A blast from fandoms past today. These were the days…

Mpreg is my kryptonite. Seriously. If there’s ever a ship you want me to check out, and you want an absolute guarantee that I’ll read it? Drop me an mpreg fic. I may or may not enjoy it, but I will NEVER be able to resist the siren call of mpreg. You’d think I’d be more drawn to ABO as a result, but eh. Anyway.

The dynamic here is so good. I love McFassy fics where James is something of a lil shit. Because let’s face it - he absolutely is, lol. His restlessness is so well conveyed; I’ve never been (and never will be) pregnant, but somehow I still know how he feels. And Michael being the softer, perhaps more caring one of the two is lovely. He’s certainly a tad bit overprotective, but luckily for him, it’s endearing. Their relationship is so affectionate and playful. It’s a genuine pleasure to read these two guys just existing in the world and loving each other, eagerly awaiting the birth of their child.

I love the changing names for their kiddo too, shifting as they try different ones out. That kid, when they’re born, will be so fucking cherished and adored. Also, if you read other fics of this ship by one of these writers, you start to recognize familiar tropes. Those tropes are like a warm blanket for me whenever I reread this. Reminds me of a time, years ago, when we were all just enjoying reading, writing, and experiencing the relationship - friendly, sexual, and all points in between - of these two actors. Fun times, my dudes.

Can we talk about how everyone, Raven especially, sees Charles as this naïve, arrogant and credulous man who hopes for the betterment of the world while being “ignorant” to its faults when in reality if anything he is the LEAST naïve one of them all.

He’s had to grow up and deal with the weight of hearing everyone’s most violent, disturbing, disgusting and innapropriate thoughts and yet he STILL has hope. That’s the complete opposite of ignorant if I’ve ever seen it. He may have unrealistic expectations when it comes to bigotry and equality and all that but how can one still have hope for a world when he sees just how hopeless its society is on a basis?

There was a holiday fic collection I read where on Father’s Day (ode to his comic backstory) he found himself in his fathers study telling Erik about how his father had passed. In this adaptation it was suicide, talking about how he could feel nothing inside the body, the mind, but complete emptiness. It went into how both of them know just as well as the other how deep and harmful the darkness that can encompass one can grow to be. How Charles’ darkness and grief and negative intrusive thoughts could be worse than Erik’s, if anything rival it. Everyone in the original movie series sees Charles as this hopeful, ignorant man wanting to change the word and its ideologies himself, and it pains me that so many people see and write Charles as this truly (in Erik’s own words) naïve man, when in reality he’s the most aware one can be of the humans and society as a whole’s, faults.

This also goes into Charles is powerful as FUCK and could kill anyone in a split second at the stop of a heartbeat but rarely if ever uses that ability. Raven accusing Charles of so much in Dark Phoenix, along with Hank, later, truly breaks me because he’s always been looking out for everyone and never does anything for his own gain.

I think a few different things, like, okay, obviously the most fun 😏 explanation is that they're boyfriends who share closets and sometimes who have quickies in hotel rooms, too, with all their clothes ending up in a pile, and thus forgetting who's shirt is who's and swapping. But, the first point you made is probably most likely because... men's fashion is like that. Often plain and repeatable. But I also would believe the second, too, lol. I don't know about Ilaria Urbinati (Chris' stylist), but Michael Fisher has done some pretty ship-ish shit over the years, lmao. And I love that he has. It's so entertaining every time. TK squeezes his hands, and the dam Carlos had hastily constructed as he was shutting the door behind his parents starts to crack a little. “I never … thought I’d have that,” he admits.

Stepping a little closer into him, TK nods and waits for him to continue.

“I love them so much,” Carlos sighs. “I tried to convince myself it was enough that they accepted me and didn’t throw me out of the house like lots of parents do.”

Help finding a book?

I got reminded of a book I really liked, but I can't remember the identifying information: author or title...

This week there was a Tumblr post running around about a kingdom at war, and the prince comes out to the front lines for a war council. He's wise and excellent at strategy. Sometimes prince needs a cane, crutches or a wheelchair.

A general sees Prince in a wheelchair, starts declaring loudly that living with a disability is a fate worse than death, unmanly, yadda yadda. So his aide asks, sir if you're ever wounded what would be your wishes?

General says, it is your duty to give me the mercy tap. (Which, boggle)

It's by way of this that the general gets the nickname, the warhorse of (hometown), not because warhorses are noble and brave, but because they're so fragile that you have to put them down because they've broken a leg.

This reminded me of the book I can almost remember, which is a M/M romance, where the young prince is a bit foppish, "unmasculine" for his love of beautiful clothes, and who is unabashedly queer and has also declared multiple times his admiration for the general/warlord. (He's also iirc an unreliable narrator because I think we see the General Looking Respectfully 👀👀👀)

Foppish Prince manages to save his people in the ...Summer Palace, I think, when the bandits come, gets them all out safe and joins up with the forces of the General/Warlord.

It's not fanfiction, I'm pretty sure. And I've been reading tons of @luninosity and @sweetfirebird (whose books I have I need to go check through)...

A bit of a blast from the past for today’s rec. In that it was first posted, damn, nine years ago. Nine years ago exactly in two weeks! Maybe I should have waited and posted this rec on its anniversary?

Nah. Still, decent enough timing I must say. Absolutely not planned at all.

It may be an older story, but I can assure you, it is well worth checking out. And I’m not just saying that because both of the authors are dear friends of mine. No, this fic is truly amazing. It’s my personal barometer of quality for ‘crack treated seriously’ fics, because that’s exactly what it is. It’s the most cracky premise you could ever think of - aliens made them do it - and yet… yet…

It’s so soft. And tender. The emotions are strong and real. Every now and then, the crack pokes through, but it never feels like mood whiplash. You might not think you could get that much emotional mileage out of a premise like this, but somehow, it manages - and then some. The love scene is almost unbearably beautiful, especially for a fic about being abducted by aliens who just wanna watch the characters fuck, lol.

The ending is perfect. A sublime, hilarious, “well, that happened” cap on a fic full of tender emotions and cracky comedy that makes me laugh (and sigh dreamily) every time I reread it.

Truly magical.

Somewhere in the middle of the road trip to recruit more mutants, Charles and Erik get caught up in a storm. That's how it begins, but it's not how it ends. It takes them about thirty years to discover that Genoshan sunrises are beautiful.

One night during the mutant road trip, Erik knocks on Charles's door and brusquely demands to be taken to bed. Charles, who has been very careful about staying out of Erik’s head, is disoriented by the haunted look in Erik’s eyes but is ultimately swayed by the fact that they’ve had this burgeoning tension between them since forever.

They then proceed to have The Saddest And Worst Sex Ever. Erik stalks off all humiliated and unhappy and Charles is confused until he works out that Erik was a virgin--at which point Charles feels equal parts guilty and furious that Erik's basically used him as an instrument of self-harm.

The next time it happens, Charles teaches Erik what it means to really make love.

Charles sighs; he's been oblique partly out of consideration to Erik's sensibilities, but apparently Erik is going to make him spell it out. "I know you don't like women," he says gently.

Erik's expression doesn't change. "But you're not a woman."
