il y a 3 ans, le projet de Parcours métropolitainS à Lyon imagine un tracé a priori qui ne sera que prétexte à s'en écarter pour l'éprouver lors de nos explorations sur le terrain, collectives et itératives, une cinquantaine ont déjà été faites… L'approche est morphologique, sensible, avec une posture socio-anthropologique, qui nous montre que la ville, surtout dans son péri-urbain, est un assemblage des cultures de chacun, qui structure le territoire.

Les frontières de la métropole sont tantôt nettement marquées, ou avec des contours flous. On peut suivre, dépasser, outre-passer, jouer avec ces lisières, trouver leurs interstices, traverser les dedans/et les dehors… La lisière est ainsi le point d’articulation d’un parcours métropolitain, à la fois cousant, raccordant, démarquant, rendant cohérent, ou fractionnant des portions de territoires, on peut donc la considérer comme une sorte de fil conducteur. Fil conducteur d’ailleurs bien nommé dans le cadre d’un tracé pédestre. Ceci nous a orienté vers l'ajout de la notion de lisière dans notre appellation, qui devient fin 2017 "Parcours métropolitainS, Grand Lyon et lisières". Le "S" final de métropolitainS souligne la diversité des cultures et des pratiques qui peuvent appréhender ces Parcours.

2. Organisation et animation de nos Parcours Nous imaginons une animation de ces Parcours avec 3 volets :

- une structure fédératrice, lançant des appels d'offre à balades, organisant un festival ou événement récurent de randonnée urbaine, et animatrice d'un réseau d'artistes marcheurs notamment avec des échanges de pratiques. Nous sommes déjà partie prenante dans le réseau international "Made of Walking", et nous menons une veille avec le réseau "Marcheurs d'ici et d'a(r)illeurs et avec les références de 650 documents en ligne sur SCRIBD [site de partage].

Ce lieu serait centre d'exposition, de narration, et de performances post camina... Plutôt qu'une forme de laboratoire qui rassemble des chercheurs et artistes, nous le voyons comme un refuge, ou mieux comme un bivouac pour les explorateurs. Un lieu très ouvert, pour les professionnels comme pour les amateurs. L'idée du bivouac évoque plus l'éphémère des Parcours, qui ne seraient jamais tout à fait les mêmes... Par ailleurs ce terme évoque la possibilité des nuitées et l'idée des marches nocturnes que nous explorons actuellement.

- le 2e volet est un fléchage du parcours, sur le terrain ou à travers un audio-guide ou une application mobile, cette dernière hypothèse, plus écologique, et plus légère, n'étant pas forcément exclusive.

- 3e volet : une approche sociale et pédagogique, par exemple en politique de la ville, ou l'habitant et l'usager local deviennent les experts du parcours.

3. Forme des Parcours métropolitains La pratique amène la forme : à Lyon le "Y" parait évident, c'est celui de la confluence, celui du parlé lyonnais, celui qui symbolise la trinité chrétienne dans la primatiale gauloise, celui des mages et alchimistes qui fantasment la fusion des 3 éléments dans une ville franc-maçonnique…

Sur cette forme en Y, se tresse une succession / un enchainement de cercles. C'est la symbolique des cercles borroméens, entrelacés, représentant trois boucles qui se tiennent ensemble, et dessinant à la fois un zone centrale, riche qui se veut l'évocation du Y lyonnais, et des courbes qui englobent la, ou plutôt les périphéries-lisières... Ces boucles ne sont pas fermées, laissant la porte ouverte à des possible, à une infinitude…

La forme qu'on vous montre aujourd'hui n'est pas figurative du parcours, elle est symbolique de l'esprit des Parcours métropolitainS…

4. Pratiques muséales Nous sommes ici au MUCEM [pour ces Assises nationales des Sentiers Métropolitains], ou la vitrine consacrée aux Sentiers Métropolitains, et la marque du GR2013 qui est présente au cœur du Musée, nous affirment que le Parcours croise le Musée. Ceci pose la question : d'un parcours objet, nos parcours sont ils des collections, doivent ils s'exposer au Musée ?

Nous pensons qu'il faut sortir du Musée pour aller sur le terrain, que nos Parcours & lisières sont à vivre, que la pratique est le Parcours... et nous rejoignons ici le concept de promenadology (Spaziergang wissen schaft ou strollology) à l'origine de Lucius Burckhardt : se promener pour apprécier le lieu, l'environnement, le plaisir de la marche.

La fraternité se révèle dans la marche, des liens se créent au cours du Parcours, sans besoin de savoir qui marche avec qui, ce qui compte c'est de marcher, de vivre le temps et l'espace. Ces frissons et émotions partagées seront l'occasion de créer des traces d'expériences, récits, textes, photos, griffonnages, poétique, et autres post camina. Toutes ces formes de récits, ou d'enregistrements réalisés in situ, vont peu à peu donner de l'épaisseur au Parcours, lui ajouter une composante temporelle, lui forger une histoire, lui donner identité.

Ainsi, au delà de la pratique, le Parcours prend une forme narrative qui lui permet d’interpeller le conservateur hors les murs et d'accéder à de nouvelles formes de Musée, à ciel ouvert et à 360°.

Vous avez vu des exemples de ces traces post camina dans le diaporama, notamment : - le Tracé topo-graphique du créateur David Bartholoméo - la carte mentale d'Alice Neveu, artiste marcheuse-performeuse - les photos de nuit de l'ergothérapeute Charlène Gruet - un écrit de la poétesse Catherine Serre - un croquis de la plasticienne Claire Daudin

Voilà c'était quelques pas qui résonnent dans un superbe bâtiment…

5. Conclusion Les points de vue mis en place par une communauté de différents praticiens et/ou résidents, souvent en lisière les uns des autres, donnent à la fois une cohérence et une souplesse, où les approches sensibles les plus surprenantes inviteront sans cesse à de nouvelles expériences, tant individuelles que collectives.

Le récit paysager, humain, patrimonial, généré par le Parcours, et surtout par ses promeneurs, sera toujours en lisière de quelque chose, quelque chose d’autre, d’un autre territoire, d’une altérité qu’il nous importera de visiter, d'expérimenter, en marchant, encore et encore... et de partager/ restituer avec une création post camina.
